cients, calculated over structuring windows. SASI de¯
nes a set of clique windows to extract and measure various structural properties of texture by using a spatial multi- resolution method. Experimental results, performed on various image databases, indicate that SASI is more successful then the Gabor Filter descriptors in cap- turing small granularities and discontinuities such as sharp corners and abrupt changes. Due to the °
exibility in designing the clique windows, SASI reaches higher average retrieval rates compared to Gabor Filter descriptors. However, the price of this performance is increased computational complexity. Since, retrieving of similar images of a given query image is a subjective task, it is desirable that retrieval mechanism should be con¯
gurable by the user. In the proposed method, basically, original feature space of a content-based retrieval system is nonlinearly transformed into a new space, where the distance between the feature vectors is adjusted by learning. The transformation is realized by Arti¯
cial Neural Network architecture. A cost function is de¯
ned for learning and optimized by simulated annealing method. Experiments are done on the texture image retrieval system, which use SASI and Gabor Filter features. The results indicate that con¯
gured image retrieval system is signi¯

and reviewing the history and the various forms of the externalist theory, it is argued that the properties offered by externalist theories as mental properties have no causal influence on behavior, and therefore cannot causally explain it. The argument is largely based on a method of comparing the causal powers of entities which are identical in all respects except their mental properties (as construed by externalism), and the conclusions are supported by metaphysical reflections on causation, dispositions, relational properties and historical properties. Objections to the defended view are considered and refuted. The thesis is written in the style of modern analytic philosophy.

Texto completos assertion in Truth and Method that art has a truth value. This conceptual background includes many important concepts which are indispensable in understanding the assertion that art has a truth value. Second chapter is mainly concerned with Bildung and sensus communis. Bildung describes the nature of knowledge which flourishes in the character of the person and which changes that person by penetrating the personality of him. Sensus communis describes the relationship of truth with the power of persuasion and the power of making right choices in social life. Taste, on the other hand, not only accompanies us when we are fulfilling our most basic needs in life and also shows itself in all of our moral decisions. In that sense, a developed taste is very effective in directing us to the truth. The third chapter offers an analysis of Gadamer&rsquo
s critique of Kant&rsquo
s aesthetics revolving around the concepts of judgment, taste, genius and Erlebnis. For Gadamer, Kant has subjectivized aesthetics. This subjectivization has two sides. Firstly, Kant argues that the experience of beauty does not give us any knowledge about the beautiful object. That is to say, Kant insists that aesthetic experience does not contain any cognitive element, because he believes that the only source of truth and knowledge is science. Secondly subjectivization means that Kant reduced art and beauty only to the experience of it
he talks only about experience of beauty, not about work of art itself at all. The forth chapter introduces the ontology of the work of art which is elaborated mainly on concepts of play, representation, mimesis, total mediation, contemporaneity. When inquiring into the mode of being of play, Gadamer defends that the subject of the play is play itself and in the same way in the experience of art the subject is not the subjectivity of the person who experiences it but the work of art. In the last chapter history of hermeneutics is elaborated in order to find the proper place of Gadamer&rsquo
s constituting concepts in the general frame of hermeneutics.

arises in their minds. Recommendation Systems address the problem of getting confused about items to choose, and filter a specific type of information with a specific information filtering technique that attempts to present information items that are likely of interest to the user. A variety of information filtering techniques have been proposed for performing recommendations, including content-based and collaborative techniques which are the most commonly used approaches in recommendation systems. This thesis work introduces ReMovender, a content-based movie recommendation system which is empowered by collaborative missing data prediction. The distinctive point of this study lies in the methodology used to correlate the users in the system with one another and the usage of the content information of movies. ReMovender makes it possible for the users to rate movies in a scale from one to five. By using these ratings, it finds similarities among the users in a collaborative manner to predict the missing ratings data. As for the content-based part, a set of movie features are used in order to correlate the movies and produce recommendations for the users.

that is, a deeper understanding of the content at the semantic level is required. Currently, manual techniques are being used to bridge the gap between low-level representative features and high-level semantic content, which are inefficient, subjective and costly in time and have limitations on querying capabilities. Therefore, there is an urgent need for automatic semantic content extraction from videos. As a result of this requirement, we propose an automatic semantic content extraction system for videos in terms of object, event and concept extraction. We introduce a general purpose ontology-based video semantic content model that uses object definitions, spatial relations and temporal relations in event and concept definitions. Various relation types are defined to describe fuzzy spatio-temporal relations between ontology classes. Thus, the video semantic content model is utilized to construct domain ontologies. In addition, domain ontologies are enriched with rule definitions to lower spatial relation computation cost and to be able to define some complex situations more effectively. As a case study, we have performed a number experiments for event and concept extraction in videos for basketball and surveillance domains. We have obtained satisfactory precision and recall rates for object, event and concept extraction. A domain independent application for the proposed framework has been fully implemented and tested.

PCK, all PCK components were studied. To get deep and rich answers to research questions asked, qualitative methodology was used. Participants were selected through purposeful sampling. Data were gathered through card-sorting activity, Content Representation (CoRe), semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and field notes. Results revealed that participants had two types of PCK, namely, PCK A for teaching electrochemistry and PCK B for teaching radioactivity. PCK A included content-based and teacher-centered instruction, many links to other topics in chemistry and in physics. The assessment was coherent which included different types of assessment strategies used at the beginning, during, and at the end of teaching. In PCK B, it was less teacher-centered. The link to other topics was limited. Additionally, teachers used fragmented assessment and were less knowledgeable about learners&rsquo
difficulties and misconceptions in radioactivity than they were in electrochemistry. Differences between PCK A and B may be related to nature of the topics. Learners need to have much pre-requisite knowledge both from chemistry and physics to learn electrochemistry. Also, there are more concepts in electrochemistry than there are in radioactivity. It seems that when teachers have to focus on more concepts to teach, they may have a tendency to teach more-teacher centered to save time. Teacher education programs should focus on topic-specific nature of PCK and provide topic-specific training to teachers.

Texto completos world, many systems and approaches make it possible for the users to be guided by the recommendations that they provide about new items such as articles, news, books, music, and movies. However, a lot of traditional recommender systems result in failure when the data to be used throughout the recommendation process is sparse. In another sense, when there exists an inadequate number of items or users in the system, unsuccessful recommendations are produced. Within this thesis work, ReMovender, a web based movie recommendation system, which uses a content boosted collaborative filtering approach, will be presented. ReMovender combines the local/global similarity and missing data prediction v techniques in order to handle the previously mentioned sparseness problem effectively. Besides, by putting the content information of the movies into consideration during the item similarity calculations, the goal of making more successful and realistic predictions is achieved.

In accordance with this purpose, elementary and high school curriculum and the appropriateness of the questions in the student selection test with the educational objectives of the curriculum are examined. In addition, dimensions of 2006, 2007, and 2008 SST biology items are examined by Exploratory Component Analysis and Confirmatory Component Analysis techniques. The result of those analysis revealed that SST biology items mostly focus on remembering skill and fail to assess higher order thinking skills. Additionally, there is not any consistency among 2006, 2007, and 2008 SSTs biology items in terms of dimensions which means there is not any construct in biology subtests of SSTs. The other aim of the present study is to identify how much academic and non-academic factors explain the biology achievement. While for academic factors reading comprehension, mathematics, physics, and chemistry achievements of students are used, age, gender, and school type are used for non-academic factors. Findings of the research revealed that academic factors, especially chemistry achievement, have significant affect on biology achievement. In terms of non-academic factors, graduating from selecting high school has important role for biology achievement. Additionally, older students and girls tend to have higher grades in biology.

Texto completos phenomenology can be analyzed simply by relying on the conception of intentionality. What I want to do is to put forward the logical grounds on which I can construct an acceptable account of Husserl&rsquo
s theory of intentionality. For this aim, firstly, I need to put some light on the nature of intentional acts or experiences. This suggests us that there is a close connection between the acts and what they are directed towards. Actually many have specified the relation between the act and the object, but what they have ignored was to give an exclusive explication of how such a relation can be connected with the content component. The penomenological content mediates between the intentional act and the intended object. There are some disagreements as regards whether the act is also directed towards the content or not. One of the significant aims of this research is to shed some light on the adequate arguments by which I will try to clarify that one can speak of such a directedness of intentional acts. In other words I believe that one can not only describe an intentional relation between the act and the intended object but also similar relations between the act and the content. There seem to be three parts to be examined interconnectedly: these, namely, are act, content and the object. For, the act is directed towards the object with the intermediation of the content. So his theory is not the same as the object theory of intentionality of which there are some defenders. Husserl&rsquo
s content theory is firstly examined in Logical investigations and Ideas respectively.

The trends for suction, angle of internal friction and cohesion, which change on the dry side and wet side of optimum moisture content, were analyzed. The compacted METU campus clay gains granular soil fabric at the dry side of optimum moisture content. As moisture content increases, cohesion increases up to optimum moisture content and then decreases. But angle of internal friction decreases as moisture content increases. Soaking affects the samples more which are on the dry side of optimum moisture content. The soil suction (total suction and matric suction) affects the shear strength, and an increase in soil suction increases the shear strength.

Also, for all fear factors female children and especially from low socioeconomic status reported higher level of fear than male preadolescents and adolescents. In general, it can be said that being female, from low socioeconomic status and young especially at age 8 is related to more intense fears. Fears of preadolescents at age 11, 12 and 13 were significantly different than preadolescents at least 2 years older than themselves. Overall most commonly endorsed fears were &ldquo
