Texto completoThis PhD dissertation deals with the mitigation of the impact of the Narrowband PowerLine communication (NB-PLC) channel impairments e.g., periodic impulsive noise and narrowband noise, by applying the error/erasure correction coding techniques. After an introduction to the concept of smart grid, the NB-PLC channels are characterized precisely and models that describe these channels are presented. The performance of rank metric codes, simple or concatenated with convolutional codes, that are particularly interesting to combat criss-cross errors on the NB-PLC networks are simulated and compared with Reed- Solomon (already present in several NB-PLC standards) codes performance. Fountain codes that can adapt to any channel erasures statistics are used for the NB-PLC networks and the performance of cooperative schemes based on these fountain codes on linear multi-hop networks are studied. Finally, algorithms to combine the network coding and fountain codes for the particular topology of PLC networks for the smart grid are proposed and evaluated

Texto completoNetwork coding is a paradigm that allows an efficient use of the capacity of communication networks. It maximizes the throughput in a multi-hop multicast communication and reduces the delay. In this thesis, we focus our attention to the integration of the network coding framework to multimedia applications, and in particular to advanced systems that provide enhanced video services to the users. Our contributions concern several instances of advanced multimedia communications: an efficient framework for transmission of a live stream making joint use of network coding and multiple description coding; a novel transmission strategy for lossy wireless networks that guarantees a trade-off between loss resilience and short delay based on a rate-distortion optimized scheduling of the video frames, that we also extended to the case of interactive multi-view streaming; a distributed social caching system that, using network coding in conjunction with the knowledge of the users' preferences in terms of views, is able to select a replication scheme such that to provide a high video quality by accessing only other members of the social group without incurring the access cost associated with a connection to a central server and without exchanging large tables of metadata to keep track of the replicated parts; and, finally, a study on using blind source separation techniques to reduce the overhead incurred by network coding schemes based on error-detecting techniques such as parity coding and message digest generation. All our contributions are aimed at using network coding to enhance the quality of video transmission in terms of distortion and delay perceived

Texto completoEven if packet networks have significantly evolved in the last decades, packets are still transmitted from one hop to the next as unalterable pieces of data. Yet this fundamental paradigm has recently been challenged by new techniques like network coding, which promises network performance and reliability enhancements provided nodes can mix packets together. Wireless networks rely on various network technologies such as WiFi and LTE. They can however be unreliable due to obstacles, interferences, and these issues are worsened in wireless mesh network topologies with potential network relays. In this work, we focus on the application of intra-flow network coding to unicast flows in wireless networks. The main objective is to enhance reliability of data transfers over wireless links, and discuss deployment opportunities and performance. First, we propose a redundancy lower bound and a distributed opportunistic algorithm, to adapt coding to network conditions and allow reliable data delivery in a wireless mesh. We believe that application requirements have also to be taken into account. Since network coding operations introduce a non negligible cost in terms of processing and memory resources, we extend the algorithm to consider the physical constraints of each node. Then, we study the interactions of intra-flow coding with TCP and its extension MPTCP. Network coding can indeed enhance the performances of TCP, which tends to perform poorly over lossy wireless links. We investigate the pratical impact of fairness issues created when running coded TCP flows besides legacy non-coded TCP flows. Finally, we explore two different ways to enhance the performance of MPCTP in wireless environments : running it over network coding, and implementing the coding process directly in MPTCP while keeping it fully TCP-compatible

Texto completoWe consider Delay Tolerant Mobile Social Networks (DTMSN), made of wireless nodes with intermittent connections and clustered into social communities. This thesis deals with the analysis and design of information transfer strategies in DTMSN. It is mostly dedicated to investigate the use of Inter-Session Network Coding (ISNC) towards this goal. Network coding is a generalization of routing and ISNC is known as a difficult optimization problem in general, specifically because it can easily get detrimental, compared to no coding, if not designed carefully. The first part of this thesis addresses theoretically the optimization problem of the (non-ISNC) routing policy in DTMSNs. We generalize the existing results for homogeneous topologies. The second part of the thesis designs and models a parameterized pairwise ISNC control policy that encompasses both routing and coding controls with an energy constraint. In order to tackle heuristically the optimization problem, the third chapter presents an experimental study of pairwise ISNC to investigate when it can be beneficial or detrimental. We examine the impact on ISNC performance of a number of parameters, such as the constraint on the maximum number of copies per packet, the network load, the buffer size of the relay nodes and the buffer management policies. The fourth chapter addresses the design of decentralized coding criteria allowing to trigger online session mixing if ISNC may be beneficial. We test these coding criteria on both toy topologies and real-world traces, pointing out and explaining the limits of our approach

Texto completoIn the domain of satellite networks, the emergence of low-cost interactive terminals motivates the need to develop and implement multiple access protocols able to support different user profiles. In particular, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have recently proposed random access protocols such as Contention Resolution Diversity Coded ALOHA (CRDSA) and Irregular Repetition Slotted ALOHA (IRSA). These methods are based on physical-layer network coding and successive interference cancellation in order to attempt to solve the collisions problem on a return channel of type Slotted ALOHA.This thesis aims to provide improvements of existing random access methods. We introduce Multi-Slot Coded Aloha (MuSCA) as a new generalization of CRDSA. Instead of transmitting copies of the same packet, the transmitter sends several parts of a codeword of an error-correcting code ; each part is preceded by a header allowing to locate the other parts of the codeword. At the receiver side, all parts transmitted by the same user, including those are interfered by other signals, are involved in the decoding. The decoded signal is then subtracted from the total signal. Thus, the overall interference is reduced and the remaining signals are more likely to be decoded. Several methods of performance analysis based on theoretical concepts (capacity computation, density evolution) and simulations are proposed. The results obtained show a significant gain in terms of throughput compared to existing access methods. This gain can be even more increased by varying the codewords stamping rate. Following these concepts, we also propose an application of physical-layer network coding based on the superposition modulation for a deterministic access on a return channel of satellite communications. We observe a gain in terms of throughput compared to more conventional strategies such as the time division multiplexing
