Resumen
The influences of powder extrusion molding (PEM), die pressing and cold isostatic pressing (CIP) on the green compacts and the sintered compacts of nanocrystalline WC-6 Co composite powder produced by spray pyrogenation-continuous reduction and carburization technology were researched. The results showed that the pore volume distribution, density and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphologies of fractured surface of powder extrusion molding or die pressing followed by the cold isostatic pressing consolidation green compacts were better than that of powder extrusion molding or die pressing. The green compacts were sintered by using vacuum sintering plus hot isostatic pressing (HIP), the sintered specimens were characterized by testing density, Rockwell A hardness, saturated magnetization, coercivity force, transverse rupture strength (TRS) and atomic force microscope (AFM) images, the results showed that sintered specimen of the green body that prepared by powder extrusion molding or die pressing followed by cold isostatic pressing had excellent properties of high strength and high hardness, transverse rupture strength of sintered specimen was more than 3100 MPa, Rockwell A hardness of sintered body was more than 93. Ultrafine WC-6 Co cemented carbide rods with excellent mechanical properties and fine microstructure were obtained.

Resumen
This paper concerned with SPS (spark plasma sintering), hot pressing of sinter nanometer WC-Co powder and discussed the density, hardness, microstructures and grain sizes of the alloys sintered by different styles. The results showed that SPS could lower the sintering temperature, increased the density and circumscribed the growth of grain size of WC. Hot pressing sintering could produce high density alloys and play well on the grain growth, but its sintering temperature and sintering time were larger than SPS. Besides, the hardness of the sintered cemented alloys that was dependent on the grain size and densification could also be improved by SPS and hot pressing.

Resumen
Near-net-shape forming of zirconia powder was investigated under the combination of cold die and isostatic pressing and pressureless sintering. A combination pressing technique, i.e., die compaction under cold isostatic pressing, allowed the forming of a complex shaped ceramic powder body with better dimensional control than that achieved by cold isostatic pressing and more uniform density distribution than that by die pressing. The constitutive models proposed by Kim and co-workers were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate densification of ceramic powder under cold compaction and pressureless sintering. Finite element calculations were compared with experimental data for density distribution and deformation of zirconia powder compacts under cold combination pressing and pressureless sintering. Finite element results agreed well with experimental data.

Resumen
Cold pressing (CP) of the amorphous-like Co powder suppressed most of the XRD peaks, in particular the peak along (100) plane. The DSC curve of unmilled CP Co powder has shown a distinct sharp exothermic peak at 615C°. Upon annealing at 700C°, only the FCC phase with lattice parameter of 3.51 Å was detected by XRD. Our results implied that the exotherm at 615C° corresponds to compaction-pressure-assisted HCP to FCC first-order phase transition. The XRD analysis of 30 h milled powder revealed for the first time the FCC phase with a=3.80 Å. However, due to presence of (100) and (210) peaks, this phase is thought to be FCT with lattice parameters a=b=3.80 and c=3.07 Å. Consequently, the high-energy milling carried out in the current work induced for the first time HCP to FCT transition in Co. Upon CP of milled powder, the lattice parameter a shrunk from 3.80 to 3.75 Å. However, during annealing of the CP milled Co powder at 750C°, the FCT to FCC transition occurred, yielding the FCC phase with a=3.51 Å.

Resumen
(0, 5, 10, 15, 20) vol% CBN-WC/Co composites were consolidated by ball milling and the following hot-pressing sintering method. WC, Co and CBN powders were used as the starting materials. The effects of the CBN content on the density, microstructure and mechanical properties of CBN-WC/Co composites were investigated. The results showed that the CBN content had remarkable influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of CBN-WC/Co Composites. With the increasing content of CBN, the density decrease, while Vickers hardness and flexural strength increased initially to the maximum values and then decreased at CBN 10 vol%. When 10 vol% CBN-WC/Co powders were hot-pressing sintered at 1350°C and 20MPa for 90 min, an excellent Vickers hardness of 19.8GPa was achieved, combining a flexural strength of 682MPa.

Resumen
Two kinds of 2:17R Sm-Co alloys, Sm2(Fe,Cu,Zr,Co)17 and pure binary Sm2Co17 were prepared, and the amorphous powder was prepared by high-energy ball milling Sm-Co alloys. The bulk nanocrystalline SmCo7 was prepared by hot-pressing the amorphous powder, and the magnetic properties and phase composition were studied. Initial Sm2(Fe,Cu,Zr,Co)17 showed a large value of coercivity while the pure Sm2Co17 almost showed no coercivity. However, after ball milling the grain size of alloys decreased dramatically until completely amorphous. Two kinds of alloys showed the different phase composition and magnetic properties after hot-pressing. It was found that the pure Sm2Co17 bulk magnet showed a high coercivity Hc and had the 1:7H phase. On the other hand, the Sm2(Fe,Cu,Zr,Co)17 showed high saturation magnetization Ms and very low Hc since the Fe-Co and Sm2Co3 phase were precipitated from the alloy.

Resumen
Ti(C,N)-TiB2-Co cermets were in situ synthesized, via reactive hot pressing from the Co-Ti-C-BN system, with a Co content ranging from 6 to 22 wt%. The microstructure, relative density, hardness, and fracture toughness of the sintered compacts was investigated by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ceramic densitometry, and Vickers hardness test. The investigations indicate that during hot pressing (compacting pressure = 30 MPa), when the Co content is 14–22 wt%, the metal binder is extruded. Co and Ti are included in the extrudate, breaking the original ratio and deteriorating the properties of the sintered products. As the Co content increases from 6 wt% to 12 wt%, the porosity increases, and the relative density increases from 97.2% to 99.5%. The fracture toughness increases from 6.1 to 6.8 MPa m1/2. The Vickers hardness first increases from 1897 HV10 to the maximum 1960 HV10 and then decreases slightly to 1945 HV10.

Texto completo
Multilayer ceramic architectures generally exhibit improved mechanical properties in regards with individual monolithic constituents. In alumina-based materials, addition of kaolin can advantageously promote i) mullite crystallisation and ii) internal residual stresses by monitoring thermal expansion mismatch between layers. From powders prepared by freeze granulation whose formulations contain a reduce amount of organic additives, alumina/mullite composites shaped by uniaxial pressing have been developed and characterized. Two different kaolins are used in this study, with different characteristics in terms of crystallinity, grain shape, layering and basal/lateral face ratio. The originality of this work consisted in studying in detail the dispersion mechanisms of kaolinite suspensions in aqueous media by acoustophoresis, and in highlighting the relationship between kaolinite's electrokinetic properties, physicochemical characteristics and thermal pretreatment between 200 and 800°C. The sintering properties of mixed alumina/kaolinite formulations were studied as a function of kaolinite crystallinity and content (0-25%vol). This thesis studies the integrated chain of a ceramic process, starting with the selection of kaolinite as a raw material (acoustophoresis, MAS NMR), its crystallochemical transformation into mullite (thermal analyses, dilatometry) and its incorporation into an alumina matrix for an original architecture of multilayer materials with modified properties of toughness and fracture resistance. The multi-layer materials developed show good interfacial adhesion despite the presence of a porous zone close to the layer interface. Compared to the monolithic materials, the most efficient multilayer configurations exhibit a failure stress improved by 30%

The present Thesis evaluates modifications induced by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) after sintering on fatigue strength of WC-11Co (in weight %) composites with sintered tungsten carbide grains of 0.6 to 2 ?m. The correlation between decreasing porosity due to hot isostatic pressing process and subsequent increase on transversal rupture strength is well known. Nevertheless, there are questions related to the efficiency of HIP process to increase fatigue strength, mainly due to the existence of microstructure defects besides porosity. An increase on transversal rupture strength is reported in the literature for HIP temperatures above the eutectic point of the composite. Experiments were carried out at two different levels of HIP pressure (5.4 and 150 MPa) covering conditions existing on medium and high pressure furnaces. Two temperatures were also evaluated (1,350 and 1,430°C). The analysis of different processing conditions shows that a more uniform microstructure, without the presence of cobalt lakes, was obtained at a sintering and HIP temperature of 1,430°C. This processing condition also resulted in better statical and dynamical mechanical properties. Microstructure and mechanical properties obtained at two different HIP pressure conditions (5.4 and 150 MPa) were rather similar. Major changes in microstructure and mechanical properties were found as a function of different cycles of temperature and sintering time. Fatigue fracture surfaces were evaluated revealing major influence of microstructural defects such as regions of aligned ? phase where crack initiation and fracture propagation are favored.

Resumen
Over the past fifty years, (financial) capitalism has brought about an enormous growth in wealth. Millions around the world have been lifted out of poverty. However, the downsides of the present global economic constitution are rapidly becoming evident as well. Rising inequality, soaring debt levels, and repeated cycles of boom and bust have proven to be some of its key characteristics. After the 2008 crisis brought the financial system to the brink of collapse, new regulations, stricter supervision, higher capital requirements, and ethical codes were introduced to the sector. Today we find ourselves in the middle of another economic boom. Yet one pressing question remains: has anything changed? Have the (necessary) repairs fixed the flaws in the system? Or do we require even more fundamental reforms? This volume builds on the observation that society has co-evolved with the financial sector. We cannot simply claim that 'finance' was the sole instigator of the 2008 crisis. Society itself has become financialized; the process of replacing relations, structures of trust and reciprocity, by anonymous and systemic transactions. The volume poses vital questions with regard to this societal development. How did this happen? And more importantly: is change possible? If yes, how? This volume contains 21 essays on the themes mentioned above. Authors include Jan Peter Balkenende, Wouter Bos, Lans Bovenberg, Govert Buijs, and Herman Van Rompuy. A recommendation by Dutch Minister of Finance Wopke Hoekstra is also included.

Resumen
In 1994, a long-debated compromise on the issue of seabed mining became the starting pistol for the development of modern ocean law and its complex interrelations. Now, over twenty years later, the framework set by such agreements as the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) has been expanded to cover contemporary concerns of environmental sustainability, economic development, social justice, human rights, security, marine pollution, and even the challenges of climate change. Yet the journey is not smooth. This book forms part of a three-volume series that looks to examine the more successful ocean law schemes and the less effective, and presses the need for change, as scientific and technological innovation, the surge in human population, and pressing moral concerns open new spaces for ocean law. In the second volume in the series, autonomous organisations working under the auspices of the UN are the target, from the World Intellectual Property Organization to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime: are they ensuring sustainable development, are efforts adequately administrated, and how much co-ordination is there between different legal bodies?

Resumen
Spanning a period which stretches from the 19th century to the present day, this book takes a novel look at the British labour movement by examining the interaction between trade unions, the Labour Party, other parties of the Left, and other groups such as the Co-op movement and the wider working class, to highlight the dialectic nature of these relationships, marked by consensus and dissention. It shows that, although perceived as a source of weakness, those inner conflicts have also been a source of creative tension, at times generating significant breakthroughs. This book seeks to renew and expand the field of British labour studies, setting out new avenues for research so as to widen the audience and academic interest in the field, in a context which makes the revisiting of past struggles and dilemmas more pressing than ever. The book together brings well-established labour historians and political scientists, thus establishing dialogue across disciplines, and younger colleagues who are contributing to the renewal of the field. It provides a range of case studies as well as more wide-ranging assessments of recent trends in labour organising, and will therefore be of interest to academics and students of history and politics, as well as to practitioners, in the British Isles and beyond.

Resumen
Can we, who have been touched by the scientific, intellectual, and experimental revolutions of modern and contemporary times, still believe that we as individual persons are immortal? Indeed, is there even good cause to hope that we are? In examining the present relationship of reason to faith, can we find justifying reasons for faith? These are the central questions in this book, a compelling exercise in philosophical theology. Drawing upon the works of William James and the principles of American Pragmatism, the book extrapolates carefully from “data given in experience” to a model of the cosmic process open to the idea that individual identity may survive bodily dissolution. Presupposing that the possibility of personal immortality has been established in the first part, the second part of the book is concerned with desirability. Here, it is shown that, far from diverting attention and energies from the crucial tasks confronting us here and now, such belief can be energizing and life enhancing. The wider importance of the book lies in its pressing both immortality-believers and terminality-believers to explore both the metaphysical presuppositions and the lived consequences of their beliefs. It is the author's expressed hope that such explorations, rather than impeding, will stimulate co-operative efforts to create a richer and more humane community.

Resumen
The rapid shift online during the Covid-19 pandemic has put online learning firmly on the agenda of universities everywhere. To realise fully the transformative potential of online learning this book argues the need for an evidence-based design approach. The evidence comes from the experiences of online learners who are professionals: educators, engineers and researchers. Design-based research, survey responses and interviews with these learners will demonstrate that open, online, collaborative learning experiences are not only feasible but effective for building professional community knowledge. This kind of innovative online learning can help universities contribute to the global public good by achieving high quality learning at scale that will widen access to professional education and create more porous boundaries between universities and the wider community, for example in the context of the current policy discussions on the UN SDGs, such climate and inequality. The evidence shows how co-designed, transformative digital education can be mobilised to support, e.g., teachers in crisis contexts, professionals investigating renewable energy solutions, or medics adapting treatments to local conditions, and also scale up professional development in areas where expertise is urgently required. The book concludes that scaled up online learning can enable HE to deliver on the UN SDGs by equipping citizens and communities with the knowledge and skills needed to solve the world’s most pressing problems.

Resumen
AbstractThe construction of the sea fortress Sveaborg outside Helsinki started in 1748 and caused an enormous influx of military staff into town; the soldiers far outnumbered the civilian population. The locals’ hospitality towards the army was not voluntary; the law obliged all burghers to accommodate military staff in their own homes. The biggest risks when soldiers arrived in town were related to public health, public order, and the billeting of soldiers. In mid-eighteenth-century Helsinki public health was not yet a concern, but the large-scaled billeting was an acute problem. Public order was a pressing concern too, to avoid conflicts the social order had to be maintained, everyone should know their proper places and behave accordingly. Since the army arrived in peacetime to its own country, the army and the local authorities constantly negotiated about the terms of the hospitality to maintain a safe and peaceful co-existence. The townsmen remained masters of their own houses and their own town, but they still had to submit to the state, the social hierarchies, and the common good. But the billeting also provided new economic opportunities for the burghers in the tavern and alcohol business, as well as skilled workforce for bold entrepreneurs.

Resumen
AbstractThere is an increasing awareness of the role that buildings, districts, and neighborhoods play on health in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic that coincides with pressing climate concerns. This has renewed attention to the benefits of nature for both human and climate health. Buildings, cities, and regions are attempting to align regenerative design principles with human health goals but often lack the tools and knowledge to do so. This is partly rooted in a failure to understand how to apply research and policy for different contexts as well as at different scales. It is also still uncertain exactly what types of nature can lead to which types of benefit, and for whom, despite long-standing research within the environmental psychology, sustainability, and design fields. This chapter outlines key research paradigms that influence the way we understand the benefits of nature, where biophilic design theory sits in this field, and how it can be and has been applied at different scales through two case studies at the building and city scale. This chapter ends with the proposal of new directions for integrating biophilic design into regenerative design and policy.

Resumen
This chapter describes the work of the Land and Accountability Research Centre as an activist research centre at the University of Cape Town. It focuses on the co-creation of knowledge with rural community partners, suggesting that such co-creation transcends the concepts of ‘public sociology’ and ‘critical engagement’. It posits that current university criteria to measure research outputs fail to recognize the societal value of such forms of knowledge, focusing instead on specific individual outputs which discourage young researchers from investing in the rich but time-consuming process of building community partnerships that respond to community-identified research priorities. These entrenched criteria risk undermining innovative forms of research excellence that address pressing societal problems identified by the people directly affected.

Resumen
The robot rights scholarly debate has outpaced debates concerning pressing societal issues related to the repressive robotic enslavement of humans. Clearly, the robot rights debate can co-exist with critical political discussions in robophilosophy. However, in academia, we do not reside in an isolated philosophical bubble. Our voices are echoed in the society’s debates on AI and robots. Here, the public opinion and policy making is poorly informed and shaped by techno-optimistic and, often, false and overconfident predictions about the capabilities of AI and robots. Therefore, we should be cautious when insisting on continuously advancing the robot rights debate. Explorations of this exotic topic attracts media attention and intensifies common sci-fi myths and misperceptions tied to the public debate on AI and robots. Consequently, we should cease discussing whether robots ought to be included in the moral circle. We have more pressing, but less media catchy issues to discuss as robots increasingly enslave humans. Consequently, it is time to face the challenges of neo-tayloristic robot tyranny. It is time to replace the relational turn of the robot ethics debate with a Luddite turn.

The epilogue briefly traces the history of population thought and policy from the 1974 UN World Population Conference to the present. It contends that the real problem with population is that it remains a prominent scapegoat for nearly all of the world’s ills and demonstrates that debates about how to control the growth of the world’s population have largely silenced and co-opted voices that refuse to attribute such pressing problems as poverty and climate change to expanding human numbers. The framing of the world’s complex issues as “the population problem” diverts resources from just and equitable solutions at the expense of the world’s most vulnerable people and of the planet itself.

Resumen
Distress at school is one of the most pressing issues currently facing our school systems. There is, however, very little debate, discussion, research, or information on this matter, notwithstanding the fact that this distress can have a serious impact on the lives of the students affected, leading them to limit or to end their studies. This chapter aims to open up a debate on the social role that schools should play in order to combat the distress of students who live in areas remote from cities, who suffer a range of problems that can be both synchronous (student-student) or complementary (teacher-student). Here the difficulty manifested has been approached through cooperative learning, a methodology designed to activate a system of helping relationships, which result in the full involvement of each student in a number of key areas: collaborative structuring of the activity, assignment of roles, and co-constructive assessment.

Educating for a sustainable future and learning to live within our planetary limits is the most pressing challenge of our times. In this chapter, the authors present an emerging model of transcultural education that brings together Indigenous and western knowledges. This approach aims to engage learners from different cultures and knowledge traditions with the purpose of guiding them through ideas and processes of imagining, listening, speaking, and working together in a way that respects differences, acknowledges common ground, and seeks to co-create new knowledges. Bringing together Indigenous and Western knowledges in this manner creates a unique context that can potentially build the mindsets, skills, and dispositions that are needed for living and managing sustainably. A pedagogy grounded in this approach can potentially promote student interest and engagement across cultural and social divides, foster successful learning about bridging social inequalities, and cultivate an ethos of social, cultural, and environmental responsibility.

Resumen
Abstract. The production of composite materials using Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) technology is finding more and more applications. Composite parts for co-rotating twin screw extruders have been introduced in practice for years and are indispensable. Further applications in the roller sector for the processing of high-quality sheet metal and wood pellet production contribute to quality improvement and service life extension and can be tailored precisely to the demands. Composite material is particularly advantageous for large dimensions. Requirements such as high hardness in the rim zone and high strength in the load-bearing core can be combined with different materials. In the present work, HIP composite materials and HIP solid materials were compared with melting metallurgically produced solid materials. The differences in hardness and strength in the rim zone and in the core after heat treatment are presented, showing the advantages and disadvantages of both systems. The choice of composite material depends on the requirements and can cover contrary needs such as corrosion, wear resistance and high strength.

Resumen
Abstract Hot isostatic pressing has been shown to be an effective post treatment for thermal spray coatings, improving hardness, density, and microstructure as well as metallurgical bonding between splats. In this study, the sliding wear resistance of as-sprayed and post-treated WC-Co deposited by HVOF is evaluated by means of ball-on-disk testing and the effects of HIPing are assessed based on SEM and XRD analysis, hardness measurements, and fracture toughness tests. Changes observed in the WC-Co layers, including the precipitation of carbides and the elimination of secondary phase W2C, are also discussed. Paper includes a German-language abstract.

Resumen
It presents an innovative and interdisciplinary pedagogical practice involving a range of stakeholders: teachers and students from the fields of Architecture and Sociology, as well as neighbors facing gentrification challenges. The pedagogical objective of the project workshop is to adopt a transversal approach addressing society's demands, from the initial planning to the construction. Key actions in this process include active listening, negotiation, collaboration, project development, construction, and enjoyment. Fulfill a pressing need by co-designing artifacts that end-users will select for implementation within the neighborhood. This collaboration fosters mutual respect and understanding between future architects and sociologists in practice. This initial approach between the two groups of students is part of the foundation of the learning process. The main challenge lies in embracing the open nature of the project process and the multiple iterations extending its development until the final co-building stage.

In the realm of urban development, human-scaled community walking systems are continually devoured in large-scale urban renewals. Pressing issues such as fragmentation and segmentation of pedestrian paths, poor walkway quality, and outdated walking facilities demand resolution. On the personal and societal levels, walking, being the most fundamental mode of transportation, has unmet demands, with decreasing neighborly interactions exacerbating societal isolation and loneliness. The paper introduces the co-creation concept and related theories to dissect the components and human-centric developmental trends of the community walking system. It focuses on Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport Village's current walking system, employing participatory research, in-depth interviews, and co-creation workshops. This bottom-up approach encapsulates the residents' walking needs, exploring strategies to design a community walking system from a co-creation perspective. The paper proposes four strategies: the construction of human-centric physical infrastructure, the development of multifunctional spaces, fostering of inclusive social interactions, and promoting sustainable development through community involvement. These strategies are aimed at enhancing urban community livability and fostering human connections.

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The growing global adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) emphasizes the pressing need for a comprehensive understanding of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries. Prevention of the onset of thermal runaway and its subsequent propagation throughout the entire battery pack is one of the pressing challenges of lithium-ion batteries. In addition to generating excess heat, thermal runaway of batteries also releases hazardous flammable gases, posing risks of external combustion and fires. Most existing thermal runaway models in literature primarily focus on predicting heat release or the total amount of vent gas. In this study, we present a model capable of predicting both heat release and the transient composition of emitted gases, including CO, H2, CO2, and hydrocarbons, during thermal runaway events. We calibrated the model using experimental data obtained from an 18650 cell from the literature, ensuring the accuracy of reaction parameters. We employ this developed model to investigate how different state-of-charge (SOC) levels (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) impact thermal runaway events and subsequent gas composition. Our analysis of three major input parameters: pre-exponent multiplier, activation energy, and specific heat release, across the SOC levels, revealed similar reaction rates for SOC levels between 50% and 100%, except for the anode, with significant difference for 25% SOC parameters, resulting in lower cell temperatures during thermal runaway.</div></div>

Resumen
This study shows the results of mechanical properties (hardness, toughness, TRS), oxidation behavior against high temperature and wear resistance of composite materials based on a ceramic phase –Ti(C,N) or WC– and a metal binder (Fe15Ni10Cr). These hard metals were produced through a powder metallurgy process that included mechanical milling, uniaxial pressing, and sinter-HIP. Standardized cylindrical specimens were used for TRS tests, and oxidation tests were conducted on broken specimens in static air at temperatures up to 1000 ºC. Wear behavior was analyzed through reciprocal sliding tests using WC-Co balls as counter material with loads up to 30 N and test times up to 150 min. This study recorded the friction coefficient during and after the tests, the mass variation, the width, and depth of the wear tracks analyzed by an optical profilometer.

It’s important to research on the biotribology of UHMWPE composites for developing the new joint implanted materials and the life of the joint replacements. In this research, UHMWPE-NC composites were prepared using the pressing formation method. The nano-hardness and elastic modulus evaluations of all of UHMWPE-NC composites were obtained by nanoindentation tests (Hysitron, Co.,) with the corresponding load-displacement curves confirming the characteristic properties of these materials. A ball-on disc wear test was run on the Universal Micro-Tribometer (UMT) to investigate the friction and wear behaviors of Si3N4 ceramic cross-sliding against UHMWPE-NC composites in artificial body fluids lubrication.

Resumen
Strength and fracture toughness of ceramic tool materials can be enhanced by adding ductile phases. However, the hardness will be decreased, which is undesirable especially for cutting tool materials. Combining with functionally gradient materials (FGMs), the mechanical properties can be tailored so as to achieve high hardness at the outside of the ceramic materials leaving a relatively tough core inside. In this paper, a Si3N4/(W, Ti)C/Co graded composite ceramic tool material was fabricated by hot pressing technique. The composites without Co were used as the surface layers and the composites containing Co were used as the inner layers. Subsequently, the cutting performance of the graded ceramic cutting tool in turning iron-based high temperature alloy GH2132 was studied in comparison with common reference tool. The cutting forces, cutting temperature, tool wear modes and failure mechanisms were discussed. Results revealed that the resultant cutting forces firstly decrease and then increase with the increase of cutting speed, while the maximum cutting temperature increases gradually. Tool live of the FGM tool exceeds that of the corresponding common ceramic tool with the same composition systems. Formation of the residual compressive stress in the surface layer induced by the graded structure contributed to the longer tool life. The main failure modes of the FGM tool were adhesion, groove wear on the rake face and notch wear on the flank face. The graded tool shows better notch wear resistance than the common reference tool.

Schöner, Wolfgang, Jorrit van der Schot, Peter Schweitzer, Sophie Elixhauser y Anna Burdenski. Snow to Rain: From phase transition of precipitation to changing local livelihoods, emotions and affects in East Greenland. Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, octubre de 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1553/ess-snow2rain.

Resumen
Snow2Rain investigated the impacts and perception of climate change in East Greenland through a holistic approach that includes natural science methods of time series analysis and statistical climatology on the one hand, and social science approaches of social anthropology on the other. In addition, this interdisciplinary approach was based in a transdisciplinary framework by involving the local people in Tasiilaq (East Greenland) and their knowledge. Based on the intention to study the effects of climate close to the everyday life of the locals, snow was chosen as one such interdisciplinary indicator of climate change. In addition, Greenland, as the study site of Snow2Rain, is a region in the Arctic and thus affected by Arctic amplification (implying a temperature increase of about three times the global average). With this in mind, Snow2Rain examined changes in snow characteristics in East Greenland and their underlying mechanisms, and placed these changes in the context of social and cultural as well as socioeconomic impacts for local people. From the main results of Snow2Rain, it can be concluded that (i) Arctic amplification is less pronounced compared to other regions in the Arctic and therefore climate change impacts (e.g., changes in snowpack, transition from snowfall to rain) are less pronounced and co-determined by precipitation changes. The strongest signals for the transition from snow to rain were found for the summer season. In addition, the most important climate change events currently discussed by locals in Tasiilaq are the storm winds known as piteraqs and icequakes (earthquakes triggered by calving glaciers). There is considerable interest in scientific information about meteorological and climate conditions as well as changes in the community of Tasiilaq, even though the topic of climate change is not the most pressing issue within the community. It also became clear that local knowledge holders from Tasiilaq hold relevant knowledge about past snow and environmental conditions (e.g. stories about snow conditions along dogsledding routes), but several challenges exist that make it a complex task to make this knowledge usable for climate scientists. To give a few examples of the existing knowledge, there is a lot of relevant knowledge about changes in wind direction and wind speed, and particularly a lot of memories exist in relation to extreme wind events (piteraqs and other storm winds). Overall, the perception of climate change in Greenland is different than in Europe (the recent signing of the Paris Agreement seems to be a clear reflection of this). People from Tasiilaq region are very sensitive in observing changes of their environment including the climate. Snow is only one of those changes observed (wind/storms and earthquakes are currently widely discussed by the locals). However, they speculate much less about future changes and are cautious about the human influence on climate change.
