Texto completoThe aim of this research work is to present the development of discontinuous approaches and the influence of stereotomy to simulate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of historical large-scale masonry structures. Thus, the objectives are the qualitative and quantitative evaluations on the different existing approaches and the main constitutive laws, the analyses and calibration of mechanical parameters, and providing strong indications on the best level of discretization needed for these kinds of approaches. Thus, the study involves the use of implicit and explicit time integration schemes for structural dynamics, respectively in the Non-Smooth Contact Dynamics method and Cohesive Zone Model implemented in the LMGC90© code, where sliding motions are governed by Signorini's impenetrability condition and dry-friction Coulomb's law, and in the Discrete Element Method with cohesive and tensional behaviors at the joints in the 3DEC© code. A set of case studies from real structures was represented adopting four different geometric models ranged from the most complex one, including the full geometry and multi-leaf masonry walls, to the simplest one, including the single-leaf walls as a simplification of the real masonry. The numerical results highlighted the failure modes depending on the shape, size and texture of the masonry and the modalities of progressive damage under dynamic actions. Moreover, the numerical approaches presented have proven to be capable of simulating large displacements and complete block separations, reproducing complex mechanical behaviors and making predictions on the vulnerability assessment of the historical masonry buildings. The results discussed are successful and valuable in view of preservation of the cultural heritage from future damages proposing guidelines for strengthening and seismic retrofitting of structures.

Texto completoThis work analyses the historiography which has studied the formation of African-American cultures and the cultural exchange between Africans and Euro-Americans, sustaining that it has been characterized by a contradictory coexistence of universalistic and particularistic presuppositions about the nature of culture. These contradictions can already be observed in Franz Boass Anthropological culturalism, which moves between two definitions of culture on the one hand, as an organic and stable spirit and, on the other hand, as a historical and dynamic aggregate of customs and ideas , indicating permanence and transformation as simultaneous aspects of cultural contact. Melville Herskovits was grounded on Boass ideas and inherited these contradictions when he studied African-American cultures, representing them simultaneously as an acculturation, focusing a discontinuous relation with the past, and as a preservation of africanisms, stressing a continuous relation with African cultures. These difficulties have unfolded themselves up to the contemporary debate about the concept of creolization and Mintz and Prices work, which describes African-American cultures focusing cultural creativity and the survival of African structures at the same time. Authors of the so-called afrocentric perspective have tried to solve this impasse by minimizing transformations and stressing continuity with the past. By doing so, they have intensified the dualism implicit on the particularistic arguments of previous analyses. Another tradition of studies about cultural exchange in colonial societies including authors such as Gilberto Freyre, Fernando Ortiz and others associated to post-colonial thought has developed a different conceptual model, which focuses on the ambivalences and inversions that can be observed on the affective dimensions of cultural contacts. These authors have interpreted cultural exchange through a dialectical logic, deconstructing dualistic thoughts, embracing the self-contradictory nature of the fenomena, and thus indicating a theorical alternative to the models inherited from anthropological culturalism.

Texto completoThis qualitative study investigates an American immigrant group in the Central-West region of Brazil and its perceptions of the Portuguese and English languages as well as Brazilian and American cultures. More specifically, this research identifies and analyzes both language and cultural domains within the community in order to establish a sociolinguistic profile of the group. Ethnographic theory was the basis for data collection as well as for identification and analysis of the group's main cultural domains, which were evidenced in participants speeches during interviews and social interactions. Language domains were gathered through interviews, questionnaires and field observations. The theoretical section includes works on language and its influence on society (BAKER, 1993; GROSJEAN, 1982; ROMAINE, 1995), conceptions of culture in various areas of study, such as anthropology, sociology and ethnography (LARAIA, 2007; SPRADLEY, 1980; VILA NOVA, 1985), and identity and difference as social products (HALL, 2007; SANTOS, 2007; WOODWARD, 2007). Results revealed that both languages are used in the community, although English is the predominant language in most social domains. Portuguese is used within the family domain in cases of interracial marriage and during social interactions outside the community. English, in turn, is present in the other domains such as the church, the neighborhood, the school and work inside the community. Shortly, English is seen by most participants as the link that connects them to their native country while Portuguese is seen as an instrument to gain access to job and higher education. Results also revealed that faith, conversion and testimony are prominent cultural domains in the participants cultural horizons as well as a varied range of stereotypes about the American and the Brazilian cultures.
Este estudo de natureza qualitativa e interpretativa tem como objetivo geral investigar as percepções sobre as línguas portuguesa e inglesa e as culturas brasileira e norte-americana de um grupo de imigrantes que vivem na Região Centro-Oeste do Brasil. Em termos mais específicos, a pesquisa busca identificar e analisar (a) os domínios de uso do inglês e do português na comunidade, com vistas a delinear o perfil sociolinguístico do grupo, e (b) os domínios culturais da comunidade no que diz respeito às línguas e culturas brasileira e norteamericana. Para tanto, recorremos aos princípios da etnografia para a coleta de dados e também para a identificação e análise semântica dos principais domínios culturais observados na fala dos participantes durante as entrevistas e interações sociais. Com base em entrevistas, questionários e observações de campo, investigamos os domínios de uso do inglês e do português no interior da comunidade. O referencial teórico deste trabalho apresenta estudos que discorrem sobre a língua e sua influência na sociedade (BAKER, 1993; GROSJEAN, 1982; ROMAINE, 1995), os conceitos de cultura veiculados por diversas áreas do saber, como a antropologia, a sociologia e a etnografia (LARAIA, 2007; SPRADLEY, 1980; VILA NOVA, 1985) e, ainda, a identidade e a diferença como produtos do meio social (HALL, 2007; SANTOS, 2007; WOODWARD, 2007). Os resultados mostram que tanto o português quanto o inglês são usadas na comunidade, embora haja predominância do inglês. Ao que se refere aos domínios de uso das línguas, a língua portuguesa é usada no domínio familiar nos casos de casamentos inter-raciais e nas interações sociais, fora da comunidade. A língua inglesa, por sua vez, predomina nos demais domínios, isto é, na igreja, na escola, na vizinhança e no trabalho para aqueles que atuam no interior da comunidade. O inglês é visto pela maioria como o elo que os une ao país de origem enquanto que o português é o instrumento de trabalho. O estudo também mostra que o horizonte cultural dos participantes perpassa domínios culturais tais como a fé, a conversão e o testemunho, além de revelar estereótipos sobre as culturas norte-americana e brasileira.

O objetivo desta dissertação é explorar o processo de atrito (ou erosão lingüística) que se produz na L1 de imigrantes hispanofalantes espanhóis adultos residentes no Brasil e com proficiência em português, que é, portanto, a L2, a língua de contato. A ação desta língua desempenha um papel primordial, já que a sua influência sobre a L1 na forma de interferências é uma das duas causas principais do atrito, sendo a outra a falta de contato com a L1 e a conseguinte privação de insumo. A pesquisa, de tipo qualitativo, analisa a fala de 8 participantes. Os dados foram elicitados mediante entrevistas semi-estruturadas gravadas e posteriormente transcritas. Também foi utilizado um questionário sociolingüístico que proporcionou informações pessoais variadas sobre os participantes, as quais ajudam a explicar alguns dos resultados. A análise do corpus de fala permitiu marcar, classificar e descrever os traços lingüísticos que singularizam o espanhol/L1 dos participantes e que podem ser interpretados como sinais de atrito. O objetivo principal é descobrir e mostrar os efeitos experimentados pela L1, o espanhol, quando exposto ao contato prolongado com a L2, o português do Brasil. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The aim of this dissertation is to explore the process of attrition or language loss which i produced in the L1 of Spanish speaking adult Spaniards who are immigrants and residing in Brazil and who are proficient in Portuguese, which is, therefore, the L2, the contact language The action of the latter language plays a decisive role, since its influence over the L1 in th form of interference is one of the main causes of attrition, the other being a lack of contac with the L1 and the resulting deprivation of input. The research carried out, of a qualitativ nature, analyses the speech of 8 participants. The data was elicited by means of sem structured interviews which were later transcribed. A sociolinguistic questionnaire was also used to obtain personal information of a varied nature about the participants, which helped explain some of the results. The analysis of the speech corpus allowed us to identify, classify and describe the linguistic features that characterize the participants’ L1/Spanish and which can be interpreted as signs of attrition. The main goal is to find out and show the effect suffered by the L1, Spanish, when exposed to prolonged contact with the L2, Brazilian Portuguese.

A presente dissertação constitui uma reflexão sobre os significados da produção e da transmissão da experiência do fazer cordel, para os cordelistas residentes no D.F., no período de 1986 aos dias atuais. Para tanto, a partir das narrativas dos cordelistas residentes no D.F., dos cordéis por eles produzidos e de artigos do jornal Correio Braziliense, reportagens da revista A Brasil Cordel e documentos do Arquivo Público, busco uma análise do modo como essa arte migrou para o D.F., como se desenvolveu, se sedimentou e o sentido da produção, transmissão e ressignificação dessa arte em novas terras. Na tentativa de estabelecer uma leitura do mundo do cordel no D.F. procurei realizar essa pesquisa sob o prisma da cultura, como um conjunto de práticas onde se configura uma visão de mundo, onde se presentifica o modo como o grupo social organiza suas práticas, e, onde se encontram elementos que nos permitem compreender as representações sociais, seja a literatura, sejam os rituais de uma comunidade, que produzem os significados, a partir dos quais atribuímos sentidos à nossas vidas cotidianas. É através desse imaginário, fator de grande importância para a construção do saber histórico, que homem atribui significados à sua vida individual e social, pois a rede simbólica aí expressa apresenta possibilidades infinitas para o fazer social e também permite a constante ressignificação das experiências do indivíduo. Creio que pela necessidade de perpetuar esse imaginário popular, com o qual se tecem os sentidos da experiência vivida no cotidiano, é que o cordel adquire posição significativa na vida dos moradores do Distrito Federal, especialmente na vida dos cordelistas e seus ouvintes. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The present dissertation represents a reflection about the meanings of the production and transmission of the cordel-making experience, concerning Federal District’s cordelists, from 1986 to the present days. Having set this aim, and starting from cordelists’ testimonials and work, as well as from articles extracted from the “Correio Braziliense” newspaper, “A Brasil Cordel”magazine and from the Public Archive’s documents, I build an analysis of the way with which this sort of art has migrated to the Federal District, how it has evolved and assembled, and the meaning of the production, transmission and re-signification of this piece of art in new lands. Attempting to establish a perspective of Cordel’s world in the Federal District, I intended to conduct this research under the light of culture as a group of manners where a world vision is configured, where the way in which the social group organizes its customs is “presentified” and where we can find elements which allow us to understand the social representations, including literature and the community’s rituals, which produce the meanings from which we make sense of our everyday life. Through this imaginary, factor of great importance to the construction of the historical knowledge, men attribute meanings to their individual and social life, once that the symbolic net there typified displays infinite possibilities towards social action and allows the individual’s experiences’ constant re-signification. I believe that cordel acquires a significant role in the lives of the Federal District’s citizens, especially in the lives of the cordelists and its listeners, through the necessity of perpetrating this imaginary, which is employed in order to constitute the senses of the quotidian experience.

The important number of urukeen material discovered on many sites of northern Mesopotamia has led to the conclusion that this presence was the result of an urukeen expansion in this region. However, the use of anthropological theories for the archaeological study of cultural contacts enables to explore other forms of contact and to propose the hypothesis according to which the urukeen material discovered in these sites is the result of the will of the northern Mesopotamian leaders to reach political, economic and social advantages. The leaders emulation, who want to take advantage of the urukeen power to consolidate their status, is the result of a compromise between the elites of these two regions allowing both parties to find their interests

Texto completoIn the region Alto Uruguai River, archeological research have been deveolped since 1950 and reinforce the importance of that river for the pre-historical people. The archeological artifactual variability found in that region, as it had occurred to other Brazilian areas, was initially organized in phases and traditions, according to Cultural Ecology field. Over the last decades, research has been raising new information about the collector-hunters related to Umbu tradition and their technical systems, which had occupied the region in the passage Pleistocene-Holocene and about the ceramist societies, Guarani and Itararé-Taquara, which colonized the region Alto Uruguai in the last millennium. By doing this research, it is aimed to suggest new elements on the cultural contacts established beteween the agricultural ceramist societies Guarani and Itararé-Taquara, that occupied the Volta do Uvá (Alto Uruguai River), during Late Holocene. The cultural contact is understood hereby, not only as mecanism for interchange of manufactured goods, but also methods and techniques to elaborate the ceramic. The technological and stylistic analysis performed in the ceramic sets Guarani and Itararé-Taquara, left evident two of the cultural traditions differenciated, which even occupying the region in the same space-time block, they seem to have had a low degree of cultural interaction, at least related to ceramic sets.

Texto completoThe IPHAN lab, responsible to recover artworks, participated in 10 exchanges with Latin American countries between 1964 and 1973. All exchanges were centered on the figure of Edson Motta, head of the sector, related to the transmission of restoration practices and consulting activities. This study analyzes the reasons for Motta role, from his professional background and institutional path point of view, as a specialist assigned to transmit restorative brazilian experience to other preservationists groups in Latin America. Motta benefited initially from the decisive commitment of IPHAN Director, Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade, enabling his professional development in American institutions, in the context of the policy of \"Good Neighbor\" between the US and Brazil. Additionally he was benefited, later, from the international context of the 1960s, focused on the development of an International Heritage System, promotion of cooperative actions between nations for their heritage preservation and for the training of skilled technicians for restoration of cultural goods. Thus, from the study of Motta\'s career, it was possible to evaluate the action of the federal agency for heritage protection from an unusual angle, enabling us different readings of the institution, its functions, its internal and external links and circulation that this body had on world preservationists contexts, presenting yet important aspects of the work of the IPHAN to protect and preserve movable cultural property and works of art integrated into the architecture.
