PERLE (Powerful Energy Recovery Linac for Experiments) est un accélérateur linéaire à recouvrement d'énergie (ERL) basé sur la technologie à cavité radiofréquence supraconductrice qui sera installé au Laboratoire de Physique des 2 Infinis Irène Joliot-Curie (IJCLab) en France. Avec une puissance de faisceau cible de 10 MW, PERLE vise à démontrer le fonctionnement multi-passe à haute intensité en onde continue pour valider des options pour les futures machines à haute énergie, telles que l'ERL de 50 GeV proposé pour LHeC (Large Hadron Electron Collider) et FCC-eh (Future Circular Electron-Hadron Collider), et à accueillir des expériences dédiées en physique des particules et en nucléaire. Dans les ERLs à haute intensité, l'instabilité de Beam Breakup (BBU), résultant de l'interaction entre le faisceau et les modes d'ordre supérieur (HOMs) des cavités, est une préoccupation majeure pour leur fonctionnement stable. Les HOMs induits par le faisceau peuvent augmenter la charge thermique de la cavité à température cryogénique et causer des instabilités du faisceau. Des coupleurs HOM sont installés dans les tubes de faisceau de la cavité pour absorber l'énergie des HOMs et atténuer ces effets. Cette thèse présente la conception et l'optimisation de plusieurs coupleurs HOM coaxiaux pour les cavités elliptiques en Nb avec 5 cellules à 801,58 MHz de la configuration PERLE ERL à 500 MeV. La transmission RF des coupleurs HOM a été optimisée pour améliorer l'amortissement des HOMs les plus dangereux. Les coupleurs HOM optimisés ont été intégrés dans des groupes d'extrémité pour simuler leur performance d'amortissement et leur comportement thermique. Les coupleurs HOM optimisés ont été imprimés en 3D en époxy et revêtus de cuivre. Des mesures RF à faible puissance ont été effectuées sur les coupleurs HOM produits installés dans des cavités en cuivre de type PERLE pour valider leur performance d'amortissement et proposer plusieurs groupes d'extrémité pour la cavité PERLE avec 5 cellules afin d'atténuer les HOMs en dessous des limites d'instabilité BBU The Powerful Energy Recovery Linac for Experiments (PERLE) is an energy recovery linac (ERL) facility based on superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) technology to be hosted at the Laboratoire de Physique des 2 Infinis Irène Joliot-Curie (IJCLab) in France. With a target beam power of 10~MW, PERLE aims to demonstrate the high-current, continuous wave, multi-pass operation to validate options for future high-energy machines, such as the 50 GeV ERL proposed for the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) and the Future Circular Electron-Hadron Collider (FCC-eh), and host dedicated particle physics and nuclear experiments. In high-current ERLs, the regenerative Beam Breakup (BBU), emerging from the beam and cavity Higher Order Modes (HOMs) interaction, is a major concern for their stable operation. Beam-induced HOMs can increase the cavity heat load at cryogenic temperature and cause beam instabilities. HOM couplers are installed in the cavity beam pipes to absorb HOM energy and mitigate these effects. This thesis presents the design and optimization of several coaxial HOM couplers for the 5-cell 801.58 MHz elliptical Nb cavities of the 500 MeV PERLE ERL configuration. The RF transmission of the HOM couplers was optimized to enhance the damping of the most dangerous HOMs. The optimized HOM couplers were integrated into endgroups to simulate their damping performance and thermal behavior. The optimized HOM couplers were 3D-printed in epoxy and copper-coated. Low-power RF measurements were conducted on the produced HOM couplers installed in copper PERLE-type cavities to validate their damping performance and propose several endgroups for the PERLE 5-cell cavity to mitigate HOMs below the BBU instability limits

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR O presente estudo procura examinar a questão da desigualdade de gênero na divisão de tarefas domésticas e responsabilidades familiares entre membros de casais de aeronautas, profissionais da aviação comercial (comissários e pilotos). Procura-se investigar neste subgrupo como ocorre a conciliação entre a vida familiar e o trabalho de turnos alternantes. Utiliza-se como referencial básico a contribuição de cientistas sociais em seus estudos acerca das relações de gênero na contemporaneidade. Homens e mulheres trabalham cada vez mais em horário integral e se veem divididos diante de propostas igualitárias de relacionamento em contraposição a práticas mais tradicionais. Parece que a transformação das mentalidades nas relações de gênero foi insuficiente no que diz respeito a uma divisão mais igualitária das tarefas domésticas. A lacuna deixada pelas mulheres na vida privada, com sua entrada maciça no mercado de trabalho, não foi ocupada por outros, senão por elas próprias, que se dividiram e se multiplicaram em muitas para poder conciliar família e profissão. Após uma revisão de literatura, foram realizadas entrevistas com quatro casais de aeronautas do Rio de Janeiro. Os dados obtidos nas entrevistas entraram em consonância com o que a literatura já vem discutindo sobre casais de outras categorias profissionais. As mulheres casadas e com filhos despendem mais tempo com o trabalho doméstico e com as responsabilidades familiares do que seus maridos. Diante desta constatação, percebe-se que a especialização de papéis ainda está fortemente ancorada nas ideologias de gênero tradicionais que regem os comportamentos de homens e mulheres contemporâneos, produzindo com isto um cenário desfavorável para ascensão profissional das mulheres e para um maior envolvimento dos homens com a vida familiar. The main subject of this study is the gender inequality in the division of household chores and child care between spouses who work as crew members in civil aviation (flight attendants and pilots). This study reports an investigation of the relationships of nonstandard work schedules and family balance. It is based on the several studies conducted by social scientists about gender relations in the contemporary society. Men and women are engaged in full time work and confronted with an egalitarian social discourse and traditional patterns of behavior. It seems that the shift regarding gender relations and more balanced divisions of household chores are still insufficient. Women joined the workforce dealing with multiple roles to balance household chores and career. After reviewing several academic books and articles, interviews with four middle class flight crew members’ couples from Rio de Janeiro were conducted. The results were similar to other studies with couples from other professional categories: married women with children still do much more routine household chores than their husbands. The gender segregation of tasks associated with the traditional gender ideologies contribute to reinforcing the specialized roles, an unfavorable scenario for career development for women and greater involvement of men with family life.

This thesis explores the ways in which transnational same-sex couples construe and experience transnational migration, intimacy, and home. The study was initially born out of the need to contribute to the young, but growing body of scholarly work in relation to queer migration studies. For long, the figure of ‘the migrant’ was founded on heterosexual terms only, thus impeding any possibility of exploring the lives of those with non-normative gender and sexual identities. During the last two decades or so, new scholarship has tried to alter this picture, arguing for a more inclusive assessment of global migration. This project aims to further the scholarly conversations in this regard, but it also wishes to go beyond the traditional economic and political spheres in which the migrant is usually placed in; hence, it promotes a study of migration that is also preoccupied with the intimate and emotional life of LGBT+/queer migrants. In this sense, this research is interested in how 12 transnational same-sex couples (that are also binational) understand and practice intimate life and home. Indeed, examining the life of these couples in migration offers a unique opportunity to delve into the intimate and domestic dimensions of transnational migration, and therefore, to show how the research participants actively negotiated and sustained family life and a sense of belonging in today’s rapidly changing and globalising world. The ‘transnational’ component will be key across this thesis, as it enables the possibility of understanding the couples’ different movements, attachments, networking and (emotional and material) practices that explicate and buttress their migratory journeys. The study was carried through the use of ethnographic techniques, namely, narrative interviewing, observation, and the construction of material culture narratives at the participants’ home(s). This methodological combination allowed for an in-depth and careful exploration of the individual and coupled biographies of the research participants. Particularly, this thesis illustrates how working with material culture brings richness and additional depth to empirical data, as well as it provides new opportunities for creativity and interaction with research participants. In the end, this research project chiefly aims to provide gay men, lesbians, and other non-heterosexuals in transnational relationships additional tools to reflect on their lives, sense of belonging, citizenship status, and the value that is politically and socially bestowed on to their relationships, families and overall personal commitments. Indeed, I wish to bring attention to the intimate side of migration; to the fact that migrants, like the ones in this research, have meaningful and on-going personal and interpersonal attachments and commitments. This is why I argue that studying this can be key to a deeper and better understanding of the phenomenon of migration in the 21st Century.

Resumen

The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experience of parents who have had a homebirth in the past two years in Perth. Studies conducted to date have predominantly used quantitative research methods, investigating the safety of homebirth and comparing home to hospital birth without exploring a couples experiences. A phenomenological approach was used as it seeks to understand human experience in context. The research design consisted of a field study, in which ten parent couples were interviewed and three homebirth videos observed. Data analysis was conducted according to the procedure outlined by Colaizzi (cited in Knaack, 1984, p. 110) which is to describe, interpret and extrapolate common themes and meanings. Of the ten couples interviewed four couples spoke of their first child's homebirth and the remaining six couples had three or four children who had been born at home. Research participants were attended to during their homebirth by one of five registered midwives. The essence of these parents' experiences of homebirth was gained through identifying significant statements from transcripts and field notes then clustering these into themes. The four essential themes were Constructing the Environment, Assuming Control, Birthing, and Resolving Expectations. The research findings provide health professionals and consumers with an insight into homebirth which challenges them to alter their practices and assumptions regarding this birth environment.

Today’s military encompasses a wide variety of families who are affected by deployments in multiple and complex ways. Following deployments, families must reconnect in their relationships and reestablish their way of life. Appropriate and effective communication during this time is critical, yet many military couples struggle with this process. Moreover, student service members/veterans and their families are in a unique position. In addition to coping with changes in their marital relationship, student veterans may feel isolated or unsupported on college campuses, often experiencing anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress, or suicidality. The current study seeks to bridge the gap between the military family literature and the student service member/veteran literature by examining how deployment experiences, mental health issues, and communication patterns influence post-deployment relationship adjustment among student veterans. Analyses tested whether communication style and/or current mental health concerns mediate associations between combat experiences and couples’ relationship adjustment, as well as between experiences in the aftermath of battle and relationship adjustment. Results suggest that although posttraumatic stress is significantly related to deployment experiences among student veterans, participants report no significant negative effects of deployment on relationship adjustment. Communication style, however, was significantly associated with relationship adjustment, and a lack of positive communication was found to correlate with PTSD diagnosis. Research and clinical implications are discussed.

Jones As the United States population ages, knowing and understanding the older adult couple’s experience living with chronic illness at home is significant to inform new strategies of care, and planning of resources for the improvement in the health and well-being for a potentially vulnerable population. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the older adult couple’s experience while living with chronic illness at home by answering the following research questions: What is the life pattern manifested by an older adult couple living with chronic illness at home? Are there common themes across the life patterns of older adult couples living with chronic illness living at home? The theoretical framework guiding this study was Margaret Newman’s Health as Expanding Consciousness using a hermeneutic-dialectic phenomenology method. The study’s sample consisted of 14 married older adults (> 65 years of age) couples living together at home. The research method explored the experiences of the older adult couple through dialogue within the context of their social environment in all its complexity. This approach gave voice to the older adult couples’ experiences and their meaning from their perspective, which facilitated insights about each older adult couple as well as common themes across the older adult couples. Three themes emerged from the study, (1) an unfolding pattern of living meaningfully as an older adult couple with chronic illness while moving through life transitions, (2) couple interconnectedness strengthens the bonding within the older adult couple and promotes self-growth, and (3) a resonating process within the older adult couple promotes movement toward expanding consciousness. Conceptual models are proposed. Le projet FUI12 RLDO – dans le cadre duquel s’inscrit cette thèse – préconise une solution de réseau de topologie en étoile passive pour la montée en débit des réseaux domestiques. Cette solution de réseau rencontre des difficultés dans son implémentation avec la non-uniformité des puissances des ports de sortie des coupleurs multimodes. L’analyse de ce point nous a permis de comprendre que les propriétés des modes de propagation dans les éléments du réseau jouent un rôle clé dans les problèmes rencontrés. Pour caractériser la propagation dans le réseau, nous avons développé un banc de réflectométrie optique complexe dans le domaine fréquentiel. Les phénomènes limitant la sensibilité à la phase – liés en particulier à la non-linéarité du balayage en fréquence de la source laser – sont étudiés pour contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes. Puis les performances de la mesure en intensité et en phase de l’instrument que nous avons mis en place sont testées. Nous avons aussi étudié les conditions de résolution optimales pour caractériser les modes d’un guide multimode et analysé l’incertitude sur la dispersion chromatique dans le cas où il est impossible de déterminer si on a accès à un mode ou plusieurs modes dans un diagramme de dispersion donné. Nous introduisons par la suite une méthode d’analyse temps-fréquence adaptative, permettant d’obtenir les courbes de dispersions avec une résolution optimale. Cette méthode nous a permis de montrer le caractère quasi-monomode, en condition d’excitation monomode, de la fibre multimode spéciale RLDO à 1310 nm et à 1550 nm. L’analyse de la propagation dans les fibres optiques, associée au modèle que nous avons développé pour comprendre le fonctionnement des coupleurs multimodes, a permis d’expliquer les difficultés rencontré avec les premières expérimentations de la topologie de réseau en étoile passive multimode et d’envisager des pistes de réalisation d’un prototype de réseau fonctionnel In order to develop high capacity future-proof home network, the FUI 12 RLDO project suggests passive star network topology using multimode couplers. This topology encounters implementation difficulties due to the non-uniformity of the power distribution in the output ports of multimode couplers. Analyzing this problem shows that the properties of modes propagating in the network elements plays a key role in this non-uniform characteristics of multimode couplers. In order to characterize these modes propagating in the network, we have developed a complex optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) setup. The phenomena limiting the sensitivity to the phase in OFDR – in fact, those related to the non-linear frequency tuning of the laser source - are investigated to contribute to a better understanding of the limiting mechanisms. Then we have tested the intensity and phase measurement performance of the developed setup. Later, we studied the optimal resolution conditions to characterize the modes in a multimode waveguide. We have also analyzed the uncertainty of the measurement of the chromatic dispersion of modes in case where it is impossible to determine whether one or several modes are present in a given dispersion curve. Additionally, we have introduced an adaptive time-frequency method, to obtain the dispersion curves with optimal resolution. This method allows us to show the versatility of the special RLDO multimode fiber (single-mode behavior under single-mode excitation at 1310 nm and 1550 nm). The analysis of the propagation in the optical fibers, associated with a model we have developed to study the behavior of multimode couplers, has permitted to explain encountered difficulties with the experiments of the multimode passive star network topology. Many older couples face the dilemma of one of them developing an illness that results in their ability to cope with everyday living activities. The well spouse may struggle for many years with an increasing workload, both physical and mental. Ultimately, there may come a time, when nursing home placement becomes necessary. The aim of this research was to find out what the experience was like for the wife, with a husband who is ill and faces placement in a nursing home, and to determine whether nurses could do more to help them to cope with this difficult situation. Following ethics approval, nine wives were interviewed over a period of two years. Each of the experience was unique, but there were some common problems that many of the wives mentioned. Loneliness was considered by most of the wives as being extremely upsetting, even when they were living with other people, for example their children. The absence of their partner and long term confident was noticed particularly in the evening when, in the past, they had sat down together and watched television. Other reactions included guilt, grief, depression and a change in the husband/wife relationship. Many of the wives seemed to accept the situation, realising that they could no longer cope with their husband at home, they were also healthier than they had been when their husband was at home. This research has highlighted some important points when a wife finds herself in the situation of having to place her husband in a nursing home, although nurses are unable to assist with many of the effects on the wife of the placement, it is helpful to know that the friendliness of the staff, the care of the patient and the cleanliness and homeliness of the nursing home are helpful at this time Master of Nursing (Hons)

The study explored spousal accuracy and positive marital behavior (PMB) and negative marital behavior (NMB) areas&rsquo three different evaluations which were frequency, emotional impact and attributed importance in distressed and nondistressed couples. Participants of the study were 81 married couples. All 162 spouses filled out Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), Communication Skills Inventory and Information Form. Additionally one spouse in each couple filled out Spouse Observation Checklist (SOC) Form A whereas the other spouse filled out SOC Form B. Spousal accuracy were assessed by partial pairwise intraclass correlation. R-to-z transformation was used to find on which PMB and NMB areas&rsquo accuracy distressed and nondistressed couples differ. Six Repeated Measures MANOVAs were conducted to explore differences in distressed and nondistressed couples wives and husbands self-report and spouse-report in three evaluations of PMB and NMB. In order to find most important PMB and NMB areas&rsquo frequencies in terms of their relationship with marital adjustment, two Roy-Bargmann Stepdown Analysis were conducted by controlling for positive affect, negative affect and communication skills. Principal component analysis was employed to the self and spouse reports of marital behavior areas&rsquo frequencies and then two stepwise multiple regression analyses were used to identify which factors of marital behavior play a significant role in predicting marital adjustment. Results revealed that nondistressed spouses were more accurate in predicting their partners&rsquo reports of emotional impact and attributed importance more frequently engaging in PMB, less frequently engaging in NMB, feel more positive about and attribute more importance to PMB compared to distressed spouses. Spouse report of marital behavior explained more variance than self report of marital behavior NMB and affectional marital behavior explained more variance than PMB in marital adjustment.

Resumen

Cette thèse de sociologie qualitative porte sur les pratiques et les significations des aménagements de l’habitat chez des couples d’individus nouvellement retraités et issus du « Baby-Boom ». Elle rend compte des dynamiques - socio-historiques, identitaires et corporelles, relationnelles et de mode de vie - qui modèlent l’expérience du « vieillir » et de l’ « habiter » de ces individus, et ce, dans une double temporalité : dans le temps présent, à travers les aménagements réalisés et/ou projetés à court terme ; dans l’avenir, à travers les aménagements réalisés par anticipation des risques liés à la vieillesse et/ou projetés à long terme. Les résultats de cette thèse montrent, d’une part, que les aménagements de l’habitat et leurs pratiques afférentes constituent les « supports » d’une transition dans le parcours de vie, pour des « êtres vieillissants sans être vieux » qui arrivent à la retraite et en même temps, au dernier tiers de leur vie. Dans le même mouvement, ils montrent comment les liens et les activités diverses de « pivots générationnels » nouvellement retraités façonnent leur habitat et leur façon d’habiter en début de retraite. D’autre part, les résultats de cette thèse donnent à voir une approche « endogène » de l’adaptation de l’habitat, à l’heure où cette question constitue un enjeu essentiel pour les pouvoirs publics et pour les individus. Cette recherche montre sur ce point comment des Baby-Boomers font preuve, via l’aménagement de leur habitat, d’un empowerment notable au sujet de leur vieillissement présent et à venir, afin de vivre et de vieillir « bien » et si possible, chez eux. Les résultats exposés donnent aussi à penser le potentiel du « confort » pour accompagner les individus issus des générations du Baby-Boom dans la prévention des risques de l’avenir et la préparation de leur vieux jours. En même temps, cette recherche invite à réfléchir à certains freins liés aujourd’hui (encore) à ces questions, tels qu’un imaginaire de la vieillesse profondément négatif, que certaines images et messages véhiculés continuent de nourrir This thesis of qualitative sociology is about practices and meanings of home’s adaptations made by newly retired couples of Baby Boomers. It reports various dynamics – sociological, historical, physical or of identity, relationship and lifestyle - that shape the experience of "ageing" and the "housing" of these individuals, and this in two different time frames : in the present, through realized and /or short-term planned developments; in the future, through the developments made by anticipation of risks linked to the ageing and/or long-term projection. The results of this thesis show, first of all, that the adaptation of housing and related practices constitute some "supports" for this transition in the life course, and for "ageing but not old yet” people coming to retirement and entering the “last third of their life”. In the same time, they show how the relationships and the various activities of newly retired "generational pillars" shape their habitat and way of living in the early retirement period. On the other hand, the results of this thesis give to see an "endogenous" approach to adaptation of housing, at a time when this issue is a major challenge for governments and individuals. Regarding this point of view, this research demonstrates how Baby Boomers show, through the development of their habitat, a significant empowerment about their present and future ageing in order to live and age "good" and if possible, at home. The exposed results also suggest the potential of "comfort" in order to help Baby Boomers in the process of risk’s prevention, for the future and the preparation of their old years. At the same time, this research encourages to think about the obstacles that still exist on these questions, such as the deep negative perception of aging, that certain popular images and messages continue to feed

This study evaluates the efficacy of a self-guided, low-intensity curriculum, Marriage Moments, based on Fowers' (2000) virtues model of marital quality that emphasizes friendship, generosity, justice and loyalty. The Marriage Moments program consists of a guidebook and a video that were designed to strengthen marriages during the transition to parenthood and is used in the context of a home visitation program for first-time parents. Participants in the study included 119 married couples who had recently given birth to their first child. They were assigned to either a treatment, comparison or control group. The treatment group received the Marriage Moments curriculum as well as the Welcome Baby home visitation curriculum, the comparison group only received the Welcome Baby curriculum and the control group received neither program. Data were gathered through a battery of self- and spouse-report measures given at 3-months, 4-months, and 9-months postpartum. Relationship outcome measures included in this study were the Marital Virtues Profile, Revised-Dyadic Adjustment Scale, RELATE Satisfaction subscale, Transition Adjustment Scale, Father Involvement Scale, Household Labor Scale, and Maternal Depression Scale. Despite positive evaluations of the program from participants, analyses revealed a lack of significant, positive effects for members of the treatment group. Further research is needed before reliable conclusions can be drawn about the value of a marital virtues model as a guide for low intensity intervention.

Ces travaux de thèses ont pour objectif de présenter les résultats obtenus sur l'assemblage de deux couples de matériaux métal - céramiques par thermocompression : Inconel®625 / Alumine et TZM / Carbure de silicium. Elle se place dans la continuité des résultats obtenus sur des assemblages similaires, au sein du laboratoire IRCER, en étudiant la faisabilité de liaisons direct et de liaison après préoxydation de la partie métallique. Une partie est dédiée à la compréhension du mécanisme d’oxydation de l’inconel®625 en utilisant une thermobalance à insertion à chaud. A l’aide des cinétiques obtenues, le mécanisme d’oxydation est alors proposé et les conditions de préoxydation pour la partie d’assemblage suivante ont pu être déterminées. Ensuite au cours de ce manuscrit sont rapportés les procédés utilisés et les résultats obtenus après variations de paramètres tels que la température ou le temps de palier de traitement thermique sur les assemblages des deux couples. L'absence de formation d'une interphase pour le couple Inconel®625 / Alumine et la formation d'une interphase complexe pour le couple TZM / Carbure de silicium permette de proposer deux études différentes de liaison céramique- métal. Une partie est également consacrée à la caractérisation de la liaison obtenue, dans chaque cas, afin de déterminer sa tenue et expliquer ses propriétés à l'aide de la microscopie électronique à balayage mais aussi une simulation numérique pour le couple Inconel®625 / Alumine et des tests de tractions pour le couple TZM / Carbure de silicium This work has for objective to present the results obtained for the ceramic-metal bonding by hot-pressing in two cases: Inconel®625 / Alumina and TZM / Silicon carbide. All the thesis take place according to the last results obtained for similar bonding, in the laboratory IRCER, by studying the feasibility of direct bonding and bonding after pre-oxidising the metal part. A part of this study is then dedicated to the oxidation behaviour of inconel®625 under CO2 using a thermobalance with a sample hot introduction. Using the oxidation kinetics obtained, the reaction mechanism is proposed and the conditions for the metal pre-oxidation determined.Then during the manuscript are presented the processes and the results obtained after variations of parameters such as temperature and the heat treatment time for the two couples of materials. The absence of inter-phase formation in the couple Inconel®625 / Alumina and the formation of a complex inter-phase in the couple TZM / Silicon carbide allow us to propose two studies with different metal-ceramic bonding.A last part is dedicated to the characterization and the understanding of the bonding obtained in each case. To explain the properties of the samples obtained we used scaning electron microscopy but also numerical simulation for the first couple Inconel®625 / Alumina and tensile test for the second couple TZM / Silicon carbide

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Este trabalho tem como propósito estudar a queerness de relacionamentos entre mulheres heterossexuais e homens gays no romance A Home at the End of the World, de Michael Cunningham, e no seriado de televisão Will & Grace. O objetivo é analisar tais relacionamentos do ponto de vista das personagens femininas principais Clare e Grace, respectivamente , comparando e contrastando os textos literário e televisual. A dissertação fundamenta-se nos conceitos teórico-metodológicos da teoria queer, nos quais se baseia a análise das personagens e de seus relacionamentos. Contudo, à medida que estabelece um diálogo entre um romance e um programa televisual, foi adicionado um capítulo sobre teoria da televisão. Além de fornecer uma visão geral sobre tal teoria, o capítulo mostrou-se relevante na discussão de Will & Grace. Por meio do estudo mais aprofundado da teoria queer percebe-se que queerness, ao invés de uma identidade fixa, pode ser mais bem compreendida como uma atitude de resistência às normas sociais heteropatriarcais. Portanto, apesar das aspirações convencionais de Grace e Clare, ambas agem de forma queer em várias situações, provando que queerness é um posicionamento que todos podem assumir; até mesmo os heterossexuais The purpose of this work is to study the queerness of relationships between straight women and gay men in Michael Cunninghams novel A Home at the End of the World and in the TV sitcom Will & Grace. The intention is to analyze such relationships from the point-of-view of the main female characters Clare and Grace, respectively , comparing and contrasting the literary and televisual texts. The theoretical-methodological core of this thesis lies on the concepts of queer theory, based on which the characters and their relationships have been analyzed. However, as it establishes a dialog between a literary work and a TV show, a theoretical chapter on television theory has been added. While providing an overview of television theory, this chapter has also been really relevant in the discussion of Will & Grace. Through a deeper study of queer theory, one realizes that queerness, instead of a fixed identity, may be better understood as an attitude of resistance to heteropatriarchal social rules. Therefore, in spite of Graces and Clares conventional aspirations, they both act queerly in several situations, proving that queerness is a positionality which everyone may assume; even straight people

Le projet FUI12 RLDO – dans le cadre duquel s’inscrit cette thèse – préconise une solution de réseau de topologie en étoile passive pour la montée en débit des réseaux domestiques. Cette solution de réseau rencontre des difficultés dans son implémentation avec la non-uniformité des puissances des ports de sortie des coupleurs multimodes. L’analyse de ce point nous a permis de comprendre que les propriétés des modes de propagation dans les éléments du réseau jouent un rôle clé dans les problèmes rencontrés. Pour caractériser la propagation dans le réseau, nous avons développé un banc de réflectométrie optique complexe dans le domaine fréquentiel. Les phénomènes limitant la sensibilité à la phase – liés en particulier à la non-linéarité du balayage en fréquence de la source laser – sont étudiés pour contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes. Puis les performances de la mesure en intensité et en phase de l’instrument que nous avons mis en place sont testées. Nous avons aussi étudié les conditions de résolution optimales pour caractériser les modes d’un guide multimode et analysé l’incertitude sur la dispersion chromatique dans le cas où il est impossible de déterminer si on a accès à un mode ou plusieurs modes dans un diagramme de dispersion donné. Nous introduisons par la suite une méthode d’analyse temps-fréquence adaptative, permettant d’obtenir les courbes de dispersions avec une résolution optimale. Cette méthode nous a permis de montrer le caractère quasi-monomode, en condition d’excitation monomode, de la fibre multimode spéciale RLDO à 1310 nm et à 1550 nm. L’analyse de la propagation dans les fibres optiques, associée au modèle que nous avons développé pour comprendre le fonctionnement des coupleurs multimodes, a permis d’expliquer les difficultés rencontré avec les premières expérimentations de la topologie de réseau en étoile passive multimode et d’envisager des pistes de réalisation d’un prototype de réseau fonctionnel In order to develop high capacity future-proof home network, the FUI 12 RLDO project suggests passive star network topology using multimode couplers. This topology encounters implementation difficulties due to the non-uniformity of the power distribution in the output ports of multimode couplers. Analyzing this problem shows that the properties of modes propagating in the network elements plays a key role in this non-uniform characteristics of multimode couplers. In order to characterize these modes propagating in the network, we have developed a complex optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) setup. The phenomena limiting the sensitivity to the phase in OFDR – in fact, those related to the non-linear frequency tuning of the laser source - are investigated to contribute to a better understanding of the limiting mechanisms. Then we have tested the intensity and phase measurement performance of the developed setup. Later, we studied the optimal resolution conditions to characterize the modes in a multimode waveguide. We have also analyzed the uncertainty of the measurement of the chromatic dispersion of modes in case where it is impossible to determine whether one or several modes are present in a given dispersion curve. Additionally, we have introduced an adaptive time-frequency method, to obtain the dispersion curves with optimal resolution. This method allows us to show the versatility of the special RLDO multimode fiber (single-mode behavior under single-mode excitation at 1310 nm and 1550 nm). The analysis of the propagation in the optical fibers, associated with a model we have developed to study the behavior of multimode couplers, has permitted to explain encountered difficulties with the experiments of the multimode passive star network topology. Many older couples face the dilemma of one of them developing an illness that results in their ability to cope with everyday living activities. The well spouse may struggle for many years with an increasing workload, both physical and mental. Ultimately, there may come a time, when nursing home placement becomes necessary. The aim of this research was to find out what the experience was like for the wife, with a husband who is ill and faces placement in a nursing home, and to determine whether nurses could do more to help them to cope with this difficult situation. Following ethics approval, nine wives were interviewed over a period of two years. Each of the experience was unique, but there were some common problems that many of the wives mentioned. Loneliness was considered by most of the wives as being extremely upsetting, even when they were living with other people, for example their children. The absence of their partner and long term confident was noticed particularly in the evening when, in the past, they had sat down together and watched television. Other reactions included guilt, grief, depression and a change in the husband/wife relationship. Many of the wives seemed to accept the situation, realising that they could no longer cope with their husband at home, they were also healthier than they had been when their husband was at home. This research has highlighted some important points when a wife finds herself in the situation of having to place her husband in a nursing home, although nurses are unable to assist with many of the effects on the wife of the placement, it is helpful to know that the friendliness of the staff, the care of the patient and the cleanliness and homeliness of the nursing home are helpful at this time

La tesi analizza il significato dell'abitazione nella società contemporanea, dove il processo di individualizzazione e la crescente importanza dell'esperienza quotidiana come spazio in cui i soggetti costruiscono il senso del loro agire, rendono la casa un oggetto di studio privilegiato. La trattazione si apre con un'analisi dell'abitare che prende in considerazione i principali significati legati alla casa, riconducibili essenzialmente alle due sfere semantiche dei termini inglesi house e home, e traccia una breve storia dello spazio domestico italiano dagli anni cinquanta fino ai giorni nostri. Successivamente, l'analisi viene contestualizzata nella cultura italiana contemporanea; innanzitutto, l'attenzione è puntata sulla house, con la descrizione del quadro abitativo attuale da un punto di vista quantitativo e strutturale. Poi, ci si sofferma sulla home, con l'analisi della relazione tra la casa, i bisogni e la cultura nella società contemporanea e, in particolare, viene approfondito il ruolo dell'abitazione come strumento di comunicazione dell'identità. Dopo questo inquadramento generale, il focus si sposta sulle giovani coppie: con riferimento ai risultati della ricerca empirica, vengono descritte le tappe del processo del “metter su casa” e il modo in cui oggi si caratterizza il rapporto tra le giovani coppie e l'abitazione. The thesis analyses the meaning of the couple house/home in contemporary society. The actual social context is characterized by a process of individualization and by the increasing importance of daily experience as a space where individuals try to build the meaning of their behaviour: these elements make house/home an interesting subject of study. The thesis starts with an analysis of inhabiting and of its main meanings, which are essentially linked to the two semantic areas of house and home, and describes a short history of Italian domestic space from fifties to our days. Then, the analysis focuses on contemporary Italian culture; first, the reasoning points attention towards the house, with the description of the actual dwelling situation from a quantitative and structural point of view. Then, the treatment examines the home, with the analysis of home-needs-culture relation, and, in particular, analyses the home role as an identity communication tool. After the analysis of the general situation, the focus moves to young couples: with reference to the empiric research, the treatment describes the steps of the “step up house” process and the particular relation between young couples and their home.

Their reflexes had beginning in Brazil starting from the second half of the century XX and it was resulted of the reduction in the fertility/mortality taxes, of the urbanization and of the increase of the life expectancy of the people. In the same way as there is the increase of the number of senior people, there is also a crescent disputes for new manners of living. Such fact lifts inherent questions of social stamp when living of the seniors in the Institutions of Long Permanence (ILPI), fear of this research, that he/she had as objective lifts the residents' of the Instituição Assistencial Nosso Lar, in Santo André-SP and to know the moments for two lived by the couples there residents, contributing to the implementation of public politics of home for senior. For so much he/she was employee the method of qualitative approach, using the interview semi-structured to pick four resident seniors' depositions in the researched Institution. We observed that the relationships to two in the Institution are permeated of prejudices so much on the part of the administration, that is not prepared to welcome seniors' couples, as on the part of the other interns, that you/they act with strangeness due to the rare moments of affectivity of the couples. It was also noticed a retraction on the part of the subjects interviewees in relation to the questions about the sexuality, once they became shy when verbalizing their moments of intimacy. We noticed that this is a theme that it still lacks studies more deepened and of operationalization of Public Politics of house for seniors so that these subjects have his/her respected citizenship when they choose an ILPI as home and place to live to two O crescimento expressivo da população idosa é um fenômeno mundial. Seus reflexos tiveram início no Brasil a partir da segunda metade do século XX e foi resultado da redução nas taxas de fertilidade/mortalidade, da urbanização e do aumento da expectativa de vida das pessoas. Do mesmo modo como há o aumento do número de pessoas idosas, há também uma crescente demanda por novos modos de morar. Tal fato levanta questionamentos de cunho social inerentes ao morar dos idosos nas Instituições de Longa Permanência (ILPI), tema desta pesquisa, que teve como objetivo levantar o perfil dos residentes da Instituição Assistencial Nosso Lar, em Santo André SP e conhecer os momentos a dois vividos pelos casais ali residentes, contribuindo para a implementação de políticas públicas de moradia para idosos. Para tanto foi empregado o método de abordagem qualitativa, utilizando a entrevista semi-estruturada para colher depoimentos de quatro idosos residentes na Instituição pesquisada. Observamos que os relacionamentos a dois na Instituição são permeados de preconceitos tanto por parte da administração, que não está preparada para acolher casais de idosos, quanto por parte dos outros internos, que agem com estranhamento diante dos raros momentos de afetividade dos casais. Notou-se também uma retração por parte dos sujeitos entrevistados em relação aos questionamentos sobre a sexualidade, uma vez que se acanharam ao verbalizar seus momentos de intimidade. Percebemos que este é um tema que ainda carece de estudos mais aprofundados e de operacionalização de Políticas Públicas de habitação para idosos para que estes sujeitos tenham sua cidadania respeitada no momento em que escolherem uma ILPI como moradia e local para viver a dois

Syftet med denna studie var att ta reda på om en kortare massage i hemmet kan bidra med stressreducering hos kärlekspar och om en instruktionsvideo för att lära ut massage kan vara en bra metod. En kvalitativ och kvantitativ ansats har använts, även kallat mixed methods. Deltagarna var 18 personer, som alla ingick i kärleksrelationer. Inledningsvis fick de titta på en inspelad kort informationsvideo om massage för att sedan med stöd av en inspelad 20 minuter lång instruktionsvideo massera varandra på rygg och nacke. Före och efter att de gett och fått massage, skulle de också svara på en webbenkät. Resultaten från enkäten visade att stressnivån sjönk hos både de som gett (p=0,0463) och de som fått (p=0,001) massage. Av de som fått massage kände alla sig avslappnade efteråt och majoriteten (83,3%) kände sig lugna. De som gett massage kände sig även de mer lugna (77,8%) efteråt. Ingen av deltagarna uppgav att de kände sig stressade efter massagen. En instruktionsvideo visade sig, genom svaren från webbenkäten, vara en bra metod för att lära ut massage till kärlekspar. The aim of this study was to find out if a shorter massage at home can contribute to stress reduction in love couples and if an instructional video for teaching massage can be a good method. A qualitative and quantitative approach has been used, also called mixed methods. The participants were 18 people, all of whom were involved in love relationships. Initially, the participants had to watch a recorded short information video about massage and then, with the support of a recorded 20-minute instructional video, massage each other on the back and neck. Before and after giving or receiving a massage, they also had to respond to an online survey. The results from the survey showed that the stress level decreased in both those who gave (p = 0.0463) and those who received (p = 0.001) massage. Of those who received massage, all felt relaxed afterwards and the majority (83.3%) felt calm. Those who gave massages also felt calmer (77.8%) afterwards. None of the participants stated that they felt stressed after the massage. An instructional video proved, through the answers from the web survey, to be a good method for teaching massage to love couples.

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 193-206) This thesis describes a family variation among urban Nigerian couples called a commuter marriage. A commuter marriage in this study is defined as a union between a dual earner/dual career couple where the husband and wife have decided to live apart from each other due to work commitments until such a time as is convenient for them to live continuously together again. This separation is mainly undertaken to improve their financial and career prospects. The study seeks to understand what dynamics are involved in a commuter marriage in Jos, Plateau State. The Life Course Perspective, with a focus on the gendered life course perspective, serves as a theoretical framework for this study. The perspective assumes that families undergoing the same transitions are likely to display the same characteristics which may not be necessarily relevant for all families in the same life stage, while the gendered life course perspective acknowledges the gendered context. At the same time the cultural context of the Nigerian society in terms of family norms are taken into account. An overview of commuter marriages, including characteristics of commuter marriages and non-traditional marriages linked to commuter marriages are provided. The differences between established and adjusting couples were repeatedly underlined. The research has an underlying interpretivist paradigm, therefore a qualitative research methodology was deemed best for the study. A semi-structured interview guide and time diaries were used to obtain data from seventeen participants. It was found that a commuter marriage is costly financially, socially and emotionally. An emphasis on the male provider and the wife as the manager of the resources was highlighted. Commuter couples report that their greatest support system constitute their family members who show the most understanding to their situation. Commuter fathers were generally passionate about their fatherly roles, but had conflicting feelings about balancing work and family, feeling the family is losing out. Generally, commuter couples in this study showed a sincere desire for the commuting relationship not to span an indefinite amount of time. Sociology D. Phil. (Sociology)

Le nombre d'unions où les deux conjoints n'ont pas la même langue maternelle est en augmentation depuis les dernières décennies au Québec. Sachant que les enfants issus de ces unions gravitent dans un univers familial plurilingue, l'objectif de ce mémoire est de connaître les langues qui leur sont transmises. En utilisant les données du questionnaire long du recensement canadien de 2006, nous avons procédé à différentes analyses descriptives nous permettant de cerner les langues maternelles véhiculées aux enfants issus d'une union mixte, de vérifier si ces enfants héritent davantage de la langue maternelle de leur mère ou de leur père et s'ils opèrent des substitutions linguistiques avant l'âge de 18 ans, c'est-à-dire si leur langue maternelle diffère de leur langue d'usage. De plus, par le biais de régressions logistiques, nous avons étudié les déterminants contextuel, ethno-culturel et socio-économique les plus susceptibles d'expliquer le choix de la langue transmise aux enfants. Les résultats obtenus démontrent la place prédominante des langues officielles canadiennes, au détriment des langues non officielles, chez les familles exogames. De plus, le choix de la langue maternelle transmise s'avère principalement conditionné par le lieu de résidence, le parcours migratoire des parents et le pays de naissance des enfants. The number of unions where both partners do not share the same mother tongue has grown substantially over the last decades in Quebec. Given that children born to these unions live in a multilingual family setting, the purpose of this research is to study the mother tongue transmitted to these children. Using the 2006 Canadian census long-form questionnaire, we first conducted various descriptive analyses. These were intended to identify the mother tongue transmitted to children born to mixed-language unions, to ascertain whether children inherit either their mother or father's mother tongue, and to determine if a language shift occurs before the age of 18 years old, in other words whether their mother tongue differs from the principal language they use at home. In addition, through logistic regressions, we examined the contextual, ethnocultural and socioeconomic determinants explaining the choice of the language transmitted to children. The results show the predominance of the two official Canadian languages in mixed-language families, at the expense of non-official languages. Furthermore, the choice of the mother tongue transmitted is mainly conditioned by the place of residence, the parent's migration path and the children's birthplace.
