Resumen

Chinese students have historically come to study in the United States at the college and post- secondary levels. In the last ten years, this phenomenon has spread exponentially to the high school level, but scant research exists on this topic. This paper investigates why Chinese students come to study in U.S. high schools, who these students are, what their academic and social experiences are, and what can be done to support them. A qualitative study was conducted, with one on one interviews with 14 high school students from three different high schools, one all male school, one all-female, and one co-ed. Cultural capital theory (Bourdieu and Passeron, 1977) underscores and helps illuminate the data. While the findings mirror those of research completed at the college level, something deeper emerged. Chinese students possess the cultural capital to make this journey, and the habitus that gives them the courage and perseverance to navigate it, but that capital and habitus doesn't always transfer to the field of the U.S. high school environment. While Chinese students perceive students and teachers as helpful and kind, there is much more U.S. high schools can do to support them. In the end, Chinese students use the traits they've learned from their families and their culture to meet their goals, escape the Chinese style of education and the Gaokao exam, acclimate to the culture, and go on to attend U.S. colleges.

Qin, Bibin. "Wage earnings of Chinese in the United States: individual and contextual determinants". Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3213.

Texto completo
Resumen
The objective of this dissertation is to identify both individual and contextual characteristics that may affect the wage earnings of Chinese in the U.S. labor market. The major individual characteristics include education, labor experience, and English ability; the contextual factors include percent of Chinese Americans, percent of Asian Americans, percent of nonwhites, percent of Chinese-owned businesses, occupational and residential segregation between Chinese and whites, and unemployment rate. Using the combined data of one percent and five percent 2000 Public Use Microdata Samples for 70 metropolitan areas, hierarchical linear models (HLM) were run for three groups of Chinese: native-born, foreign-born U.S. citizens, and foreignborn non-U.S. citizens. The results show that the returns to education are highest for the native-borns but lowest for the non-U.S. citizens. A command of good English benefits recent immigrants more than the native-borns. Labor experience tends to bring positive gains to both native-born and foreign-born U.S. citizens but shows no effects on earnings of foreign-born non-U.S. citizens. The results support both the human capital and assimilation perspectives. The HLM results indicate that occupational segregation from majority whites tends to impose a strong and negative effect on the earnings of native-born Chinese; a higher percentage of Chinese-owned businesses tends to increase the earnings of only foreign-born U.S. citizens; unemployment rate is likely to depress the wage earnings of the foreign-borns but not the native-borns. This suggests that Chinese workers with a different immigration history face the labor market differently. Residential segregation, percent of Chinese Americans, percent of Asian Americans, and percent of nonwhites, do not show any direct effects. Occupational segregation, the percent of Chinese-owned businesses, and the representation of the Chinese population are found to impact earnings indirectly through the individual characteristics. All these findings suggest that contextual factors do not necessarily impose direct effects on wage earnings; however, they may transfer their effects onto earnings via individual characteristics. This study represents an attempt to bring new insights into earnings attainment models and an addition to the meager body of knowledge concerning both individual and contextual factors that may affect the earnings process of a minority group in the United States. The strengths of using the HLM techniques, the limitations of the study, as well as issues for future study, were also discussed.

Morrison, Robert Maxwell. "An Analysis: Complex Interdependence and the Chinese-United States Cyber Relationship". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/83572.

Texto completo
Resumen
The United States and the People's Republic of China maintain a unique relationship due to the high levels of interdependence between the countries' political, economic, military, and social functions. This association has been complicated in the past by Chinese industrial cyberespionage (CE) carried out against United States organizations and individuals in pursuit of economic advancement. This paper examines the nature of Chinese-American relations and determines whether its features adhere to Robert Keohane and Joseph Nye's theory of complex interdependence in Power and Interdependence. Further, this paper also explores possible reasons for a decline in Chinese CE beginning in mid-2014 and what impact this could have on the two countries' relations moving forward.

Resumen
This thesis seeks to analyse the relationship between China\'s assertiveness and US hegemony in Latin America in the period 2001-2015. The analysis was done by mixing quantitative and qualitative methods, and has as a central hypothesis that the American hegemony (which is assumed in retraction) negatively affected China\'s assertiveness in the region. The thesis consists of seven chapters, ranging from general conclusions to particular conclusions. The hypothesis proves empirically, but variations are also found between countries and variations by economic activity. I conclude that China approached Latin America through a strategy of accommodative assertiveness, and Latin American countries responded to that approach aiming at diversifying their relationships.

International students who experience difficulties in a new culture are often considered to have suffered a breakdown in their normal healthy psychological functioning, and therefore need therapy and counselling (Pedersen et al, 1976). This study views failure and problems experienced by the sojourner as a result of lack of the necessary new social skills and knowledge. Social networks, particularly friendships, are thus extremely important in that such networks are not only source of social support, but also major channels through which such skills and knowledge are acquired. Guided by social support theories and social skills theories, this study examines the following research questions through the survey and the interview with a sample of Chinese students at Northwest University I and five other universities across the United States. How is adjustment of Chinese students related to their friendship patterns? What are the friendship patterns of Chinese students? What are the primary functions of the friendship patterns of Chinese students? How is the degree of difficulty felt by Chinese students in different social situations related to their friendship patterns? How is social adjustment related to the degree of difficulty felt by Chinese students in different social situations? Some additional questions related to the five research questions were also addressed in this study. The study showed there were different functions for different friendship patterns among Chinese students. Despite different functions, friendships are very important for Chinese in their adjustment to the United States. However, students belonging to the bi-cultural friendship pattern were more satisfied with social as well as academic aspects of their life in this country than those who belong to the mono-cultural friendship pattern. Among different factors contributing to social adjustment, social skills account most for the variance of social adjustment among Chinese students. This study concluded with suggestions for forming institutional policies toward international students in American higher education, training of international students both at the home country and the host country, and advice to prospective international students, particularly Chinese students.

Resumen
Historically, Chinese immigrants to the United States are a special group. They were or almost were banned from 1882 to 1968. Since in 1968 the United States abolished national origin quotas and eliminated national, race, or ancestry as a basis for immigration, thousands of Chinese immigrants came to the United States. The total population of Chinese immigrants to the US between 1980 and 2002 was 911,220, whereas it was 136,843 between 1891 and 1979. Not only did the population of Chinese immigrants have great change, the quality of Chinese immigrants also had substantial difference from those immigrated in the last century. However, there are very limited literatures focusing on the dynamics of Chinese immigration in these twenty years, which is the most important time period for Chinese immigration. The following study tries to describe the dynamics of Chinese immigration to the United States between 1980 and 2002; and analyze the influence of the American immigration laws on Chinese immigration. The dynamics of Chinese immigrants are described and analyzed by different migration categories. Other social and economic factors are added to comprehensively understand the change of Chinese immigration.

Hsueh, Kuei-Hsiang. "Family caregiving experience and health status among Chinese in the United States". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/279876.

Texto completo
Resumen
It is estimated that by 2025 the Asian population in the United States will be over 40 million; it will represent nearly 10% of the total U.S. population. Currently Chinese immigrants are the largest Asian group and constitute 22.6% of all Asian immigrants. With the Chinese immigrant population growing steadily, the Chinese elderly population will increase in the future. Historically, "Hsiao" (filial piety in English), rooted in Confucianism, teaches Chinese people to pay respect to living parents and provides rules for culturally defined intergenerational relationships and family caregiving, and putting family needs above individual interests. Among the Chinese, family caregiving is perceived as a duty, obligation, responsibility, and cultural virtue. The purpose of the study was to test a theoretical model specifying how factors including subjective beliefs of traditional filial obligation, subjective feelings about role requirements, perceived burdens, perceived rewards and use of coping affect Chinese caregivers' health in the United States. The aim of this study was to understand how caregivers' cultural background and the appraisal of family caregiving affect caregivers' well-being. Data from 137 caregivers were used to describe sample profile and for model testing. The original model failed to explain the data adequately. Two revised models were developed. Results suggest that data fit better with physical health, as indicated by CFI = .91 and the χ²/df ratio = 2.9, than mental health model, as indicated by CFI = .90 and the χ²/df ratio = 3.5. Findings suggest caregivers' beliefs of traditional filial obligation is a primary predictor for caregivers' physical health. Caregivers' subjective beliefs of traditional filial obligation affect caregivers' physical health not only directly but also indirectly. Implications for nursing research, practice, education and theory construction, and policy making were addressed. Limitations and recommendations for research design and interpretation of model fit were described. Further studies are needed to compare differences in cultural influences among different ethnic groups, identify effective coping style and test the effect of intervention caregivers' health.

Resumen
Following China's open door policy in the late 70's and early 80's, there has been a significant increase in the number of Chinese students and scholars attending academic institutions in the U. S. As sojourners in a foreign culture, Chinese students inevitably experience difficulties in their daily life and academic endeavors. The purpose of the thesis is to examine what are the specific situations that are perceived by Chinese students as stressful, how , they cope with the situations, and whether there are correlations between the perceived stressors, coping strategies, and the academic, performance of the Chinese students.

The thesis examined the differences between the Chinese market, a fast-growing emerging market, and that of the United States, a well-known developed market. In order to understand the overall performance of the Chinese stock market, the research compared the risk and returns characteristics of Chinese stock markets using the S & P 500 Index for the 2000-2005 period. Findings show that significant differences exist between the Chinese and the U.S. markets. The thesis also attempted to identify the characteristics of the Chinese markets that hinder their efficiency.

Sun, Xiaocheih. "Behavioral Differences in the Classroom: U.S. University Teachers and Chinese University Teachers". PDXScholar, 1995. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4921.

Texto completo
Resumen
Although intercultural scholars examine the differences in cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes between the U.S. and China, few specifically have studied cultural differences between U.S. and Chinese university classrooms. This study examines behavioral differences exhibited by U.S. teachers in U.S. university classrooms and Chinese teachers in Chinese university classrooms. This research addresses three areas of significance. First, Chinese students studying in the U.S. who read this thesis may be better able to cope with the U.S. educational system and communicate more effectively with both U.S. students and teachers. Second, this research may help U.S. university teachers to better understand the Chinese culture and Chinese students. Third, this research may increase U.S. teachers' awareness of and sensitivity to the increasingly multicultural classroom environment in the U.S. Three male university teachers in the U.S. and three male university teachers in China were observed and videotaped in this study. The data analysis was guided by categories establish by Gudykunst (1988), Hofstede (1986), and Lieberman (1993) as behavioral indicators of cultural styles. Several interesting findings occurred among overall descriptive observation and qualitative accounts of observations. First, a powerful trend of behavioral differences exhibited in the classroom by U.S. university teachers and Chinese university teachers was found. The findings in this search strongly support findings by Gudykunst (1988), Hofstede (1986), and Lieberman (1993) that U.S. university teachers exhibited far more individualist/direct communication styles and small power distance/personal communication styles than Chinese teachers, while Chinese teachers exhibited more collectivist/indirect communication styles and large power distance/contextual communication styles than U.S. teachers. Second, the results of this research provide valuable insights for both U.S. university teachers and Chinese university teachers; that is, culture reflects teachers' and students' values, assumptions, and behaviors. U.S. culture reflects values, assumptions, and behaviors, such as individualism, direct communication styles, small power distance, and personal communication styles. However, Chinese culture reflects collectivism, indirect communication styles, large power distance, and contextual communication styles.

Resumen
Human trafficking has become a major illegal industry in recent years. This modern slavery takes a variety of forms, ranging from debt-bondage to sex trafficking. Trafficking in persons happens every day in every country. In this study, I will examine the phenomenon of Chinese human trafficking to and within the United States. There is currently very little ethnic research on human trafficking, let alone Chinese trafficking in particular. I will first explore existing research publications on the subject, and then examine its contribution to our understanding of Chinese human trafficking to the US. I will also evaluate what new research each work prompts. Next, I will describe my own case study of Chinese human trafficking in the San Francisco Bay area. I will discuss my findings, as well as suggest future research topics. Finally, I will examine what knowledge we have about Chinese trafficking and what knowledge we still lack. I will especially endeavor to show the need for continued ethnic research.

Resumen
Owing to immigration and natural growth, there has been a significant increase in Chinese children in English-speaking societies. When these children are brought up and educated in Britain and the USA, Chinese parents are quite anxious that their children should maintain the Chinese identity and some traditional cultural values through the learning of the Chinese language. In order to satisfy Chinese parents' aspirations, there has been a growth of Chinese supplementary schools within the Chinese communities in both Britain and the USA. To respond to the 1977 EEC (European Economic Community) Directive which requires the teaching of the official language(s) of the host country and the mother tongue/culture of the migrant/ immigrant children in schools of the member states, some British state schools in London have made Chinese language education available during or after school hours since the early 1980s. Despite the provision of Chinese language education by the voluntary and maintained sectors, problems of underachievement at school and cultural adjustment of some Chinese children remain unsolved and ignored. The intent of the thesis is to investigate some of these problems of the Chinese pupils in British schools and see the extent to which that education provision within the Chinese community and the maintained sector has met the needs of Chinese pupils and the aspirations of Chinese parents in Britain. i Similar education provision is also found in San Francisco and New York City. The two American cities are therefore chosen for the comparative study to see how far that some of the American bilingualbicultural education policies can be successfully incorporated into the British (London) system to improve the education of Chinese pupils.

Resumen
This thesis aims to compare the relative chances of occupational success of Chinese in Great Britain and the United States. The study uses data from British national Labour Force Surveys (1983 to 1989) and American Census of Population and Housing Public Use Microdata Samples (1980). Using various methods of statistical analysis, mainly logit modelling, the thesis looks at three aspects of the research question. First, analysis is conducted on the relative level of occupational attainment (in access to the service class and avoidance of unemployment) of Chinese immigrants in Britain through comparisons with whites, Indians, Pakistanis, African Asians, West Indians and Irish. Secondly, similar analysis is done for foreign-born and native-born Chinese in the U.S. through comparisons with whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Japanese, Filipinos, Koreans, Indians and Vietnamese. Thirdly, comparisons are made directly on the relative chances of occupational success for being Chinese in Britain versus being Chinese in the U.S.A. In the thesis, specific attempts are made to bring out the effects of education in determining occupational success for Chinese as well as other ethnic groups in the two countries.

Resumen
Chinese female immigrants were active cultural contributors and participants in nineteenth century America, yet Americans often simplified their roles into crude stereotypes and media symbols. The early western accounts concerning females in China created the fundamental images that were the basis of the later stereotypes of women immigrants. The fact that a majority of the period's Chinese female immigrants became prostitutes fueled anti-Chinese feelings. This thesis investigates the general existence of Chinese prostitutes in nineteenth century America and how they were portrayed in the media. American attitudes toward white women and their images of Chinese women created the stereotype of all Chinese female immigrants as immoral. Thus, they became unconscious pawns of nineteenth century American nativist forces wanting to limit and prevent Chinese immigration based on prejudicial and racist attitudes.

Ma, Wei. "Does China need a game rating system? : a content analysis of violence in popular Chinese and American electronic games". Virtual Press, 2005. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1327293.

Resumen
Contemporary research on media violence has shown the importance of examining the violent presentation of American video games and the correlation between games and the current U.S. game rating system. However, not many studies in this field have been conducted in China, especially regarding the importance of its pending official game rating system which has caused much controversy nationwide. In an effort to seek academic evidence for developing China's official game rating system, this study examined and compared the violence in fourteen of the most popular American and Chinese electronic games in 2004.These fourteen Chinese games and American games were selected for content analysis of the quantity and context of game violent interactions. The percentage breakdown of PATs (violent interactions) was coded by rate per minute, as was perpetrator characteristic, target characteristic, weapon used and visual perspective. The goal of the study was to determine if the popular Chinese electronic games carry as much violence as do popular American games, and if the context of violence in the former is significantly different from that in the latter. The American games were used as a basis for comparison to Chinese games for this study. The results of the study showed that popular Chinese games featured as much violence as American games. However, their context of violence was significantly different in terms of perpetrator characteristic, weapon used and visual perspective.Based on the results, the researcher concluded that China would definitely need a game rating system. However, the significant difference in the context of violence suggested that the Chinese rating system does not necessarily have to be the same as the U.S. system.
