Cholangiocarcinoma, which arises from intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile ducts, is a relatively uncommon malignant neoplasm; however, incidence is increasing world wide. This disease is reported to occur more frequently in Japan than in Western countries with approximately 16,000 deaths per year from biliary tract cancer in Japan. Cholangiocarcinoma has commonly been classified into 3 broad categories based on tumor location: intrahepatic, hilar, or distal. Hilar cholangiocarcinoma (Klatskin tumor) is an uncommon neoplasm arising from the biliary confluence or the right or left hepatic ducts.
