Resumen
The flow over sharp-edged wings is almost always separated. The control of separated flows is possible and benefits can be achieved but only in a time average sense. A new design of an actuator was designed and tested which can achieve a wide range velocity of without frequency dependence, is free of oscillating components as well as free of secondary frequencies and therefore can be scaled up easily, unlike a traditional synthetic jet. The actuator can achieve a considerable amount of jet vectoring, thus aligning the disturbance with the leading edge shear layer. Results indicate that unsteady mini-jet actuation is an effective actuation device capable of increasing the lift in the stall region of the airfoil. Moreover, pressure measurements showed that two parameters could be altered to maximize the lift. The momentum coefficient needed a minimum value to exert influence and the actuating frequency need not be at exact the natural shedding frequency to improve the lift and can be operated at harmonics of the natural shedding frequency and obtain improvements.

Resumen
An experimental study of active control of fully separated flow over a symmetrical circular-arc airfoil at high angles of attack was performed. The experiments were carried out in a low-speed, open circuit wind tunnel. Angles of attack from 10 to 40 degrees were tested. Low-power input, unsteady excitation was applied to the leading or trailing edge shear layers. The actuation was provided by the periodic oscillation of a 4-percent-chord flap placed on the suction side of the airfoil and facing the sharp edge. Vortex-shedding frequencies were measured and harmonic combinations selected as the applied actuator frequencies. Pressure measurements over the airfoil show that the control increased the normal force coefficient by up to 70%. This supports the idea of vortex capture in the time-averaged sense, enhancing the lift on the airfoil by managing the shear layer roll up. The results indicate the viability of the control of large-scale flow fields by exploiting the natural amplification of disturbances triggered by small-scale actuators. The application of flow control on sharp-edged aircraft wings could lead to improved maneuverability, innovative flight control and weight reduction. These can be achieved by inexpensive, low-power, rugged actuators.

Resumen
The structural design engineer normally considers the soil element that supports foundation of a building behaves as a undeformable solid remains unchanged after application of the load over time. The practice in the design of foundations but indicates that the soil when subjected to loading of a building, it deforms and causes a disturbance in the structure. This phenomenon is called soil-structure interaction and had their computed for metal shed arch truss metallic circular effects. Changes in stresses and strains in the joints of the metal structure and displacements recorded on their joints were studied. The normal stress on the footing-soil interface and displacements occurred were also the object of the study. The procedure compared the solution using immovable supports with hypothesis admitting footing of various sizes by computing the effects of Soil-Structure Interaction. To obtain the results was performed a numerical modeling using finite element method using SAP 2000® software. The results confirmed that the initial estimate was that, even with small dimensions footings supporting large loads resulting from eccentricity moments and still involved only compressive stresses on the soil-footing interface.
O engenheiro projetista de estruturas normalmente considera que o solo, elemento que suporta as fundações de uma edificação, comporta-se como sendo um maciço indeformável permanecendo inalterado após a aplicação do carregamento ao longo do tempo. A prática no projeto de fundações indica porém que o solo quando submetido ao carregamento de uma edificação se deforma e com isso provoca uma perturbação na estrutura. Este fenômeno é denominado Interação Solo-Estrutura e teve os seus efeitos computados para um Galpão Metálico Treliçado em Arco Metálico Circular. Foram estudadas as alterações dos esforços e tensões nas hastes da estrutura metálica e os deslocamentos verificados nos seus nós. As tensões normais na interface sapata-solo e os deslocamentos ocorridos também foram objeto do estudo. O procedimento comparou a solução utilizando apoios indeslocáveis com as hipóteses admitindo sapatas de várias dimensões computando-se os efeitos da Interação Solo-Estrutura. Para a obtenção dos resultados foi efetuada uma modelagem numérica utilizando o Método dos Elementos Finitos através do software SAP 2000®. Os resultados encontrados confirmaram a estimativa inicial que era a de que, mesmo sapatas com pequenas dimensões suportando grandes excentricidades decorrentes de cargas e momentos ainda assim trabalhavam apenas com tensões de compressão na interface sapata-solo.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the need to better care for the environment, innovative business models are helping to counter the damage of the fast fashion system - a phenomenon in the fashion industry whereby production processes are expedited in order to get new trends to the market as quickly and cheaply as possible. Designing products with a focus on their renewability can shift the product-consumer relationship. The closed loop concept of a “circular economy” is emerging as a viable and promising solution to the current linear business model. This study explores the possibilities of a more mindful approach to systems of production and consumption through material explorations using plastic from water bottles, paper from old newspaper and magazines, and fabric leftovers from pattern making within a circular economy. It considers the generative and renewable approaches in redefining how fashion engages with the components and raw materials of the industry. The research demonstrates a circular approach to the production of hospitality accessories in an effort to develop new intersections between products, materials, and consumers. The accessories are designed using discarded, reformulated denim–an abundant and underutilized byproduct of the fashion industry­–to reduce waste that currently occurs every time hotel chains and airlines produce disposable giveaway products from new materials.

The aim of the present research is to develop a theoretical model that could predict the trailing-edge separation over a circular-arc aerofoil and its effect on the pressure distribution, and on the lift. The model uses sources, in a potential flow, to simulate the effect of the separated region on the pressure distribution. An integral method, turbulent boundary-layer development, combined with the irrotational pressure distribution on the circular-arc predicts the point of separation. To make sure that trailing-edge separation is present alone and mostly to avoid any difficulties in predicting the boundary-layer flow after reattachment, the aerofoil is studied at design incidence.
Two different circular-arc aerofoils were tested; one of 10% and one of 18% camber. The calculation for the 10% aerofoil did not predict any separation at design incidence, which was confirmed experimentally. The theoretical model predicted the right position of separation for the 18% aerofoil. It also provided a good simulation of the pressure distribution, including the right value for the base pressure and a good prediction of the lift. It follows that the pressure distribution when integrated, gives a good estimate of the pressure or form drag. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

An arched structure provides an effective load carrying system for large span structures. When it comes to long span roof structures, timber arches are one of the best solutions from both structural and aesthetical point of view. Glulam arched structures are often designed using slender elements due to economic consideration. Such slender cross-section shape increases the risk of instability. Instability analysis of straight members such as beam and column are explicitly defined in Eurocode. However, for instability of curved members no analytical approach is provided in the code, thus some numerical method is required. Nonetheless, an approximation is frequently used to obtain the effective buckling length for the arched structures in the plane of arches. In this master thesis a linear buckling analysis is carried out in Abaqus to obtain an optimal effective buckling length both in-plane and out-of-plane for circular glulam arched structures. The elastic springs are used to simulate the overall stiffness of the bracing system. The results obtained by the FE simulations are compared with a simple approximation method. Besides, the forces acting on the bracings system is obtained based on 3D geometric nonlinear stress analysis of the timber trusses. Our findings conclude that the approximation method overestimates the effective buckling length for the circular glulam arched structures. In addition, the study indicates that the position of the lateral supports along the length of the arch is an important design aspect for buckling behaviour of the arched structures. Moreover, in order to acquire an effective structure lateral supports are needed both in extrados and intrados. Furthermore, instead of using elastic spring elements to simulate the overall stiffness of the bracing system, a full 3D simulation of two parallel arches was performed. It was shown that the springs are stronger than the real bracing system for the studied arch.

Metal deposition is an additive layered manufacturing process that deposits molten metal droplets on a substrate and by repeating this process layer by layer, a complex shaped 3D geometry can be manufactured. In this thesis, the metal deposition process is performed by a robot with a wire feeder tool and a laser as energy source to melt the metal wire. The robot programming for robotized metal deposition process can be completely automated by computer aided robotics software. University West is currently developing an add-in application in a computer aided robotics software, Process Simulate, that is capable of programming the robotized metal deposition process. The first goal of this thesis was to verify the up to now developed software and the process from CAD drawing down to robot code. Another goal was to find and implement an algorithm that will reduce the number of locations on a circular arc to three locations. The algorithm to minimize the locations must be capable of changing all the different curvature paths to linear and circular arc motions which are easy to translate to robot code. The user should be able to decide the fitting precision of the approximated motion path to the original path. A real robot cell setup is modelled in Process Simulate. This lets Process Simulate generate the correct robot code for that specific cell.  Since each robot cell has its own unique setup, a custom script will be developed that changes the universal robot code, that Process Simulate generates, to the custom robot code required in this specific robot cell. The software is improved and tested from CAD drawing down to robot code but still needs to be debugged more and needs implementation of some non-existing features.

The government has made a choice to call a halt to climate change and has defined concrete milestones that everyone can use in practical terms, but the practical and knowledge side is still lacking within society. There is still no unambiguous approach for circular economy. Unfortunately, no manual is ready yet to take the steps towards 2050. The best advice to give is to start with awareness: making known to the general public. This step is a first step towards 100% circular economy. The greatest effect of circularity of a product must be realized in the design phase. Aspects such as maintenance, flexibility in use and adaptability, disassembly possibilities and the usability at end of life is determined by the design. The choice of materials what a product consists of is also important here. For this, the researcher sought a solution that supports these two important pillars. Circularity is a complex subject and there is a need to convert this complex language whereby this language becomes more intelligible to the daily users, architects, designers and product developers. Making circularity measurable, on the basis of product information from the supplier, the tool calculates the degree of circularity. The focus of the tool lies in the calculation of the impact of its materials and the amount of waste generated during the entire journey of the product. The results of the tool is named PICI© and can be compared with the certification techniques of today, except this one is circular-proof, while almost all of the certifications has been developed within a linear economy. Today's certificates will have to make room for the circularity certificates of the future. In addition, this study will also provide a direction for a circular methodology that will fully support the transition towards a circular service or product development. This research has the aim to make manufacturers, designers, architects or product developers aware what the impact of their product is, whereby the material-decision-making process will be striving for a fully circular  products and the re-use of the those materials.  This tool can motivate and make this impact of waste more visible. On top of that, this tool has a special focus on urban and architectural lighting, due to the collaboration with Spectrum advice and Design, in the Netherlands. Therefore, a case study is included within this study from Hydro Aluminum who supported this research with real-end data.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas with four and eight elements having connected grounds are designed for ultra-wideband applications. Careful optimization of the lines connecting the grounds leads to reduced mutual coupling amongst the radiating patches. The proposed antenna has a modified substrate geometry and comprises a circular arc-shaped conductive element on the top with the modified ground plane geometry. Polarization diversity and isolation are achieved by replicating the elements orthogonally forming a plus shape antenna structure. The modified ground plane consists of an inverted L strip and semi ellipse slot over the partial ground that helps the antenna in achieving effective wide bandwidth spanning from (117.91%) 2.84–11 GHz. Both 4/8-port antenna achieves a size of 0.61 λ × 0.61 λ mm2 (lowest frequency) where 4-port antenna is printed on FR4 substrate. The 4-port UWB MIMO antenna attains wide impedance bandwidth, Omni-directional pattern, isolation >15 dB, ECC 4.5 dB making the MIMO antenna suitable for portable UWB applications. Four element antenna structure is further extended to 8-element configuration with the connected ground where the decent value of IBW, isolation, and ECC is achieved.

Migration and re-migration of economically and socially marginalized Ethiopian women and girls has become a phenomenon. Based on interviews with 12 Ethiopian migrant women returned from the Middle East and the Gulf States, the primary aim of this thesis is to describe and study Ethiopian women migrants’ circular migration to the Middle East. I will mainly focus on how social dynamics in the family, gender relations and economic circumstances are intricate. The process of women’s migration and how the expectations of the family can be gender differentiated are discussed. Further, the migrant women’s power relation when class and ethnicity determine their position is discussed. Relations with the sending family and the issues related to the women who return, as well as problems affecting them at home and in the destination countries, are looked at. Various and complex issues of migration and the women’s roles are discussed with reference to the women’s experiences. Migration provides women with opportunities for social and economic mobility but can also subject them to ethnic discrimination, exploitation, and abuse. The movement is generally seen as voluntary labor migration and it has placed them in a vulnerable position both at home and abroad. Their migration is interconnected to the economic need but also the responsibilities they have towards their family and kin.

The contemporary economic, social and environmental context is at the edge of change. Governments, individuals and, companies need to take drastic measures to save the planet Earth. It has been globally communicated and understood that our lifestyle is not sustainable. If we do not transform how we produce, consume, travel and live, the future generation’s ability to evolve in the world we know today might be compromised. The study is using the Circular Economy as a way to rethink industries and furniture usage. In this case, the researcher inquired the office furniture industries. The goal at the end of the research process is to find an alternative to the linear business model established in the office furniture industry. The project is providing a holistic vision on the furniture’s journey from production to recycling. The proposal is based on the analysis of the current state of the office furniture industry to transform the linear business model to a circular model. The research was mainly lead thanks to three collaborators. The most important collaborator in the study is Steelcase. The company is the leader and expert in the office furniture field. Thanks to one year of experience at Steelcase, the researcher acquired deep knowledge about the office furniture industry in the heart of the industry of interest. It allowed to collect valuable information to understand the challenges office furniture industries are facing. And, finally, analyse the potential and challenges the transition from a linear to a circular business model represents for office furniture companies. The researcher also gained knowledge from dealers working at Blanchet-D’Huismes, who have a lot of expertise about the workplace and the office furniture industry. Finally, the last collaborator involved in the study is WeWork, a company renting workplaces, which represent the new business models appearing in the office industry. The research is lead from a designer’s point of view. Thanks to the experience and conversations with professionals from the workplace industry, valuable knowledge was acquired. With a deep understanding of the office furniture industry, the researcher designed a circular model. In order to share the findings of the research, the model was visualised with diagrams which allow anyone from the office furniture industry to understand the project. The goal of the project is to communicate the issues with the current model and propose a new approach to how the workplace could be furnished in the future.

Varje år slänger svensken 74 kilo mat per person. För att förstå vad och varför vi slänger mat gick jag igenom vad ett hyreshus slänger i soprummet. Bland den slängda maten kunde jag se att de boende äter mycket ägg och tillsammans med de boende bestämde vi oss för att dem skulle testa att bli hönsägare. I mitt designarbete har jag designat ett modulärt hönshus och ett driftsystem för att de boende i hyreshuset tillsammans ska ta hand om höns och ge sina matrester till hönorna. Jag har undersökt vad de boende behöver för skapa gemenskap kring huset och på bäst sätt sköta driften. Med insikter från denna prototyp designade ytterligare ett modulärt hönshus, denna gång matas hönsen på Konstfack med Konstfacks restaurangs matrester. Jag kallar projektet ”The urban hens” och vill med detta projekt skapa en social mötesplats och verka för en mer cirkulär matekonomi som kan öka förståelse för matens värde.

Bygg- och anläggningssektorn har en stor inverkan på den globala uppvärmningen. Byggsektorn beräknas ha ett utsläpp på 15 miljoner ton koldioxidekvivalenter per år. Byggbranschen är även världens största konsument av råvara och den står för 50% av global stålproduktion samt förbrukar mer än 3 miljarder ton råvaror. Cirkulär ekonomi är ett uppåtgående koncept inom flertalet sektorer och branscher för att skapa en hållbar utveckling. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka bygg- och anläggningssektorns förhållande till cirkulär ekonomin för att minska branschens klimatpåverkan. Vi vill undersöka hur byggsektorn kan bli klimatneutral med hjälp av cirkulära principer och initiativ som bland annat LFM30, vilket är en lokal färdplan för att uppnå de globala målen år 2030 för att bidra till ett hållbart byggande. Under analysen framkommer det hur utvalda företag ser på cirkulär ekonomi och deras kännedom kring ämnet. För att förverkliga den cirkulära ekonomins potential har flertalet arbetssätt identifierats av respondenter som arbetar inom ämnet vilket kan stödja den komplexa övergången till en cirkulär ekonomi i den byggda miljön.
The construction sector has a major impact on global warming and is estimated to have emissions of 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. The construction industry is also the largest consumer of raw materials, accounting for 50% of global steel production and consuming more than 3 billion tonnes of raw materials. Circular economics is an emerging concept in a wide range of sectors and industries for achieving a sustainable development. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the construction industry's view of circular economy in order to reduce the industry's climate impact. We want to explore how the construction sector can become climate neutral with the help of circular principles and initiatives such as LFM30, which is a local roadmap for achieving the global sustainable development goals for the year 2030, in order to contribute to a sustainable built environment. The analysis reveals how selected companies view circular economics and their knowledge of the subject. In order to realize the potential of the circular economy, different ways of working have been identified by respondents working within the subject,which can support the complex transition to a circular economy in the built environment.

The aim of the the thesis is to study the development of arch effect depending on the change of the various parameters such as grid of columns, height of embankments, material of embankment fill and material of columns. The first phase of work summarizes theoretical knowledges of stone columns and arch effect. The next phase deals with analysis of the effect of arch using numerical modeling. In the next part of the second phase circular tank based on stone columns will be modeled, where deformations and stress on columns will be monitored in changing constitutive model and applying substitute characteristics. Obtained results will be evaluated in conclusion.

Theatre artists and acting teachers throughout history have sought to find and create presence. By combining modern sports science with an understanding of systems of actor training I have suggested an approach that makes presence a trainable skill. My coach Dr. Scott Sonnon, developer of the Circular Strength Training System, has refined modern sports science to emphasize the development and maintenance of flow-state. This state allows the athlete to respond openly and freely within a constantly changing situation.By combining my life long study of acting with my eight years of work with Coach Sonnon I am developing a system to teach actors the skill of cultivating flow. This work will enhance the actor's presence and ability to handle the stress of performance while developing a strong, supple, and coordinated psychophysical instrument. Video of examples of the exercises can be found in the accompanying materials.This work was created in Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac.

Beim Graphisomorphieproblem geht es um die Frage, ob zwei Graphen bis auf Knotenumbenennungen die gleiche Struktur haben. Es ist eines der wenigen verbleibenden natürlichen Probleme, für die weder ein Polynomialzeitalgorithmus noch NP-Härte bekannt ist. Aus dieser Situation ist ein Forschungszweig erwachsen, der effiziente Isomorphiealgorithmen für eingeschränkte Graphklassen entwickelt. Der Hauptbeitrag dieser Arbeit besteht in Logspace-Algorithmen, die das Isomorphieproblem für k-Bäume, Intervallgraphen, sowie Helly- und Proper-Kreisbogengraphen lösen. Dies verbessert zuvor bekannte parallele Algorithmen und führt zu einer vollständigen Klassifikation der Komplexität dieser Probleme, da für sie auch Logspace-Härte nachgewiesen wird. Tatsächlich leisten die vorgestellten Algorithmen mehr: Im Fall der k-Bäume berechnet der Algorithmus kanonische Knotenbenennungen mit O(k log n) Platz. Eine alternative Implementation des Algorithmus kommt mit O((k+1)!n) Zeit aus – hierbei ist n die Anzahl der Knoten – und ist damit der schnellste bekannte FPT-Algorithmus für Isomorphie von k-Bäumen. The graph isomorphism problem deals with the question if two graphs have the same structure up to renaming their vertices. It is one of the few remaining natural problems for which neither a polynomial-time algorithm nor NP-hardness is known. This situation has led to a branch of research that develops efficient algorithms for special cases of the graph isomorphism problem, where the input graphs are required to be from restricted graph classes. The main contribution of this thesis comprises of logspace algorithms that solve the isomorphism problem for k-trees, interval graphs, Helly circular-arc graphs and proper circular-arc graphs. This improves previously known parallel algorithms and leads to a complete classification of the complexity of these problems, as they are also shown to be hard for logspace. In fact, these algorithms achieve more: In the case of k-trees, the algorithm computes canonical labelings in space O(k log n). An alternative implementation runs in time O((k+1)!n), where n is the number of vertices, yielding the fastest known FPT algorithm for k-tree isomorphism. The algorithms for interval and circular-arc graphs actually compute canonical representations, i.e., each vertex is assigned an interval (or arc) such that these intersect each other if and only if the corresponding vertices are adjacent, and isomorphic input graphs receive the same interval (or arc) model. This thesis also presents logspace algorithms that compute interval representations with additional properties, or detect that this is not possible: The resulting interval models can be required to be proper (no interval contains another), unit (all intervals have the same length), or to satisfy prescribed lengths for pairwise intersections (and possibly prescribed lengths of intervals).

The concept duty of care is defined as heedful, careful guarding, supervision of a minor, and/or overseeing. An obligation rests on teachers to scrupulously see to the safety (and also the well-being) of all learners entrusted to them. Hence teachers are responsible for the physical safety of learners and for creating a safe haven for them. The Civil Technology workshop teacher has an increased caring duty towards his learners due to the potential life-threatening circumstances and conditions that can prevail in his workshop compared to, for instance, the ordinary classroom environment. Furthermore, a specific legal duty rests on a person when he is placed in control of dangerous objects or machinery, seeing that he has to see to it that he ensures the safety of others through positive action. Internationally, the circular saw is statistically speaking seen to be the most dangerous woodwork machine in the Civil Technology workshop. Circular saws are responsible for more accidents than any other machine, and the most claims for damages against teachers and school managements also arise from it. Due to the underlying dangers inherent to circular saws and the presence thereof in Civil Technology workshops, it increases the risks attached to the caring supervision duty of the Civil Technology teacher to a great extent. Civil Technology workshop teachers are therefore confronted by unique challenges in their workshops. Hence it is essential that they be equipped with sufficient knowledge pertaining to educational law so as to make head against these challenges. Civil Technology workshop teachers should therefore not only be aware of all common law principles, relevant legislation and case law as applicable to workshops, but also be able to apply it in practice in the workshop environment. This practical application furthermore requires workshop teachers to be knowledgeable to be able to maintain workshop machinery in a safe working condition through regular upkeep and maintenance. An empirical investigation (n=38) was launched, based on a questionnaire filled in by all Civil Technology teachers and their heads of department North West where Civil Technology is presented as a choice subject at high schools. The aim of the empirical investigation was to determine: * what the level of Civil Technology workshop teachers‘ expertise and knowledge is regarding legal key issues concerning their caring supervising duty, and * to what extent effective safety management of woodwork machinery in Civil Technology workshops is applied. The empirical investigation found, amongst others, that: * The respondents do not have sufficient knowledge of the principles pertaining to educational law to apply it in the Civil Technology workshops of the study population practically. * Civil Technology workshop teachers and heads of department should have a high degree of expertise with a view to execute their duty of care. Poor educational law training can possibly be proffered as reason why their level of expertise cannot be seen to be sufficient in a case where an increased level of duty of car is required in potentially dangerous workshops. Following on above-mentioned findings, specific recommendations were made to all role-players involved that are involved in learner safety in Civil Technology workshops. These recommendations may possibly contribute to increased and more effective caring supervision in promoting learner safety.

The diploma thesis deals with the design and assessment of the steel construction of the car showroom in Jihlava. The ground dimensions of the structure are 40,0 x 52,0 m and the height at the highest point is 13,14 m. The supporting structure consists of a truss girder consisting of a set of arches, outer columns and an inner column with a strut. This is a freebase system, the distance of the bindings is 4.0 m. In the framework of the work is elaborated the comparison of two variants, more suitable includes the static calculation of the main supporting parts, including the joints and details. The main construction material is steel, grade S 355.

We show that given a set of n circular arcs on a unit circular, the k-cuttable Circular Arcs (kCCA) problem can be solved in O(kn) time. The kCCA algorithm is based on an existent algorithm for the Minimum cuts for circular arcs (MCCA) problem, but with modifications according to our newly found properties. These properties make arcs-sorting process become unnecessary in our algorithm. Some applications that are kCCA algorithm are also presented in this thesis.

In recent decades, the popularity of freeform shapes in contemporary architecture poses new challenges to digital design. One of them is the process of rationalization, i.e. to make freeform skins or structures affordable to manufacture, which draws the most attention from geometry researchers. In this thesis, we aim to realize this process with simple geometric primitives, circular arcs. We investigate architectural surfaces and structures consisting of circular arcs. Our focus is lying on how to employ them nicely and repetitively in architectural design, in order to decrease the cost in manufacturing. Firstly, we study Darboux cyclides, which are algebraic surfaces of order ≤ 4. We provide a computational tool to identify all families of circles on a given cyclide based on the spherical model of M ̈obius geometry. Practical ways to design cyclide patches that pass through certain inputs are presented. In particular, certain triples of circle families on Darboux cyclides may be suitably arranged as 3-webs. We provide a complete classification of all possible 3-webs of circles on Darboux cyclides. We then investigate the circular arc snakes, which are smooth sequences of circu- lar arcs. We evolve the snakes such that their curvature, as a function of arc length, remains unchanged. The evolution of snakes is utilized to approximate given surfaces by circular arcs or to generated freeform shapes, and it is realized by a 2-step pro- cess. More interestingly, certain 6-arc snake with boundary constraints can produce a smooth self motion, which can be employed to build flexible structures. Another challenging topic is approximating smooth freeform skins with simple panels. We contribute to this problem area by approximating a negatively-curved 5 surface with a smooth union of rational bilinear patches. We provide a proof for vertex consistency of hyperbolic nets using the CAGD approach of the rational B ́ezier form. Moreover, we use Darboux transformations for the generation of smooth sur- faces composed of Darboux cyclide patches. In this way we not only eliminate the restriction to surfaces with negative Gaussian curvature, but, also obtain surfaces consisting of circular arcs.

For this dissertation, we studied two-dimensional curve approximation problems by using piecewise circular arcs with geometry continuity G0 and G1. This study faced two different kinds of approximation problems: one, approximating digitized curves, and two, approximating the conversion of parametric curves. Both procedures used the maximum norm to measure the accuracy of the approximation. A digitized curve can be regarded as an ordered set of points. To approximate a digitized curve by mathematical curves often results in a compact and efficient representation for various applications. For this kind of approximation problems, some novel algorithms are proposed to approximate a given digitized curve by using piecewise circular arcs with G0 and G1 continuity. There are two types of the piecewise approximation problems, namely, (1) minimizing the number of segments of the approximate curve whose error is within a specified tolerance E>0, and (2) minimizing the error of the approximate curve whose number of segments is equal to a given integer M>0. First, we propose some new algorithms to solve the best single arc and single biarc approximation problems with respect to the maximum norm. Then, based on the results of the single arc and single biarc approximations, we introduce several knot-selection algorithms which can solve both types of approximation problems efficiently. Approximate conversions from high-order curves to low-order primitive curves are often required in exchange for data or to facilitate subsequent processing. For this issue, we discuss the approximate conversion of parametric curves by G1 arc splines. We first used iterative methods to find the best approximate biarc of a sub-piece of parametric curve, and later used the split-and-merge strategy to choose proper knot points for arc splines. Moreover, based on the intrinsic properties of the curve, some heuristic methods are proposed to facilitate the computation of approximate conversions.

After analyzing the earthquake catalog of Taiwan, we plot the events of earthquakes with magnitudes equal to or greater than 4.6 on the map of Taiwan to investigate the circular arcs of earthquakes(CAE). An intersection of two or more than two CAEs can be treated as a localized stress interaction indicator. We analyze this type of intersection happened in Taiwan from 1976 to 1988, we found that there were 68 intersections around Taiwan. Among these intersections 46 of them are important. That is, within three years after the occurrences of these 46 intersections, there were strong earthquakes happened closed to these intersections. We also analyze and explain the meanings of these intersections.

The behavior of cross connections between tunnel tubes should be three-dimensional, and is not suitable using two-dimensional numerical simulation, no matter how empirical judge or safety factor includes. Three-dimensional analysis of under different RMR and lateral stress ratio K. The cross section shape of main tunnel is triple-circular-arcs for main tunnel, and horse-shoe for cross connections. The widths of the main tunnel and cross connection are 17 and 7 meters respectively, and the circular centers The research results show that stress concentration is significant around the penetration region of cross connections, and the concentration is higher in the acute side than obtuse side for inclined cross connections. The influential region of cross connections depends on the rock condition, the region increases if RMR decreases, the tendency is significant if cross connections are located on poor rock.

The primary goal of this research is to use the concept of the strongest intersections of the circular arcs of earthquakes to predict the future strong earthquakes. Filtering down the seismic data through earthquakes of magnitude 6 ,when five points are approximately uniformly distributed along an arc ,it is called the strongest circular arcs of earthquakes. This thesis aims to find out the strongest intersections of the circular arcs of earthquakes and use statistics to analyze the strong events happen near the intersections, and try to find the connection between them. The analysis of the intersections of the circular arcs of earthquakes was developed from the concept of stress concentration in crust and the strongest intersection of the circular arcs of earthquakes is named by Professor Hin-Chi Lei. The purpose of the study focuses on the earthquakes in Japan area, from 1995 to 2004, recorded in seismic data of Japan Meteorological Agency. We have found 13 strongest intersections and 7 strongest double intersections of circular arcs of earthquakes . For every case , in the circular predicted region with the radius equalto the quarter of the smaller arc length of the intersections, at lease one magnitude 5.7 earthquake can be found within 3 years after the formation of the strongest intersection of circular arcs of earthquakes .This result confirms the connection between the strongest intersections of circular arcs of earthquakes and the strong earthquakes happened after them.

This study uses the concept of strongest intersection of circular arcs of earthquakes to find the area where the stress is concentrated, and attempts to predict the time of occurrence and the place of the sequential strong earthquake. The data source is provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the seismic data from 2005 to 2014 which is selected to make into an earthquake catalog. At the beginning, the distribution of seismic events with a minimum magnitude of 6 or above is analyzed through MATLAB, and the minimum magnitude of the observed earthquake events is decreased gradually until the two first occurrence and intersecting circular arcs of earthquakes are found. Here the arc of earthquakes is composed of five or more than five earthquake events which are distributed approximately uniformly. The intersections found by this method are called the strongest intersection of circular arcs of earthquakes. The circular predicted region is defined by taking the intersection point as its center and the radius can be 70Km or a quarter of the length of the shorter one between the two arcs of the intersection. Inside the predicted region, we look for the strong earthquakes occurred after the formation of the intersection. And the strong events are analyzed by statistics. The intersection of circular arcs of earthquakes is used to estimate the region of stress concentration. The concept is derived from the uniform distribution pattern of tension cracks in the rock and the uniformly arranged holes under in a pressure plate. According to the statistical results. The relation between the strongest intersection of circular arcs of earthquakes and the subsequent strong earthquakes is quite strong.

This study is based on the concept of "the strongest intersection of circular arcs of earthquakes" proposed by Professor Hin-Chi Lei in the paper [3]. We apply this concept in the United States to test whether the method is applicable to the United States and try to improve the method. Using the data of the US Geological Survey (USGS) as the catalog of earthquakes, the magnitudes of events are filtered from large to small. When the first appeared arc intersection is obtained, we call it the strongest intersection of circular arcs of earthquakes, and the intersection is used to predict strong earthquakes. We perform the statistics and comparisons to find the correlation between the two as a reference for future strong earthquake prediction. This research selects Alaska and California as the research areas. The time is from the first half of 1995 to the second half of 2004. The time interval is half a year to find the strongest intersection. There are 15 effective intersections in Alaska and 9 in California. Then, with the scale of 5.7, 6.0 and the predicted region with radius of 70 km, Lmin/4, Lmin/3, we make statistical charts to compare the follow-up trend of the large earthquake, and further explore the impact of the double intersection, and finally compare the result with the thesis of Jhih-Wun Lin [10]. Although the Alaska region and the California region belong to the Pacific Rim seismic zone, the Aleutian Islands under Alaska belongs to the same squeezing volcanic zone and the cryptic zone, while the California area is the staggered plate across the north and south of the San Andreas fault. This study will explore the application of the strongest intersections of circular arcs of earthquakes in these two regions, and try to find out what are the same and different between them.

This study attempts to apply the concept of "the strongest intersection of the circular arcs of earthquakes" which currently used in Taiwan to regions in and around California and Alaska. When searching for the earthquake events from the earthquake catalogue, we gradually decrease the magnitude of earthquakes events from 6 or higher until the first intersection of the circular arcs appears and call it "the strongest intersection of the circular arcs of earthquakes". If in one region there are multiple circular arcs at the same time with the same minimum event magnitude, the arcs with the earliest confirming time will be selected to from the intersection. Then, the intersection will be analyzed and we try to find the relation between the intersection and the nearby strong earthquakes happened after the formation of it. At the same time, the study will establish an earthquake catalogue for research. The earthquake catalogue is divided into two regions of Alaska and California. And the selected data for earthquake events are from the first half of 2005 to the second half of 2014. In Alaska we found 19 strongest intersections of the circular arcs of earthquakes, and in California we found 15 strongest intersections of the circular arcs of earthquakes. The circular prediction reigon of strong earthquakes takes the intersection point as the center and 70 km or Lmin/4 as the radius. Here Lmin/4 represents a quarter of the shortest arc length in the two arcs of the intersection. Afterwards, each intersection is regarded as a case to explore how many days required for the subsequent strong earthquakes in the prediction area, and then we carry out the statistics and analysis of all the intersections from the first half of 2005 to the second half of 2014, and then discuss the impact of the strong earthquake. Alaska、California and Taiwan are all belong to the Circum-Pacific Seismic Zone. The Aleutian Islands which located below Alaska belong to volcanic zone and subduction zone, and San Andreas Fault is transform fault crossing California from north to south. The study will explore the application of the strongest intersection of the circular arcs of earthquakes in these two regions.

Conjectured in 1943, Hadwiger’s conjecture is one of the most challenging open problems in graph theory. Hadwiger’s conjecture states that if the chromatic number of a graph G is k, then G has a clique minor of size at least k. In this thesis, we give motivation for attempting Hadwiger’s conjecture for circular arc graphs and also prove the conjecture for proper circular arc graphs. Circular arc graphs are graphs whose vertices can be represented as arcs on a circle such that any two vertices are adjacent if and only if their corresponding arcs intersect. Proper circular arc graphs are a subclass of circular arc graphs that have a circular arc representation where no arc is completely contained in any other arc. It is interesting to study Hadwiger’s conjecture for circular arc graphs as their clique minor cannot exceed beyond a constant factor of its chromatic number as We show in this thesis. Our main contribution is the proof of Hadwiger’s conjecture for proper circular arc graphs. Also, in this thesis we give an analysis and some basic results on Hadwiger’s conjecture for circular arc graphs in general.

Laminated circular arches possess great strength-to-weight ratio and good resistance to corrosion, and therefore have been widely used in a variety of engineering fields. The major problem encountered in the application of such composite structure is attributable to separation of adjoining plies commonly called delamination. This drawback of material largely arises from manufacturing imperfection or impact loading, and inevitable leads to reduction in the stiffness and resistance strength. Buckling and postbuckling of delaminated circular arches are investigated in this work to accurately predict the load capacity. On the basis of geometrically nonlinear finite element method and perturbation technique, postbuckling equilibrium paths are obtained as a number of asymptotic expansions of a gauge parameter. Several support conditions are considered for numerical studies.

This paper focuses on finite element stress analysis of a complementary circular-arc curvilinear gear set. Firstly, the mathematical model of the complementary circular-arc curvilinear gear set was developed based on the theory of gearing. Tooth contact analysis (TCA) is performed to study the influences of gear design parameters and assembly errors on the transmission error. The original complementary circular-arc curvilinear gear is in line-contact and is sensitive to assembly errors. A commercial finite element analysis (FEA) package, ABAQUS, was utilized to perform stress analysis of five contact teeth pair, and the bending stress of complementary circular-arc curvilinear gear was compared with that of conventional spur gears. In addition, a method of tooth modification was proposed in this thesis to introduce point contact in a modified complementary circular-arc curvilinear gear set. Tooth contact analysis and FEA were utilized to investigate the transmission error, contact pattern and bending stress of the proposed modified complementary circular-arc curvilinear gear set. Finally, experimental contact patterns of both original and modified complementary circular-arc curvilinear gear sets were also performed on a single flank testing machine to verify the results from TCA and FEA.

In this thesis, we shall present two efficient algorithms on circular-arc graphs and multiple stacks manipulation, respectively. It is divided into two parts as follows:   PART I: An O(n) Time Algorithm for the Minimum Connected Dominating Set Problem on Circular-Arc Graphs.   In this part, we shall present an algorithm to solve the minimum-cardinality connected domination problem on circular-arc graphs. Given the ar model with endpoints sorted, the algorithm takes only O(n) time and O(n) space where n is the number of arcs (vertices).   PART II: An Efficient Algorithm Using Linked Blocks for Multiple Stacks Manipulation.   A new and efficient algorithm for multiple stacks manipulation is proposed in this part. Initially, our algorithm assigns the storage to blocks of almost equal size and starts out with all empty stacks and a linked free-blocked list which is a linked list constructed by the blocks. After performing the initialization step, the basic operations of each stack such as PUSH and POP can be done efficiently. According to our simulation results, it is not hard to see that our algorithm is more efficient than the best previous algorithms [Yang et al. 1991; Chang et al. 1991].

Among the existing literature, the scattering problems of SH waves have been investigated extensively in different areas. But, only those for a few simple geometric shapes can be solved by using the method of separation of variables to get exact solutions. Since exact solutions are not easily obtained, if series solutions can be constructed, they may supplement the deficiency of exact solutions. Thus, concerning a semi-circular canyon with unfilled and filled circular-arc convexes inside, the author aims to make good use of the region-matching technique to derive their series solutions. Based on the region-matching technique, at first a circular-arc auxiliary boundary is introduced to divide the entire analyzed region into two sub-regions. In each sub-region, the expansion of each wavefield is obtained by satisfying the governing equation and parts of boundary conditions by using the wavefunction expansion. Then, a suitable Graf's addition formula achieves the necessary coordinate transformation. After constructing simultaneous equations, the surface displacement amplitudes can be evaluated. Graphical results are presented to exhibit the effects of incident frequency, angle of incidence, protrusion thickness, and shear wave velocity on surface motions. At last, the proposed series solutions can serve as benchmarks for the validation of other numerical methods, especially for high-frequency cases.

Esta dissertação resultou de um processo de continuidaderelativamente a uma experiência prática antecedente à sua realização,no âmbito da disciplina de Projeto IV, durante o ano letivo 2012/13, eque consistiu no desenvolvimento de uma proposta para um edifício deplanta circular.Atualmente, no panorama urbanístico e arquitetónicoocidental, em geral, a planta circular é ainda vivenciada de um modoexcecional relativamente ao tecido edificado existente. Na maioria dasobras em que surge utilizada, verifica-se que a sua adoção resultanormalmente, de uma aplicação de um programa de uso igualmentemuito específico.Este estudo, procura demonstrar que ao longo da História severifica a existência de uma multiplicidade de exemplos de plantacircular, que possuem uma elevada heterogeneidade programática,assim como adquiriram um elevado grau de complexidade na suageometria de compartimentação.Existiu sempre durante a realização deste trabalho, o critériode manter à margem qualquer abordagem quantitativa ou absoluta,sobre o tema da planta circular.Trata-se sobretudo, de um estudo que se debruçaessencialmente em matéria relativa ao posicionamento da geometria do círculo no contexto historiográfico da arquitetura ocidental, assimcomo nas questões de natureza plástica, no que respeita essencialmenteà exploração desta geometria para fins espaciais e utilitários.Este trabalho, conta também com o desenvolvimento de umestudo tipológico experimental, onde foram considerados alguns dosproblemas inerentes à especificidade da "planta circular" enquantobase formal na conceção de espaço.No campo bibliográfico, ainda se verifica uma certaescassez de abordagens específicas ao tema, o que se tornou tambémum fator de motivação para o investimento neste estudo.
