With its suspenseful atmosphere, mysterious and murderous male protagonist, and magical objects, it is hardly surprising that Charles Perrault’s conte bleu ‘La Barbe bleue’ (1697) was the inspiration for numerous Gothic tales in the nineteenth century. Some of these adaptations placed Gothic devices such as the representation of the terror experienced by Bluebeard’s latest wife within the broader nineteenth-century cultural discourse on female deviance, and its relations with masculine authority and dominance. By removing from the tale Perrault’s warning against female curiosity and imprudence and focusing on the wife’s feelings of fear and terror, these adaptations amplify the intrinsic Gothicism of the Bluebeard story, thus providing the female protagonist with a psychological depth that includes, as I demonstrate in this study, a display of a variety of abnormal behaviours. In these Gothic adaptations, the terror experienced by Bluebeard’s wife serves as a springboard for the representation of psychological and nervous disorders commonly diagnosed in the nineteenth century such as hysteria, monomania, female depravity, and masochism. Showing the interculturality and intermediality of these themes, this essay analyses rewritings of Perrault’s ‘Bluebeard’ from nineteenth-century Britain, France, and the United States, including Gothic bluebooks, poems, dramas, and short stories.

Resumen
What does put Little Red Riding Hood in her basket when she arrived in Georgia? What was the name of that demonic antagonist who met Little Thumb? An overview of archival sources gives an account of characteristics of Georgian folkloric adaptations of Charles Perrault's fairy tales. The paper deals with transmissions between the categories of "oral" and "literary", and relations between translated print products and oral narratives. The comparison of literary and folkloric versions of fairy tales shows certain features that are universal and serve as a medium between the literature and oral narrative traditions.

Scholarship on states’ responses to international norms has focused on commitment, compliance, and noncompliance; paying insufficient attention to responses that fall outside these categories. Beyond simply complying with or violating a norm; states contest, resist, and respond to international norms in a range of ways. I identifyrhetorical adaptationas a central form of resistance to international norms. Rather than simply rejecting a norm or charges of norm violation, such a strategy draws on a norm’s content to resist pressures for compliance or minimize perceptions of violation. Theorizing the relationship between norms’ content and states’ resistant rhetoric, I identify four types of rhetorical adaptation: norm disregard, norm avoidance, norm interpretation, and norm signaling. To probe the plausibility of these propositions, a case study of Turkey’s post-World War II narrative of the Armenian Genocide traces a sequence of rhetorical adaptations over the past six decades. Building on the case study, I then draw out generalizable insights into the uses and effects of rhetorical adaptation. Connecting theoretical concerns in political science with the interdisciplinary fields of genocide studies and memory studies, I delineate the ways in which actors instrumentally use norms and expand understandings of the forms and effects of so-called norm takers’ agency.

Once upon a time there were rewritten fairy tales, a very dynamic product in today’s publishing world. Updated fairy tales are the most common type: many Little Red Riding Hoods or Pusses in Boots are now walking through cities, meeting wolves who drive cars or ogres running industrial empires. Though parodies may be amusing, fun is not their only function. Intercrossing the urban imaginary with the fairy-tale means putting two referential universes face to face, each one gauging the other: traditional plots, inherited from classic tales, are twisted and corrected to fit new ideologies, and meanwhile the wonderland judges reality, with its concrete, its traffic, and its capitalist logic, so that in the end, it is the city which is reborn of the fairy tale experience. But the phenomenon should be replaced within the history of the genre. Thanks to recent academic studies, we can re-contextualize the emergence of the fairy tale in the European literary stage, and we have to note that updating fairy tales is not a contemporary practice, but could indeed be a generic characteristic. Perrault, already, by the scenography of the old maid telling tales to young kids, offered his urban public falsely naive stories, inviting them to look above the illusion of fiction, in order to find the “Morale trés-sensée”, the very wise moral. Therefore, because of their intrinsically polyphonic nature, fairy tales exist less within a logic of transmission than within a logic of conversation between generations, and for that they should be considered myths of modernity

Pillars of the patrimony, rooted in the collective unconscious, the tales to which Perrault gave a written form three centuries ago have swarmed into all possible forms of expression, and found a privileged space in contemporary children's literature – at times complete, usually altered, diverted and distorted. In order to define and assess its causes, its scope and effects, this phenomenon must be approached from three successive angles. First, one must revert to the original work to question the reasons of its fortune. Then, according to the word of Umberto Eco, examine the " migration " of the characters and patterns of the tales to the sphere where they multiply, to suggest a classification of the re-issues, the adaptations and the hypertextual variations. Last, one has to pay particular attention to the school-child to whom they are directed. Indeed we postulate that tales, when distorted, are particularly suited to literary reading, and very early in the child's life, thanks to a close relationship with the original tales, allowing an identification of their source, and a comparison between primary and secondary text, on the axiological plan as well as on structural one. In short, from Perrault to the present time, from the original tale to the deviated tale, from its production to its reception, it is a question of following the course of a major literary work, of spanning all its transformations in contemporary books for the young, and studying how, in these first years of this new century, children read them

While fairy-tales now strive to emancipate their heroines from the constraints of gender and genre, the maternal remains strikingly immutable, confined by Manichean dyads and monosemic plots like Snow White by her coffin. Therefore, this thesis proposes a contemporary interpretation of the wicked stepmother’s role through the prism of her ambivalent relationship to the maternal. The resistance of this figure to subversion attempts reveals a profound anchoring of matrilineal violence within the genre: the ubiquity of this cruel mother—who poisons and imprisons—is indeed evidence of a tension-laden institution where the mother/daughter plot can only ever be tragic. The diegetic coexistence of this dyad is rendered impossible by the lack of borders between female bodies and subjects within the patriarchal canon, any existence of a Self inevitably requiring the erasure of the Other. Matrilineal relations are further complicated by the emergence of destructive dynamics within the diegesis: the stepmother wishes to ingest—and thus (re)absorb—the daughter’s body, and the latter reacts by assuming a matrophobic attitude. It is then that the biological mother reappears, functioning as the stepmother’s inverted double and implementing the splitting of maternal figures. The reflection of this other-mother unsettles and alienates the stepmother, for whom the absence of biological bond with the heroine is evidence of her utter inferiority. However, it is also through the prism of non-filiation that a subversion of the mother/daughter tragedy becomes possible, the hybridity of the stepmother allowing the creation of protean, ambivalent and inclusive alternatives to the maternal plot

This thesis aims at placing the writer Concha Alós (1922-2011) in the limelight again and at reevaluating her production. As a writer revealed under Franco’s regime, she received an important media and cultural recognition in the 60s and 70s but suffers today from an almost general indifference. The purpose of this PhD dissertation is to provide – for the first time – a comprehensive study of Concha Alós’s personal and professional path and, in a more fine-grained way, her aesthetic work. After a careful review of a large number of documents (published or not, edited, etc.) and private archives, I retrace the trajectory of a Spanish woman writer in a country shackled by dictatorship, position her amongst her contemporaries, determine the reasons for her oblivion and analyze her productions which appear under the form of narratives, newspaper articles and scenarios. The study’s aim is to update our knowledge of a committed woman, whose caustic pen, direct style and powerful themes today deserve to be rehabilitated

Resumen
For the creative writing part of my Master's Thesis, I adapted two short stories into short films. My first screenplay is a free reverie based on Mavis Gallant's "Wedding Ring", a highly blurred and elliptic story. I then chose to work on "Careful", a text by Raymond Carver. Carver's writing is very concise and detail oriented. In itself, it is already almost cinematographic. The external gestures, the outside world express the character's interiority and existential uneasiness. This kind of writing calls for a different approach to adaptation. One that is, in the case of my personal work, much closer to the original text.
My creative writing enterprise raises a certain number of questions regarding the essence of the adaptation process. How should one consider a text when adapting it? Should one stay close to the original, or choose to move away from it, at the risk of betrayal? To what extent can one impose one's own vision, voice, words upon somebody else's work? My critical essay will explore the particular position of the person adapting original texts for cinema.
I will focus more specifically on the case of French author, Eric Rohmer, who rewrote some of his own literary work for cinema Unsatisfied with the written form of his Six Contes moraux short stories, Rohmer felt the need to adapt them to the screen. In the preface to his collection of stories, published in 1974, Rohmer speaks of his relationship to literature and cinema. He thus sets the ground for a vast reflection on the different creative possibilities offered by these mediums. The critical section of my Master's thesis will explore what is at stake in this process of rewriting the Six contes moraux from the literary to the cinematographic form.

The tresor des contes by henri pourrat represents a unique collection by its size alone : its thirteen volumes, published between 1948 and 1962, contain more than a thousand tales. The rich ethnographic collection of tales assembled by henri pourrat in the livradois region over very nearly half a century, produced a huge body of work which has remained unpublished until the present time. Pourrat's life-long work provides an indispensable inside into the storytellers' repertory as well as into the localities where the oral tradition reigned. But henri pourrat, refusing the litteral transcription required by ethnologists, insists on the necessity of an adaptation of the oral sources and thereby bestows upon himself the freedom a folkstoryteller. What use will the writer make of this freedom ? the study of the pertinent patterns allows us an understanding of pourrat's conception of fidelity. The people in this universe must be reinvented through a process whose origin can only be found in the biographic material. The strategy of the thesis is to establish by an archeological reading the hidden writting of those absent and long-gone gestures bound to the collective memory as well as to the means by which the writer recreates them

This work focuses on the changeover process from printed short story to TV broadcast, based on the TV series Contos da Meia Noite [CMN], produced and broadcasted by TV Cultura a Padre Anchieta Foundation s network. Starting with the short story concept and gathering information from the series first year, the final result is 89 episodes. The goal of this series is to understand the CMN specifications used in the content analysis, specifically: the introduction text, a short story, and the final credits, in a 10 episodes sample. Included is an interview with Fernando Martins, creator of the TV series. This new changeover proposal can be considered as a TV broadcast possibility of keeping both the short narrative s authorship and the printed book style.(AU)

In the future, agriculture and environment will rely on more and more heterogeneous data collected by wireless sensor networks (WSN). These data are generally used in decision support systems (DSS). In this dissertation, we focus on adaptive context-aware systems based on WSN and DSS, dedicated to the monitoring of natural phenomena. Thus, a formalization for the design and the deployment of these kinds of systems is proposed. The considered context is established using the data from the studied phenomenon but also from the wireless sensors (e.g., their energy level). By the use of ontologies and reasoning techniques, we aim to maintain the required quality of service (QoS) level of the collected data (according to the studied phenomenon) while preserving the resources of the WSN. To illustrate our proposal, a complex use case, the study of floods in a watershed, is described. During this PhD thesis, a simulator for context-aware systems which integrates a multi-agent system (JADE) and a rule engine (Jess) has been developed. Keywords: ontologies, rule-based inferences, formalization, heterogeneous data, sensors data streams integration, WSN, limited resources, DSS, adaptive context-aware systems, QoS, agriculture, environment

This paper focuses on children’s literature in the school, particularly analysing popular issues of fairytales. Among works found in collections investigated in two municipal children’s and primary schools in the city of Porto Alegre (RS), the presence of particular series published from very brief and poorly edited texts, especially, about ‘fairytales’, as well as official collections the Ministry of Education (PNBE, PNLD, PNAIC) distributed to schools. Thus my aim was to analyse critically adaptations of texts considered as ‘children’s literature classics’ found in schools, by comparing them with ‘originals’ (or more popular versions), identifying changes and generally verifying criteria for such changes. Considering that these collections follow pedagogical paths in institutions, I make an analysis of adaptations from ten classics: The Ugly Duckling, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The Three Little Pigs, and Tom Thumb. Here we have drawn to some studies about fairytales and adaptations such as Cademartori, Ceccantini, Hutcheon, Carvalho, Shavit, among others. Analysing these adapted works, by considering both books’ graphic part and attachment or change of traditional, allow us to show that these works have limited literary potential, once they do not favour the richness of the original narratives nor sustain the readers’ reception of these stories, which shows that publication of adaptations constitutes a strategy of the publishing market for the large consumption of books that may ‘teach something’ for children. In this perspective, the investigation is useful as it challenges the concept of ‘children’s literature’ or ‘children’s books’.

Most conventional models of suprathreshold color vision1,2 specify that, for neutral adaptation conditions, short-wavelength (S) cones signal blueness and short-wavelength redness, middle-wavelength (M) cones signal greenness and yellowness, and long-wavelength (L) cones signal long-wavelength redness and yellowness. A notable exception is Ingling and Tsou’s model3, in which M cones assist S cones with the blueness signal.

Resumen
Our model of bipolar cells (BC) of the human central fovea is based on several assumptions; a specified mosaic of red and green cones (no blue cones), and at a steady state adaptation level, the output of BCs is a linear function of image contrast. Center fields of R/G and G/R BCs receive direct inputs from weighted cones, while antagonistic surround fields receive inverted inputs from either L- or C-type horizontal cells. The computer model takes into account appropriate optical aberrations and chromatic filtering due to the eye. Chromatic aberrations are modeled using separate point spread functions for the primary colors. Cone automatic gain control is a function of intensity and wavelength of the adapting light. Spectral responses for R/G and G/R BCs were determined, and once the unique yellow loci were adjusted to 570 nm, and given absorption spectra for the red- and green-sensitive cones, spectral responses were found to be dependent on only the balance between center and surround field responses. Achromatic adaptation produced uniform decreases in responses without shifting the unique yellow loci. Chromatic adaptation clearly demonstrated the Berzold-Brucke effect with the unique yellow loci shifting to shorter wavelengths with adapting wavelengths shorter than 550 nm, and shifting to longer wavelengths with longer adapting wavelengths.

Texto completo
Resumen
We offer a model of dual rod pathways that incorporate recent psychophysical, physiological, and anatomical work. Flicker sensitivity studies suggest that one rod pathway, π0, has greater absolute sensitivity but poorer high temporal frequency responses than the other pathway, π0 (Conner, 1982; Connor and MacLeod, 1977; Sharpe, Stockman, and MacLeod, in press). The dual pathways may arise from differential electrical coupling of rods and cones via gap junctions as a function of adaptation level (Yang and Wu, 1989), so that π0 signals travel through rod pathways and π0 signals travel through cone pathways (Smith, Freed, and Sterling, 1986) before being recombined at ganglion cells or beyond. So far, the importance of dual rod pathways for processing other than temporal information is unclear. Our model of dual rod pathways generalizes their role to incremental and spatial processing and makes testable predictions to challenge the model. Predictions include more conelike spatial sensitivity for π0, differential dependence of π0 and π0 increment sensitivity on spatial and temporal parameters, and different interactions of cone signals with π0 and π0 in detection and adaptation. Support for the model comes in part from kinks in increment t.v.i. curves observed in various labs at –2 to 0 log scot td (the same as for flicker data).

Texto completo
Resumen
Fast flicker is detected on mesopic backgrounds by π0′, a rod mechanism with fast temporal response and bandpass temporal contrast sensitivity. The similar temporal properties of cone and π0′ mechanisms suggest a special relationship between cone pathways and π0′-mediated signals that is not shared with the more sluggish, π0 rod signals. This is also supported by field adaptation studies where both rod and M-cone mechanisms adapt π0′ and a single rod mechanism adapts π0. How π0′ and cone flicker signals combine in cone pathways was determined by measuring test additivity. Chromatic adaptation was used simultaneously to isolate rods and either M- and L-cones. Test additivity experiments then assessed the degree of additivity between mechanisms. The degree of additivity was substantially less for π0′ with M-cones (k = 3.8) than with L-cones (k = 2.2). This is consistent with π0′ signals combining L-cone signals according to vector addition and with M-cone signals weakly or not at all for flicker detection. The differential specificity of π0′ and M-cone and L-cones for temporal processing contrasts with the nonspecificity previously reported for these mechanisms for increment detection.

Resumen
S-cone increment thresholds are strongly affected by the state of adaptation of all three cone types. Models of opponent and nonopponent mechanisms suggest that decreased lateral inhibition affecting all pathways equally could selectively elevate S-cone increment thresholds. Therefore, S-cone increment thresholds do not provide unambiguous evidence of selective S-cone-pathway damage. To evaluate S-cone function in patients in conditions in which lateral inhibition is insignificant, S-cone grating orientation acuity functions were gathered with a 500-nm 0.9-log td test field and a 590-nm 4.6-log td adapting field. S-cone acuities for twenty-five normal subjects were comparable with anatomical data on individual variations in the SWS-cone mosaic. For thirty-four normals and patients, test fields were reduced as much as 1.5-log unit; conversion to S-cone contrast indicated that S-cone resolution did not vary with S-cone adaptation state. Varying L/M-cone adaptation state (using lower adapting field luminances) also did not affect S-cone resolution. These data suggest that the high frequency limb of the S-cone-mediated contrast sensitivity function is relatively unaffected by adaptation state and provides an important complement to clinical S-cone increment thresholds.

Resumen
Chromatic detection by the L or long-wavelength cones and M or middle-wavelength cones can be conveniently represented in the diagram shown in Fig. 1. The vertical axis represents the change in the quantal catch of the M cones, produced by a test light modulation, divided by the quantal catch in the M cones produced by all of the steady field components. The horizontal axis represents the analogous quantity for the L cones. Fig. 2 shows the simple model which justifies this representation. The cone classes adapt independently of one another before being combined into the red-green chromatic and luminance mechanisms. The model requires that adaptation take place within each cone pathway, but not necessarily in the cones themselves. Adaptation also occurs at the opponent stage. The linear combinations of cone contrasts shown in the model of Fig. 2 imply that detection contours in cone contrast space should be four straight line segments (only three of which are shown in Fig. 1). Each vector in Fig. 1 represents the threshold for a particular ratio of red to green light modulations, corresponding to a particular ratio of L-to-M cone modulations. The 45° vector represents a test stimulus with the same chromaticity as the adapting field. If there is a detection mechanism which combines cone contrasts linearly and has a response which is independent of luminance modulation, it must have a detection contour which is parallel to the 45° line - that is, it must have a slope of +1.0 — regardless of the adapting chromaticity. No such simple constraint governs the slope of the luminance detection contour. The 45°-225° direction will be here referred to as the “equichromatic” direction.

Resumen
Realizing that it is inherently difficult to match precisely the sending rates at the endhost with the available capacity on dynamic cellular links, we built a system, Octopus, that sends real-time data streams over cellular networks using an imprecise controller (that errs on the side of overestimating network capacity) and then drops appropriate packets in the cellular-network buffers to match the actual capacity. We designed parameterized primitives for implementing the packet-dropping logic, which the applications at the endhost can configure differently to express various content-adaptation policies. Octopus transport encodes the app-specified parameters in packet header fields, which the routers can parse to execute the desired dropping behavior. Our evaluation shows how real-time applications involving standard and volumetric videos can be designed to exploit Octopus for various requirements and achieve a performance that is 1.5 to 18 times better than state-of-the-art schemes.

Resumen
This paper argues that many pedagogical reform efforts falter because they fail to consider the cultural context of teacher and student behavior. Little guidance exists on how to adapt teaching practices to be compatible with culturally influenced behaviors and beliefs. We present evidence from three studies conducted as part of a large basic education program in Tanzania showing that some teaching activities are less effective or not well implemented because of culturally influenced behaviors in the classroom, namely children’s lack of confidence to speak up in class; a commitment to togetherness, fairness, and cooperation; avoidance of embarrassment; and age-graded authority. We propose ways teaching activities can be adapted to take these behaviors into account while still adhering to fundamental principles of effective learning, including student participation in their own learning, teaching at the right level, and monitoring students as a basis for adjusting instruction. Such adaptations may be made most effective by engaging teachers in co-creation of teaching activities.

Methodology: This report was developed through the co-design process of Mōhio’s Climate Innovation Lab, a fixed-term initiative which works with stakeholders to envision financial instruments to mobilise capital for climate-aligned projects and activities. A working paper was prepared through international market scanning and a review of primary and secondary literature on climate adaptation. This working paper became the basis for a workshop with local experts and stakeholders to test the viability of potential instruments in light of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique cultural, biophysical and regulatory context. The workshop included participants from finance services, insurance, institutional investment, academia and local and central government observers. These insights were reincorporated into this final concept paper. Mōhio would like to thank the workshop participants for their time and expertise.

Resumen
Multiple randomised trials have proven that targeted educational instruction is an effective approach to addressing learning gaps in low- and middle- income countries. This approach has been tested in multiple rigorous studies, including in Ghana, Kenya and India. This evidence brief reports a formal synthesis of the evidence and assesses the strength and generalisability of the evidence and the factors that drive the largest frontier effects in the literature. This brief also provides practical guidance on elements of targeted instructional approaches that drive the greatest impacts for students, and which are critical for the successful adaptation and scale-up of the approach across contexts.

Resumen
This rapid review draws on literature from academic, policy and non-governmental organisation sources. There is a huge literature on climate governance issues in general, but less is known about effective support and the political-economy of adaptation. A large literature base and case studies on climate finance accountability and budgeting in governments is nascent and growing. Section 2 of this report briefly discusses governance of climate change issues, with a focus on the complexity and cross-cutting nature of climate change compared to the often static organisational landscape of government structured along sectoral lines. Section 3 explores green public financial management (PFM). Section 4 then brings together several principles and lessons learned on green PFM highlighted in the guidance notes. Transparency and accountability lessons are then highlighted in Section 5. The Key findings are: 1) Engaging with the governance context and the political economy of climate governance and financing is crucial to climate objectives being realised. 2) More attention is needed on whether and how governments are prioritising adaptation and resilience in their own operations. 3) Countries in Africa further along in the green PFM agenda give accounts of reform approaches that are gradual, iterative and context-specific, building on existing PFM systems and their functionality. 4) A well-functioning “accountability ecosystem” is needed in which state and non-state accountability actors engage with one another. 5) Climate change finance accountability systems and ecosystems in countries are at best emerging. 6) Although case studies from Nepal, the Philippines and Bangladesh are commonly cited in the literature and are seen as some of the most advanced developing country examples of green PFM, none of the countries have had significant examples of collaboration and engagement between actors. 7) Lessons and guiding principles for green PFM reform include: use the existing budget cycle and legal frameworks; ensure that the basic elements of a functional PFM system are in place; strong leadership of the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and clear linkages with the overall PFM reform agenda are needed; smart sequencing of reforms; real political ownership and clearly defined roles and responsibilities; and good communication to stakeholders).

Resumen
This learning brief provides illustrative examples of three major adaptations the Coalition for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID) programme has undertaken while working within fragile contexts to promote freedom of religion or beilief (FoRB). These examples highlight how the programme has utilised embedded monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) strategies to encourage what Ramalingam et al. (2019) refer to as ‘adaptive rigour’, a concept which underscores the importance of transparent documentation of programmatic decision making processes during programme adaptations. In particular this learning brief discusses the use of nested theories of change as a mechanism to enable adaptive rigour within the 'multitude of smalls' approach in the CREID programme.

Resumen
This research brief examines the challenges of building trusting state-society relations during peacebuilding interventions in fragile conflict contexts. State officials face people's negative perceptions of the state caused by neglect or violent intrusion in the past, being projected onto them, hindering constructive alliances. To address these challenges, the brief proposes the following adaptation strategies: Hiring practices should prioritise officials who reflect the diversity of local communities, facilitating the emergence of rapport. These officials should undergo context training focusing on perceptions of the state, historical experiences of violence and neglect, local politics and effective communication approaches. Moreover, instiutionalised long-term partnerships between state officials and communities based on mutual understanding and empathy are vital for trust building. In addition, coordination among state institutions is crucial to avoid inefficiency and contradictory policies, making the state more legible and nuanced to citizens.
