dimensional finite element analyses are carried out and the results of these analyses are compared both with each other and with the results presented by Reul &
Randolph (2004). The material parameters used in the analysis are selected mainly referring to the previous studies cited above on the same subject and slight modifications are made for convenience in the analysis. The analysis method and the applied pile configurations and load levels are directly taken from the reference study, excluding the soil model employed. A drained Mohr &ndash
Coulomb failure criteria is employed in the analysis of this study in modeling the soil instead of an elastoplastic model which was used in the analysis of the reference study. The results are evaluated for the average and differential settlements of the foundations and it is seen that
although the average and differential settlements calculated in this study are not always very close to the values calculated in the reference study, the calculated settlement reduction factors due to piles (especially for the average settlements) compared well with the findings of the reference study for all pile configurations and load levels considered. Based on this, a new approach is suggested to estimate the average settlements of the piled raft foundations. Moreover, correction factors are recommended in order to estimate the average settlements of the piled rafts by directly using the programs employed throughout the thesis.

Texto completoNatural Language Understanding (NLU) has been one of the longest-running and the most challenging areas in artificial intelligence. For any natural language comprehension system having a basic understanding of entities and concepts is a primary requirement. Comparison, where we name the similarities and differences between entities and concepts, is a unique cognitive ability in humans which requires memorizing facts, experiencing things and integration of concepts of the world. Clearly, developing NLU systems that are capable of comprehending comparison is a crucial step forward in AI. In this thesis, I will present my research on developing systems that are capable of comprehending comparison, through which, systems can learn world knowledge and perform basic commonsense reasoning.

Texto completoHow mental representations are constructed and how they evolve are central problems for cognitive science. Representation decisions help determine what computations are hard or easy. Structured, relational representations are a hallmark of human cognition. Developmental studies show that children do not perform as well as adults in tasks that require noticing relational similarity. What drives this development? Gentner and her colleagues have argued that comparison and language are two forces driving this change. This thesis explores these ideas further by presenting a computational model of forced choice tasks to illuminate the roles of comparison and language in driving representational change.
The model simulates the following roles of comparison. First, comparison can be used to make selections in forced-choice tasks. Second, comparisons from recent positive experiences are assimilated as interim generalizations which are retrieved for subsequent tasks and influence encoding by highlighting relevant structure. Third, comparisons suggest opportunities for re-representation. Finally, verifying candidate inferences resulting from a comparison provides a way to augment encodings with background knowledge, thus enriching representations. The model simulates the role of language in facilitating the creation and enrichment of generalizations as follows. When two objects are given the same label, the model compares them. This leads to an interim generalization associated with that label, enriched with commonalities from background knowledge.
We tested these hypotheses by extending the Companion cognitive architecture and simulating three developmental studies. To reduce tailorability, the visual stimuli were provided as sketches and the objects were labeled using simplified English. The model was evaluated by comparing its behavior and learning trajectory to that of children in the developmental studies. The performance of the model in the simulations provide evidence for the claims of this thesis.

Texto completoThe purpose of this study is to aide web developers in choosing which component library to integrate with their web based Angular project. Angular is a new platform and many of the existing component libraries are still under active development, or were only recently released, making it difficult for developers to know which component library would be the best fit for their project. This study reviews many factors which would influence a developer’s decision on which library to use including: the size of the community, number of components available, quality of documentation, payload size increase, and load time performance. This study proves that the most popular projects aren’t the most performant and are lacking key features, while some much less popular libraries are performing better and have a better set of components. Developers looking for the best combination of performance and features should consider ngx-bootstrap or Angular Material Design Lite.

Texto completoIn robot navigation, and image content searches reliable salient features are of pivotal importance. Also in biometric human recognition, salient features are increasingly used.
Regardless the application, image matching is one of the many problems in computer
vision, including object recognition.
This report investigates some salient features to match sub-images of different images.
An underlying assumption is that sub-images, also called image objects, or objects, are
possible to recognize by the salient features that can be recognized independently.
Since image objects are images of 3D objects, the salient features in 2D images must be
invariant to reasonably large viewing direction and distance (scale) changes. These
changes are typically due to 3D rotations and translations of the 3D object with respect to
the camera. Other changes that influence the matching of two 2D image objects is
illumination changes, and image acquisition noise.
This thesis will discuss how to find the salient features and will compare them with
respect to their matching performance. Also it will explore how these features are
invariant to rotation and scaling.

Texto completoVariability in complex systems offering rich set of features is a seriouschallenge to their users in term of flexibility with many possible variants fordifferent application contexts and maintainability. During the long period oftime, much effort has been made to deal with these issues. An effort in thisregard is developing and implementing different variability modelingtechniques. This thesis argues the explanation of three modeling techniques namedconfigurable components, feature models and function-means trees. The maincontribution to the research includes:• A comparison of above mentioned variability modeling techniques in asystematic way,• An attempt to find the integration possibilities of these modelingtechniques based on literature review, case studies, comparison, discussions, and brainstorming. The comparison is based on three case studies each of which is implemented inall above mentioned three modeling techniques and a set of generic aspects ofthese techniques which are further divided into characteristics. At the end, acomprehensive discussion on the comparison is presented and in final sectionsome integration possibility are proposed on the basis of case studies, characteristics, commonalities and experience gained through theimplementation of case studies and literature review.

Gutzmann, Tobias. "Comparison of Points-to Analyses". Thesis, Växjö University, School of Mathematics and Systems Engineering, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:vxu:diva-2401.
Texto completoPoints-to analysis is a static program analysis which computes possible reference relations between different parts of a program. It serves as input to many high-level analyses. Points-to analyses differ, among others, in flow- and context-sensitivity, program representation, and object abstraction. Most program representations used for points-to analysis are sparse representations which abstract from, e.g., primitive data types and intra-procedural control-flow. Thus, a certain degree of information is sacrificed for compact program representation, which results in scalable performance. In this thesis, we present a framework which allows building different versions of Points-to SSA (P2SSA), a sparse, Memory SSA based program representation. Distinct instantiations of P2SSA contain different levels of abstraction from a program's full representation. We present another framework which allows running Points-to analyses on these program representations. We use these two frameworks to instantiate different versions of P2SSA and compare them in terms of analysis precision and execution time.

perception of language learning strategies (LLSs). Three psycho-social variables regarding the teachers&rsquo
use of strategy instruction at BaSkent University were considered: 1. Level of awareness of language learning strategies 2. Beliefs in the effectiveness of language learning strategies 3. Ease of strategy instruction. These results were compared with the students&rsquo
reported use of LLSs to increase our awareness of students&rsquo
strategy use and needs so that teachers would be able to help learners facing problems in learning English. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative research tools. The relevant data were obtained by means of two questionnaires: a teacher and a student version of Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL, Oxford, 1990), and a semistructured interview. A total of 70 teachers teaching at the English language department of BaSkent University and 100 students studying in the same department were involved in the study. Data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively by employing descriptive statistics, such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Content analysis was performed to analyze the interview data. v The results of the study suggest that for most of the items in the strategy inventory, if the teachers are aware of learning strategies, believe in the effectiveness of LLSs instruction and find them easy to apply in the classroom, they may use them more often in their classes. Furthermore, in variance analysis, the only variable that made a difference in teachers&rsquo
perceptions of LLSs was found to be the level of education, Finally, when the teachers&rsquo
and students&rsquo
frequency of LLSs use was compared, it was found out that teachers reported a higher frequency of LLSs use than their learners. However, there was a great similarity between the two parties in terms of frequency of strategy use in the most and least preferred strategy categories. It is essential to find the reasons for the difference in the frequency of LLSs among the two parties before planning a LLSs training.

Texto completos philosophical studies, who is an extraordinary name of the Western Philosophy in the 20th century. The history and sources of Zen Buddhism were given with its adoption in the use of language and arts. Besides, this study exemplifies the philosophy of Zen Buddhism with the examples from the life story of Wittgenstein. The thesis is written with a full awareness of the sensitivity of comparing different systems which always embody counterexamples and speculations. This is the reason why speculative ideas and resources were deliberately ignored. The aim is to contribute the cultural life of Turkey by taking such a subject to the academic milieu. Moreover, Turkey is the passage of the East and the West both geographically and culturally. There are resemblances between Zen and Wittgenstein by means of method and the useof language. Furthermore, it was given the names of the books that Wittgenstein read and the philosophers who influenced Wittgenstein. The parallels between Zen and Wittgenstein are justified.

Texto completoA widely used access control mechanism is the password. Passwords are normally composed of a meaningful detail, such as a name of a person or a sequence of numbers such as birthdate. Any person attempting to gain unauthorized access to a system might need only to look at a personnel record or associate with the person holding the desired password in order to discover the password. Therefore, there is a compromise between user memorability and security of a system. Exploration into other methods of user authentication and access control is desired to discover a better alternative to the traditional password system. The alternative are system-generated passwords, pronounceable passwords, passphrases, cognitive passwords and authentication by word association. These methods are discussed and examined. The results from this study show that cognitive passwords and authentication by word association are superior to other methods in access control.

Texto completoData integrity in computer based information systems is a concern because of the damage that can be done by unauthorized manipulation or modification of data. While a standard exists for data security, there currently is not an acceptable standard for integrity. There is a need for incorporation of a data integrity policy into the standard concerning data security in order to produce a complete protection policy. There are several existing models which address data integrity. The Biba, Goguen and Meseguer, and Clark/Wilson data integrity models each offer a definition of data integrity and introduce their own mechanisms for preserving integrity. Acceptance of one of these models as a standard for data integrity will create a complete protection policy which addresses both security and integrity.
