Resumen
This chapter examines the storefront churches and “cults” of Illinois in the early decades of the twentieth century. Before the Negroes' mass exodus to Illinois and Chicago, migrants settling in the state had selected one or another among the orthodox faiths and had been absorbed quietly. However, the dramatic influx about the middle of the second decade of the twentieth century gave rise to a number of “storefront” churches. Several new standard churches were born during the Great Migration, including Monumental Baptist Church, Liberty Baptist Church, and Progressive Baptist Church. In addition, during the period from the start of World War I, churches of a number of other established faiths were added to the orthodox list. Furthermore, the independent churches multiplied in the latter years of the nearly three decades since 1914. This chapter considers the appeal of storefronts to common people and their undeclared religious war with standard churches, along with the emergence of the spiritualist churches as well as other churches that were regarded as cults in Illinois.

Resumen
The period between 1783 and 1829 was one of significant change for the Anglican Churches. It saw the creation of an episcopate for the colonies and the foundation of the first Anglican province beyond the jurisdiction of the crown, in the newly independent United States. In the United Kingdom, constitutional changes eroded the Anglican monopoly in Parliament. The Church continued to grapple with a mix of problems which hampered its parochial ministry, and new challenges from Evangelicalism within and increasingly numerous Nonconformists without. Anglicans in Parliament sought to legislate to control abuses and to finance expansion of the Church’s ministry. Beyond the sphere of parliamentary activity, Anglicans (especially but not exclusively Evangelicals) proved particularly willing to experiment with new forms such as lay-led voluntary societies as a means of reinvigorating the Church. The Anglican Churches emerged from these changes as much more diverse institutions than in the previous century.

Resumen
This chapter focuses on several prominent black religious institutions in Illinois, including Quinn Chapel. The establishment of Negro churches in Illinois dates from the late 1830s, with the formation of religious bodies in Brooklyn, near East St. Louis, and Jacksonville. Quinn Chapel in Brooklyn is generally credited as the initial institution (as also the first west of the Alleghenies), although there is evidence that in 1837 two Baptist clerics had organized a church at Jacksonville. In Chicago, Quinn Chapel, a branch of the African Methodist order, was the first Negro congregation. While there was no formal black church organization in Illinois until the late thirties, there had been religious practice of one sort and another among the Negroes. This chapter looks at the rise of various Negro churches in Illinois and how religion became the leading force and attraction in the life of the race in the state.

Resumen
This essay examines conflicts concerning sex, sexuality, and gender within Black churches. Black churches are American Protestant churches with a predominantly Black leadership and congregation. Often serving the oppressed and underprivileged, Black churches have a history not only of providing for the spiritual needs of Black Americans, but also of fighting for social justice. Increasingly, controversies have begun to emerge within these churches, about gender equality, HIV/AIDS and safer sex education, and, perhaps the most controversial, about homosexuality and same-sex marriage. This essay discusses how Black churches have responded to these issues and the impact that HIV/AIDS has had on this response. Additionally, examples of the role of women and sexual minorities in Black church denominations and congregations will be provided.
