Resumen
In contrast to Tolstoy’s fiction, his epistolary has not been studied enough. This article deals with Lev Tolstoy’s correspondence with one of his permanent correspondents – a notable literary critic, philosopher and journalist Nikolai Strakhov. An exchange of letters between them, which lasted a quarter of a century, throws new light on many aspects of Tolstoy’s intellectual and creative activity.

Resumen
The present paper reports on the English type nouns kind of and sort of and their Lithuanian correspondences in a contrastive perspective. This paper aims to describe the quantitative and qualitative distribution of the English kind of andsort of, to determine their translational correspondences in Lithuanian as well as to reveal how Lithuanian correspondences correlate with the functions (textual and interpersonal) that kind of and sort of perform in original and translated fiction texts. The research method is a quantitative and qualitative contrastive analysis based on data extracted from the self-compiled bidirectional corpus ParaCorpEN→LT→EN comprising fiction texts. The results show that kind of and sort of are prone to be used NP-internally; however, even in this construction they can feature as DMs. Kind of and sort of function as unambiguous DMs when they completely lose their nominality, i.e. are used NP-externally. The functional and semantic potential of the type nouns is fully reflected by their TCs. Very rarelykind of and sort of denoting a type are translated congruently into a Lithuanian type noun; they usually correspond to demonstrative pronouns. As discourse markers, kind of and sort of are realised by different Lithuanian correspondences which may help establish the common ground between the speaker and the hearer or refer to the previous context, may indicate epistemic imprecision, approximation or downtone a proposition. The high number of zero correspondence shows that the Lithuanian type nouns have not advanced on the grammaticalization path the way the English type nouns have and due to the multifunctionalilty, non-propositionality and context-dependence there is no one-to-one correspondence of the markers under scrutiny.

Resumen
As a result of studying the topic, we came to the following conclusions. Letters of writers are of great importance for the history of Armenian literature and culture. The issues raised in them, even if private, but of concern to the public, convey to the reader the state of mind and mood of the author. In terms of their composition and questions addressed to the reader, the letters have mainly the nature of a dialogue. Some large-scale letters can be considered the building blocks of fiction or documentary-fiction. The style of the collection of letters, representing elements of public speaking, has significant linguistic and expressive manifestations (contrast of personal pronouns I-you, abundance of adverbs, phraseologisms, etc.). Our general conclusion is that some experts consider part of the letters to be documentary literature. However, we must note that the letters are twofold in their structure. They have layers of both dialogue and monologue. In letters, there is usually no effort, no labor, no gestures. Thus, different types of letters, despite their generality, have structural and linguistic differences.

Resumen
Learning to read is inseparable from teaching to read. The foundational assumption of the common core state standards initiative (CCSSI) master plan in the English language arts is that its method for teaching reading will eventuate in students' learning to read (as well as speak and write) better. Teachers and students come at their shared task from different perspectives, but both are presumed to be working in the same project of engaging something unproblematically called “language,” the program's middle name (as it is of the MLA). The Common Core's framers assume a correspondence between the phenomenon they call language in their methodological recommendations and language as it is used by them and their students—and everyone else who speaks English—in the world outside the classroom. The standards are based on a theory of language.

Resumen

V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko is considered to be one of the first professional military correspondents in Russia. He was called «the Russian Dumas» and «the king of war correspondents». He took part as a war correspondent in the military operations in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, and the First Balkan War of 1912-1913. Numerous works of fiction, essay prose, memoirs and war correspondence belong to his pen. The authors focus on the journalistic activity of V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko during Russia’s war against Turkey, the result of which is the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke, a reflection of the dramatic and sometimes tragic realities of the fighting. The article reveals how V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, by his example, created the image of an objective and faithful writer to the ideals of the Fatherland and laid the foundations and methodology of military journalism.

Resumen
Over her career, Elizabeth Bowen published ten novels, yet she left no comprehensive theory of the novel. This essay draws especially upon ‘Notes on Writing a Novel’ (1945), ‘The Technique of the Novel’ (1953), and ‘Truth and Fiction’ (1956), as well as opinions that Bowen expressed in her weekly book columns for The Tatler, to formulate her key perceptions of, and rules for, writing a novel. Bowen defined her ideas by drawing upon the empirical evidence of novels by Elizabeth Taylor, Olivia Manning, H.E. Bates, Jane Austen, Gustave Flaubert, and numerous others. She gave particular thought to ‘situation’, by which she means the central problematic or the crux of the story. The situation precedes and fuels plot. The Second World War, Bowen claimed in her essays and reviews, had a decisive influence on heroism and contemporary fiction by heightening its scale and its repertory of situations.

Resumen
Perhaps, a work of fiction’s truth is the unfaltering manner in which its details guide the spectator, reader or listener to the coherent whole of the work, and never disappoint their experience, or at least never for long. This view requires us to hold back the inclination to think of truth as short for the correspondence of some representation to something beyond itself, which is the normal way to view truth in real life, in journalism and in science. A work that is true to itself may be said to generate a particularist type of universal knowledge, like Aristotle characterised poetry at the expense of history in his Poetics.

Resumen
To find out how the ‘generic person’ is expressed in English and Swedish, the use and correspondence of the generic pronouns one in English and man in Swedish are examined in a bidirectional English-Swedish translation corpus. The material demonstrates clearly the greater frequency and versatility of Swedish man and the restricted use of English one. The difference is partly register-related: while man is stylistically neutral one is relatively formal and often replaced by you or various other pronouns. However, the most striking difference is syntactic. The English correspondences of man cut across grammatical systems and can be seen to reflect two diverging tendencies: the English fiction texts often have a subject corresponding to Swedish man, but the non-fiction texts rely to a large extent on syntactic shifts and clause reductions without a corresponding subject. In other words, the difference between the languages is not just a matter of pronoun choice but of syntactic preferences and subject selection.

Resumen
Contemporaneous publications of missionary letters often include material written for publicity purposes. These can be letters written by the missionaries themselves, or even fictional letters composed for the purpose and presented as genuine. By analyzing one such fiction and the genuine letter on which it is based, this article identifies criteria for distinguishing actual correspondence from its imitation. The example is drawn from a minor incident in New Zealand in 1840 involving the meeting of a Catholic missionary with a Methodist missionary, both of whom subsequently wrote about the encounter.

Resumen
In this creative project, I combine non fiction prose and poetry in an organic way. Prose is framed in the form of letters that I wrote for real people telling them about my life experiences in Iowa City, and some reflections about past events that I came up with while living here. Poems are the result of a more refined way of expressing how I felt about the subjects on the letters. Love, rejection, and my struggle with writing are some of the trending topics the reader will find in this work.

Despite the fact that the internationalization is not a new concept for the Higher Education, it is from the last twenty years that its impact has provoking discussions concerning the role which the university assumes, nowadays, in the international economy and the consequences of thinking and taking internationalization as a goal of the educational system. However, many researchers has demonstrating some concern when the academic capitalism starts to induce and to direct the internationalization projects in accordance with the market interests, instead of considering the report and the experience of those who are the most affected with its impact, the international students. I ask myself how can we approach the theme ‘Internationalization of Higher Education’ considering the international students’ reports. Considering this context and from my own unrests as an international student, I have defined as the focus of this study the way how it is constituted/constructed the meaning of being a Brazilian doctoral student in Barcelona, bringing, thus, as the research question: ‘Why is it important and necessary to think about pedagogies or practices which consider its international context?’. From a narrative perspective of investigation, I have proposed myself, in this thesis, to know; in order to, then, comprehend; what do the nine Brazilian students say about their experiences as students in the University of Barcelona. In a first moment, by interviewing them, my goal was to know each one’s history, in order to, later, comprehend what did such reports were saying about the experience of being a student in Barcelona. Beyond the interviews, the subjects shared images and songs which, according to their reports, were also representing their experiences. As a narrative strategy of investigation, this thesis is organized through seven letters. Beyond of serving as a fictional resource, the letters are spaces of dialogue and interlocution where the researcher relates to other personas: the letters’ addressees, the examiner of the doctoral thesis, some friends, Meeri Hellstén, those who collaborated with the research, the next international students and the thesis director; bringing, thus, some facts and happenings which are important for the discussion of this thesis’ issue and promoting a singular time-space for the construction of the subjectivity of the research collaborators.

Resumen
This study investigates how the semi-modal need to is translated into German/Swedish and which German/Swedish correspondences are translated into need to. To this end, the Linnaeus University English–German–Swedish Corpus (LEGS) is used. Nida’s (1964: 159-162) concept of formal and dynamic equivalence is used to perform the qualitative analysis and to discuss the results from the quantitative part of the study. The use of semi-modals such as be going to, have to and want to have increased during the second half of the 20th century (Leech et al.: 2009: 99). need to represents the obligation as being in the best interest of the subject and is associated with objectivity (Kastrone 2008: 829; Aijmer 2017: 28) Thus, need to is used to distance the speaker to avoid an authoritarian stance. This trend is a sign of an ongoing democratization (Leech et al. 2009: 270). The results showed that the preferred German translation is müssen (‘must’) (55%) and the preferred Swedish translation is behöva (‘need’) (47%). ‘Other’ is the second preferred German translation and the third preferred Swedish translation. These results are reflected in the structures translated from German and Swedish. The results indicate that the semantic category of the co-occurring main verb and the co-occurring subject affect translation. Based on these results, it could be said that English, followed by Swedish, is leading the process of democratization. However, further studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Resumen
Correspondences: Creative practice as a disturbance in the field of the possible, investigates the role of creative artistic practice in our engagement with the real. The creative and theoretical research in this project explores the role that Art plays as a truth procedure and offers a speculative account for the production of the new within a situation. The key questions addressed in this research project are how the creative arts change and mutate and the role they play in the generation of innovation. It offers a reconsideration of the practice of art making as an affirmative agent in the dynamic transformation of the sensible world.

BRAUNOVÁ, L.: František Kožík's biographical novels about Zdenka Braunerová compared to the extant correspondence /Master Degree Thesis/ Prague 2014, Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Education, Departement of the Czech Literature. This Master Degree Thesis compares Kožík's novels Na křídle větrného mlýna and Neklidné babí léto with the extant correspondence, which is used in different ways in both novels. The starting point was extensive research, which provided a precise undertanding of the author's intentions. The goal was to find out how the author forms the characters and their relationship using sources, especially the correspondence. At the same time this thesis delineates the difference between facts and fiction with an example of Kožík's novels.

The thesis titled Neruda's love in novels is dealing with the so- called second life of Jan Neruda and his appearance in the biographical novels. The first part try to describe how (according his letters and poems) probably looked his emotional life and what character had his relations to Anna Holinová, Karolína Světlá, Terezie Marie Macháčková, Anna Tichá a Božena Vlachová. The second part examines how is their concept in the fictional world of four novels (Černý Honzík, Démantová spona, Blonďatá Kerolajn, Lásky Jana Nerudy). They were read and confronted with correspondence and biography of Jan Neruda and it was investigated, where and how authors draw their inspiration. The next question is how they represent main hero and the bond between them. Each novel has been analyzed and mutually they were compared. The author found that all writers in varying degrees familiar with Neruda leaves and leaves are also used in their books as a source of information and words in the dialogues. Parts of them they also publish. Démantová spona and Lásky Jana Nerudy are most based on the letters. Ivo Pelant and Jaromíra Kolárová also come from many other sources. View at the figure of Anna Holinová the most changed - she was unsympathetic in the Černý Honzík and worked best in the Lásky Jana Nerudy. Novels devote most...

Mitchell, Euan Wallace. "Making noises: contextualising the politics of Rorty’s neopragmatism to assess its sustainability". Thesis, 2005. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/1462/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This creative thesis is written in two parts: Volume 1 is a novel and Volume 2 is the accompanying exegesis which explains the process of contextualising a school of philosophy’s politics within the novel. These volumes combine to build a new window onto contemporary theoretical debate regarding the sustainability of so-called liberal democracy. Volume 1, the novel, provides a fictionalised account of federal government involvement with the popular music industry in Australia during the 1990s. The story is told from the point of view of a newcomer to a music industry organisation funded by the federal government called the ‘Oz Rock Foundation’. This organisation is run by a former federal politician who maintains close links with his political colleagues still in government. When the newcomer discovers a young Aboriginal prisoner with exceptional musical talents, the former politician seizes this opportunity to help launch the Oz Rock Foundation in the ‘Year of the Indigenous Person’. This venture, however, has unexpected consequences which emerge as the story develops. Volume 2, the exegesis, employs a narrative framework to explain the process by which an analysis of philosopher Richard Rorty’s version of neopragmatism fed into the creation of the novel. Political issues raised by neopragmatism are thematically linked to fictional contexts informed by the history of government experimentation with the Australian music industry. The process is guided by questions designed to assess whether a neopragmatic version of liberal democracy is sustainable in this form. The novel is further shaped by its attempt to extend a particular tradition, within the genre of the political novel, that contextualises themes related to ‘natural rights’ as the foundation of liberal democracy. The exegesis, in its discussion of issues raised by the completed novel, then draws on existing research into the sustainability of democracy in order to synthesise an overall perspective. NOTE: Due to copyright arrangements with the publisher of Making Noises, the text of the novel (Volume 1) is not available as part of the digital version of this thesis. The novel was published in November 2006 by OverDog Press (Melbourne, Australia). The ISBN is: 9780975797921

Resumen
AbstractIn this chapter Taylor-Pirie examines how parasitologists invoked myths of British nationhood in their professional self-fashioning to frame themselves as knights of science fighting on behalf of Imperial Britain. Analysing scientific lectures, political speeches, letter correspondence, obituaries, medical biographies, and journalistic essays, she draws attention to the prominence of Arthurian legend and Greco-Roman mythology in conceptualisations of parasitology, arguing that such literary-linguistic practices sought to reimagine the relationship between medicine and empire by adapting historical and poetic models of chivalry. In this way, individual researchers were lionised as national heroes and their research framed as labour that could command the longevity of legendary stories like those recounted in Homeric poems and medieval romance. In acclimatisation debates, the tropics were frequently conceptualised in relation to the Greek Underworld, a suite of references that together with dragon slaying and the quest narrative helped to position parasitology as a type of ‘crusading fiction’ in the context of the Victorian medieval revival.

Resumen
Thomas Mann described the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun (1859-1952) as ‘a descendant of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Friedrich Nietzsche’ in a festschrift compiled for Hamsun’s 70th birthday, featuring articles by Heinrich Mann, Musil, Schoenberg, Hesse, Gorky, Masaryk and Gide. However, Hamsun’s reputation subsequently declined so much that on his eightieth birthday he received tributes only from Goebbels, Alfred Rosenberg and Hitler. Although Hamsun won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920, his controversial political views overshadowed his literary reputation, and the influence of Nietzsche on his later work has received more attention than that of Dostoevsky. Examination of his novels and correspondence, however, reveals the considerable importance of Dostoevsky in Hamsun’s literary development. Hamsun felt that contemporary fiction was only concerned with psychology as a serviceable element within a specific plot. He contrasted this with the unpredictability of Dostoevsky’s characters, which he saw as true to his own experience of subsisting through menial jobs, and planned to make the basis of his own writings. Despite visiting Russia and the Caucasus, Hamsun never mastered Russian, and read Dostoevsky only in translations. This essay examines those works available to Norwegian readers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and the evidence in Hamsun’s novels and plays of their impact on his creative life. While overviewing the reception of Russian literature in both Sweden and Norway in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, I focus on three of Hamsun’s novels, Sult (Hunger: 1890), Mysterier (Mysteries; 1892) and Pan (1894), analysing the influence of Dostoevsky on Hamsun’s portrayal of poverty, hunger and their effects on his protagonists’ behaviour, and on his treatment of religious and existential themes. I also note the reciprocal process by which Hamsun’s works were translated into Russian, achieved considerable popularity, and had a strong influence on Gorky.

Resumen
AbstractIn this chapter Taylor-Pirie illuminates how the microbiological imagination made its mark on anxious imperial fictions by close reading H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds (1898) and John Masefield’s Multitude and Solitude (1909) alongside parasitologists’ characterisations of parasite-vector-host relationships. The anthropocentric semantics of war, violence, and criminality characterised tropical illness as another form of colonial insurrection, bolstering the biopolitical power of medicine as an extension of the disciplinary law-and-order state. She interrogates the collision of the ‘medicine as war’ metaphor with a medicalised concept of ‘the Other’ to think through biomedical and national identity—as well as the discomforting agency of non-human vectors—in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), H. P. Lovecraft and Hazel Heald’s ‘Wingéd Death’ (1934), and the poetry and correspondence of parasitologists. Taylor-Pirie examines how vengeful insects, alien invasions, microbial villains, and the supernatural gave shape to the anxiety that Britain’s geopolitical relationships were immersing the imperial capital in a global marketplace of pathogens. By excavating the medical and political contexts of popular cultural forms like the vampire, she historicises lexes of contagion and parasitism that persist in contemporary political discourse surrounding immigration.

Resumen
Chapter, 2, “Race, Politics, and the Double Mind: Flannery’s Correspondence versus O’Connor’s Fiction,” provides necessary background for the origins of O’Connor’s ideas about race. It focuses on concepts of race O’Connor inherited, challenges to those ideas she may have encountered going to graduate school in Iowa and living in New York, and O’Connor’s response to the events of the Civil Rights movement. This chapter includes discussion of O’Connor’s correspondence, especially the letters exchanged between O’Connor and Maryat Lee and between O’Connor and Elizabeth Hester (both published and unpublished) and considers the light they shed on O’Connor’s attitudes. In assessing the inconsistency evident in O’Connor’s discussion of race in the letters and in the stories, the chapter includes discussion of speech act theory, particularly Barbara Herrnstein Smith’s differentiation between “natural” and “fictive” discourse. These considerations serve as foundation for an analysis of O’Connor’s treatment of race in some of her early stories, including “The Geranium” (reprise), “The Barber,” “Wildcat,” and “The Coat.”

Resumen
The article discusses the results of a psycholinguistic experiment that is part of a broader study of iconicity in fictional languages. The research is carried out in accordance with the ideas of St Petersburg School of Phonosemantics, founded by S. V. Voronin, which asserts the presence, in many cases, of both universal and specific non-conventional correspondence between the sound form and the semantics of linguistic units. Iconic words of fictional languages, selected in the course of phonosemantic analysis, were presented to the participants in their sound form. The subjects had to choose the most appropriate meaning for the sound complexes from the contrasting meanings offered in the questionnaire. These constituted designations of size, shape, sound, etc, which are characteristic of i conic language signs. The respondents were native speakers of Russian and English. The survey was conducted remotely. The analysis of the data obtained shows that the respondents react to the word-stimuli in accordance with their universal iconic properties, and the speakers of both non-closely related languages demonstrate similar reactions. In 17 out of 20 cases, they were able to choose the meaning originally conceived by the author of the fictional language. The respondents’ correct choices embrace both the designations of acoustic events and the sound-symbolic names of physiological processes and non-acoustic properties of the signified. Thus, the hypothesis about the non-random selection of sound forms for the transmission of meanings by authors of fictional languages is confirmed, and this, apparently, is determined by the universal iconic properties of linguistic systems.
