Grinling Gibbons’s still-life sculpture emerged out of the artistic and proto-scientific culture of the seventeenth-century Netherlands and was understood in these intellectual terms by the sophisticated, courtly consumers of his work in Restoration England. Our fondness for a myth of Gibbons as a dazzlingly skilful but intellectually vapid artist should not blind us to the intellectual focus of his sculptures. The carved frame for Elias Ashmole’s portrait in the Ashmolean collection is a sophisticated engagement with European cultures of collecting. The Cosimo panel for Charles II engages with the witty and formidably advanced scientific discourses of the Caroline court, while the limewood reredos in St James’ church, Piccadilly reaches back to the devotional roots of floral still life, reinterpreting it in the context of English Protestantism.

Resumen
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Cultural heritage includes several cases of missing architectural element or entire buildings, due to destruction, replacement or radical changes caused over time by other structures. The investigation of these lost elements aimed at their virtual reconstruction, for both scientific and cultural-leisure applications, is therefore a topic of great interest. To this purpose, methodologies for surveying and photogrammetric processing provide a very powerful tool, extracting descriptive and geometric information, both 2-and 3-D, using diverse archive images. This paper presents the issues related to the use of archive images in photogrammetry, pointing out the need for an integrated approach to operations of virtual reconstruction of lost volumes. This approach provides a multidisciplinary effort, in order to evaluate all iconographic sources, of which images processed by geomatics techniques are a component. The paper also presents the early results of a reconstruction project of the <i>Palazzo di Cosimo de’ Medici</i>, in the <i>Fortezza Vecchia</i> site (Livorno, Italy), heavily damaged by World War II bombings and subsequently razed.</p>

Resumen
AbstractVenous thromboembolism (VTE) presents a continuing clinical burden to healthcare systems and there are patient groups for whom VTE management is challenging. Depending on the patient profile, the optimal duration of anticoagulation for VTE treatment can be unclear. EINSTEIN CHOICE was a Phase III, randomized, double-blind trial that compared the safety and efficacy of two once-daily (od) doses of the direct, oral factor Xa inhibitor rivaroxaban (20 and 10 mg) with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA; 100 mg daily) for prevention of recurrent VTE. Extended therapy with rivaroxaban at either dose was more effective than ASA at preventing recurrent VTE without increasing bleeding risk. Another group that is challenging to treat in the context of VTE is patients with cancer-associated thrombosis. Cancer is associated with a hypercoagulable state, while cancer treatment itself may increase VTE risk. Evidence supporting the use of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in patients with cancer is growing through specifically designed studies. Cancer Associated thrombosis—expLoring soLutions for patIentS through Treatment and prevention with rivarOxaban (CALLISTO) is an international research program exploring the role of rivaroxaban for the prevention and treatment of cancer-associated thrombosis. Here, we present overviews of three CALLISTO studies: PRO-LAPS II, CASTA-DIVA and COSIMO. Currently available and anticipated results from studies in a variety of patients at risk of or with VTE will provide valuable insights and seek to optimize future VTE management.

Resumen
Abstract It has been known for twenty-five years that Alessandro Striggio the elder, the most important composer at the Medici court in Florence in the 1560s and 1570s, wrote a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass in forty parts, with an Agnus Dei in sixty parts, but the piece has always been thought lost. This major artwork from the high Florentine Renaissance does in fact survive (F-Pn, Rés. Vmd. ms 52). Entitled Missa sopra Ecco sìì beato giorno, it is Striggio's most imposing composition, and underlines the early eminence of Florence in the art of massive polychoral writing. The last movement is indeed in sixty real parts. The Mass also appears to have been used by the Medici as a political tool in the art of cultural diplomacy. Offered in January 1567 to Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II at exactly the moment when Cosimo de' Medici was seeking approval from Maximilian of a royal title (granted finally as “Grand Duke” by Pope Pius V in 1569), the Mass was also performed by Lassus's colleagues in Munich and under Striggio's direction at court in France, a few weeks before he visited the court of Queen Elizabeth I in London in June 1567. The links with Striggio's forty-part motet Ecce beatam lucem and with Thomas Tallis's Spem in alium, are discussed, as are the reasons why the source of the Mass remained unknown throughout the twentieth century.

Resumen
В. Resumen
In July 1552 the city of Siena rebelled against its Spanish overlords that had either influenced or directed the Republic’s government for several years, threw out the Spanish garrison that controlled the city, and open its doors to a French army sent by King Henri II to protect the city and bring it into the French sphere of influence. The man in charge of this army was the French marshal Blaise de Monluc (1500–1577), who arrived shortly after the anti-Spanish insurrection and remained until the end of the siege when the city, exhausted and depleted, finally surrendered to a mercenary army hired by the duke of Florence, Cosimo I de’ Medici, on behalf of Emperor Charles V von Habsburg. In his memoires of his military campaigns, Blaise de Monluc recalls his Sienese years and especially the valour of the women of Siena who contributed in no small way to the defence of their city. This article outlines the events before and during the siege and Monluc’s comments about the women of Siena. It then analyses these comments in order to gain a better understanding of what, exactly, the women did for their city and who these women were.

Background:Hip Osteoarthritis (OA) is a widespread disease characterized by pain and functional impairment, which, particularly in the elderly, may compromise overall health and quality of life. In the last decades, Intra-articular (I.a.) injections of hyaluronic acid (HA) gained more space among the conservative treatment of OA because of their beneficial effects and positive outcomes without relevant complications. (1,2). An innovative and patented formulation containing hybrid cooperative complexes of sodium hyaluronate 2.4% + sodium chondroitin non-sulfated 1.6% of biotechnological origin (HA-SC) has been recently developed for the I.a. treatment of hip OA and evaluated in a pilot study (3).Objectives:1) Primary aim: Evaluation of the safety of HA-SC in the treatment of symptomatic hip OA; 2) Secondary aim: Evaluation of the efficacy of HA-SC in terms of pain reduction (VAS) and function improvement (Lequesne) of the affected hip joint. Methods:This is a pilot, multicentric, open, prospective study. The following inclusion criteria were established: Patients (both genders) aged ≥ 40 years suffering for primary hip OA confirmed by X-Ray; Grade I-II-III according to K&L grading scale; Basal VAS pain at the target hip > 40 mm; Failure of at least two lines of conservative treatments. All patients underwent a single I.a. hip injection of a 3mL vial of HA-SC and followed-up for six months.Results:48 patients have been enrolled and completed the study. The treatment was generally well-tolerated, with only ten patients out of 48 (20.8%) reporting local effects mainly consisting of injection site pain and arthralgia localized in the treated area. All these patients completed the study. The treatment with HA-SC was associated with a statistically significant decrease of VAS scale from a basal value of 67.5 (mean) to 22.8 (mean, p<0.0001) at the end of the observation period at six months, with a statistically significant decrease at seven days of follow-up evaluation (29.3, mean, p<0.0001). The mean Lequesne’s Index total score after the single injection of HA-SC decreased from a baseline value of 10.4 (mean) to 5.1 (mean, p<0.0001) at six months. The decrease was marked and significant also at any of the other evaluated time point (p<0.0001).Conclusion:A single I.a. injection of the innovative formulation containing hybrid cooperative complexes of sodium hyaluronate + sodium chondroitin non-sulfated (HA-SC) showed to be well tolerated and safe in the treatment of symptomatic hip OA. A rapid and significant decrease in hip pain (VAS) and Lequesne’s Index was also observed starting immediately after the I.a. injection and lasting until the end of the follow-up period. However, conservative treatment of hip OA is still challenging. This new formulation could represent a promising, long-lasting, and effective I.a. treatment.References:[1]Papalia R. et al. J. Biol. Resumen
AbstractSources show that the Flemish artist Johannes Stradanus, whose career flourished from about 1555 in Florence, collaborated on several occasions on large-scale, temporary decorations, most of them commissioned by the grand dukes de'Medici, for important dynastic events such as baptisms, entries into cities and funerals. A multitude of artists and craftsmen carried out these decorations on the basis of often complicated iconographic programmes. In 1564, for instance, on the occasion of Michelangelo's funeral in S. Lorenzo, Stradanus painted the grisaille Michelangelo in 1529 in his dwelling in the Giudecca being received by the nobles of Venice by order of the Doge Andrea Gritti and the Signoria. In 1565, for the triumphal entry into the city of Johanna of Austria, he painted all the pictures decorating the triumphal arch erected on the Canto de' Tornaquinci. These consisted of five scenes glorifying the following exploits of rulers of the House of Austria: Rudolf conferring the Archdukedom of Austria on Albrecht I, Maximilian II being crowned emperor, Ferdinand I defending Vienna against the Turks, Albrecht slaing Adolf of Nassau in a battle, Philip II of Spain receiving the corona obsidionalis from Malta and two large trompe-l'oeil street views. In 1574, for the funeral of Cosimo I de'Medici in S. Lorenzo, Stradanus was probably involved in the painting of the skeletons and coats of arms. Furthermore, on the occasion of Francesco I de' Medici's funeral in S. Lorenzo in 1587, he painted the grisaille Francesco visiting his betrothed, Johanna of Austria, in Innsbruck; in 1588, for the entry of Ferdinando I de' Medici into Pisa, the canvas The burial of Pope Stephen I in the catacomb of Callixtus for the decoration of S. Stefano dei Cavalieri; in 1589, for the entry of Christina of Lorraine, the painting The retreat of the Turks after the siege of Vienna, as part of the decorations on the Canto de' Bischeri. Finally, in 1598, for the obsequies in memory of Philip II of Spain in S. Lorenzo, the grisaillc The siege and capture of Antwerp; for the same occasion he also provided the design for the grisaille The conquest of the Philippine islands, painted by his son Scipione. Stradanus' first commissions date from the start of his career in Florence, when he was working in Vasari's studio. As one of the master's assistants in decorating the Palazzo Vecchio, he had already gained ample experience in large-scale painting for the Medici. After leaving Vasari's studio in about 157 and setting up as an independent artist, Stradanus remained one of the leading Florentine artists who received commissions for official large-scale decors. He retained this status up to a venerable age, a sign of the appreciation he continued to enjoy in this field. Unfortunately none of Stradanus' decorative work has survived, with the exception of the canvas in Pisa. An impression of his skill in this field in conveyed by contemporary sources and the sketches, drawings, etchings and engravings presented in this article. This material clearly shows that in his long and productive life Stradanus was not only active as a painter of frescos and altarpieces and a designer of tapestries and engravings, but also played a prominent role at the court of the Medici as a painter of decorations.

Background:bDMARDs have an effect on glucose homeostasis (1), lipoproteins profile (2; 3) and blood pressure (4). However, with the exception of obesity (5; 6), there are no clear data on how bDMARDs work in patients who already have or develop metabolic comorbidities and whether these conditions can impact on their efficacy and safety profile. Objectives:to evaluate, in chronic inflammatory joint diseases, the effect of arterial hypertension (AH), dyslipidemia (DYS) and diabetes mellitus (DM) on efficacy, safety and retention rate of first-line bDMARDs therapy. Methods:a retrospective observational study on the clinical charts of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) or Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), treated with first on-label bDMARD was performed. Data on adverse events, efficacy and comorbidities at the baseline visit in which the bDMARD was prescribed (BL), the visit performed after 6 months of therapy (6M), and the last visit on treatment (LoT) were collected.Results:383 patients (41,8% RA, 33,4% PsA and 24,8% AS) were included in the study, with the predominance of females (F: 67,36%, M: 32,64%; mean age 51,67 ± 15,11 years). Our data show that the presence of comorbidities had no influence on efficacy of bDMARD, while patients who had DYS at BL manifested a higher rate of systemic adverse events either in the first 6 months of therapy (58,9% vs 43,7%, p=0,040) and also later on (80,36% vs. 66,67%, p=0,046). In addition, patients who developed DYS and AH after the 6M visit reported a higher rate of systemic adverse events at LoT visit, compared to others (DYS: 97,8% vs 66,7%, p<0,001; AH: 86,9% vs 65,2%, p=0,031). For what concerns the retention rate, patients who developed DYS or AH during bDMARD treatment continued the drug for a longer period of time (DYS 95,5 vs 19,6 months, p<0,001; AH 72,1 vs 23,4 months, p<0,001). In particular, patients with AH who concomitantly carried out therapy with ACE-inhibitors (ACEi) and/or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB) continued bDMARDs for nearly 20 more months than patients who were not exposed to these drugs (40,5 vs 23,4 months, p=0,001) and more frequently maintained the bDMARDS at LoT (59,42% vs. 47,53%). In case of withdrawal in the ACEi/ARB exposed cohort, this was due to well-being and disease remission rather than inefficacy or adverse reaction (p=0,025). In dyslipidemic patients treated with statins, data showed that bDMARDs were continued for a longer time than in DYS patients treated with other anti dyslipidemic therapies (41,09 vs. 26,50 months, p=0,042).Conclusion:our data suggest that AH and DYS may be associated with higher frequency of adverse events but a better drug retention. The combination of bDMARD and ACEi/ARB may determine a better control of the inflammatory process by inhibition of angiotensin II, favouring the achievement of remission. In AH patients on bDMARDs, ACEi and ARB could therefore represent an useful anti-hypertensive drug choice. Similarly, statins could be the treatment of choice in DYS patients.References:[1]Gonzalez-Gay MA, et al. Clin Exp Rheumatol. 2006.[2]Pollono EN, et al. Clin Rheumatol. 2010[3]van Sijl AM, et al. Resumen
Stochastic computing (SC) reduces the complexity of computation by representing numbers with long streams of independent bits. However, increasing performance in SC comes with either an increase in area or a loss in accuracy. Processing in memory (PIM) computes data in-place while having high memory density and supporting bit-parallel operations with low energy consumption. In this article, we propose COSMO, an architecture for co mputing with s tochastic numbers in me mo ry, which enables SC in memory. The proposed architecture is general and can be used for a wide range of applications. It is a highly dense and parallel architecture that supports most SC encodings and operations in memory. It maximizes the performance and energy efficiency of SC by introducing several innovations: (i) in-memory parallel stochastic number generation, (ii) efficient implication-based logic in memory, (iii) novel memory bit line segmenting, (iv) a new memory-compatible SC addition operation, and (v) enabling flexible block allocation. To show the generality and efficiency of our stochastic architecture, we implement image processing, deep neural networks (DNNs), and hyperdimensional (HD) computing on the proposed hardware. Our evaluations show that running DNN inference on COSMO is 141× faster and 80× more energy efficient as compared to GPU.

Resumen
In order to cope with the increasing energy demand, microgrids emerged as a potential solution which allows the designer a lot of flexibility. The optimization of the controller parameters of a microgrid ensures a stable and environment friendly operation. Non-dominated Sorting Sine Cosine Algorithm (NSSCA) is a hybrid of Sine Cosine Algorithm and Non-dominated Sorting technique. This algorithm is applied to optimize the control parameters of a microgrid which incorporates both static and dynamic load. The obtained results are compared with the results of the established Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) in order to justify the proposal of the NSSCA. The average time needed to converge in NSSCA is 7.617s whereas NSGA-II requires an average of 10.660s. Moreover, the required number of iterations for NSSCA is 2 which is significantly less in comparison to the 12 iterations in NSGA-II.

Resumen
ABSTRACT The structure of cometary dust is a tracer of growth processes in the formation of planetesimals. Instrumentation on board the Rosetta mission to comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko captured dust particles and analysed them in situ. However, these deposits are a product of a collision within the instrument. We conducted laboratory experiments with cometary dust analogues, simulating the collection process by Rosetta instruments (specifically COSIMA, MIDAS). In Paper I, we reported that velocity is a key driver in determining the appearance of deposits. Here in Paper II, we use materials with different monomer sizes, and study the effect of tensile strength on the appearance of deposits. We find that mass transfer efficiency increases from ∼1 up to ∼10 per cent with increasing monomer diameter from 0.3 to 1.5 $\mu\mathrm{ m}$ (i.e. tensile strength decreasing from ∼12 to ∼3 kPa), and velocities increasing from 0.5 to 6 m s−1. Also, the relative abundance of small fragments after impact is higher for material with higher tensile strength. The degeneracy between the effects of velocity and material strength may be lifted by performing a closer study of the deposits. This experimental method makes it possible to estimate the mass transfer efficiency in the COSIMA instrument. Extrapolating these results implies that more than half of the dust collected during the Rosetta mission has not been imaged. We analysed two COSIMA targets containing deposits from single collisions. The collision that occurred closest to perihelion passage led to more small fragments on the target.

Resumen
Abstract Background: Endocrine therapy (ET) is the preferred therapy option for patients (pts) with hormone receptor-positive (HR[+]) advanced breast cancer (ABC), except for pts with visceral crisis who often receive chemotherapy to achieve rapid symptom control. Cyclin-dependent kinases 4/6 inhibitors have improved the effectiveness of ET across all subgroups of pts with ABC by targeting potential mechanisms of resistance. An exploratory analysis revealed that the addition of abemaciclib to ET conferred the largest benefit in pts with poor prognostic characteristics (liver metastases, high grade tumors, or progesterone receptor-negative status) [Di Leo, NPJ Breast Cancer 2018; 4: 41]. ABIGAIL aims to provide consistent evidence that abemaciclib plus ET is superior or non-inferior to paclitaxel in terms of early overall response as first-line regimen in HR[+], HER2-negative ABC pts with poor prognosis. Trial Design: This is a multicenter, randomized, open-label, phase 2 trial. Eligible participants are men and women of any menopausal status aged ≥18 years with HR[+], HER2-negative ABC who had no prior systemic therapy in the advanced setting and at least one of the following aggressive disease criteria: (i) Visceral disease; (ii) High histological grade and/or progesterone receptor-negative status; (iii) Lactate dehydrogenase &gt;1.5 × the upper limit of normal; (iv) Relapse while on or within 36 months of completing adjuvant ET. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1, measurable disease as per RECIST 1.1, and adequate organ function are also required. A total of 160 pts will be randomly assigned (1:1) to receive abemaciclib (300 mg/day orally during each 28-day cycle) plus ET as per investigator’s criteria (either letrozole [2.5 mg/day orally] or fulvestrant [500 mg intramuscularly on days 1, 15 of cycle 1, and on day 1 thereafter], or paclitaxel (90 mg/m² intravenously on days 1, 8, 15). Men and pre-/peri-menopausal women will receive a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist if randomized to abemaciclib plus ET. At investigator’s discretion, pts in the paclitaxel arm could receive abemaciclib plus ET at any point after the first 12 weeks or extend chemotherapy for a total of 6 cycles. Randomization will be stratified according to the presence of visceral disease and endocrine therapy. The primary endpoint is 12-week overall response rate (ORR) as per RECIST 1.1. Key secondary endpoints include ORR, clinical benefit rate, 12-week progression-free survival, progression-free survival, time to response, duration of response, overall survival, time to first subsequent therapy, time to second subsequent therapy, and time to first chemotherapy for pts in abemaciclib plus ET arm, patient-reported outcomes, and safety as per NCI-CTCAE 5.0. The sample size assumes the comparison of two proportions in an asymptotical normal test. We expect that 12-week ORR will be higher in the abemaciclib plus ET arm than paclitaxel arm (30% vs. 15%), with the assumption of a 5% non-inferiority margin. Based on a 10% dropout rate, a sample size of 160 pts is necessary to attain 80% power at nominal level of two-sided alpha of 0.05. We will test the superiority of abemaciclib plus ET as compared with paclitaxel if the non-inferiority is achieved. Both analyses, will be conducted with the Newcombe hybrid score method for confidence intervals. This trial was opened to accrual in May 2021. Resumen
The paper focuses on the quantitative analysis of the coupling dynamic characteristics of two non-identical exciters in a non-resonant vibrating system. The load torque of each motor consists of three items, including the torque of sine effect of phase angles, that of coupling sine effect and that of coupling cosine effect. The torque of frequency capture results from the torque of coupling cosine effect, which is equal to the product of the coupling kinetic energy, the coefficient of coupling cosine effect, and the sine of phase difference of two exciters. The motions of the system excited by two exciters in the same direction make phase difference close to π and that in opposite directions makes phase difference close to 0. Numerical results show that synchronous operation is stable when the dimensionless relative moments of inertia of two exciters are greater than zero and four times of their product is greater than the square of their coefficient of coupling cosine effect. The stability of the synchronous operation is only dependent on the structural parameters of the system, such as the mass ratios of two exciters to the vibrating system, and the ratio of the distance between an exciter and the centroid of the system to the equivalent radius of the system about its centroid.

Resumen
In hybrid block-based video coding, transform plays an important role in energy compaction. Transform coding converts residual data in the spatial domain into frequency domain data, thereby concentrating energy in a lower frequency band. In VVC (versatile video coding), the primary transform is performed using DCT-II (discrete cosine transform type 2), DST-VII (discrete sine transform type 7), and DCT-VIII (discrete cosine transform type 8). Considering that DCT-II, DST-VII, and DCT-VIII are all linear transforms, inverse transform is proposed to reduce the number of computations by using the linearity of transform. When the proposed inverse transform using linearity is applied to the VVC encoder and decoder, run-time savings can be achieved without decreasing the coding performance relative to the VVC decoder. It is shown that, under VVC common-test conditions (CTC), average decoding time savings values of 4% and 10% are achieved for all intra (AI) and random access (RA) configurations, respectively.

COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer (CORDIC) is an effective method that is used in digital signal processing applications for computing various trigonometric, hyperbolic, linear, and transcendental functions. This paper presents the theoretical basis and practical implementation of circular (sine-cosine) CORDIC-based generator. Synthesis results of this generator based on Altera Stratix III FPGA (EP3SL340F1517C2) using Quartus II version 9.0 show that the proposed hybrid FPGA architecture significantly reduces latency (42% reduction) with a small area overhead, compared to the conventional version. The proposed algorithm has been simulated for sine and cosine function evaluation, and it has been verified that the accuracy is comparable with conventional algorithm.

Resumen
BackgroundInterstitial lung disease (ILD) is the leading cause of death in systemic sclerosis (SSc). European consensus guidelines consider that some patients with mild disease might not need pharmacological treatment (1). Up to now, the disease characteristics and the disease course of non-treated SSc-ILD patients remain unknown.ObjectivesTo describe disease characteristics and the disease course of non-treated SSc patients with ILD.MethodsWe included patients from our local EUSTAR center registered since 2008, who had a diagnosis of ILD on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and available data on pulmonary function tests and treatment. Longitudinal study included patients with at least one follow-up visit. Patients were classified as treated if they received a potential ILD modifying drug (immunosuppressive therapy or nintedanib). Treated and untreated patients were compared at baseline. Progression in the untreated group was defined as (i) forced vital capacity (FVC) decline from baseline of ≥10% or (ii) an FVC decline of 5-9% in association with a decline in diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) of ≥15%, or (iii) start of a ILD modifying treatment during follow-up. In the untreated group, patients who progressed at any time were compared with patients with stable disease during follow-up. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify (i) factors associated with non-prescription of a treatment in ILD patients at baseline and (ii) factors associated with progression in the untreated patients. Covariates were selected according to clinical experience and literature evidence.ResultsAmong 496 patients included in our cohort, 209 (42%) patients had ILD on baseline HRCT: 48/209 (23%) were males, median disease duration 8 [IQR: 4-12] years, 67/209 (32%) of diffuse cutaneous subset and 86/209 (41%) had anti-Scl70 antibodies.Among them, 142/209 (68%) did not receive any potentially ILD modifying treatments at baseline. Untreated patients were older (59 vs. 54 years), had a longer disease duration, were less frequently smokers, had more frequently anticentromere antibodies and lower levels of CRP. They had more frequently a limited extent (<20%) of lung fibrosis on HRCT, higher FVC (97.02 (±19.76) % vs. 78.29 (±19.23) %) and DLCO (72.10 (±18.97) % vs. 57.57 (±20.81) %), better performances in the 6 minute walking test and were less frequently treated with low dose of glucocorticoids. In multivariable logistic regression, older age (OR: 1.04 [1.01-1.08], p=0.021), a less extensive disease on HRCT (OR: 0.29 [0.09-0.90], p=0.037) and less frequent prescription of glucocorticoids (OR: 0.036 [0.12-0.92], p=0.037) were independently associated with absence of ILD modifying treatment prescription in our cohort. From the 142 untreated patients, 96 were followed-up for 64 [39-96] months. Of these, 56 (58%) patients showed progression of ILD, of whom 43 progressed by lung function parameters. Of these 56 patients, 31 (56%) progressed in the first 18 months. Diffuse cutaneous subtype (OR: 5.26 [1.26-27.62], p=0.031), shorter disease duration (OR: 0.95 [0.90-0.99], p=0.035) and oesophageal symptoms (reflux, dysphagia) (OR: 3.51 [1.12-12.18], p=0.036) at baseline were independent predictors of progression during follow-up in untreated patients.ConclusionA considerable number of SSc patients with ILD are not treated in clinical practice, in particular patients with limited cutaneous SSc, older age and an overall less extensive ILD. However, during a follow-up of 5 years, contrary to the common belief, about 60% of the untreated patients showed ILD-progression. The diffuse cutaneous subtype, shorter disease duration and oesophageal symptoms at baseline characterized these patients. With the development of effective and safe therapies for SSc-ILD, our results support a change in practice for selecting patients for treatment.References[1]Hoffmann-Vold A-M, et al. This paper presents stable, radix-2, completely recursive discrete cosine transform algorithms DCT-I and DCT-III solely based on DCT-I, DCT-II, DCT-III, and DCT-IV having sparse and orthogonal factors. Error bounds for computing the completely recursive DCT-I, DCT-II, DCT-III, and DCT-IV algorithms having sparse and orthogonal factors are addressed. Signal flow graphs are demonstrated based on the completely recursive DCT-I, DCT-II, DCT-III, and DCT-IV algorithms having orthogonal factors. Finally image compression results are presented based on the recursive 2D DCT-II and DCT-IV algorithms for image size 512 by 512 pixels with transfer block sizes 8 by 8, 16 by 16, and 32 by 32 with 93.75% absence of coefficients in each transfer block.

Resumen
Abstract The objective of this study is to examine the differences and similarities in the annual trends of the urban surface energy balance (SEB) among long-term field measurements. Four datasets analyzed for the study were collected in the following experiments or observational sites: Comprehensive Outdoor Scale Model experiments (COSMO), the Kugahara site in Tokyo, Japan (Ku04), and the Sperrstrasse and Spalenring sites in Basel, Switzerland (BuU1 and BuU2). A new variable, the forcing radiation QFR, has been proposed to replace the conventional net radiation Q* for the normalization of the SEB components. Here, QFR is defined as the sum of net shortwave radiation and downward longwave radiation. Because QFR does not include the upward longwave radiation, it is independent of the surface temperature, which is determined by the energy partitioning process. Therefore, QFR is independent of the energy partitioning process itself. With the use of QFR, the characteristics of the daytime normalized components of the SEB equation (i.e., upward longwave radiation, QL↑/QFR, turbulence fluxes (QH + QE)/QFR, and heat storage ΔQS/QFR) were investigated. The above energy fluxes normalized by the forcing radiation depended on the friction velocity u*. An increase of u* predominantly enhanced (QH + QE)/QFR and reduced both QL↑/QFR and ΔQS/QFR. When this u* dependency on the SEB was taken into consideration, the annual variations of these three flux ratios from cities located in similar latitudes and longitudes (i.e., BuU1 and BuU2, Ku04, and COSMO) were very similar. At BuU1 and BuU2, QL↑/QFR showed larger seasonal amplitudes than at COSMO and Ku04. The seasonal variations of (QH + QE)/QFR were roughly out of phase with respect to those of QL↑/QFR, resulting in relatively small seasonal variations of ΔQS/QFR. Furthermore, the effects of urban canyon geometry on the SEB were examined by comparing the SEB for the roofs to that for the canyon. The three-dimensional urban canyon geometry enhanced the heat storage efficiency relative to the forcing radiation ΔQS/QFR of the canyon in comparison with that of roofs or flat surfaces. This observation was explained by the continuous movement of sunlit areas on the walls and streets.

Resumen
AbstractWhen the classical Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) system is rotated about its vertical axis roughly three regimes can be identified. In regime I (weak rotation) the large-scale circulation (LSC) is the dominant feature of the flow. In regime II (moderate rotation) the LSC is replaced by vertically aligned vortices. Regime III (strong rotation) is characterized by suppression of the vertical velocity fluctuations. Using results from experiments and direct numerical simulations of RB convection for a cell with a diameter-to-height aspect ratio equal to one at $\mathit{Ra}\ensuremath{\sim} 1{0}^{8} \text{{\ndash}} 1{0}^{9} $ ($\mathit{Pr}= 4\text{{\ndash}} 6$) and $0\lesssim 1/ \mathit{Ro}\lesssim 25$ we identified the characteristics of the azimuthal temperature profiles at the sidewall in the different regimes. In regime I the azimuthal wall temperature profile shows a cosine shape and a vertical temperature gradient due to plumes that travel with the LSC close to the sidewall. In regimes II and III this cosine profile disappears, but the vertical wall temperature gradient is still observed. It turns out that the vertical wall temperature gradient in regimes II and III has a different origin than that observed in regime I. It is caused by boundary layer dynamics characteristic for rotating flows, which drives a secondary flow that transports hot fluid up the sidewall in the lower part of the container and cold fluid downwards along the sidewall in the top part.

Resumen
Nickel(II) complexes of mono-functionalized pyridine-tetraazamacrocycles (PyMACs) are a new class of catalysts that possess promising activity similar to biological peroxidases. Experimental studies with ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), substrate) and H2O2 (oxidant) proposed that hydrogen-bonding and proton-transfer reactions facilitated by their pendant arm were responsible for their catalytic activity. In this work, density functional theory calculations were performed to unravel the influence of pendant arm functionalization on the catalytic performance of Ni(II)–PyMACs. Generated frontier orbitals suggested that Ni(II)–PyMACs activate H2O2 by satisfying two requirements: (1) the deprotonation of H2O2 to form the highly nucleophilic HOO−, and (2) the generation of low-spin, singlet state Ni(II)–PyMACs to allow the binding of HOO−. COSMO solvation-based energies revealed that the O–O Ni(II)–hydroperoxo bond, regardless of pendant arm type, ruptures favorably via heterolysis to produce high-spin (S = 1) [(L)Ni3+–O·]2+ and HO−. Aqueous solvation was found crucial in the stabilization of charged species, thereby favoring the heterolytic process over homolytic. The redox reaction of [(L)Ni3+–O·]2+ with ABTS obeyed a 1:2 stoichiometric ratio, followed by proton transfer to produce the final intermediate. The regeneration of Ni(II)–PyMACs at the final step involved the liberation of HO−, which was highly favorable when protons were readily available or when the pKa of the pendant arm was low.

Resumen
Abstract Real-time mimicking of human facial movement on a 3D head model is a challenge which has attracted attention of many researchers. In this research work we propose a new method for enhancing the capturing of the shape of lips. We present an automatic lip movement tracking method which employs a cosine function to interpolate between extracted lip features in order to make the detection more accurate. In order to test the proposed method, mimicking lip movements of a speaker on a 3D head model is studied. Microsoft Kinect II is used in order to capture videos and both RGB and depth information are used to locate the mouth of a speaker followed by fitting a cosine function in order to track the changes of the features extracted from the lips.

Resumen
The conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) has been implemented in the Amsterdam density functional program. The surface building routines now allow for finer discretization of the GEPOL-based surfaces, and an additional surface due to Delley has been incorporated. One problem identified is the need for accurate density fitting in the region of the surface points. Another difficulty is the need to explicitly state for which atoms the hydrogen-bonding term applies. We present some vapour–liquid equilibrium curves of binary solvent systems to demonstrate the utility of the method.

Resumen
We study the spectrum, the massless S matrices and the ground-state energy of the flows between successive minimal models of conformal field theory, and within the sine-Gordon model with imaginary coefficient of the cosine term (related to the minimal models by “truncation”). For the minimal models, we find exact S matrices which describe the scattering of massless kinks, and show using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz that the resulting non-perturbative c function (defined by the Casimir energy on a cylinder) flows appropriately between the two theories, as conjectured earlier. For the nonunitary sine-Gordon model, we find unusual behavior. For the range of couplings we can study analytically, the natural S matrix deduced from the minimal one by “undoing” the quantum-group truncation does not reproduce the proper c function with the TBA. It does, however, describe the correct properties of the model in a magnetic field.

Resumen
Abstract We propose to realize type-II Weyl points in a one-dimensional Aubry–Andre–Harper model with cosine modulation in both hopping and on-site terms, which together form a synthetic three-dimensional parameter space. By constructing a one-dimensional acoustic lattice comprising multiple coupled cavities with two adjustable structural parameters, we implement the acoustical analogue of the type-II Weyl semimetal. Good agreement is observed between the theoretical predictions and numerical simulations, with both displaying the tilted dispersion and Fermi arc. Our study enables the exploration of high-dimensional topological physics by constructing a low-dimensional physical system and may open up possibilities for the design of novel acoustic devices.

Resumen
Abstract. A new snow melting parametrization is presented for the non-hydrostatic limited-area COSMO ("consortium for small-scale modelling") model. In contrast to the standard cloud microphysics of the COSMO model, which instantaneously transfers the meltwater from the snow to the rain category, the new scheme explicitly considers the liquid water fraction of the melting snowflakes. These semi-melted hydrometeors have characteristics (e.g., shape and fall speed) that differ from those of dry snow and rain droplets. Where possible, theoretical considerations and results from vertical wind tunnel laboratory experiments of melting snowflakes are used as the basis for characterising the melting snow as a function of its liquid water fraction. These characteristics include the capacitance, the ventilation coefficient, and the terminal fall speed. For the bulk parametrization, a critical diameter is introduced. It is assumed that particles smaller than this diameter, which increases during the melting process, have completely melted, i.e., they are converted to the rain category. The values of the bulk integrals are calculated with a finite difference method and approximately represented by polynomial functions, which allows an efficient implementation of the parametrization. Two case studies of (wet) snowfall in Germany are presented to illustrate the potential of the new snow melting parametrization. It is shown that the new scheme (i) produces wet snow instead of rain in some regions with surface temperatures slightly above the freezing point, (ii) simulates realistic atmospheric melting layers with a gradual transition from dry snow to melting snow to rain, and (iii) leads to a slower snow melting process. In the future, it will be important to thoroughly validate the scheme, also with radar data and to further explore its potential for improved surface precipitation forecasts for various meteorological conditions.

Resumen
Theodor Adorno thought Parsifal unique, in many respects incongruous when compared with Wagner's earlier operas and music dramas. In a 1956 essay, ‘Zur Partitur des Parsifal’ (‘Concerning the Score of Parsifal’), he noted the ‘continually strange newness’ of Wagner's last work, concluding: ‘From out of the waning of his original inventive powers, Wagner's force produces the virtue of a late style; a style that, according to Goethe's dictum, withdraws from appearance’. More recently, Werner Breig paused appreciatively over Adorno's remark about the ‘continually strange newness’, but pursued a different argument. Breig claims that Parsifal was recapitulatory, stylistically homogeneous with the earlier works, and he is supported by Wagner's assertion to Cosima that he had written ‘nothing new’ since Tristan (CWD II, 26 March 1879), a conviction redolent of one the composer had earlier expressed (albeit in entirely different circumstances) in a letter to Mathilde Wesendonck of 2 May 1860: ‘I can now only repeat myself … I have no other significant characteristics to offer’. Breig summarises his position in the Wagner Handbook: ‘The musical structure of Parsifal contains no fundamentally new elements, but rather follows directly upon the achievements of the Ring and Tristan’, thus nodding to the Wagner who cheerfully confessed having ‘take[n] up the old paint pot’ of the Tristan style for Act II of Parsifal (CWD II, 5 April 1878).

Resumen
The aim of this work was to develop a simple and easy-to-apply model to predict the pH values of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) over a wide range of pH values that can be used in daily work. For this purpose, the pH values of 38 different DESs were measured (ranging from 0.36 to 9.31) and mathematically interpreted. To develop mathematical models, DESs were first numerically described using σ profiles generated with the COSMOtherm software. After the DESs’ description, the following models were used: (i) multiple linear regression (MLR), (ii) piecewise linear regression (PLR), and (iii) artificial neural networks (ANNs) to link the experimental values with the descriptors. Both PLR and ANN were found to be applicable to predict the pH values of DESs with a very high goodness of fit (R2independent validation > 0.8600). Due to the good mathematical correlation of the experimental and predicted values, the σ profile generated with COSMOtherm could be used as a DES molecular descriptor for the prediction of their pH values.

Resumen
Saliency region detection plays an important role in computer vision applications and related areas, such as human fixation, figure-ground separation, face detection, and image compression. Nevertheless, state-of-the-art methods can moderately detect the saliency regions of a psychological pattern dataset. Therefore, this paper proposes a spatial-frequency redistribution (SFR) method to improve the efficiency of the detection of the saliency regions. The proposed SFR method consists of two main procedures: (i) adaptive cosine image construction-and-implantation and (ii) saliency region detection using complete multiple-object-implanted images. The former procedure constructs an adaptive cosine image by using a cosine function based on an object structure and then individually implants it into each object detectable. This stage provides the first significant property, spatial redistribution, to the object implanted. The adaptive cosine image redistributes the objects for controllability. Then, the latter procedure transforms a complete multiple object-implanted image into the frequency domain. At this point, the second significant property, frequency redistribution, provides the simple technique for identifying and separating the target object from the unwanted objects and background. In this paper, these properties are referred to as spatial-frequency redistribution. This method was realized as a computer program, and then such program was tested with a psychological pattern dataset and a Thai text dataset. The experimental results, when compared with state-of-the-art methods, show that the proposed SFR method can achieve the clear detection of the attention region in the psychological pattern dataset. Moreover, the proposed method can achieve a F-value of 80.28% with a recall and precision of 76.32% and 85.23%, respectively, for Thai text localisation in the Thai text dataset.

Resumen
Abstract In Part I of this two-part paper a new method of predicting the total lightning flash rate in thunderstorms was introduced. In this paper, the implementation of this method into the convection-permitting Consortium for Small Scale Modeling (COSMO) model is presented. The new approach is based on a simple theoretical model that consists of a dipole charge structure, which is maintained by a generator current and discharged by lightning and, to a small extent, by a leakage current. This approach yields a set of four predictor variables, which are not amenable to direct observations and consequently need to be parameterized (Part I). Using an algorithm that identifies thunderstorm cells and their properties, this approach is applied to determine the flash frequency of every thunderstorm cell in the model domain. With this information, the number of flashes that are accumulated by each cell and during the interval between the activation of the lightning scheme can be calculated. These flashes are then randomly distributed in time and beneath each cell. The output contains the longitude, the latitude, and the time of occurrence of each simulated discharge. Simulations of real-world scenarios are presented, which are compared to measurements with the lightning detection network, LINET. These comparisons are done on the cloud scale as well as in a mesoscale region composing southern Germany (two cases each). The flash rates of individual cumulonimbus clouds at the extreme ends of the intensity spectrum are realistically simulated. The simulated overall lightning activity over southern Germany is dominated by spatiotemporal displacements of the modeled convective clouds, although the scheme generally reproduces realistic patterns such as coherent lightning swaths.

We studied the action potential of Primo-vessels in rats to determine the electrophysiological characteristics of these structures. We introduced a mathematical analysis method, a normalized Fourier transform that displays the sine and cosine components separately, to compare the action potentials of Primo-vessels with those for the smooth muscle. We found that Primo-vessels generated two types of action potential pulses that differed from those of smooth muscle: (1) Type I pulse had rapid depolarizing and repolarizing phases, and (2) Type II pulse had a rapid depolarizing phase and a gradually slowing repolarizing phase.

Resumen
Abstract. Vector electric fields and associated E×B drifts measured by a sounding rocket in the auroral zone during the NASA JOULE II experiment in January 2007, are compared with coherent scatter spectra measured by a 30 MHz radar imager in a common volume. Radar imaging permits precise collocation of the spectra with the background electric field. The Doppler shifts and spectral widths appear to be governed by the cosine and sine of the convection flow angle, respectively, and also proportional to the presumptive ion acoustic speed. The neutral wind also contributes to the Doppler shifts. These findings are consistent with those from the JOULE I experiment and also with recent numerical simulations of Farley Buneman waves and instabilities carried out by Oppenheim et al. (2008). Simple linear analysis of the waves offers some insights into the spectral moments. A formula relating the spectral width to the flow angle, ion acoustic speed, and other ionospheric parameters is derived.

Resumen
In this paper, design and implementation of SOPC (System on Programmable Chip) based Asynchronous pipelined Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is considered. For designing Asynchronous Pipelined DCT, a new approach is proposed. In this approach, Nios II embedded processor is used to control the asynchronous data flow. For implementation of Asynchronous pipelined DCT, Winograd algorithm with 6 stages (Combinational Logic Blocks) of operations is used. The intermittent data between stages are latched by using multiplexer based latches. The completion of each and every stage is informed to the Nios II processor using interrupts. In turn, Nios II processor generates various control signals to pass the intermittent data stored in the multiplexer based latches. In the proposed system, storage of intermittent data is done with multiplexer based latches instead of registers. This leads to minimum power consumption. The system is useful in water marking the patient details on to the patient records to transmit through Internet. The work has been carried out as a part of embedded remote patient monitoring system, in which the measured medical parameters and images of the patients are to be sent to the remote doctor through wired or wireless medium, along with the patient details. The system is implemented in EP1S25F780C5 Altera Stratix FPGA with Nios II embedded processor. Importantly, Nios II processor is also used to validate the DCT & IDCT results by comparing the results with a known set of test vectors.
