Texto completoChild obesity is generally accepted to be one of the most negative trends in the world that we live in. Since marketing for food products has been recognized to be pushing this trend forward, it is hereby presented some alternatives that prove that marketing may be a solution instead of a problem. For this purpose, an analysis on the intrinsic qualities and consumer perceptions of Compal and Um Bongo juices was produced. An experiment was made with 58 children from 4 to 10 years old, in order to evaluate the possibility of attitude change, based on Petty and Cacioppo’s Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion (ELM). In these tests the subjects were initially submitted to a blind profile of the juices, delivering only the emotional attributes currently being communicated by Compal. Then, children’s perceptions regarding the product were analyzed through their drawings. Thereafter, they were exposed to an intervention phase which consisted of rationally communicating the nutritious benefits of the product and other nutrition-related concepts, and we finally evaluated their perceptions post-test using drawing techniques. There is evidence that children in this age range will change their perceptions regarding the product when a rational communication is applied.

Texto completoThe concept of sustainability has been adapted in business context to achieve balance, integrity, economic, social and environmental performance (Naidoo 2002:129); however Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is a relatively new concept to some companies. This study measures the growing debate over the responsibilities of business and the examination of communication strategies and CSI programmes being implemented by the banking sector in the Chatsworth District The first part of the study reviews literature pertaining to the communication process, electronic communication, mass communication, organisational communication, public communication, communication strategies in corporate social investment and community development. Subsequent chapters deal with the construction of a survey instrument employed to measure and evaluate the extent of CSI programmes by the banking sector and the findings of the survey. Penultimate chapters blend the insights gained from this literature review to interpret the results, obtained through the quantitative research methodology, to describe a set of conclusions and recommendations in the context of community upliftment through CSI initiatives.

This study investigated the relationship between Communication Strategies (CS) use and L2 oral development. In order to reach this goal, three speech samples of each one of 30 L2 learners of English were collected. Participants were divided into three groups of 10 learners each, according to their level of proficiency # pre-intermediate, intermediate and advanced. Participants' oral fluency was assessed by means of speech rate (Lenon, 1990). L2 speech production was elicited by means of three narrative tasks in three different sessions. Data analysis revealed a common group of CS across sessions and across proficiency levels. Besides, it indicated that the relationship between CS use and L2 oral fluency, as measured by the speech rate, is not statistically significant. The analyses further showed a significant statistical correlation among speech rate measures in sessions 1, 2 and 3 in the pre-intermediate and intermediate groups, thus indicating a homogeneous oral behavior among these participants across sessions. To explain the few instances of significant statistical correlations between speech rate and types of CS, it is suggested that due to the multitude of factors affecting L2 fluency, other aspects of speech production need to be analysed, such as grammatical accuracy and complexity. In addition, the nature of tasks and their cognitive demands might have contributed to learners' apparently limited oral improvement.

Texto completoThe present work aimed to contribute to understand the public perception of biodiversity, to find patterns of biodiversity representation in communication pathways and to promote strategies to modify stereotypes towards biodiversity, creating a more aware and active public through environmental education and citizen science projects. Four studies were developed under the following subjects: 1) understanding young adults preferences about animals, 2) comprehend how biodiversity is portrayed in children’s books from the Portuguese National Reading Plan, 3) evaluating the impact of an environmental education project on the public awareness of ponds and associated biodiversity, and 4) understanding the potential of a Citizen Science approach to map ponds in the Portuguese territory. The results from the various studies showed a limited and distorted public view and awareness about living beings. This was found to agree with the biodiversity portray patterns in children´s trade books, which seem to constitute important sources of information about biodiversity during childhood. The present work also described the implementation and evaluation of a resourceful environmental education strategy that was able to change the public attitudes towards ponds and associated biodiversity, especially the amphibians. Finally, it also showed that the implementation of a Citizen Science action was able to engage citizens in pond conservation actions and create the first map of ponds in Portugal through the use of Volunteer Geographic Information mechanisms. The work used innovative methodologies of data analysis and project impact evaluation that can be useful to future research in science communication.

In this essay I want to investigate the internal communication of an transcultural company to see how different cultures are shown in different styles of negotiation. I have been looking at sixteen emails between a German businessman and a Swedish businessman, both working at the transcultural company Volkswagen.
The essay’s research questions are: 1. Do the German and the Swede differ when it comes to manner of speaking, and if so, how does that effect the negotiation? 2. Which styles do they use in negotiation? What kind of consequences do the styles cause? 3. Would carefully prepared rhetorical strategies make the negotiation more effective, and in that case, which strategies would that be?
To answer these questions I have made a stylistic and a structural analysis, followed by an analysis of the negotiation style and strategies. At last I studied the two cultures and made a comparison between them. I have built my essay on the theory of cultural dimensions by Hofstede and Ghauri’s idea about the phases of negotiation, to mention a few.
Conclusions I’ve made are that there are bigger differences between Germans and Swedes then I expected. I’ve also seen that education in negotiation could be profitable for transcultural companies, which I with this essay would like to convey.Agbi, Rachel Oludolapo. Increasing prevalence of autonomous systems has generated interest in effective inclusion of robots as team members in many domains, especially where complex and safety-critical tasks must be performed. We envision a world where autonomous systems can be seamlessly integrated into high performing human teams. In order for team members to successfully work in concert to achieve a goal, the team must establish a common understanding of the task expectations and communicate effectively. In this dissertation , we drew inspiration from studies of effective human teamwork, which showed that best performing human teams exploit anticipatory coordination strategies (referred to as implicit coordination) to selectively communicate information based on the perceived needs of the other members in the team instead of requesting for information (referred to as explicit coordination). We elaborated upon prior characterizations of communication as implicit versus explicit by dividing implicit communication into two subtypes: (1) goal-based information (referred to as deliberative-implicit communication) and (2) status updates (referred to as reactive-implicit communication). Based on an empirical study conducted using 13 teams of 4 people working on a collaborative search-and-deliver task, we found that the best performing teams exhibited higher rates of deliberative communication than reactive communication compared to the worst-performing teams (p = 0.039). In other words, the best performing teams proactively shared goal-based information with their teammates. By gaining insight into how high-performing human teams communicate effectively, we developed a computational model using a Maximum Entropy Markov Model (MEMM) that selected the appropriate communication type (i.e., deliberative, reactive, explicit or no communication) for the autonomous agent using human teams' data. We showed that the MEMM model accuracy was high when the model was trained and tested using the best-performing teams' data (73.3%) and all 13 teams' data (92.3%) from the previously studied human-human teams. We further validated this model by assessing team performance in an empirical study where teams consisting of 2 human and 2 autonomous agent worked on a collaborative task. We compared the performance of teams with agents using the MEMM communication model to performance of teams with agents communicating using only deliberative-implicit communications or reactive-implicit communications. Results from this study showed that team performance with agents using the MEMM communication model was statistically better than team performance with agents using reactive-implicit communication model (p < 0.001) and deliberative communication model for the fastest five teams (p <0.001). We also found that mean task completion time for agent using the MEMM model was equivalent to the mean task completion time of human-human teams study within 95% confidence. For these reasons, we recommend that a human inspired communication model be further investigated and implemented in human robot teams meant to work in cooperation with human teammates. This is the first study to empirically demonstrate that teams consisting of humans and autonomous agents, where the agents were designed to emulate communication strategies of human teams, performs equally as well as teams with all humans.

Texto completoThe study was conducted with the purpose of surveying the nature, patterns and trends of the new communication strategies to enhance marketing of fast moving customer goods (FMCG). The researcher intended to investigate current consumer behaviour with respect to fast moving consumer goods FMCG and new communication strategies for marketing of FMCG. The study focused primarily on managing FMCG to increase its availability to rural communities with the hope of addressing poverty eradication and providing some avenues for job creation. This included an investigation into new media and technology to enhance the marketing of FMCG with the intention of making these goods more easily accessible to rural communities. The study also investigated current consumer behaviour with respect to fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and new communication strategies for marketing of FMCG. Unravelling methods of making FMCG easily available to rural communities would be an alternate strategy to urbanise rural communities and reduce unemployment. FMCG forms a fundamental aspect of people’s daily lives and is an ideal tool which can be used to manipulate industry to touch lives of all people throughout South Africa. The study offers thought provoking ideas on how to urbanise rural communities by using basic commodities which people use on a daily basis, and it further offers ideas for further research in this field. It also unravels contemporary methods of marketing basic commodities.
