Resumen
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and determine different energy components existing within historic buildings that will contribute to the development of guidelines for applying modern technology systems within these strucutres and to show the financial, social and physical benefits, which may result without altering the architectural and cultural significance of the building.Union Station, Indianapolis, is an example of historical and architectural ingenuity. If proper and selected energy systems are applied, Union Station will be a strong active force for revitalizing the surrounding area, which has deteriorated and fallen into disuse in recent times. Similar examples of significant historic buildings are scattered all across the country, and with the new development taking place, these historic structures, which are the physical and visual links between us and our past, are being thregtened for the sake of the "glass-box". This study shows the many advantages in preserving these historic links whether economically, architecturally or socially, by bringing the best technology of both worlds and molding them into one system, in which both technologies work together and compliment each other rather than be an isolated system.

Resumen
Since 1997, Hong Kong as an international financial center has experienced several financial storms. Whenever it was in the storm, the Government found reliance on finance and real estate unreliable and sought the need to diversify its economic mode. However, as soon as the storm was over, the Government forgot the need and continues to focus on financial development. In 2009, in view of the international financial crisis, the Chief Executive (CE) identified 6 priority industries as the new growth drives to propel Hong Kong towards a knowledge-based economy. In parallel, the Policy Address 2009 endorsed the Government would take “appropriate policies to remove obstacles to their development” (para.21) and “examine whether the existing use of resources can support the new economic structure, and to prevent the factors of production from being tied up by outdated policies and economic structure.” (para.22) Subsequently, CE suggested that diversified development should be a strategic move to achieve sustainable economic growth. To utilize the land resources for the 6 industries? development, the Government launches 4 measures to release the potential of 1000 industrial buildings. Its intention is good. Yet, the result will be much better if there are cohesive policy and measures to synchronize the needs and the strengths of the industries. Among the 6 priority industries to utilize the industrial land, this dissertation targets primarily on cultural and creative industries (CCI) which may collaborate with other industries, such as education and tourism to develop cultural tourism and an education center with a view to forming a CCI park in a post-industrial area. This dissertation divides itself into three. The first part evaluates CCI, urban industrial heritage buildings and their combination; the second examines 4 local case studies, Cattle Depot, JCCAC, Fotan and LoftStage as well as 6 Shanghai ones. The third and final part devises a preliminary but innovative model of how to develop a post-industrial area into a sustainable CCI park with various potentials and resources concerted in Hong Kong.

Glen, Emma-Lee. "Evaluation of topsoil inversion for habitat creation or restoration". Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.496608.

Texto completo
Resumen
Agricultural land available for habitat creation and restoration is of higher soil nutrient status than semi-natural habitats. This causes problems by favouring the growth of competitive species which thrive at the expense of a more diverse plant community. The depleted seed bank of ex-arable land means that target species are unlikely to be present. Even when the site is adjacent to target habitat, natural colonisation will be slow, meaning target species will need to be introduced artificially. This thesis researches the use of topsoil inversion followed by sowing a simple seed mix, as a means of improving habitat creation in comparison to conventional techniques. This was achieved by establishing a main experimental site, and surveying fifteen existing topsoil inversion sites.

Resumen
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2009.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 131-133).
With more people in the world living along coasts than any other environment, planning for the coastal zone requires negotiating the socially constructed human relationships that have traditionally produced severe inequality between coastal residents and users. In Louisiana, this inequality is apparent in the great deal of wealth external users have extracted from the coast at the direct environmental and economic expense of local residents. An examination of the economic history of Louisiana's coast reveals how this disparity between coastal residents and users has produced deleterious environmental consequences, which have grown exponentially precisely because this inequality between human residents and users persists today. The current coastal restoration and management strategy in Louisiana does not focus on the socially constructed origins of this continuing environmental destruction, but it must do so in order to restore any hope of saving, restoring, and improving the coast. This thesis offers a socially reconstructed strategy for coastal restoration and management in Louisiana that narrows the environmental and economic disparity between coastal users and residents to address the environmental harm. This new wealth creation strategy enables local firms and residents to offer their existing knowledge of the coast and participate in the implementation of restoring and improving the natural assets of their coast through a variety of economic incentives.
(cont.) In this way coastal residents are empowered to gain both the economic and environmental benefits of managing their coast, which I define as wealth. A case study of the Pulicat coastal community in Tamil Nadu, India provides valuable insights on how such a strategy can be implemented utilizing the existing civic and institutional infrastructure in Louisiana. The three significant recommendations this thesis offers can be implemented immediately to begin socially reconstructing Louisiana's coastal restoration and management strategy. The urgency and magnitude of environmental destruction to Louisiana's coast mandates such a bold shift.

Mattson, Gregory A. II. "Characterization of Dredged Sediment Used in Coastal Restoration and Marsh Creation Projects". ScholarWorks@UNO, 2014. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1823.

Texto completo
Resumen
To minimize coastal land loss and create new land, dredged sediment has been in use in coastal Louisiana during the last several years. Engineering properties and material characteristics of dredged material are input parameters in several mathematical models used to predict the long-term hydrodynamic behavior of the coast. Therefore, proper characterization of the dredged material is of utmost importance in the correct design of coastal restoration and land creation projects. The sedimentation characteristics of the dredged material, among other factors, depends on the (a) grain size distribution of the dredged material, (b) salinity (fresh, brackish, or saltwater environment) of the composite slurry, and (c) concentration of the solid particles in the slurry. In this research, dredged sediments obtained from actual coastal restoration projects were characterized. Furthermore, the effects of grain size distribution, salinity and solid particle concentration on sedimentation characteristics have been evaluated.

Resumen
This thesis explores the relationship between Creation and the saints Cuthbert and Guthlac in their Anglo-Latin and Old English vitae. It argues that this relationship is best understood through received theological exegesis concerning Creation's present state in the postlapsarian world. The exegesis has its foundation in Augustine's interpretations of the Genesis narrative, though it enters the textual tradition of the vitae via an adapted portion of De Genesi contra Manichaeos in Bede's metrical Vita Sancti Cuthberti (VCM). Both Augustine and Bede argue, with slight differences, that fallen Creation can be restored into prelapsarian harmony with humanity by way of sanctity. Each individual vita engages with this understanding of the Fall in distinct, though ultimately interrelated, ways, and the chapters of this thesis will therefore explore each text individually. Chapter 1 argues that the anonymous Vita Sancti Cuthberti (VCA) unites Cuthbert's ability to restore Creation with the theme of monastic obedience, linking the ordering of a monastery to the restoration of prelapsarian harmony. The VCA also seeks to create sites for potential lay pilgrimage in the landscapes of Farne and Lindisfarne by highlighting the present efficacy of Cuthbert's miracles. Chapter 2 argues that Bede's VCM not only reveals his early attempt to fashion Cuthbert into the primary saint for Britain, via a focus on Cuthbert's obedience to the Divine Office, but also that the restoration of Creation functions as a ruminative tool. Chapter 3 argues that Bede transforms the nature of Cuthbert's sanctity in his prose Vita Sancti Cuthberti (VCP) from static to developmental, influenced by the Evagrian Vita Antonii, and that Creation is adapted to function as the impetus for, and evidence of, Cuthbert's progression. Chapter 4 argues that Felix's Vita Sancti Guthlaci (VSG) unites the development of Guthlac with a physically delineated Creation, and that the restoration of Creation is elevated to an even greater degree here than in Bede's hagiography. Chapter 5 argues that the author of the Old English Prose Guthlac (OEPG) grounds his vita by utilizing a landscape lexis shared with contemporary boundary clauses, so that here the relationship between the saint and Creation has greater force; it further argues that Guthlac A uniquely connects Guthlac with the doctrine of replacement, consolidating links between his arrival to the eremitic space and the restoration of prelapsarian Eden.

There is a demand to reestablish a healthy coastal ecosystem by rebuilding wetlands with river diversion or dredged sediments in coastal Louisiana. Land building projects using dredged sediments from adjacent canals and river beds, can be used to protect the coastal properties and infrastructure systems from flood and storm surges. To predict the sediment’s long term behavior, math models require input parameters based on sediment engineering properties and material characteristics. Proper characterization is critical for accurate design of coastal restoration projects. The dredge material sedimentation characteristics and their effects on the settlement rate of suspended solid particles and underlying foundation soil depend, among other factors, on the grain size distribution of the dredged material, salinity of the composite slurry, and slurry solid particles concentration. This research evaluated the effects of grain size distribution, salinity, and initial solids concentration on the sedimentation characteristics of fine grained dredged sediments in Coastal Louisiana.

A lacuna is a disruption in a figurative image and impedes comprehension of the unity of the whole. It is something missing, a void, in material form and, in some cases memory. The urge to eradicate or minimize a disruption to an aesthetic whole has long been a dilemma in conservation, particularly in painting and sculpture, but also in the repair of historical buildings. Any solution must address the issue of authenticity, as repair will be an insertion into an ancient, perhaps layered artefact. The solution requires a theoretically based methodology if the aim of the conservation intervention is to conserve the value and meaning of the building or artefact. The repair of lacunae at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town has had a distinct aesthetic impact on the complex and has changed the perception of the complex. The extensive three-decade-long intervention undertaken by Gabriël Fagan Architects is a re-establishment of the Castle complex as a VOC/Dutch fortified citadel as envisioned by the Architects and reveals the issues that must be confronted in order to conserve authenticity.

Resumen
Landscape development[1] can provide many benefits, including the reduction of stormwater runoff and the creation of habitats for wildlife. It can also provide health benefits. Researchers, such as Roger Ulrich and Rita Berto have demonstrated that views of trees and other vegetation are associated with lower blood pressure and reduced recovery times in hospitals and that environments with more natural elements may lessen mental fatigue (R. Ulrich 1984) and (Berto 2005). As rebuilding in New Orleans continues 11 years after Hurricane Katrina, landscape development has been limited or lacking, especially in the redevelopment of commercial properties. Two prominent reasons for this deficiency are a lack of funding and, until August of 2015, the absence of a comprehensive landscape ordinance. The purpose of the research presented here is to determine the degree to which community residents express a preference for healthier commercial environments. As part of my research, I measured community perceptions of four potential redevelopment concepts for a blighted strip shopping center utilizing attention restoration theory (ART), which postulates that certain environmental qualities contribute to reductions in mental fatigue. I found that commercial environments with the most quality landscaping[2] are those that neighborhood residents most prefer and are most conducive to better health. Keywords: mental fatigue, attention restoration theory, perceived restoration scale, commercial landscape quantity, public health, healthy urban environment [1] Refer to operational definitions (pages 4-6). Karlström, Anna. "Preserving Impermanence : The Creation of Heritage in Vientiane, Laos". Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Afrikansk och jämförande arkeologi, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-101166.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis is about the heritage in Vientiane. In an attempt to go beyond a more traditional descriptive approach, the study aims at bringing forward a discussion about the definition, or rather the multiplicity of definitions, of the concept of heritage as such. The unavoidabe tension emanating from a modern western frame of thought being applied to the geographical and cultural setting of the study provides an opportunity to develop a criticism of some of the assumptions underlying our current definitions of heritage. For this particular study, heritage is defined as to include stories, places and things. It is a heritage that is complex and ambiguous, because the stories are parallel, the definitions and perceptions of place are manifold and contested, and the things and their meaning appear altered, depending on what approach to materiality is used. The objective is not to propose how to identify and manage such a complex heritage. Rather, it is about what causes this complexity and ambiguity and what is in between the stories, places and things. In addition, the study aims to critically deconstruct the contemporary heritage discourse, which privileges material authenticity, form and fabric and the idea that heritage values are universal and should be preserved for the future and preferably forever. In Laos, Buddhism dominates as religious practice. In this context, the notion of material impermanence also governs the perception of reality. Approaches to materiality in Buddhism are related to the general ideas that things are important from a contemporary perspective and primarily as containers for spiritual values, that the spiritual values carry the connection to the past, and that heritage is primarily spiritual in nature and has little to do with physical structure and form. By exploring the concepts of restoration, destruction and consumption in such a perspective, we understand that preservation and restoration are active processes of materialisation. We also understand that destruction and consumption are necessary for the appreciation of certain heritage expressions, and that heritage is being constantly created. With this understanding, this book is an argument for challenging contemporary western heritage discourse and question its fundamental ideology of preservationism.

Texto completo
Within the city's transformative process, constantly tinged by new ideals, different interests must be united and considered in the planning and design of school grounds. Based on the importance of nature for children's health and development, this study examines two school grounds in Malmö from three perspectives: the school grounds design and shape, the use and preferences of the students on the school grounds, and the planner´s priorities and proceedings in planning school ground environments. The purpose is, through an understanding of how these three perspectives can unite, to increase knowledge on how school grounds can be planned more socially and ecologically sustainable in the transformative city. This is investigated with a mixed method through site observations, surveys and interviews. The empirical evidence shows a relatively passive relation to the school ground among the students, regardless of the school grounds size and amount of greenery, and generally they prioritize social interaction and mobile phone use during breaks. The interpretation of the empirical material, based on the theory, indicates that it is the quality of the greenery that affects the student’s interest in using the environment. Through the interviews, it emerged that the design of a green framework that offers different spatialities can contribute to a more equal, inclusive and sustainable school ground. The ideal environment of the school ground, which can be considered one that is characterized by natural environments, does not necessarily reflect the student's ideal of it. The students' preferences can however be accommodated within the sustainable framework through continuous design.

Texto completo
Resumen
I carried out several large, manipulative greenhouse and controlled-setting experiments to elucidate Panicum hemitomon growth response as influenced by environmental conditions associated with restoring thick-mat floating marsh. Initially, Panicum hemitomon growth response was assessed in conjunction with manipulated nutrient availability and hydrology. Next, I assessed Panicum hemitomon growth response in conjunction with a suite of substrate and mat or containment materials. Finally, I evaluated Panicum hemitomon growth response, as well as overall created floating marsh vegetated development, using both a multi-species planting approach and a suite of Panicum hemitomon establishment techniques. All partitions of Panicum hemitomon biomass (shoot, rhizome, and root material) were enhanced under nitrogen, and to a lesser extent, phosphorous enrichment. Saturated (not inundated) hydrologic conditions were most conducive for robust growth by all partitions of Panicum hemitomon biomass. Substrate and mat or containment materials had a significant effect on Panicum hemitomon vigor, with peat and peat-containing blended substrate materials being most conducive for vigorous Panicum hemitomon growth. Duralast coconut fiber was the most suitable mat or containment material based not only on measures of plant vigor, but also for reasons associated with strength and stability, as well as buoyancy. The combination of Panicum hemitomon and Ludwigia peploides was superior to any other multi-species treatment tested. Ludwigia peploides was highly resilient to transplanting, grew vigorously in a lateral fashion, produced significantly more biomass than any other secondary species, and enhanced overall mat buoyancy, all key metrics regarding successful floating marsh restoration. Equally as important, the large amount of biomass attained by Ludwigia peploides was not totally at the expense of vigorous Panicum hemitomon growth. With respect to establishment technique, the positive response of Panicum hemitomon rhizome growth to humic acid amendment warrants further study. This research generated data that not only advance the body of general ecological knowledge pertaining to Panicum hemitomon, the dominant macrophyte of thick-mat floating marsh, but equally as important, data that are likely to augment or enhance the creation and restoration of this important freshwater marsh type.

Whytock, Robin C. "Optimising habitat creation for woodland birds : the relative importance of local vs landscape scales". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/27298.

Texto completo
Resumen
Global land-use change and industrialisation has driven biodiversity declines and impaired ecosystem functioning. Recently, there have been large-scale efforts to not only halt habitat loss but create and restore habitat on formerly managed (e.g. agricultural) land. However, although the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on biodiversity are well understood, our understanding of how biodiversity responds to habitat created in a patchy configuration is not. In particular, little is known about the relative importance of local (e.g. patch size) vs landscape scales (e.g. amount of habitat in the landscape) for restoring biodiversity in created habitat. Here, a long-term, large-scale natural experiment (the Woodland Creation and Ecological Networks project) was used to understand how bird species, communities and behaviour respond to woodland created in a patchy configuration on post-agricultural land. I used a combination of direct and indirect survey methods to quantify bird diversity, abundance and vocal behaviour in post-agricultural woodlands of known age in Great Britain. I show that secondary woodlands favour generalist species and older patches contain more individuals and species due to their vegetation structure. In relative terms, local-scale factors such as patch size made the greatest contribution to bird diversity and abundance. Colonisation events drive community assembly in new habitat, and I found that large-scale (km2) habitat patterns were more important than patch-level factors during colonisation of breeding territories by a long distance migrant bird (Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus). Land management practices surrounding a habitat patch can also affect its perceived quality and relative attractiveness to potential colonisers. Using the Eurasian Wren Troglodytes troglodytes as a model species, I found that high proportions of agricultural land at woodland edges caused an increase in perceived predation risk. In conclusion, I suggest that post-agricultural woodlands rapidly provide valuable habitat for generalist woodland birds. Local, patch-level factors (area, vegetation structure) also appear relatively more important than landscape factors for woodland bird communities. Land-managers seeking to maximise the benefits of woodland creation for birds should thus focus on creating large patches with a diverse vegetation structure.

"Can morphologic restoration of hydropower outlet channels create hydraulically suitable spawning and larvae habitats for grayling? : Modelling the effects of environmental measures with HEC-RAS".

The aim of this study was to model if hydraulically suitable habitats for juvenile and spawning grayling could be created by morphological restoration alone in the Bjurfors Övre hydropower outlet channel in the Ume River Basin. The study was done by 2D modelling with HEC-RAS using hourly water flow and level data collected during the period 20160521-20161029. Suitable water depth and velocity values for larvae and spawning grayling were collected from literature. Environmental measures for the Bjurfors Övre outlet channel were designed based on the morphology in outlet channels with documented reproducing grayling populations and large habitat diversities. The outlet channel at present morphology and after morphological modifications were modelled at different flow scenarios (0-369m3/s) and areas of suitable water velocities and depths before and after proposed measures were compared. Results show that suitable velocity areas would increase with a factor of between 1,03-1,81 and the suitable depth areas with a factor of 2,34-19,09 and that suitable depths may be the major limiting factor in current conditions. Results also show that zero-flow events at Bjurfors Övre hydropower plant create unsuitable velocities for larvae and spawning grayling and that the frequency and duration of such events could be more limiting than the mere occurrence of such events. The study indicates that the morphological restoration in hydropeaking outlet channels could improve the availability of habitats with suitability water depth and velocity not only for larvae and spawning grayling, but for other lotic organisms. The study also showed that HEC-RAS modelling is a potential resource effective way to assess to what extent certain proposed environmental measures may create suitable water depths and velocities in hydropeaking outlet channels.

Resumen
To combat the rapid degradation of the Louisiana coast, the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority has planned strategic land building initiatives throughout the Louisiana Gulf coast, including beach nourishment and marsh creation projects. It is commonly agreed that the state lacks sufficient renewable sediment resources to maintain the planned CPRA land building program. However, Louisiana, the state that commonly ranks last in state recycling percentage, recycles an estimated 0.6% of the waste glass consumed in the state. Glass is predominantly silica sand. This thesis evaluates laboratory‑determined characteristics of recycled crushed glass cullet to assess its suitability as a renewable aggregate for beach nourishment and marsh creation projects. Specifically, the research herein evaluates geotechnical and settling characteristics of recycled crushed glass cullet produced in Pearl River, Louisiana. Additionally, this research evaluates the effects on beach nourishment and marsh creation design parameters of blending this material with Gulf coastal sediments.

Resumen
Juvenile justiceAdministration ofNew South Wales.Juvenile delinquentsRehabilitationThis study examines the process of Youth Justice Conferencing in New South Wales within the context of the theory and aims of the restorative justice movement. Analysis of relevant literature and theory suggests that restorative justice is a broad and encompassing movement that entails a decision making process where victims, communities and offenders come together in a joint response to an offence. Although this breadth has allowed and encouraged a proliferation of programs that respond to particular needs and particular demands of culture and social context, the consequence is that both understandings and practices of restorative justices are variable. When theoretical understandings are so varied there will necessarily be a lack of commonality in the way principles are articulated. If practice is not linked directly to principled theory it is inevitable that processes will be vulnerable at all levels to the interaction between context, situations and participant characteristics that may easily deflect the focus from the true purpose of restorative justice. This thesis attempts to clarify the restorative principles relevant to the NSW program with reference to Braithwaite and Pettit???s republican theory (1990) and their notion of dominion. In turn these principles are used to identify five practical elements to be used as a framework to guide youth conferences. Such a framework highlights potential areas for improvement in conference preparation and practice. A case study approach was used to collect data and involved the observation of eighty five Youth Justice Conferences in three New South Wales conferencing regions. As well, one hundred and fifty two currently practising Youth Justice Conferencing practitioners (Police, Conveners, Managers) in New South Wales completed a mail out questionnaire. Findings from the study suggest that conference processes are influenced by the presence or absence of five particular elements: the attendance of victims, the attendance of communities, the attendance of offender support, reparation to victims, communities and offenders and the experience of non-domination during the conference space. However, findings also suggest that ???situational??? factors may mediate these key elements to enhance or compromise the overall process. This thesis suggests that many of the issues arising in NSW conferences result from the failure to articulate the links between restorative justice theory and practice. While in NSW such links may intentionally have been unarticulated in order to encourage a freedom within the process, in reality the lack of clarification has led to a freedom in discretion that sometimes diminishes the chance of success. Therefore it proposes the need for a more articulated translation of theory into principles that will in turn frame practice. In this way the thesis uses the normative theory proposed by Braithwaite and Pettit (1990) to provide an explanatory and ideal framework for best practice in NSW Youth Justice Conferencing.

During the last decades, the number of ponds decreased by more than 50 % in European countries, occasionally reaching up to 90 % in some regions. Their decline in number has led to a strong loss of connectivity between waterbodies. Yet, these small and scattered ecosystems are essential for the life cycle of a high diversity of freshwater species. Land use policies like the creation of Greenways and Blueways in France aim to improve ecological continuities to allow maintenance of existent biological populations and exchanges between them. However, the connectivity between ponds must be considered according to the dispersal abilities of freshwater species and this information often lacks to guide restoration measures. In the present work, we studied the dispersal abilities of dragonflies on several spatial scales and investigated the biological traits and environmental factors that shaped their movements. In the first part, we evaluated the colonization of 20 ponds in Normandy by dragonflies during three years after pond restoration or pond creation. The results highlight high colonization rates during the first year and no difference in species richness was found between newly created or restored ponds. This suggests that restoration of ponds after complete drought should not always be prioritized over pond creation in management strategies. We found that generalist species were more present in the first year after pond creation or restoration, whereas the occurrence of forest specialists increased with the age of the pond. The results also highlighted that the landscape context around ponds (i.e. forest vs. open lands) had an effect on the composition of dragonfly communities. Finally, the total abundance of odonate species was related to the density of other ponds in the surroundings. This result emphasizes that highly connected ponds can support larger populations than isolated ones and thus, be more resilient to perturbations. The second part provides insights into the larval development of Anax imperator and the relationship between morphological traits of larvae and adults. The results suggest that the survival of this species might depend on its body length during the maturation period. We also tried to study the natal dispersal by marking 87 individuals at emergence, but only two males were resighted after the maturation period. Finally, the effect of two water pollutants (i.e. Round-up and DEET) at different concentrations was also investigated on the larval development and adults of Aeshna cyanea. Larvae were reared under laboratory conditions and exposed to concentrations up to 30 mg.L-1 of the two pollutants. No effect of the pollutants was detected on the morphological conditions of larvae or tenerals, suggesting that A. cyanea is tolerant to potential water pollution of ponds. The level of HSP70 stress protein was also similar according to the different treatments, but teneral adults presented higher levels of stress than larvae, suggesting that emergence induced a high stress in the individuals. The third part focuses on the dispersal of A. imperator. We first assessed the local movements within a pond network in the Normandy region

Resumen

Sacrifice often connotes death or some form of lack within popular discourse. The association of sacrifice with death is assumed in some strains of the Christian tradition that employ sacrifice within a penal substitutionary account of the atonement. In this framework, sacrifice is understood as death for the purposes of punishment. This dissertation challenges the identification of sacrifice with death. It presents a reinterpretation of sacrifice through a canonical and literary reading of Old and New Testament texts. Sacrificial practice displayed in Leviticus and Hebrews suggests that sacrifice is oriented at life rather than at death. Specifically, sacrifice in Leviticus aims toward a reinstatement of the good order of creation displayed in Genesis 1. The telos of the Levitical cult is humanity’s redemption and creation’s restoration. Both are achieved on the Day of Atonement described in Leviticus 16 as a Sabbath. Hebrews expands upon the sacrificial logic of Leviticus in presenting Christ’s resurrection as the perfection of the cult. Christ’s sacrifice is his resurrected body, not his death. Christians are called to participate in Christ’s sacrifice, and discipleship assumes a form that challenges society’s deathly sacrifices.

Resumen
The UNESCO World Heritage list, growing by some thirty entries a year, currently contains 756 entries for locations from around the world, some natural and some man-made, and of the man-made objects probably the most famous entries from Southeast Asia comprise the twelfth-century Khmer city of Angkor in Cambodia and the temple of the Borobudur in Java. These, together with other major monuments, like the Acropolis in Athens, and many other monuments, less imposing but equally important historically, were once in a ruinous condition due to natural or man-made forces. Their current completed and preserved state is the result of the application of a rigorous set of scientific, architectural and artistic principles designed to restore the monument to its original form by disassembling and then reassembling the monument after assuring the strength and stability of its foundations and structure. The use of new material is only sanctioned under particular conditions. This technique is known as “Anastylosis” and was only formalized in the 1930s after many successful and less successful attempts at earlier restorations, including that of the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. This thesis considers the development of the technique, starting with the pioneering work of the Dutch in Borobudur in the late nineteenth century and examines its application in detail to several ancient Khmer monuments in Northeast Thailand, in the context of the restoration of a country’s cultural heritage.

Resumen
The dissertation investigates how non-profit organisations (NPOs) can function more efficiently by sharing resources and services. The design responds with the strategy of service integration, by transforming the facilities of POPUP, a single NPO, into a shared services hub for multiple NPOs. POPUP is a People Upliftment Programme in Salvokop, Pretoria, and serves the under-privileged communities of Pretoria with skills development courses. The dissertation aims to create restorative environments for these students and explores the theoretical approaches of regenerative design, biophilic design and restorative environmental design. The premise of the investigation is that humanity has an inherent inclination towards nature and that a healthy human-nature connection enables the healing process. Furthermore, the dissertation follows a contextual approach that responds to the railway heritage significance of Salvokop, the urban condition of disconnection from the Central Business District, as well as the self-restoration of the natural landscape. The study seeks to regenerate the human-nature connection, a manifestation of the connection between the current natural landscape and the urban condition. In this way, restorative environments are created that contribute to the regeneration of people.

Resumen
In the agricultural Midwest, subsurface drainage allows excess water to drain into agricultural channels, which flows into rivers and streams transporting excess nutrients downstream. The construction of an inset floodplain within agricultural channels enhances sedimentation of particulate nutrients and sediment, provides stable conditions for vegetation to establish, increases rates of microbial activity, and promotes denitrification. Sediments were collected from floodplains of two-stage channels and naturally forming floodplain benches in conventional channels to determine the effect of floodplain creation on carbon and nitrogen cycling. Denitrification rates were seasonally measured across the floodplain width using an unamended acetylene inhibition technique (DNFAIT). Composite respiration and denitrification rates were measured through sacrificial microcosms utilizing membrane inlet mass spectrometry (DNFMIMS). While the two-stage reach showed a significant increase in soil organic matter (two-way ANOVA, p < 0.001) and respiration rates (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.039), there was no effect on DNFMIMS rates (two-way ANOVA, p > 0.05). DNFAIT rates at the two-stage reach only showed an increase at locations closest to the channel (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.008). Nutrient processing rates were most dependent on local environmental conditions, particularly organic matter and sediment grain size. This suggests that site-specific conditions may dictate the impact of floodplain creation on water quality. However, because of the increase in biologically active surface area, the net effect on water quality is likely greater for the two-stage channels.

Adopting the literature review approach and the experimental analysis, this thesis aims at the two purposes : (1) discuss the origin and the essence of the division skill of the graphic painting. since Taiwan Restoration in 1945. (2) to apply its techniques to personal art creations. The painting form presented in the division skill of the graphic painting. since 1945 is a typical form and it’s origin could be easily traced. Taiwanese painters of this school, who are generally influenced by Chinese traditional concepts such as the life philosophy and perfect harmony between humans and gods, focus their paintings on poetic and rhythmic images, so they can express more than the paintings appear. Carefully observing the creations, we can see not only how subject and object are perfectly united, and how the combination of sense and sensibility is successfully achieved, but also the harmony between what it looks like and what it really is .The painting style has prevailed since Taiwan restoration in 1945. Currently,it is still active and plays an important role in Taiwan painting society. By literature analysis ,we find that there are four conclusions concerning the division skill of the graphic painting.First, the skills in issue originate from Paul Cezanne,Pablo Ruiz Picasso,Georges Breque,Fernand Leger,Robert Delaunay and Marc Chagall.Second, there are six ways used in creating division paintings. (1)the straight form division (2)the cure form division (3)the edge form division (4)the color region form division (5)the overlap(montage)form division (6)the blend form division .Third, there are various materials inspiring their creations, such as natural scenery, dail activities and the surrealism.Fourth, the skills are so unique that they give such division paintings vivid poetic images. In addition, based on the implications we have learned from the division skill of the graphic painting, the graduate student develops the following painting concepts:(1)unique images:the scene in the paintings may not be realistic, yet is able to reflect the reality interpreted by the painter. (2)existence and nonexistence:dividing the images into existence nonexistence and something in between. (3)poetic ryhme created by lights and shadows. (4)musical harmony among lines and colors. The painting collated in the thesis made not only to apply the skills, but also to express my appreciations and concerns about our society. The two series are “useless concerns”,which focuses on the dark sights of our society, and “beautiful sights”,which appreciates the bright and warm scenery. In sum,the two series clearly described the reality of life by contrasting sadness with happiness.

This study investigates the ambitious work "Pisa. Ein Versuch" that Rudolf Borchardt composed during the years of the Italian exile and published in 1938. The research aims at returning the significance this writing deserves providing a critical analysis of the peculiar reception of the Middle age and its contemporary culture in Borchardt’s work, focusing on the large philological and historical background underlying the text. The study presents an unavoidable and solid contextualization highlighting the intellectual isolation of the author. Conversations with experts and Professors of the Universities of Florence, Paris Sorbonne, and Bonn enabled establishing the depth of the linguistic, philological, historical and literary knowledge the author deploys in this text, which had not been brought into focus so far. Thanks to a precise archival survey the study has shown the importance of the extraordinary reflection on the Provencal Troubadours that Borchardt carries out by linking their poems to the masterpiece by Giovanni Pisano, hosted in the Duomo of Pisa. The study has thus demonstrated the European profile of Borchardt’s work. The research is divided in six chapters, the first chapter provides both a textual and contextual analysis of a writing Borchardt dedicates to Italian towns, where he strongly identifies the possibility of discovering the true nature of the Italian landscape only at the edge of the incessant modernisation process. The inquiry has highlighted how crucial was for Borchardt the influence of Humboldt’s vision with relation to the definition of natural habitat and human civilization. Furthermore, the research examines all the references Borchardt develops in a network where he associates the Italian architectural style with the Italian life-style, figurative art with poetry and shows to what degree all these aspects of the Italian culture and life are derived from the Imperial Roman society. The connection with the Latin culture conducts the research to examine the impressive work of translating the “Divina Commedia” into a medieval archaic German, language that Borchardt himself created, in order to highlight the alterity of Dante in relation to modern culture. The study reconstructs the genesis of the text “Pisa. Ein Versuch” starting from the essays and the public speeches Borchardt held during the second half of the Twenties, all of which converge on the project of the constitution of a new “Mittelalterliche Altertumswissenschaft”. In specifying the features of this new discipline, the study provides an extensive examination of the influence exercised by Stefan George on the thought and on the poetic sensitivity of Borchardt. The central section of the research outlines and discusses Borchardt vision of Pisa as imperial town, opposing the communal parochialism to a multinational or extranational vision that projects Pisa into the future and towards Europe. At the centre of this idea are the characters of Arnaut Daniel, Giovanni Pisano and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. A suggestive reading made possible a confrontation aimed at opposing the conceptual framework of the imperial Romanitas as inherited by Pisa, to the contemporary fascist vision of the Romanitas whose historical ideal the philologist and cultivated author would never accept. The last section of the study discusses the image of the Middle age that Borchardt proposes in his book, showing that if the influence of George and the George-Kreis is clearly evident, Borchardt’s ideal is much more connected to the notion of medieval Europe as evoked by Novalis. At the same time, however, he marks a break with the external influences, proposing a personal interpretation of the story of Pisa, a town that political events has driven to the margins of history and now takes on personal aspects of the author: Pisa and its “Causa victa” embody the biographical condition of the author, evidencing the human drama of Borchardt both as an intellectual and as a man in his more and more sorrowful loneliness, until death took him during the deportation towards Germany.

Heritage buildings, a tangible asset not only has an architectural and structural significance, it brings also one of the most valuable historical places. Restoration projects and renovation projects associated with this type of job are diverse in both size and form. Constantly changing and always applying many new technologies that managers, builders, and restorations want to use to preserve the best values that legacy brings. The combination of BIM and the restoration project has created a new breakthrough. Instead of relying on elements of pure manual workers, it accompanies the technological age to develop this kind of project to a new level. Base on it, the data is systematically perfect, visibility capabilities, the applied parametric model can statistically statistics and more. Although, HBIM has become a trend in restore project throughout the world such as in Egypt, England. But in some developing country, applying BIM as a new way for a new project seem has some not yet issues. Thus, choosing a way can apply both BIM for new project and restoration project, it enables those, government, an individual party to reach two destinations in one pilot study. The historical perspective is assessed through heritage buildings; the project to restore that heritage is one of the specific projects. This paper will focus on analyzing the specificity of the heritage restoration project when applying new technology HBIM to create a common data environment. Based on previous studies on the level of development of the model (LOD), the steps of developing BIM applied in a case study to better realize the pros and cons when applying for a job submit through proven facts. This research paper will also try to find an inadequate point to have an objective view when applied to the traditional wooden house restoration project in Vietnam.

In recent years, the impact of globalization has influenced the economy, industries, and regional development of countries or regions. To find a suitable development orientation and adjustment within the global and regional competition, efforts were made to find new ways in every regional development. During this trend, Place Marketing has become the new dominance. Looking back on the urban development of Europe, the United States, and other advanced countries, when undergoing similar circumstances, it is a more feasible and necessary mean to let the local development lead the overall local economic development. Our government also responded to this trend. In 1998, Ministry of Economic Affairs proposed “Four-year New Taiwan brand commercial district plan from 2008 to 2011”. Its purpose is to integrate local resources, activate local cultures, cohere with local awareness, and extend to create a brand shopping district. Place Brand theory, based on Place Marketing theory, utilizes its strategic identifying factor such as functions of place, self-expressions, emotions…etc., to promote local characteristics, improve the future of Place and attract human resources, tourism and investment, increase Place competitiveness, then to better meet the local marketing policy, promote the brand to create a commercial district. Place Marketing has become a national, regional and the city's major issues in recent years. But Kwong Hing area, which the writer has studied, currently faces the difficulties of local decline and industrial depression due to its fail to develop local characteristics effectively. As a result, by integrating the region’s visual elements such as its humanity, history, industry, tourism, ecology, using Place branding to plan the overall visual design, and fusing into the local identity design and the marketing of visual image, would benefit the development of local characteristics, rebuild the local image, and revitalize a variety of local economic activities. It is the objective of this study.

Resumen
This study presents a conceptual and theoretical framework for peace building and restorative action in the Arctic Barents Region where the Sami of the Scandinavian region live. Based on Johan Galtung´s theory of peace, the study approaches the issue of peace building and restorative action by considering the history of colonialism and the meaningful lessons drawn from it as a pedagogic field and with human development as the goal. Central to this imperative is the issue of cognitive justice. The study explores the peace potential in including indigenous knowledge systems and the ethics embedded in them in the developmental discourse going forward. The word “ethics” is explored within this imperative, with the study arguing that developing an ethical rationality compatible with the goal of peace and human development in this context is not primarily about the mastering of rules and principles or adjusting to modernity´s mores but about something far more fundamental, namely, the work of re-establishing the esteem for the Other – the very fundamental condition of human community – in a context in which respect for the intrinsic value, dignity and individual autonomy of others and therein their active participation in the world, are under severe strain. The remote space that is devoted to this fundamental relation with the Other in today's leading moral-philosophical discourse thus stresses the need to open up new “cognitive spaces” so that wisdom may emanate more freely from non-western traditions in order to expand the range of ethical rationality. This argument is supported by hermeneutical theory, especially that of Gadamer, the core of which is that communicative acknowledgement of the Other must be based exclusively on the Other’s premises, where the world of the Other is prioritised as the key for understanding oneself. The arbitrative lesson of hermeneutics is that true comprehension is not possible by evading the Other. It is at this point that Levinas’ analysis of the “face” becomes central: The Other is experienced “face-to-face”, meaning “without horizons” and refers to an experience before my will and freedom and which implies that I transcend myself when I acknowledge my responsibility for my Self as the responsibility for the Other. The study concludes that building peace by restoring indigenous systems of trust and hospitality is vital in any attempt to cope with current difficulties and for moving forward in a restorative paradigm.

Resumen
The content of this dissertation delineates the crucial and incisive role of the Holy Spirit in terms of God's grand and majestic acts of creation, that is the creation of the multiversity of universes, redemption that is the cross, the exemplar of Christ in self denial, reconciliation and restoration, and his resurrection, that is self-empowerment, self-renewal and self-fulfillment observed within the context of God, being human and the physical organic environment as it interacts with the human acts of personal and social responsibility observed within the context of a five dimensional approach of self-actualization, self-denial, self-empowerment, self-renewal and self-fulfillment, ingested into ones identity, internalised and witnessed as meaningful daily praxis, seen through the prism of the cross and the resurrection. A didactic method has been followed to engender insights into and conviction regarding the relevance of the subject for our present day and a hortatory method to exhort to an obedient response and to urge an appropriate action.
