Texto completoThe objective of this thesis is twofold: (1) to investigate the synergies arising from the implementation of multi-scale and multi-criteria approaches in the evaluation of rural development policies (RDP); (2) to explore the impacts and trade-offs of RDP in two selected case studies located in Italy and China. The thesis argues that multi-criteria and multi-scale approaches can be combined to provide a useful framework with which to structure an integrated analysis of RDP in order to assess their effectiveness in achieving sustainability goals across scales. The analysis is performed by selecting and evaluating multidimensional criteria, which represent the main goals of development policies in the areas of study. Moreover, multi-scale analysis is performed to define boundary conditions and trade-offs for future local development. The use of the two methodologies appears to be very significant to capture both the multidimensional and multi-scale aspects of the Rural Development Policies analysed and to generate several sets of “view-dependent” representations of rural systems that are useful for trade-off assessments.

Texto completoChinese Catholic communities living in Paris and Milan developed throughout 20th century following Asian migration flows. Being aware of the challenge of welcoming these new believers, French and Italian church authorities implemented specific structures for Catholic migrants. Through a comparative ethnographic study, this thesis offers to analyze how ecclesiastical institutions in Italy and France follow the structuring of Chinese faithful groups. During this research, we focused on churchgoers’ life stories and motivations behind their Catholic faith. More specifically, we analyzed how all these elements influenced their daily practice of Catholicism. We also studied the role that these Catholic communities play in terms of keeping connections between Chinese migrants and their culture

Texto completoThe thesis’s hypothesis is the possibility of the creation of a model for the prediction of any Italian media product in the Chinese market, by “success” meaning a cultural-economic impact equal to that of some benchmark products of the last years (the novel L’amica geniale, the film Perfetti sconosciuti, the TV-series My Brilliant Friend). Cultural impact is measured as the generation of online discourse, while the economic impact by traditional and digital indicators, for physical and online distributions respectively. The three cases used as benchmarks served to provide online discourse material from which to extract predictive variables by Python 3-supported LDA topic modelling and sentiment analysis. In chapter 1 Digital Humanities (DH) are explored and defined as a field of study. Chapter 2 summarises the main theories about cultural production. Chapter 3 details the methodology and its empirical application, also containing a section devoted to testing, which in turn confirmed the model’s reliability. Results show that DH’s tools were a proper choice, while last century’s theories of cultural production may benefit from updates. Three sets of variables to predict Italian media products in China were identified.

Texto completoThis dissertation includes three chapters which focus on the relationship between public policies and healthcare. The first chapter examines whether tax policy is effective in changing the unhealthy drinking behaviours of individuals. My findings suggest that the VAT rate increase is effective in reducing the consumption of spirits, beer and carbonated beverages, while it is not effective for wine. However, this general result change when looking at sub-groups of individuals. The second chapter studies how real minimum wages affect population health in China. I conclude that real minimum wages are negatively and significantly related to population health, a result which might be explained by the role of more stressful working conditions as a consequence of a higher minimum wage. Finally, the third chapter analyses the effects of incentive mechanisms on the behaviours of primary health workers and the subsequent effects on the quality of hypertension management. The empirical investigation suggests that negative financial incentives could motivate primary health workers and improve the quality of hypertension management. However, neither positive financial incentives nor different modes of performance evaluation are significantly related to the quality of hypertension management.

Nowadays, in the ceramic tile industry, Italy, Spain and Foshan China, which has started the industry in recent years, are the most competitive countries. According to the 2004’s data, the production of the three countries above accounts for 52% of the world’s production. As for the tile export, Italy and Spain alone account for 46% of the world’s tile export. The percentage will be up to 63% if China is added. The three countries have one thing in common-Cluster Effect. Other countries, with no Cluster Effect, can’t take the advantage in competition. It also proved that region economy is usually the best system of competition. The study has been tried to apply the information of manufacturing and consumption in the world, along with theories of Value Chain, Cluster Effect, Diamond Model to explore the development of cluster in Sassuolo Italy, Castellon Spain and Foshan China and analyze their core competition. The study shows that Sassuolo reinforce its leadership with machinery equipment, tacit knowledge and marketing strategy; Castellon upgrades the cluster with the glaze material and the science; Foshan China take part in the industry with cost advantage. Foshan China develops cluster later than do Sassuolo and Castellon, which benefits Foshan to get experience in organizing cluster with competitiveness. The competitiveness is from productivity and innovation not low wages, or a devalued currency.

This PhD thesis is an exploration into the cultures of utopian communities and the societies in which they are embedded. Members of utopian communities are engaged in transformation projects and have chosen their utopian community as a strategic place from where to make a better world. Three communities are presented in ethnographic detail: 1. Life Chanyuan in China, which has attempted to promote free-love and communism as a short-cut to heaven but was finally closed down by the state, 2. Christiania in Denmark, a colorful political community standing for consensus democracy, the fight for freedom and urban space for all, a massive market for hashish, and a counter-cultural entertainment experience for visitors, and 3. Damanhur, an Italian esoteric community, whose members see themselves as warriors on a mission to rescue humankind. Further analysis shows that all these utopian communities act as distorted mirrors of their societies by addressing their societies’ unresolved value contests. They are not just fictional fantasies of their founders. Intentional communities with utopian aspirations are presented as a regular social phenomenon related to social innovation and change and are shown to engage in historically specific conversation with their societies. This research also connects the amazing capability of story-telling of cultish groups, as well as their members adopting beliefs which at times appear extremely bizarre, with counter-cultural opposition to the dominating paradigms in politics and the economy in different societies.
