Abstract The purpose of this study is to discuss how to use learning portfolio as an evaluative method in the reading and writing of Chinese language in Taiwan. The questions discussed include: (1) how to design learning portfolio in traditional curriculum structures; (2) the influence of learning portfolio in students’ reading abilities; (3) the influence of learning portfolio in students’ writing abilities; (4) the strategies for effective learning portfolio design in traditional curriculum structures. In this study, I have used learning portfolio to evaluate the students in a sixth-grade class in Da-yuan Elementary School in Taichung. The action research methodology and the qualitative research approach have been used. By using observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentary analyses, I have collected the basic data for this study. After detailed analysis and induction, I have found the following conclusions: (1) The most important factors teachers should consider in designing learning portfolio include the content of the textbook and the detailed guidelines for the goals described in the First to Ninth Grade Curriculum Alignment movement. (2) Using learning portfolio can positively enhance students’ reading abilities in the targeted class. By using learning portfolio, students can (1) read different kinds of books; (2) enhance their abilities to use reference books; (3) improve their abilities to solve questions; (4) enhance reading abilities by using effective reading strategies; (5) learn how to accumulate the data to improve their learning portfolio; (6) improve their scopes in thinking by using the learning activities lists; (7) learn how to effectively use the computer to improve their language abilities; and most importantly, (8) have the habit of active learning. (3) Using learning portfolio can positively enhance students’ writing abilities in the targeted class. By using learning portfolio, students can (1) cultivate their habit to write by reading different kinds of books; (2) enhance their scopes in writing; (3) enhance students’ techniques in writing from the better understanding of the topic discussed, selection of the materials to the arrangement of paragraphs; (4) help students improve their ability to use everyday idioms; (5) feel that writing is interesting because they can use their creative abilities. (4) In order to make using learning portfolio more effective, teachers, students, and parents should work together to ensure the success of students. Also, school authorities should improve their support by buying more teaching facilities and software. Keywords: learning portfolio; action research; reading ability; writing ability.
