Resumen
A study on art books is necessary to understand their role in contemporary cultural spaces and how to create a great book on art that contributes to enriching cultural landscapes. The article highlights the relevance of printed books in today's context, focusing on art themes, emphasizing the significance of art literature in the digital age, pointing out its ability to offer a deeper engagement with art phenomena. The aim of the article is to explore the types of art books and their significance in contemporary cultural spaces. Research methods include theoretical approaches involving the exploration, compilation, and analysis of relevant scientific and professional literature and sources. A survey, conducted through structured interviews, involved questioning cultural and art experts about the significance of art books in today's cultural spaces. The results of the study demonstrate that the relevance of books, including art books, will persist; their publication in print format will not disappear as art books possess added value created by the physical, tangible format of the book, its design elements, material properties, and diverse culturally significant content.

Resumen
Books have a significant role in the diffusion of cultural information since they not only carry the weight of cultural inheritance but also serve to preserve historical culture. The major goals of contemporary book layout design are to establish harmony and coherence; maintain overall coordination between the internal and external; and have distinctive, inventive, and modern aesthetic impacts in the context of the educational metacosmos. It is important to emphasize the artistic value and beauty of contemporary books using proper creative language design strategies. The discussion of contemporary book layout design therefore helps to increase understanding of contemporary book layout design. This essay briefly addresses book layout design and examines how books are constructed in colleges and universities. Based on the educational metauniverse environment, it outlines a number of issues that should be taken into account when designing the book’s layout. Layout analysis and text image preparation methods are used in modelling. The experimental findings indicate that this algorithm can recognise text regions with an accuracy of 94.8% and a recognition rate of 94.5%, respectively. It is concluded that the method suggested in this work has some reference value for the advancement of university book layout design and can be applied effectively in layout analysis and text typesetting.

Resumen
The aim of this paper is to show the current situation in contemporary Italian grammaticography, i.e., to analyse grammatical models (traditional, generative and dependency model) grammar reference books for different purposes are based on. By means of diachronic and synchronic analysis of grammar reference books, we have examined and showed to what extent traditional theories and terminology are retained, i.e., to what extent generative grammar and valency theory are present. The introductory part of the paper shows the development of Italian grammaticography from the first generative research conducted in Italy to this day. The first Italian generative grammar books were published in the late 1960s and early 1970s (Costabile 1967, Saltarelli 1970, Gamberini 1971, Parisi, Antinucci 1973), i.e., shortly after Noam Chomsky’s first monographs on generative grammar theory were published. However, although it can be said that Italian grammaticography kept up to date with the research carried out worldwide in the field of linguistics, the first comprehensive descriptive grammar book (Comprehensive Consultative Italian Grammar Book) was not published until 1988, when the most comprehensive traditional Italian grammar book by Luca Serianni was published as well, which is the reason why that year is considered to be a turning point in Italian linguistics. Following this turn of events, which is frequently described as revolutionary, grammar book production has flourished while authors have begun to turn to new linguistic theories more and more, i.e., mostly to the fruits of generative grammar and other theories formulated within its framework, although not for want of work dedicated to traditional grammar. Therefore, for the last two and a half decades, Italian grammaticography has abounded in traditional grammar books mainly for the purposes of school use and “new” (Andreose 2017), i.e., „modern” (Vanelli 2010) grammar books primarily for the purposes of pursuing linguistic issues professionally, as well as studying languages at the university level. The central part of the paper is dedicated to analysing individually some of the most renowned grammar books published during the first decades of the 21st century (Salvi, Vanelli 2004, Andorno 2003, Sabatini et al. 2011, Ferrari, Zampese 2016) with the aim of showing their new features in relation to tradition (the reference point of traditional linguistics was the Serianni's grammar book) regarding terminology, the norm, topics and the organisation of the very grammar books. The main conclusion of this research is that contemporary grammar books actually show the greatest departure from tradition concerning the norm and the examples sentence analyses are based on, since normative grammar books, whose goal is to establish certain grammar rules, are completely rejected and replaced by detailed descriptive grammar books aiming at describing fully all registers of the Italian language and all its possible linguistic constructions, regardless of their grammatical accuracy. A somewhat minor, but still quite significant, departure from tradition can be seen in the organisation of grammar books and topics they deal with, since syntax has surely taken precedence in analysis, but also that some traditional topics have been rejected, while some new topics have been included in grammatical analyses (e.g. phonetics and textual linguistics). The characteristic which, nonetheless, has undergone minimal changes in that “transition” from the traditional to the modern way of linguistic analysis is terminology that can be concluded to have been brought up to date and expanded rather that completely changed.

The research was directed to the modern critical books that received the book “Al-Muazana bayna Abu Tammam and Al-Buhturi” by Abu Al-Qasim Al-Hassan bin Bishr for Al-Amidi (370 Ah) to answer the main question: what are the main features of criticism in Al-Muazana book in contemporary criticism books? The study aims to reveal the views on the critical approach of Al-Amidi, and then trying to reconcile the opinions of contemporary critics that discussed the method of Al-Amidi in his book, one of them was the first book in which applied criticism appeared. One of contemporary critics’ opinion was that it was characterized by investigating the opinions of the old critics about the Poetry of the Poets, a book in which objectivity was achieved in equalizing and neutrality. Contemporary critics almost agreed that Al-Amidi was characterized by planning his approach in the introduction to his book and its application. The most important results: Al-Amidi explained the poetic thefts attributed to Al-Buhturi and Abu Tammam simultaneously. He explained the many poetries that Abu Tammam took from others with his many archives. Contemporary critics pointed out that Al-Amidi was not interested in the linguistic errors of poets, and he argued that there were many mistakes of ancient poets. Contemporary critics differed about Al-Amidi’s intolerance of the poet Al-Buhturi and all his arguments.

Resumen
Purpose – This paper aims to contribute to discussion about the changing role of libraries and their collections, through discussing projects designed by architecture students. Design/methodology/approach – The paper reflects on design projects produced by final-year students studying for an undergraduate degree in architecture. A project was set for a group of students to design a “Book Repository”. Each researched their own interpretation of what this might be, given contemporary issues such as increasing digitisation, falling numbers of library visitors, changing users’ needs and what they interpret as a future for books. This paper reviews a selection of the projects in the context of contemporary research, and discusses the book as a physical object, contemporary library design and the role of libraries as civic buildings. Findings – Despite being designed by digitally literate students, physical books are highly significant in every project; however, the cultural significance of the books is more important than the objects themselves. Also, the provision of spaces for the act of reading is notably absent. The relationship between the library and its context was a key theme for several projects, which explore innovative means through which to engage the public. Originality/value – Collectively these projects contribute to debate over the role of books and libraries in contemporary culture through the eyes of young designers. The paper will be of interest to those involved in the procurement and design of libraries.

Abstract The field of poetry and poetics has been revitalized by a decade and a half of close attention to many of its enduring premises and assumptions. Three new books by Jasper Bernes, Margaret Ronda, and Heather Milne show how US poetry from 1945 to the present responds to the changing conditions of historical capitalism. Departing from older periodizing narratives anchored in the shift from modernism to postmodernism, these books uncover the poetic histories that emerge in tandem with changes in economic structures and political regimes.

Resumen
In the context of new times, new types of writing are created in order to meet the demands and wishes of the contemporary public. Printed books make no exception especially given that the reading of (especially printed) books has declined, despite variable statistics over the years. The book reading habits have thus decreased, so making printed books attractive to readers has been a matter of concern for contemporary writers like Adam Thirlwell, as illustrated in his novella Kapow! (2012). In line with the contemporary mind-set of revolutionizing the way in which narrative is presented and the technique in which it is composed, Thirlwell plays with readers’ conceptions and expectations about literary texts, producing a highly experimental work. Along with the montage/collage technique, which will be discussed in the present paper, such concepts as ergodicity, autofiction, metatextuality, paratextuality, metamodernism or altermodernism are central to a proper understanding of how Thirlwell’s novella works and represent highlights of the exploratory undertaking of this article. Keywords: ergodic literature; metamodernism; altermodernist fiction; contemporary autofiction; revolution of the text; intra-notes; collage/montage.

Resumen
The American Girl series is a constantly evolving book series for children featuring the lives of girls living in different historical periods of the US, starting from the colonial era up to nowadays. The aim of this paper is to study the verbal and nonverbal portrayal of the oceanic spaces of the past in the books about the historical characters and their rediscovery in the books about the contemporary characters. An attempt is made to analyse the different roles of oceanic images in stories of migration and mobility of the American Girls, their families, friends, acquaintances both in the past and in the present. The images of the oceans in the books about the historical characters and in those about the contemporary characters are analysed separately and the results are compared and contrasted. It is assumed that the oceans which are depicted both verbally and nonverbally in the American Girl series have become not only territorial borders for some of the characters but also metaphoric ones.

Resumen
This comprehensive qualitative examination of two groups of Canadian picture books, 57 titles published in 2005 and 120 titles published in 2015, offers comparative data that demonstrate patterns related to authors, illustrators, characterization, genres, audiences, and particular elements of Radical Change. Following book collection, content analysis was conducted with a consideration of Dresang’s notion that books for children are evolving with respect to forms and formats, perspectives, and boundaries. Our process for analysis was developed from Berg’s framework of systematic content analysis based on predetermined as well as emerging categories. There is much recent research exploring particular content in children’s literature, supporting the central importance of literature in the classroom and community. Comparative Canadian studies across decades, however, are rare, and are increasingly important as a way to track and describe the changes that are taking place with respect to books for young people. It is interesting that in both 2005 and 2015, picture books tended to feature children as protagonists, with the highest number of books from the 2005 set utilizing the fantasy genre (at 34%) or realistic fiction (at 28%) and the highest number of books from the 2015 set occurring in non-fiction (at 34%, up from 16% in 2005) or fantasy (at 31%). Historical fiction in both years presented comparatively low, at 12% and 3%, respectively.Findings of this study support and extend the notion of Radical Change. The research team noted marked innovations within the 2015 group related to forms and formats, boundaries, and perspectives. Of particular note are the increasing numbers of books that present Indigenous content and perspectives. While many of the changes appearing in Canadian picture books between 2005 and 2015 might be predicted through the standard categories of Radical Change (Dresang, 1999), other findings also emerged that suggest new Radical Change considerations. Continuing to examine children’s literature as artifacts of a culture can illuminate particular aspects of that culture and offer opportunities to engage authors, illustrators, and publishers in filling gaps where particular perspectives or topics are missing. Advocacy is important as children’s literature continues to be a source of tension for what it portrays and presents as well as its missing voices. A knowledge of patterns and trends in relation to available content and resources supports classroom practice as well as encourages classroom research and further explorations of the evolving landscape of children's books.

Resumen
The article examines the applicability of new interdisciplinary methods to the artistic process in Russia using the example of three new books exploring the problems of contemporary art. These books prove the applicability of the achievements of intellectual magazine criticism (Kira Dolinina), institutional criticism (Stanislav Savitsky), and gender criticism (Olesya Avramenko) to the local artistic life of recent decades. What unites these books is criticism of criticism: an articulated metaposition to the critical strategies that have developed in the art community. Each of the three books is written by a professional and addresses several audiences at once: artists, art researchers, and the general public. Although all three books differ in genre and way of presentation, they have a lot in common: way from works or examples of artistic activity familiar to the public to problematization of the institutional side of contemporary Russian art. We consider in detail the context of the origin of these books, presentation features, correlation with academic research. We made a general conclusion about the importance of institutional research for the further development of Russian art criticism.

Because artists’ books can be expensive to buy and to keep, institutions need to have a clearly articulated rationale for collecting them. This could range from documenting the history of art, and contemporary art in particular, to a survey of how artists have used the book format to explore their ideas. This latter approach would support the use of artists’ books in practical workshops leading to the creation of yet further artists’ books.

Abstract: Marriage and Morals is one of Russell’s most famous and best-selling books. Its publication brought about considerable public debate fuelled in part by a large number of book reviews in newspapers and popular periodicals. Here I outline some of the issues that most exercised reviewers. Despite the book’s sensational nature, it is noteworthy that many reviewers either recognized that Russell was mostly restating, albeit very well, established critiques about contemporary morality, and/or largely missed what was distinctive in Russell’s contribution to the debate.

Resumen
Any analysis of reading today must consider contemporary writing practices. The epochal shift from print to digital texts has been under way for some time. Indeed, print books are now so interpenetrated with digital media at every stage of their production that they may more appropriately be considered an output form of digital texts than a separate medium. Much has been written about the end of books, but, as Alan Liu observes, they have been deconstructed almost from the beginning, from the remixing of Bible excerpts according to the liturgical calendar to the experimental fiction of Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy to Raymond Queneau's Cent mille milliards de poèmes (“End” 509-11). This tradition notwithstanding, Jessica Pressman correctly detects in some contemporary novels anxiety about the continued life of books and a desire to reassert the book's authority in the face of the exponential expansion of the Web and the ongoing conversion of books into digitized texts, including the several million now available at Google Books and other online venues.

Many interesting books are born out of international cooperation. Often cooperation agreements between academic institutions are purely formal, their function primarily declarative: we have many good partners abroad, we are connected with so many international institutions. But sometimes this cooperation indeed exists and gives good results. This is the case with the two-volume work being reviewed here: Contemporary Udmurt Culture, published by the University of Tallinn, but relying on work conducted by both the Udmurt Research Institute and the Estonian Literary Museum. Behind the institutional reality, however, there is human agency: the initiators of this book, the editors, are a group of scholars who have long been acquainted through different international events and have had the opportunity to discuss several issues which led to the desire to achieve this work.

Resumen
The article considers a popular and controversial modern phenomenon — the use of books as a medium for various mixed media art forms. The author gives examples of contemporary book altering techniques, such as book carving, painting and upcycling, etc., following the trend of transforming our interaction with books into a show of craftsmanship and entertainment. The critic points out that, in order to create a visually stunning and artistically expressive altered book, artists often work with beautifully published tomes, complete with quality materials, imaginative design and moderately used look, rather than with inferior mass-produced or defective books. It is not uncommon for book alterers to use antiques or rare editions: for example, British and American book artists particularly value Victorian books. It follows that, rather than popularising and creatively reimagining the book as such, this fad causes erosion of the meaning and profanes the process of book reading and contemplating.

Resumen
Children’s picture books have developed relatively maturely in Western countries, and Chinese publishing houses have chosen imported children’s picture books as their first choice for a long time. Regarding the development of the domestic children’s picture book market, due to the short development time, there are currently only a handful of children’s books that truly integrate Chinese traditional culture, and the connotation has not been truly inherited and popularized, and the unique historical meaning has not been truly reflected in the market. resonate in children’s lives. As far as image design is concerned, due to the influence of foreign children’s picture books, domestic children’s picture books mostly focus on natural expressions of objects and lack deep cultural value and spiritual connotation. As a result, our country’s children’s picture books lack national characteristics. Traditional Chinese painting is part of Chinese cultural heritage and has a unique form of artistic expression that can embody the connotation of Chinese humanistic spirit. Resumen
The paper seeks to develop new avenues for a study of book journalism. Specifically, it deals with a problem of institutionalization of book journalism as a self-sufficient thematic direction in contemporary cultural journalism. More specifically, the article aims to explore a publicism of Kostiantyn Rodyk, the well-known Ukrainian cultural journalist formerly a book journalist. He is the former editor-in-chief of one of the most professional specialized magazine Knyzhnyk-Review (2000―2007s), the television and radio presenter, the founder and top manager of the annual National book rating Knyzhka Roku, columnist of the newspapers Den’ and Ukraina Moloda, author of the book series Ukrainian Best. Knyzhka Roku, some non-fiction books Actualna Literatura and Sizif XX. Knyzhka vs. polityka. The latter feature numerous essays dealing with actual publishing and literary process in Ukraine. We show that combined in one book; it created continuous nonfiction (publicist) meta-narrative or nonfiction (publicist) meta-text. The latter makes it possible to distinguish the most specific features of quality book journalism. The paper attempts to define concepts of the «book publicism» and «book journalism», highlight differences between book journalism and literary-critical journalism. The author proposes to consider book publicism as a generalized phenomenon uniting both texts and the process of their creation. On the contrary, we argue that book journalism is one of the possible mediatized practices. It is a discourse that implies both the creation and the public reflection on the products of journalistic activity. In the course of the textual analysis of publicism works of Kostiantyn Rodyk, we have identified essential features of his book, non-fiction criticism. Those were: a broad subject (so-called «book culture»); socio-communicative approach to comprehension of literary and publishing artifacts; multi-functionality (informing about new books and literary works by the Ukrainian and foreign authors as well as publishing houses; criticism; creating culture; worldview, aesthetic and artistic tastes shaping and so on); hypertextuality and cross-mediality; preference given to genres such as essay and review; masterful use of expressive stylistics and linguistic means of popularization of knowledge. We conclude that such specific features can be considered as criteria for quality book journalism, a benchmark for mastering creative writing about the «world of books». Key words: publicism, book journalism, literary criticism, Kostiantyn Rodyk, literary and publishing process, essay.

Resumen
This article considers the book form itself as an ornamental object. The binding, paper and ink appeal to the senses and all add to experience of the reader. The future is a place of e-books, online publications and Instagram posts, and yet this arguably makes the carefully considered design of the book form even more important in the physical books that we do chose to view. The study examines a series of examples, drawing from artists' books, pop-up books and mainstream publishing. The work draws strongly on the collection of pop-up books at the National Library of Scotland and the artists' book collection at Edinburgh College of Art, looking at both historical and contemporary works. Initially exploring how the form of the book itself can visually communicate a narrative, the study goes on reflect on the emotion associated with opening a pop-up book, as if in the presence of a theatrical production, made more extreme by the embellishments employed. The place of the book form within a digital world is considered and, finally, the emergence of decorative books in the form of colouring books related to mindfulness.

Resumen
Modern and contemporary books, easily replaceable in the internet age, are weeded from collections and disposed of because of their poor quality materials and construction. For an art library, where obsolescence is rarely an issue, the 20th- and 21st-century book can be a problem. Rare and seminal works in our collections are crumbling because they are acidic or perhaps they just cannot withstand the handling (and photocopying). We have become alert to the conservation of books from the hand-press period, but do not always know what to do with recent publications, or we cannot afford to undertake the measures necessary. As the artist’s book as an art form reaches its 50th birthday, we highlight the conservation of one such volume, in hopes of opening up discussion about the care of our contemporary treasures.

Resumen
The aim of the article is to describe the contemporary function and role of an adult reader as a mediator in a young child’s contact with a book. The specificity of children’s literature in the context of literary communication and contemporary education was discussed. It shows what competencies are required from an adult to read picture books and stories about difficult situations in a child’s life together with a child. Selected literary examples illustrate that books for the youngest require joint dialogical reading, and the adult most often assumes the function of a translator of difficult words, the depicted world, as well as the cultural, social, or political context. The article is of a review nature, the clues collected in it indicate the need for conscious and competent mediation in contemporary children’s reading by teachers, parents, and other adult participants of literary education.

Book reviews published in professional journals provide an interesting glimpse of contemporary interests, ideas and attitudes. The third number of the Journal of Mental Science (formerly Asylum Journal) included book reviews and, after appearing intermittently for a while, they became a regular feature throughout the remainder of the nineteenth century. These reviews were probably the principal source of information for asylum doctors about current books in their field, although there were a small number of alternatives for the more specialist readers.

Resumen
Numerous scholars argue that the book of Ruth, with its story concerning mixed marriages of Judahites with Moabite women, consciously opposes the exclusivist rhetoric of the books of Ezra–Nehemiah. However, a detailed analysis of the narrative rhetoric of the book of Ruth, especially compared to the supersessive rhetoric of the roughly contemporary books of Samuel–Kings, reveals that the main purpose of the book of Ruth was to delegitimize the claims of the tribe of Ephraim to domination in Israel, and against this background to promote the tribe of Judah with its Davidic dynasty. Therefore, the book of Ruth most probably served as a rhetorical-ideological model for the much more elaborate, likewise consciously Judean narrative of the books of Samuel–Kings.

Resumen
The object of the study is “silent books” – books without text; the plot and author’s position are revealed exclusively through a sequential series of illustrations. The subject of the study is the graphic novels of young but already internationally recognized authors - Sean Tan and Guojin. "Silent books" are a relatively new direction in children's book illustration. The prototype of “silent books” - comics - was distinguished by rather primitive graphics, so although they were popular, but they were considered a “low genre” in the professional community. Then the comic went beyond kitsch culture and became an element of middle-class culture, and at the end of the century the comic was reinterpreted in pop art and included in the formation of neo-elite culture. The individuality of the authors is manifested in the choice of a plot related to personal and family history, as well as in the choice of a character of a certain psychological make-up - “silent heroes”, endowed with a rich imagination, the ability to empathize and equal friendly relationships. The technique in the “silent books” of Sean Tan and Guojin has the syncretism and dualism of Western and Chinese traditions. It can be interpreted both in terms of Chinese writing with “dry” ink, and in the European style of “chiaroscuro”; in all cases we had clearly defined contour and a sharp contrast of light and shadow. The author's self-expression in a graphic novel is very specific to book illustration. “The Quiet Book” can be considered as a special type of author’s utterance, similar to improperly direct speech in literature. All this distinguishes the graphic novels under consideration from other forms of children's book illustration, as an example of new paths in art, as well as an original and modern interpretation of social problems of society.

Resumen
This paper examines theoretical, graphical, and material dimensions of the contemporary print culture of architecture with a focus on one work from a variety of European practices. It regards the contemporary architect's book as a speculative and discursive design object. Michel Foucault, particularly in his works, What is an Author? (1969) and The Archaeology of Knowledge (1972), criticises that while constructing an author's body of works, alternative and unclassified genres are omitted from the domain and the texts attached to the single name belong to a system of homogeneity, filiation, and reciprocal explanation. Yet the contemporary architect's book expands the borders of genres by comprising unconventional materials, such as musical notes, artistic photographs, paintings, technical and scientific diagrams, official reports, building regulations, newspaper articles, and advertisements, as well as combining texts and photographs from co-workers, partners, clients, and users, rather than emerging as the product of a single author. The paper interprets the use of various forms of graphical narration and the coalescence of novel terminology and jargon as a contribution to the power of language and discursive formation.
