Texto completoThis PhD dissertation deals with the mitigation of the impact of the Narrowband PowerLine communication (NB-PLC) channel impairments e.g., periodic impulsive noise and narrowband noise, by applying the error/erasure correction coding techniques. After an introduction to the concept of smart grid, the NB-PLC channels are characterized precisely and models that describe these channels are presented. The performance of rank metric codes, simple or concatenated with convolutional codes, that are particularly interesting to combat criss-cross errors on the NB-PLC networks are simulated and compared with Reed- Solomon (already present in several NB-PLC standards) codes performance. Fountain codes that can adapt to any channel erasures statistics are used for the NB-PLC networks and the performance of cooperative schemes based on these fountain codes on linear multi-hop networks are studied. Finally, algorithms to combine the network coding and fountain codes for the particular topology of PLC networks for the smart grid are proposed and evaluated

Texto completoNetwork coding is a paradigm that allows an efficient use of the capacity of communication networks. It maximizes the throughput in a multi-hop multicast communication and reduces the delay. In this thesis, we focus our attention to the integration of the network coding framework to multimedia applications, and in particular to advanced systems that provide enhanced video services to the users. Our contributions concern several instances of advanced multimedia communications: an efficient framework for transmission of a live stream making joint use of network coding and multiple description coding; a novel transmission strategy for lossy wireless networks that guarantees a trade-off between loss resilience and short delay based on a rate-distortion optimized scheduling of the video frames, that we also extended to the case of interactive multi-view streaming; a distributed social caching system that, using network coding in conjunction with the knowledge of the users' preferences in terms of views, is able to select a replication scheme such that to provide a high video quality by accessing only other members of the social group without incurring the access cost associated with a connection to a central server and without exchanging large tables of metadata to keep track of the replicated parts; and, finally, a study on using blind source separation techniques to reduce the overhead incurred by network coding schemes based on error-detecting techniques such as parity coding and message digest generation. Texto completoEven if packet networks have significantly evolved in the last decades, packets are still transmitted from one hop to the next as unalterable pieces of data. Yet this fundamental paradigm has recently been challenged by new techniques like network coding, which promises network performance and reliability enhancements provided nodes can mix packets together. Wireless networks rely on various network technologies such as WiFi and LTE. They can however be unreliable due to obstacles, interferences, and these issues are worsened in wireless mesh network topologies with potential network relays. In this work, we focus on the application of intra-flow network coding to unicast flows in wireless networks. The main objective is to enhance reliability of data transfers over wireless links, and discuss deployment opportunities and performance. First, we propose a redundancy lower bound and a distributed opportunistic algorithm, to adapt coding to network conditions and allow reliable data delivery in a wireless mesh. We believe that application requirements have also to be taken into account. Since network coding operations introduce a non negligible cost in terms of processing and memory resources, we extend the algorithm to consider the physical constraints of each node. Then, we study the interactions of intra-flow coding with TCP and its extension MPTCP. Network coding can indeed enhance the performances of TCP, which tends to perform poorly over lossy wireless links. We investigate the pratical impact of fairness issues created when running coded TCP flows besides legacy non-coded TCP flows. Finally, we explore two different ways to enhance the performance of MPCTP in wireless environments : running it over network coding, and implementing the coding process directly in MPTCP while keeping it fully TCP-compatible

Texto completoWe consider Delay Tolerant Mobile Social Networks (DTMSN), made of wireless nodes with intermittent connections and clustered into social communities. This thesis deals with the analysis and design of information transfer strategies in DTMSN. It is mostly dedicated to investigate the use of Inter-Session Network Coding (ISNC) towards this goal. Network coding is a generalization of routing and ISNC is known as a difficult optimization problem in general, specifically because it can easily get detrimental, compared to no coding, if not designed carefully. The first part of this thesis addresses theoretically the optimization problem of the (non-ISNC) routing policy in DTMSNs. We generalize the existing results for homogeneous topologies. The second part of the thesis designs and models a parameterized pairwise ISNC control policy that encompasses both routing and coding controls with an energy constraint. In order to tackle heuristically the optimization problem, the third chapter presents an experimental study of pairwise ISNC to investigate when it can be beneficial or detrimental. We examine the impact on ISNC performance of a number of parameters, such as the constraint on the maximum number of copies per packet, the network load, the buffer size of the relay nodes and the buffer management policies. The fourth chapter addresses the design of decentralized coding criteria allowing to trigger online session mixing if ISNC may be beneficial. We test these coding criteria on both toy topologies and real-world traces, pointing out and explaining the limits of our approach

Texto completoIn the domain of satellite networks, the emergence of low-cost interactive terminals motivates the need to develop and implement multiple access protocols able to support different user profiles. In particular, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have recently proposed random access protocols such as Contention Resolution Diversity Coded ALOHA (CRDSA) and Irregular Repetition Slotted ALOHA (IRSA). These methods are based on physical-layer network coding and successive interference cancellation in order to attempt to solve the collisions problem on a return channel of type Slotted ALOHA.This thesis aims to provide improvements of existing random access methods. We introduce Multi-Slot Coded Aloha (MuSCA) as a new generalization of CRDSA. Instead of transmitting copies of the same packet, the transmitter sends several parts of a codeword of an error-correcting code ; each part is preceded by a header allowing to locate the other parts of the codeword. At the receiver side, all parts transmitted by the same user, including those are interfered by other signals, are involved in the decoding. The decoded signal is then subtracted from the total signal. Thus, the overall interference is reduced and the remaining signals are more likely to be decoded. Several methods of performance analysis based on theoretical concepts (capacity computation, density evolution) and simulations are proposed. The results obtained show a significant gain in terms of throughput compared to existing access methods. This gain can be even more increased by varying the codewords stamping rate. Following these concepts, we also propose an application of physical-layer network coding based on the superposition modulation for a deterministic access on a return channel of satellite communications. We observe a gain in terms of throughput compared to more conventional strategies such as the time division multiplexing

Texto completoThe Interest of network coding to improve the throughput or to optimize the use of the network capacity was clearly shown in various contexts. Certain work in particular showed that network coding allows to decrease the end-to-end transmission delay (maximum and average) of a package. This is due to the fact that the processing simultaneous of several packages in a coding node allows to reduce the maximum time spent by the packets in the buffers compared to a classical routing. In this thesis, we consider the application of network coding in the context of the networks providing quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees. Our contributions include the following. First, we propose three network coding strategies ensuring a level of QoS guaranteed expressed in terms of end-in-end delay. The first strategy, called "Network-Oriented Strategy (NOS)", is a random coding strategy. This coding strategy simply consists in combining the inputs packets present in the buffer of a node. It allows minimizing the time spent by the packets in the router's buffers. The weak point of this approach, as any random approach, is that it is not completely reliable. The two other strategies suggested implement a reliable strategy by using the concept of generation. The first, called "Flow-Oriented Strategy (FOS)" is based on the traditional definition of network coding whereas the second, called "Fast Forwarding Strategy (FFS)", allows reducing the packet's buffering delays by transferring them without awaiting all packets of the same generation. The maximum delays generated by different strategies have been evaluated at a coding node level by using network calculus. The end-to-end delay bounds have been then calculated for several types of networks. In most cases, these bounds are better than those obtained for the classical routing. The reliable network coding strategies and the routing strategy have been implemented and evaluated by simulation on networks studied previously. The results obtained show that the worst cases of end-in-end delays observed have the same behaviors as the calculated maximum theoretical bounds, thus validating the suggested strategies

Texto completoSince its first introduction in 2001, network coding has gained a significant attention from the research communities in the need of improving the way of communication in computer networks. In short, network coding is a technique which allows the nodes to combine several native packets into one coded packet for transmission (i.e, coding packets) instead of simply forwarding packets one by one. With network coding, a network can save the number of transmissions to reduce data transfer time and increase throughput. This breaks the great assumption about keeping information separate and whole. Information must not be tampered but it can be mixed, and transformed. In the scope of the thesis, we focus on two main benefits of network coding: throughput improvement and transmission reliability against random losses. For the throughput improvement, we use inter-flow network coding and extend the coding conditions. For transmission reliability, we use intra-flow network coding and suggest new coding schemes. The obtained results via NS-2 simulations are quite promising

Texto completoBitrate adaptation is a key issue when considering streaming applications involving throughput limited networks with error prone channels, as wireless networks. The emergence of recent source coding standards like the scalable extension of H. 264/AVC namely Scalable Video Coding (SVC), that allows to encode in the same bitstream a wide range of spatio-temporal and quality layers, offers new adaptation facilities. The concept of scalability, when exploited for dynamic channel adaptation purposes, raises at least two kinds of issues: how to measure network conditions and how to differentiate transmitted data in terms of distortion contribution ? In this document, we propose and compare different approaches in terms of network architecture in order to comply with different practical requirements. The first approach consists in a video streaming system that uses SVC coding in order to adapt the input stream at the radio link layer as a function of the available bandwidth, thanks to a Media Aware Network Element (MANE) that assigns priority labels to video packets. The second approach consists in not modifying the existing network infrastructure and keeping the adaptation operations in the server that exploits long term feedbacks from the client. Moreover, in this document, we present a recursive distortion model, which is used to dynamically calculate the contribution of each packet to the final distortion. Finally, in the scope of lossy compression with subband decomposition and quantization, a contribution has been proposed in order to jointly resize decoded pictures and adapt the inverse transformation matrices following quantization noise and images content

Texto completoThe application of massively multiplayer online games provides a large partof the global internet traffic. The traffic is typically encapsulated in TCPsegments of small size information (the so called payload) resulting in a highvolume of headers transmitted through the network. This implies the following: 1) the packets’ size is too small for efficient routing and; 2) thebandwidth required by the server seems to be increasing. Therefore, it isnecessary to find more efficient transmission and routing techniques to reduce the traffic’s volume and to increase the network’s efficiency in orderto support the growing number of players. On the other hand, Quality ofExperience (QoE) in the context of online games is strongly influenced byconsistency. This consistency is influenced by the quality of service (QoS) offered by the network, mainly in terms of delay, jitter and order of the packets. As a result, a solution that enhances these parameters will help in satisfyingmore players and subsequently improving QoE.The goal of this thesis is to propose solutions to enhance the QoE of onlinegames by increasing the consistency of view, reducing the delay and increasing the efficiency of the network. For consistency, we propose a cyclic networktopology. This ordered topology facilitates the implementation of transmission management and control procedures to impose a causal order betweenall players. As for the delay and the efficiency problem, some have proposed the application of Tunneling, Compression and Multiplexing (TCM)technique. However, the transmitted packets with TCM are larger than theoriginal ones, which requires more delay to transmit them and increases therisk of congestion. We propose the use of the Network Coding technique(NC) which makes it possible to increase the bit rate of the network undercertain topological and routing conditions. This technique allows intermediate nodes to encode the data they receive rather than perform a simple”store and forward” function. It can reduce the traffic load, reduce the delay and increase the network’s efficiency. In this thesis, we propose some modifications to enhance the TCM technique and evaluate its performance. Besides, we propose to add the playerspartition approach and change the topology from a tree to a forest. Afterwards, we investigate the cyclic topology. We design an optimized routingprotocol over a cycle topology based on the network coding technique andevaluate its performance in terms of delay and order. The results show thatby using NC coding, one can gain up to 14% of latency over an optimizedrouting protocol for the cycle topology without the use of network coding.Afterwards, we propose a practical implementation scenario of this solutionover a device-to-device (D2D) infrastructure. We finally validate the theoretical limits of delay using network simulations and discuss a number ofpractical constraints

The first part is devoted to study the compute-and-forward protocol in the basic multiple access channel. For this strategy, we propose an optimal solution to design efficient network codes based on solving a lattice shortest vector problem. Besides, we develop novel decoding algorithms proved numerically to outperform the traditional decoding scheme for the CF. The second part is dedicated to the design and end-to-end performance evaluation of network codes for the CF and the analog network coding in the two-way relay channel and the multi-source multi-relay channel. For each network model we study the decoding at the relay nodes and the end destination, propose search algorithms for optimal network codes for the CF and evaluate, theoretically and numerically, the end-to-end error rate and achievable transmission rate. In the last part, we study new decoders for the distributed MIMO channel termed integer forcing (if). We develop in our work efficient algorithms to select optimal if receivers parameters allowing to outperform existing suboptimal linear receivers

Texto completoThe current wireless data traffic growth cannot be handled by classical multi-hop network protocols as in interference-free wired networks, thus it has been recognized that network nodes need to cooperate in order to take advantage of source and/or channel signal correlations, which is needed to achieve fundamental capacity limits. This thesis first considers a cooperative source coding problem, namely binary source coding with coded side information (CoSI): the helper node has access to a signal that is correlated with the source and may send a compressed version on a separate link to the destination, thus rate can be saved on the main source-destination link. Using a characterization of the Hamming-space Voronoi regions of the quantizer at the helper node, an improved practical scheme based on LDPC codes is proposed. The second part of the thesis considers cooperative channel coding, where helper nodes are relays. The simplest example of such a communication is the relay channel, in which a relay node helps the source to send its message to the destination. Whereas in the source coding problem, the correlation between source and side information is given, in channel coding, the main question is to find the best relaying operation. First, a somewhat dual problem to source coding with CoSI is studied, by considering correlated noises at the relay and destination. Then, various extensions of the relay channel are characterized using upper bounds on capacity and achievable rates: the two-way relay channel with correlated noises at the relay and destinations, where two sources wish to exchange their data with the help of a relay, and the multiway relay channel with direct links, where users, grouped into fully connected clusters (users in a cluster can overhear each others' messages), wish to exchange their messages locally within a cluster with the help of one relay

Texto completoNetwork coding is a novel technique which attracts the research interest since its emergence in 2000. It was shown that network coding, combined with wireless broadcasting, can potentially improve the performance in term of throughput, energy efficiency and bandwidth utilization. Our study begins with integrating network coding with multipoint relay (MPR) technique. MPR is an efficient broadcast mechanism which has been used in many wireless protocols. We show how combining the two techniques together can reduce the number of transmitted packets and increase the throughput. We further reduce the complexity by proposing an opportunistic coding scheme which performs coding operations on the binary field. Instead of linearly combining packets, we employ arithmetic summing packets in modulo 2, which simply corresponds to XOR the corresponding bits in each packet. These operations are computationally cheap. Using neighbors state information, a node in our scheme chooses packets to encode and transmit at each transmission trying to deliver a maximum number of packets. Therefore, an exchange of the reception information between the neighbors is required. To reduce the overhead of the required feedback, we propose a new coding scheme. It uses LT-code (a type of fountain code) to eliminate the need of a perfect feedback among neighbors. This scheme performs encoding and decoding with a logarithmic complexity. We optimize LT-code to speed up the decoding process. The optimization is achieved by proposing a new degree distribution to be used during the encoding process. This distribution allows intermediate nodes to decode more symbols even when few encoded packets are received

The critical sofware parts have been replaced by specialized prototype cards. DCT (discrete cosine tranformation) and Q. V. Texto completoThis thesis takes place in the context of the spread of immersive content. For the last couple of years, immersive audio recording and playback technologies have gained momentum and have become more and more popular. New codecs are needed to handle those spatial audio formats, especially for communication applications. There are several ways to represent spatial audio scenes. In this thesis, we focused on First Order Ambisonic. The first part of our research focused on improving multi-monocoding by decorrelated each ambisonic signal component before the multi-mono coding. To guarantee signal continuity between frames, efficient quantization new mechanisms are proposed. In the second part of this thesis, we proposed a new coding concept using a power map to recreate the original spatial image. With this concept, we proposed two compressing methods. The first one is a post-processing focused on limiting the spatial distortion of the decoded signal. The spatial correction is based on the difference between the original and the decoded spatial image. This post-processing is later extended to a parametric coding method. The last part of this thesis presents a more exploratory method. This method studied audio signal compression by neural networks inspired by image compression models using variational autoencoders

Texto completoNetwork coding (NC) is a new technique in which transmitted data is encoded and decoded by the nodes of the network in order to enhance throughput and reduce delays. Using algebraic algorithms, encoding at nodes accumulates various packets in one message and decoding restores these packets. NC requires fewer transmissions to transmit all the data but more processing at the nodes. NC can be applied at any of the ISO layers. However, the focus is mainly on the network layer level. In this work, we introduce novelties to the NC paradigm with the intent of building easy to implement NC protocols in order to improve bandwidth usage, enhance QoS and reduce the impact of losing packets in lossy networks. Several challenges are raised by this thesis concerning details in the coding and decoding processes and all the related mechanisms used to deliver packets between end nodes. Notably, questions like the life cycle of packets in coding environment, cardinality of coded messages, number of bytes overhead transmissions and buffering time duration are inspected, analytically counted, supported by many theorems and then verified through simulations. By studying the packet loss problem, new theorems describing the behavior of the network in that case have been proposed and novel mechanisms to overcome this loss have been provided. In the first part of the thesis, an overview of NC is conducted since triggered by the work of Alshwede et al. NC techniques are then detailed with the focus on linear and binary NC. These techniques are elaborated and embellished with examples extracted from different scenarios to further help understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each of these techniques. In the second part, a new address correlated NC (ACNC) protocol is presented and two approaches using ACNC protocol are introduced, the centralized approach where decoding is conducted at end nodes and the distributed decoding approach where each node in the network participates in the decoding process. Centralized decoding is elaborated by first presenting its decision models and the detailed decoding procedure at end nodes. Moreover, the cardinality of received coded messages and the buffering requirements at end nodes are investigated and the concepts of aging and maturity are introduced. The distributed decoding approach is presented as a solution to reduce the overhead on end nodes by distributing the decoding process and buffering requirements to intermediate nodes. Loss and recovery in NC are examined for both centralized and distributed approaches. For the centralized decoding approach, two mechanisms to limit the impact of loss are presented. To this effect, the concept of closures and covering sets are introduced and the covering set discovery is conducted on undecodable messages to find the optimized set of packets to request from the sender in order to decode all received packets. For the distributed decoding, a new hop-to-hop reliability mechanism is proposed that takes advantage of the NC itself and depicts loss without the need of an acknowledgement mechanism

Texto completoDuring the last decade, real-time video streaming over ad-hoc networks has gathered an increasing interest, because of the attractive property of being able to deploy a visual communication system anytime and anywhere, without the need for a pre-existing infrastructure. A wide range of target applications, from military and rescue operations, to business, educational, and recreational scenarios, has been envisaged, which has created great expectations with respect to the involved technologies. The goal of this thesis is to provide an efficient and robust real-time video streaming system over mobile ad-hoc networks, proposing cross-layer solutions that overcome the limitations of both the application and network solutions available at this time. Our contributions cover several aspects of the mobile video streaming paradigm: a new multiple description video coding technique, which provides an acceptable video quality even in presence of high loss rates; a novel cross-layer design for an overlay creation and maintenance protocol, which, with a low overhead, distributedly manages a set of multicast trees, one for each description of the stream; an original distributed congestion-distortion optimisation framework, which, through a compact representation of the topology information, enables the nodes to learn the structure of the overlay and optimise their behaviour accordingly; and, finally, an integration with the emerging network coding paradigm

Texto completoIn the context of communication networks, the emergence of predictable content has brought to the fore the use of caching as a fundamental ingredient for handling the exponential growth in data volumes. This thesis aims at providing the fundamental limits of shared-cache networks where the communication to users is aided by a small set of caches. Our shared-cache model, not only captures heterogeneous wireless cellular networks, but it can also represent a model for users requesting multiple files simultaneously, and it can be used as a simple yet effective way to deal with the so-called subpacketization bottleneck of coded caching. Furthermore, we will also see how our techniques developed for caching networks can find application in the context of heterogeneous coded distributed computing

Texto completoWireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are made up of small devices limited in terms of memory, processing and energy capacity. They work interconnected and autonomously in order to monitoring a region or an object of interest. The evolution in the development of devices more powerful (with new capability such as energy harvesting and acting) and less expensive made the WSNs a crucial element in the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT). Nonetheless, assuming the new applications and services offered in the IoT scenario, new issues arise in the data management performed in the WSNs. Indeed, in this new context, WSNs have to deal with a large amount of data, now consumed on-demand, while ensure a good trade-off between its reliability and retrievability, and the energy consumption. In the scope of this thesis, we are interested in the data management in the WSN in the context of IoT realm. Specifically, we approach the problem of in-network data storage by posing the following question: How to store data for a short term in the WSNs so that the data could be easily retrieved by the consumers while ensuring the best trade-off between data reliability and conservation of energy resources? Foremost, we propose a reliable data storage scheme based on coding network, and assuming a communication model defined by the Publish/Subscribe paradigm. We validate the efficiency of our proposal by a theoretical analyses that is corroborate by a simulation evaluation. The results show that our scheme achieves a reliability of 80% in data delivery with the best cost-benefit compared to other data storage scheme. Aiming to further improve the performance of the data storage scheme proposed in our first contribution, we propose its optimization (modeling it as a Markov Decision Process (MDP)) in order to store data with optimal trade-off between reliability and communication overhead (in this context, also seen as energy consumption), and in an autonomously and adaptive way. For the best of our knowledge, our optimized data storage scheme is the only to ensure data reliability while adapt itself according to the service requirements and network condition. In addition, we propose a generalization of the mathematical model used in our first contribution, and a system model that defines the integration of WSNs performing our data storage scheme in the context for which it was envisaged, the IoT realm. Our performance evaluation shows that our optimization allows the consumers to retrieve up to 70% more packets than a scheme without optimization whereas increase the network lifetime of 43%.Finally, after being interested in finding the best trade-off between reliability and cost, we now focus on an auxiliary way to reduce the energy consumption in the sensor nodes. As our third contribution, we propose a study, in two parts, to measure how much a node activity scheduling can save energy. First, we propose an improvement in the duty cycle mechanism defined in the 802.15.4. Then, we propose a duty cycle mechanism introduced into our data storage scheme aiming at saving energy in the storage nodes. The simulation results show that our solution to the duty cycle mechanism in 802.15.4 led in considerable saving in energy costs. However, regarding duty cycle in our data storage scheme, it did not end up in more energy saving. Actually, as our optimized scheme already saves as much resource energy as possible while ensuring high reliability, the duty cycle mechanism can not improve the energy saving without compromise the data reliability. Nonetheless, this result corroborates that our scheme, indeed, performs under the optimal trade-off between reliability and communication overhead (consumption energy)

Texto completoThis thesis deals with the study and the suggestion of new solutions to improve high bit rate power line communications. A special interest is given to impulsive noise presence which is the most difficult transmission constraint to overcome. The first aim of this work is to analyze statistically measure results then to propose a simple and efficient noise model that will be used in a simulation tool to define accurately suitable noise cancellation techniques. Experimental measurements done in both Indoor and vehicle PLC channels allowed to deduce noise characteristics in the two environments, to compare these characteristics and to prove high effect of Indoor impulsive noise. ln next step, three models were studied: c1ass A of Middleton mode 1, Markov chains-based model and the stochastic approach. Then, a new hybrid model, that combines the stochastic approach and Markov chains, was proposed. This model is simple, easy to implement and allows a satisfying fitting to noise temporal characteristics. Comparisons of models to measured noise show the efficiency of the hybrid approach that will be used afterward. The second aim of this work is to defme new appropriate and cost-effective methods to compensate impulsive noise effect. The frrst solution is to add a noise canceller module in the PLC system receiver. This solution was studied by proposing techniques to cancel noise by estimating its power. The second solution is to use error correction methods. ln this case, three channel coding structures were developed and their performances were studied in the presence of different impulsive noise scenarios

Texto completoIn this thesis, we have considered the rank metric codes for wireless sensor networks. Firstly, we have introduced the rank metric codes. Then, we adapted these codes, which were originally dedicated to cryptography applications, for error correction. To this end, we have studied the behavior of the family of rank metric codes in a wireless communication scenario using network coding. In this context, three types of errors are considered, background noise, errors injected into the network by a malicious user and erasures caused by node failures. Our analysis of the Low Rank Parity Check codes (LRPC) has shown that they are more suited to wireless sensor networks and they perform better than Gabidulin codes used in the literature. This analysis has been generalized in the multisource context and has shown that LRPC codes are more efficient in this context compared to Gabidulin codes. These contributions give a new incentive for the use of rank metric codes and offer interesting perspectives

Texto completoThe objective of this Thesis was the deployment and evaluation of an end-to-end mobile tele-echography platform used to provide remote diagnosis and care within medically isolated settings. The platform integrates new concepts that enable robotized tele-echography over commercially available 4G and beyond mobile networks for rendering diagnostically robust medical ultrasound video. It contributes to the field of Information and Communication technologies applied in the healthcare sector. The main contributions of the Thesis are: I. A systematic review on the state of the art in medical telerobotic systems was conducted based on publications of the last decade, and more specifically between the years 2004 to 2016. II. Both objective and subjective (clinical) video quality assessment demonstrated that H.264/AVC and HEVC standards can achieve diagnostically-lossless video quality at bitrates (1024 and 2048 Kbps) well within the LTE supported data rates. Earlier video coding standards (Mpeg-4 & Mpeg-2) cannot be employed for clinical diagnosis at these rates as they present loss of clinical information.III. Medical experts highly appreciated the proposed platform’s mechanical dynamic responsiveness due to the low end-to-end delay (latency) facilitated by LTE-channels. The most important limitation raised by the medical expert and prevented higher overall rating and ultimately clinical QoE was the robot initial positioning on the patient’s body and navigation towards obtaining the cardiac ultrasound. IV. Results provides a strong indication that the proposed robotized tele-echography platform can be used to provide reliable, remote diagnosis over emerging 4G and beyond wireless networks

Texto completoIn telecommunication networks, the increasing demand for new services, like video-streaming or teleconferencing, along with the now common situation where the same content is simultaneously requested by a huge number of users, stress the need for point to many data transmission protocols where one sender wishes to transmit the same data to a set of receivers. This evolution leads to the development of new routing techniques like multicast, where any node of the network can copy its received data and then send these copies, or network coding, which is a technique allowing any node to perform coding operations on its data. This thesis deals with the implementation of coding techniques in a wired multicast network. We formalize some problems naturally arising in this setting by using operations research and mathematical optimization tools. Our objective is to develop models and algorithms which could compute, at least approximately, some quantities whose purpose is to be relevant as far as forwarding data using either multicast and network coding in telecommunications networks is concerned. We hence evaluate, both in theory and numerically, the impact of introducing coding techniques in a multicast network. We specifically investigate relevant criteria, with respect to the field of telecommunications, like the maximum amount of information one can expect to convey from a source to a set of receivers through the network, the minimum congestion one can guarantee while satisfying a given demand, or the minimum loss in throughput or cost induced by a survivable routing in a network prone to failures

Texto completoThe complexity of sensory input is paralleled by the complexity of its representation in the neural activity of biological systems. Starting from the hypothesis that biological networks are tuned to achieve maximal efficiency and robustness, we investigate how efficient representation can be accomplished in networks with experimentally observed local connection probabilities and synaptic dynamics. We develop a Lasso regularized local synaptic rule, which optimizes the number and efficacy of recurrent connections. The connections that impact the efficiency the least are pruned, and the strength of the remaining ones is optimized for efficient signal representation. Our theory predicts that the local connection probability determines the trade-off between the number of population spikes and the number of recurrent synapses, which are developed and maintained in the network. The more sparsely connected networks represent signals with higher firing rates than those with denser connectivity. The variability of observed connection probabilities in biological networks could then be seen as a consequence of this trade-off, and related to different operating conditions of the circuits. The learned recurrent connections are structured, with most connections being reciprocal. The dimensionality of the recurrent weights can be inferred from the network’s connection probability and the dimensionality of the feedforward input. The optimal connectivity of a network with synaptic delays is somewhere at an intermediate level, neither too sparse nor too dense. Furthermore, when we add another biological constraint, adaptive regulation of firing rates, our learning rule leads to an experimentally observed scaling of the recurrent weights. Our work supports the notion that biological micro-circuits are highly organized and principled. A detailed examination of the local circuit organization can help us uncover the finer aspects of the principles which govern sensory representation

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis is to study the implementation of Internet-based services of Thing (IoT) and Machine to Machine (M2M) through a satellite link. This type of system have to deal with two issues: first the physical layer level: terminal related constraints (limited in power, energy, and antenna size), channel (potentially with masking and multipath) and the space segment involve the implementation of different techniques (interleaving, interference cancellation,) to ensure proper link budget allowing the communication. On the other hand , the need to provide access to the resource to a large number of terminals requiring low throughput involves the use of optimized contention access techniques , as well as taking into account the level of access issues energy saving. The access layer should also be able to interface with larger networks architectures. Internet architectures for example include supporting IP services for Iota, with sporadic services, such as the ones found in the DTN networks, or 4G architectures / 5G for the implementation of mobile services. This thesis will investigate two innovative approaches and different techniques as well as physical layer access layer (potentially coupled) to their implementation. The first scenario involves the use of a very low throughput satellite relay terminal (unlike in the conventional case found in the literature based on broadband terminals), interfacing with terrestrial access technology sensors. Innovative resource management and energy saving techniques through a dedicated access layer (not DVB) could absorb the large number of terminals in this type of architecture. The second scenario is based on direct communication with sensors / objects via satellite constellation. This approach raises the question of the efficiency of the waveform for extremely sporadic services and the reliability of communication. DLR works on this type of waveform including the definition of S -MIM. However, this solution seems to be complex and many optimizations can be made. From the access layer point of view, E -SSA (asynchronous spread spectrum communication with SIC) defined by the ESA is also interesting even if its implementation to the system and its complexity level should be consolidated

Texto completoIn this thesis, cooperative networks are studied under the assumption that the source is uncertain about the channel in operation. In the first chapter, cooperative strategies are developed for simultaneous relay channels (SRC) which consist of a set of two single relay channels out of which the channel in operation is chosen. This is equivalent to the broadcast relay channel (BRC). Bounds on the capacity region of the general BRC with two helper relays are derived. Capacity results are obtained for specific cases of semi-degraded and degraded Gaussian simultaneous relay channels. In the second chapter, the composite relay channel is considered where the channel is randomly drawn from a set of conditional distributions according to a given distribution. The transmission rate is fixed regardless of the current channel and the asymptotic error probability (EP) is characterized. A novel selective coding strategy (SCS) is introduced which enables relays to select –based on their channel measurement– the best coding scheme between Compress-and-Forward (CF) and Decode-and-Forward (DF). Generalized Noisy Network Coding theorems are shown for the case of unicast general networks where the relays use either DF or CF scheme. In the third chapter, the asymptotic behavior of EP is studied for composite multiterminal networks. The asymptotic spectrum of EP is introduced as a novel performance measure for composite networks. It is shown that every code with rate outside cut-set bound, yields EP equal to one and for the networks satisfying strong converse condition, the asymptotic spectrum of EP coincides with the outage probability

Texto completoWhile network data transmission was traditionally accomplished via routing, network coding (NC) broke this rule by allowing network nodes to perform linear combinations of the upcoming data packets. Network operations are performed in a specific Galois field of fixed size q. Decoding only involves a Gaussian elimination with the received network-coded packets. However, in practical wireless environments, NC might be susceptible to transmission errors caused by noise, fading, or interference. This drawback is quite problematic for real-time applications, such as multimediacontent delivery, where timing constraints may lead to the reception of an insufficient number of packets and consequently to difficulties in decoding the transmitted sources. At best, some packets can be recovered, while in the worst case, the receiver is unable to recover any of the transmitted packets. In this thesis, we propose joint source-network coding and decoding schemes in the purpose of providing an approximate reconstruction of the source in situations where perfect decoding is not possible. The main motivation comes from the fact that source redundancy can be exploited at the decoder in order to estimate the transmitted packets, even when some of them are missing. The redundancy can be either natural, i.e, already existing, or artificial, i.e, externally introduced.Regarding artificial redundancy, we choose multiple description coding (MDC) as a way of introducing structured correlation among uncorrelated packets. By combining MDC and NC, we aim to ensure a reconstruction quality that improves gradually with the number of received network-coded packets. We consider two different approaches for generating descriptions. The first technique consists in generating multiple descriptions via a real-valued frame expansion applied at the source before quantization. Data recovery is then achieved via the solution of a mixed integerlinear problem. The second technique uses a correlating transform in some Galois field in order to generate descriptions, and decoding involves a simple Gaussian elimination. Such schemes are particularly interesting for multimedia contents delivery, such as video streaming, where quality increases with the number of received descriptions.Another application of such schemes would be multicasting or broadcasting data towards mobile terminals experiencing different channel conditions. The channel is modeled as a binary symmetric channel (BSC) and we study the effect on the decoding quality for both proposed schemes. Performance comparison with a traditional NC scheme is also provided.Concerning natural redundancy, a typical scenario would be a wireless sensor network, where geographically distributed sources capture spatially correlated measures. We propose a scheme that aims at exploiting this spatial redundancy, and provide an estimation of the transmitted measurement samples via the solution of an integer quadratic problem. The obtained reconstruction quality is compared with the one provided by a classical NC scheme

Texto completoThe amount of data exchanged over the Internet has grown drastically over the past decades. The increasing number of users, connected devices, and the popularity of video content have surged the demand for new communication methods that can deal with the growing volume of data traffic. Information-Centric Networking (ICN) has been proposed as an alternative to traditional IP-based networks. In ICN, consumers request named content via Interest packets to the network and receive data as a response to their request without taking care of the location of the content in the network. ICN allows in-network caching and naturally supports the use of multiple paths. Nevertheless, the maximum throughput can only be achieved if the content is requested over an optimal set of multicast trees. The computation of such multicast trees is hard to scale over large dynamic networks and requires coordination among network entities. Network coding has been recently introduced in ICN to improve multi-path dissemination and caching of content without the need for coordination. The challenge in the case of network coding is to get independent coded content in response to multiple parallel Interests by one or several consumers. In this thesis, we analyze some previous works that integrate network coding and ICN and identify some key issues these works face. We introduce an efficient solution where clients add compact information to Interest packets in order to ensure linear independence of content in network-coded ICN. This thesis proposes an architecture, MICN, that provides network coding on top of an Interest-based ICN implementation: Named Data Networking (NDN). The proposed architecture helps alleviate the issues faced by network coding-enabled ICN solutions presented in the past. A novel construction called MILIC (Multiple Interests for Linearly Independent Content) is introduced that imposes constraints on how the replies to Interests are coded, intending to get linearly independent contents in response to multiple Interests. Numerical analysis and simulations illustrate that the MILIC construction performs well with network-coded NDN, and the MICN protocol yields close to optimal throughput in some scenarios. The performance of MICN compares favorably to existing protocols. It shows significant benefits when considering the total number of transmitted packets in the network and in the case of lossy links. Several modified forwarding techniques integrated into the MICN protocol are proposed to optimize the network resource utilization while keeping a high throughput. MILIC led us to consider the problem of constructing subsets of vectors from a given vector space, such that when drawing arbitrarily one vector from each subset, the selected vectors are linearly independent. This thesis considers it as a mathematical problem and studies some alternative solutions to the MILIC construction. Finally, the thesis proves that a large family of solutions to this problem are equivalent to MILIC

Texto completoImproving the network lifetime is a very challenging problem that needs to be taken into account during the deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Indeed, these networks are composed of many autonomous sensors with a limited energy supply provided by batteries which are usually difficult to recharge or replace. The scientific challenge is to ensure the operation of these networks for several years without major external intervention. To maximize the lifetime of WSNs, we first explored the possibility of introducing multiple mobile sinks. We proposed two mobility strategies. The first one provides the optimal placement in a network of small scale. The second one is based on an heuristic algorithm that ensures scalability. We were then interested in IPv6 based WSNs which use the new proposed routing protocol by IETF namely RPL. We studied this protocol, extended its capacity to manage mobile sinks andproposed an appropriate sinks mobility strategy that extends the network lifetime.Next, we proposed a novel approach which consists in applying Slepian-Wolf coding to emitted addresses in WSNs. The basic idea is to exploit the addresses correlation, guaranteed by an appropriate addresses allocation scheme, in order to reduce the header size of packets transmitted to the sink and thus improve the network lifetime. Finally, we proposed an hybrid IPv6 infrastructure for smart buildings which combines the wireless and power line technologies to guarantee energy efficiency and a longer network lifetime
