Abstract Since its prediction in 1974, the measurement of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE υNS) has been a great challenge for many experimentalists. One of the main factors is the small recoil energies of the nucleus produced by this interaction, which is dominant for energies ≾ 50 MeV, for medium target masses. The detection was finally achieved by the COHERENT experiment in 2017 and several other experiments are currently close to performing this measurement for different neutrino energies and sources, thanks to the development of very low threshold and background detectors. Measuring CEυNS opens up new possibilities to test the Standard Model and to look for new physics beyond it. The purpose of this contribution is to provide a brief overview of the state-of-the-art on this subject, with a focus on some of the latest experimental results and future perspectives.

Abstract The discovery of coherent neutrino–nucleus scattering in the COHERENT experiment opened a source of new information for fundamental investigations in the realms of neutrino and nuclear physics, as well as in the realms of searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Owing to substantial momentum transfers, a feature peculiar to the kinematical region of this experiment is that the effect of coherence is mixed with a sizable incoherent contribution rather than being seen in a pure form. On one hand, this leads to additional systematic uncertainties in studying the neutrino component of the coherence effect as such. On the other hand, this makes it possible to study a dynamical transition between the coherent and incoherent scattering modes and, in principle, to separate them experimentally. In our opinion, a consistent measurement of the coherent and incoherent cross sections for (anti)neutrino scattering on a nucleus in the same experiment seems a unique possibility, and its implementation would of course provide new data for neutrino physics, as well as for nuclear and new physics. In the present study, it is shown that this possibility is implementable not only in experiments that explore coherent neutrino and antineutrino scattering on various nuclei at accelerators, where the neutrino energy reaches several hundred MeV units but also in reactor experiments, where antineutrino energies do not exceed 10 MeV. The respective estimation is based on the approach that controls qualitatively a ‘‘smooth transition’’ of the cross section for (anti)neutrino–nucleus scattering from a coherent (or elastic) to an incoherent (inelastic) mode. In the former case, the target nucleus remains in the initial quantum state, while, in the latter case, its quantum state changes. Observation of a specific number of photons that have rather high energies and which remove the excitation of the nucleus after its inelastic interaction with (anti)neutrinos is proposed to be used as a signal from such an inelastic process. An upper limit on the number of such photons is obtained in this study.

Resumen
The process of neutral-current coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, consistent with the Standard Model (SM) expectation, has been recently measured by the COHERENT experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source. On the basis of the observed signal and our nuclear calculations for the relevant Cs and I isotopes, the extracted constraints on both conventional and exotic neutrino physics are updated. The present study concentrates on various SM extensions involving vector and tensor nonstandard interactions as well as neutrino electromagnetic properties, with an emphasis on the neutrino magnetic moment and the neutrino charge radius. Furthermore, models addressing a light sterile neutrino state are examined, and the corresponding regions excluded by the COHERENT experiment are presented.

Abstract A thorough understanding of neutrino–nucleus scattering physics is crucial for the successful execution of the entire US neutrino physics program. Neutrino–nucleus interaction constitutes one of the biggest systematic uncertainties in neutrino experiments—both at intermediate energies affecting long-baseline deep underground neutrino experiment, as well as at low energies affecting coherent scattering neutrino program—and could well be the difference between achieving or missing discovery level precision. To this end, electron–nucleus scattering experiments provide vital information to test, assess and validate different nuclear models and event generators intended to test, assess and validate different nuclear models and event generators intended to be used in neutrino experiments. Similarly, for the low-energy neutrino program revolving around the coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering (CEvNS) physics at stopped pion sources, such as at ORNL, the main source of uncertainty in the evaluation of the CEvNS cross section is driven by the underlying nuclear structure, embedded in the weak form factor, of the target nucleus. To this end, parity-violating electron scattering (PVES) experiments, utilizing polarized electron beams, provide vital model-independent information in determining weak form factors. This information is vital in achieving a percent level precision needed to disentangle new physics signals from the standard model expected CEvNS rate. In this white paper, we highlight connections between electron- and neutrino–nucleus scattering physics at energies ranging from 10 s of MeV to a few GeV, review the status of ongoing and planned electron scattering experiments, identify gaps, and lay out a path forward that benefits the neutrino community. We also highlight the systemic challenges with respect to the divide between the nuclear and high-energy physics communities and funding that presents additional hurdles in mobilizing these connections to the benefit of neutrino programs.

AbstractThe NUCLEUS experiment aims for the detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at a nuclear power reactor with gram-scale, ultra-low-threshold cryogenic detectors. This technology leads to a miniaturization of neutrino detectors and allows to probe physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. A 0.5 g NUCLEUS prototype detector, operated above ground in 2017, reached an energy threshold for nuclear recoils of below 20 eV. This sensitivity is achieved with tungsten transition edge sensors which are operating at temperatures of 15 mK and are mainly sensitive to non-thermal phonons. These small recoil energies become accessible for the first time with this technology, which allows collecting large-statistics neutrino event samples with a moderate detector mass. A first-phase cryogenic detector array with a total mass of 10 g enables a 5-sigma observation of coherent scattering within several weeks. We identified a suitable experimental site at the Chooz Nuclear Power Plant and performed muon and neutron background measurements there. The operation of a NUCLEUS cryogenic detector array at such a site requires highly efficient background suppression. NUCLEUS plans to use an innovative technique consisting of separate cryogenic anticoincidence detectors against surface backgrounds and penetrating (gamma, neutron) radiation. We present first results from prototypes of these veto detectors and their operation in coincidence with a NUCLEUS target detector.

Abstract Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE υNS) has an important role in measuring neutrino properties and proving non-standard interactions. Neutrino Elastic-scattering Observation with NaI(Tl) experiment (NEON) aims to detect this CE υNS in a NaI(Tl) crystal using reactor anti-electron neutrino at Hanbit nuclear power plant. NEON detector, which is installed 24 m distance away from the active reactor core, consists of a 15 kg NaI(Tl) in the radiation shielding structures including a 700 L liquid scintillator. Data taking has started from December 2020, which includes 1-month reactor-off period. We report the current status of NEON experiment in this talk.

The dark matter direct detection experiment in Korea started and developed for the test of the DAMA experiment. With more than 20 years of research and development in the low-background and low-threshold scintillating detector, we move forward to the world best sensitivities for the low-mass dark matter searches as well as the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering observation. We present current achievement and future prospect of the scintillating detectors for the dark matter and neutrino physics in Korea.

The NUCLEUS experiment, currently being commissioned at the Technical University of Munich, is designed to observe coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) from reactor neutrinos and measure its cross-section with a percent-level precision at recoil energies below 100 eV. As a Standard Model process, CEνNS provides a unique probe into neutrino properties, potential new physics, and background suppression techniques relevant to dark matter experiments. The experiment utilizes gram-scale cryogenic calorimeters operating at 10 mK with an energy threshold of 20 eV. Situated at a shallow overburden of 3 m of water equivalent, the experimental site necessitates an advanced shielding strategy combining active vetoes and passive layers to reduce background rates to approximately 100counts/(kg·day·keV), as confirmed by full setup simulations. The commissioning phase has successfully demonstrated the stable operation of the cryogenic target detectors, achieving baseline resolutions below 10 eV, and the integration of the various shielding systems. Following this milestone, the experiment is set to transition to the EdF Chooz B nuclear reactor in France in 2025, where it will enable precise measurements of CEνNS, contributing to the understanding of neutrino interactions and advancing the field of astroparticle physics.

The prospects of extracting new physics signals in coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering (CEνNS) processes are limited by the precision with which the underlying nuclear structure physics, embedded in the weak nuclear form factor, is known. We present calculations of charge and weak nuclear form factors and CEνNS cross sections on 12C, 16O, 40Ar, 56Fe and 208Pb nuclei. We obtain the proton and neutron densities, and charge and weak form factors by solving Hartree–Fock (HF) equations with a Skyrme (SkE2) nuclear potential. We validate our approach by comparing 208Pb and 40Ar charge form factor predictions with available elastic electron scattering data. Since CEνNS experiments at stopped-pion sources are also well suited to measure inelastic charged–current and neutral–current neutrino–nucleus cross sections, we also present calculations for these processes, incorporating a continuum Random Phase Approximation (CRPA) description on top of the HF–SkE2 picture of the nucleus. Providing both coherent as well as inelastic cross sections in a consistent framework, we aim at obtaining a reliable and detailed comparison of the strength of these processes in the energy region below 100 MeV. Furthermore, we attempt to gauge the level of theoretical uncertainty pertaining to the description of the 40Ar form factor and CEνNS cross sections by comparing relative differences between recent microscopic nuclear theory and widely-used phenomenological form factor predictions. Future precision measurements of CEνNS will potentially help in constraining these nuclear structure details that will in turn improve prospects of extracting new physics.

Abstract The recent detection of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) opens the possibility to use neutrinos to explore physics beyond standard model with small size detectors. However, the CEνNS process generates signals at the few keV level, requiring very sensitive detecting technologies for its detection. The European Spallation Source (ESS) has been identified as an optimal source of low energy neutrinos offering an opportunity for a definitive exploration of all phenomenological applications of CEνNS. GanESS will use a high-pressure noble gas time projection chamber to measure CEνNS at ESS in gaseous Xe, Ar and Kr. Such technique appears extraordinarily promising for detecting the process, although characterization of the response to few-keV nuclear recoils will be necessary. With this goal, we are currently commissioning GaP, a small prototype capable of operating up to 50 bar. GaP will serve to fully evaluate the low energy response of the technique, with a strong focus on measuring the quenching factor for the different noble gases that will later be used at GanESS. An overview of the GanESS project with a focus on the status of GaP and its short-term plans is presented.

Abstract A new measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) on liquid argon (LAr) has been recently reported by the COHERENT experiment. Relying on the new data, we update the status of CEvNS-induced constraints by considering various physics applications, within and beyond the Standard Model. In particular, we explore the implications of the COHERENT-LAr data for electroweak and nuclear physics as well as for interesting scenarios beyond the SM such as NSIs and electromagnetic neutrino properties. We show that compared to the existing constraints derived from the first CEvNS measurement on CsI, the new LAr-dataset yields improved constraints in all cases.

Several experimental proposals expect to confirm the recent measurement of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS). Motivated in particular by the next generation experiments of the COHERENT collaboration, we study their sensitivity to different tests of the Standard Model and beyond. We analyze the resolution that can be achieved by each future proposed detector in the measurement of the weak mixing angle; we also perform a similar analysis in the context of Nonstandard Interaction (NSI) and in the case of oscillations into a sterile neutrino state. We show that future perspectives are interesting for these types of new physics searches.

Liquid xenon is one of the leading targets to search for dark matter via its elastic scattering on nuclei or electrons. Due to their low-threshold and low-background capabilities, liquid xenon detectors can also detect coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering (CEνNS) or neutrino–electron scattering. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of a compact and movable liquid xenon detector with an active target mass of O(10∼100) kg and single-electron sensitivity to detect CEνNS from anti-neutrinos from a nuclear reactor. Assuming a single- and few-electron background rate at the level achieved by the XENON10/100 experiments, we expect a 5-σ detection of CEνNS with less than 400 kg-days of exposure. We further investigate the sensitivity of such a detector to neutrino magnetic moment with neutrino electron scattering. If an electronic recoil background rate of 0.01∼0.1 events/keV/kg/day above 1 keV can be achieved with adequate shielding, a liquid xenon detector can reach a neutrino magnetic moment sensitivity of 10−11μB, which would improve upon the current most-constraining laboratory limits from the GEMMA and Borexino experiments. Additionally, such a detector would be able to probe the region compatible with a magnetic moment interpretation of the low-energy excess electronic recoil events recently reported by XENON1T.

Realistic nuclear structure calculations are presented for the event rates due to coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS), assuming neutrinos from pion-decay at-rest, from nuclear reactors and from Earth’s interior. We focus on the currently interesting Germanium isotopes, 70,73,76Ge, which constitute detector materials of the recently planned CEνNS experiments. We study in addition the potential use of 64,70Zn and 28Si isotopes as promising CEνNS detectors. From nuclear physics perspectives, recently, calculations have been carried out within the framework of the deformed shell-model (DSM), based on realistic nuclear forces, and assessed on the reproducibility of spectroscopic nuclear properties. The high confidence level acquired by their agreement with experimental results and by their comparison with other mostly phenomenological calculations encouraged the use of DSM to extract predictions for the CEνNS event rates of the above isotopes. Our detailed estimation of the nuclear physics aspects of the recently observed neutral current coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering may shed light on unravelling the still remaining uncertainties for the CEνNS process within and beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract We present results of several measurements of CsI[Na] scintillation response to 3–60 keV energy nuclear recoils performed by the COHERENT collaboration using tagged neutron elastic scattering experiments and an endpoint technique. Earlier results, used to estimate the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) event rate for the first observation of this process achieved by COHERENT at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), have been reassessed. We discuss corrections for the identified systematic effects and update the respective uncertainty values. The impact of updated results on future precision tests of CEvNS is estimated. We scrutinize potential systematic effects that could affect each measurement. In particular we confirm the response of the H11934-200 Hamamatsu photomultiplier tube (PMT) used for the measurements presented in this study to be linear in the relevant signal scale region.

Abstract The Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Interaction Experiment (CONNIE) uses fully depleted high-resistivity CCDs (charge coupled devices) with the aim of detecting the coherent elastic scattering of reactor antineutrinos off silicon nuclei and probing physics beyond the Standard Model. The analysis of the 2016‖2018 data allowed us to set an upper limit at 95% confidence level on the coherent scattering rate, which was used to place stringent constraints on simplified extensions of the Standard Model with light scalar and vector mediators. In 2019, the experiment operated with an improved readout and a lower energy threshold of 50 eV. We present the performance of the CONNIE experiment, new results of the analysis of 2019 data, and the recent update of the detector with skipper CCDs.

Abstract Neutrino Nucleus Elastic scattering (υAel ) is a well understood Standard Model process. A generic scale of Eυ <50 MeV is usually taken to characterize the requirement of coherency in vAel process. To quantify this transition, we formulated a universal parametrization of the degree of coherency. The TEXONO experiment is pursuing measurement of the υAel interactions with the reactor neutrinos at Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory (KSNL), in a kinematic regime where the Quantum Mechanical coherency is complete. Point-contact germanium detectors at sub-keV sensitivities are adopted to detect the low-energy nuclear recoils in υAel . We report our latest status and plan of this program. A complementing line of research is on the formulation of a universal scheme to quantify the QM coherency effects in υAel , and study their dependence on experimental configurations. Constraints from existing measurements from COHERENT experiment are presented.

Abstract The recent detection of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEυNS) opens the possibility to use neutrinos to explore physics beyond standard model with small size detectors. However, the CEυNS process generates signals at the few keV level, requiring of very sensitive detecting technologies for its detection. The European Spallation Source (ESS) has been identified as an optimal source of low energy neutrinos offering an opportunity for a definitive exploration of all phenomenological applications of CEυNS. In this project I propose to apply the high pressure gas TPC technology to the detection of the CEυNS process at the ESS. This will require the development of very low-energy detectors and to improve the current knowledge of the quenching factor for nuclear recoils in gas at keV energies. The major goal of this project is to build a 20 kg xenon gaseous detector and operate it at the ESS, such detector will provide more than 7,000 CEυNS events per year, overtaking the sensitivities of much larger detectors in current spallations sources.

In several extensions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics (SMPP), the neutrinos acquire electromagnetic properties such as the electric millicharge. Theoretical and experimental bounds have been reported in the literature for this parameter. In this work, we first carried out a statistical analysis by using data from reactor neutrino experiments, which include elastic neutrino-electron scattering (ENES) processes, in order to obtain both individual and combined limits on the neutrino electric millicharge (NEM). Then, we performed a similar calculation to show an estimate of the sensitivity of future experiments of reactor neutrinos to the NEM, by involving coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CENNS). In the first case, the constraints achieved from the combination of several experiments are − 1.1 × 1 0 − 12 e < q ν < 9.3 × 1 0 − 13 e (90% C.L.), and in the second scenario, we obtained the bounds − 1.8 × 1 0 − 14 e < q ν < 1.8 × 1 0 − 14 e (90% C.L.). As we will show here, these combined analyses of different experimental data can lead to stronger constraints than those based on individual analysis, where CENNS interactions would stand out as an important alternative to improve the current limits on NEM.

Event detection rates for WIMP-nucleus interactions are calculated for 71Ga, 73Ge, 75As, and 127I (direct dark matter detectors). The nuclear structure form factors, which are rather independent of the underlying beyond the Standard Model particle physics scenario assumed, are evaluated within the context of the deformed nuclear shell model (DSM) based on Hartree-Fock nuclear states. Along with the previously published DSM results for 73Ge, the neutrino-floor due to coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS), an important source of background to dark matter searches, is extensively calculated. The impact of new contributions to CEνNS due to neutrino magnetic moments and Z′ mediators at direct dark matter detection experiments is also examined and discussed. The results show that the neutrino-floor constitutes a crucial source of background events for multi-ton scale detectors with sub-keV capabilities.

We review the prospects of using coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CENNS) to measure the nuclear neutron form factor. The merits and limitations of several potential neutrino sources are discussed. The effects of detector shape uncertainty and detector size on a measurement of the neutron RMS radius are also considered. We find that the detector spectral shape uncertainty is the important limiting factor on a measurement of the neutron RMS radius. In order to measure the neutron RMS radius to 5%, the spectral shape uncertainty of the detector needs to be known to 1% or better.

Abstract Neutrinos from supernova (SN) bursts can give rise to detectable number of nuclear recoil (NR) events through the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEυNS) process in large scale liquid xenon detectors designed for direct dark matter search, depending on the SN progenitor mass and distance. Here we show that in addition to the direct NR events due to CEvNS process, the SN neutrinos can give rise to additional nuclear recoils due to the elastic scattering of neutrons produced through inelastic interaction of the neutrinos with the xenon nuclei. We find that the contribution of the supernova neutrino-induced neutrons (υIn) can significantly modify the total xenon NR spectrum at large recoil energies compared to that expected from the CEυNS process alone. Moreover, for recoil energies ≳ 20 keV, dominant contribution is obtained from the (υIn) events. We numerically calculate the observable S1 and S2 signals due to both CEvNS and vIn processes for a typical liquid xenon based detector, accounting for the multiple scattering effects of the neutrons in the case of υIn, and find that sufficiently large signal events, those with S1≳50 photo-electrons (PE) and S2≳2300 PE, come mainly from the υIn scatterings.

Nuclear Power Reactors are the most powerful neutrino sources as they emit large numbers of antineu- trinos, at energies up to 10 MeV. The reactor neutrino detection is very important for fundamental physics goals, as well as for applications, among them being the possibility to determine the isotopic composition of the reactor’s core. This could lead to application of neutrino spectroscopy for reactor monitoring, either for improving the reliability of operation of power reactors or as a method to accomplish certain safeguard and non-proliferation objectives. We present here the conditions on detecting neutrinos coming from nuclear reactors with the Spherical Proportional Counter (SPC), by exploiting the coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering.

Abstract Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) offers a unique way to study neutrino properties and to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The NUCLEUS experiment aims to measure CEνNS of reactor anti-neutrinos down to unprecedented low nuclear recoil energies. The novel gram-scale cryogenic detectors feature an ultra-low energy threshold of ≤20eVnr and a rise time of a few 100 μs which allows the operation above ground. The fiducialization of the detectors provides an effective discrimination of ambient γ- and surface backgrounds. Furthermore, the use of multiple targets promises a high physics potential. The NUCLEUS experiment will be located at a new experimental site at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France, providing a high anti-neutrino flux of 1.7 ⋅ 10 12 ν ¯ e / ( s ⋅ cm 2 ) . The commissioning of the experimental setup with a comprehensive background measurement is planned for 2022.

We exploit the full coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) dataset reported by the COHERENT Collaboration. In particular, we combine the most recent CsI-2021 measurement with the liquid argon (LAr) measurement from the 2020 campaign. In view of the increased statistics, the refined treatment of quenching effects and the better understanding of the error budget, the present study leads to improved constraints for a set of interactions within and beyond the Standard Model (SM). In terms of a dedicated statistical analysis we provide up-to-date limits on the weak the weak mixing angle and the neutron nuclear radius. With respect to beyond the SM phenomena, we improve previous bounds on electromagnetic neutrino properties and novel light mediator scenarios.

In this paper, we propose a physics-based method of prediction high-energy solar flares (SFs) with the help of neutrino detectors utilizing coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS). The behavior of neutrino beams passing through coupled sunspots (CSs) being the sources of future SFs is investigated. We consider the evolution of left-handed electron neutrino νeL and muon neutrino νμL beams formed in the convective zone after the passage of the Micheev – Smirnov – Wolfenstein resonance. It is assumed that the neutrinos possess the charge radius, the magnetic and anapole moments while the CS magnetic field is vortex, nonhomogeneous and has twisting. Estimations of the weakening of the neutrino beams after traversing the resonant layers are given. It is shown that for SFs this weakening could be registered by neutrino detectors of the second generation only when neutrinos have the Dirac nature.

Abstract Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering was first experimentally established five years ago by the COHERENT experiment using neutrinos from the spallation neutron source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The first evidence of observation of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering with reactor antineutrinos has now been reported by the Dresden-II reactor experiment, using a germanium detector. In this paper, we present constraints on a variety of beyond the Standard Model scenarios using the new Dresden-II data. In particular, we explore the constraints imposed on neutrino non-standard interactions, neutrino magnetic moments, and several models with light scalar or light vector mediators. We also quantify the impact of their combination with COHERENT (CsI and Ar) data. In doing so, we highlight the synergies between spallation neutron source and nuclear reactor experiments regarding beyond the Standard Model searches, as well as the advantages of combining data obtained with different nuclear targets. We also study the possible signal from beyond the Standard Model scenarios due to elastic scattering off electrons (which would pass selection cuts of the COHERENT CsI and the Dresden-II experiments) and find more stringent constraints in certain parts of the parameter space than those obtained considering coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering.

We analyze data from the CsI, liquid Ar and Ge detectors of the COHERENT experiment and confirm within 1.5σ that the measured elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering cross section is proportional to the square of the number of neutrons in the nucleus, as expected for coherent scattering in the standard model. Abstract In this work we consider sub-leading O(Z 2 α 3) corrections to coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering (CEvNS). These corrections are not negligible by power counting since nuclei with large coherent cross sections have sizeable nuclear charges e.g. Zα ∼ 0.4. We find that the corrections are much smaller than naive power counting in Zα would suggest and that Coulomb corrections do not substantially alter predictions for CEvNS in the Standard Model. We comment on similarities to older literature on mesonic and muonic atoms.
