Resumen
Clark Coolidge (1939–) is often connected with language poetry and the New York School. The language of his poetry is opaque and disjunctive, like that of the artists associated with the first group, but it is also energetic, rambling and fast-paced. Curiously, in his most recent book, The Land of All Time (2020), Coolidge displays ecological preoccupations, the first poem in the collection, “Goodbye,” asking us to reflect upon how nature and culture are today nearly indistinguishable: “hark! an ocean as / generator see the wires? me neither oh well / there’s a heat vent somewhere in this wilderness.” In this article, we explore how Coolidge mobilizes his extreme wordiness for ecological purposes, arguing that Coolidge’s The Land of All Time proposes a model for harnessing restless affect for responding to climate change and ecological crises in a way that allows for the exploration of possibilities rather than falling prey to environmental despair. Coolidge is interested in experimenting with how to respond to extreme situations with vibrancy, speed, and flow, aligning the dynamism of language with that of nature.

La mayor parte de sus historias surgieronen fanzines o cómics autopublicados (Gazpacho, Way Opposite, I Laugh To See Myself So Beautiful In This Mirror).
The importance of atmospheric down-welling radiation in studying building thermal environments and energy performance has been well identified, and empirical formulae to evaluate atmospheric down-welling radiation values developed with their inadequacies. In this paper, a study of developing an alternative general method for evaluating atmospheric down-welling radiation values to the water pond-based empirical formula by Clark and Allen is reported. The validity of the alternative general method has been demonstrated by comparing the atmospheric down-welling radiation values evaluated using the alternative general method and that using the Clark and Allen’s formula. Since the alternative general method developed is based on a building roof system, and no water is involved, the alternative general method developed in this paper appears to have more advantages. On one hand, this could eliminate any potential impacts on prediction accuracy when water is used in different climates. On the other hand, the application of the alternative general method is relatively easier as only a suitable existing roof system is required. Therefore, the use of alternative general method can provide a more reliable and economic alternative in evaluating atmospheric down-welling radiation, when compared to using Clark and Allen’s empirical formula. Practical application The alternative general method developed for evaluating atmospheric down-welling radiation values in this paper could be used as an alternative to the empirical formula proposed by Clark and Allen and is valid for all climate conditions and easy to be implemented to evaluate alternative general method values. It can be used when evaluating building night sky cooling, building passive cooling system, etc.

Resumen
This paper investigates the quality of global cloud fraction and cloud-top height products provided by the third edition of the CM SAF cLoud, Albedo and surface RAdiation dataset from the AVHRR data (CLARA-A3) climate data record (CDR) produced by the EUMETSAT Climate Monitoring Satellite Application Facility (CM SAF). Compared with with CALIPSO–CALIOP cloud lidar data and six other cloud CDRs, including the predecessor CLARA-A2, CLARA-A3 has improved cloud detection, especially over ocean surfaces, and improved geographical variation and cloud detection efficiency. In addition, CLARA-A3 exhibits remarkable improvements in the accuracy of its global cloud-top height measurements. For example, in tropical regions, previous underestimations for high-level clouds are reduced by more than 2 km. By taking advantage of more realistic descriptions of global cloudiness, this study attempted to estimate trends in the observable fraction of low-level clouds, acknowledging their importance in producing a net climate cooling effect. The results were generally inconclusive in the tropics, mainly due to the interference of El Nino modes during the period under study. However, the analysis found small negative trends over oceanic surfaces outside the core tropical region. Further studies are needed to verify the significance of these results.

Resumen
Well-known cause of frequent failures of closed oxygen sensors is the appearance of gas bubbles in the electrolyte. The problem is traditionally associated with insufficient sealing of the sensor that is not always true. Study of a typical temperature regime of measurement system based on Clark sensor showed that spontaneous release of the gas phase is a natural effect caused by periodic warming of the sensor to a temperature of the test liquid. The warming of the sensor together with the incubation medium causes oversaturation of electrolyte by dissolved gases and the allocation of gas bubbles. The lower rate of sensor heating in comparison with the medium reduces but does not eliminate the manifestation of this effect. It is experimentally established, that with each cycle of heating of measuring system up to 37°C followed by cooling the volume of gas phase in the electrolyte (KCl; 60 g/L; 400 μL) increased by 0.6 μL approximately. Thus, during just several cycles it can dramatically degrade the characteristics of the sensor. A method was developed in which the oxygen sensor is heated in contact with the liquid, (depleted of dissolved gases), allowing complete exclusion of the above-mentioned effect.

Clark Coolidge is one of the most influential and prolific poets of postwar American poetry, but also, considering his importance, one of the least commented on. I turn to a prodigious amount of overlooked material, including essays, poems, talks, and letters, to present the bases of his poetics. Coolidge often discusses his writing in reference to a myriad of writers, musicians, artists, and thinkers, whose work I also analyze in relation to his work, in an attempt to give a fresh and widened perspective on his literary context. I develop some of his overarching questions in relation to specific poetic works, to show the varying forms and articulations of his central concern for the singular experience of writing. Poetry’s singularity, what he calls its “obduration,” designates its resolute irreducibility to any other form of experience and language. The writing involves taking one’s linguistic, artistic and cultural inheritance, and subjecting it to a radical questioning and to a profoundly transformative process of creation and destruction. This process results in the irreducible forms of poetry. While this notion accounts for poetry’s material sources, he also designates its distinctly poetic source or cause as that which instigates the movement of writing, in relation to an enigmatic and transformative experience of the unknown. I develop his lifelong, almost daily writing practice as a sustained meditation on the unknown, one that is neither austere nor primarily reflexive, but that consists in the exercise of writing’s endless desirous movement, what he calls, in reference to jazz music, the practice of improvisation

Resumen
Dictionary Poetics analyses book-length poems from a number of writers who have used particular editions of specific dictionaries to structure their work. Spanning most of the 20th century, this study investigates poems by Louis Zukofsky and George Oppen (two “Objectivist” writers of the late 1920s and early 1930s), Clark Coolidge and Tina Darragh (two “Language Poets” with books from the 1970s and 1980s, respectively), and Harryette Mullen (a post-Black-Arts writer who flourished in the 1990s). By reverse-engineering poems, this study sets the critical record straight on multiple counts. Moreover, reading these poems in tandem with their source texts puts paid to the notion that even the most abstract and fragmentary avant-garde poems are nonsensical, meaningless, or impenetrable. When read from the right perspective, passages that at first appear to be discontinuous, irrational, or hopelessly cryptic suddenly appear logically consistent, rationally structured, and thematically coherent. Indeed, beyond the particular arguments and local readings, Dictionary Poetics argues that the new ways of writing pioneered by the literary avant-garde invite new ways of reading commensurate with their modes of composition. Dictionary Poetics maps and articulates the material surfaces of poems, tracing the networks of signifiers that undergird the more familiar representational schemes with which conventional readings have been traditionally concerned. In the process, this book demonstrates that new ways of reading can yield significant interpretive payoffs, open otherwise unavailable critical insights into the formal and semantic structures of a composition and transform our understanding of literary texts at their most fundamental levels.

Resumen
Chapter 4 focuses on two books: The Cave, by Clark Coolidge and Bernadette Mayer (published in 2009), and Coolidge’s The Maintains (1974). Attending to the collaborations’ claims of negative ontology and the shifting nexus of particular terms reveals the intertext at the heart of the book: Carl Andre’s contemporaneous sculpture Equivalents I-VIII. Indeed, the chapter follows the implications of the collaboration’s proposals to make an argument for considering the book itself as sculpture. Following from that sculptural reading, and the book’s equation of caverns and dictionaries, the chapter turns to The Maintains, alongside its dictionary source text, in order to detail the way in which it excavates the dictionary with an understanding of the reference book’s physical, typographic and sculptural space.

Resumen
In recent years, mild or moderate hypothermia during which brain temperature is reduced to 30–35°C, has been proposed for clinical use as an adjunct for achieving protection from cerebral ischemia during cardiac bypass injury [Nussmeier 2002], carotid endarterectomy [Jamieson et al., 2003] and resection of extra-cranial aneurysm [Wagner and Zuccarello 2005], as well as stroke and traumatic brain injury [Marion et al., 1996; Marion 1997]. It has been shown that a reduction in brain temperature as small as 2°C substantially reduced ischemic cell damage [Clark et al., 1996], or improved significantly post-ischemic regional histopathology [Wass et al., 1995]. Most of the currently used clinical studies have examined only systemic hypothermia by whole body cooling. The major methodological drawback of this approach is slow cooling rate (∼0.5°/hour) due to the large volume of the human body and arteriovenous shunt vasoconstriction [Krieger et al., 2001; Marion et al., 1997; Schwab et al., 1998]. Whole body cooling does induce systemic complications. The systemic risks may outweigh the beneficial effects of neuro-hypothermia in the current clinical practice. Selective brain cooling which keeps the rest of body at normal temperature, on the other hand, can be used to maximize the neuroprotection of hypothermia.

Resumen
The heat transfer characteristics of industrial air-cooled heat exchangers (ACHEs) are dependent on the ability of the fan system to deliver sufficient cooling air. However, under normal operating conditions, variable flow direction and strength often subject peripheral fans to distorted inlet conditions with an attendant reduction in overall volumetric flow rate and cooling capacity. In this paper, a design methodology for single-rotor axial flow fans, appropriate for use in large industrial ACHE’s is presented. The primary motivation for this work was to address the issues of robust off-design performance, in particular, distorted inlet flow tolerance. Using this methodology, two 8-bladed prototype fans (B1 and B2) were designed, built and tested in accordance with BS 848 (Type A) standards. The two B-fans have a hub-tip ratio of xh = 0.4 and employ the Clark Y and NASA LS airfoil profiles respectively. Measured performance characteristics were compared to commercial fan designs (V-, DL- and L-fan) used in existing ACHEs. Results indicate that the B-fans have a higher design point operating efficiency. The B-fans also show a steeper fan static pressure rise characteristic compared to the commercial fans, except for the DL-fan, implying a greater tolerance to pressure fluctuations caused by distorted inflows.

Resumen
Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the country’s most rapidly growing cities. To accommodate this growth, a great deal of home building takes place in Clark County, where the city is located. Builders can sell virtually as many houses as they can construct. All of these houses require utility services that, in general, have to be developed. These, of course, include water, electrical power and natural gas. With the high cooling loads required in this environment, the summer demand peaks for electricity are particularly severe. This paper represents a case study of the effects of shading for a planned zero energy home for the Southern Nevada area. The main emphasis of the research is placed on the methods of energy conservation for residential construction type housing and considers the advantages of the use of two different types of horizontal shading for the given geographical location. The technique employed for the analysis is a computer simulation package Energy 10 version 1.6. The software allows modeling and simulating of building performance based on the inputs such as geographical location, building type, orientation, construction materials used, and others. The model selected for this study is a single-family one story, 1610 ft2 residential house with north facing facade.

The emphasis of this paper was placed on the energy conservation methods for a planned zero energy residential home for the Southern Nevada area, which would enable net zero electric energy consumption from the local utilities over a year period. Although also important, the cost outcome of the project was considered a secondary issue. The energy analysis was arranged in three principal parts: • Reduction of heating and cooling loads through implementation of sound envelope construction. • Use of highly energy efficient A/C, gas furnace, and lights. • Solar control and utilization. The computer simulation package Energy 10 version 1.6 is employed during the envelope, A/C, furnace and energy-efficient light analysis. The software allows modeling and simulating of a buildings performance based on inputs such as geographical location, building type, orientation, construction materials used and others. The model selected for this study is reflective of the local construction practices, is a single-family one story, 1,610 ft residential house with north facing fac¸ade and an attached two-car garage, which in this paper is called the “Base Case”. As a result of the energy analysis performed in this paper, the low-energy house (Modified Case) was created. The Modified Case has the identical orientation and floor plan. Implementation of the full spectrum of energy conserving features yielded a dramatic 105% saving on the annual electrical energy consumption by the Modified Case house when compared to the house built according to the local practices. In addition, the space heating and space cooling energy consumptions were reduced by 96% and 72% respectively. Details of the simulations and the final design details are given in the paper.

Resumen
Abstract After the Great East Japan earthquake, the countermeasures for beyond design basis events (BDBEs) have become more important. For a component, mitigation of a consequence of a failure in terms of impact on safety performance is required in addition to prevention of the failure. One of the key issues regarding BDBE is a structural failure of a piping system subjected to excessive earthquakes. The piping systems have various kinds of failure modes such as collapse, break, ratchet deformation and fatigue. Collapse and break can lead to significance degradation of core cooling performance. On the other hand, small deformation or fatigue clack have small impact on the cooling performance. However, the existing seismic fragility does not take into account the failure consequence and its dependency on failure modes. In this paper, we propose a new concept regarding performance-based seismic fragility for BDBEs by including failure consequence. In the concept, the core cooling performance is taken as the most important safety performance. The performance degradation is evaluated as failure consequence considering the dependency on the failure modes by the following approaches. As for collapse, the approach differs by the existence of a crack in the piping system. In case a crack is not included, the large deformation is estimated to occur in the piping. Based on the deformation, change in geometry of a flow channel of coolant is estimated. Considering the flow channel, change in a flow rate is estimated. Finally, the performance degradation by the flow rate change is evaluated. On the other hand, in case a crack is included, a break of the piping and a leak from the break point can occur. Based on the break size, a leak rate and change in flow rate is estimated. Finally, the performance degradation based on the flow rate change is evaluated. As for ratchet, deformation of the piping due to an earthquake is estimated. Based on the deformation, the performance degradation is evaluated by the same approach as the collapse of piping with no cracks. As for fatigue, the size of a through-wall crack initiated by an earthquake is estimated. Based on the crack size, the performance degradation is evaluated by the same approach as the collapse of piping with a crack.

Resumen
This paper describes the energy performance of a solar house over its first year of monitoring. The 2007 Solar Decathlon house currently sits on Santa Clara University’s campus at 60.4 m2. The house is powered entirely by solar PV and solar thermal off the grid. This solar energy house is heavily instrumented with more than 100 sensors to measure temperatures, humidity, power consumption of electric appliances, lighting, water, and performance of a 7.2 kW solar PV array and a sophisticated HVAC system. The instrumentation includes a full weather station. The house is divided into two interconnected modules, and constructed with high thermal insulation and sustainable materials. The instrumentation also allows quantifying energy performance of individual components as well as the overall energy performance of the house. The paper focuses on the complete energy balance of the house as a function of weather conditions, and of the performance of individual components. Of particular interest is the performance of the solar PV and solar thermal systems. The solar thermal system includes an absorption air conditioning unit, integrated with a thermal storage tank to provide all energy needs for water consumption and heating. The I-V curves of the full PV array are reported, demonstrating peak, off-peak, and seasonal performance and deviations from manufacturers’ conditions. Similarly, the overall COP of the solar-driven HVAC system is reported for both cooling and heating modes. Finally, it is shown how data can be used to demonstrate improvement of simulation tools for solar building energy performance. Although data has been collected since March 2009, this paper focuses on performance during summer 2009.
