ABSTRACT Previously unattributed items by Elizabeth Palmer Peabody appear in the Boston Observer, Christian Register, and Western Messenger in 1835. One side of Peabody revealed in these articles is of the experimental educator who not only was embroiled in the drama over Bronson Alcott’s teaching at the Temple School but apparently had stirred up a small controversy of her own the year prior to the publication of Conversations with Children on the Gospels (1836–37). There might be nothing quite remarkable about these transcripts except for the fact that, in one of her dialogues with her students, Peabody tells a graphically violent story about infanticide among Cuba’s enslaved population, comments that she later attempts to defend. Another side of Peabody that these writings reveal is the portrait of a young religious author inspired to write her own devotional literature. This takes the form of an early correspondence with William Ellery Channing. And there is even another side to Peabody represented in these writings. It is that of a moral instructor imparting her wisdom on the formation of moral character. Taken together, these publications are a significant addition to our knowledge of Peabody at a critical time in the transcendentalist period of her life.

Resumen
The late Middle Ages witnessed a recapitulation of medieval reflection on beauty. Jean Gerson is an important representative of these philosophical and theological contributions, although he has been largely neglected up to this time. A first dimension of his ideas on beauty is the incorporation of beauty (pulchrum) into the number of transcendentals, i.e., the concepts “convertible” with the notion of being (ens), that is, unity, truth, and goodness (unum, verum and bonum). This article revisits Monica Calma’s study on Gerson’s theory of beauty and suggests new hypothetical sources that may have inspired this aspect of his thought. The second aspect emphasised here is Gerson’s classification of beauty, which entails some similarities to the one of Ulrich of Strasbourg, but also differs from it. Moreover, its incorporation of a division entirely devoted to artistic beauty is highly remarkable.

AbstractThis essay-review asks what transcendentalism can contribute to our sense of the present moment and our capacity to imagine more just and livable futures. In doing so, it suggests an alternative to the view that transcendentalism embraces escapism and isolating individualism. I focus on Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, presuming that the present value of an idea of transcendentalism is to be discovered in their writings or nowhere. The two are centrally concerned with describing the conditions under which experience is acquired; their writing, then, evinces a wish to get closer to the world, not to escape it. What they do seek to transcend is not the world but our illusions about it, particularly those that feed egotism. The irony of calling Emerson in particular an escapist is that his writing makes escape so difficult to achieve. The process of reading Emerson—of finding a sentence suddenly captivating, just where it had been hopelessly dull—models and perhaps prompts a process of similar discovery about the mundane world. I conclude by linking transcendentalism to ideas of critical humility and naïveté suggested by Stanley Cavell, Toril Moi, Jane Bennett, and Theodor Adorno. Some form of naïveté, I speculate, might help us confront our inability to change in the midst of anthropogenic climate change and mass extinction.

Danny Luzon, “The Language of Transcendentalism: Mysticism, Gender, and the Body in Julia Ward Howe’s The Hermaphrodite” (pp. 263–290) This essay studies the idea of a “third” sex adapted by Julia Ward Howe and other American transcendentalists from the language and theology of European mysticism. It explores Howe’s design of a nonbinary gender category through her dialogue with the figure of the hermaphrodite in the mystic tradition. Specifically, I look at Howe’s unfinished “Laurence manuscript” (written throughout the 1840s and first published in 2004 under the title The Hermaphrodite), tracing how it gives shape to unique intersex modes of knowledge and expression. The novel’s intersex protagonist, who repeatedly claims “I am no man, no woman, nothing,” allows Howe to productively utilize a language of negation and multiplicity, making the apophatic quality of mystic speech, as well as her protagonist’s denial of intelligibility, into a means of spiritual transcendence. In doing so, Howe marks gender categories as dwelling beyond social expression, away from phallocentric discursive constraints and their production of fixed dualistic concepts. Her mystic phenomenology elucidates the indeterminacy of gender, revealing it as something that cannot be adequately conceptualized in language. Howe’s prose thus produces complex dynamics between the spirit and the flesh, in order to free both the self and the body from the sociolinguistic restrictions of social intelligibility.

ABSTRACT: Cheryl Misak has offered a pragmatic argument against a position she calls “scientific transcendentalism.” Scientific transcendentalists hold that truth is something different from what would be believed at the end of inquiry; more specifically, they adhere to a correspondence theory of truth. Misak thinks scientific transcendentalists thereby undermine the connection between truth and inquiry, for (a) pragmatically speaking, it adds nothing to truth and inquiry to ask whether what would be the results of sufficiently rigorous inquiry are really true and (b) they can only accept it as an article of faith that inquiry leads us to truth. I defend “scientific transcendentalism” against Misak’s objections.

The aim of this study is to show the essence of transcendentalism in the context of the "Divine Light" which is assessed through figurative language style (metaphors and symbols). The scope of research is the study of literature, such as essays, and style; from the point of Transcendentalism philosophy. The theory used is the science of literature -the concepts of figurative language. The point of view is philosophy of transcendentalism and Sufism. Stages in Sufism are Shari'a, congregations, nature, and ma'rifat. The results showed that Emerson’s essays called transcendentalism contains teachings as "Secular Sufism", focusing on human control efforts. In this case, Emerson Transcendentalism does not require any religious means, therefore he was called “Secular Sufism”; whereas the teachings of Sufism emphasizes the teachings of religion. Conclusion of the study is the benefit of achieving the "Light Divine," that is, a mental reform that produces "true happiness" and forms a "whole person."

The expression “linguistic Kantianism” is widely used to refer to ideas about thought and cognition being determined by language — a conception characteristic of 20th century analytic philosophy. In this article, I conduct a comparative analysis of Kant’s philosophy and views falling under the umbrella expression “linguistic Kantianism.” First, I show that “linguistic Kantianism” usually presupposes a relativistic conception that is alien to Kant’s philosophy (although Kant’s philosophy itself may be perceived as relativistic from a certain point of view). Second, I analyse Kant’s treatment of linguistic determinism and the place of his ideas in the 18th century intellectual milieu and provide an overview of relevant contemporary literature. Third, I show that authentic Kantianism and “linguistic Kantianism” belong to two different types of transcendentalism, to which I respectively refer as the “transcendentalism of the subject” and the “transcendentalism of the medium.” The transcendentalism of the subject assigns a central role to the faculties of the cognising subject (according to Kant, cognition is not the conforming of a subject’s intuitions and understanding to objects, but rather the application of a subject’s cognitive faculties to them). The transcendentalism of the medium assigns the role of an “active” element neither to the external world nor to the faculties of the cognising subject, but to something in between — language, in the case of “linguistic Kantianism.” I conclude that the expression “linguistic Kantianism” can be misleading when it comes to the origins of this theory. It would be more appropriate to refer to this theory by the expression “linguistic transcendentalism,” thus avoiding an incorrect reference to Kant.

Resumen
Distribution theory, which is widely applied to describe the features and properties of observations, and plays an important role in the development of statistics. However, some distributions have complicated or implicit forms of mathematical expressions, which is not able to solve practical problems in a transparent way. This thesis aims to make some contributions to distribution theory. Specifically, this thesis presents some exact distributions in a closed form, which is able to provide more accurate results and improve the computational efficiency in practice. The main contributions are listed in Chapters 2-7. Student's t distribution is one of the most famous distributions which was discovered by William Gosset in 1908. Chapter 2 gives a review of the Student's t (ST) distribution and its generalizations. This chapter is consisted of the collection of nearly 30 generalizations of the ST distribution. Also, the comparisons among some of ST generalizations are performed for fitting with stock index data in applications. The Behrens-Fisher problem is a famous problem in statistics regarding hypothesis testing and interval estimation. Commonly, the distribution of Behrens-Fisher statistic is approximated by a Student's t random variable. Chapter 3 provides the exact distribution of a modified Behrens-Fisher statistic, which is more convenient from the computational perspective. Chapter 4 manages to derive the true maximum likelihood estimators for the generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD) with the shape parameter p = 3; 4; 5. Compared with traditional numerical algorithms, theorems in this chapter allow one to compute the maximum likelihood estimator of the location parameter mu and the scale parameter sigma accurately. Since round off errors arise in many areas of signal processing, Chapter 5 aims to extend the work of Gadzhiev (2015) to estimate the mean and variance of round off errors for any continuous random variable defined on either the real line or a finite interval. The contributions are elaborated as some theorems with higher accuracy in computing mean and variance of round off errors, with no need to consider sample size. Chapter 6 provides an exact density of the sum of independent skew normal random variables. The out-performances of our method are shown in comparison with the corresponding central processing unit (CPU) operation time with an increasing number of random variables. Besides, our method appears good performance in fitting and predicting stock price over a long period of time. Estimation of population mean based on given measurements is one of the oldest problems in statistics. Chapter 7 investigates the relative performances of arithmetic mean, root mean square, geometric mean, and harmonic mean for the simplest case of two measurements from a uniform distribution.

Resumen
In this dissertation we study closure properties of pointclasses, scales on sets of reals and the models L[T2n], which are very natural canonical inner models of ZFC. We first characterize projective-like hierarchies by their associated ordinals. This solves a conjecture of Steel and a conjecture of Kechris, Solovay, and Steel. The solution to the first conjecture allows us in particular to reprove a strong partition property result on the ordinal of a Steel pointclass and derive a new boundedness principle which could be useful in the study of the cardinal structure of L(R). We then develop new methods which produce lightface scales on certain sets of reals. The methods are inspired by Jackson’s proof of the Kechris-Martin theorem. We then generalize the Kechris-Martin Theorem to all the Π12n+1 pointclasses using Jackson’s theory of descriptions. This in turns allows us to characterize the sets of reals of a certain initial segment of the models L[T2n]. We then use this characterization and the generalization of Kechris-Martin theorem to show that the L[T2n] are unique. This generalizes previous work of Hjorth. We then characterize the L[T2n] in term of inner models theory, showing that they actually are constructible models over direct limit of mice with Woodin cardinals, a counterpart to Steel’s result that the L[T2n+1] are extender models, and finally show that the generalized contiuum hypothesis holds in these models, solving a conjecture of Woodin.

Fund managers and investors are confronted with the problem of selecting a single investment portfolio from a large number of possible combinations of available assets. In South Africa the set of possible portfolios has become even larger with the gradual relaxing of the constraints on foreign investment from 1995 to the present day, thereby expanding the investment universe for South African investors. Moreover, portfolio selection in South Africa is being transformed increasingly from being the exclusive domain of high net worth individuals, trustees and their investment managers to being the domain and responsibility of the man on the street. The Unit Trust industry started in South Africa in 1965 and gave the lower net worth individual a vehicle with which to invest in a diverse investment portfolio. This industry has proved very popular and has expanded from only 8 funds in 1980 to 338 funds and 136 billion rands under management in November 2000. Moreover the past two years, 1999 and 2000, has seen a change in the pension fund industry from defined benefit (DB) to defined contribution (DC) pension funds, transferring more of the risk and the responsibility of portfolio selection onto pension fund members. With increasing demand for fund management and investment advice by pension fund members and individual investors alike, the financial services industry in South Africa has also expanded. The consequent competition for assets of all descriptions have led, one hopes, to a more efficient market in equity, fixed income and derivative products. Thus modern portfolio theory has come a long way and will have to go further in meeting the demand to assist investors in their decision making.

In geometry we will consider n-dimensional generalizations of the Power of a Point Theorem and of Pascal's Hexagon Theorem. In generalizing the Power of a Point Theorem, we will consider collections of cones determined by the intersections of an (n-1)-sphere and a pair of hyperplanes. We will then use these constructions to produce an n-dimensional generalization of Pascal's Hexagon Theorem, a classical plane geometry result which states that "Given a hexagon inscribed in a conic section, the three pairs of continuations of opposite sides meet on a straight line." Our generalization of this theorem will consider a pair of n-simplices intersecting an (n-1)-sphere, and will conclude with the intersections of corresponding faces lying in a hyperplane. In graph theory we will explore the interaction between zero forcing and cut-sets. The color change rule which lies at the center of zero forcing says "Suppose that each of the vertices of a graph are colored either blue or white. If u is a blue vertex and v is its only white neighbor, then u can force v to change to blue." The concept of zero forcing was introduced by the AIM Minimum Rank - Special Graphs Work Group in 2007 as a way of determining bounds on the minimum rank of graphs. Later, Darren Row established results concerning the zero forcing numbers of graphs with a cut-vertex. We will extend his work by considering graphs with arbitrarily large cut-sets, and the collections of components they yield, to determine results for the zero forcing numbers of these graphs.

Resumen
The CK theory of design created by Hatchuel and Weil has raised interest and controversies both in the academic and practitioners communities. After presenting the CK theory scope and focus, and the contributions claimed by the creators of the theory, we compare it to concepts and models more commonly used in traditional design approaches. It can be noticed that important concepts are ignored by the CK theory even if some of them are integrated in the research programs of Hatchuel, Weil and Le Masson. This initial analysis demonstrates that even in its scope, the CK theory appears incomplete to engineering design and does not consider important dimensions for the validity of the research program claimed. Then, we analyze from a critical viewpoint the foundations and hypotheses of the CK theory. Some propositions for improvement are set. Nevertheless, both the ability of CK theory to effectively assist and direct a creative process and, moreover, to organize the complete design and innovation processes are questioned. Finally, we conclude about the ambitious program and results claim by the authors of the CK theory.

By the politics of education, we mean the relations of power and authority and of domination, contestation, cooperation, and accommodation that shape the functioning of the education system as an institutional field. By the societal embeddedness, we refer to the system’s interdependent relation with its broader social and institutional environment. Understanding these elements of Vietnam’s education system is of vital importance for efforts to improve education systems’ performance in Vietnam and beyond.

A relatively small number of countries have an explicit “Feminist Foreign Policy” (FFP). Those most often cited are Sweden, Canada, France, Mexico, and Spain. In theory, an FFP moves beyond gender mainstreaming in foreign development assistance to include: (1) a wider range of external actions, including defence, trade and diplomacy (2) a wider range of marginalised people, not just women. Within foreign development assistance, it implies a more coherent and systematically institutionalised approach to gender mainstreaming. In practice, those countries with an explicit FFP implement it in different ways. Canada currently focuses on development assistance, France on development assistance and formal diplomacy, Sweden more comprehensively covers the trade and defence policy arenas. Mexico and Spain are yet to produce detailed implementation plans. There is increasing academic interest in FFP, but most analyses found during the course of this rapid review focus on narrative content of policies rather than impact. Policy advocacy and advice is provided by several high-profile advocacy organisations. National government agencies in Sweden, France and Canada have produced some evaluations of their FFP, but the evidence is weak. There are many international institution evaluations of gender mainstreaming for many different sectors that are context-specific.

A theory of the vibrational spectra of glasses, based on allowance for the statistical fluctuations of the local elastic constants, is proposed. The existence is established of two characteristic energies h, and h, , dividing the spectrum into regions of qualitatively different behavior of the density of states n (h). At low frequencices w 4 w, the increase of the density of states is determined by the additive contributions of phonons and mutually noninteracting quasilocal vibrations in random soft atomic potentials in the glass. In the intermediate region w , 5 w 5 w, the quasilocal vibrations interact strongly with phonons, and this makes their contributions superadditive. For w > w, the growth of n (h) slows down. As a result, n (h) increases at first more rapidly and then more slowly than the Debye density of states. An analytical expression for n (h) is obtained in the T-matrix formalism in the region w <a,, including the region of strong scattering. A numerical calculation of n (h) is performed in the coherent-potential approximation. The theory predicts qualitatively universal behavior of n (h) in different glasses.

This study examines the use of incentive mechanisms for employees in export and investment promotion agencies intended to improve their performance. It briefly describes these organizations and presents the contributions from economic theory that are useful to understand the agency problems that arise. It proposes a framework to study the issues that need to be considered to design a sound incentive mechanism. The study concludes that such a design should be carried out carefully, analyzing all of the possible drawbacks of rewarding each measure of employee performance, and identifies the main issues that need to be resolved.

This report explores approaches to participation in humanitarian response and evidence on the contributions of community engagement in effective response and recovery efforts.It begins with a brief overview of decolonial perspectives on the Covid-19 pandemic to situate participation in the wider context and history of humanitarian and development theory and practice. This is followed by a brief summary of evidence on the role of participation in humanitarian activities andsituates the now ubiquitous concept of ‘Building Back Better’ (BBB) inthe discussion of participatory crisis response and recovery. The remaining sections of the report introduce participatory approaches that have been applied through the Covid-19 pandemic: decentralised decision-making, technological adaptations to engage local communities, and Southern-led research and participatory research methods.

This review found no sources of straightforward indicators for use in measuring diplomatic influence. The literature and evaluations found to recommend the use of tailor-made evaluations to account for “differences in diplomatic settings, diplomatic activities and policy fields”. They hinge on developing a theory of change alongside questions and evaluation criteria that are context-specific. They rely on assessing intermediate goals as a ‘proxy’ for the immeasurable long-term influence, and causal contributions (contributed to a result) rather than causal attributions (caused a result). It was also frequently mentioned that programme designers tend to design programmes to support diplomatic influence without specific and measurable objectives because influencing processes are by nature non-linear. In these cases, evaluations will be correspondingly unable to provide specific and measurable indicators of achievement.

We examine transaction-level Peruvian import data to show that firms are subject to significant costs of port-of-entry delays. At the transaction level, we observe the time it takes a shipment to clear each step in the entry process. Our theory shows conditions under which observed entry times are endogenous. As a result, total entry delays potentially lead to biased policy conclusions and non-informative efficiency rankings of countries' entry procedures. We make three empirical contributions that help unbundle sources for time costs in trade and border effects. First, we provide evidence that at least part of the total port-entry-time is endogenous. Second, we identify the effect of entry delays on imports based on exogenous necessary entry processing. Third, we provide evidence that trade costs due to entry delays are heterogeneous across firm types. New and large importersare more elastic with respect to entry delays. This information allows researchers and policymakers to interpret aggregate port of entry delay data and their costs across different types of firms.

Prior to the Taliban takeover in August 2021, the World Food Programme (WFP) Afghanistan had been working to see how its strategic outcomes in the 2018–23 Country Strategic Plan (CSP) were aligned with viable peace and development efforts nationally, and to investigate plausible pathways by which its interventions could support broader goals to contribute to the humanitarian–development–peace (triple) nexus. With the Taliban regaining control, these pathways have become less clear and difficult for WFP to make firm strategies. This Theory of Change (TOC) document looks at each of the relevant strategic outcomes from the 2018 CSP in turn (temporarily rolled over as a result of the uncertainty) and proposes theoretical ways in which the interventions can be best aligned with medium- to longer-term goals. Whilst these can no longer be simplistically labelled ‘development’ and ‘peace’, preserving national systems and institutions remains vitally important to ensure minimum humanitarian suffering. The aim of developing these TOCs is to help best align current programming and develop future programming options, as well as better generating evidence on what works. The TOCs are also intended to be a bridge to the next CSP, generating evidence to inform future strategic outcomes and helping the organisation think through realistic contributions to national systems.
