Resumen
Abstract. The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) was launched in 2009 to measure global atmospheric CO2 and CH4 concentrations. GOSAT is equipped with two sensors: the Thermal And Near infrared Sensor for carbon Observations (TANSO)-Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) and TANSO-Cloud and Aerosol Imager (CAI). The presence of clouds in the instantaneous field of view of the FTS leads to incorrect estimates of the concentrations. Thus, the FTS data suspected to have cloud contamination must be identified by a CAI cloud discrimination algorithm and rejected. Conversely, overestimating clouds reduces the amount of FTS data that can be used to estimate greenhouse gas concentrations. This is a serious problem in tropical rainforest regions, such as the Amazon, where the amount of useable FTS data is small because of cloud cover. Preparations are continuing for the launch of the GOSAT-2 in fiscal year 2018. To improve the accuracy of the estimates of greenhouse gases concentrations, we need to refine the existing CAI cloud discrimination algorithm: Cloud and Aerosol Unbiased Decision Intellectual Algorithm (CLAUDIA1). A new cloud discrimination algorithm using a support vector machine (CLAUDIA3) was developed and presented in another paper. Although the use of visual inspection of clouds as a standard for judging is not practical for screening a full satellite data set, it has the advantage of allowing for locally optimized thresholds, while CLAUDIA1 and -3 use common global thresholds. Thus, the accuracy of visual inspection is better than that of these algorithms in most regions, with the exception of snow- and ice-covered surfaces, where there is not enough spectral contrast to identify cloud. In other words, visual inspection results can be used as truth data for accuracy evaluation of CLAUDIA1 and -3. For this reason visual inspection can be used for the truth metric for the cloud discrimination verification exercise. In this study, we compared CLAUDIA1–CAI and CLAUDIA3–CAI for various land cover types, and evaluated the accuracy of CLAUDIA3–CAI by comparing both CLAUDIA1–CAI and CLAUDIA3–CAI with visual inspection (400 × 400 pixels) of the same CAI images in tropical rainforests. Comparative results between CLAUDIA1–CAI and CLAUDIA3–CAI for various land cover types indicated that CLAUDIA3–CAI had a tendency to identify bright surface and optically thin clouds. However, CLAUDIA3–CAI had a tendency to misjudge the edges of clouds compared with CLAUDIA1–CAI. The accuracy of CLAUDIA3–CAI was approximately 89.5 % in tropical rainforests, which is greater than that of CLAUDIA1–CAI (85.9 %) for the test cases presented here.

Resumen
Ca2+ is absorbed across intestinal epithelial monolayers via transcellular and paracellular pathways, and an active form of vitamin D3, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1α,25(OH)2D3], is known to promote intestinal Ca2+ absorption. However, the molecules driving the paracellular Ca2+ absorption and its vitamin D dependency remain obscure. Because the tight junction proteins claudins are suggested to form paracellular channels for selective ions between neighboring cells, we hypothesized that specific intestinal claudins might facilitate paracellular Ca2+ transport and that expression of these claudins could be induced by 1α,25(OH)2D3. Herein, we show, by using RNA interference and overexpression strategies, that claudin-2 and claudin-12 contribute to Ca2+ absorption in intestinal epithelial cells. We also provide evidence showing that expression of claudins-2 and -12 is up-regulated in enterocytes in vitro and in vivo by 1α,25(OH)2D3 through the vitamin D receptor. These findings strongly suggest that claudin-2- and/or claudin-12-based tight junctions form paracellular Ca2+ channels in intestinal epithelia, and they highlight a novel mechanism behind vitamin D-dependent calcium homeostasis.

Resumen
There is a moment in “I, Claudius” where Claudius, the king, looks back at all that had happened during his lifetime and before and decides that it is all rotten and has to be destroyed. And he makes a statement. He says: “Let all the poisons that lurk in the mud hatch out.”In a very real sense, Claudius’ curse sums up much of what has happened in Cuba during the last several years. All of the weaknesses and pathologies of the Castro regime, many of which had been hidden beneath its monolithic façade, have come to the surface. The revolution has soured. The situation has grown so bad that most political observers today assume that the regime is in its “final hour.” Cuba is “collapsing,” and the only real questions are when and how Fidel will go and what will replace him. While Castro must leave sooner or later, reports of his impending demise have been much exaggerated. A golpe de estado is possible, but not probable.

Resumen
The fish oil finishing (FOF) strategy, that is, re-feeding fish with fish oil (FO)-based diet after a certain period of feeding with alternative lipid source-based diets. On tiger puffer, the present study investigated the response of intestinal microbiota to FOF. Fish were fed four diets based on FO, soybean oil, palm oil and beef tallow as lipid sources, respectively, firstly for 50 days (growing-out period), and then fed the FO-based diet for 30 more days (FOF period). The results showed that dietary terrestrially sourced oils impaired the intestinal function in the growing-out period. However, the activities of amylase, trypsin and anti-oxidative enzymes (SOD, CAT, T-AOC), as well as gene expression of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α, TGF-β) and tight junction protein (Claudin4, Claudin7, Claudin18, JAM, ZO-1) in the intestine were significantly recovered by FOF. The 16S rDNA sequencing analysis showed that FOF improved the similarity of bacterial community among the groups. The MetaStat analysis confirmed that FOF regulated the abundance of butyric acid-producing bacteria (Lachnospiraceae, Eubacterium, Butyricicoccus, Clostridium and Roseburia) and bacteria related to digestion and absorption (Sphingomonas, Romboutsia and Brevibacillus). In conclusion, FOF can recover the intestine function. The intestinal microbiota probably participated in and played a key role in the recovery process.

Resumen
The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is confined to the endothelium of brain capillaries and is indispensable for fluid homeostasis and neuronal function. In this study, we show that endothelial Wnt/β-catenin (β-cat) signaling regulates induction and maintenance of BBB characteristics during embryonic and postnatal development. Endothelial specific stabilization of β-cat in vivo enhances barrier maturation, whereas inactivation of β-cat causes significant down-regulation of claudin3 (Cldn3), up-regulation of plamalemma vesicle-associated protein, and BBB breakdown. Stabilization of β-cat in primary brain endothelial cells (ECs) in vitro by N-terminal truncation or Wnt3a treatment increases Cldn3 expression, BBB-type tight junction formation, and a BBB characteristic gene signature. Loss of β-cat or inhibition of its signaling abrogates this effect. Furthermore, stabilization of β-cat also increased Cldn3 and barrier properties in nonbrain-derived ECs. These findings may open new therapeutic avenues to modulate endothelial barrier function and to limit the devastating effects of BBB breakdown.

Resumen
In the mid-thirteenth century, the noted English Benedictine chronicler Matthew Paris produced a substantial corpus of regional maps. Especially famous is Paris’s Map of Britain, particularly the version preserved in British Library Cotton Claudius d. vi, known for its mimetic accuracy, artistic presentation, and striking level of detail. Another of Paris’s maps, however, a map of the eastern Mediterranean preserved on Oxford Corpus Christi MS 2*, though little studied, shares many of the features which made the Map of Britain so remarkable. Internal evidence strongly suggests that the Oxford Map and the Claudius Map of Britain derive from a common project which depicted England and the Holy Land as mirror images – a project which would have had profound meaning in the contemporary political context, serving to express horror at Jerusalem’s fall in 1244, articulate support for a new English-led crusade, and comment critically on King Henry III’s performative piety. The subsequent abandonment of the project is equally informative since it demonstrates that medieval maps, far from being formulaic expressions of set religious doctrine, could express political opinions so intensely topical that they could become outdated before they were even complete.

Resumen
Dictionaries are reference works to be consulted. But they can also be assessed as texts and interpreted. For this approach, which is based on a close reading of the entire lexicographical work, the term ‘lexicature’ has been suggested. The chapter takes the French–English dictionary compiled by the French Bourbonnais Huguenot Claudius Hollyband as a striking example of this new type of study. A number of criteria are identified which reveal the persona of the author behind his work. It is shown how the persona influences the description of the lexicon: in the preferences for word selection, the personal expertise or bias in the description of the meanings of words, and in the choice of examples illustrating the use of words.

Resumen
This paper discusses the importance and frequency of Magris’ explorations of Musil and his major work as a novelist, Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften. It investigates the reasons why Musil’s novel is so important, and not only so for the Germanist. Indeed, Musil’s work and its interpretation can also be considered as a kind of ‘model’ for the writer that Magris would become later on in his career. The paper focuses on different features of Musil’s masterpiece, which better meet Magris’ ideal of diegesis, and somehow subvert the classic and rational paradigm of the Bildungsroman, pointing to the magic realism of a writer like Borges.

Resumen
Abstract Aim of this contribution is to demonstrate how digital methods, in combination with traditional sources, can effectively contribute to reconstruct a narrative of the past based on a sensory account of a few coastal landscapes in Northwestern Etruria as they were perceived and described by ancient authors. A few passages by Strabo (Geogr. 5.2.5, 222C, Augustan period) and Rutilius Namatianus (de reditu suo, early fifth-century CE) are examined, in order to understand how these authors perceived, either through previous sources or by autopsy, the river network and some coastal landscapes in Northwestern Etruria. The study of these passages is compared with the output of recent integrated research in the same districts described by the ancient authors. Areas of particular interest have been selected, for which landscape archaeology provides evidence of their long-term history, based on integrated palaeogeographic, historical and archaeological research including geomorphologic and palaeoenvironmental changes, exploitation of natural resources, urban forms, type and distribution of settlements. As for Strabo and Claudius Rutilius Namatianus, both authors relayed on their personal experience and on previous writers, but certainly chose to describe specific aspects characterising our case-study areas. In the frame of different literary genres, they provide descriptions based on their perceptions and also on their culture.

Resumen
This chapter summarizes the conclusions that emerge from the analysis conducted in previous chapters. While the reign of each emperor described in the Annals has its own unique religious character, Tacitus nevertheless highlights certain problems that afflict them all: emperor cult, and the way it encourages religious commemoration of living members of the Imperial family; the prosecution of rivals on religious charges; religious flattery; increasing disregard for the cultic traditions of Rome; and the gods’ anger as manifested in prodigies. Tacitus also shows that there is no convincing alternative approach available, since rivals to the emperors’ conduct (such as Germanicus or the Pisonian conspirators) are also plagued by religious problems, and Claudius’ attempt to revive cultic traditions does not make any real difference. A brief consideration of the Histories suggests that, while the Flavians come off better than the Julio-Claudians, Tacitus also does not seem to have considered them to be a real solution to Rome’s religious problems, either. The best Tacitus can offer is his own works, as a conduit that can preserve religious memory in their own right.

Abstract When we compare our picture of the country that Caesar found with the state of knowledge about Britain just before the Claudian invasion a century later, we must be struck by the fact that we can construct a reasonably complete map of the tribes for the later period, and people it with the names of a substantial number of rulers at whose relations with one another we can in some cases make guesses. However, the apparent clarity of our picture of the Britain that emerged in the period between the invasions must not cause us to forget that our knowledge rests on founations that may be radically modified or eroded by future advances in scholarship. It is partly based on the fact that when they were transformed into Roman civitates tribes often.

Molecular complexes grouped under the names of tight, adherent or gap junction regulate the flow of water, ions and macromolecules through epithelium paracellular spaces. The main constituents of tight junctions are claudins, a family of 26 different proteins whose expression and distribution are tissue specific but varies in tumors. A change in claudin 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 18 expression, that contributes to lose epithelial cohesion, has been associated to enhanced cell proliferation, migration, and invasiveness in gastric neoplastic tissue. Chronic inflammation process induced by H. pylori infection, a major risk factor for gastric cancer development, disrupts tight junctions via CagA gene, Cag pathogenicity island, and VacA, but the effect upon the epithelial barrier of H. pylori lipopolysaccharides or H. pylori-induced up-regulation of mTOR and ERK signaling pathways by microRNA-100 establishes new concepts of proof.

Resumen
Abstract While it is not really true that the Romans acquired their empire in a series of fits of absent-mindedness, much of it came as the incidental result of wars whose causes were very varied, or of the absorption of foreign peoples in other ways, including the bequest of kingdoms in the wills of their rulers or involvement in nominating princes to their thrones. It has been doubted whether Roman emperors can be said to have had ‘policies’ in the modern sense, due to the enormous burden of daily response to immediate problems that fell on them personally. Certainly, within particular reigns or periods, emperors and their advisers did sometimes attempt specific objectives. However, much more important than policy were the trends that consistently underlay Roman action, which were remarkably persistent through the centuries. Some we have already seen. Others need identifying before we can understand much of what Rome and individual Romans did or did not do.

The closing scene of Hamletentangles the play’s tragedy in a series of problems relating to intention, accident, and physical dexterity. Showing how many of the epistemological difficulties intrinsic to the play’s climax arise from legal and social issues around the status and purpose of the early modern duel, this chapter argues that Shakespeare used the occasion of swordplay to launch a daring formal experiment. Hamlet’s subjectivity disappears into the fencing-match, and it is uncertain whether he achieves his revenge against Claudius by accident, in spontaneous reaction, or with full intent. The sovereignty of Hamletthe artwork is thus connected inextricably to its realization on the stage. For it is only in a specific performance of Hamlet that the problem of Hamlet’s intention can be provisionally resolved.

Resumen
Abstract Claudius Ptolemy and Galen of Pergamum made contributions to scientific and medical thought and practice that remained foundational for over 1,000 years. Ptolemy and Galen regarded themselves as innovators and as educators who were philosophically astute, building on the work of their predecessors and synthesizing information for the benefit of others. Ptolemy wrote on a wide range of topics, including geography, harmonics, astronomy, astrology, optics, and scientific instruments. Galen stresses the importance of empirical information for physicians, especially emphasizing the crucial nature of anatomical knowledge. This chapter explores their work, which depended on using theoretical and practical knowledge. They emphasized that knowledge cannot always guarantee results, and can sometimes only aim at a result. For this reason, some practices, including medicine, astrology, and navigation, are called ‘stochastic’.

Resumen
This chapter starts by describing the nature of the evidence of the language and style of the fragmentary republican historians. It also refers to a number of usages which are absent, or virtually absent, from Cicero and Caesar: some of these are found in Latin – primarily, of course, in poetry – of a time before that of the historian concerned, while others occur for the first time in the author in question. The chapter specifically discusses archaisms and neologisms. It also reports the successors of Cato I. The verbatim fragments of L. Cassius Hemina, Q. Fabius Maximus Servilianus, L. Calpurnius Piso, C. Fannius and Cn. Gellius, L. Coelius Antipater, Sempronius Asellio, Q. Claudius Quadrigarius, Valerius Antias, L. Cornelius Sisenna, and C. Licinius Macer are then explored. Resumen
targeting rural NEETs. In my opinion, this is the most outstanding contribution of this manual, and also an original one, considering that to date no other efforts have been made with the intention of developing a grid of how to describe interventions dealing with rural NEETs. This manual offers, therefore, valuable contributions for upcoming research efforts within and beyond RNYN, including: (a) a complete methodological framework for future case stu-dies; (b) practical tools to conduct field research than can be combined with many different methodological approaches (qualitative, mixed-methods, etc.); and, (c) strategic criteria for conducting research in complex settings such as community-based programs. In addition, this manual sets the necessary conditions to present evidence-based conclusions about programs targeting rural NEETs, further aiding policy-makers to opt for solutions that clearly produce better results. This manual would not have been possible without the efforts and best knowledge from its editorial team. Therefore, as the Chair of RNYN, but also in a more personal note, I would like to thank Claudia Petrescu, Emre Erdogan and Paul Flynn for the impeccable and rigorous way in which they conducted all the process. I would also like to thank the Working Group 2 mem-bers traversing many countries who contributed to this document.
