Resumen
AbstractThis paper deals with the concepts of condensed and strongly condensed domains. By definition, an integral domain R is condensed (resp. strongly condensed) if each pair of ideals I and J of R, I J = ﹛ab/a ∈ I, b ∈ J﹜ (resp. I J = a J for some a ∈ I or I J = Ib for some b ∈ J). More precisely, we investigate the ideal theory of condensed and strongly condensed domains in Noetherian-like settings, especially Mori and strong Mori domains and the transfer of these concepts to pullbacks.

Resumen
AbstractAn integral domain D with identity is condensed (resp., strongly condensed) if for each pair of ideals I, J of D, IJ = {ij ; i ∈ I; j ∈ J} (resp., IJ = iJ for some i ∈ I or IJ = Ij for some j ∈ J). We show that for a Noetherian domain D, D is condensed if and only if Pic(D) = 0 and D is locally condensed, while a local domain is strongly condensed if and only if it has the two-generator property. An integrally closed domain D is strongly condensed if and only if D is a Bézout generalized Dedekind domain with at most one maximal ideal of height greater than one. We give a number of equivalencies for a local domain with finite integral closure to be strongly condensed. Finally, we show that for a field extension k ⊆ K, the domain D = k + XK[[X]] is condensed if and only if [K : k] ≤ 2 or [K : k] = 3 and each degree-two polynomial in k[X] splits over k, while D is strongly condensed if and only if [K : k] ≤ 2.

Resumen
Water condenses on a surface in ambient environment if the surface temperature is below the dew point. For water collection, droplets should be transported to storage before the condensed water evaporates. In this study, Laplace pressure gradient inspired by conical spines of cactus plants is used to facilitate the transport of water condensed in a triangular pattern to the storage. Droplet condensation, transportation and water collection rate within the bioinspired hydrophilic triangular patterns with various lengths and included angles, surrounded by superhydrophobic regions, were explored. The effect of relative humidity was also explored. This bioinspired technique can be used to develop efficient water collection systems. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Bioinspired materials and surfaces for green science and technology (part 2)’.

Resumen
We use the theory of Condensed Mathematics to build a condensed cohomology theory for the Weil group of a p -adic field. The cohomology groups are proved to be locally compact abelian groups of finite ranks in some special cases. This allows us to enlarge the local Tate duality to a more general category of non-necessarily discrete coefficients, where it takes the form of a Pontryagin duality between locally compact abelian groups.

Resumen
AbstractIt is proved that an integral domain R is a Bézout domain if (and only if) R is integrally closed and I J = {ij|i ∊ I, j ∊ J} for all ideals I and J of R; that is, if (and only if) R is an integrally closed condensed domain. The article then introduces a weakening of the "condensed" concept which, in the context of the k + M construction, is equivalent to a certain field-theoretic condition. Finally, the field extensions satisfying this condition are classified.

AbstractLet A be a finite dimensional algebra over a finite field F. Condensing an A-module V with two different idempotents e and e′ leads to the problem that to compare the composition series of V e and V e′, we need to match the composition factors of both modules. In other words, given a composition factor S of V e, we have to find a composition factor S′ of V e′ such that there exists a composition factor Ŝ of V with Ŝ e ≅ S and Ŝ e′ ≅ S′, or prove that no such S′ exists. In this note, we present a computationally tractable solution to this problem.

AbstractA condensed domain is an integral domain such that IJ = {xy : x ∊ I, y ∊ J } holds for each pair I, J of ideals. We prove that, under suitable conditions, a subring of a discrete valuation ring is condensed if and only if it contains an element of value 2. We also define the concept strongly condensed.

Resumen
Two mathematical problems in disordered systems are studied: geodesics in first-passage percolation and conductivity of random resistor networks. In first-passage percolation, we consider a translation-invariant ergodic family {t(b): b bond of Z²} of nonnegative random variables, where t(b) represent bond passage times. Geodesics are paths in Z², infinite in both directions, each of whose finite segments is time-minimizing. We prove part of the conjecture that geodesics do not exist in any fixed half-plane and that they have to intersect all straight lines with rational slopes. In random resistor networks, we consider an independent and identically distributed family {C(b): b bond of a hierarchical lattice H} of nonnegative random variables, where C(b) represent bond conductivities. A hierarchical lattice H is a sequence {H(n): n = 0, 1, 2} of lattices generated in an iterative manner. We prove a central limit theorem for a sequence x(n) of effective conductivities, each of which is defined on lattices H(n), when a system is in a percolating regime. At a critical point, it is expected to have non-Gaussian behavior.

Resumen
In nonlinear optical waveguide structures, injection of an optical beam above a given threshold intensity can be theoretically shown to emit spatial solitons. An all-optical switch based on this phenomenon is designed and computer simulations show that the phenomenon persists despite detrimental effects such as saturation of the nonlinearity and nonlinear absorption. In the cylindrical geometry of an optical fiber, a soliton ring can be emitted from the core and fragment into filaments via a transverse modulational instability. The inclusion of temporal dispersion can destabilize spatially stable solutions, both for normal and anomalous group velocity dispersion. For a saturating nonlinearity, the temporal dispersion can be used to generate trains of nonlinearly self-bound light packets from a continuous sub-emission-treshold input field.

Resumen
The use of soft materials has led to the development of soft devices that have the potential to be more robust, adaptable, and safer for human interaction than traditional rigid systems. State-of-the-art developments push these robotic systems towards applications such as soft rehabilitation and diagnostic devices, exoskeletons for gait assistance, grippers that can handle diverse objects, and electronics that can be embedded in the human body. Furthermore, compliance has found its way into the design of materials that derive their properties from their structure, not from their chemical composition (i.e. metamaterials or architected materials). Applications of metamaterials range from tunable auxetic behavior, stiffness, optical properties and phononic and acoustic band-gap behavior to tunable surface properties such as the drag coefficient, and chemistry. These examples illustrate the potential of using compliance to create new and improved functionality in structural and robotic applications. While the geometrical non-linearities and instabilities that arise when using soft or flexible materials directly complicate the design process and fall outside the scope of traditional engineering, exactly these non-linearities make the systems inherently capable of rich behavior. As such, to bring these systems closer to application and to uncover their true potential, we need to gain a better understanding of the principles that govern their behavior. The main focus of this dissertation is on the design of non-linear structures and devices that exhibit a nontrivial relation between input and output (i.e. loading and response). I propose analytical, computational and relatively simple experimental techniques that allow us to effectively explore the design space, and that lead to an understanding of the relation between shape and function in compliant systems. More specifically, I explore the effect of the shape and boundary conditions in periodic porous structures and soft deformation sensors, propose a new type of soft inflatable actuators that harnesses snap-through instabilities to achieve instantaneous changes in length, force and pressure, and develop a design strategy that enables mechanical metamaterials for which the volume and shape can be dramatically reconfigured. Altogether, the proposed techniques and case studies can inform simplified routes for the design of tunable mechanical metamaterials and soft devices over a wide range of length scales.

Bernstein, Lisa Joan. "Quantum theories of self-localization". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/298722.

Texto completo
Resumen
In the classical dynamics of coupled oscillator systems, nonlinearity leads to the existence of stable solutions in which energy remains localized for all time. Here the quantum-mechanical counterpart of classical self-localization is investigated in the context of two model systems. For these quantum models, the terms corresponding to classical nonlinearities modify a subset of the stationary quantum states to be particularly suited to the creation of nonstationary wavepackets that localize energy for long times. The first model considered here is the Quantized Discrete Self-Trapping model (QDST), a system of anharmonic oscillators with linear dispersive coupling used to model local modes of vibration in polyatomic molecules. A simple formula is derived for a particular symmetry class of QDST systems which gives an analytic connection between quantum self-localization and classical local modes. This formula is also shown to be useful in the interpretation of the vibrational spectra of some molecules. The second model studied is the Frohlich/Einstein Dimer (FED), a two-site system of anharmonically coupled oscillators based on the Frohlich Hamiltonian and motivated by the theory of Davydov solitons in biological protein. The Born-Oppenheimer perturbation method is used to obtain approximate stationary state wavefunctions with error estimates for the FED at the first excited level. A second approach is used to reduce the first excited level FED eigenvalue problem to a system of ordinary differential equations. A simple theory of low-energy self-localization in the FED is discussed. The quantum theories of self-localization in the intrinsic QDST model and the extrinsic FED model are compared.

Resumen
In this thesis, we consider two problems in the Q-tensor theory of nematic liquid crystals. The first concerns eigenvalue constraints on the Q-tensor order parameter. In particular, by employing a singular potential constructed by Ball and Majumdar, we consider the existence, regularity and "strict physicality" of weak solutions to the Beris-Edwards equations of nemato-hydrodynamics. In the second part of the thesis, we consider a gradient flow of the well-studied Landau-de Gennes energy. We prove some rigorous results on the average long-time statistical behaviour of its solutions, which are in agreement with experimental observations in the condensed matter physics literature.

Since its isolation in 2004, that resulted in the Nobel Prize award in 2010, graphene has been the object of an intense interest, due to its novel physics and possible applications in electronic devices. Graphene has many properties that differ it from usual semiconductors, for example its low-energy electrons behave like massless particles. To exploit the full potential of this material, one first needs to investigate its fundamental properties that depend on shape, number of layers, defects and interaction. The goal of this thesis is to perform such an investigation. In paper I, we study electronic transport in monolayer and bilayer graphene nanoribbons with single and many short-range defects, focusing on the role of the edge termination (zigzag vs armchair). Within the discrete tight-binding model, we perform an-alytical analysis of the scattering on a single defect and combine it with the numerical calculations based on the Recursive Green's Function technique for many defects. We find that conductivity of zigzag nanoribbons is practically insensitive to defects situated close to the edges. In contrast, armchair nanoribbons are strongly affected by such defects, even in small concentration. When the concentration of the defects increases, the difference between different edge terminations disappears. This behaviour is related to the effective boundary condition at the edges, which respectively does not and does couple valleys for zigzag and armchair ribbons. We also study the Fano resonances. In the second paper we consider electron-electron interaction in graphene quantum dots defined by external electrostatic potential and a high magnetic field. The interaction is introduced on the semi-classical level within the Thomas Fermi approximation and results in compressible strips, visible in the potential profile. We numerically solve the Dirac equation for our quantum dot and demonstrate that compressible strips lead to the appearance of plateaus in the electron energies as a function of the magnetic field. This analysis is complemented by the last paper (VI) covering a general error estimation of eigenvalues for unbounded linear operators, which can be used for the energy spectrum of the quantum dot considered in paper II. We show that an error estimate for the approximate eigenvalues can be obtained by evaluating the residual for an approximate eigenpair. The interpolation scheme is selected in such a way that the residual can be evaluated analytically. In the papers III, IV and V, we focus on the scattering on ultra-low long-range potentials in graphene nanoribbons. Within the continuous Dirac model, we perform analytical analysis and show that, considering scattering of not only the propagating modes but also a few extended modes, we can predict the appearance of the trapped mode with an energy eigenvalue close to one of the thresholds in the continuous spectrum. We prove that trapped modes do not appear outside the threshold, provided the potential is sufficiently small. The approach to the problem is different for zigzag vs armchair nanoribbons as the related systems are non-elliptic and elliptic respectively; however the resulting condition for the existence of the trapped mode is analogous in both cases.

AbstractNoting that lemmas are a key feature of mathematics, we engage in an investigation of the role of lemmas in automated theorem proving. The paper describes experiments with a combined system involving learning technology that generates useful lemmas for automated theorem provers, demonstrating improvement for several representative systems and solving a hard problem not solved by any system for twenty years. By focusing on condensed detachment problems we simplify the setting considerably, allowing us to get at the essence of lemmas and their role in proof search.

Resumen
The model of evolution of the condensed products as a part of a flow of combustion products of solid propellant is developed. The model includes the description of physical and chemical transformations for two basic fractions of the condensed products: agglomerates and smoke oxide particles (SOPs). Model testing is carried out using experimental data about evolution of the condensed products for two compositions in the conditions of a one-dimensional flow. These compositions differ considerably in properties of combustion products at a surface of burning propellant. The results of testing give the grounds to draw a conclusion about high enough quality of modeling.

Resumen
A loop heat pipe (LHP) analytical model that simulates the steady state and transient thermal behaviors of LHPs with multiple evaporators and multiple condensers has recently been developed. It can be used as a stand-alone computer code or as a subroutine to general spacecraft thermal analyzers. Multi-evaporator and multi-condenser LHPs are more complex in their operation when compared to single-evaporator LHPs because of the thermal and fluid interactions among the evaporators, compensation chambers, and condensers. This analytical model has been used to simulate the thermal performance of a miniature loop heat pipe (MLHP) with two evaporators and two condensers in laboratory and thermal vacuum tests. In addition, the MLHP was tested in the laboratory under five different configurations where the relative elevations and tilts among loop components were varied so as to investigate the gravity effects on the loop performance and to verify the analytical model’s capability to predict such effects. The MLHP performance tests that were simulated included start-up, high power, heat transport limit, and heat load sharing between the two evaporators. In all tests that were modeled, the LHP analytical model accurately predicted the steady state and transient behaviors of the LHP. Furthermore, the model was run-time efficient and yielded stable solutions in all cases.

Resumen
Abstract The condenser of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) nuclear power plant in China has many cooling tube leakage events, resulting in serious safety impact and economic loss. One of the main reasons is the fluidelastic instability caused by the large support plate spacing in half side operation. The corresponding calculation model is not given in the design specifications. Combined with the basic theory of cooling pipe vibration and comprehensively comparing different support plate spacing design and calculation methods, the mathematical model used in support plate spacing calculation in Heat Exchange Institute (HEI) standards is deduced. On this basis, the support plate spacing calculation model of condenser half side operation in PWR nuclear power plant is proposed. Based on a pressurized water reactor nuclear power project, the calculation and verification are carried out under four working conditions: Turbine Maximum Continuous Rating condition (TMCR), Winter Continuous Rating condition (WCR), Winter condenser half side operation condition (WHS) and Winter load shedding condition (WLS). In this project, the support plate spacing under winter condenser half side operation condition was 663.67mm, which is the most dangerous working condition under four working conditions. It is suggested that the final conservative support plate spacing should be determined according to the most stringent working conditions in the condenser support plate spacing design of nuclear power plant. Using the evaluation models of Alstom and Westhouse, the condenser support plate spacing of the PWR nuclear power plant project is checked and verified. The support plate spacing obtained by the mathematical model is relatively conservative and safe. The physical meaning of this method is clear and easy to use. It has certain guiding significance for the support plate spacing design of condensers in PWR nuclear power plants in China.

Resumen
Condenser is one of the key components in nuclear power plant with pressurized water reactor. It is important to control the dimension and weight in the design of condenser through optimization techniques. In this paper, a mathematic model of a two pass condenser is set up for Qinshan I condenser. Some modifications are made based on the original multi-objective algorithm, and the comparison between modified algorithm and the original one is conducted. Furthermore, the multi-objective optimization design of the condenser, taking minimization of the coolant flow-rate and net weight as objectives, is carried out considering thermohydraulic and geometric constraints through hybrid Pareto-sorting multi-objective genetic algorithm (HPSMOGA). The sensitivities of some parameters, which may influence the coolant flow-rate and the net weight of condenser, are also analyzed. The results show that the mathematical model is agreeable for the condenser. it is also shown that the proposed multi-objective optimal method is more effective in searching non-dominated solutions. the sensitivity analysis show that the tube outer diameter, tube pitch, coolant velocity and coolant temperature rising influence the coolant flow-rate and net weight of the condenser more than other variables. The corresponding results would provide guidance in the engineering design of this type of condenser.
