Resumen
It is accepted, within the framework of the contemporary Catalan cultural system, that Pompeu Fabra was the architect of modern literary Catalan. The contemporary institutionalization of the Catalan language is therefore a product of the 20th century: a work of Fabra and Noucentisme. Yet before Fabra there was already modern Catalan literature, and there is no institutionalization of literature without an also institutionalized literary language. How is this contradiction resolved? The noucentists conveyed the idea that 19th-century literature was «languageless» literature, but a new look at the past compels us to rethink our views, and to ask ourselves whether reality requires further nuances. In this work, a proposal is made to periodise the progressive institutionalization of contemporary Catalan as a literary language, in a span that begins in 1859 and ends in 1913, with the implementation of the Fabra reform.

Summary: This paper provides a range of both synchronic and diachronic perspectives on the Catalan go-past, known in the literature as the perfet perifràstic. The first chapter presents an overview of the use and distribution of the feature in contemporary Catalan; the second chapter discusses the diachronic and synchronic attestation of the feature in other Romance languages, Occitan in particular. In chapter 3, the paper summarizes the state of the research on the grammaticalization process that underlies the go-past. In chapter 4, finally, the hypothesis that the feature diffused from (Old) Occitan into (Old) Catalan is postulated and underpinned with both historical and linguistic data. Summary: In this article we compare the contemporary legend known as «revenge rape» with the literary versions present in several works of Catalan literature, such as the famous novel Estudi en lila by Maria-Antònia Oliver, and the short narrative that is at its origin, «Fils trencats»; the play Anna, o la venjança by Manuel Crespo Serrat, the short novel by Inés Vidal Farré El metge i un gos d’atura, and the story «Bèsties carnivores» by Carlota Gurt. We also mention some other cultural reflections of this urban legend, such as the Greek mythology, the rape and revenge films, and some specific contemporary films. The Catalan children's author Josep Vallverdú published two crossover stories based on Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island. Les raons de Divendres (Friday's Reasons) (2003) gives an account of the episode of Crusoe and Friday told from the point of view of the servant, whereas El testament de John Silver (John Silver's Will) (2007) deals with the adventures of the pirate after searching for the treasure in the Caribbean. This paper demonstrates how Vallverdú uses his experience as a writer and translator to transform two canonical novels, through transposition into a contemporary context, in a way that facilitates an interaction between Catalan literature and English literature. In keeping with this exploration of literary tradition, the two sequels are also analysed as twenty-first century expressions of a Western literary tradition that abounds in adventure stories set at sea.

In recent years several projects have emerged that address Catalan culture from a spatial point of view. This article aims to review the theoretical framework of what is known as the spatial turn in order to evaluate its main contributions, and some potential future orientations, in Catalan cultural studies. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of the main approaches inside spatial studies. In the second part, a selection of studies on Catalan culture and literature is reviewed from the perspective of their connections with spatial studies. Finally, the third part presents three case studies focused on examples from Catalan poetry, film, and science fiction and interprets them from three different spatial perspectives: the first based on the phenomenological perspective, the second on the methodology of emotional and sensory geography and the concept of cognitive mapping , and the third on the spatial figurations of postmodern empire. This final section aims to broaden the applications of spatial analysis, extending it to the interpretation of an open, diverse selection of representations of contemporary Catalan culture.

Resum: Càrcer va ser un copista del segle XVII que va escriure un proemi en vers de gran interès per a l’estudi de la transmissió i la valoració de la poesia catalana del Barroc. Aquest proemi s’estudia en el present article des de dos punts de vista. En primer lloc, s’observa la seva importància de cara a comprendre la relació entre tres manuscrits miscel·lanis que ens han arribat fins avui en dia. Això ens aporta més elements per a la consideració del context dels poemes inclosos en aquests reculls, i ens pot ajudar a escatir l’autoria d’alguns poemes que romanen dubtosos. En segon lloc, el poema també és un testimoni força singular pel que fa a la consideració d’alguns autors de l’època per part d’un personatge coetani que, per tant, està deslligat de qualsevol judici posterior. Tot plegat ve complementat per l’edició crítica del poema, que havia restat inèdit fins ara.Paraules clau: literatura catalana. poesia barroca, cançoners manuscrits, proemi, edició crítica.Abstract: Càrcer was a copyist from the 17th century that wrote a proem in verse of great interest for the study of the transmission and the valoration of catalan poetry from the Barroque period. This article studies this introductory poem from two points of view. First of all, the article points out the importance of this poem in order to understand the relationship between three miscellaneous manuscripts that have survived into our present day. This gives us more elements for the consideration of the context for some of the poems included in these volumes, and it can also help us to establish the authorship of some of the poems that would otherwise remain unclear. On the other hand, this poem is also a singular artifact when it comes to the consideration of the authors of catalan barroque poetry by a contemporary author that is therefore removed from future judgement. All of this has been complemented with the edition of this poem, which had been unedited until now, by following textual criticism.Keywords: catalan literature, barroque poetry, manuscripts, proem, textual criticism.

Joan Fuster (Sueca, 1922–1992) was one of the most important essayists of Catalan literature. Diccionari per a ociosos (Dictionary for the Idle), published in 1964, has been widely seen as one of his masterpieces, not only because of the wide range of topics he deals with, but also because of his witty and contemporary insight. Despite this critical acclaim, many aspects of this book still deserve further research. In this article we try to study more deeply the sources of Dictionary for the Idle, focusing on Bertrand Russell’s In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays (1935). Beyond the similar titles, we think that Joan Fuster could have been inspired by Russell’s literary style and intellectual attitude, not only because of stylistic and thematic similarities, but also because of the attested references (among which we will comment on which of Russell’s books are kept in Fuster’s personal library). A direct rewriting between In Praise of Idleness… and Diccionari per a ociosos must be dismissed due to lack of written proof, as well as direct allusions, which do not appear whatsoever. However, our aim is to trace the link between these two authors and the influence that the former had on the latter, in the context of his general influence on both Spanish and Catalan contemporary essay.

Tackling violence against women in the theatre is often a controversial matter. To identify the ethical risks that victim representation may entail, we conduct a comparative analysis of two works about Ciudad Juárez’s feminicides staged in Barcelona: 2666 (2007), an adaptation of Roberto Bolaño’s novel directed by Àlex Rigola, and House of Strength (2011) by Angélica Liddell. This article argues that while Rigola reduces victims to mere sexual objects with no narrative of their own, Liddell places the voice and resilience of Mexicans in the foreground and represents their bodies respectfully. Adriana Nicolau is completing her doctoral studies on ‘Feminisms in contemporary Catalan theatre’ at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) in Barcelona. Her publications include articles for Feminismo/s. Teresa Iribarren is an assistant professor at UOC, where she is the Director of the Catalan Literature, Publishing, and Society research group. Her current research focuses on narratives of violence and the promotion of human rights in literature.

This dissertation is built on the basis that during the first decades of the twenty-first century, it has appeared a diverse corpus of Catalan prose-works characterized by a new representation of both the imaginary and the narrative of rural traditional landscape. Traditionally, the representation of rural landscape was enclosed with specific points of the territory and had idealized visions related to the values of origin and continuity. This dissertation points toward a new representation of the rurality. The critical analysis of seven narratives serves as the starting point to examine a new aesthetics of the rurality and the relationship that individuals build and stablish with it. Hence, this return to the rural place is geographical, literary and it implies a gesture of human and social reflection, as well as the constitution of a new rurality marked by the I-place, as called in this study, and the landscapes of restlessness
En els darrers anys, durant les primeres dècades del segle XXI, han aparegut en català diverses narracions que donen un punt de vista nou al discurs sobre el paisatge rural tradicional. Les representacions del paisatge de la ruralitat es trobaven circumscrites a punts específics del territori i a visions idealitzades relacionades amb els valors de l’origen i la permanència. En canvi, aquesta recerca es proposa mostrar una nova representació de la ruralitat. La lectura crítica del corpus de set obres narratives és la base a través de la qual s’analitza, d’una banda, una nova estètica de la ruralitat i, de l’altra, la relació que hi estableix l’individu. Aquest estudi acaba mostrant una tornada al lloc rural que és geogràfica, literària i de reflexió social i humana, així com la constitució d’una nova representació de la ruralitat marcada pel que aquí s’anomena el jo-lloc i els paisatges de la inquietud

This doctoral thesis deals with the intellectual biography of the writer and journalist Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889, Figueres, 1956). It reconstructs the life and professional studies of the author, and the most important facets of his literature and journalism. In addition, it examines his literary texts. A special emphasis has been placed on the study of journalistic production of Brunet and on the analysis of the professional profile of the author. Examination and assessment of its production has been accurate, including a classification of the items and a comparison of his journalistic style with that of other contemporary authors, both Catalan (Josep Pla and Joseph M. de Sagarra), French (Charles Maurras and Léon Daudet) and English (GK Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc). The latter part of the work analysises the condition of "victor won" of Manuel Brunet after the Spanish Civil War, and how this author is an example of a whole generation of conservative Catalan nationalist witers who lived a difficult situation after the conflict.
Aquesta tesi doctoral aborda la biografia intel•lectual de l’escriptor i periodista Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889-Figueres 1956). Reconstrueix la trajectòria vital i professional de l’autor i estudia les facetes més rellevants de la seva producció literària i periodística. A més s’hi analitzen els seus textos literaris. S’ha posat especial èmfasi en l’estudi de la producció periodística de Brunet, així com en l’anàlisi del perfil professional de l’autor. L’examen i valoració de la seva producció ha estat detinguda, amb l’agrupació dels articles per àmbits temàtics i la comparació del seu estil amb el d’altres autors contemporanis, tant catalans (Josep Pla i Josep M. de Sagarra) com francesos (Charles Maurras i Léon Daudet) i anglesos (G. K. Chesterton i Hilaire Belloc). A l’última part del treball, s’aborda l’anàlisi de la condició de “vencedor vençut” de Manuel Brunet després de la guerra, i la forma com aquest autor és exemple de tota una generació d’escriptors catalanistes conservadors que van viure una situació complicada després del conflicte.

Aquest estudi extreu les tendències literàries que sobresurten en el panorama novel·lístic en llengua catalana del segle XXI a partir de l’anàlisi de set eixos definidors i característics d'aquesta narrativa: la relació temàtica amb la crisi identitària, la incertesa i la manca de sentit general; la plasmació de la quotidianitat i el context immediat per mitjà de personatges amb actituds i patologies molt properes als individus coetanis; la inclusió normalitzada del fantàstic en textos de temàtica i ambientació realistes a través del gènere del realisme màgic o el neofantàstic; l’auge del mètode de la fragmentació discursiva mitjançant diverses tècniques que trenquen amb la coherència, la lògica i la uniformitat; l’increment en l’ús de la pràctica metaliterària, és a dir, aquella narrativa que es refereix a ella mateixa; la tendència creixent a l'elaboració de narracions d’autoficció, en què l'autor s'introdueix de manera parcial dintre de la història, generalment a partir de la primera persona narrativa, i la forta instauració del formalisme literari, que es fa visible en obres que avantatgen la forma (el com) al contingut (el què).
Este estudio extrae las tendencias literarias que sobresalen en el panorama novelístico en lengua catalana del siglo XXI a partir del análisis de siete ejes definidores y característicos de esta narrativa: la relación temática con la crisis identitaria, la incertidumbre y la falta de sentido general; la plasmación de la cotidianidad y el contexto inmediato por medio de personajes con actitudes y patologías muy cercanas a los individuos coetáneos; la inclusión normalizada del fantástico en textos de temática y ambientación realistas a través del género del realismo mágico o el neofantástico; el auge del método de la fragmentación discursiva mediante diversas técnicas que rompen con la coherencia, la lógica y la uniformidad; el incremento en el uso de la práctica metaliteraria, es decir, aquella narrativa que se refiere a ella misma; la tendencia creciente a la elaboración de narraciones de autoficción, en que el autor se introduce de forma parcial dentro de la historia, generalmente a partir de la primera persona narrativa, y la fuerte instauración del formalismo literario, que se hace visible en obras que aventajan la forma (el cómo) al contenido (el qué).
This study extracts the literary trends that emerge in the 21st century Catalan-language novel scene from an analysis of seven defining and characteristic axes of this narrative: the thematic relation with the identity crisis, the uncertainty and the lack of general sense; the expression of everyday life and immediate context through characters with attitudes and pathologies which are very close to contemporary individuals; the normalized inclusion of the fantastic in texts of realistic topic and setting by the genre of magical realism or neofantastic; the rise of the method of discursive fragmentation through various techniques that break with consistency, logic and uniformity; the increase in the use of metaliterary practice, that is to say, the narrative that refers to itself; the growing tendency to elaborate autofiction narratives, in which the author is partially introduced into the story, usually from the first narrative person, and the strong implementing of literary formalism, which becomes visible in works that put the form (the how) before the content (the what).

Cette thèse a pour objet l'analyse de la relation mère-fille dans un corpus composé de treize œuvres majoritairement romanesques, publiées entre 1962 et 2015, de sept auteures catalanes. Ces dernières écrivent en castillan (Esther Tusquets, Ana María Moix et Milena Busquets), en catalan (Mercè Rodoreda, Carme Riera et Maria Mercè Roca) ou dans les deux langues (Jenn Díaz). La mère est liée aux origines et à l'identité et, de fait, la relation mère-fille est souvent une zone ravagée, conflictuelle, du moins complexe, ce qui en fait un sujet d'écriture extrêmement riche. Nous proposons ainsi une analyse à la croisée de l'histoire, de la sociologie, de la psychologie, de la psychanalyse et de la littérature qui offre une approche nouvelle de la relation de la mère à la fille et de la fille à la mère. Ce travail comparatif nous permet d'établir des similitudes entre les représentations de la figure maternelle, des typologies de mères, tout en constatant la diversité et la complexité des relations mère-fille dans ces œuvres et de leur traitement littéraire. La mère devient sous la plume de ces sept auteures un personnage central, à la fois réel et symbolique, qui est revisité, réinventé et transmis à travers les pages de l'œuvre littéraire. Par ce processus, l'écriture devient un moyen de perpétuer la présence de la mère, de la faire exister de manière immortelle dans la mémoire collective
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the mother-daughter relationship in a corpus composed of thirteen works, mainly novels, published between 1962 and 2015, by seven Catalan authors. The latter write in Castilian (Esther Tusquets, Ana María Moix and Milena Busquets), in Catalan (Mercè Rodoreda, Carme Riera and Maria Mercè Roca) or in both languages (Jenn Díaz). The mother is linked to origins and identity and, in fact, the mother-daughter relationship is often a ravaged, conflicting, at least complex, area, which makes it an extremely rich subject for writing. We thus propose an analysis at the crossroads of history, sociology, psychology, psychoanalysis and literature which offers a new approach to the relationship of mother to daughter and of daughter to mother. This comparative work allows us to establish similarities between the representations of the maternal figure, typologies of mothers, while noting the diversity and complexity of the mother-daughter relationships in these works and their literary treatment. The mother becomes under the pen of these seven authors a central character, both real and symbolic, who is revisited, reinvented and transmitted through the pages of the literary work. Through this process, writing becomes a means of perpetuating the presence of the mother, of making her exist immortally in the collective memory

The purpose of this dissertation is to create a catalog of the published, solo vocal songs of 25 living American composers. Through this project, visibility will be given to a significant amount of contemporary literature that is currently unknown and / or underused by many singers and voice teachers today. Exposure to the literature in this project will encourage singers and teachers to give deserving attention to a wealth of contemporary American song literature, and will help to stimulate the study, practice and performance of other contemporary songs and composers. I have selected 25 living American composers. The composers represent a variety of compositional styles, and the songs vary in level of difficulty. The songs chosen are examined based upon criterion for vocal study at the collegiate level, and the entire repertoire is appropriate for traditional classical vocal training. Many of these composers' songs are readily available in public and collegiate libraries across the country. There are some composers, however, whose songs are currently not available in libraries, but are deserving of attention. The unpublished songs of the selected composers are not included because the purpose of this project is to increase accessibility. The composers for this dissertation include: Dominick Argento, Daniel Asia, Robert Baksa, Seymour Barab, Jack Beeson, William Bolcom, John Bucchino, Tom Cipullo, John Corigliano, John Frantzen, Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler, Ricky Ian Gordon, Daron Hagen, John Harbison, Jack Heggie, Lee Hoiby, Richard Hundley, Anne Kilstofte, Lori Laitman, Libby Larsen, John Musto, Thomas Pasatieri, Andre Previn, Gene Scheer, and Richard Pearson Thomas. The body of the dissertation consists of a brief biography of the individual composers followed by analyses of the composers' music. Each published song is analyzed according to a set of criterion for vocal study at the collegiate level. The annotations include: title, poet, publisher and date, dedication, vocal range, tessitura, recommended voice type, level of difficulty of the vocal and piano accompaniment, possible uses, brief musical and textual description, and other pertinent information for the study and performance of the music. This dissertation will encourage the study, practice and performance of contemporary American music. The annotated catalog will include vital information for the quick selection of songs, and the information I compile will be invaluable to singers and voice teachers searching for contemporary American literature. The composers included in this project will also benefit from the exposure of their work. There are, of course, many more composers whose songs are deserving of inclusion in this project. Annotated catalogs of larger scope or of differing perspectives should be created as further study.

This PhD dissertation attempts to describe and value the translation into Catalan of English language poetry during the period that comprises the years 1990 to 2010. It is the aim of this thesis to consider a theoretical approach regarding the study of poetry translation based on rhetoric. As far as twenty translations are studied in order to offer quite an assorted, large and diverse collection of samples that supports the fulfillment of the pursued objective. All the English language poets that belong to the corpus have mostly published their work during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This chronological delimitation hinders the application of a historicist methodology that would not fit in the synchronic and theoretical goals of the current dissertation. Hence, the methodology employed is comparative, descriptive and empirical. It is impossible to avoid the comparative method when studying any translated text in depth, because translation needs to confront two texts: the source text and the target text. Whereas the descriptive and empirical methods allow to reach supporting conclusions, since the thesis always departs from texts that have been previously analyzed and described. Thus, this dissertation aims at showing that translated poetry texts can be described, studied and assessed from rhetoric, a discipline that, from its origins, has been linked to grammar and poetry and, for this reason, it is based on the knowledge of the language procedure that is characteristic of literature
Aquesta tesi doctoral es proposa descriure i valorar les traduccions al català de poesia en llengua anglesa durant el període comprès entre els anys 1990 i 2010. El propòsit de la tesi és plantejar un enfocament teòric per a l’estudi de la traducció de poesia basat en la retòrica. S’hi estudien fins a vint traduccions, a fi d’oferir un mostrari prou variat, ampli i divers que permeti assolir l’objectiu proposat. Tots els poetes en llengua anglesa que formen part del corpus han publicat, majoritàriament, la seva obra, durant els segles XX i XXI. Aquesta delimitació cronològica impedeix aplicar una metodologia historicista que no encaixaria amb els objectius sincrònics i teòrics d’aquesta tesi. Així doncs, la metodologia emprada és comparatista, descriptiva i empírica. El mètode comparatiu és del tot inevitable a l’hora d’aprofundir en l’estudi de qualsevol text traduït, perquè la traducció obliga a acarar dos textos: el text de partida i el text d’arribada. El mètode descriptiu i empíric permet arribar a conclusions contrastables, per tal com la tesi parteix sempre dels textos analitzats i prèviament descrits. La tesi es proposa demostrar que els textos de poesia traduïts poden ser descrits, estudiats i avaluats a partir de la retòrica, una disciplina que, des dels seus orígens, ha estat vinculada a la gramàtica i a la poètica, per la qual cosa es basa en el coneixement dels procediments del llenguatge característics de la literatura

Resumen
El plantejament del treball es fa partint de dues constatacions: l'estudi del silenci requereix una visió interdisciplinària i parlar-ne constitueix una paradoxa en si mateix. L'aproximació es realitza tenint en compte la seva gran rellevància en l'art en general i en la poesia en particular, en què la seva influència ha estat decisiva, especialment a partir del segle XX. Al llarg d’aquest treball volem ressaltar el silenci poètic o, millor dit, la seva capacitat d’eloqüència, el seu dot de suggeriment, la seva idoneïtat per expressar l’inefable com a veu de misteri i com a codi d’enigma, i, en definitiva, el seu indiscutible paper com a transmissor de l’experiència vital i artística dels poetes. En aquest recorregut polisèmic, hem focalitzat en els poetes catalans del segle XX l'exemplificació del significat vital i artístic que el silenci i la seva profunda i àmplia poètica representa.
The approach of the work is based on two observations: the study requires an interdisciplinary silence and talking about it is a paradox in itself. The approach is made taking into account the great significance in art in general and poetry in particular, where its influence has been decisive, especially since the twentieth century. Throughout this paper, we highlight the poetic silence, or rather, their ability eloquence, her dowry suggestion, their suitability to express the ineffable mystery as voice and as a source of mystery, and, ultimately, its indisputable role as a transmitter of life experience and artistic poets. This route polysemous we focused on Catalan poets of the twentieth century exemplification of vital significance and artistic silence and deep and broad poetic accounts.

Resumen
This chapter argues that the Spanish language, including its literatures and cultures, is inherently postnational. For this reason, critical approaches based on transatlantic exchanges may unlock the creative potential of Hispanism’s multilingualism. These transatlantic dialogues aim to reconfigure the spatial organization of the world through a postnational language that reflects a paradigm of mixture (more so than mestizaje) and offers a cultural model based on heterogeneity. By citing examples of authors and literary works from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century written on both sides of the Atlantic, Ortega reminds us that the Spanish language and its literatures are not only the product of a melting pot of Iberian regionalisms (Galician, Basque, Catalan) but also of the indigenous languages of the Americas. In light of the challenges of globalization and a globalized market, this cultural territory establishes itself as a potential promise of compatibility and a new kind of modernity.

Resumen
From the end of the nineteenth century to the first three decades of the twentieth century, the will to modernize Catalan literature favoured the translation of contemporary Spanish drama from Galdós to Casona into Catalan, and its performance. In the same period, some Catalan authors such as Àngel Guimerà, Santiago Rusiñol, and Josep M. de Sagarra were translated into Spanish and also performed on stages in Madrid. However, the exchange that took place between both Iberian dramas received a heavy blow with the establishment of Franco’s dictatorship in 1939. While emphasizing the importance of cultural promoters, playwrights, translators, and critics for contact between Catalan and Spanish drama, this chapter studies the presence of the latter in literary and dramatic collections translated into Catalan and, in turn, that of Catalan drama in the same type of collection translated into Spanish during a time marked by an unusually fruitful ‘complicity’ between both theatrical scenes.

This chapter examines key cultural, political, and literary issues intertwined within the postcrisis Catalan context. Through a detailed study of Marta Rojals’ novels, it offers a cross-analysis of formal literary elements with concepts from sociolinguistic studies and the framework surrounding the Normalització pujolista project and its connection to the culture of Spain’s Transition to democracy. The chapter sheds new light on some of the most prominent social and political conflicts in contemporary Catalonia since the collapse of the real estate bubble and the onset of the Catalan independence movement. Simultaneously, the author seeks to identify the elements driving the re-politicization of current Catalan narrative, considering factors such as linguistic conflict, national identity, and gender. The chapter also expands the understanding of what can be considered political in other literatures of the Spanish State.

Geographers have not been prominent in studying peace movements. This is not surprising, given the strong foundations of the discipline in warfare and imperialism. To date, the only general geographic survey of peace movements appears to be Brunn’s 1985 study, a catalog of peace organizations and their activities that covered mainly the United States. Other studies by geographers are few and focus on individual antiwar campaigns or disarmament strategies. However, more recently, geographers have made significant contributions to the analysis of the broader theoretical context of peace movements. These works offer spatial conceptualizations of social movement mobilization. A general appraisal of the geographic dimensions of peace movements is still missing. This chapter represents a tentative step in this direction. The examination is conducted in four steps. The first section deals with general characteristics of peace movements. It discusses problems of definition and presents the intellectual and philosophical foundations of peace activities. The second section approaches the geography of peace movements from a historical perspective. It examines the development of organized peace groups from their origins in the nineteenth century to the present. Different scales of the changing geopolitical and societal contexts will frame the discussion. Such a geohistory will allow us to identify and interpret changing intensities of activism. The third section addresses the geography of contemporary peace movements from a conceptual viewpoint. Armed with theoretical concepts from the recent literature on social movements, it examines the places and spaces of mobilization. The 1980s peace movement against nuclear armaments will serve as a case study to illustrate the insights that can be gained from a geographic approach. Finally, I will present the major implications that stem from the geohistorical and conceptual discussions in the conclusion. Peace is more than the absence of war. Though it is traditionally defined as the opposite of war, peace scholars and activists now embrace a notion of peace that includes the conditions necessary to bring about a nonviolent and just society at all levels of human activity. Contemporary peace movements not only seek to abolish the overt violence of war, but also struggle to transform the social structures responsible for death and human suffering.
