Resumen
Covering the nonviolence traditions in all the major religions as well as the contributions of religious traditions to major nonviolent practices, this book addresses theories of nonviolence, considers each religion individually, and highlights what discrete religious perspectives have in common. Covering all the major—and some of the larger minor—religions of the world, Religions and Nonviolence: The Rise of Effective Advocacy for Peace examines the rich history of how human thinking on nonviolence has developed and what each religion offers to the theory and practice of nonviolence, providing a counterpoint to the perspective that religion has largely inspired violence and intolerance. It also traces the contributions of religious traditions to secular nonviolent practices, recognizes and explains why religion has historically inspired violence, and provides additional resources for investigating the crossroads of religion and advocacy of nonviolence and peace. The author addresses the nonviolence traditions in religions such as Bahai, Buddhism, Christianity, Ethical Atheism, the First Nations of North America, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Tenrikyo, and Revitalized Paganism. Ancient religions with important contributions to nonviolence—Zoroastrianism, Taoism, and Jainism—receive attention, as do Mo Tse and other Chinese philosophers as well as Pythagoras and other classical Greek thinkers. Students of religion, history of religion, sociology, or psychology will find this book key to achieving a balanced and therefore more accurate understanding of both religion and history. General readers will gain insights into the commonalities among different religions as well as each major religion's historical and current stances on issues of violence, such as human or animal sacrifice, slavery, war, and the death penalty.

Readers are introduced to a range of theoretical and methodological approaches used to understand religion – including sociology, philosophy, psychology, and anthropology – and how they can be used to understand sport as a religious phenomenon. Topics include the formation of powerful communities among fans and the religious experience of the fan, myth, symbols and rituals and the sacrality of sport, and sport and secularization. Case studies are taken from around the world and include the Olympics (ancient and modern), football in the UK, the All Blacks and New Zealand national identity, college football in the American South, and gymnastics. [new paragraph] Ideal for classroom use, Understanding Sport as a Religious Phenomenon illuminates the nature of religion through sports phenomena and is a much-needed contribution to the field of religion and popular culture.

Resumen
This survey of research on psychology in five volumes is a part of a series undertaken by the ICSSR since 1969, which covers various disciplines under social science. Volume Two of the survey, Individual and the Social: Processes and Issues, not only summarizes research in emerging areas of social psychology but also offers innovative theorization connecting self and collective. It considers a cultural and developmental perspective on the development of sociality in an interdisciplinary context. As revealed by the cross-cultural and cultural-psychological investigations, the meanings and practices constituting culture are critical to the way the notions of self and identity are formed and connect with social aspects of life. With this in view, the contributions to this volume focus on the developments in the study of personality formation and social psychological processes. Going beyond the prevailing individual-centric view, the seven chapters comprising this volume try to capture the developments in the study of personality, socialization, media influence, family dynamics, and religion from a social-psychological perspective. It also contextualizes the process of socialization in India. It analyses how discourses like family, religion, and media contribute to the psychological development of an individual as a member of the contemporary Indian society. It also integrates the different ways in which personality and identity are understood in contemporary psychological discourse. Additionally, it analyses the interdependence between the individual and the collective. Taken together, the contributors discuss prominent studies of processes and issues pertaining to the connection between the individual and his/her socio-cultural context.

Resumen
Using examples from new religious movements ranging from the Children of God to Sahaja Yoga, the chapter takes a multi-disciplinary approach, reviewing insights from sociology, psychology, anthropology, and management theory. It focuses on charisma as the authority to lead and transform religious traditions, reviewing not only identified qualities of leaders, but also the role of followers in creating and maintaining a collective myth, as well as the importance of the situation and culture in which the relationship develops. Key concepts include legitimation strategies, charismatization, and the role of the “charismatic aristocracy.” Attention is paid to factors contributing to instability and violence, particularly related to the institutionalization of charisma known as routinization, as well as optimal conditions for “benevolent” and “diffuse” charisma.

Resumen
This chapter presents first a survey of some of the insights that have emerged from a number of theoretical approaches to psychological exploration, and situates them in their respective psychological traditions. This survey then serves as a resource for reflections on ‘what theologians need to know’ if theological work is to be grounded in a dialogue with what psychology has to offer.Key observations include: the pervasiveness of sexuality in human experience (with ‘sexuality’ understood in its widest scope); the fundamentally relational (rather than biological) nature of sexual drive and motivation; the essentially developmental nature of human sexuality; and the great variety of experience and behaviour. It is proposed that theology can benefit from the descriptive work available, even if some of the interpretative and explanatory approaches do not sit easily with classic Christian understandings.

Resumen
This edited volume represents a snapshot the current state cognitive science of religion with contributions from many well-established contributors to the field as well as a few newcomers. The first section broadly sets the historical and theoretical stage. Its three chapters introduce readers to the historical, theoretical, and methodological foundations of CSR. Next, rather than treating “religion” as a whole, the topical space is divided into religious concepts, actions, objects, and experiences. With these pieces in place, authors in the subsequent section consider how various components combine to form religious systems, and conditions under which religious systems change or fail. Several chapters offer comparisons between cognitive science of religion and neighboring efforts including psychology of religion, neuroscience of religion, and evolutionary studies of religion. The final section of the book introduces the growing scholarly attention concerning the philosophical, theological, and education implications of CSR’s findings and theories.
