Texto completoThe textiles belonged to the basic necessities and were also valuable properties in Mesopotamia, during the Ist millenium BS. The purpose of this study is to undersand how the textile fibres were produced, what were the technics of manufacturing of these objects and their various uses in the Babylonian society. The raw materials were partly produced locally and partly imported through long distance trade. The wool, the main textile raw material, came from sheep herds belonging in majority to the institutions (temples and palaces). These institutions were redistributing the wool in the society by the payment of salaries to workers, by sales or exchanges. A lot of people were involved in textile production : professional craftsmen working for the temples or for the urban customers, women working at home for the profit of an institution or for their own family. The "chaîne opératoire" of textile manufacturing was following several steps, and reveals a specialisation of the craftsmen more important than before. The study of the textile terminology in Akkadian shows the diversity of the uses of these objects in the Babylonian society. Clothes were markers of identity. Lastly, the textiles had an economic value. They circulated inside the society through social exchanges and economic transactions. The study of the textiles reveals some fundamental aspects of Babylonia's history during the Ist millenium BC, for instance the openness of its economy to external trade, a craft production decentralised into the hands of individuals and not controlled exclusively by the institutions, and strong social conventions expressed by the apparel

Texto completoRésumé en anglais : Mixed livestock farming systems, i.e. where two or more animal species are kept on the same farm simultaneously, could potentially enhance system productivity, while limiting the use of external inputs. In lines with the agroecological principles, these farming systems are being developed in organic farming, where benefits come from both species combination and implemented practices. This work aims at describing and understanding farm operation of multi-species livestock systems in organic farming as well as analyzing their multi-performance, i.e., technical, economic, environmental and social performance. Two methodologies have been used to describe the farm operation: i) ecological network analysis that characterize interactions between farm components through fluxes. This method has been applied here for the first time on temperate livestock farms; and (ii) a set of indicators that we proposed to represent the integration level of the different components of the system through agronomic interaction, but also through work organization and sales management. These two methods were implemented on 17 farms, each associating beef cattle with either sheep, pig or poultry in two different regions: Auvergne and Occitanie. Then we used a larger farm network of 96 mixed organic farming systems from six European countries that covered a broader diversity in term of animal combination in order to study farm productive efficiency at three different levels: (i) use of inputs, (ii) use of concentrates, (iii) animal feed vs. human food competition. Farm operation and performance of multi-species livestock system depend not only on the animal species that are being combined, but also on species ratio, as well as on the farming system i.e. grassland-based or integrated crop-livestock. Work organization and sales management were shown to be closely related. Systems productive efficiency is primarily limited by animal concentrate consumption but also by the level of interaction between agricultural productions. Systems efficiency is also related to human related factors explained by the composition and versatility of the working collective. On the methodology side, we suggest to use relative efficiency indicators linked solely to the type of animal production in order to highlight factors of efficient mixed systems resulting from their operation and not from differences in productivity between productions. Finally, results show antagonism that can arise between crop-livestock integration and competition between animal feed and human food, when animals are fed with an excess of cereal produced on-farm at the expense of a good management of pastures. This raises questions about feeding strategies for livestock that are compatible with sustainable food systems

Texto completoThe fruit growing sector in the Middle Rhône Valley, competed by low-cost-production countries, faces a serious structural crisis. Then, we analyze the links between the arboriculture and its territories which can constitue resources mobilized as territorial valorization forms by local actors. The historic productive model of the arboriculture in the Middle Rhône Valley, the production-shipping basin, is now questioned by two rival forces. The first, called « centrifugal », is exercised by the main shippers who enlarge their supply area to be able to deliver large volumes of standardized fruits, relevant for the main retailers demand. In the opposite, some « centripetal » forces produce a fragmentation effect in the basin. These result from territorial identification initiatives for fruits, lead by the producers.Between these forces, farmers develop some strategies to maintain economic viability of their farms. They add to the existing shipping-circuits news outlets which valorize various proximities between production and consumption. We describe multi-scale « proximity circuits », including different types of the fruits supply chain actors, of consumers and marketing chanels. These circuits are shaped by competition and complementarity relationships with the basin of production-shipping. They benefit from the local communities supports. The conclusion of the research displays a characterization of the different proximity circuits and a theorical model to analyze the diversity of territorial valorization forms in agriculture

Texto completoIn the 18th century, French wine-trade to the Dutch Republic underwent radical restructuring. This process is at the centre of this study. To start with, the quantitative development and geographical aspects of trade are highlighted. The volume of trade decreased. On the Dutch market, red wines substituted whites and a growing interest existed in old wines and producer brands. The market share of wines from the hinterland of Nantes and from the “Poitou” diminished, whereas the Languedoc, the Provence and the Rhône valley improved their share. The import was more and more concentrated in Amsterdarn. The second and third parts of this study are devoted to the organisation of the market and its institutions : the standards and forma! as well as unwritten rules that directed its functioning. The development of three institutions receives detailed attention: the Amsterdam wine auctions, provincial excise on wines in Holland and fmally, standards and regulation on the quality of wines

Texto completo: In this dissertation, I question whether the territories coordinated under food system based on “agriculture of the middle” (SYAM in French) rely on a common set of values. By combining two sets of theoretical approaches (proximity economics and actor-network theory) on four empirical case studies in France, this doctoral research analyses the various merging mechanisms at play among SYAM actors. The research results suggest that SYAM networks strengthen through alternating phases of expansion and contraction, which challenge possibilities of convergence. The common system of values emerges, develops, recomposes and reconfigures itself based on these tensions. At times, the common values create a frame of reference for collective action; at others, it becomes a framework restricting it
