Mixed anions compounds may allow to reach structures and properties inaccessible in the case of single anion phases, which provide great opportunities for exploratory research of functional mixed anions compounds. One major interest of mixing anions in a phase is the band gap engineering by controlling the contribution of anionic orbitals at the top of the valence band, hence controlling the electronic structure and the properties. In addition, heteroleptic environments around a cation (directly surrounded by at least two types of anions) makes it possible to accentuate the acentric character of a structural entity, and therefore the polarity in the case of a polar arrangement comparing to a mono-anionic analogue. These two aspects combined, i.e. band gap engineering and local acentric character both reached with multiple anions, are powerful to control and exacerbate various properties. With the aim to reach such environments in innovative mixed anion phases and study their physical and chemical properties, several series of potential materials were formulated based on interesting mixed anion building blocks and their synthesis attempted. In this work, a wide variety of new systems are presented, including some unusual environments and properties: Non-linear optical properties, magnetic properties and photoelectric properties . Among these compounds, a large series of new compounds, including Ba5(VO2S2)2(S2)2, characterized by heteroleptic thiovanadates (VO2S2, VO3S, VOS3) and the presence of dichalcogenide pairs are described. From those building blocks, our strategy to reach polar phases was successful with one of those compounds showing interesting non-linear optical properties (SHG). Also, a series of versatile halide-thiovanadates phases (halide= F, Cl and I) could also be developed and proves the appearance of a photoelectric current under visible light. In addition, their calculated bands alignment with respect to H2 and O2 evolution reactions makes them potential candidates for photocatalysis of water-splitting under visible light. On another hand, the first Fresnoite oxysulfide (polar) with SHG properties is also presented. Finally, magnetic phases were also developed like the non-centrosymmetric Ba10Fe7.75Zn5.25S18Si3O12, with (Fe/Zn)3O mixed anion tetrahedra involved in an original large magnetic cluster as elementary block. Those series of compounds are discussed with combination of DFT calculations in order to deliver a comprehension of their structure-properties relationships to help further design functional mixed anion materials

We present a contribution to the study of structural, electronic and magnetic propertiesof multiferroic compounds. These materials – characterized by the coexistence and coupling of different types of long-range orders, such as magnetic and ferroelectic – have recently become a subject of great importance because of their academic interest and their significance for potential applications. In this context we have studied the two compounds GaFeO₃ and LuFe₂O₄. The study involved the use of several techniques : electronic spin resonance (ESR), magnetic measurements by magnetometry and infrared spectroscopy (IR).Local and macroscopic magnetic measurements reveal an anomalous paramagnetic phase in GaFeO3. This is attributed to the existence of short-range magnetic correlations in a wide temperature range above the ordering temperature. On the other hand, the analysis of IR phonon spectra recorded at different temperatures (10 ≤ T ≤ 1000 K) shows that the ordering of magnetic moments does not affect the structural properties of GaFeO₃ For LuFe₂O₄, conversely, the magnetic degrees of freedom are coupled to the structural properties via the charge ordering of Fe³+/Fe²+ ions, as suggested by ESR and IR spectroscopy

This thesis is devoted to the study of excitonic trions in bidimensional semiconductors (S. C. ). These quasi-particles can be the result, assuming some conditions, of the binding of an exciton and an electron or a hole in semiconductors. They differ from others excitonic "complexes" by their charge and mobility winch allow some original properties, especially in quasi-bidimensional semiconductors (S. C. Superlattices, quantum wells). The study of excitonic trions is of great interest for theory as well as for experiment. It allows the understanding of "radiative" recombination mechanisms winch control some devices in optoelectonic or telecommunication. This study also provides to fundamental physics new models for systems containing few particles. This work allows to point out that, in the absence of magnetic field, these quasi-particles are much more stable in bidimensional S. C. That in 3D S. C. . Therefore, their observation should be easier in 2D media. Moreover room temperature studies may become possible for such quasi-particles. We have shown that the absorption line shape differs from that of excitons or other localized excitonic complexes. Their identification is therefore easier. We have shown that the influence of a magnetic field on trions leads to an increasing and additional quantifization of the S. C. Surface on the quantifization degree. This quantifization is total with a magnetic field perpendicular to plane and minimal with the field parallel to plane. For a weak enough magnetic field, the trions behave as free and charged quasi-particles. In this case, the magnetic field gives rises to landau levels as in 3D S. C. . With a perpendicular magnetic field, the magnetoabsorption reduces to Dirac peaks. However, with a parallel field, there appears a series of lines decreasing in the low energy region below a main absorption edge. Our results are original and specific to excitonic trions. They can help in proving the occurence and the identification of these quasi-particles in quasi-bidimensional media (super lattices S. C. And quantum wells)

Coordination chemistry of transition metals gives an access to numerous molecular magnetic materials that exhibit varied properties. During this work, several ligands with intrinsic properties have been chosen and their chemistry has been developed in order to get specific magnetic behavior. Solvothermal syntheses allowed the characterization of several complexes based on macrocycles. Two dinuclear CoII and FeIII complexes were isolated. Their molecular structures are built from metal ions located like in a "sandwich" between two calixarenes units. These complexes considered as molecular starting blocks were used for the synthesis of clusters with higher nuclearity. An original complex associating six CoII ions has been then isolated. The complexation of Schiff base ligands resulting from the condensation of the acetylacetone with various amino acids has been performed. From one of these original ligands, an almost perfect triangular trinuclear CuII complex has been then isolated and fully characterized. Ab initio calculations have been carried out in order to explain its magnetic properties. Finally, the complexation of β-diketone based ligands with various metals was explored. It has been then possible to control the nuclearity of molecular buildings block. The use of a preformed brick (cubane type) gave an access to a heptanuclear NiII complex. This latter presents the characteristics of a single molecule magnet. The last stage of these researches was to modify the steric effect of these β-diketone ligands in order to control the final cluster size. Three families of polynuclear 4f complexes (Ln5, Ln8 and Ln9) were obtained. Structural, magnetic studies and detailed analysis of the spectroscopic characteristics of these europium(III) complexes were achieved. A completely original work has been carried out on Y9 clusters doped with Eu (Y9-xEux) by linking molecular structures with luminescence properties

This thesis is dedicated to the development of new magnetic semiconductor materials for applications in the field of spintronics. The ultimate goal is to transform an insulating magnetic oxide into semiconductor while preserving its magnetic properties. In the present work it is shown that turning material stoichiometry, it is possible to create oxygen or cation vacancies in material which result in a change of carriers type into "n" or "p". Non-stoichiometric thin films are prepared by pulsed laser deposition. This thesis summarises research on three materials with different properties: (i) study in-situ and without contact of the optical and electric properties of lanthanum nikelate LaNiO3±δ (LNO), used as a basic electrode to investigate the electric properties in insulating or semiconductor magnetic films; (ii) study of the influence of the oxygen pressure variation on the physical properties of the yttrium iron garnet Y3Fe5O12±δ (YIG) and of the yttrium iron orthoferrite YFeO3±δ (YFO). The latter was also doped by Zr and Cu to realize a magnetic semiconductor of "n" and "p" type respectively

Our group has recently developed an organometallic synthetic approach for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles with controlled size and shape. The aim of this thesis is to generalise this method to other metal oxide nanoparticles with a size smaller than 5 nm. This work deals with the synthesis and the study of metal-oxide nanoparticles exhibiting either luminescent (ZnO) or magnetic properties (Gamma-Fe2O3, Co3O4, CoFe2O4, FeO or CoO). In the first part of this thesis, we show that adding an organolithium precursor during the ZnO nanoparticles synthesis modifies their growth mechanism. Therefore, the size of the particles is directly related to the amount of the organolithium precursor and varies from 2. 5 to 4. 3 nm. In this way, colloidal solutions and nanoparticles in the solid state are obtained which display a luminescence in the visible range from yellow to blue through white. In the second part, we show the generalisation of this approach to magnetic nanoparticles such as Gamma-Fe2O3 and CoFe2O4. We show therefore the variation of the interactions between the particles depending on the experimental conditions. Finally, we show that we can also adapt this approach to the synthesis of unstable phases such as FeO and CoO. The last part of this manuscript deals with the synthesis of metallic particles (Fe, Co, Zn) using an amine-borane complex as reducing agent of our organometallic complexes

One of the primary challenges concerns the discovery of novel inorganic compounds using a rational “design” in order to predict crystal structures and possible structure/properties relationships. In the absence of unified protocol for such a task, it remains a hot topic in the solid state chemistry community. At the UCCS, our group has a long experience and a strong “savoir-faire” related to the elaboration and characterization on new bismuth based compounds. Recently, a strategy to Design novel innovative compounds and/or establish bases for related mega-series of related compounds have been developed for these broad series compounds by our group. Results are such as a large family of compounds with related crystal structures have been understood in terms of building principles leading to the post prediction, preparation and characterization of novel members. In the chemical Bi2O3 – MO - P2O5 (M = various divalent metals) systems, at the origin of this work, these predictions have been feasible because versatile building units (BU) can be handled, modified and assembled in various manners. The key-description used for BUs rely on the anion-centered polyhedra theory related to the bismuth atom. Thus, in the framework of ANR Multi-D InMaDe we have explored the Bi/M/X/O system, where M = Cu, Co, Mn etc. and X = P, V, As, Mo, Se and Cl. Several new compounds with new topologies have been obtained and their corresponding properties have been measured

The thesis has been the subject of an experimental and theoretical study on the large band gap semiconductors with a cubic structure. This work deals with a numerical study only on the B-V compounds and the ZnxCd1-xSe and ZnSe1-xTex alloys for which we employed the virtual crystal approximation provided with the ABINIT program. In the case of β-SiC, we made a comparative study between the numerical results obtained from ab-initio calculation using ABINIT or Wien2k within the Density Functional Theory framework with either Local Density Approximation or Generalized Gradient Approximation for the atomic potentials, and the experimental results obtained in the LPSM laboratory (Paris13, France). The experiments were carried out with the optical spectroscopy methods: Brillouin light scattering, Raman scattering and VIS-IR reflectometry. The physical properties studied are: the second and third order elastic constants, the phonons at the (Γ) point, the permittivity and photoelastic tensors in the VIS-IR range. The variation of the elastic constants is also numerically studied and the phase transformations are discussed in relation to the mechanical stability criteria

Various mixed Co/Rh and Co/Pt systems from the macroscopic surface and bulk alloys down to the small nanoclusters have been studied within the density functional theory. Co atoms generally induces significantly enhanced magnetic moments at their 4d/5d neighbors, while they retain their magnetic moment even in an highly mixed environment, leading to substantial average moments in good agreement with earlier experiments. The respective influences of alloying and reduced coordination effects are discussed. Emphasis is given to the determination of the strong interplay between structure, chemical order and magnetic properties. The oscillating RKKY-like character of the Co-induced moments, combined to their significant enhancement at the surface, leads to a particularly complex magnetic pattern. The Co doping effect appears to be the most efficient for large, low-magnetic 4d/5d particles, even if in this case small antiparallel induced moments may slightly moderate the magnetic enhancement

InGaN/GaN quantum wells show the highest known emission efficiency in UV-blue and the current challenge is to push to longer wavelengths. This would be possible by increasing the indium composition but the challenge becomes how to handle the resulting strains. This work has combined transmission electron microscopy and Xray diffraction in order to determine the relaxation rates, the local chemical composition and defects formation in these systems. The results show that there are no composition fluctuations in these InGaN layers where the indium content was around 20%. Therefore, the differences in emission may be explained by the changes in quantum wells thicknesses and/or the presence of defects. Indeed, several types of defects have been observed and characterized, such as pinholes or planar defect domains. For InGaN/GaN quantum wells with strain compensating AlGaN layers, Xray diffraction showed that, when the AlGaN layer thickness increases, keeping constant the spacing between InGaN layers (around 16-17 nm), the quantum wellsare totally strained in and out the growth plan. Using transmission electron microscopy, it is shown that the relaxation occurs through the formation of domains as well as a type dislocations. The dislocations propagate from the quantum well tothe surface and the density of the defects increases with the thickness of the AlGaN layers

In recent years, ternary QDs have experienced an exponential development thanks to their properties, especially their photoluminescence, which can be controlled not only by their size but also by their composition. As part of this thesis, we developed a new "green" synthesis in aqueous media of ZnSeS-doped ternary QDs and we studied the effect of the variation of the dopant (Mn2+, Cu2+, or Cu2+/Al3+) as well as its localization (in the core or in the shell) on their optical and structural properties. The first part of this work describes the synthesis of ZnSeS:Mn ternary QDs and ZnSeS:Mn/ZnS core/shell using 2-MPA as a ligand. The results obtained show that these nanocrystals can be prepared with quantum yields of 22% and 41%, respectively. These QDs have shown excellent photostability under UV irradiation and can easily be transferred to the organic phase using the hydrophobic octanethiol ligand without altering their optical properties. Subsequently, core/shell ZnSeS/ZnS:Cu/ZnS QDs for which the Cu dopant is introduced into the first shell were prepared using 3-MPA as a ligand. Excellent (photo)stability in the presence of air and oxygen was observed. ZnSeS/ZnS:Cu/ZnS core/shell QDs have a 20% photoluminescence quantum yield and have been used as photoluminescent probes for the detection of Pb2+ ions in aqueous media. A selective extinction of the photoluminescence emission in the presence of Pb2+ ions was observed. Finally, Cu and Al co-doped QDs, ZnSeS/ZnS:Cu/ZnS:Al/ZnS (first shell doped with Cu2+ and second shell doped with Al3+) were prepared. Co-doping allows the improvement of the optical properties, including quantum efficiency (up to 32%) as well as the photoluminescence lifetime of Cu-doped QDs
