Resumen
Since the start of mass production of plastic materials more than a century ago, the problem of accumulating plastic waste in the environment has reached epic proportions. Recently, the problem of smaller plastic particles (microplastic, MP) in the environment has become a widely studied topic, but the amount and types of MP in karst environments are still poorly known. Thus, the objective of this study was to collect and analyse samples from various karst habitats and to try and determine the scope of pollution in karst springs that are in part used as sources for drinking water. Of the potential pollution sources, we sampled rainwater, two discharges from wastewater treatment plants, and a leachate from a landfill. We conducted polymer analyses of potential MP particles using FTIR-ATR. The results showed that eight samples from the Postojna region (Postojna–Planina Cave System, rainfall sample and surface streams) contain up to 444 MP particles per m3. However, 32 samples taken from the Škocjan–Kačna–Jama 1 v Kanjaducah Cave System contain up to 60,000 MP particles per m3, with the bulk of particles found in the sediment samples from Škocjan Caves – Kačna Cave System. Samples from Postojna region contained mostly PET, PU and PA polymers, with a minor inclusion of polymers of plastic sponge used for cleaning. Samples from Škocjan region contained mostly PP, PET and PE polymers, with some of PA and PU polymers. Sediment samples contained much less MP particles compared to water samples, which indicates fast transport through karst aquifer.

Resumen
Abstract. The classical Karst transboundary aquifer is a limestone plateau of 750 km2 that extends from Brkini hills in Slovenia to Isonzo River in Italy. For 20 years, and especially in the last two years, the Mathematic and Geosciences Department of Trieste University has run a monitoring project in order to better understand the groundwater hydrodynamics and the relation between the fracture and conduit systems. A total of 14 water points, including caves, springs and piezometers are monitored and temperature, water level and EC data are recorded. Two sectors are highlighted: the southeastern sector mainly influenced by the sinking of the Reka River, and a northwestern sector connected to the influent character of the Isonzo River. Water table fluctuations are significant, with risings of > 100 m. During floods most of the circuits are under pressure, and only a comparative analysis of water levels, temperature and EC permits a precise evaluation of the water transit times in fractured and/or karstified volumes.

Resumen
Abstract Field mapping is an accurate but also time consuming method of detailed mapping of habitat types. Levels of habitat types are usually hierarchically nested at several levels. Our main research question therefore is: ‘How detailed can be modelling of habitat types with decision trees and digital data in karst landscape?’ Similar to studies in other (non-karst) environments we explored the basic properties of the habitats in Dinaric Karst study region (Classical Karst in Southwest Slovenia) and tested modelling of habitat types at three different levels of detail. To seek for the best set of predictor variables we used Rapid-Eye satellite images, airborne images and digital elevation model. We prepared more than 60 explanatory variables and divided habitat polygons into training and testing samples to validate the results. The results proved that modelling with decision trees in Dinaric Karst landscape does not result in high accuracy at high detailed levels. Due to the presence of mine fields in the large area of Dinaric Karst (e.g. in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina) the field mapping in this area is difficult therefore the findings from this study can be used for further development of mapping through remote sensing.

Parker, Megan. "A Paleoethnobotanical Perspective on Late Classic Maya Cave Ritual at the Site of Pacbitun, Belize". 2014. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/anthro_theses/80.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis presents the results of paleoethnobotanical investigations conducted at nine karst sites associated with the Maya site of Pacbitun in western Belize. The archaeobotanical remains were deposited during the Late Classic period and the site was abandoned at some point during this same time (c. A.D. 900). Paleoenvironmental data from the Maya Lowlands indicates that human activity contributed to regional climate change during the Late/Terminal Classic period. However, site-specific research has demonstrated a variety of responses to these social and ecological changes. The archaeobotanical data from this study is used as a proxy for understanding how people at Pacbitun ritually responded to macro-regional environmental stress. Ritual plant use at the cave sites does not conform to behavioral ecology models that predict biological, cost-fitness related responses to resource scarcity. Instead, the data supports a model of behavior based on culturally motivated ritual practices.

Resumen
Abstract Karst systems heterogeneity may become a nightmare for reservoir modelers in predicting presence, spatial distribution, impact on formation petrophysical characteristics, and particularly in dynamic behaviour prediction. Moreover, the very high resolution required to describe in detail the phenomena does not reconcile with the geo-cellular model resolution typically used for reservoir simulation. The scope of the work is to present an effective approach to predict karst presence and model it dynamically. Karst presence recognition started from the analysis of anomalous well behaviour and potential sources of precursors (logs, drilling evidence, etc.) to derive concepts for karst reservoir model. This first demanding step implies then characterizing each cell classified as karstified in terms of petrophysical parameters. In a two-phase flow, karst brings to fast travelling of water which leaves the matrix almost unswept. This feature was characterized through dedicated fine simulations, leading to an upscaling of relative permeability curves for a single porosity formulation. The workflow was applied to a carbonate giant field with a long production history under waterflood development. Firstly, a machine learning algorithm was trained to recognize karst features based on log response, seismic attributes, and well dynamic evidence, then a karst probability volume was generated and utilized to predict the karst presence in the field. Karst characterization just in terms of porosity and permeability is sufficient to model the reservoir when still in single phase, however it fails to reproduce observed water production. Karst provides a high permeability path for water transport: classical history match approaches, such as the introduction of permeability multipliers, proved to be ineffective in reproducing the water breakthrough timing and growth rate. In fact, the reservoir consists of two systems, matrix, and karst: however, the karst is less known and laboratory analysis shows relative permeability only for the matrix medium. The introduction of equivalent or pseudo-relative permeability curves, accounting for both the media, was crucial for correct modelling of the reservoir underlying dynamics, allowing a proper reproduction of water breakthrough timing and water cut (WCT) trends. The implementation of a dedicated pseudo relative permeability curve dedicated to karstified cells allowed to replicate early water arrival, thus bringing to a correct prediction of oil and water rates, also highlighting the presence of bypassed oil associated with water circuiting, particularly in presence of highly karstified cells.
