Sridaran, Lakshmi. "Coastal restoration and management as a strategy for wealth creation in Louisiana". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/50121.
Texto completoIncludes bibliographical references (p. 131-133).
With more people in the world living along coasts than any other environment, planning for the coastal zone requires negotiating the socially constructed human relationships that have traditionally produced severe inequality between coastal residents and users. In Louisiana, this inequality is apparent in the great deal of wealth external users have extracted from the coast at the direct environmental and economic expense of local residents. An examination of the economic history of Louisiana's coast reveals how this disparity between coastal residents and users has produced deleterious environmental consequences, which have grown exponentially precisely because this inequality between human residents and users persists today. The current coastal restoration and management strategy in Louisiana does not focus on the socially constructed origins of this continuing environmental destruction, but it must do so in order to restore any hope of saving, restoring, and improving the coast. This thesis offers a socially reconstructed strategy for coastal restoration and management in Louisiana that narrows the environmental and economic disparity between coastal users and residents to address the environmental harm. This new wealth creation strategy enables local firms and residents to offer their existing knowledge of the coast and participate in the implementation of restoring and improving the natural assets of their coast through a variety of economic incentives.
(cont.) In this way coastal residents are empowered to gain both the economic and environmental benefits of managing their coast, which I define as wealth. A case study of the Pulicat coastal community in Tamil Nadu, India provides valuable insights on how such a strategy can be implemented utilizing the existing civic and institutional infrastructure in Louisiana. The three significant recommendations this thesis offers can be implemented immediately to begin socially reconstructing Louisiana's coastal restoration and management strategy. The urgency and magnitude of environmental destruction to Louisiana's coast mandates such a bold shift.

Texto completoA lacuna is a disruption in a figurative image and impedes comprehension of the unity of the whole. It is something missing, a void, in material form and, in some cases memory. The urge to eradicate or minimize a disruption to an aesthetic whole has long been a dilemma in conservation, particularly in painting and sculpture, but also in the repair of historical buildings. Any solution must address the issue of authenticity, as repair will be an insertion into an ancient, perhaps layered artefact. The solution requires a theoretically based methodology if the aim of the conservation intervention is to conserve the value and meaning of the building or artefact. The repair of lacunae at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town has had a distinct aesthetic impact on the complex and has changed the perception of the complex. The extensive three-decade-long intervention undertaken by Gabriël Fagan Architects is a re-establishment of the Castle complex as a VOC/Dutch fortified citadel as envisioned by the Architects and reveals the issues that must be confronted in order to conserve authenticity.

Texto completoWithin the city's transformative process, constantly tinged by new ideals, different interests must be united and considered in the planning and design of school grounds. Based on the importance of nature for children's health and development, this study examines two school grounds in Malmö from three perspectives: the school grounds design and shape, the use and preferences of the students on the school grounds, and the planner´s priorities and proceedings in planning school ground environments. The purpose is, through an understanding of how these three perspectives can unite, to increase knowledge on how school grounds can be planned more socially and ecologically sustainable in the transformative city. This is investigated with a mixed method through site observations, surveys and interviews. The empirical evidence shows a relatively passive relation to the school ground among the students, regardless of the school grounds size and amount of greenery, and generally they prioritize social interaction and mobile phone use during breaks. The interpretation of the empirical material, based on the theory, indicates that it is the quality of the greenery that affects the student’s interest in using the environment. Through the interviews, it emerged that the design of a green framework that offers different spatialities can contribute to a more equal, inclusive and sustainable school ground. The ideal environment of the school ground, which can be considered one that is characterized by natural environments, does not necessarily reflect the student's ideal of it. The students' preferences can however be accommodated within the sustainable framework through continuous design.

Texto completoDuring the last decades, the number of ponds decreased by more than 50 % in European countries, occasionally reaching up to 90 % in some regions. Their decline in number has led to a strong loss of connectivity between waterbodies. Yet, these small and scattered ecosystems are essential for the life cycle of a high diversity of freshwater species. Land use policies like the creation of Greenways and Blueways in France aim to improve ecological continuities to allow maintenance of existent biological populations and exchanges between them. However, the connectivity between ponds must be considered according to the dispersal abilities of freshwater species and this information often lacks to guide restoration measures. In the present work, we studied the dispersal abilities of dragonflies on several spatial scales and investigated the biological traits and environmental factors that shaped their movements. In the first part, we evaluated the colonization of 20 ponds in Normandy by dragonflies during three years after pond restoration or pond creation. The results highlight high colonization rates during the first year and no difference in species richness was found between newly created or restored ponds. This suggests that restoration of ponds after complete drought should not always be prioritized over pond creation in management strategies. We found that generalist species were more present in the first year after pond creation or restoration, whereas the occurrence of forest specialists increased with the age of the pond. The results also highlighted that the landscape context around ponds (i.e. forest vs. open lands) had an effect on the composition of dragonfly communities. Finally, the total abundance of odonate species was related to the density of other ponds in the surroundings. This result emphasizes that highly connected ponds can support larger populations than isolated ones and thus, be more resilient to perturbations. The second part provides insights into the larval development of Anax imperator and the relationship between morphological traits of larvae and adults. The results suggest that the survival of this species might depend on its body length during the maturation period. We also tried to study the natal dispersal by marking 87 individuals at emergence, but only two males were resighted after the maturation period. Finally, the effect of two water pollutants (i.e. Round-up and DEET) at different concentrations was also investigated on the larval development and adults of Aeshna cyanea. Larvae were reared under laboratory conditions and exposed to concentrations up to 30 mg.L-1 of the two pollutants. No effect of the pollutants was detected on the morphological conditions of larvae or tenerals, suggesting that A. cyanea is tolerant to potential water pollution of ponds. The level of HSP70 stress protein was also similar according to the different treatments, but teneral adults presented higher levels of stress than larvae, suggesting that emergence induced a high stress in the individuals. The third part focuses on the dispersal of A. imperator. We first assessed the local movements within a pond network in the Normandy region
Musser, Sarah. "Sacrifice, Sabbath, and the Restoration of Creation". Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10161/11302.
Texto completoSacrifice often connotes death or some form of lack within popular discourse. The association of sacrifice with death is assumed in some strains of the Christian tradition that employ sacrifice within a penal substitutionary account of the atonement. In this framework, sacrifice is understood as death for the purposes of punishment. This dissertation challenges the identification of sacrifice with death. It presents a reinterpretation of sacrifice through a canonical and literary reading of Old and New Testament texts. Sacrificial practice displayed in Leviticus and Hebrews suggests that sacrifice is oriented at life rather than at death. Specifically, sacrifice in Leviticus aims toward a reinstatement of the good order of creation displayed in Genesis 1. The telos of the Levitical cult is humanity’s redemption and creation’s restoration. Both are achieved on the Day of Atonement described in Leviticus 16 as a Sabbath. Hebrews expands upon the sacrificial logic of Leviticus in presenting Christ’s resurrection as the perfection of the cult. Christ’s sacrifice is his resurrected body, not his death. Christians are called to participate in Christ’s sacrifice, and discipleship assumes a form that challenges society’s deathly sacrifices.

Adopting the literature review approach and the experimental analysis, this thesis aims at the two purposes : (1) discuss the origin and the essence of the division skill of the graphic painting. since Taiwan Restoration in 1945. (2) to apply its techniques to personal art creations. The painting form presented in the division skill of the graphic painting. since 1945 is a typical form and it’s origin could be easily traced. Taiwanese painters of this school, who are generally influenced by Chinese traditional concepts such as the life philosophy and perfect harmony between humans and gods, focus their paintings on poetic and rhythmic images, so they can express more than the paintings appear. Carefully observing the creations, we can see not only how subject and object are perfectly united, and how the combination of sense and sensibility is successfully achieved, but also the harmony between what it looks like and what it really is .The painting style has prevailed since Taiwan restoration in 1945. Currently,it is still active and plays an important role in Taiwan painting society. By literature analysis ,we find that there are four conclusions concerning the division skill of the graphic painting.First, the skills in issue originate from Paul Cezanne,Pablo Ruiz Picasso,Georges Breque,Fernand Leger,Robert Delaunay and Marc Chagall.Second, there are six ways used in creating division paintings. (1)the straight form division (2)the cure form division (3)the edge form division (4)the color region form division (5)the overlap(montage)form division (6)the blend form division .Third, there are various materials inspiring their creations, such as natural scenery, dail activities and the surrealism.Fourth, the skills are so unique that they give such division paintings vivid poetic images. In addition, based on the implications we have learned from the division skill of the graphic painting, the graduate student develops the following painting concepts:(1)unique images:the scene in the paintings may not be realistic, yet is able to reflect the reality interpreted by the painter. (2)existence and nonexistence:dividing the images into existence nonexistence and something in between. (3)poetic ryhme created by lights and shadows. (4)musical harmony among lines and colors. The painting collated in the thesis made not only to apply the skills, but also to express my appreciations and concerns about our society. The two series are “useless concerns”,which focuses on the dark sights of our society, and “beautiful sights”,which appreciates the bright and warm scenery. In sum,the two series clearly described the reality of life by contrasting sadness with happiness.

Heritage buildings, a tangible asset not only has an architectural and structural significance, it brings also one of the most valuable historical places. Restoration projects and renovation projects associated with this type of job are diverse in both size and form. Constantly changing and always applying many new technologies that managers, builders, and restorations want to use to preserve the best values that legacy brings. The combination of BIM and the restoration project has created a new breakthrough. Instead of relying on elements of pure manual workers, it accompanies the technological age to develop this kind of project to a new level. Base on it, the data is systematically perfect, visibility capabilities, the applied parametric model can statistically statistics and more. Although, HBIM has become a trend in restore project throughout the world such as in Egypt, England. But in some developing country, applying BIM as a new way for a new project seem has some not yet issues. Thus, choosing a way can apply both BIM for new project and restoration project, it enables those, government, an individual party to reach two destinations in one pilot study. The historical perspective is assessed through heritage buildings; the project to restore that heritage is one of the specific projects. This paper will focus on analyzing the specificity of the heritage restoration project when applying new technology HBIM to create a common data environment. Based on previous studies on the level of development of the model (LOD), the steps of developing BIM applied in a case study to better realize the pros and cons when applying for a job submit through proven facts. This research paper will also try to find an inadequate point to have an objective view when applied to the traditional wooden house restoration project in Vietnam.

In recent years, the impact of globalization has influenced the economy, industries, and regional development of countries or regions. To find a suitable development orientation and adjustment within the global and regional competition, efforts were made to find new ways in every regional development. During this trend, Place Marketing has become the new dominance. Looking back on the urban development of Europe, the United States, and other advanced countries, when undergoing similar circumstances, it is a more feasible and necessary mean to let the local development lead the overall local economic development. Our government also responded to this trend. In 1998, Ministry of Economic Affairs proposed “Four-year New Taiwan brand commercial district plan from 2008 to 2011”. Its purpose is to integrate local resources, activate local cultures, cohere with local awareness, and extend to create a brand shopping district. Place Brand theory, based on Place Marketing theory, utilizes its strategic identifying factor such as functions of place, self-expressions, emotions…etc., to promote local characteristics, improve the future of Place and attract human resources, tourism and investment, increase Place competitiveness, then to better meet the local marketing policy, promote the brand to create a commercial district. Place Marketing has become a national, regional and the city's major issues in recent years. But Kwong Hing area, which the writer has studied, currently faces the difficulties of local decline and industrial depression due to its fail to develop local characteristics effectively. As a result, by integrating the region’s visual elements such as its humanity, history, industry, tourism, ecology, using Place branding to plan the overall visual design, and fusing into the local identity design and the marketing of visual image, would benefit the development of local characteristics, rebuild the local image, and revitalize a variety of local economic activities. It is the objective of this study.
