Starting from the idea of city as an amplified field for communication and art, this theoretical-pratical research aims to investigate artistic experimentations that involve the handling of new technologies, mobile devices and locative medias, establishing a direct relation with Fortaleza city. Based on a route passed through observation, participation, construction of relations and experience exchanges, it was made an analysis from the work of three artists that operate in Ceara's capital: David da Paz, CecÃlia Andrade and Andrà Lopes. The approximation and diversity of these artistic proposals bring matters like assemblage of collaborative practises; dialogues between geo localized video performances and nomad poetics; erasures and dispute of urban imaginary; notions of public, private and virtual social medias on daily environments; neighbourhood, proximity and surroundings connected to the use of ordinary technologies; contributing to the construction of a thought that presents possible configuration dynamics of contemporary cybercities. Based upon notions of sitespecific and De Certeau's view about ways to invent and practise the daily life, critical outcomes are build from a social space connected by creative ways of being a part of a city tensioned by informative flow and intense political-economic-social transformation process.

Texto completoThe emergence of Information Technology (IT) is increasingly influencing the socio-economic and physical landscape of cities. It has also resulted in development of predominantly IT based industrial cities. These cities have the opportunities and challenges with respect to the development of their socioeconomic, infrastructural and environmental conditions because of the influence of the IT based industrial activities. This article therefore pertains to the analysis of the perspective impacts of IT industry and allied activities on the development of an emerging IT industrial activity based city. For this purpose, Pune, an emerging IT city in India was considered as a case study. Survey research methodology and a system dynamics modelling approach were employed to measure the influential socio-economic, infrastructural and environmental parameters of the city by considering the city as a system. This research shows that the location of IT industry and associated functions contribute significantly towards the socio-economic development of a city in terms of IT industry export, State Gross Domestic Product (SGDP), per capita SGDP, employment generation, to name some relevant aspects. However, there would be a reduction in satisfaction level of the infrastructure and an increase in environmental stress in the system, which needs strategic attention. Further, the model results and scenarios can facilitate evolving of feasible policy and strategic guidelines for the wholesome development of such cities.

Texto completoThe worldwide lack of consensus regarding what constitutes a Smart City leaves the concept vulnerable to being seized by a rhetoric of technological consumption, to which urban and social improvements might not be of concern. In a scenario where case studies and off-the-shelf solutions are widely used, a troubling fact arises: many of said cases and solutions where designed for North-American, European and Asian cities, which have social dynamics signifi cantly different from the ones seen in Brazilian and Latin-American cities. This research aims to contribute to systematic critical approaches seeking to comprehend Smart City discourse and it\'s practical developments in the context of Latin-American metropolises. By way of a panoramic view of the phenomena and the comparison of different academic and non-academic sources, an attempt is made to understand the evolution of Smart City discourse over the last twenty years. This discourse is them compared to the practices and phenomena typically present in Latin American metropolises, with São Paulo\'s Metropolitan Region as a reference. Several conceptual frailties and fantasies surrounding the Smart City and the general attribution of knowledge to cities - or any other technical object - are raised. The very validity of the term Smart City is put into question and the importance of qualifying the discussion on future urban scenarios is made evident. The plural and complex nature of the urban environment calls for a refl ection capable of producing new possibilities of discourse and design practices. The essential pillars for such a refl ection are proposed, as well as a few directives and remarks in an attempt to incorporate it into the design of urban spaces. Finally, new dimensions are proposed to guide analytical attempts towards recognizing the troublesome aspects outlined in this research.

Texto completoIncludes bibliographical references (p. 227-239).
Technology plays an important role in dealing with air pollution and other environmental problems faced by developing and developed societies. This research examines if technological solutions alone, such as end-of-pipe and process control technologies, can achieve substantial and sustained emissions reduction from the industrial sector in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA). Environmental standards for most of the criteria pollutants have frequently been violated in the MCMA. Severe air pollution in the MCMA, and the roles of point and area sources, particularly industrial sector, are the prime motivating factors for this research. Industrial sources of air pollution play a significant role in aggravating the air pollution problem in the MCMA. This research focuses on a 25-year horizon for socio-economic growth of the MCMA, and its implications on industrial energy demand, and pollutant emissions. I develop a simulation model to estimate industrial energy demand and emissions from the MCMA industrial sector. The model incorporates industrial growth rate, changes in the structure of industry and energy intensity, pollution control technologies, fuel-switching, technological progress, etc. I find that the level of industrial activity, driven by the macroeconomic environment, plays a significant role in shaping the long-term industrial air-pollution trajectory in the MCMA. I use two cost measures for evaluating cost-effectiveness of various strategies. First, the direct cost, which includes capital, operation & maintenance cost. Second, the policy cost includes direct cost and the cost of foregone production due to policy of deindustrialization.
(cont.) Performance of a strategy is highly dependent on which measure of cost is chosen for the decision-making process. The abatement strategies which look attractive when only capital cost of the control technologies and investment in renewal of the production stock is considered, are no longer preferred when the policy cost is used. When only direct cost is considered, deindustrialization dominates the list of cost- effective options. However, when total policy cost of options is considered, reducing the structure adjusted energy intensity (SAEI) emerges as most dominant option. Further, I use a sectoral abatement approach to look at.the cost-effectiveness and estimate the potential cost savings from market-based regulatory instruments in achieving emission reductions. I find that the savings from using flexible, market-based mechanisms are large enough to warrant a serious consideration in environmental policymaking to achieve air-pollution abatement goals. On basis of the scenario analysis, I conclude that technology options alone are not sufficient to meet the industrial air pollution abatement goals in the MCMA. However, an aggressive implementation of technology and policy options can result in achieving sustained and substantial emissions reduction. The structural shift from high energy intensity industries to low energy intensity industries, and deindustrialization, moving the industrial activity away from the MCMA, should form an integral part of the policy making process. The current institutional framework in the MCMA to manage the environment is not geared to integrate the technology and policy options.
(cont.) A paradigm shift -- from environmental policymaking for industrial sector to industrial-environmental policymaking -- is needed for attaining substantial and sustained emissions reduction, so that policy options such as deindustrialization and structural shift can be incorporated in the environmental policy making for the industrial sector.

This thesis project is a speculative proposal; it assumes that 3D printing technology is a major manufacturing and construction method in the future. The industrial revolution that has begun in the 19th century was the transition to a new manufacturing process. This transition included going from hand production to machine production and eventually changed the entire way of making things, buying things, moving things, and etc. The changes of our life led to the transformation of our cities. Current cities were formed based on the Industrial Supply Chain that enables flow of materials and products from supplier to customer. This supply chain decided locations of factories, retails, roads, ports, warehouses, and etc that have structured cities. In recent years, 3D printing has attracted increasing attention. The prospect of printing machines has inspired enthusiasts to proclaim that 3D printing will bring "the next industrial revolution", while others have reacted with skepticism and point to the technology's current limitations. However, 3D printing could proliferate rapidly over the coming decade. Improvements in speed and performance could enable unprecedented levels of mass customization, simplified supply chains, and even the "democratization" of manufacturing as consumers begin to print their own products. Although there has been a number of studies on the 3D Printing technology itself and its impact on economy, less attentions have been paid to its spatial impact or impact on our cities. As the industrial revolution transformed cities, 3D Printing is expected to change our current cities in many ways, as it will change the way of making, moving, buying things again. The fact that 3D Printing can be done near the point of consumption, implies several possible scenarios of future cities This thesis illustrates different degrees of influence of the technology in the city of Sana'a, Yemen. The city has four distinct areas currently: the historical world heritage site, a partially protected area, a modernized area, and an informal settlement. The four distinct areas will be changed in different ways by different uses of 3D printing technology. The tower house, which is one of the most significant building typologies of the city, is used to examine and compare the influences of the technology. More specifically, the ornament of the tower house and possible scenarios of transformation are the main design focus of the project. Ornament will appear in different scales and configurations in the future city of Sana'a, from high resolution ornament to inhabitable ornament.

The commercial and informal sectors contribute with significant amounts of emissions to the atmospheric pollution problem of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA). It is more the case for some pollutants than for others, but, in any case, policies tackling the emissions of these sectors have been very few, and of very limited effect. Even the measurement of the emissions is believed to be underestimated, especially for the informal sector, which is mostly unaccounted for in the recent emissions inventories developed in the MCMA. This thesis intends to improve the estimation of commercial and informal emissions in MCMA, through a qualitative assessment of the range of emission sources in these sectors, and an emissions model based on the integrated scenario analysis methodology implemented in the Mexico City Program at MIT. The ultimate goal of this research is to propose and evaluate new policies to reduce commercial emissions, both formal and informal, in MCMA.

Mobility is traditionally thought of as freedom to access more goods and services. However, in my view, mobility is also largely about personal freedom, i.e., the ability to exceed one's physical limitations, in essence, to become "more than human" in physical capabilities. This thesis explores novel designs for omni-directional motion in a mobility scooter, car and bus with the aim of increasing personal mobility and freedom. What links these designs is the use of split active caster wheel robot technology. In the first section, societal and technological impacts of omni-directional motion in the city are examined. The second section of the thesis presents built and rendered prototypes of these three designs. The third and final section, evaluates implementation issues including robotic controls and an algorithm necessary for real world omni-directional mobility.

Texto completoThis study aims to evaluate the technical and economic performance of dairy cattle, identify the main barriers in activity, indicating the possible causes by identifying the technological profile of milk producers. In order to achieve this goal, it was made with data collected through survey questionnaires to the producers of milk Quixeramobim, Cearà State. Based on the literature review, we divided the system of milk production to conduct the evaluation of the technological level of the producers, in three components: management of the activity, system infrastructure of production and herd management. We analyzed to plot the producersthe following factors: marketing, productivity, racial profiling of herds, expenses incurred and gross revenues from the activity. Next, we determined the technological indices for each component separately and for all of them, based on its recommended technology, creating the mean rates of technology and technology index for dairy cattle. The producers were stratified by means of cluster analysis, presented as the technological level and used to analyze the individual contribution of each and every indicator in the index constituents. The evaluation of cost was performed using the methodology of the Integrated Agricultural Costs - CUSTAGRI. We identified four levels of technology which were subsequently laminated and used for the analysis of technological, economic, cost estimates and assessment of profitability. The survey showed that the main deficiency of the producers is to adopt appropriate management practices. Access to credit, labor, unskilled and lack of public policies aimed at promoting the dairy industry also adversely affect the results. The dairy industry in the region proved to be a profitable activity, with levels of profitability appropriate to the region and capable of delivering sustainable development in rural areas.

Texto completoThis research report serves as an empirical investigation into the utilization of information technology to support information and knowledge management in law firms, as well as an attempt to design an information and knowledge management model for law firms. Members of the legal profession attached to law firms in the Polokwane City were investigated to find out how optimally they utilize information and communication technologies to support information and knowledge management in their daily operations. The research indicated that there are several ways in which information technology could be used to support the creation, organization, and transfer of information and knowledge in law firms, for the benefit of both lawyers and their clients . In order to provide for an empirical basis for this research, a survey research method, through the use of the questionnaires and interviews, was conducted, followed by a detailed content analysis of law firm websites. An in-depth literature review on the utilization of information technology to support information and knowledge management in law firms was also carried out to determine the findings of other studies that have been conducted elsewhere on the current topic. The results of this research showed that lawyers attached to law firms in the city of Polokwane appear to be non-users of information technology in as far as information and knowledge management is concerned. Most of the members of the law firms in the city seem to be utilizing information technology for basic purposes such as word processing, legal research, client billing, and communication through the e-mail. Other information and knowledge management tools, such as intranets, extranets and web portals, appear not to be utilized by most of the law firms in the city. Based on the findings of this research project, an information and knowledge network model, in a form of Wireless Local Area Network for the law firms in the Polokwane City, is proposed. This network could be utilized by law firms operating in the city to deposit, organize, retrieve, and share information and knowledge collaboratively through the use of information technology. Factors that should be taken into consideration in attempting to implement the proposed model are also discussed. At the end of the research report, some recommendations on encouraging lawyers to utilize information technology optimally are provided, together with recommendations for future research.

Among various police routine duty types, those that interfere human rights the most, such as spot check or alcohol breath test, is often easy to arise conflicts between law enforcement and civilians. Sometimes when the situation goes worse, violent attack or resistant by the potential suspects might be happened. With the principle of proportionality in mind, although carrying gun or baton as defense weapon during their duty, most of the time police officers in Taiwan would rather use martial arts and arresting skills instead of batons or guns. Therefore, the quality of police officers’ applied skills has great influence on the safety of process during law enforcement and arrestment. Nowadays police officers’ applied skills for arrestment include capture and grappling skills, Judo, Taekwondo and integrated arrestment skills. The researcher conducted a questionnaire to evaluate the current practice of applied skills for arrestment after undergoing whole year training, and having police officers of Taoyuan City as the research objects. Different factors such as genders, ages, ranks and seniority were considered and compared as well. The research found out that of all kinds of applied skills for arrestment, and of all research objects, when confronting potential suspects in real situations, it is the skills that related to the martial art, Judo, that had the most often been triggered instantly to carry out. Whilst there are no significant difference among genders, ages, ranks or seniority. To conclude, the research propose four suggestions: For the police units, it is the first priority to build up the professional evaluation of necessity to increase the effectiveness of the regular whole year training. Secondly, effectuating applied skills training thoroughly and increasing the training frequencies. For instructor, the primary task is to establish the curriculum files, for the purpose of understanding the effectiveness of training. Then participating in advanced programs actively, and exchanging experiences with peers, to improve teaching techniques. Keywords: police officer, whole year training, arrestment, Judo, Capture and Grappling, Taekwondo, integrated arrestment skills.

This research focuses on the Result of the Teachers in Learning Information Technology. The researcher had proceeded samplings to elementary school teachers of Kaohsiung City with self-organized questionnaires-- “The investigation questionnaire on the Result of the Teachers in Learning Information Technology”. 507 questionnaires out of 735 questionnaires were effectively reclaimed. Statistical analyses, such as item analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, t Test and one-way ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Analysis, Stepwise Multiple Regression, and Analysis of Moment Structure were applied to the data using SPSS15.0 and AMOS 7.0 software. The conclusions of this research include: 1. For lifestyle, it is dominated by cognitive tendency of "family-oriented tendency", except for a weak performance in "fashion tendencies". 2. The overall learning difficulty in information technology is medium to low, with a highest "self-capacity difficulty" sub-level and a low "family difficulty" sub-level. 3. The overall learning attitude in information technology is medium to high, with a highest "social awareness of learning" sub-level and a lowest "interest in learning" sub-level. 4. The overall learning intention in information technology shows a medium to high level, with a highest "computer orientation" sub-level and a lowest "communication orientation" sub-level. 5. The younger the age, the stronger the "fashion tendency" awareness in junior staff, whereas people in the position of a director have a higher "community involvement tendency", and people below the age of 30 years-old have a lower "family-oriented tendency" awareness than those over the age of 40 years old. 6. The elderly people, or people without college education or spend less than one hour on the Internet, have higher "self-capacity difficulty" awareness. 7. Male subject teachers and teachers who are also directors, below 30 years of age and spend more time on the computer or the Internet, have a stronger awareness in learning attitude in information technology. 8. Male subject teachers who on average spend more than 4 hours on the computer or the Internet daily, have a stronger awareness in learning intention in information technology. 9. Different levels of lifestyle show a significant difference in information technology learning attitude and intention; the higher the score in lifestyle, the stronger the awareness in information technology learning attitude and intention. 10. Different levels of information technology learning difficulty and learning attitude show a significant difference in learning intentions; the lower the score in information technology learning difficulty, the higher the learning intention in information technology, and the higher the score in information technology learning attitude, the higher the learning intention in information technology. 11. The is a significant negative correlation between self-capacity difficulty and interest in learning, self-confidence in learning, and the overall learning attitude in information technology; there is a significant negative correlation between family difficulty, overall learning problem in information technology, and self-confidence in learning; there is also a significant negative correlation between family difficulty and social awareness of learning. 12. There is a significant negative correlation between self-capacity difficulty, family difficulty, overall learning difficulty in information technology, and computer orientation, internet orientation, and overall learning intention in information technology, in which there is also a significant negative correlation between family difficulty and communication orientation. 13. There is a positive relationship and mutual influence between all levels in learning attitude in information technology and learning intention in information technology. 14. Primary school teacher's learning difficulty and learning attitude in information technology have a predictive power on learning intention. 15. The overall theoretical model constructed has a sound goodness of fit, while lifestyle, information technology learning attitude, and learning difficulty have an impact and high explanatory power on information technology learning intention. 16. After the interaction between lifestyle, information technology learning attitude, and learning difficulty, the greatest impact on all sub-levels of information technology learning intention was Internet orientation.
