Resumen
This thesis project has studied a number of protocols that could be used to communicate between a vehicle and a remote server in the context of Scania’s connected services. While there are many factors that are of interest to Scania (such as response time, transmission speed, and amount of data overhead for each message), this thesis will evaluate each protocol in terms of how much data overhead is introduced and how packet loss affects this overhead. The thesis begins by giving an overview of how a number of alternative protocols work and what they offer with regards to Scania’s needs. Next these protocols are compared based on previous studies and each protocol’s specifications to determine which protocol would be the best choice for realizing Scania’s connected services. Finally, a test framework was set up using a virtual environment to simulate different networking conditions. Each of the candidate protocols were deployed in this environment and setup to send sample data. The behaviour of each protocol during these tests served as the basis for the analysis of all of these protocols. The thesis draws the conclusion that to reduce the data transmission overhead between vehicles and Scania’s servers the most suitable protocol is the UDP based MQTT SN.

This work uses a simulation package to analyze the performance of a specific X.25 Value Added Communication Network (VAN), comprising a Network Administrator and a cluster of Network Concentrators (NCs). Detailed models of the network elements are developed, and system performance is analyzed in terms of network response time for the terminal users communicating across the network, identification of areas of bottlenecks in the NC system, and NC system throughput. The througput parameter is represented by the percentage of the output traffic to the load offered from the network of terminals. The performance of the Network Administrator system is also modeled, focusing particularly on the automatic restoration of service to failed NCs through downloading of operating software sets over the X.25 network. The final part consists of a model of a modification of the network manager components of the network as proposed in the DM upgrade project. In this section, NC loading time is again the desired performance indicator. It is shown that there is no noticeable improvement in this parameter between the original system and the proposed upgrade, both systems having a minimum loading time of about 3.5 to 6 minutes for a small network.

Resumen
The purpose of this study is to examine and evaluate the security of the data traffic sent to and from smartphone devices. Since smartphones are becoming more common, are highly connected, often use cloud based computation, and contain highly personal data, it is important that the communication is secure and safe. This paper examines the Android and iOS platforms and focuses on three key parts: platform, application, and user. The platforms are evaluated on the basis of their libraries, APIs, and documentation; applications are evaluated using static code analysis and manual traffic analysis; users are examined using a social experiment. Results show that about one in twenty applications leaks sensitive data, without any difference between platforms. While the platforms do a good job educating developers about security there are room for improvements. The paper also concludes that a non-insignificant share of users are inclined to bypass important security warnings which may expose their passwords to an attacker.

Resumen
Middleware eases the development of distributed applications. Expansion in the enterprise world entails integration of heterogeneous products, and there is a demand for a balance between performance, interoperability and security in the distributed applications. Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) offers a technology to build service-oriented, secure, reliable and interoperable distributed applications. The current literature contains few studies comparing the performance of WCF with other technologies, but it does not address the performance of WCF in a cross-technology communication. This master thesis experimentally evaluates the performance of WCF in unsecure and secure variants. It evaluates the performance in on-machine and cross-machine communication, and it addresses the performance of WCF’s interoperability with ASMX and Java. We have developed the service and client applications in both secure and unsecure variants. The experiments are then conducted using these applications in a laboratory setting. We have measured the performance in terms of throughput, response time, processor and memory utilization during the experiments. Our results show that in unsecure variants, the WCF service in cross-machine communication has the best response time than on-machine communication on small datasets. However, on large datasets the service in on-machine communication has the best response time. In secure variants, the service in on-machine communication has better response time than the cross-machine communication. In both secure and unsecure variants, the service has better throughput and consumed lesser resources in cross-machine communication than in on-machine communication. In case of WCF’s interoperability with ASMX and Java, both the secure as well as unsecure WCF service show more scalable performance for the WCF client than for ASMX and Java clients. The secure as well as unsecure service show better performance for the ASMX client than for the Java client. The unsecure variants of WCF service perform better than the secure variants, except in a few cases of memory utilization. Therefore, the performance of the WCF service degrades due to security.

Resumen
The ultimate aim of this thesis was to design and implement an advanced software based Augmentative Communication Device (ACD) , or Voice Output Communication Aid NOCA), for non-vocal Learning Disabled individuals by applying current psychological models, theories, and experimental techniques. By taking account of potential user's cognitive and linguistic abilities a symbol based device (Easy Speaker) was produced which outputs naturalistic digitised human speech and sound and makes use of a photorealistic symbol set. In order to increase the size of the available symbol set a hypermedia style dynamic screen approach was employed. The relevance of the hypermedia metaphor in relation to models of knowledge representation and language processing was explored. Laboratory based studies suggested that potential user's could learn to productively operate the software, became faster and more efficient over time when performing set conversational tasks. Studies with unimpaired individuals supported the notion that digitised speech was less cognitively demanding to decode, or listen to. With highly portable, touch based, PC compatible systems beginning to appear it is hoped that the otherwise silent will be able to use the software as their primary means of communication with the speaking world. Extensive field trials over a six month period with a prototype device and in collaboration with user's caregivers strongly suggested this might be the case. Off-device improvements were also noted suggesting that Easy Speaker, or similar software has the potential to be used as a communication training tool. Such training would be likely 10 improve overall communicative effectiveness. To conclude, a model for successful ACD development was proposed.

Kemp, William M. "A comparison of the simultaneous communication evaluation with the sign communication proficiency interview". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77904.

Texto completo
Resumen
There is a need to identify a specific test to assess one's Simultaneous Communication skills (a combination of Sign Language with the use of spoken English). The Simultaneous Communication Evaluation and the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview were examined to compare and to determine the reliability and validity for the latter. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire was used as an independent variable. Multitrait-multimethod methodology (Campbell and Fiske, 1959) was used to examine construct validity of the two methods of assessing the twenty-eight subjects' communication skills, as well as to show their reliability. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire was used as an observation tool to obtain dichotomized scores used to measure subjects' performance in the classroom as compared with the two methods of assessing the subjects' signing skills. Based on the findings of this research, the following conclusions seem justified. A. The Receptive portion of the Simultaneous Communication Evaluation generally showed a weak relationship to the other tests with the exception of the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's retest, with which it showed only a moderate relationship. This indicates that the Receptive portion may not be a valid way of assessing Sign Language competency. B. Since the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's test-retest and the inter-rater reliability indicators are moderately high, with their levels of significance being lower than .05, this method of testing may be regarded as an at least moderately reliable means of assessing the faculty members' skills in the use of Simultaneous Communication. C. The correlations for the Simultaneous Communication Evaluation and the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview's test and retest are .8058 and .5477 respectively. The Illinois Course Evaluation Questionnaire, in general, showed negative correlations with the first two tests with the probability of error being higher than the acceptable .05. One may conclude from this that there is no relationship between the ability to teach and the ability to use Simultaneous Communication. It is anticipated that the outcome of this study will have an impact on various programs and agencies that provide educational and/or social services to the hearing impaired in the United States. At present there is no established, standardized method of evaluating professionals Sign Language skills and this study may well set a precedent in this area.

Resumen

On radar level gauges currently shipped by Saab Rosemount, some adjustments of the unit's parameters has to be performed in the field. Presently, this is a cumbersome procedure; the operator has to be very close to the gauge and he either has to carry with him a bulky configuration unit or use a basic control unit on the gauge. A wireless solution, where a portable device and a receiver replace the control unit, would both allow the operator to work from a distance and eliminate the need for the bulky device.

The most conspicuous restraint for such a solution is a very low allowed power dissipation. The reason for this is that some gauges do not have a separate power supply, but are fed directly off the communication bus. A viable solution should also be commercially available and robust enough to operate in an industrial environment.

To meet these requirements both a theoretical and a practical assessment was conducted, where the two techniques for wireless communication, IrDA, and Bluetooth, was given special consideration. As for the portable device, the market for hand-held computers was investigated and ultimately a PDA from Palm was selected for this project. Together with this PDA, a prototype for each of the two wireless techniques was tested to ascertain their performance with respect to power dissipation, communication range, and communication robustness.

This investigation revealed that Bluetooth could be used over a much greater distance than IrDA and it did also provide a more robust solution overall. IrDA is nonetheless also a competent technique, and has its primary advantage in terms of much lower power dissipation compared to Bluetooth.

Resumen
The aim of this work is to show the effectiveness of techniques that allow a user to maintain its privacy and anonymity while participating in real word scenario. Users need to communicate with each other in many situations in order to share information. This creates the danger of the user’s privacy being breached and it can discourage users from taking active participation in any information sharing task. There are many real scenarios or application where users want to remain anonymous while having their communication secured. This is so in vehicular communication systems. Group signatures are versatile cryptographic tools that are suitable when we need security and privacy protection. A group signature scheme allows members of a group to sign messages on behalf of the group. Any receiver can verify the message validity but cannot discover the identity of the sender from the signed message or link two or more messages from the same signer. However, the identity of the signer can be discovered by an authority using a signed message. For this reason, Group Signature schemes were proposed in the context of vehicular communication systems. In this context, communication and computation overheads are critical. Thus, the focus of this thesis is to implement and compare different group signature schemes in terms of overhead introduced due to processing cost, and analytically evaluate their suitability for vehicular communication scenarios.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the course Eng 311, Advanced Communication Skills, offered by the Department of Modern Languages at Middle East Technical University. To fulfill this aim two questionnaires were designed to be administered to 198 out of 923 students taking this course, one at the beginning of the term and the other at the end of the term. What is more, another questionnaire was designed to be e-mailed to 114 graduate students who took this course before they graduated. In addition, a different version of the questionnaires was designed to be administered to 22 instructors teaching this course. Later, five of these instructors were also interviewed by the researcher. In this way, all these participants&rsquo
opinions about the objectives, materials and the assessment in Eng 311 were identified. The quantitative data gathered from the questionnaires were analysed by conducting t-tests, ANOVA tests and chi-square tests. The qualitative data gathered fro the open-ended questions in the questionnaires and the interviews were analysed by content analysis by the researcher. The results of the study revealed that the participants were satisfied with the course. Most of the objectives of the course were considered as important by most for the participants. As regard the materials, although there were some complaints about some parts of the textbook, it was considered as effective as a whole. The type of materials that were rated the lowest were CDs and videos. As for the assessment, it was revealed by the results that there were some problems regarding standardization in the department, and the breakdown of points. In addition to these, some instructors also complained that the time allotted to the components of this lesson was not sufficient.

Resumen
In order to evaluate the short-term educational and behavioral impact of the American Heart Association's "Face the Fats" web application had upon college students, a study involving 116 Utah State University undergraduate students was conducted. A one-group pre-posttest design was utilized to answer eight research questions focusing on: health risks associated with trans fat, general trans fat knowledge, ability to identify foods containing trans and saturated fats, food label information, healthy alternatives to trans fat, and readiness to change trans fat intake. Participants completed an online pretest survey and then viewed the "Face the Fats" website at their own pace. After viewing the website, participants completed an online posttest survey. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel. Statistical analysis of a paired sample t test revealed that "Face the Fats" was successful in changing the general trans fat knowledge of participants (p = < 0.00). Results also showed participants increasing their knowledge of health risks associated with different types of fat (p = < 0.00). Knowledge of trans fat nutritional information on food labels also significantly increased (p = < 0.00) and participants were more able to name foods containing trans fat, although some confusion remained among foods that contained both saturated and trans fat. Using a chi-square test, it was found that participants were more likely to state they were seriously considering reducing trans fat intake within the next 30 days after viewing "Face the Fats" (p = < 0.00). Results of a paired sample t test also showed an increase in the impact that trans fat information had on participants' decision to purchase and consume food (p = < 0.00).

Resumen
International organisations (IOs) wield considerable influence in today’s world. Distinguishing them from other actors are the new ideas they produce and communicate that can reframe global debates. However, there is little research about how these organisations evaluate their communication activities. This thesis sets out to fill this gap by providing the first in-depth study of communication evaluation within IOs. The central question of this thesis is to assess the extent to which communication evaluation is possible within IOs with three specific questions: 1) the appropriateness and feasibility of communication evaluation methodology for IOs; 2) the influence of internal and external factors; and 3) the use of communication evaluation findings in IOs. These questions are addressed in three distinct but interlinked empirical studies framed by a conceptual framework. Article 1 provides a 15 year review of communication evaluation within IOs through analysing systematically evaluation reports. Article 2 provides an analysis and reflection on the evaluation by this author of two communication campaigns of IOs. Article 3 provides a comprehensive study on the use of evaluation findings of these two communication campaigns. This thesis found that a process of conceptualisation is needed to match the given communication activities to an appropriate evaluation methodology, implemented with a pragmatic, adaptive and participatory approach rather than imposing a standard set of methods. Evaluation was found only in a minority of IOs and there are challenges in matching evaluation methods to the range and complexity of their communication activities. Internal factors of organisational context and communication goals were found to be important and to equally impede and enable the evaluation process. Improving the efficiency of communication activities was the main use seen of evaluation findings, occurring in unexpected and often opportunistic ways, but nevertheless an indication of a specific contribution of evaluation for communication professionals.

Resumen
In distributed systems it is often useful to ensure that messages sent between processes in a group are received by all group members. This thesis presents Reliable Non-Ordered Multicast Protocol (RNOMP). We argue that it achieves reliable multicast between processes in groups that processes can leave and join arbitrarily. The protocol has been implemented on top of a group membership simulation which allows evaluation of the performance of the protocol while varying packet loss and the frequency at which processes leaves and joins groups. After analyzing how the protocol handles certain situations we conclude that our protocol achieves reliability and performs well within certain parameter values.

Cela a donné lieu à trois études distinctes.
The communication application domain has recently experienced some great changes. This shift has led researchers to follow a new evaluation paradigm, based on the user experience. This trend differs fundamentally from its predecessors by its holistic, subjective and positive nature. Many measurement methods have been developed to assess the user experience, but remain immature and even contradictory. Moreover, the basic nature of the user experience has led to the loss of reliability in the exercise of its measurement. This is why studies should be conducted in order to increase the validity and reliability of this new approach. The main aim of this research is to use several methods and to combine and articulate them using various techniques to improve the measurement quality. These studies was based on a broad spectrum of indicators (physiological, behavioral and self-reported) and two triangulation strategies in particular: multi-faceted and multi-measures. Finally, these methods were tested in real applied cases and under an increasing procedure complexity and statistical processing. This research has resulted in three separate studies. The first aims to evaluate the relevance of a movie recommendation algorithm against its competitor using a multifaceted evaluation strategy. A second study was designed to test the relevance of a multi-measures evaluation model by assessing the usability of university sites based on a remote user testing software (Evalyzer) and a multimodal combination of various indicators of usability. A final study was conducted to validate multi-measures immersion protocol (questionnaire, facial expression, skin conductance, heart rate, eye behavior). These three studies have highlighted the relevance of numerous measures (of usability and user experience), the added value of some of their combinations, as well as a critical return to the multi-facet validation procedure used in this thesis

Resumen
The C2X Communication is of high interest to the automotive industry. Ongoing research on this topic mainly bases on the simulation of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks. In order to estimate the necessary level of simulation details their impact on the results needs to be examined. This thesis focuses on different channel models as the freespace, shadowing, and Ricean model, along with varying parameters. For these simulations the network simulator ns-2 is extended to provide IEEE 802.11p compliance. However, the WAVE mode is not considered since it is still under development and not finally approved. Besides a more sophisticated packet error model than the existing implementation, as well as a link adaptation algorithm, is added. In this thesis several simulations examine specific details of wireless communication systems such as fairness of multiple access, interferences, throughput, and variability. Furthermore, the simulation points out some unexpected phenomena as starving nodes and saturation effects in multi hop networks. Those led to the conclusion that the IEEE 802.11 draft amendment does not solve known problems of the original IEEE 802.11 standard.

Resumen
Increasing number of ageing population and people who need continuous health monitoring and rising the costs of health care have triggered the concept of the novel wireless technology-driven human body monitoring. Human body monitoring can be performed using a network of small and intelligent wireless medical sensors which may be attached to the body surface or implanted into the tissues. It enables carers to predict, diagnose, and react to adverse events earlier than ever. The concept of Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) was introduced to fully exploit the benefits of wireless technologies in telemedicine and m-health. The main focus of this research is the design and performance evaluation of strategies and architectures that would allow seamless and efficient interconnection of patient’s body area network and the stationary (e.g., hospital room or ward) wireless networks. I first introduce the architecture of a healthcare system which bridges WBANs and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). I adopt IEEE 802.15.6 standard for the patient’s body network because it is specifically designed for WBANs. Since IEEE 802.15.6 has strict Quality of Service (QoS) and priorities to transfer the medical data to the medical server a QoS-enabled WLAN for the next hop is needed to preserve the end-to-end QoS. IEEE 802.11e standard is selected for the WLAN in the hospital room or ward because it provides prioritization for the stations in the network. I investigate in detail the requirements posed by different healthcare parameters and to analyze the performance of various alternative interconnection strategies, using the rigorous mathematical apparatus of Queuing Theory and Probabilistic Analysis; these results are independently validated through discrete event simulation models. This thesis has three main parts; performance evaluation and MAC parameters settings of IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA), performance evaluation and tuning the MAC parameters of IEEE 802.15.6, and designing a seamless and efficient interconnection strategy which bridges IEEE 802.11e EDCA and IEEE 802.15.6 standards for a healthcare system.

Resumen
A Wide Area Measurement, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) strategy offers great potential for the upgrade of the supervision, operation, protection and control of modern power systems. Forwarding high volume measurements as well as timecritical protection and control signals across a national area power infrastructure poses a major challenge. A flexible, reliable communication platform is the key to enabling these enhanced functionalities. Thus the research focuses on the issues of communication network topology and Quality of Service (QoS) control that enable the range of fully functional WAMPAC applications, ensuring that their requirements in terms of delay and throughput are satisfied. In the goal of designing a flexible and reliable platform, the appropriate network topology is designed and analysed laying the foundation for the investigation of the optimum placements of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and the characterisation of network performance. Clustering algorithms are applied to determine the locations of the distributed network of PMUs based on the designed network topology not compromising the power infrastructure requirements. The assignments of traffic flows according to the IEEE C37.118 standard and proposed advanced WAMPAC applications are analysed through simulation for the existing United Kingdom power system. Performance of the system is verified in terms of link capacities, network topologies and QoS, and results prove the proposed solution guarantees the network performance required to support the spectrum of WAMPAC applications.

This thesis documents the testing of a prototype of a smartphone to be used by roadway workers and dispatchers that was based in a wireless data link service. The main purpose of using a smartphone in railroad communications is to eliminate errors due to radio and pronunciation deficiencies. Previous studies analyzed the communication environment of the dispatcher in order to address questions based upon data link becoming a means for sending and receiving information in railroad operations. These studies have examined what kind of information is appropriate for each medium (voice and visual), and by what criteria a dispatcher will select which communication medium. Building on these studies, this work presents a comparison between a radio and data link mediums for a long communication of a characteristic type: assignment of a form D. This thesis reports on the on site testing of the data link system which proved to be useful and efficient in certain aspects of railroad applications. The new system was faster and more effective than the radio communication when used to convey long messages such as filling out Form Ds. The radio communication was faster than the datalink for confirmation communications that only require yes/no answers. One reason for this difference appears to be the users' unfamiliarity with the device. The time to convey short messages could also be reduced after the users become more proficient with the new system. The document also includes an analysis of the regulatory challenges that the new system would bring. A list or recommendations for the new regulations are presented at the end of the report.

Resumen
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master Technology: Quality in the Faculty of Engineering
The adoption of best practice methodologies within Information Communication Technology (ICT) departments, are on the increase in order to bring about quality in their day-to-day activities. Computer and Telecommunication Services (CTS) is the ICT department within Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and is in no way exempted from this. CTS adopted ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) as an Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) best practice framework for service support and service delivery.CTS implemented a Service Desk function, Incident Management process, Change Management process, Information Technology Service Continuity process, and elements of other ITSM process. ICT organisations adopt an ad hoc approach in applying continuous process improvement mechanisms in the day-to-day operation of service support and service delivery processes and functions resulting in poor service support and service delivery. The primary research objectives are to identify the best practice principles and guidelines (i.e. IT, Quality, Project Management, etc.) adopted by CTS, to assist in establishing the gaps between the current status of these processes and the desired state. Further, to determine the elements or component parts of the proposed continuous process improvement mechanisms, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the implementation of such mechanisms, and to define metrics for proving measurable improvements to the processes. The adoption of continuous process improvement mechanisms will assist in mapping ITSM with other best practice methodologies (i.e. Quality and Project Management). A qualitative method will be used to review the existing processes and/or functions and highlight evidence of adherence to best practice methodologies. A quantitative method will be used to collect data from the CTS Service Desk and to conduct user surveys to determine current levels of service. These results will underline the elements and component parts needed for continuous process improvement.

Today, video communication is common in private and professional communication, and during corona pandemic 2020, its use has increased significantly. This has raised the issue on the fact that video communication is not as perceived as natural as a face-to-face conversation, and the lack of eye contact can be a contributing cause. This study has developed and evaluated a video communication design where it was possible for users to have eye contact. It was also possible to manipulate the camera position. The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of the design in research on eye contact, which gave the opportunity to also investigate how this affects the experience of the conversation. The study also investigated how the self-view affects experience of conversations. Twelve persons participated in the study. After a relaxed conversation, a semi-structured interview was conducted on how they experienced the different camera angles. The participants eye movements were also recorded. The result shows a significant and consistent perceived difference between different camera positions. The usual camera position with 15° decentration felt familiar and the extreme decentration of 45° position felt unreal and abnormal. When given the opportunity for eye contact, the participants felt significantly more present in the conversation with increased sense of reality. The Self-view was perceived as an obstacle to feel present, but gave a sense of control. These results are discussed in relation to the need to adapt video communication to social processes and its biological origin, e.g. the eyes function for we-ness and the implication of seeing oneself during conversations.

Resumen
Missing from extant social support literature is a measure of what support providers say to other individuals with problems. To address this void, a two-stage study focused on the messages of potential support providers and how recipients perceived those messages as Helpful, Comforting, and Appropriate. Responses elicited from subjects (n=587) in Stage I were coded according to content (emotional, cognitive, emotional/cognitive) and given to Stage 2 subjects (n=433) for assessment. The results indicate that supporters and recipients react discriminately according to relationship, problem type, and sex. The Measure of Supportive Communication developed in this study demonstrated better than adequate reliability.

Mass Media and Communication
Ph.D.
Questions regarding the concept of legitimacy are central to social and political science. Exploring how people justify legitimacy and why people grant legitimacy to leadership and collective decisions in groups, organizations, and nations is generally agreed to be essential to scholarship on legitimacy. One line of research finds contributing factors in bureaucratic effectiveness and efficiency that can provide substantive benefits to people. Another line of research expands legitimacy to procedural elements such as fairness of treatment or quality of communication (deliberation) in the decision making process. This dissertation intends to contribute to the research of legitimacy and hopes to further the understanding of communication's role in decision outcome legitimacy by incorporating two sets of contributing factors: Performance factors and communication factors. This will enable a side-by-side comparison of instrumentalist and communicative factors in predicting legitimation. In addition, the study will observe the quality of the communication environment as a contextual variable upon which the relationship between performance elements and decision outcome legitimacy depends. Specifically, how the communication environment moderates the strength of the relationship between output of public service in a certain domain and the perceived legitimacy of the decision made in the same domain will be observed. Drawing on the framework from Habermas's theory of communicative action and the public sphere, the literature on deliberative democracy, and organizational studies, the project intends to observe how the communication environment or speech conditions (in Habermasian terms) may affect the legitimacy of a decision outcome, and at the same time may influence the relationship between the perceived performance in a certain public service sector and the perceived legitimacy of a decision outcome in the same sector. Using a sample of 255 adult residents in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province in southwest China, the study found that perceived government performance and perceived speech conditions were both positively related to perceived legitimacy of government decision; furthermore, perceived speech conditions moderated the relationship between the performance evaluation and legitimacy perception. These findings suggest some important insights into the role of communication in political legitimation and the evolving communication expectations in China.

Resumen
The number of electronic control units in heavy-duty vehicles has grown dramatically overthe last few decades. This has led to the use of communication buses to reduce the complexityand weight of the networks. There are reasons to believe that the de facto standardcommunication interface in the automotive industry, the Controller Area Network, is obsoletein some areas. Hence an evaluation of available communication interfaces is needed. This study focuses on lower levels of the Open Systems Interconnect (osi) model. Initially atheoretical study is presented in order to give an overview of automotive embedded systemsin general and different communication interfaces in particular. Ethernet and FlexRay areidentified as two interfaces of interest for future use in Scanias vehicles. The former is new inautomotive applications but is believed to become popular over the years to come. A possibleuse of this interface could be as a backbone to take the load off other interfaces. The use ofFlexRay in Scanias vehicles is limited because of the modular system used and the staticscheduling needed. It could however be used between mandatory ecus where the nodes andthe messages are all known beforehand. The report also contains the result from emission measurements on a number of interfacesperformed using a stripline antenna in a shielded enclosure. Strong conclusions can not bedrawn since it’s hard to tell what the transceivers, circuit boards and interfaces contributedto in the spectra with the method used. The FlexRay hardware is worse than for the otherinterfaces. Similarities can be seen between low-speed and high-speed can but it could becharacteristics of the transceivers used rather than the interface itself.

As the Navy has refocused its goals towards littoral warfare, mine countermeasures have become an area of special interest. The Naval Postgraduate School is developing an autonomous underwater vehicle to map shallow water minefields--a vital role in the Navy's overall plan for mine countermeasures. A key feature of the vehicle is its low cost, and to this end it uses a commercially available system called 'DiveTracker' for precise acoustic navigation and communication. This research experimentally evaluated the reliability of the DiveTracker communication system in conditions approximating those for which the vehicle is designed. It was concluded that highly reliable communication of short commands will be restricted to relatively short separation distances between nodes. The very shallow water acoustic channel is highly variant in both signal attenuation and background noise levels. The maximum range is limited by the background noise while the probability of correct message reception depends on the received signal to noise ratio. Initial data indicates that the low cost unit under development cannot communicate beyond 500 meters with a probability of a single roundtrip success greater than 34 percent. Several options are available for its improvement.

Underwater acoustic communication is an extremely complex field that faces many challenges due to the time-varying nature of the ocean environment. Vector sensors are a proven technology that when utilizing their directional sensing capabilities allows us to minimize the effect of interfering noise sources. A traditional pressure sensor array has been the standard for years but suffers at degraded signal to noise ratios (SNR) and requires maneuvers or a lengthly array aperture to direction find. This thesis explores the effect of utilizing a vector sensor array to steer to the direction of signal arrival and the effect it has on equalization of the signal at degraded SNRs. It was demonstrated that utilizing a single vector sensor we were able steer to the direction of arrival and improve the ability of an equalizer to determine the transmitted signal. This improvement was most prominent when the SNR was degraded to levels of 0 and 10 dB where the performance of the vector sensor outperformed that of the pressure sensor in nearly 100% of cases. Finally, this performance improvement occurred with a savings in computational expense.
