Texto completoIn this study, we describe a way to improve self-healing in metallized polypropylene (PP) films capacitors. A PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Depositon) thin nitride organosilicon (or SiNOCH) coating is deposited on the surface of the PP film just before the metallization with zinc. The low pressure and high density plasma is inductively coupled and the gas mixture is made with HMDSO (hexamethyldisiloxane) and N2. FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectrometry) measurements are leading to the characterization of the composition and the structure of the thin coatings, while OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy) provides information on the composition of the gaseous phase. Then, we have measured the current and voltage variations during self-healing and the size of the demetallized surface. Evidence has been made that a thin SiNOCH coating is useful since it allows to divide by a factor three the electrical energy needed for self-healing. In order to understand self-healing mechanisms, we analyzed the self-healed metallized polypropylene film surface by chemical imaging and spatially resolved XPS. The self-healing process leads to a cleared PP surface around the breakdown point. Moreover, a fraction of the coatings SiNOCH and Zn is deposited at the frontier between the cleared surface and the metallized surface

Texto completoWidely used, the metallized film capacitors are a common cause of electronic system failure. Some of their failures can lead to serious accidents and severe damage to their surroundings, such as explosions or fires. In addition to these safety issues, the failures analysis is justified by the economic issues related to the maintenance of these systems. The objective is to estimate the remaining useful lifetime and to prevent the sudden failures. Nowadays, the most used ageing laws require performing preliminary ageing tests to identify their parameters and enable their extrapolation. These parameters strongly depend on the series and the manufacturer of the capacitor itself. For these reasons, these ageing laws are costly to use and not robust. Other types of laws based on stochastic processes and related to failure mechanisms are emerging. However, their robustness and predictive capability need to be evaluated. Finally, even if measures are implemented to reduce the occurrence of catastrophic failures, risks persist. There is a need to prevent these types of failures without solely relying on the internal characteristics and the background of the capacitors. To address these issues, this work was carried out in collaboration with Schneider Electric as part of a CIFRE contract. Several accelerated ageing tests were carried out on a total of 111 capacitors from different manufacturers. The first test campaign focused on ageing under fixed conditions of alternating voltage and temperature, while the second added the additional constraint of humidity. Post-mortem analysis revealed that the different ageing campaigns led to the prevalence of a specific type of failure mechanism. The first campaign highlighted the effects of self-healing, and the second, those of corrosion. Based on these results, models of the capacitance evolution according to these two mechanisms were established. These were validated by the data in comparison to some existing laws. A first model based on the metallization resistance degradation due to self-healing effects was also proposed. Simultaneously, a large number of thermal runaways on capacitors were observed. Through real-time health indicator measurements, an in-depth study of the process was conducted. Early signs of thermal breakdown were identified. These results enable the early detection of thermal runaway and the implementation of damage prevention measures. Based on this principle, a generic method for preventing the risk of thermal breakdown was proposed. Its feasibility has been demonstrated and experimentally evaluated

Texto completoThis work is dedicated to the survey of the carbonated compounds and the composite films of supercondensateur to organic electrolyte. We have in a first time approached the carbonated compounds, main materials of the composite films. This materials has been characterized so much to the point of view of the morphology of the carbon skeleton that of the chemistry surface. The modifications of the functional groupings show the ominous impact of these groupings on the ageing of the component. The clarification of macroscopic original methods of characterization of the composite movies permitted to approach the influence of the parameters of realization on the properties of the films. Finally, the analysis of the competition situates the Batscap films and put in evidence the existence of a layer interfaces, gate to the diffusion of the ions, between the collector and the composite film

Texto completoWithin the three-dimensional (3D) integration associated with the use of an increasing amount of integrated circuits (ICs), there is strong need of high capacitance density (≥ 1 μF.cm-2) decoupling capacitors, able to operate on large frequency bandwidth, in order to reduce the noise that can compromise the signal integrity in ICs. The main challenge of these capacitors relies on the deposition of thin films (≤ 100 nm) using innovative materials with high relative permittivity (ε_r > 200 à 1 GHz) and «low cost» technologies compatible with large scale integration. On one hand, the proposed approach in this thesis benefits from the possibility of synthetizing – by the supercritical fluid technology – and using Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) nanoparticles (Ø = 16 ± 2 nm, ε_r = 260 at1 kHz) as dielectric material and on the other hand, from the use of spray coating as technique for the deposition of these materials as thin films. First of all, the BST nanoparticles synthesized are functionalized with specific ligands (3-aminopropylphosphonic acid, APA), in order to obtain colloidal suspensions composed by aggregates with size (Ø < 100 nm) showing few fluctuations during two months. The other function of ligands is to improve the adhesion of the deposited films (self-assembling) on the copper (Cu) substrate. Different solvent are studied for the preparation of the solutions : N-méthyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), water, methanol and ethanol. The variation of different parameters related to the solution and the deposition technique helped us to define the optimal conditions leading to different thickness of film (200 – 1000 nm) based on pristine (BST) and functionalized nanoparticles (BST-APA). Using ethanol instead of NMP as solvent, enabled us to prevent de formation of a copper oxide layer and organic residues. After deposition of aluminum pads (Al) on BST or BST-APA films and used as top electrode, the capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of capacitors with metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure enabled us to achieve high capacitance density (~ 0.7 μF.cm-2) and low leakage current (~ 25 μA.cm-2) at 1 V.Keywords: MIM capacitors, thin films, supercritical fluids, Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3, spray coating, nanofabrication in cleanroom

Texto completoThe rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) applications has led in an increased demand for energy storage devices. Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for high-speed applications due to their high-rate capabilities, long cycle life and environmental friendliness. However, the main challenge to be addressed for the widespread industrial use of MSCs is their relatively low energy density. To address this issue, various solutions have been explored to increase the capacitance or the cell voltage by playing with the electrolyte used, electrode materials and device topologies to achieve high-performance MSCs. This work focuses on the investigation of thin film electrode materials prepared by magnetron sputtering deposition. In particular, vanadium tungsten nitride (VWN) and ruthenium nitride (RuN) have been investigated as efficient pseudocapacitive electrode materials. This work was carried out in the frame of the CAMISOL project selected by the Lille university through the PEARL program (Program for EArly-stage Researchers in Lille) cofunded by the European Commission, where the motivation was to fabricate solid-state VN (or VWN) // RuN asymmetric micro-supercapacitors (AMSC). VWN thin films were synthesized using co-sputtering and nanolaminate approaches and demonstrated excellent performance challenging the best multicatonic materials reported for MSCs. Advanced characterization mapping techniques were used to explore the correlation between the structural, electrical, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of the films. This approach offers new perspectives and provides a powerful characterization tool for the next generation of electrochemical materials fabricated by thin film deposition methods at Lille University. In the following part of the thesis, RuN films were investigated as efficient electrode materials, and solid-state VN // RuN AMSC was presented as a proof of concept. Sputtering parameters were carefully optimized to maximize the film porosity while maintaining high electrical conductivity. Various advanced techniques were employed to reveal the complexity of the structure and charge storage mechanism of RuN films. Taking advantage from the complementary working window of VN and RuN films in a 1M KOH aqueous electrolyte, the cell voltage of the VN // RuN AMSC device was significantly increased, reaching up to 1.15 V. As a result, the VN // RuN AMSC exhibited one of the highest areal energy densities reported so far for AMSCs based on transition metal nitride thin films. Finally, the study of the use of solid-state electrolyte, PVA/KOH hydrogel electrolyte and ionic liquids in the fabrication of all-solid-state AMSCs was presented

Texto completoThe improvement of electronic systems for the deployment of all-electric aircrafts depends on the ability of passive components, such as capacitors, to reduce their volume, weight and cost, and to increase their performance and reliability, particularly in the aeronautical environment. In this context, the objective of this thesis was to study and develop novel capacitor technologies for avionics. In the first part of this work, the evaluation of power ceramic capacitors has been discussed. Indeed, the ceramic technology appeared to be one of the few mature solutions meeting the requirements of OEMs. The characterization, the failure mode, effects and criticality analysis (FMECA) and reliability and robustness assessment of commercial components using original architectures (multi-chip capacitors) have been performed. These results have been completed by a more advanced study on the characterization of new ceramics sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The colossal permittivity of these materials could allow to increase reliability and miniaturization of capacitors while maintaining high values of capacitance and voltage rating. The second part, more fundamental, is devoted to the development of core-shell ceramic/polymer nanoparticles for embedded capacitors operating at radiofrequencies. The synthesis and the physicochemical characterization of the nanocomposites as well as the manufacturing processes of the thick film capacitors are first described. A new broadband electrical characterization methodology has been developed to analyze the dielectric properties and the conduction mechanisms of the nanoparticles. The effects of the temperature and the manufacturing process on the device performance have been investigated. In addition, the durability was evaluated

Texto completoThis research investigates the use of hafnium oxide (HfO2)-based thin films in nanocapacitors, focusing on both their linear and non-linear electrical properties to meet the growing demands of high-performance and miniaturized electronic devices. Starting with the fundamental physics of energy storage capacitors, the investigation highlights the essential characteristics of effective dielectric materials, such as a high dielectric constant and a substantial band gap. Hafnium-based materials are particularly promising due to their compatibility with Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), which allows for precise and uniform thin-film deposition—crucial for ensuring reliable performance in electronic devices. To understand the potential of these materials, various fabrication and characterization techniques were employed. This includes specific deposition processes to create the thin films and morphological tests to study the physical structure of the capacitors. Electrical testing plays a key role in evaluating critical parameters like dielectric constant, breakdown voltage, and overall energy storage capacity. By analyzing these factors, a comprehensive view of how both linear and non-linear hafnium-based dielectrics perform is provided. When exploring linear, amorphous hafnium-based dielectrics, HfO2 is combined with aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide to enhance dielectric properties. Different configurations, such as nanolaminates and solid solutions, are tested to find the optimal balance. The goal is to achieve materials that maintain a high dielectric constant and resist voltage breakdown, thereby improving their ability to store energy efficiently. On the other hand, a detailed look into non-linear, crystalline dielectrics examines the effects of doping hafnium oxide with elements like zirconia and silicon. Different deposition and annealing temperatures are assessed for their impact on crystalline structure and polarization behavior, revealing complex ferroelectric and antiferroelectric behaviors that could offer high energy density and stability. The findings suggest that while ferroelectric materials might not be suitable for applications requiring linear capacitance due to their sensitivity to voltage variations, antiferroelectric materials show promise. However, they still face challenges related to electrical efficiency and thermal management. Finding materials that can effectively stabilize voltage variations is crucial, as capacitors are increasingly used to manage these fluctuations in modern electronics.A significant challenge identified is the variability in the dielectric constant, which can limit the use of these materials in applications demanding stable capacitance, such as signal filtering. To address this issue, solid solutions and laminated materials, which provide consistent linear capacitance, are prioritized. Although these materials are effective up to a certain permittivity threshold, exploring non-linear phases opens the door to potentially higher performance under specific conditions. In summary, understanding of HfO2-based thin films and their role in nanocapacitors is advanced by this research. By examining both linear and non-linear dielectric materials, insights into how to optimize fabrication techniques and material compositions to improve dielectric properties are provided. Ongoing research into issues like material endurance, electrical efficiency, and thermal management is essential for developing reliable and high-performing capacitors that meet the evolving demands of modern electronic technologies

Texto completoThis PhD work is about integration of BaxSr1-xTiO3 (BST) based tunable capacitors, in order to perform radiofrequency reconfigurable devices for cell phone antennas. The main industrial goal is to obtain capacitors with a high tunability, low dielectric losses and low leakage currents, by playing on the chemical composition of the material and by controlling the oxygen vacancy related defect chemistry. The strategy addressed in this study to reach this objective is doping the BST by Mn in substitution of Ti or by adding Cu. A full study of each case of doping, performed on both ceramics and thin films synthesized from the same sol-gel solutions, revealed different improvement mechanisms of the dielectric and electrical properties of the material according to the type of doping. The complementarity of the two doping ways has led us to investigate codoping of BST thin films. An original architecture of heterogeneous codoping has been set up, allowing to combine the benefits of each doping way and to closely meet the industrial specifications

Texto completoThe aim of this work is to understand and predict the warpage of silicon wafers during the fabrication process of PTIC microelectronic components. The warpages are partially responsible for several productivity problems. This study is done by coupling analytical calculation, finite element modeling and experimentation. The mechanical characterization of thin films constituting the multi-layered stack has been carried out by an experimental method nanoindentation with the help of a finite element model. The intrinsic stress in the thin films has been determined by coupling measurements of the wafer warpage and a finite element model. The obtained Young’s modulus and intrinsic stress are used to feed the database for calculating the wafer warpage by analytical and numerical approaches. The complexity of the structures (thousands of components in the wafer) required the use of homogenized models to calculate the wafer warpage. These results obtained allow the prediction of the wafer-level warpage in order to optimize the fabrication process flow and therefore reduce the risk of the mechanical problem
