A possible resolution to prevent a strong tight-knit ethnic community from diminishing is through a reawakening to the heritage of the people. In this thesis I propose the creation of a CULTURAL EMBASSY to instill pride and arouse self-awareness of the well-educated Chinese first, and eventually the Chinese of all social levels in Boston to revitalize the entire Chinatown. Architecturally, this proposed building will carry a uniqueness of its own: a kind of cultural form and vocabulary containing the expression of today's technology and embodiment of the perpetual Chinese ideology in a Boston context. The appropriate "Chineseness" will be identified through the use of cultural vocabularies of the Chinese architectural language.

Wei, Tong. "Terminologie et ontologie pour l'héritage culturel : application aux vases céramiques chinois". Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020GRALM061.
Texto completoCultural heritage is the legacy of physical artefacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that is inherited from past generations. Vases are among the most iconic objects of cultural heritage. In the context of this work, we have focused on Chinese ceramic vessels of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). There are many collections of vases in different museums in China. Although some of these collections have been digitised, they are rarely accessible in an open format and remain isolated. In addition, the lack of clearly identified terminologies is an obstacle to communication and knowledge sharing. Our work aims to respond to this issue by implementing practices drawn from the semantic web and knowledge engineering, and more particularly by building in a W3C format an ontology dedicated to the Chinese vases of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The construction of the TAO CI ("ceramic" in Chinese) ontology respects the experts' way of thinking in their conceptualization of the field, and takes into account the international standards in Terminology (ISO 1087 and ISO 704). Both approaches are based on the notion of essential characteristic and define a concept as a unique combination of characteristics. The search for differences between objects, combined with a morphological analysis of Chinese terms whose characters carry meaning in relation to knowledge of the field, allows to identify essential characteristics. The definition of concept is based on the idea that a concept is a set of essential characteristics stable enough to be named in language. We have thus proposed a specific method for building ontologies guided by the terms and essential characteristics of the domain. We have introduced new terms (neologisms) in English and concepts without any designation in language for ontology structuring purposes. The definition of terms in natural language follows the Aristotelian definition. It is based on the formal definition of concepts denoted by the terms. The construction of the ontology was done using Protégé, the most widely used environment for building ontologies in the W3C format (RDF/OWL). As the notion of essential characteristic does not exist in Description Logic, it was necessary to translate them. We have proposed some principles to this end. The terminological dimension was reduced, as is often the case, to annotations (in SKOS, RDFS) on the concepts. The TAO CI ontology is linked to external resources such as CIDOC CRM and ATT Getty for the conceptual part, and to museums for the objects. Finally, the TAO CI ontology was evaluated from the point of view of the domain (coverage) and its implementation. The ontology is in open access at the following address: http://www.dh.ketrc.com/otcontainer/data/OTContainer.owlThe last phase of the project consisted in the creation of a dedicated website. This site provides access to the different resources of the project and in particular to a bilingual (English, Chinese) electronic dictionary of the vases of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The dictionary entries correspond to the OWL classes of the ontology: http://www.dh.ketrc.com/The TAO CI ontology is, to our knowledge, the first open and reusable ontology in the format of the semantic web of Chinese ceramic vases. It is an illustration of an approach guided by terms and essential characteristics that can be applied to the construction of ontologies in other areas of Chinese cultural heritage

Texto completoSince the 1970s, the expansion of tourism in China has been exponential. While previously a marginal activity, tourism now has an important role in today’s Chinese society. The purpose of this thesis is to try to understand the complex interactions between tourism, national heritage, and cultural identities through the example of the Lijiang village, county town of the Naxi autonomous region, in the Yunnan Province. Lijiang is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has become, in a matter of a few years, one of the main destinations of inner Chinese tourism. In this thesis, we will also try to address the following question: does the use of national heritage by the touristic industry contribute to the « Disneylandisation » of China or to the emergence of an alternative Chinese modernity?

Texto completoCurrently, the protection work of intangible cultural heritage is booming. It is at the heart of attention of the media and society, and also academic research. Despite its long history, its promotion, admission and protection are recent. In this sense, the intangible heritage is still "young". As a new field and new object of research, the study involves many disciplines and safeguards require innovation and a bold research. Animation is one of the cultural industries more fashionable in China and most of the research on the animation focus on the development of the animation industry. This research considers the intangible cultural heritage as a cultural resource for animation, and explore the possible uses to promote the Chinese animation. We believe that in the contemporary cultural context, the animation is as a cultural industry that artistic entertainment and leisure, and a means of cultural transmission; it can also, by extension, be considered an employee visual imaging tool in the production and life of people. The animation is vibrant and rich in inspiration, naturally attractive, especially for young people. In a way, it is the common language of humanity. Animation must be an integral part of the protection of intangible cultural heritage; she is able to promote the heritage and transmission of intangible cultural heritage. Thus, this thesis proposes that we consider animation as a means of promoting the heritage and transmission of intangible cultural heritage. The transmission is the means, and the inheritance is the ultimate goal of protecting intangible cultural heritage. The thesis shows that animation can actually be entrusted with this mission. After the presentation of the research topic, we systematically discuss the subject through historical research, interdisciplinary research, document analysis, case analysis, field survey, etc., and dating back to foundations of existing research on the animation and intangible cultural heritage
Biville, Quentin. "S'approprier ses marges par le patrimoine mondial dans la province du Sichuan (Chine)". Thesis, Paris 1, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020PA01H059.
Texto completoThe ratification of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage by the People’s Republic of China in 1985 enabled the Chinese government to filter into an international heritage process, while pursuing national objectives internally. In this thesis, we are interested in the projects of appropriation of the Sichuan province territory, carried out under cover of world heritage. The administrative borders of Sichuan have indeed moved to the west during the 20th century, gradually integrating margin territories of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, mainly populated by Tibetan and Qiang minorities. In this context, the constitution of a cultural identity for this new provincial space constitutes an important stake, and the heritage is the privileged tool. This thesis stands at the crossroads of Geography of development, Heritage Studies, Legal geography and Geopolitics. We aim to decipher the construction of a Sichuan heritage narrative that enhances the value of Han China and replaces the province (and its current borders) in a historical process of national construction and progressive integration of the margins, through the heritage staging of an interface between China and Tibet. At the site level, the materialization of law on space shows both processes of opening up of peripheral territories through the development of heritage tourism, and an attempt to exclude local populations, via the purchase of land by the State, the transfer of people and/or the folklorization of local cultures. The comparative study of four of the five sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Sichuan has shown the establishment of a culture/nature gradient from east to west in the provincial space. In the Sichuan plain, which has long been sinized, heritage serves to highlight a Chinese cultural identity in order to show the coherence of the provincial territory. In the Tibetan foothills, it highlights natural heritage valued as Chinese landscapes, and tends to exclude minorities from the heritage narrative. In doing so, UNESCO constitutes both an instrument of legitimacy for Chinese heritage policies which pursue the objectives of enhancing the national territory, and a place of influence where the country promotes and exports its own categories of heritage

Texto completoThe topic of cultural heritage is now an important subject in Chinese cities, as the promotion of tourism has become a national priority. Our goal is to better understand the urban regeneration strategies in an historical city. We focus our dissertation on the French former concession of Tianjin, as a cultural and geographical enclave in China. Our objective is to examine the protection, restoration and development of the district and its economic, political and social impacts. Besides, we study the recent rise of Western‐inspired architectures in China, notably in the former concessions. As the globalization promotes the creation of cultural heritage, it creates renewed interest in studying tourism. Subsequently, we study the dissimilarities between the French and Chinese approaches to tourism. More precisely, we measure the geographic effects of these differences and the extent to which tourism development impacts the cultural heritage

Texto completoAs a scholar and an official, Ruan Yuan is a prominent figure of the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911). His collection of artifact, which focuses mainly on antiques like ritual bronzes, bricks and tiles, is shaped by the traditions of Chinese epigraphy or jinshi xue. The first part of the dissertation is devoted to the analysis of the collection. Its typology and formation reflect the scientific approach of antiques adopted by Ruan Yuan. His methods, which rely on the recent developments in phonology, are related to the rise of the evidential research school or kaozheng xue in XVIIIth century China. Besides this scientific approach, collected artifacts, especially stones, are also considered as objects of delectation which can be transformed into inkstones or screens which reflect the imagination of their owner. The second part of the dissertation describes how Ruan Yuan’s collecting practices are part of a larger process of conservation and transmission of cultural relics. The methods of collation of texts used to realize encyclopedia have been adapted by Ruan Yuan to publish the ancient inscriptions on metal and stone from the provinces where he served as an official. His use of conservation techniques, like the mounting of paintings, and of reproduction techniques, like the rubbing or carving of steles, allowed to preserve originals and to spread their images among scholars. Beyond the transmission of his own collection, mainly conceived as a family legacy, the creation of libraries in famous temples, which exceeded the boundaries of private property, is an important step toward the assertion of a modern definition of cultural heritage in China

Cultural heritage institutions accumulate the intellectual capital of human civilization. Especially, National Palace Museum (NPM), the leading museum of Chinese culture, conserves numerous masterpieces of historic relics of different dynasties. Nowadays the computer technologies not only support the collection management also enhance the quality of display and education. However, how to advance museum visitors’ experience and meet the needs of different cultural heritages are still issues for museums and computer technology industry. Motivated by the mentioned propositions, the author proposed interactive cultural heritage media applications to respond the challenges. The goal of these applications is toward better practices of interactive Chinese cultural heritage. Without those ground-breaking practices, the interpretational technology would not be what they are today. A breakthrough practices could provokes the progressive of multimedia in cultural heritage sector. De-/weathering technology, breath detection technology, gigapixles photography technology, multi-resolution, multi-touch interface and transparent user interface are employed in the research as key technologies. In addition, we performed evaluations for two important applications. Both the quantitative and qualitative methods are used to collect data. Finally, we will show the lessons learned from the development of actual museum applications.

China is famous for a state of ceremonies and dressing since long time ago. “Full attire with crown” is the noblest one in the history of Chinese dress. Of which outer style and inner content are both destined to traditional thought of philosophy. It makes people esteem entiquette, respect righteous and perform humanity, furthermore, reach place where heaven and man are one. Due to my teacher, Professor Wang, Yue-Chin, kept researching at this area for several ten-years, I am trying to explore the relationship between outside rule and inside culture of “full attire with crown” by analysis of philosophy. The culture heritage of “full attire with crown” is so tight with Confucianism thought that the dress system is able to achieve the final goal “man is heaven” together with Confucianism by developing entiquette, righteous and humanity. Conclusively, the tradition and evolution of “full attire with crown” are constantly developed on one line either at outside shape, colour, figure and attire or at inside Confucianism contents. They show the wisdom of Chinese ancestors in idea of “representing virtue by making all matters”. From the final conclusion of this research, I hope everybody to use knowledge, culture and tradition well in making society much brighter than ever before.

Learning Chinese has become a trend in recent years; with the majority of students being Chinese heritage learners. However, related research on Chinese learning resources designed for Chinese heritages learners are limited. Many researchers believe that Chinese learning resources for Chinese heritage learners can be stimulated culturally, but resources are limited. Therefore, the purpose of the thesis is to build up the basic principle governing language learning for Chinese learning materials. The research subjects are 18 year-old Chinese heritage learners in America and Canada. Through academic review, surveys and interviews we aim to understand learners’ needs, and create basic principles of culture oriented Chinese learning materials for intermediate Chinese heritage learners. Following are the ten principles underlying culture oriented Chinese learning resources for intermediate Chinese heritage learners: 1. The aim of the material should be clear. 2. The goal of the material is to allow learners have a better understanding of Chinese culture. 3. The content should represent the topics that the learners are interested in, and also should be in accordance with 5C principles. 4. The content should tally with learners’ knowledge. 5. The materials should be designed based on modern research. 6. The content should include both written and spoken language. 7. The cultural subjects should include: food, attitude, belief, martial arts, calligraphy, tea, and traditional custom. 8. The content should be interesting and topic related pictures should be included for visual learning. 9. The material should improve learners’ language ability. 10. A learner’s exercise book should be included.

The purpose of this study is to discuss how to design the specific teaching guidelines and modes of culture issues based on the feature “learning by traveling” of short-term program and the characters of lacking four learning skills and biculture identities of Chinese heritage. The methodologies used in this study are documentary analysis, survey and case study. The survey is to outline the culture learning need of Chinese heritage, case study has been carried out by actual teaching, and the subjects are fourteen Chinese heritage studies in T University. The researcher combined two teaching modes to teach cultures issues. Learners are interviewed after teaching. Finally researcher integrated all the results and provided suggestions of culture teaching. The results found are : 1.Chinese heritage students are bicultural learners who have the needs of learning Chinese and seeking culture identities. Thus when teaching culture issues, teachers should guide them to re-think and choose from the bicultural differences to help them develop culture identities. 2.Chinese heritage students have their inclination of cultural topics, listed by the ranking: food, legend, traditional handwork, festival, art, custom, thought, manner, religion and others. Teachers could use this sequence to choose the topics. 3.Selecting cultural topics and teaching modes in short-term program for Chinese heritages can be designed based on learners’ preferences, local resource and the curriculum type. Teaching culture issues should follow five rules, first the combination of classroom learning and culture experiencing; second, transition from surface culture to spiritual culture; third, emphasizing active participation and exchanging experiences among learners; fourth, highlighting multi activities, and the last, using culture as media, focusing on four learning skills.

Based on iconography of music and organology, this thesis uses the bell and drum tower of the National Heritage Temples of Taipei City as the study object to explore the relationship between visual image and music. Firstly, by looking into the origin of the bell and drum tower, to understand the function of the bell and drum tower and in what conditions it was set up throughout history, as well as to understand how the emphases were placed on the bell and drum in palace, city, and temple. Then, the musical imagery research procedural of Tilman Seebass is adopted to observe the bell and drum tower of the National Heritage Temples of Taipei City, which is regarded here as the static visual percept. The observation of this static visual percept includes the musical instruments’ outward appearance, decorative patterns, text contents, architecture and ornaments, so as to explore the multi-facade visual expressions and symbolic meanings of the music instrument in space. The discussion on the aspects of symbolism and culture also covers the dynamic sound. As this thesis also touches on the discussions about musical instruments, the aspect of organology is brought in to explore the ways bells and drums are used in specific cultural occasions to present the multi-facade of human life and to gain deeper understanding of the cultural meaning of these musical instruments. Finally, the meaning of the bell and drum tower in terms of the temple culture is discussed. The ritual ceremony of ringing bell and drumming on New Year eve to usher in the New Year is the most important purpose the bell and drum tower of the modern temple culture; as such, only through the recognition generated by the same life experience will enable this culture to pass on.
