Resumen

An entrepreneur is an innovator, someone who transforms innovations and ideas intoeconomically viable entities; independent on whether in the process she creates oroperates a firm (Baumol 1993). When these firms are created however, sometimes theydo not achieve a viable sustainability; they often face problems and are forced to gobankrupt. When Bankruptcy occurs the entrepreneur is logically affected not onlyeconomically but also mentally and emotionally. Different situations have differenteffects on the entrepreneur´s emotions.

Lazarus´ Cognitive Appraisal Theory states that when faced with a problem or situationpeople "appraise" or perceive it in different ways. The Primary Appraisal happens whenthe entrepreneur first comes into the realization of the problem; she can view itdifferently, either as an event that deserves indifference, an opportunity, or as a harmfulthreat. The Secondary Appraisal happens when the entrepreneur analyses what resourceshe has available and what strategy he will proceed to use in order to tackle the situation.Furthermore, during the course of the situation the entrepreneur may come into therealization of new information that might change his way of perceiving things, this iscalled an Appraisal. The Cognitive Appraisal Theory is closely linked to the CopingTheory which talks about how entrepreneurs "cope" or deal emotionally with theiradversities. Coping can be divided into two types, Problem focused and Emotion focusedCoping. Problem focused coping intents on coming up with viable and practical solutionsto improve the situation, whereas Emotion focused intends on externalizing the blame andreacting with a worsened emotional state that does not help the situation in the long run.

This report is an exploratory research and bases its empirical data on the case studyapproach of five different cases of entrepreneurs leaving in Sweden who had theexperience of engaging in an enterprise that ended up in bankruptcy. During the course ofthis investigation a qualitative method was used and the empirical findings wheregathered by engaging in interviews that were later analyzed and correlated with thetheoretical framework.

In the Analysis we take apart the information gathered in the interviews and try tocorrelate the events to the theories while at the same time striving to find similarities ordifferences between the subjects. We also try to find patterns that may help us understandmore about the subject and finally allows us to address the problem and achieve thepurpose of this report which is to understand how an entrepreneur copes when faced witha business failure.

In our conclusion we came to the realization that people tend to follow specific patterns ofemotional reaction that concretely support the pre established theories. This report servesas a base or foundation of a tool for entrepreneurs. We find that if entrepreneurs hadprevious knowledge of ways to deal with failure they might be more prompt to avoid itentirely and consequently this can be an invaluable tool for them..3

Guion, David. "Childhood Maltreatment, Coping, and Coping Self-Efficacy among Offenders". VCU Scholars Compass, 2011. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/2602.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study explored the relationship between childhood interpersonal trauma and coping self-efficacy, coping styles, and emotion regulation difficulties among male and female offenders in detention and diversion centers (N = 183). The coping-relapse model of recidivism posits that offenders’ coping ability plays a pivotal role in successful reentry (Zamble & Quinsey, 1997). Past research reveals that childhood maltreatment is associated with avoidant coping and emotion regulation difficulties, which could negatively impact reentry (e.g., Cloitre et al., 2009; Min, Farkas, Minnes, & Singer, 2007). The relationship between childhood maltreatment and coping self-efficacy has not been addressed. This study found that childhood interpersonal trauma was significantly related to emotion regulation difficulties (r = .20), but not coping self-efficacy, active coping, or avoidant coping. Coping self-efficacy was significantly related to emotion regulation difficulties (r = -.61), active coping (r = .60), and avoidant coping (r = -.30). Research and practice implications are discussed.

Resumen
There is an extensive literature exploring the effects of trauma, and the variables which moderate reactions following a stressful experience. Emotional responses can vary in response to numerous factors, and one area receiving increasing attention is that of coping. It has been acknowledged that there is an important relationship between how individuals cope and their psychological wellbeing following a trauma. Highly stressful experiences can impact on coping styles, and at times this can lead to maladaptive coping, exacerbating the original symptoms and potentially invoking additional difficulties. Existing coping styles also appear to impact on how individuals cope with events, possibly predicting future symptomatology. It is known that some populations, for example combat veterans, the homeless and refugees, experience a higher than average exposure to trauma, but less is known about they cope with these experiences. On the basis of this, this study aimed to investigate trauma and coping styles in street and hostel homeless adults, and additionally explore the relationship between coping and trauma symptomatology on the basis of existing research findings. It found that the street homeless reported more approach coping skills than those living in hostels, and this group also displayed higher levels of trauma symptomatology. Furthermore, it was shown that there is an association between avoidant coping and trauma, complex trauma and PTSD, supporting existing literature. Due to the cross-sectional design, causal associations could not be drawn, but the research gives suggestions for future research and potentially beneficial psychotherapeutic interventions for those who have experienced trauma, including homeless populations. 3.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to describe and understand the meaning of responses of study participants to interactive computer-mediated communication within a distance learning environment. The theoretical framework for this study was based on collaborative learning theories within a constructivist perspective. The study setting was a distance learning graduate course taught in a studio classroom on Ball State University campus and transmitted via the IHETS Network to five distant sites in Indiana. An interactive Internet site, the Class Page, was an important instructional component of the course. This Class Page was developed to enable and support active, collaborative learning among distance learners.Study participants, all graduate students enrolled in degree programs, included 13 studio students and 24 off site students. One professor and two graduate assistants delivered course and Web site instruction. In this descriptive study, responses of participants were collected through a series of surveys and interviews over the sixteen week semester. Evidence collection focused on learner responses to the computer component of this distance learning setting.Identified in this study were cognitive and affective learning strategies developed and employed by students to effectively learn from the educational environment of computer-mediated communication within this study's setting. Two cognitive learning strategies identified were the `management of the computer environment' and the `management of personal resources.' Two affective learning strategies identified were the `management of self and the `management of others.' The computer medium of this setting played an important role in determining how students responded to, and learned within, this distance learning environment.Learners' responses to this multimedia distance setting were shaped by specific aspects of the learning environment. The development of the cognitive and affective learning strategies was influenced by the instructional design of the distance course and the Class Page, the structure of Class Page interactivity, and the characteristics of individual learners. Conclusions and recommendations of this study focused on these four influences upon student responses. Implications for future distance education design and development included the need for a clear model of distance learner participation and further research requirements in areas such as learner characteristics, applications of interactive media, and course design issues.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to elicit information about the process of coping employed by battered women during a hypothetical abusive incident. The research question addressed in this study was: How do appraisal of an event, the use of coping resources, and coping strategies vary across three phases of a single stressful incident?Four variables were examined as group tendencies to react and changes over three phases of a hypothetical abusive incident. These variables were: 1) reported emotions, 2) extent to which the participants felt they could alter the situations (perceived control), 3) use of social support and 4) ways of coping at each stage. In addition, individual differences in coping as a function of emotions experienced, feelings of control and use of social support were also examined. The participants in this study were 54 females who had been admitted to a shelter for battered women. An experimental, repeated measures design was employed and data was analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance and linear, stepwise regression analysis. All hypotheses were tested at alpha = .05.The results of this study showed that emotions, perceptions of control and coping strategies significantly changed across the three phases of the abusive incident. There were significant main effects found for emotions, perceptions of control and types of social support used, regardless of the phase of the incident. In addition individual differences in coping as a function of cognitive appraisal variables were also found. This study shows that a stressful encounter i s a dynamic, unfolding process and riot a static unitary event. As the abusive incident proceeded from the anticipation stage to the outcome stage, there were concomitant changes in emotions, appraisals of control over the situation and coping strategies used. This study also showed that people cope in complex ways and that problem-focused coping was combined with emotion-focused coping at each stage of the encounter.

Resumen
The present study, based on Lazarus' cognitive theory, identified coping strategies utilized by psychiatric nurses, and examined correlations between social support, perceived threat and coping effectiveness. The correlational design utilized a convenience sample of registered nurses holding membership in the Indiana State Nurses' Association Council on Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice. Subjects completed a demographic sheet, Interpersonal Support Evaluation List, Jalowiec Coping Scale, McNett Coping Effectiveness Questionnaire, and a one-item threat evaluation scale. Problem-focused coping was preferred by the sample. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between social support and coping effectiveness, a significant negative correlation between threat and coping effectiveness, and a non-significant negative correlation between social support and threat. Conclusions were psychiatric nurses utilize problem-focused coping strategies, there was a significant relationship betweeen social support and coping effectiveness, and threat and coping effectiveness, and a nonsignificant relationship between social support and threat.

Literature Review: A systematic review was conducted that evaluated the impact of religious coping on levels of depression among adults. The findings of the review supported a dichotomous view of the impact of religious coping on depression, and suggested that individuals who make use of positive religious coping methods experience significantly different levels of depression than those who use negative religious coping methods. Future research is needed to examine long-term effects of using positive and negative religious coping, to better understand how religious coping is used in non-Christian communities around the world. Research Project: The current study investigated religious coping and depressive symptoms in the context of the Ismaili Muslim religious community in Nairobi, Kenya. Six participants were interviewed using semi-structured interviews and the data was analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Four super-ordinate themes and twelve sub-ordinate themes emerged from the interviews. Overall, the findings indicated that religion appears to have both positive and negative influences on depressive symptoms, a finding that is generally supported by the wider literature on religious coping. Clinical implications for practice, limitations and areas for future research are discussed in relation to these findings. Service Evaluation: The current study examined professional development within the context of the Community Counselling Services (CCS), local, community-based institution which provides voluntary counselling services for the Ismaili Muslim community. In the current study, counsellors’ perspectives of the professional development trainings and the extent that these trainings improve their therapeutic practice and skills were explored. The findings indicated that while the counsellors experienced a broader scope of knowledge and positive client outcomes and service delivery, the trainings were often too theoretically-orientated and lacked sufficient practical components. These findings, together with recommendations for improvement are reported with consideration of the existing literature.

Resumen
This study investigated the relationship between coping style and academic satisfaction, as well as the role each plays in overall life satisfaction. Further, this study examined the potential utility of coping style within Lent and Brown’s (2006) social cognitive career theory (SCCT) model of work satisfaction. A sample of students in a university setting took a measure to assess coping style, academic satisfaction, life satisfaction, self-efficacy, and goal progress. Results indicated that both problem-focused and avoidance coping styles predicted academic satisfaction individually. Only for problem-focused coping was this relation strong enough for academic satisfaction to partially mediate the direct effect on life satisfaction. Coping styles did not explain variance above and beyond the SCCT variables of goal progress and self-efficacy. This study supports the existing model of work satisfaction in SCCT, and offers preliminary evidence for full mediation of coping styles’ effects on satisfaction by stress and goal progress.

Nikander, Linnea y Ralitsa Zoteva.

Background: To be suffering from a cancer disease can lead to fear and insecurity but also to the life changes that the patient may need to adjust to. The ability to adapt often occurs in patients with a cancer disease through the coping strategies religion and spirituality. These coping strategies can help patients to cope with the situation and therefore find comfort and support. Aim: Was to describe religion and spirituality as coping strategies in patients with a cancer disease.  Method: This literature review is based on ten healthcare scientific articles published between the years 2007-2013. The articles can be found in the databases CINAHL Plus with Full Text and MEDLINE with full text. The articles have been processed and analysed. Results: The result is presented using three main themes; God and spirituality, Positive and negative religious coping and Religious and spiritual support. All these main themes include subthemes. God and spirituality meant that many patients relied to God and their spirituality and that God could be described and viewed in different ways. Positive and negative religious coping was used more by women while men used more of a negative religious coping. Religious and spiritual support appeared to be something that was not addressed by health care providers despite the fact that almost all patients wanted some type of spiritual care. Discussions: Nursing theorist Katie Eriksson believes that all human beings are somehow spiritual or religious and that the healthcare needs to give more attention in order to reduce suffering. The use of religion and spirituality as a coping strategy has become a tool for patients to cope with their cancer disease. The eventual existential questions according to many patients and Katie Eriksson could only be answered through religion and spirituality.

Drummond, Suzanne. "Being Proactive About Proactive Coping: Exploring Future-Oriented Coping and Appraisal within a Transactional Framework". Thesis, Griffith University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365724.

Texto completo
Resumen
Future-oriented coping is broadly defined as actions undertaken prior to the occurrence of stress to minimise potential risks or enhance the opportunity for growth. Two specific forms of future-oriented coping that have received the most attention are proactive and preventive coping. Proactive coping refers to efforts undertaken to achieve goals and improve chances of beneficial outcomes, while preventive coping focuses on efforts undertaken to avoid or minimise potential risks and threats (Schwarzer, 2000). Future-oriented coping is important to investigate given its ability to improve well-being by actively dealing with potentially stressful events prior to their occurrence. The increased attention to positive psychology has seen the future-oriented coping literature grow over the past 15 years. Within this expanding literature, two notable gaps were identified: (1) limited research has explored future-oriented coping in its own right within the context of a sound theoretical stress and coping model, and (2) the dimensionality and distinctness of future-oriented coping (as measured with the dispositional future-oriented coping inventory), has been questioned due to inconsistent results. The current research directly addressed these issues by assessing the dimensionality and distinctness of the future-oriented coping measure, as well as utilising the transactional model of stress and coping (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) as a framework to understand the antecedents and outcomes of future-oriented coping.

Krakow, Nathan. "Assessing crime victims' coping needs". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29994.

Texto completo
Resumen
There is mounting evidence that psychological reactions to criminal victimization can be far more severe, much longerlasting, and recovery less complete than had been originally thought. The plight of crime victims is often compounded by a suspectibility to a 1 'second wound', or aggravation of their distress, arising from the neglect or mistreatment by those whom victims rely on for support. There is, at the same time, evidence that both the criminal justice system and the mental health profession have often been ill-equipped to adequately tend to the needs of this population. Despite a growing research interest in victimization (e.g., social psychology, counselling psychology, psychiatry, criminology), there is a lack of integration of victimization-related research both across and within these disciplines. As a result, those counselling crime victims and their families find insufficient guidance in the literature for intervening with this population. In the aftermath of their misfortune, victims need to regain what was abruptly taken from them (i.e., a sense of safety, trust, agency, self-esteem, intimacy, a sense of the world as meaningful). To facilitate post-trauma counselling, an assessment of crime victims' coping needs is presented in the context of an interventive framework. The framework distinguishes victims' identified needs according to (1) victims' intermediate vs. long-term coping needs, (2) what victims need from others vs. what they can do for themselves, and (3) what victims need from whom. These distinctions serve to operationalize crime victims' adjustment processes. Furthermore, these distinctions require an integration of an otherwise diverse victimization literature.

Resumen
In Comparison to other psychological topics, research into humour is relatively limited, despite humour being a ubiquitous phenomenon and an important coping tool. The few studies that have been performed have mainly adopted the approach of quantifying humour using psychometric measures. The inconsistent findings of these studies prompted the starting point of this thesis, which replicates a study testing the stress moderating effects of humour according to various psychometric measures. This replication, which produced nonsignificant results, raised important questions on the effectiveness of this methodology and initiated a shift from a positivist to a constructivist paradigm, which subsequently shaped the focus of the thesis. The thesis presents a study of people's use of humour as a means of coping with stress and difficulty, using reversal theory as a conceptual framework. The intention was to generate a deeper and more coherent understanding of the processes underlying coping humour and to work towards developing a theory of coping humour based on experiential evidence. The method of approach was an empirical, qualitative investigation and analysis within a constructivist paradigm. The main data presented are interviews in which the discussion of coping humour experiences was encouraged. A repeated content analysis, guided by the principles of grounded theory, was essential in uncovering layers of meaning in the phenomenological data. This led to an interpretative account of coping humour, expressed in the form of a model. The model of coping humour contains six dynamically interacting elements, which offer a criterion for coping humour to work effectively. The model's constituent elements expand existing theories of humour by giving them greater depth and coherence. Furthermore, the model can operate as an interpretative framework, accommodating the unique variation of each episode of coping humour. The main contribution of this thesis is to provide a model of coping humour that offers a working theory substantiated by experiential evidence that is both generative and evolving. A further contribution is to highlight weaknesses within current measures of humour, and to offer suggestions for improvement based on the more realistic and meaningful portrayal of humour that has been generated.

Per Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, existentialism is the profound truth that the world lacks inherent meaning and thus, we are radically free to choose, to live life as we please. While these assertions are both true and liberating and the theoretical level, these axioms leave individuals disoriented. They never answer the question: how does one live within an absurd world? Thus, these authors never give us a way of coping with the harsh repercussions of absurdity. To answer this question, this project turns to intersubjectivity and the work of Emmanuel Levinas. Levinas’s theory of the other demonstrates that we are not merely beings in a vacuum; the world is conditioned by the interpersonal. Relating to the Other allows us to see that we are not alone in our suffering, for the Other and the individual mutually witness one another. Such connections provide a means of coping with absurdity, allowing us both solidarity and insight into the truly absurd nature of the world. Thus, the application of Levinas’s intersubjectivity to existentialism serves to save Camus’s notion of absurdity from its more nihilistic tendencies, allowing us to accept and apprehend absurdity without falling into despair or ignorance

Resumen
This is the first study to investigate and compare two distinct Professions’ (i.e. Psychologists and Psychiatrists) experiences of working with suicidal patients. This study utilises a mixed methods design with strong emphasis on qualitative methods. It comprises a Survey Questionnaire completed by 88 professionals; and Semi-structured Interviews with 6 Psychologists and 6 Psychiatrists analysed according to Interpretative Phenomenological Analyses (IPA) guidelines. Despite some differences in Professions’ training and practice characteristics, qualitative findings provide support for a shared experience amongst professionals. Three main themes were identified: (i) Emotional Challenges arising as a consequence of the work; (ii) the Stigma that permeates the phenomenon, leading to isolation and clinicians’ questioning of self-concepts; and (iii) ways to Survive the Experience and maintain clear thinking within practice. It is suggested that clinicians who struggle during the work with suicidality experience similar feelings to suicidal clients. Following patients’ completed suicides, clinicians seem to go through a more intense experience. Using psychoanalytic literature, this phenomenon was understood as a Post-parallel Process to their clients, which is marked by the disintegration of clinicians’ self-representations. It is proposed that, when the experience is uncontained, clinicians may act out their feelings in a similar manner to their clients. However, in the presence of Containment clinicians may go through a Redemption Process and use their tragic and painful experience as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Although such model seems to account for the differing suicide rates found amongst Professions further research is needed to test its proposition.

Resumen
Unique stressors can prompt child adjustment difficulties. Coping strategies and emotion regulation that impact the adjustment of children in general and military family children were investigated. Eighty children, 36 with deployed parents, their parents and teachers participated. All experienced stress related to hurricane Katrina. Correlational analyses indicate that children with more hurricane-related losses or moves, use some coping strategies less often; hurricane-related child distress is related to lower maternal support; and parental hurricane-related distress is associated with high levels of child externalizing problems. When dealing with general stressors, some coping strategies were positively associated with child internalizing problems. Analyses indicate that children with high emotion regulation and use of certain coping strategies experienced less externalizing problems, and children with deployed parents were not more emotionally dysregulated or maladjusted than children with non-deployed parents. Analyses did not confirm the hypothesized roles of parental support. Gender differences are also discussed.

Resumen

Although numerous studies have identified the buffering effects of different coping strategies in stress and health research, few studies have considered the influence of cultural factors such as allocentrism (degree of collectivism). The present study examined whether the collectivistic coping strategies of support (support from racially similar others, support from experienced others, support from family) and avoidance (forbearance, fatalism) were associated with perceived and physiological stress levels, and whether allocentrism influenced this relationship, among a sample of low-income mothers. Results showed that higher use of support from family and lower use of avoidance coping were associated with lower levels of perceived stress and lower morning cortisol. Among women high in allocentrism, those who used support from experienced others had lower levels of perceived stress. These results contribute to our understanding of the role of culture in stress-coping research and how culture influences our physiological stress reactions.

Deeming, Jack y Jack Deeming. "Religious Coping in Traumatic Bereavement". Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/624954.

Resumen
Traumatic bereavement as the result of homicide, suicide, or accident has been shown to be a risk factor for Complicated Grief (CG). Religious belief is often cited as a source of comfort during times of loss. This study examined whether traumatically bereaved individuals were more likely to engage in positive or negative religious coping, and whether religious coping style was associated with the severity of grief symptoms. To assess these questions, 42 traumatically and non-traumatically bereaved individuals completed the ICG and the RCOPE. It was found that the traumatically bereaved were significantly more likely to utilize positive religious coping strategies than negative religious coping strategies. However, when either group utilized negative religious coping strategies, this was strongly correlated with higher measures of grief severity.
