Resumen
The relationship between literature and social networking sites (SNS) is a material context in which authors and readers merge into each other to create a literary communicative process that transforms contemporary politics. The aim of this paper is to analyse the communicative process by investigating the continuum between matter and discourse from a new materialist approach. From social sites, we can understand how elements, such as readers, authors, context, novels, culture and digital platforms, “intra-act” (Barad 2007) to create an affecting/ed communicative process. We propose feminist new materialism as a theoretical terrain that helps to reconfigure politics and communication in order to build a methodological framework for contemporary feminist politics and theory related to Literature. Using a digital genealogy and the theory of new materialism, we identify communication in literature as a trapping force in which different elements intra-act with each other and become indivisible. Affecting/ed communication is a dynamic conceptualization, a literary activity in which active agents participate in creative spaces for future social changes.

Resumen
Far from being restricted to exchanges between experts, specialised knowledge is mediated to audiences with different levels of specialization, from scientific reviews to newspaper articles. This diversity constitutes an often-overlooked challenge for translators. As a matter of fact, while documentation and terminology are always crucial, translation decisions are based on communicative parameters as well as cognitive and linguistic criteria. Although it is self-evident that linguistic choices are determined by the proficiency level of the readership, few authors have attempted to specify what those choices are and how the correlation operates, most notably in popularization discourse, and none of them has considered potential differences between languages and cultural settings. The focus of the paper is a bilingual (French and Spanish) corpus study carried out on newspaper articles dealing with stem cell research and cloning published in four different geographic regions (France, Quebec, Spain, Argentina). An original methodology was implemented for data collection and analysis. The number and nature of expressions used to convey each concept were then analyzed. Discursive strategies widely assumed to be a hallmark of popularization, like definitions and explanations, were also taken into account. Indices of metaphorical conceptualization and the underlying modes of conceptualization were identified. This study provides concrete data to a debate that remains largely theoretical, and supports the conception of specialized communication as a continuum. The results go against well-established ideas about popularized texts, specially regarding the trademark status of “didactic features.” It seems imperative to acknowledge the heterogeneity of popularization and to consider the role of textual genre constraints in the way specialized knowledge is introduced. Furthermore, the data obtained seems to substantiate the recent questioning of the canonical view of popularization as a mere translation.

Resumen
The paper discusses the differences between intracultural communication and intercultural communication from a socio-cognitive perspective that treats this relationship as a continuum rather than a dichotomy. Movement on the continuum, and differences between the two phenomena are affected by different factors that will be discussed in the paper. The hypothetical left end of the continuum is intracultural communication and the right end is intercultural communication. Neither exists in pure form. The question is to which end a given communicative situation is closer to and what characteristics it is dominated by. While moving on toward the right end communication becomes less dependent on standards, norms, frames, core common ground and formulaic language and is characterized more by emergent common ground, ad hoc generated rather than formulaic expressions, norm creating attempts and individual creativity in solving communication problems.

Resumen
Silence in human communication has not only been marginalized as a means of communication, but has often been considered as void of serving any communicative role. It is presumptuously viewed as the mere opposite of communication occurring at the far end of the communicative continuum. Investigating the role of silence in human communication from a linguistic point of view, this paper, hence, attempts to show that such conventional view of silence as a non-communicative tool should be reconsidered. It argues that both silence and speech make an integral part of human communication as they coincide in any delivered message. The context in which they serve a communicative function plays a major role in their use, the choice of one over the other, as well as the interpretation of any delivered message. The study also argues that speech and silence do not always fall into the traditional schematic classification of vocal versus non-vocal. While silence can be vocal in some occasions in human communication, speech can be expressed non-vocally too.

Resumen
In his theory of interpretation, Peirce’s attention is drawn to the work of “mind,” especially its appropriation of signs. Mind interprets nature by using signs in every form of inquiry. Based on his three categories, Peirce defines interpretation as a determinate process of interpretations of interpretations. Communicative process thus means, instead of just being determined as an interpretant by an object, that the interpreter is determined by a “communicative effort.” In the communicative effort, for Peirce, temporal unit is the necessary condition of meaning. In other words, in order to mean something, the communicative effort has to be performed in a continuum from a past to a future. Concealed possibilities can be actualized when the continuum is “broken,” genuinely divided. Peirce truly acknowledges that the possibility can be actualized when it is broken into parts.

Resumen
Abstract In this thematic volume we ask how digitalization and mediatization are transforming public communication and its conceptual understanding. This introductory text delves into the historical shift from oral and body media to written media in societal communication, highlighting the evolution through telecommunication mass media to the replacement of analog communication by digital forms. It addresses the lack of consensus on the definition of ‘publics’ and public communication, underscoring the multidimensional, heterogeneous, and fluid nature of these concepts. We ask how digitalization and mediatization processes raise questions about fundamental changes in publics due to new technological-communicative possibilities. Furthermore, we discuss the concept of publics as communicatively constructed and maintained, shaped by media and community ideologies. We propose a continuum model for digital/digitized publics, ranging from dyadic communication to multi-party communication. It emphasizes four key aspects for linguistic engagement with digital publics: communicative construction, technical and social affordances, multiplicity of addressing, and practices of digital community formation. With this model and the contributions following the introduction we contribute to a nuanced understanding of digital publics, considering their scale, complexity, and the dynamics of content creation and audience interaction.

Resumen
A constructivist grounded theory of family distancing emerged from the narrative accounts of 52 adult children in the process of estrangement from their parents. The grounded theory conceptualizes estrangement as a continuum comprised of eight components: (1) communication quality, (2) communication quantity, (3) physical distance, (4) presence/absence of emotion, (5) positive/negative affect, (6) reconciliation/desire to be a family, (7) role reciprocity, and (8) legal action. In addition, 10 communicative behaviors are identified that can help family members move along the estrangement continuum toward greater distance or maintain their position. Together they interplay to constitute a holistic picture of the estrangement process. Scholarly uses, theoretical implications, and practical applications will be discussed.

Resumen
The article deals with the current trends in the field of linguistic categorization of emotions. The emotional spectrum is much wider than the experiences that possess stable verbal explications. Fuzzy emotions include mixed, blended, complex, and other emotional experiences. They are primary, but they have never been subjected to independent linguistic research. This article focuses on the cultural particularities of emotions that reflect the ability of language consciousness to actualize the boundless emotional and semantic potential of the word to express the inner world. The research relied on the National Corpus of the Russian language to describe the process of creating emotional endoconcepts, i.e., emotional experiences that go beyond the traditional classification of emotive words. The authors believe that the controversial nature of the basic emotional paradigm is argued by the class of emotive words formed from basic emotions, e.g., sad emotions. Their dominant remains fuzzy, and only the evaluative meaning is clear. The approach that the linguistics of emotions adopts to categorize emotive words has a number of advantages because it takes into account the poly-ambivalence, discursivity, and flexibility of emotions that depend on the communicative situation.

Resumen
This paper attempts to define a culture-specific communicative style which I call communicative ethno-style and determine the factors which lead to its formation. While defining communicative ethno-style some generalizations are unavoidable and reference is made to a typical user of standard language and his/her communicative behaviour in interpersonal interaction in everyday situations. At the same time it is not possible to take a dichotomous approach in describing the communicative styles as they form a continuum and need to be viewed in comparison. In this paper I demarcate the dominant features of Russian communicative style as opposed to British and emphasize the importance of a systemized description of culture specific communicative differences through communicative ethno-styles. This is important for developing pragmatic and discourse competence necessary for intercultural communication. The study is based on empirical data obtained through questionnaires, interviews and observations and follows contextual, pragmatic, discourse analyses. The theoretical framework is based on Politeness Theory (Brown and Levinson, 1987; Leech, 1983, 2005; Watts, 2003), Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969) and the Theory of Cultural Scripts (Wierzbicka, 1991/2003, 2002, 2006).

Resumen
Enhancing students’ communicative competence is crucial in teaching speaking in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) classrooms. While relating elements focusing on curriculum, materials, and teachers pay attention to developing the students’ communicative competence, obstacles hinder students’ communicative skill development. This mixed-methods study aimed to analyze the communicative level of the speaking tasks presented in the teaching materials and how teachers used these tasks to enhance communicative competence. It also investigated teachers’ perceived difficulties in teaching speaking in the classroom. The participants were three 11th grade teachers and 54 students from three schools in the southern border area of Thailand. Data collected from speaking task analysis and classroom observation were analyzed based on Littlewood’s communicative continuum, and a semi-structured interview was analyzed with an inductive approach. This in-depth information illustrates the communicative level presented in the teaching materials and observed in the classroom, along with obstacles encountered. The findings showed that teacher-made teaching materials mainly focused on forms, while commercial textbooks explored forms and meaning-focused in Littlewood’s communicative continuum. However, how teachers used the tasks did not always correspond to the original design presented through teaching materials. Many perceived difficulties in teaching English speaking were found, these include time limitations, students’ English proficiency level, teachers’ attitude toward the tasks, a lack of school facilities, and exam-oriented teaching and learning. The results of this study are expected to be a consideration for material developers in designing speaking tasks and for English teachers in engaging their students with communicative speaking activities.

Resumen
The result of bibliographic and field research was the confirmation of the hypothesis that the effectiveness of the professional activity of the future prosecutor’s worker is determined by active and competent participation in the anthropic process of comprehending the specifics of professional communications already at the stage of obtaining professional education. The authors consistently present and meaningfully reveal the categories of “education”, “culture”, “communicative culture”, “communication”. The upbringing of a communicative culture in the cultural space of a law school will ensure in the future a positive impact on the subject and interaction between subjects in professional activities within the framework of the law as a true value of social order and the triumph of justice. The scientific novelty of the work lies in identifying the axiological level of the communicative culture of the future prosecutor’s worker, the most important task of which is the approval of communicative values that authorize the program of interaction in prosecutorial activities; fixation of pedagogical norms, commensurate with the humanitarian nature of the modern personality, “returned” to communication “after hitches, breaks, indistinctness” (Schegloff) interaction. Pedagogical intentions in the communicative culture of future prosecutors are determined. The phenomenon of education of communicative culture in axiological and culturological approaches has been studied. The upbringing of the communicative culture of the future prosecutor, creating conceptual systems of professional communication and supporting dialogue relations, will help to strengthen the semantic continuum of the space of professional activity, including the means of activity and the organization of consciousness that develops in communication (vision, understanding, meaning formation) (V.M. Rozin). The results of the study can be used in the education of future prosecutors in the communicative space of a law school and in the formation of a system of educational work in the prosecutor’s office of the Russian Federation.

Resumen
This paper examines the differences in distribution between three Spanish verbal periphrases with continuative meaning: gerundial constructions with seguir, continuar and proseguir. Based on quantitative data extracted from two Spanish language corpora, our diachronic and synchronic analysis shows that over time the three auxiliaries have experienced changes in frequency which can be related to text genre and to the concept of communicative immediacy and distance. We argue that in Modern Spanish the whole discourse continuum of communicative immediacy and distance is covered by continuar and seguir. Contrastively, proseguir mainly survives in the prefab proseguir diciendo, which also seems to have played a significant role in the original expansion of the periphrasis. Thus, our data suggest that prefabs are not only involved in increasing the use of a grammaticalizing construction, but that they arguably also play an important role in the preservation of a construction whose use has decreased significantly over time.

Resumen
The present study investigated the important role higher education plays in the success of the translator in his/her profession. To end this, the researcher prepared a translation test consisting of 12 short literary texts for data collection from both educated and uneducated translators who were equally divided into two groups. The 20 judges were invited to judge the level of communicative function of the translations made by both groups of translators on the basis of a five-point scale on a continuum from "Uncommunicative" to "Communicative" that was designed according to Nord’s (2018) functionalist approach. As the results indicated, the educated translators produced the highest communicative translations that put into Nord’s instrumental translation category. By contrast, the uneducated translators made the translations with the average level of communication that led their translation to be placed into documentary translation category. In conclusion, the educated translators, who held a master’s degree in Translation Studies, were more successful in producing communicative translations because of their profound knowledge of translation theories and mastery over translation strategies. This gives the indication of the utmost importance of higher education in the achievement of the translators in their career.

Sumner’s complete theory of caring in nursing as moral bi-directional communication is explicated, including the components of the nurse’s personal self and professional self, which includes theoretical knowledge, practice or skills knowledge, and experiential knowledge with both emotion and cognitive aspects, and the patient’s personal self and illness self with both emotion and cognitive aspects. The bi-directional communication that occurs in this unique interaction, delimited by the healthcare world, is explained on a moral maturity continuum. The interactive discourse is between two equal human beings: Nurse and patient. The underlying premise is that all humans are innately vulnerable because they are exposed in communication and this demands “considerateness,” which is the moral component.

Integrating the arts with mixed methods research (MMR) presents untapped potential for innovative methodological approaches. Arts and MMR integration exists on a continuum, ranging from low-level (e.g., communicating about MMR using art) to high-level integration (e.g., interweaving arts-based and MMR approaches), and myriad art forms are available to facilitate concept formation, data collection, analysis, and representation. Given that a primary objective of the arts and MMR respectively is to explore and understand the complex social world, arts–MMR integration has potential to enable insights not possible through the use of either approach in isolation, and to present new opportunities for transformative social change. In this article, we explore such potentials and intersections philosophically and methodologically by way of four case examples framed by the newly conceptualized Art-MMR Integration Continuum, which ranges from communicative, data source, analytic, and conceptual integration.

Resumen
Abstract This paper examines the roles of indexicals in explicating speakers’ intentions and constructing common ground (CG) in the context of a continuum with two extreme endpoints, the intracultural at one end, and the intercultural at the other, within the framework of the socio-cognitive approach proposed and developed by Kecskes (2008, 2010, 2014) and Kecskes and Zhang (2009). Thirteen participants from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds were recruited to represent varying degrees on the intra- and intercultural continuum. They were divided into three groups: American English speakers, speakers from Asian countries (Korea, China, and Vietnam), and a group of speakers (China, Vietnam, Brazil, and America), each of whom represents linguistically and culturally different countries. Eight extracts were drawn from the data of up to three hours of recordings, including discussions on one topic, and retrospective interviews retrieving the speakers’ intentions for using deixis. The results reveal that the closer the interlocutors were towards the intercultural communicative context endpoint on the continuum, the more they employed four types of indexicals (person, location or spatial, temporal, and discourse deixis) as common ground construction strategies. Those strategies included the explicit manifestation of intentions, clarification, and confirmation of referent identification in actual situational context, elicitation of information, disambiguation and explanation of similar salient specifics in their home culture in an effort to sustain cooperative communication. This study enhances our understanding of different functions of indexicals in interactions on the intra- and intercultural continuum, which resulted from different levels of context interpretation and common ground.

Resumen
This work extends the masspersonal communication model (MPCM; O'Sullivan & Carr, 2017) by introducing anticipated interaction as a way to understand variations within the masspersonal continuum. Drawing from Thompson's mediated communication framework (1995), we argue that anticipated interaction paves the way for establishing a communicative relationship between interactants. In social media, this relationship is rooted in a sender's expectations for audience response and the imagined responsive audience. Using experience sampling, we show that anticipated interaction varies across social media. Further, we outline the relational and situational factors associated with expecting response and the specificity of imagined responsive audience. These variations and their sources characterize masspersonal communication as a socially and technologically situated practice shaped by multiple intersecting influences.

Resumen
This study provided a preliminary investigation of the relative influence of cognitive and communicative factors in comprehension monitoring. This question was approached by studying language-disordered (LD) children for whom these abilities are presumably dissociated. Their performance on an ambiguity detection task was compared to that of two groups of control children, one matched for comprehension level and the other for cognitive level. Results revealed that LD children performed similarly to the control children who were matched for level of comprehension. The LD children's performance was examined along a continuum of the relative influence of cognitive and communicative factors, given that neither type of factor alone could sufficiently account for effective comprehension monitoring. It was concluded that communicative factors, both active primary comprehension and social communicative knowledge, had a stronger influence than the cognitive factors in our particular comprehension monitoring task.

Each variant of the second-person object constitutes a meaningful possibility used by speakers to define their particular position in relation to the communicative situation where they participate, tightly connected to their communicative purposes during interaction. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of SPU object variation in a corpus of Contemporary Spanish (Corpus Interaccional del Español) show that variants are unevenly distributed across textual genres and socioprofessional affiliations of speakers and contribute to shape communicative styles based on the continuum of objectivity-subjectivity.

Resumen
The article is devoted to the communicative construct of threat as a cognitive tool, basis or method of interpretation helping a speaker to evaluate threat statements which are capable form different effects on interlocutors’ emotional state and form their feelings of certain intensity. The communicative threat construct makes it possible to determine the limological parameters of the semantic space of verbal threat in the context of interlocutors’ social interaction and fix in this space the meaningful elements that form the idea of verbal threat in cognitive agents’ mental space. The study shows that the communicative construct of threat includes a number of statements in a form of language social practices realized in the process of discursive interaction and associated with a change of addressee’s emotional state in the content continuum from disposition “comfortable state” to disposition “uncomfortable state”. The set of speaker’s and listener’s possible dispositions of the emotional state forms the functional and semantic space of verbal threat making it possible to assert that almost any utterance with the meaning of threat is one of the I-speaker’s and I-listener’s possible dispositions on the content continuum of menasive construct, while a menasive construct is a set of I-speaker’s and I-listener’s possible dispositions of emotional states. The use of a communicative construct of threat opens up possibilities for interpreting the effect ofthreats, and the results of this study can be used to predict the pragmatic effect of threats on a single or mass addressee. Considering of verbal manifestations of threat as a communicative construct makes it possible to evaluate not only the intense depth of the pragmatic effect of threats in social interaction, but also to interpret the directions of this effect within the framework of a typical threat scenario.

Resumen
A key challenge for development aid organizations is to clearly communicate messages about their programs in diverse socio-cultural contexts. Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) activities are designed to attempt a persuasive connection with project beneficiaries for whom the development message is usually new or otherwise difficult to understand. One strategy to achieve this connection is to leverage an influential institution whose standing in the community can give development messages authoritative backing. This article draws lessons for BCC programs about building the trustworthiness of new messages by examining the communicative actions of the Catholic Church in Timor-Leste in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis elaborates Charles S. Peirce’s theory of signs wherein the communication between utterers and interpreters is transacted along a continuum that links objects, signs and interpreters. It is argued that an interpreter’s trust in the sign is negotiated between what Peirce calls the Immediate Interpretant and the Dynamic Interpretant, where an object (such as a BCC activity) is contextualized to existing cultural values and mind-sets of the audience.

Resumen
Interrogative statements are used to perform the intention of the query in various discourse-stylistic forms of the Ukrainian language. This article aims to analyze interrogative statements from the stand-point of their functioning as syntactic constructions. Drawing on a wide range of literary sources, the author states that, fulfilling the epistemological need to fill information gaps in speaker’s knowledge, the interrogative statement is the most relevant linguistic sign used to express the speaker’s motivation and needs. The interrogative statement is, however, a clear example of communicative-pragmatic functions which include figurativeness, expression of will, emotionality, evaluation, and tolerance, verbalized in a speech in accordance with the speaker’s intentions. A suggested in terpretation of the linguistic nature of interrogative constructions attests to their ambivalence and semantic syncretism along with the performance of primary and secondary functions. The discourse-stylistic continuum of the Ukrainian language, i.e., vernacular, literary, journalistic, religious, and epistolary, represents a rather extensive functional potential of inter-rogative constructions. In spoken discourse, interrogative expressions, e.g., address-oriented syntactic units, verbalize the specifying and clarifying intentions of the query, thus highlighting their primary function in the dialogic discourse. In other registers, these are secondary func-tions related to the following aspects: 1) figurativeness and aesthetics of speech which em phasizes the linguo-creative nature of a speaker, i.e., fiction; 2) the display of certain information which has a purposeful influence on the addressee of the speech and encourages specific actions, i.e., journalistic discourse; 3) the creation of aphoristic and rhetorical dialogue, establishing spiritual values and a human worldview, i.e., religious discourse; 4) the creation of epistolary dialogue as a marker of the interrogative searching process focused on essential phenomena related to pub-lic and private life and aimed at the formation of textual communication conceived in time and space. This article introduces the concept of interrogative discourse as a dynamic continuum of human communication, a special mode of cognition and reflection of reality, one of the latest fragments of linguistic knowledge. Keywords: interrogative statement, discourse-stylistic continuum, the intention of inquiry, address-ability, dialogicality / quasi-dialogicality, interrogative discourse.

Resumen
ABSTRACT: Continuum is a one-dimensional pattern with a concise form and the significance of universality. "Prototype Theory" considers the members with the most common characteristics as the core members of one category, and all members of that category share some similar family features. Furthermore, quantum logic revised the classical logic law of "excluded middle" to the law of "included middle", which provides us with a new perspective in the linguistic study. Based on the above theories and ideas, this paper lists ten cases of continuum in language: 1) the continuum of language similarity; 2) the continuum of word and non-word in Chinese; 3) the continuum of animacy of words in language; 4) the continuum of communicative pressure; 5) the continuum of sentential focus; 6) the vowel-consonant continuum; 7) the continuum of phonation types; 8) the continuum of nasality of sounds; 9) the continuum of r-suffixation; 10) the continuum of words with neutral tone. Continuum is the renewal of academic concepts and research methods, which is of great significance to the synchronic and diachronic study of language.

Resumen
The article deals with the analysis of the problem of developing the dialogic culture of the future educators in terms of their professionalization. The author has shown that the congruent coverage of the specifics of forming an individual as an entity of professional activity in the continuum of the modern culture can be carried out only within the dialogic mode. It has been found that de-valuing the psychological component and accumulating systems of algorithmic tasks of the test type in the practice of the professional training makes it impossible to develop the communicative (and especially dialogic) culture of a specialist. The dialogic culture is interpreted by the author as an integrative construct of an individual, i.e. a set of communicative and technological indicators of the systemic behaviour (and professional-role one in particular) of the activity entity. The empirical research procedure had as its objective to outline the psychological tendencies in the development of the indicators for the communicative culture of the professionalization entities (bachelor degree and master degree students) in the modern educational space. The dominance of the monologic model of communication in the respondents’ behavioural scenarios and the absence of the self-management development dynamics in communication have been statistically corroborated. The findings of the research are interpreted as the theoretical foundation of a modern model for the dialog-phenomenological interaction that is adequate to the new challenges of the time and the educational reform principles.

ABSTRACTRelative proficiency in Gaelic varies by age in a Highland Scottish region where Gaelic is spoken by a decreasing number of bilinguals in a steadily aging population segment. Although there is a Gaelic proficiency continuum ranging from full fluency (and Gaelic dominance) to minimal generative skills (and English dominance), there are also deviations at both extremes of skill: Fully fluent speakers show self-conscious difficulty with one morphological and four syntactic structures, while minimally proficient speakers show less difficulty than might be expected in the use of conjunctions. An exceptionally keen though low-proficiency speaker can devise unusual means of compensation in using the language. Neither full fluency nor marked deficiency produces altogether predictable levels of structural conservatism or communicative success.

The relationship between Harriet Beecher Stowe and George Eliot, widely recognized as one of the most significant literary friendships in the 19th century, yet rarely focused on in scholarship beyond mutual literary influence, took place entirely through the communicative media available then: mass print, the Victorian post, and the social network of parlor literature and transatlantic literary community. The article analyzes the beginning of the correspondence, both similar to and different from fan mail exchange, with extensive quotes from Stowe’s unpublished second letter, to demonstrate an innovative theoretical point that novels can function as part of a communicative continuum between a writer and an individual reader, becoming instruments of what may be seen as a proto-virtual relationship.

Resumen
Press releases are short pieces of writing issued by companies or institutions to communicate newsworthy information to the journalist community on the one hand, and to the general public (indirectly through newspaper reporting, or, increasingly, directly by making press releases available on corporate websites) on the other. While ostensibly informative, press releases also carry an implicitly self-promotional purpose, in so far as the information they contain comes from a source internal to the organization which is the object of the release itself. This paper explores the generic features of press releases and investigates the way in which they codify the different communicative purposes and multiple receiver roles which distinguish the genre. Drawing on Bhatia’s work on genre (Bhatia 1993, 2004), and building on Jacobs’s preformulating features (Jacobs 1999a), which can be seen as linguistic strategies aimed at achieving the primary and most ostensible purpose of the press release (i.e. getting the story in the news with as little manipulation as possible on the part of journalists), the paper identifies a set of moves and strategies common to the genre, and links them to communicative purposes on the one hand, and to envisioned audiences on the other. It is argued that the press release occupies a hybrid position along the informative-promotional continuum, and that identification of its communicative purpose relies as much on core as on peripheral textual features.

Resumen
Abstract In line with recent interest in weak and often not fully determinate effects of communication permeating relevance-theoretic research, I contribute a discussion on two possible sources of speaker-intended indeterminacy within explicit import of an utterance: one residing in an intentionally underspecified location of an ad hoc concept between literal or non-literal (e.g. metaphorical or hyperbolic) interpretation, and the other lying in the higher-level explicature of an utterance, and being related to propositional attitude (e.g. pretence, reporting, dissociation) or speech-act description (e.g. complementing, reproaching). In both cases, the speaker leaves a certain amount of indeterminacy concerning the degree of her commitment to the content communicated, by not indicating where precisely the concept or the attitude is to be located on the literalness-metaphor continuum or on the continuum of various propositional attitudes/speech-act descriptions, respectively. Using a number of illustrative examples drawn from television discourse, I try to show that this kind of intended indeterminacy gives rise to communicative effects of a non-propositional kind. Additionally, the analyses presented here support the deflationary view of figurative uses of language, on which they form continua with non-figurative utterances.

Resumen
New media technologies and social media have further added to and exacerbated the powerful cultural configuration that sport (and) media comprise. Sport should be understood as a complex site with many intersecting and interrelated levels and elements that are mutually self-constituting. Modern research in the field of sports discourse, in particular the problem of analyzing sports commentary as a genre of discourse of sport still remains unresolved. The aim of the study is to establish the constitutive characteristics of tennis commentary as a genre of sports discourse. Live tennis commentary is shown to be an internally complex form of media communication that combines elements of live spoken informal conversation. The typology of sports commentary as a genre of sports discourse is determined by the following constitutive characteristics: phatic function, which includes cognitive and axiological competence, descriptiveness and presentation of utterance, semantic sufficiency and control of semantic redundancy, understanding of the context and speech continuum; instrumentality: communicative influence (suggestion), evaluation and dialogicity: appeal to TV viewers. The communicative behavior of the tennis commentator is characterized by a number of specific functions — moderation, the presence of cognitive and axiological competence, descriptiveness and presentation, manifested in the evaluation / figures of speech.

Resumen
Interpreter-mediated communication, as a complex activity that involves social interaction among all participants, is increasingly important in today’s globalized world. A focus on sociolinguistic questions and on considerations associated with the interpreter’s presence and actions has led to opposing views ranging from that of “verbatim” interlinguistic reproducer or “conduit” to that of “advocate,” “cultural broker,” or “coordinator.” Still, the existing literature has rarely modeled the relationship between the parameters that influence the interpreter’s on-site decisions during a specific communication event. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the interpreter’s scope of action in a given communicative situation within a Triadic Discourse Interpreting Model (TRIM) by means of discourse interpreting filters, which show the interplay of static and dynamic TRIM parameters. Thus, the interpreter’s role is no longer defined by the verbatim-mediation dichotomy but rather reflects a decision-making continuum that evolves as the communication develops and offers a better understanding of the interpreter’s complex and important social role.

The illocutionary complex that determines the pragmatic meaning of text units with purpose semantics as part of the question-answer dialogue was analyzed. Using the methods of conversation analysis, introspection, linguistic modeling and observation, a multifarious analysis of the adjacent pairs in the political interview and talk show fragments was carried out. The factors that define the generation of purpose-related judgments and the choice of indirect ways to convey the communicative intentions of the addresser were singled out, as well as the aspects that are important for understanding the perceived content by the addressee. The organization of the communicative continuum within the framework of interaction was investigated. The functionality of the pragmatic context (the background of spoken interaction) was revealed. The factors influencing the quality of the illocutionary profile of text units (clarity/blur) as it is perceived and interpreted by the addressee were established. The signals of the communicative intentions generated by the addresser were considered. The choice of spoken response in the situations of harsh pressure was discussed. It was demonstrated that the pragmatic context plays a leading role in perceiving of the illocutionary complex during the communicative interaction.

The purpose of this paper is to enhance existing insights into the complex relationship between legal language, legal interpretation and legal translation that challenges the participants of a particular domain-specific communicative situation. This situation can be described as a complex communicative-cognitive procedure taking into consideration a pragmatic approach to reach its addressees on a continuum from lay persons to experts. The analysis of some “typical” examples shows (not surprisingly) that different kinds of knowledge are necessary in order to achieve a felicitous communicative act in which a high degree of specialist knowledge is of paramount importance to a successful result both in intra- and interlingual translation. The particular legal language under scrutiny, in other words German contrastive to Norwegian, form the basis for the analysis of the activity of translation in which the translator must be able to understand/interpret the text and must be aware of not taking the words at their “face value” to be able to render their meaning in the target language.

The study is relevant because in the conditions of the civil identity formation of Russian people, it is productive to take into account the genesis of the ethno-national experience of competing narratives, in which the culture of relations between the peo-ples of our country has developed. Referring to the analysis of social community it seems appropriate to use two terms: ethnos and nationality. In the dis-course about ethnos, it is advisable to focus on the cultural-philosophical analysis of its formation and development. The purpose of the study is to sub-stantiate the thesis that the subject's thinking corre-sponds to communications characteristic of a par-ticular historical era and culture. The study reveals the systemic nature of thinking and communication. The authors substantiate the idea that the ethnocul-tural originality of the communicative continuum is conditioned by the specific historical context within which the formation and development of the ethnos takes place. In this interpretation, the proposition about the purely national nature of the psycho-mental nature of a social community loses its value, and the thesis according to which specific historical experience gained in a certain communicative con-tinuum plays the main role in the formation of ethnic originality.

Abstract This investigation aims to uncover the variation of the Spanish second-person singular subject pronoun tú ‘you.sg’ when it displaces its content away from the particular circumstances of the speaker and changes its deictic meaning to a resource for the objectivization of the utterance. The multiple repercussions of the formal variation (expression and omission) of this subject on internal and external levels of meaning will be explored. Essential to understanding this case of variation is the consideration of prominent features of the communicative situation, as well as the social identities and roles assumed by the speakers within it (including professional affiliation, transactional vs. interpersonal communicative stance and gender). The results of the analysis allow us to sketch basic interactional and discursive tendencies governing objectivizing uses of the second-person singular tú along the oral-written continuum

Resumen
In a world in which major technological advances have considerably boosted the use of the web as a communication tool, the analysis of digital press releases to disseminate information on the case-related activity of judicial courts and project their social and institutional identity far and wide is useful to understand an evolving continuum of professional discursive practices (re-)shaped within institutional and media (public relations) communication strategies. Drawing from the criteria of genre categorizations (Swales, 2004; Bhatia, 2004; Askehave & Swales, 2001) along with computer-mediated analysis of texts (Yates & Orlikowski, 1992; Askehave & Nielsen, 2005; Caballero, 2008; Villanueva et al., 2008; Garzone, 2012) and metapragmatic strategies of press releases (Jacobs, 1999) in a randomised corpus of web-based European Court of Justice institutional press releases, I first place the sampled texts into their context of use, and then look at the generic structure used to realise the moves with communicative purposes, in both qualitative and quantitative analyses of data. Context and structure underlying the communicative genre are then mapped onto the role and function of intertextuality and interdiscursivity (Fairclough, 1992, 2003; Bhatia 2004, 2017) alongside recontextualization (Linell, 1998; Sarangi & Brookers-Howell, 2006). The findings show that the genre typifies the rhetorical activities and purposes of release writers as they come across to the media and the wider audiences in the ongoing context of institutionalised communication, and the ways the genre effectively replicates other forms of discourses and genres at different levels of organisational structure.

Within this article, I explore how coproductions (expansions made by a second speaker upon a previous utterance) and questions regarding prior utterances work to verbalize inferences regarding the temporal information in spoken German conversation. While questions regarding prior utterances and coproductions are traditionally understood to have different communicative functions (signaling understanding/ misunderstanding; turn taking) to coproductions, empirical data shows how these expression types enable the speaker to gradually verbalize different strengths of assumption about details of the previous turn. These two expression types are not a dichotomy, but a continuum.

Abstract Donald J. Trump’s surprising victory in the 2016 American presidential election requires analysis: what brought it about, and what might it portend? This paper explores these and other questions: how have Trump’s victory and his communicative strategies compromised the culture’s notions of “truth” – via a continuum from “lie” through “post-truth,” “truthiness,” and “alternative facts” to “truth”? Is Trump – judging from his language and other communications – really a populist? And how are we to understand his many idiosyncrasies of discourse, as well as his supporters’ unwillingness to worry about them?

Young people are often characterised as cyberkids in reference to an assumed intense engagement and natural affinity with the internet. This article critiques the empirical basis for such claims and explores two alternative perspectives: namely, continua of use and typologies of use. Using UK data on 12–15 year old home internet users, a series of descriptive and latent class analyses of young people’s internet use is presented. Results show there is little support for cyberkid characterisations and a proposed continuum of use is also shown to not fit the data. A three-way typology of use is instead presented which suggests a third of young home internet users make only limited use of the internet and the remaining two-thirds diverge into informational and creational/communicative users. These findings are used to argue that Mannheim’s notion of generational units may be a useful way to characterise young people’s internet use.

Resumen
Purpose The human voice is an exceptionally versatile instrument that is capable of complex communicative and emotive behaviors. Typically, these behaviors are sufficient for daily communication activities; however, elite vocal athletes have higher vocal demands and arguably enhanced vocal capabilities. The current definition of a voice disorder is a change in quality, pitch, and loudness of the voice that draws attention to the speaker. In this article, we suggest that this definition does not provide an adequate description of voice problems of elite vocal athletes. Conclusion As a result, the current clinical system of evaluation and intervention may fail to meet the needs of the exceptional voice when even a subtle decline in vocal quality may affect performance. Under the current definition of a voice disorder, these vocal changes may not qualify for vocal rehabilitation supported by 3rd-party payers. To address this issue, we offer a definition of the exceptional voice, propose expansion of the current voice production continuum to include high-level vocal performers, and provide recommendations for the rehabilitation and habilitation of the exceptional voice.

Resumen
With the exception of Plains Indian Sign Language and Pacific Northwest sawmill sign languages, highly developed alternate sign languages (sign languages typically employed by and for the hearing) share not only common structural linguistic features, but their use is also characterized by convergent ideological commitments concerning communicative medium and linguistic modality. Though both modalities encode comparable denotational content, speaker-signers tend to understand manual-visual sign as a pragmatically appropriate substitute for oral-aural speech. This paper suggests that two understudied clusters of alternate sign languages, Armenian and Cape York Peninsula sign languages, offer a general model for the development of alternate sign languages, one in which the gesture-to-sign continuum is dialectically linked to hypertrophied forms of interactional avoidance up-to-and-including complete silence in the co-presence of affinal relations. These cases illustrate that the pragmatic appropriateness of sign over speech relies upon local semiotic ideologies which tend to conceptualize the manual-visual linguistic modality on analogy to the gestural communication employed in interactional avoidance, and thus as not counting as true language.
