Henstra, Simon. "Inner-city palimpsest: Building the city above the city". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13129.

Resumen
Includes bibliographical references.
This dissertation emerged from a fascination with the rich urban and architectural fabric of dense inner-cities, the layered palimpsest, and strong sense of character as a result of the piecemeal evolution of the city over time. Retaining this character is at odds with the phenomenon of a market-driven, developer-led method of place ‘un-making’ within the city which aims to maximise utility and scale, removes large portions of the existing urban fabric in the process, but adds much needed density to the city. The dissertation attempts to understand the paradox between the positive addition of density, and the nega- tive destruction of good urban fabric and character. While vacant erven within the city are scarce, the city’s density is far less than is planned due to many existing buildings having a lower bulk than is allowed. Simply put, there is a vast amount of airspace above the existing city which is being underutilised and underdeveloped. This dissertation explores a method of placemaking less dependent on the ground plane, and able to occupy the underutilised airspace above existing blocks and erven; densifying the city, and expanding its capacity, while maintaining the unique sense of character and rich urban fabric which is a product of generations of small steps in development. The dissertation attempts to cover, as a narrative, the process of unpacking ideas as pragmatic as zoning and as poetic as what it means to contribute to the rich architectural palimpsest, and everything in between.

Resumen
This dissertation is developed around questions of how cultural fascinations with seeing the city from above are intertwined with the birth and development of the city planning profession. To explore this question, I examine three contexts linked to already-familiar episodes from the history of city planning: Paris in the aftermath of Haussmann-ization, the visual approach of proto-planner Daniel H. Burnham, and the New York region in advance of the rise of master-planner Robert Moses. These settings serve as a basis for a reoriented approach to understanding how and why a new category of experts tasked with intervening in urban conditions emerged. Among other views, Paris is seen from the height of a tethered hot air balloon; San Francisco and Chicago from Twin Peaks and the roof of the Railway Exchange Building, respectively; and New York from the lens of a Fairchild aerial camera, as well as from the 86th story of the Empire State Building. The sublime experience facilitated by such vistas undergirds the discussion. It is employed to recast existing historical accounts of the birth of the city-planning profession at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries to more deeply reflect its interaction with the proliferation and subsequent breakdown of a visual culture of "the city" from above shared amongst experts and citizens alike.

Resumen
Cities present many opportunities to improve socio-ecological sustainability through efficiencies of scale and access to resources and services. These benefits are often compromised by rapidly increasing urban populations demanding energy, water, resources and food that are sourced, produced and transported from rural areas in unsustainable ways. A systems level approach to understanding the complex challenges cities face is required to strategically plan for the future. Rooftop agriculture is one measure that can help address many sustainability problems cities are currently faced with. Our research aims to identify the role rooftop agriculture can play in moving society towards sustainability, the challenges it currently faces that may prevent it from being widely implemented, and how to overcome these challenges. To structure our research, we used the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD), a scientifically rigorous and peer reviewed model designed to manage the complexity of planning and decision-making towards sustainability. The culmination of this paper was the creation of a Sustainable Rooftop Agriculture Guide, a practical resource that can help city stakeholders determine how to best use rooftop agriculture in their movement towards sustainability.

The thesis examines the potential of roof stacking to meet the expectations of urban densification policies, by studying three European cities : Paris, Geneva and Barcelona. Faced with the challenges of fighting against urban sprawl, thermal renovation of the building stock, social mix, easing of land pressure and enhancing the remarkable as the ordinary architectural heritage, roof stacking has been perceived since the early 2000’s as a proven solution on the building scale and now usable on a larger scale : that of the metropolis. Making a new city above the city would then be the solution to current urban ills. However, implementing a typology so strongly linked to the existing isn’t so simple and the results are sometimes even counter productive

Resumen
Stockholm was formed on an archipelago where water separates the inner-city districts, which gives the city its distinctive character. As a reaction to the increasing population the city underwent a considerable expansion in the beginning of the last century. At first the city extended around the islands of the city centre, for it later to extend into suburbs reaching far away from the city centre. Today the city is once again increasing in population, but unlike before its borders cannot be expanded. We face the problem of densification, of filling in the gaps in-between sparsely spread out suburban communities. A commonly used strategy is to mimic the form of the inner city in new developments, regardless of their actual position in the city. These developments often lack the urban life that was planned for, the reason being that there is not enough people for a culture of conges-tion. There cannot be only one answer to how the city should approach the question of densification since the conditions vary depending on the site. At each site both nature and the juxtaposition of the urban and suburban condition has to be considered.Right before the functionalist breakthrough, the plan-ners and architects faced a similar problem. There was a need to densify the city along its periphery and to make use of vacant sites that had been too difficult to exploit. Loose groups of blocks were built on ridges or in former valleys. With their location, coordinated execution and distribution of streets, the groups of blocks became domestic enclaves, linked to the adjacent city in key situations. The large perimeter blocks framed nature, providing generous courtyards in interplay with the streetscape, thus mediating the urban and suburban condition. When the inner city continued to expand, these enclaves became interwoven with the urban fabric, becoming cities within the city.Today former harbors, and industrial areas often make place for larger residential developments. One such site is Lövholmen, which is situated on the immediate limit of the inner city. Here, any architectural intervention would have to deal with the dialectics of urban and sub-urban, architecture and nature. The project aims to syn-thesise these factors, learning from the references and revisiting their urban strategies whilst making the build-ings suitable for the conditions of contemporary living. The project aims not only to bridge the gap between architecture and urbanism but to make a proposal of how the city can grow in continuity with its history.

Shrivastava, Priyanshu. "Exploring compact city : reconfiguring the compact city". CardinalScholar 1.0, 2009. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1540710.

Texto completo
Resumen
Intent and aim The primary intent of this thesis is to explore about Compact Urbanism and to define an approach towards low density, mono functional precincts in the city that lie underutilized in their potential towards a positive contribution to the city and to come with new model of compact city that will answer the challenges and problems that are still unanswered. The reconfigured Compact city will built environment at the best possible way to support the best quality of life. Everyone wants to be free of the urban pollution he can directly sense: the smog, smoke, grime, litter, odors, city heat, din, poor water, and the slum conditions. But the environmental degradation associated with urban development can also be measured in terms of disrupted ecosystems and wasteful use of green space and natural resources. The approach illustrates how and why compact city is the way of redesigning an urban environment so as to get rid of these negative aspects and to preserve enhance the qualities of urban life that we have come to accept desirable. Eventually to reconfigure the compact city which will work better than what has been proposed so far. The new model of compact city will make neighborhoods more lively, safe and relevant for children; and so that the city itself becomes a more exciting center for personal interactions in today’s fast-moving world. Main Concerns Concerns rise from the observations that there are city structures that are inefficient and are underutilized areas in the cities which have lower intensity of use and untapped potential to absorb new functions, activities and housing stocks. As of by-product of mono functional use and low density these areas have issues like lack of identity, character and lack of a vibrant public domain. A Renewal process is important for such city precincts that are located near city centers or work centers and occupy large areas at low densities in relation to its location and potential. The notion of the Compact City is a reaction against the city structures in most developed cities-dense cores accommodating most of the cities workplaces, retail, entertainment, commerce, services and amenities and sprawling low-density, single use suburbs-a city structure which by default produces the need to travel and as a product car dependency, energy consumption and pollution. The basis for the debate is the general agreement that the city as we know and inhabit today causes unsustainable environmental stress, is socially stratified & functionally sub-optimal, and is expensive to run.  Challenges The city is a platform where humans meet, interact, collaborate, exchange their views, make new relationship, work and compete with each other. City forms a shell in which all lives survive and develop. It moulds their lives. It is a web where different kind of people varies in religion, ethnicity and race lives together. It interlocks them and makes a mass of variety of living and nonliving objects. All cities are fast growing. People are moving in and out of the cities. Each day somebody is transferred to some other place. Families are breaking up either of transfers of job or splitting of parents. New constructions are planning. Whether the new construction is required or not people are building it up without giving a thought how it will be beneficial to the environment. Because of all these impacts of improper planning, land value in the city is hiking up and eventually people are left with no option but to move outskirts of the city. New tracts of land are occupying. Green places are disappearing. The challenge has to do with conservation. The fast growing encroachment towards the countryside of the city is destroying valuable green fields. They are affecting the farm lands which are essential for human life in order to get food for unstoppable population. There is a need of getting control over the growth of the city. There should be more functional and organized planning which can curtail sprawl. We have to comprehend the significance of land as it is not infinitive, it is limited. The city should be redesigned or proper measures and consideration are to be made in order to conserve land, water, energy and waste. If irregular spreading of city is not stopped and compact cities are not implemented than we will lose valuable lands and will not be able to acquire benefits of natural environment as it will be destructed. Compactness has to be achieved to build environment to support best quality of life.

Resumen
In january 2013, I travelled with my studio to Israel. This project is a collection of what I experienced on our journey through the country, and the thoughts it evoked. It is also a collection of symbols and metaphors found in the areas we visited.   Tel Aviv is widely known as the “White City”. According to the myth, it rose out of the dunes of sand as a new Hebrew city. However, deeper investigation reveals that a part of the municipality is established on the post-Nakba ruins of the former village Manshiya. This village was almost totally erased, partly for political reasons.   The project is an exploration into the story of erasure, and an attempt to evoke the traces of what once was there.  I have proposed an underground structure hidden in sand. The objective is not to present a final answer, but to contribute to an ongoing discussion of who is the winner or loser in the writing of history, and what role architecture has in this battle.

Resumen
Based on the upcoming 2010 World Expo of Shanghai. According to 'moving out' policy of Shanghai government, a large percentage of residents from Shanghai's old downtown area are being moved out to a district on the outskirts of the municipality. In the context of moving out policy and shifting community space of 'Longtang' residents, my research explores how water can be used to forge a new typology for the Xinji residential area in developing Shanghai. The new typology of residential area is defined by a new type of community space. Water, edge and corridor are examined as three main concepts to create this kind of new community space, where residents can be provided with diverse spatial experience and various spatial effects through spatial transformations in and between private and public and diverse programs in a residential area. 'Longtang' is one of the key precedents I am looking at for the purpose of studying water edge conditions and corridor conditions, and to deduce a way to best design hybrid community in the Xinji residential area, which is selected as my research site. It is identified as one of the peripheral node for the moving out policy by Shanghai government? My research, therefore, tries to explore a new typology of Xinji residential area, which can provide both existing residents and 'Longtang' residents with diverse water based community space in the residential area and its context.

Resumen
King City is a new citycenter in the expanding Kungens Kurva area in the southern part of Stockholm that combines shopping, service, dwellings and workplaces into a coherent urban environment. The project deals with the expanding city of Stockholm, where areas that before where seen as external, now form the basis of a polycentric city where the divide between innercity and suburbia is disolving. The Kungens Kurva area is today the result of “laissez-faire” planing principles that have allowed big retail companies to establish themself in the area. Since the ninities when the neoliberal ideology prevailed as the new guiding principle for Swedens economy, Kungens Kurva, as well as the retailmarket, has been expanding in a accelerating paste. King City is a architectural answer that anticipates our future city, driven by corporate power and diminishing public planning.

Tensile City is a story that provides the answer to the following question: II If we were to leap forward in time and visit a city of the future, what would learn about our contemporary city ? II The story unfolds when M.C., the main character, plans to undertake such a trek. The main reason for the trip is his thirst for knowledge, characterized by a dichotomy between logic and lust for adventure. He is inspired by a vision he had about a trip into outer space, where there existed a wondrous city -the ultimate example. Although the city in space represents a level that might never be reached on Earth, there was nevertheless something to be learnt: We have the means that will enable us to transform the urban environment in such a way that its physical framework allows it to function like a true three dimensional space. Just think of it! A city that practically has no limits in the ways it can grow. But still, there has to be a logical reason for it to exist ... At this point the other character of the story appears. His name is T.C. and he lives in Tensile City. He will provide M.C. with the proof that Tensile City is a worthwhile experiment and not just the result of M.C.'s lust for adventure. Therefore, T.C. will often be challenged to prove the validity of Tensile City. M.C. actually spends time in this city. He learns, among other things, that he is in no way qualified to be pan of it. In fact he tasted a vision of the future that was not a vision anymore, but reality: and that was scary ... In a letter to T.C., he agrees that Tensile City is indeed superior and-by all means - a logical solution to the issues that it addresses. Yet in his opinion, people -or cities- were not meant to live in this rigid way: the mental and the physical requirements are phenomenal. He set out to live a fantasy, instead he read an omen. In it he read a message that warned against creating an alarming imbalance in the ecosystem of life. Which in the long run, would require cities such as Tensile City. But is humanity prepared for it?

Resumen
Thesis: S.M. in Architecture Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2017.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. "June 2017."
Gilded City appropriates seven copperplate etchings produced by Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin between 1982 and 1990 in the pursuit of their preservation through reinterpretation and recontextualisation. Gilded City reacts to the political events in the United States of the past six months. Gilded City explores the potential of architectural animation as a tool for both design and representation as well as a powerful tool for (anti) propaganda while making use of traditional cel animation, 2D Vector based animation, 3D computer animation as well as motion graphics. In 1978, disenchanted with the bleak prospect of the faceless, unadorned, utilitarian architectural doctrine of the Brezhnev and Khrushchev years, Brodsky and Utkin began to produce fantastical landscapes and structures in exquisite and detailed drawings. Imaginative, light-hearted, subversive, their body of work freely referenced historical precedents ranging from Greek Mythology to 18th Century architects. Brodsky and Utkin utilized paper architecture to subvert the requirements of soviet ideology by inventing a form antithetical to existing power structures. In a similar act of subversion, Gilded City reinterprets this paper architecture in the form of architectural animation, a form that often seems to lack a critical dimension seeking to actively comment on current state of affairs in the North American context. It develops five distinct archetypes each constituting one chapter of the "Gilded City": Tower, Golf Course, Wall, Casino, and Prison. This thesis stakes a claim for the timely relevance of Utkin and Brodsky's body of work to contemporary architectural and socio-political discourse while also arguing for the legitimacy of animation in architectural design. Furthermore, Gilded City also speculates that architectural animation will soon occupy a more significant role both in architectural practice as well as in architectural pedagogy.

Resumen
A smart city is defined as a city that engages its citizens and connects its infrastructure electronically. The smart city concept has been introduced to solve a number of problems that arise in the management of any big city, especially megalopolises. Special attention is paid to the development of business and city through the construction of a favorable business infrastructure. The smart-city researchers have identified six characteristics that are essential to explain the concept. Economy. It includes dynamic business processes, labor market flexibility, etc. Smart people. Human capital recognizes the rights of all communities who are open minded and cosmopolitan. Intelligent control. Intelligent government put objectives of a strategic nature, involves rational decision-making processes, creating strategic plans. Smart safe transport and information infrastructure. This allows cities and districts within it, to be accessible for the outside individuals. Environment. It involves wise use of natural resources and the orientation on sustainable development, as well as reducing environmental pollution. Intelligent life in the city. Intelligent life in the city means the presence of cultural, health, educational facilities centers, etc. Each characteristic determines an economic function. It significantly affects individuals and businesses as far as life quality improvement, and increases economic opportunities.

This project is speculation in search of possibilities and rethinking the potential of Gamla Stan. Society is continually changing, as are the cities that we live in. The old town is mainly a residential area, but also a “living, pedestrian-friendly museum”. This is a place out of time and frozen in its form, a certain sensitivity is required when thinking about such a fragile context. However, the urban structure is not a fixed entity, but a dynamic and evolving one. By gentle carving in the existing city fabric, the aim is to re-introduce a workshop space in a contemporary manner. The idea is tested on the block of Cassiopea, where its building components get interconnected to make a continuous interior. The new space is about forgetting about the hyper-productivity mindset, with an intention to promote aesthetic pleasure and a slow pace of life. This collective and multifunctional space is a representation of artistic expression, a city atelier for making craft using technology. A space for artists, makers, and education, visible to the public.

My project is about the growing problem of relations between humans and wildlife in cities. The more we built, the less space of habitat for wildlife to survive. I choose to work in Beijing, a megacity with a population of tens of millions, also home to many wildlife. I investigated the issue about coexistence of humans and wild animals in Beijing. I choose to design something for birds. Birds, along humans, are the most powerful biological force of globalization on the planet. I mainly studied one type of birds in Beijing called Beijing Swift. The purpose is to create a new mode in which people and birds could coexist in the city by exploring the concept of territory for birds. I use activeness and passiveness to define the concept of territory in terms of time, vertical space and horizontal space. Humans have dominance in the city where animals may be disturbed by people's behavior at any time or  any place. Therefore I want to improve birds’ active dominance in their territory by providing bird-specific architecture, restricting human’s behavior and hiding human’s behavior in birds’ habitat.

Resumen
This thesis grew from a curiosity to understand monumentality, form, and design in a project that is rooted in constructional development. The program is a city hall in Rockville, Maryland, in the spirit of a basilica. A city hall should act as a room for the city. This is a place for public matters to be debated, people to meet others, events to be celebrated, and ideas to be discussed.

Resumen
As transportation systems, telecommunications, and methods of working and living evolve, it becomes clear that a centralized urban area is no longer necessary; a web of interconnected centers is the more likely result. This dissolution of urban density is occuring at a variety of scales, from the largest metro areas to smaller towns. Major "edge cities" have tended to develop at crossroads where radiating urban avenues intersect with concentric beltways. In our towns, smaller-scale edge cities occur at expressway exits outside the town limits, or where the business route into town separates from the bypass around it. "City/edge" is an architectural reconsideration of the edge city.

Resumen
This research aims to make the first step in the direction of creating guidelines to use for building an instrument capable to collect information about citizens’ emotional reaction toward their city.Through the use of an existing mobile application meant to collect data about one’s own emotions I tried to evaluated the availability of people in sharing how they feel.Later on, based on the evaluations of this app, I created two subsequent analog prototypes that can be placed in urban spaces to collect people’s place related emotions. The devices have been used both inside the university and in open urban spaces in Malmö. Using the experiences made with these prototypes, concerning the availability of people in sharing their emotions about spaces, this thesis is used to develop guidelines and design opportunities for further development of interactive street furniture designed to collect place related emotions.

Resumen
The project deals with a new building for temporary accommodation with a cafe. The building is designed as a detached house, the estate is situated in the southern part of the town of Břeclav and is almost flat. The hostel has an L shaped house plan with a stiffening reinforced concrete tube passing through all three floors. A glazed facade is intended to be placed on the part of the tube that is found before perimeter walls, which creates a dominant feature of the entire building. The roofing of the building is ensured by a single skin flat and glass sloping roof, which completes the whole building architecturally.

Keim, Laurence Virgil. "The City of Flow and the City of Borders: The Representation of City in Fiction". Thesis, Griffith University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366982.

Texto completo
Resumen
Cities are synonymous with Western Civilization. Likewise their representation is complex and at times elusive. This exegesis establishes a theoretical framework that acknowledges this complexity but at the same time can be operationalized at the street level. Also, while the framework itself is multidisciplinary and extensive, its analysis can activate fiction, particularly the accompanying novel, Psychoclip. The enquiry of the exegesis is initiated by the following key questions: • What are the relations between power and perception? • What constitutes a Theory of Flow? • What evidence is there, in literature, of the representation of a City of Flow? The discussion extends to focus on the following works: Seven Poor Men of Sydney (Christina Stead), Snowdome (Bernard Cohen), The Unusual Life of Tristan Smith (Peter Carey), The Bonfire of the Vanities (Tom Wolfe), Cosmopolis (Don DeLillo), Mr Phillips (John Lanchester) and The Arcades Project (Walter Benjamin). Theorists considered in the discussion include: Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, Michel de Certeau, Deleuze and Guattari, Jean Baudrillard, Gaston Bachelard, David Sibley and Rebecca Solnit. In paralleling the dissertation, the novel, Psychoclip, explores the relation between power and perception represented as a form of personal agency operating within urban environments. The novel’s fictional exploration could be summarized as: What are the side-effects of the ‘totalizing eye’ and to what degree are memorial and imaginative strategies able to release a City of Borders back into a City of Flow? The fundamental characteristic of a City of Flow is freedom of movement. Writing that represents this principle is mapped at both a perceptual and strategic level. The City of Flow is then reconstituted as a written city where the emphasis is perceptual renewal that creates endless means, and that dissolves the erection of borders that reside within ends. It is a city of movement where multiple new cities are mapped over the old. In contrast, but as a complementary feature to the one structure, a City of Borders is theoretically established and mapped over the City of Flow. This allows a significant reading of urban environments. Beside a critique of Sibley’s urban geography, the thesis provides the conditions for the coding of urban spaces with its constraints and prohibitions and how as a result of such exclusionary practices the less powerful are relegated to the less desirable parts of our cities. The psychological and political dimensions of boundary erection will be critiqued to show how a politically-motivated and self-interested strategy is eventually represented, over time, as natural and inevitable. Further border erection will be examined in the three ontological spaces – memory, experience and imagination. In parallel, the novel Psychoclip (with its central character, Lee Skulks, a criminal whose view of the world has been commandeered by the government) moves in fictional terms through authoritarian space and involves the reader in a number of excursions and imaginative strategies where urban boundaries are pierced, permeated or evaded. As a result the space is reinvigorated and revitalized, causing a new fluidity and rich ambiguity to extend through the lives of the characters.

Resumen
Elasti-city is an urban model generated with the purpose of satisfying current and future needs. Potentiating the dynamic properties of urban environments can transform them into adaptable ones. Understanding the city as an ever-changing environment allows architects and urban designers to read in urban complexity other than its current problematic. Buildings, and by extension cities, that are adaptable can provide solutions to multiple issues, generate vibrant urban life and permit people to mold and transform their surrounding environment.

Fixos e fluxos.
Fixed and flows. The big city is a huge fixed, crossed by huge flows. What happens when the order of these fixed and flows is subverted? What is the spatiality of a city in which the occupations of its territory, as well as its circulation, are not established by the logics of functionality and imperatives of movement of value? On June, 2013, around 388 Brazilian cities were the theater of riots in which the main focus were the public transportations tariff raise. However, the claims have overcome the revocation of such raises. The claims were also for rights to the city, free circulation and access to whatever the city may offer. Movimento Passe Livre – MPL, the main perpetrator of the riots, which were also called Jornadas de Junho puts the urban question of mobility and also the space competition at the Country s political agenda. MPL approaches the city, its occupation and circulation. An inclusive circulation, that allows the unveiling, usage and appropriation of the city. An urban idealized view, subverting the logics of occupation in such an utopia that does not belong to urbanism or architecture. The main objective of this work is to interpose different city concepts aiming to define the city envisaged by MPL.

Cen, Yan. "City size distribution, city growth and urbanisation in China". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6307/.

Resumen
This thesis explores three topics within the broad area of urban growth and environment in China, city size distribution, city growth pattern and the environment impacts of city growth. The research is firstly motivated by two key stylized facts- the well-known Zipf's law for cities (which states that the number of cities of size greater than S is proportional to 1/S, i.e. the rank of a city is inversely correlated with its size) and Gibrat's law for cities (which states that city growth rate is independent of its size). Thus Chapter 3 and 4 examine the evolution of city size distribution by testing for Zipf’s law and Gibrat’s law in China from 1879 to 2009 (number of cities varies over time). Chapter 5 thereafter investigates the growth pattern of Chinese cities by testing for the sequential city growth (Cuberes, 2009). Given the concern of the environment impacts of city growth, Chapter 6 examines the impact of city size on local air quality using 30 major cities in China from 2003 to 2012.

Sixteen years after the promulgation of the reforms to Article 27 that regulates land tenure in Mexico, there is consensus among political authorities, public officials, private investors, and scholars that the outcomes have been completely different than were predicted. In spite of the important changes produced in the legal status, internal organization, and governmental interactions of the agrarian communities, these changes have not translated into a massive privatization of ejido lands, and the incorporation of social land into urban development is far below what was expected. Furthermore, new forms of illegal social land sales emerged as a response to the privatization initiative. In addition to the economic and legal arguments typically used to explain this phenomenon, this research identifies three key factors that also have a strong influence in the ejidos' behavior towards land privatization: the hindering effect of community participation on privatization; the permanence of a clientelistic relationship between ejidos and government; and agrarian communities' cultural attachment to land. These factors reflect the economic, political, and cultural dimensions of the ejidos, something that the ideologues did not take into account when they defined the mechanisms for land liberalization. Key words: urban expansion, Mexico City, ejidos, Article 27, informal market, regularization, clientelism.

Papadopoulou, Anna. "Her City : spatializing gender relations in a Cypriot city". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/111256/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The thesis aims to investigate women’s everyday experiences of navigating the relationships between home and work in order to understand spatial and perceptual boundaries and opportunities that are inherent, constructed and implied within the city’s urban form. Boundaries refer to restrictions imposed on women by social structures through constructed space, and opportunities refer to ways in which the built environment either does or could improve women’s urban experience. These issues are explored through study of urban development and form, and evolving cultural and gender relations in the Cypriot city of Limassol, a coastal city of approximately three hundred thousand that grew substantially towards the end of the twentieth century. The research considers women’s entry into the workforce over the past fifty years as a pivotal moment of transition and seeks to unpack its significance for the relationship between women and the city today. Investigations delved into women’s understanding of the relative efficiency of urban space, women’s awareness of how gender relations are affected by the built environment and women’s willingness to embrace spatial and social alternatives. Thus, women’s experiences become a lens through which to read and understand the urban landscape, as well as an opportunity to consider how the production and consumption of space might further conditions for greater equality and inclusion. Interdisciplinary methods applied involve grounded theory analysis and mappings of qualitative data extracted from interviews, and visualizations of onsite observations. Ultimately, the research uncovers a complex relationship between women and various iterations of privacy within constructed space, and explores its implications in perpetuating women’s uneven urban experiences. Since fostering gender equality is a fundamental aspect of good urbanism, the research aims to contribute to the discourses of spatial democracy and social sustainability, in which the need for socio-political considerations to play more decisive roles in urban development processes is emphasized.

Kozak, Laura. "Open source city : a proposal for a city tool shop". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43238.

Texto completo
Resumen
Despite a history of participatory planning, urban activism and DIY building culture in Vancouver, Canada, current approaches to city-making have limited the agency of individuals in engaging with the built environment. This work investigates the changing conditions that have made it difficult for ordinary citizens to participate in small-scale construction, building repair, and navigation of permitting and rezoning processes. It addresses these barriers with a proposal for a facility that will support the work of DIY enthusiasts; individuals engaged in renovations or repairs; and neighbourhood activists and advocates. The proposal is presented in the form of a business plan for a City Tool Shop, a socially-enterprising non profit business located in Vancouver, Canada.
