Resumen
This study explored perception processes of child rearing. A sample of parents of both special needs and typical children enrolled in preschool child development centres operating in the Vancouver, B. C. Lower Mainland region was asked to complete the Maryland Parent Attitude Scale (MPAS), the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), and a demographic questionnaire. There were no significant correlations found between parental attitudes about child rearing (MPAS) and their perception of their child, parents' perceptions of themselves as parents, or parents' perception of their relationship with their child. As well, there were no significant differences between responses of parents of special needs children and parents of typical children. Post hoc multiple regression analyses however, revealed a number of significant and interesting relationships. Results of the multiple regression analyses showed that fathers' rejecting and mothers' protecting child rearing attitudes decreased as the number of children in their family increased. It was also found that mothers perceived their children and themselves as parents more negatively than fathers. In addition, fathers' occupations as measured by the Blishen index (1987) were positively related to their perceptions of their child. Of particular interest was the outcome that male children were repeatedly viewed more negatively by their parents. As well, parents of sons saw themselves as parents and their relationship with their child more negatively than parents of girls. These results suggest that the psychological and sociological aspects of child rearing and the parent child relationship need to be assessed simultaneously. Although the expectations and cognitions of parents are an important area of study, the importance and integral nature of social, cultural, gender and socioeconomic variables cannot be ignored in formulating hypotheses and designing research in this field.

Resumen
There has been considerable interest and sometimes concern for teenage parents. This interest has developed for two reasons, firstly, it has been viewed that teenage parents are inappropriately young to have children, and secondly, it has popularly been thought that the number of female teenagers becoming pregnant and subsequently giving birth to children has dramatically increased over the last twenty years. Much of this attention has focused on the young mother, because she has been thought to shoulder the major responsibility for looking after the child. This is not untypical of research on parenting which has adopted a mother biased approach, although there has been a more recent interest in the fathers. The object of this study was to examine the experiences of one hundred young fathers, aged seventeen to twenty two, who were regularly involved with their infant. The fathers were interviewed at home and data was collected on all aspects of their family participation. Younger fathers appeared to be an extremely disadvantaged group, many had few or no formal qualifications and during a period of high general unemployment a disproportionate number of the sample were unemployed. The financial responsibilities of fatherhood placed added burdens on this group and restricted many of the opportunities that should have been available to men of this age. Contrary to popular opinion the young fathers interviewed often had long standing relationships with the mother and were highly psychologically involved with their children; although they were not always highly participant in child care activities. As with research on older fathers, younger fathers were shown not to take on the major responsibilities of caring for children, even though some (those who were unemployed) had a greater opportunity to do so. They reported being interested and involved at every stage of the child's life, even during the periods when circumstances made it more difficult for them to be highly participant; the nature of this involvement changed as the needs of the mother and the child altered. However because of their age, and as a consequence their lack of preparation, many young fathers and mothers had to negotiate a turbulent period which was sometimes very stressful. This study suggests that although being young in itself does not necessarily cause younger parents to be qualitatively different from older parents, it does indicate that they face more problems which because of their age they may be more vulnerable to.

Resumen
In this research, I explore my belief that one the reasons for the continuing poor outcomes for Indigenous people was that State-wide and national programs ignored unique local Indigenous culture and did not actively involve local Indigenous people in the development of programs for their area. I chose to examine this perception through investigation of the tension between Indigenous culture and worldview and the dominant White values of the child welfare system (broadly defined), through description of Martu child rearing practices and beliefs in the remote Western Australian town of Wiluna. The Martu live in a remote environment of material poverty, high levels of unemployment, low levels of educational achievement and poor health outcomes. The research sponsored by the Ngangganawili Aboriginal Health Service and located in its Early Childhood Centre, uses an Indigenous research approach based on Brayboy's (2005) TribalCrit to explore Martu child rearing practices, beliefs and values. It uses the stories told by the Martu in Wiluna about the way they and their families were brought up and observations of Martu families to answer research questions around Martu definitions of children and families, their concerns for their children, ways of ensuring the well being of their children, and whether there is a Martu child welfare approach. The research then considers the implications of these Martu practices for the broadly defined child welfare system. The stories told by the Martu show that they have a unique way of bringing up their children that is different to those in the dominant White culture. This uniqueness is derived from a combination of the recent colonisation of the Martu, their culture and their post colonisation experiences. The implications of Martu child rearing for the child welfare system are based on the assumption that Martu are wholly dependent on poorly designed and targeted government provided or funded services, and the current ways of delivering these services is failing the Martu. The research concludes that the key to improving outcomes for Martu children and their families is for the agencies delivering these services to form close working relationships with the Martu; operate within, understand, appreciate, and respect Martu Law and culture; understand their (personal and agency) and Martu post colonisation histories; and allow for Martu control, definition of priorities and development of strategies to address the problems.

Fedewa, Lauren Elizabeth. "Between Extermination and Child-Rearing: The Foreign Child-Care Facilities of Volkswagen and Velpke". ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2018. https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/946.

Texto completo
Resumen
During World War Two, approximately 400 to 450 Ausländerkinder-Pflegestätten, or foreign child-care facilities, were established across the German Reich as collection centers for the infants born to Polish and Soviet civilian laborers employed in the German war economy. My thesis examines two such foreign child-care facilities, the Volkswagen and Velpke children’s homes, where over 450 Polish and Soviet infants perished. Three themes provide the framework for an analysis of these two facilities: the conflict between two of the main goals of the Third Reich—racial cleansing and the exploitation of forced labor; the question of whether the establishment of the facilities and treatment of the children depended on orders from upper-level or local-level authorities; and the issue of whether the children’s deaths stemmed from intent to cause their deaths or indifference toward their fate. This thesis addresses the following questions: In terms of racial ideology and economic pragmatism, was one factor more significant in the establishment and use of the Volkswagen and Velpke children’s homes? Who, among upper-level and lower-level Nazi officials, ordinary Germans, medical professionals, and factory executives, was responsible for the children’s deaths? Were the children’s deaths intentional? What do these two facilities tell us about the other foreign child-care facilities that existed across the Third Reich? The research for this thesis draws upon two British war crimes trials held in Braunschweig and Helmstedt, Germany in 1946, the “Velpke Baby Home Case” and the “Rühen Baby Farm Case,” as well as records from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives in Washington, DC, the National Archives at College Park in College Park, MD, and digital records from the International Tracing Service Archives. Ultimately, this thesis highlights the connections between the three conflicting—and often opposing—themes. First, the trial records revealed that both facilities were exclusively established, managed, and operated by local-level officials and personnel. Second, upper-level Nazi authorities deemed alleged racial enemies a threat to the German “master race,” and were intent on enforcing a racial hierarchy in the German Reich; however, the local-level officials and staff responsible for these two children’s homes were far more concerned with maintaining productivity from the Polish and Soviet workforce, remaining indifferent toward the fate of the children at the homes. Third, while both the need for economic efficiency from workers and the belief in Nazi racial ideology influenced the establishment, management, and operation of the Volkswagen and Velpke children’s homes, there is minimal evidence that local authorities and personnel prioritized racial ideology over economics. Since both facilities were controlled locally, this thesis reveals that rather than putting racial ideological into practice and intentionally killing the children, local officials prioritized economic production. This left the fate of the children somewhere between extermination and child-rearing—between being left to die, murdered, or raised.

Resumen
Research on child misbehavior has examined the influence of many factors, including the child’s typical behaviors and functioning, child temperament, parenting strategies, parental stress, parental attributions, perceptions of parenting, and parental tolerance. The concept of parental tolerance has recently been advocated as an important variable influencing child misbehavior by Brestan, Eyberg, Algina, Johnson, and Boggs (2003) who developed two parent report measures for it. The present study investigated the validity of one of these measures, the Child Rearing Inventory (CRI). In the present study, parental tolerance as measured by the CRI was compared to other standardized measures of parent and child behaviors and observational data obtained from mother and child interactions. Scores on the CRI were expected to correlate with scores on the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI), Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2), Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (PSI/SF), and Perceptions of Parenting Inventory (POPI), and the frequency of directives, prompts, and criticisms. However, only one of the hypotheses was partially supported, where there was a significant positive correlation between scores on the CRI and the number of directives regarding the child leaving the area. The reliability of the CRI in the present study is questionable, due to an alpha of .64. This was compared to good alpha levels of .88 and .93 on the ECBI scales. The findings of the study demonstrate the need for further study of the CRI as a measure of parental tolerance, investigating its reliability with a younger age range, before exploring the validity further.

Ing, N. Rosalyn. "The Effects of residential schools on native child-rearing patterns". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42515.

Texto completo
Resumen
This paper examined the apparent effects of residential schools on the child-rearing patterns of Natives who attended these schools. Evidence came from the literature and from three interviews with persons who attended residential schools -- one male elder and two females, who answered four open-ended questions. The findings suggest that this type of educational experience caused psychological and cultural losses in self-esteem, child-rearing patterns, and Native Indian language. New and different behaviours had.to be learned by the children in middle childhood to cope and exist in a parentless environment where no feelings of love or care were demonstrated by the caretakers and the speaking of Cree and other Native languages was forbidden. Values and skills taught by Native parents/elders, and essential for survival in Native society, lost their importance in residential schools; the Native language was not taught to subsequent generations; and the separation of siblings by sex and age created strangers in families. These experiences will presumably be transmitted in some form to the next generation, thereby affecting the way Natives view themselves. To restore confidence in themselves and respect for essential patterns of child-rearing the process of healing is vital and recommended.

Texto completo
Resumen
Chinese parenting has received considerable attention from researchers around the globe. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the scholarly literature on Chinese parenting to determine how it has been conceptualized in the English language literature. A search of relevant keywords in electronic databases and reference lists of publications was conducted, followed by a narrative synthesis of the findings. Results show that the existing literature focused on the following six interrelated topics/themes: (i) different aspects/components of Chinese parenting (beliefs, values, practices and goals); (ii) relationships among parenting components; (iii) comparisons between Chinese and non-Chinese parents; (iv) parenting and child outcomes; (v) parenting styles; and (vi) factors that influence Chinese parenting. In general, existing studies examined Chinese parenting through describing parenting values, beliefs, practices and styles, and investigating the interrelationships between goals, practices and child outcomes. Implications and limitations of the review are discussed.

Whiteman, Lesleann. "Adopting nurturing and sensitive child rearing practices in Trinidad : an exploration". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13493/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study deconstructed the nurturing child rearing strategies used by a group of ‘Trinidadian’ middle class parents and early childhood professionals to alter punitive intergenerational child rearing practices, and emphasised the significant contribution warm and responsive parent-child relationships made to children’s developmental outcomes. Framed within a postcolonial context, this thesis claims the main task of parenthood is to coach, mentor, and provide a pathway for future generations. The transference of punitive intergenerational parenting practices was examined to understand the significance of these practices and its effects on parent’s ability to develop warm and responsive relationships with their children. Interviews and focus groups with ten sets of parents examined the strategies they used to build a responsive parent-child relationship. The study also investigated the professional practices of four early childhood professionals in supporting parents through the emotional journey of developing intimate relationships with their children. The main findings of the research indicates that the parents and early childhood professionals used nurturing and sensitive child rearing practices, supported by a collaborative partnership to help them alter historical, political and socio-economic challenges within the ‘Trinbagonian’ society which contributed to the transference of punitive intergenerational parenting practices. This research contributes to the literature on nurturing and sensitive child rearing practices in Trinidad and Tobago, by highlighting the specific strategies used by my study participants, which are worthy of consideration in the wider domain to facilitate nurturing parent-child relationships, and contribute to beneficial developmental outcomes for children, their families, and the society.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to develop a measure to assess parental attitudes toward childrearing. Through a review of the literature, seven constructs delineating varying maternal attitudes, styles and patterns were identified; Maternal Warmth, Control, Indulgence, Protection, Sensitivity, Play and Learning Receptivity. Employing item and correlational analyses, items were constructed and revised resulting in a new research instrument: The McGill Parental Attitude Toward Childrearing Questionnaire (MPATCR). Other variables considered included prior parenting experience, maternal age, ethnicity, occupation, employment, socioeconomic status, education, infant gender and medical birth complications.
The results substantiated the importance of previous research findings indicating the importance of certain variables in differentiating childrearing attitudes and styles. Suggestions for modifications of the instrument and further research are discussed.

Reed, Lori Patricia. "The relationship between personality type and parenting style". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28270.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study investigated the relationship of personality type and parenting style. Using a sample of convenience, 102 parents (71 female, 31 male) completed three tests: the Myers Briggs Type Indicator which measures personality types, 64 items from the Block Child Rearing Practices Report which measures parental child rearing attitudes and values, and FACES III which measures family functioning. Forty of the 64 items from the Block Child Rearing Practices Report clustered into two homogeneous groups that served as subtests for parenting style. A canonical correlation between four personality type scores (extraversion-introversion, sensing—intuition, thinking—feeling, judging— perceiving) and two parenting style scores (nurturance, restrictiveness) indicated significant relationships between personality and parenting. Parents who were strong on sensing and moderately introverted tended to employ a parenting style that was highly restrictive and moderately nurturant. Parents who were strong on perceiving and moderately extraverted tended to employ a parenting style that was highly nurturing and much less restrictive.

Texto completo
Resumen
Mothers who leave the workforce to raise children may face personal and professional difficulties when returning. There was a lack of qualitative research on what these women experience in their return to work. The purpose of this study was to discover and describe how a mother in a professional or managerial position experiences a return to the workforce after a hiatus of 2 or more years to raise children. The philosophy of Husserl and the methodology of Moustakas guided this transcendental phenomenological study. Through purposive snowball sampling, 12 women participated in semistructured interviews. Data analysis followed the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method leading to a synthesis of participants' lived experiences. Key findings of the essence of the experience were identified in 6 major themes: deciding to return, changing career path, changes in the workplace, feelings upon return, changes at home, and reflections. Social change implications include heightening awareness among women and their families about the process of returning to work after leaving a professional job to care for children. Policymakers may benefit from the information to support mothers' efforts to return to work after a child-rearing hiatus through programs designed to support the reentry of mothers to the professional workplace. Life and career coaches may use findings to prepare women for the reentry process.

Resumen
Nigerian families are overrepresented in child protection interventions in Greater London, drawing attention to cultural differences in childrearing practices. This research investigates the experiences of first-generation Nigerian immigrant parents regarding their management of childrearing issues, which are contextualised within a British child welfare polity and normative cultural milieu. The tension between Nigerian parents' childrearing worldviews and those attributed as ‘British' constitutes the central theme of this thesis. The study employs Bhaskar's (1998) critical realism as an epistemological and methodological paradigm, complemented by the use of Honneth's (1995) recognition theory as the principal substantive framework from which the findings are discussed. Qualitative data were collected from Nigerian parents living in Greater London through an internet blog, semi-structured interviews with 25 individuals, and two focus groups with four participants each. Template analysis was used to code and identify themes within the data. The project gives rise to a series of findings. The first is that most participants in the study wished to uphold certain childrearing practices from their backgrounds. Biographical accounts of their own upbringing in Nigeria revealed a picture of caregiving for children occurring within communal and codependent family relationships, which emphasised expectations of obedience and respectful behaviour from children. Participants' accounts of the physical chastisement of children present this discipline measure as both reasonable and not-so-reasonable. The problematic status of the physical chastisement of children in a British context is the focus of the second key finding of the study. Participants communicated a collective view that Nigerian parents were commonly understood within British society as harsh and controlling, a view attributed to social workers in particular, and other child safeguarding professionals (teachers, child protection police, health professionals) and traditional media producers in general. The defence or disavowal of physical chastisement appears to have become the focus both of immigrant identity practices and the host country's conditions of belonging and inclusion. A third finding was that parents were fearful in their dealings with child safeguarding professionals. Such fears were identified as linked to prior immigration experiences, xenophobia/racism within public discourses and activities, as well as ineffectual social work practices. Participants communicated the view that their values, knowledge, and experiences were not given proper consideration during child safeguarding interactions/interventions and that the challenges posed to the parent-child relationship by immigration were not acknowledged. Social workers and associated professionals were perceived as practicing in ways that could be described as not ‘culturally competent' (Bernard and Gupta, 2008, p.476). Participants experienced social workers as overly prescriptive and threatening. They viewed contact with social services with intense suspicion. A fourth finding was the respect expressed by participants for the British government's efforts to uphold the rights of children. An invitation to participants to share their strategies for managing tensions between Nigerian and British parenting values provided insights to how active/passive influences contribute to everyday strategies of parenting in a context of immigration. Drawing on recognition theory, the thesis offers a way of understanding these findings that recognises and makes sense of the dignity, resilience, fears, and aspirations conveyed by the research participants. The thesis argues for an approach that capitalises on shared values and acknowledges the strengths of Nigerian immigrants' parenting styles while promoting acceptable alternatives to practices that might have attracted child intervention. Recognition theory is offered to social work practice as a starting point for a strengths based approach to integration and wellbeing, suggesting that socio-political participation in the British child welfare polity would lead to an improvement in the confidence and wellbeing of these parents and their children. This conclusion has implications for British social work professionals and other authorities involved in child welfare policy and practice.
