Resumen
Nineteenth Century Literary Society is drawn from archive of the House of John Murray publishing company, held by the National Library of Scotland. The family-run firm, with Scottish roots, spanned seven generations and flourished in London from 1768 until 2002. John Murray is especially remarkable for publishing seminal English-language works of the 19th century, including those by Charles Darwin, David Livingstone, Charles Lyell, and Samuel Smiles, the father of self-help. The largest collection of Lord Byron’s private writings and manuscripts, assembled by the publisher, form a large part of the resource. Women writers feature prominently in the John Murray’s collection, including Jane Austen, Isabella Bird, Elizabeth Eastlake, and Caroline Lamb.

Resumen
By the winter of 1648–9, demands for retributive justice on Charles I and his supporters had built to a crescendo. But regicide was generally regarded as an extremely bad idea, and the king's trial was contrived as a final bid for peaceful settlement, not a prelude to king-killing. In return for a place at the heart of a new constitutional order, Charles I was required to abdicate his negative voice by pleading to charges brought on the sole authority of the House of Commons. This was a high-risk strategy inspired and justified by the weakening of opposition to the trial in the House of Lords, the city of London and at Edinburgh, and by some of the encouraging signals emanating from deep within the royalist camp itself. However, in their anxiety to avoid having their ultimate sanction forced upon them, the commissioners of the high court of justice gave the king rather more opportunities to plead to the charges against him than was consistent with the maintenance of their own authority. Rather than persuading him to give in, they encouraged him to stand firm, with fatal consequences. Far from being a providential act of vengeance, or indeed the inexorable fate of a man predestined to martyrdom, the execution of Charles I was a highly adventitious occurrence – predictable, perhaps, yet contingent on a wide range of unpredictable circumstances.

Resumen
Using Charles Sander Peirce's theory, this study examines the object, representation, and interpretant in the screenplay for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The research methodology employed in this study is qualitative research. Each of the triadic element is composed of three components. An object is denoted by an icon, which is a sign exhibiting a comparable appearance to its reference; an index, which signifies a connection between the representation and the object in terms of presence and occurrences; and a symbol, which is universally acknowledged through mutual agreement. Legisign, a sign in accordance with a general rule or code; qualisign, a sign perceived by quality; and sinsign, a sign based on actual shape or form, are all components of representation. The interpretant possesses rheme, which is a sign predicated on the interpreter's comprehension; dicent sign, which pertains to something that truly exists; argument, which comprises a justification for a given matter. The findings of this analysis indicate that the ring is of the utmost significance in the narrative of the film.

Resumen
Abstract Although Belgium has been a pioneer in dynamics related to the legalisation of euthanasia since the early 2000s, the historical work done on the subject is still very limited. Quite some work has, however, been done on the legal and ethical aspects and implications of euthanasia laws. Questions about societal dynamics in end-of-life issues’ acceptance and debate in the twentieth century in Belgium are to this day unanswered. It is clear, however, that before 1970, no advocacy groups on the matter existed. In this paper, we look at the scope, tone and volume of Belgian newspaper coverage in three events linked to euthanasia, which occurred prior to the emergence of advocacy groups on the subject. The three cases covered are the 1936 bill put forward by Lord Arthur Ponsonby on euthanasia in Great Britain, the 1949 trial of Dr. Herman Sander, the American physician who was charged with the murder of a patient suffering from cancer, and the 1950 release of the film “Meurtres” by Richard Pottier in which famed French actor Fernandel played a man mercy-killing his wife, based on the eponymous book written by Belgian novelist Charles Plisnier in 1943. With this paper, we shed light on the portrayal of euthanasia as a subject and the societal attitude that corresponds to it. The highly pillarised nature of 20th century Belgian newspapers makes this source material highly suited to this endeavour.

Resumen
In January 1556 Charles V renounced his rights to the Iberian kingdoms and passed them on to his son, Philip, who at once assumed the title of King of Spain. To his surprise and consternation, the English council refused to endorse it and pertly reminded him that the Kingdom of Spain did not exist. While the title had long been used, and almost every language had an equivalent for Spain and Spanish, the truth was that legally there was no such entity. Philip II's will reflected this judicial reality. He was, ‘by the grace of God, king of Castile, Leon, Aragon, the Two Sicilies, Jerusalem, Portugal, Navarre, Granada, Toledo, Valencia, Galicia, Mallorca, Seville, Sardinia, Cordoba, Corsica, Murcia, Jaen, Algarve, Gibraltar, the Canary Islands, the Eastern and Western Indies, the islands and terra firma of the Ocean Sea; archduke of Austria; duke of Burgundy, Bravant and Milan; count of Habsburg, Flanders, Tirol, Barcelona; Lord of Biscay, Molina etc.’. This lengthy litany partly explains why he and all his contemporaries habitually resorted to the title King of Spain as convenient short-hand. As we will see, however, there was more to it than simple utility. The terms were used because they were broadly understood and accepted. But it will be apparent at once that the concept of a specific Spanish identity in the sixteenth century is likely to be particularly problematic since Spain did not exist.

Resumen
The paper deals with the semantic transformation of the Old Czech term “pravda” (meaning “truth” or “justice” in different contexts) in the political and legal socioleсt of the Bohemian nobility from the end of the 14th till the end of the 15th century. This term was used in the charter issued by the Bohemian lords on the 5th of May, 1394 in such a way that it received a meaning of “straightness” denoting a legal reference point set in the past once and forever which does not allow any deviations. The lords declared their will “to put straight the Bohemian land and to bring it to the law and to the truth—in such a way as it stood firm in truth in the times of our forefathers.” The Land constitutions (Zemské zřízení) of the year 1395 written by the lords appeal to an unnamed “ancient constitution” and reproduce some laws from the “Statutes of the Kingdom” issued by Charles IV in 1355. However, in some other cases the Land Tables are inconsistent with the written law as they express their authors’ own notion concerning the social justice. An explanation could be found in the treatise “Land’s laws” by Ondřej of Dubá written around the turn of the 15th century: Here the term “pravda” means an opinion of a litigating person who considers himself to be right. The Hussites of the 15th century used the term as a motto, however, they meant the “God’s truth” (Old Czech: “pravda Boží”) and not the human one. In 1421 the diety of Čáslav issued a decree obliging everybody to confess the Four Prague Articles as “the truths of God”. Due to the absolutization of the term the Hussite legists of the second half of the 15th century Ctibor, of Cimburk and Viktorín of Všehrdy considered the “pravda” to be an impersonal, objectively given reality, i. e. the verity.

Resumen
AbstractSix tapestries depict the resistance of Zeeland's Sea Beggars to the Spaniards during the Eighty Years' War. Between 1572 and 1576 the fight for freedom was waged in the Scheldt delta. In 1591 the Estates of Zeeland ordered the first tapestry, a representation of the battle of Bergen op Zoom, from Francois Spierinx, a weaver in Delft. When it arrived in 1595, the Estates decided to have a series of tapestries made for the Prinsenlogement, or royal apartments, in Middelburg Abbey. The five tapestries were woven in the De Maecht workshop in less than ten years. Four of them, representing naval engagements, were designed by Hendrick Cornelisz. Vroom: The Battle of Rammekens, The Battle of Lillo, The Battle of Zierikzee and The Battle of Den Haak. The fifth, the Arms Tapestry, was woven after a design by Carel van Mander. Lord Charles Howard of Effingham, Earl of Nottingham (1536-1624) ordered from Spierinx a series of ten tapestries depicting the English victory over the Spanish Armada. These tapestries, which had hung in the House of Lords since 1650, were destroyed in a fire at the Houses of Parliament in 1834. Vroom based his designs for the Armada tapestries on maps by Robert Adams, engraved by Augustine Ryther. Compared with the Armada series, the composition of the Zeeland tapestries is fluent and vigorous. Vroom had actually visited Zeeland and spoken with eye-witnesses such as Joos dc Moor. The silhouettes of the towns are rendered in detail. Lord Thomas Howard ordered The Last Fight of the Revenge, dated 1598, from the De Maecht workshop in Middelburg. This fairly unknown tapestry, in a private collection since 1934, was on show at the Armada exhibition in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich in 1988. It was erroneously presumed to have been woven by Spierinx in Brussels. Spierinx, however, came from Antwerp, and moved to Delft in 1591. In view of the dating and an art-historical comparison, an attribution to the Dc Maccht workshop is more likely. Hendrick Vroom designed The Revenge. It bears a marked resemblance to the Zierikzee and Den Haak tapestries in the Zeeland series; the border, too, is similar. Wool, silk, gold and silver thread were used. The latter were costly materials and rarely used in North Netherlandish tapestry production. The tapestry may have been ordered to commemorate Sir Richard Grenville's valiant action. On August 31 1591 Admiral Howard led his fleet to the Azores, off Pico island. His intention was to intercept a Spanish treasure fleet on its return voyage from the West. However, the English were taken by surprise by Armada ships. Howard ordered the retreat, but Grenville, vice-admiral and commander of the Revenge, ignored these orders. He engaged in battle with the attackers, was wounded and died on the Spanish flagship. The composition, a bird's-eye view, of the Revenge tapestry, bears a strong resemblance to the Zierikzee (1599-1603) and Den Haak (1600-1602) tapestries, both of which were woven under the supervision of Hendrick de Maecht, Jan de Maecht's successor. The borders of the tapestries woven in Middelburg echo Spierinx's Bergen op Zoom. The colours in the Bergen op Zoom tapestry are bright and soft, the figures are plastic and the surround merges harmoniously with the representation. Unfortunately this cannot be said of the Zeeland borders. Various alterations in the border of the Revenge mar the harmony and symmetry. The word 'Anno' and the year in the top corners are in the wrong order. In view of the woven rendering of the composition, the use of dark colours and the rather clumsy borders, The Last Fight of The Revenge is more likely to have come from Hendrick de Maecht's studio than from Jan de Maecht's. The latter's products are distinguished by the use of lighter colours and more accurate weaving, as is particularly evident in De Battle of Rammekens and to a lesser extent in The Battle of Lillo.

Resumen
The main goal of this dissertation is to examine the county of Cambridgeshire using the Lord Lieutenancy and its control of both militia affairs and its function as the key instrument of royal policy within the shire. In addition, it will examine the Lord Lieutenant, Theophilus Howard, 2nd earl of Suffolk, and his deputy lieutenants who formed the foundation of a ruling elite for Caroline Cambridgeshire. It was this ruling elite which was able to hold down faction and turmoil within the shire and perform the myriad of divisive and constitutionally objectionable tasks handed down from the crown, such as collection of the forced loan and the expansion of ship money into inland counties. Through this examination, the findings are that the Lord Lieutenant had almost no real contact with the shire he was in charge of, leaving the year-to-year running of militia and local government to his deputy lieutenants. It was the deputy lieutenants with their long family history of residency and office holdings within the shire, that formed a core of officials who were able to use their position within the Lieutenancy to shield the shire from distasteful crown policies while still being able to supply Charles with men and money on time and in full when other shires in England were falling into chaos and riots. However, this influence could only withstand so much, and in the end, Charles's reliance on his Personal Rule and fiscal innovations made these tasks impossible to perform and forced the institution into collapse.

History
M.A.
Many historians of the American Revolution fail to accurately assess the impact British supporters in the Thirteen Colonies had on the military dimension of the war. The Crown's American allies, commonly referred to as Loyalists, were instrumental in British operations throughout the conflict, especially in the southern colonies. Reports from the royal governors of the southern colonies numbered the Loyalists in the thousands. British officials in London developed a plan to Americanize the war by utilizing Loyalists more comprehensively, lessening the burden for more British troops. The first steps toward Americanizing the war occurred when General Sir Henry Clinton and Lieutenant General Charles, Second Earl, Cornwallis incorporated southern Loyalists with their British troops to reconquer the southern colonies in 1780. After the British conquest of Charleston, South Carolina in June 1780, Lieutenant General Cornwallis was awarded the independent command of the British forces in the South and was additionally charged with rallying and protecting the Loyalists in North and South Carolina. Cornwallis consistently tried to organize the Loyalists into militia corps to combat Rebel partisans operating in the Carolina backcountry, The constant failure of the Loyalist militia persuaded Cornwallis of their inability to sustain themselves. As a result, Cornwallis abandoned the southern colonies, as well as the Crown's loyal subjects, in favor of offensive operations in Virginia. His aim was to prevent the Rebel southern army from receiving supplies and recruits. Many slaves joined Cornwallis' army in Virginia and persuaded him to utilize them to replace the services provided by southern white Loyalists. These failed decisions contributed to Cornwallis' humiliating defeat at Yorktown in October 1781, effectively ending the military dimension of the American Revolution.

Resumen
This dissertation explores the significance of law and religion to the Scottish Revolution through the career of Archibald Johnston of Wariston. As a lawyer committed to the defense of Scottish Presbyterianism against the Anglicanism of Charles I, Wariston epitomized the legal and religious objectives of the Revolution. While his importance to the Revolution is marked in the historiography, Wariston has received little specialized study. This work draws on manuscript collections from Edinburgh University Library, the National Archives of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland to reconstruct his vision of the Scottish constitution. As the most intimate source of his religious life, his diary is explored in a social and political context to construct a composite view of his private piety and his public policy.
Wariston joined visceral opposition to innovations in religious worship imposed by Charles I. He rose in prominence because his legal expertise was indispensable to a Revolution predicated on a constitutional challenge of the authority of the Crown. The Revolution was a nationalist revolt against an alleged English imperialism. Wariston's religious experience in the Revolution revealed that the Church was the touchstone for a revival of national consciousness of Scottish laws, courts, customs and history. Wariston participated in the rediscovery and reinterpretation of Scottish law to undo decades of Anglicized Crown reform in Church and State.
When war began in 1639 Wariston became central to intelligence gathering and the forging of a loose alliance with English opponents of Charles I. This intelligence network informed Scottish propaganda to England and proved decisive in turning English popular opinion against the King. In 1640 Charles was forced to abandon war and enter into the negotiations which led to the London Treaty of 1641. Wariston pursued two main objectives---Scottish independence and permanent institutions of Anglo-Scottish cooperation---to ensure Scottish influence in English policy. While the latter initiatives were deferred in the Treaty, the Revolution achieved independence and the preservation of Scottish Presbyterianism. This study finds that ideas of religion and law in the Revolution were shaped by the overarching imperative of independence and a renewed Scottish nationalism.

The goal of this work is to develop a new SMTB-Q potential in order to study the early stages of the oxidation of aluminium by molecular dynamics (MD).Our potential is able to model different alumina polymorphs as well as transitions from the amorphous state to a crystalline phase. Our approach couples a covalent term with the charge. It uses Rapp_ and Goddard scheme for the electrostatic part and the model of alternating network developed by C. Noguera for the covalent part. The SMTB-Q potential was validated with a Monte Carlo approach. This study shows that the potential SMTB-Q gives satisfactory results for the Al-O bonding in different atomic configurations. The bonding results from the competition between three energy contributions: electrostatic, covalent and Pauli repulsion between the oxygens. After implementation in the LAMMPS software, the potential SMTB-Q is used to study by DM constant stoichiometry oxides. Alumina phase transitions are observed under high pressure and temperature. We also introduce the metallic bonding in the potential. The superposition of the iono-covalent and metallic bonds was investigated for metal / oxide systems. Finally, we discuss the formalism of the SMTB-Q potential to take into account the change of stoichiometry in the oxide

Resumen
This thesis represents an important investigation into the much-neglected period of exile endured by many Royalists as a consequence of the violence and alienation of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms (1639-1651).Drawing from extensive archival research conducted in Britain, Ireland and Europe, this study expands upon existing literature on royalism, British and Irish interaction with Continental Europe and seventeenth-century mentalities more generally in order to illumine the unique issues faced by these exiles. Central to this study are the roles and experiences of the Irish element within Charles II’s exiled court. Recent studies focussed upon the place of Ireland within Europe and the North Atlantic are employed to assess such issues as confessional division, court culture, the impact of memory and the influence of conflicting European ideas upon the survival of the exiles and the course of the restoration cause. A thematic, rather than chronological structure is employed in order to develop these interpretations, allowing for an approach which emphasizes the place of individuals in relation to broader Royalist mentalities. Dominant figures include Murrough O’Brien, Lord Inchiquin (c. 1614-1674), Theobald, Lord Taaffe (d. 1677), John Bramhall (1594-1663), Church of Ireland bishop of Derry, Daniel O’Neill (c. 1612-1664), Father Peter Talbot (SJ) (c. 1618/20 – 1680) and James Butler, marquis of Ormond (1610-1688). Through investigation of Irish strands of royalism and the wider issues in which they were set in the course of civil war and exile, this thesis makes a powerful argument for the need to consider seventeenth-century ideas of allegiance and identity not only within a ‘Three Kingdoms’ approach, but Europe more generally. It also makes a compelling case for the centrality of Irish Royalists in the formation and implementation of policy during the exile period through their familiarity with and access to European centres of power and influence.

In this thesis I present new insights into aspects of Peter Guthrie Tait's life and work, derived principally from largely-unexplored primary source material: Tait's scrapbook, the Tait–Maxwell school-book and Tait's pocket notebook. By way of associated historical insights, I also come to discuss the innovative and far-reaching mathematics of the elusive Frenchman, C.-V. Mourey. P. G. Tait (1831–1901) F.R.S.E., Professor of Mathematics at the Queen's College, Belfast (1854–1860) and of Natural Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh (1860–1901), was one of the leading physicists and mathematicians in Europe in the nineteenth century. His expertise encompassed the breadth of physical science and mathematics. However, since the nineteenth century he has been unfortunately overlooked—overshadowed, perhaps, by the brilliance of his personal friends, James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879), Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805–1865) and William Thomson (1824–1907), later Lord Kelvin. Here I present the results of extensive research into the Tait family history. I explore the spiritual aspect of Tait's life in connection with The Unseen Universe (1875) which Tait co-authored with Balfour Stewart (1828–1887). I also reveal Tait's surprising involvement in statistics and give an account of his introduction to complex numbers, as a schoolboy at the Edinburgh Academy. A highlight of the thesis is a re-evaluation of C.-V. Mourey's 1828 work, La Vraie Théorie des quantités négatives et des quantités prétendues imaginaires, which I consider from the perspective of algebraic reform. The thesis also contains: (i) a transcription of an unpublished paper by Hamilton on the fundamental theorem of algebra which was inspired by Mourey and (ii) new biographical information on Mourey.

Resumen
This chapter describes the growing factionalism among the Spaniards in Peru, as well as the collapse of Pizarro’s alliance with Manco Inca. In the face of Spanish brutality, Manco organized a widespread war of reconquest, which failed because the Spanish alliances with other Andean lords held firm, including those with Inca noblewomen and the prince Paullu Inca. When the threat of Inca war lessened, the Spaniards turned to fight one another, leading to a series of battles and assassinations that divided the conquistadores and devastated Andean populations. Charles V attempted to rein in the leading factions, but his inspector, Cristóbal Vaca de Castro, declared himself the new governor of Peru, a claim he reinforced on the battlefield.

This chapter discusses Bruce White's twenty-year imprisonment. Bruce still managed to find ways to get high despite jumping in between prisons: the old jail in Hagerstown, Eastern Correctional Institution, Maryland House of Correction, and Western Correctional in Cumberland. At the House of Correction in Jessup, Bruce's identity only stalled at being a junkie and the inmates dubbed him as Frank White after Christopher Walken's drug lord character in the 1990 gangster film King of New York. As Bruce shifted through varying prisons, Fat Donald Echert and his father Charles Wood White Sr died. The chapter also mentions Bruce's disassociation from the world when the World Trade Center came down while he snorted heroin in prison.

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">An online report mentions that a conventional ICE vehicle in its lifetime of 12 years or 150000 km will emit 40 tons of CO2e. With tightening of the norms and countries setting emission targets, nowadays vehicle manufacturers are bringing out many new models of electric vehicles. The sale of EV vehicles are not without challenges. The electric vehicles traditionally require an e-motor for motive force, that are powered largely by Li-batteries located in a battery box. The batteries discharge when vehicles are running and get charged through the grid normally. When batteries charge and discharge, heat is dissipated. Generation of heat is a concern, since it reduces the life of a battery with life of battery depending on number of charge /discharge cycles. In an ideal condition a Battery Management System (BMS) ensures that the batteries are charged / discharged at optimal dissipated thermal load. However due to various random events like cell breakdown, mechanical damage to batteries, etc., the batteries could emit uncontrolled heat - which leads to a situation called “Thermal Runaways”. This thermal runaway may lead to fire, battery damage and in the worst case, a whole vehicle could get destroyed. So, it’s imperative to control the thermal run-away situation, by containing the fire within battery box and avoid fire propagation that could destroy whole vehicle. Such a method could limit the damage only to the Li-Ion battery box (in current configuration) and the vehicle itself could be saved and in some cases, precious human lives. There are many methods to deal with this event (ref . point b, point c). In this paper, we discuss one such method that could be a potential life/equipment saver.</div></div>

Resumen
This article is a reflection based on the review of the book “La invention de la Naturaleza: El nuevo mundo de Alexander Von Humboldt'' by Andrea Wulf. The text shows that Humboldt was the first scientist to develop a new vision of the world and that his publication “El ensayo sobre la geografía de las plantas” was the first ecologist book. In 1800 he was the first scientist to mention human-caused climate change and that it could have unforeseeable consequences for future generations. His important influence on the greatest thinkers, artists and scientists of the time, such as: Thomas Jefferson, Charles Darwin, Henry David Thoreau, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, among others, shows the need to know the path of the scientist in the 19th century and reflect on the lack of interest, knowledge and firm sustainability actions in the 20th and 21st centuries in which the media shows year after year the action of nature through rains, landslides causing “destruction”. As a result, the article points out the errors in society's perception of the effects of human beings on the environment.

Resumen
Direct fuel injection has become necessary in two-stroke S.I. engines, since it prevents one of the major problems of these engines, that is fuel loss from the exhaust port. Another important problem is combustion irregularity at light loads, due to excessive residual gas in the charge, and can be solved by charge stratification. High-pressure liquid fuel injection is able to control the mixing process inside the cylinder for getting either stratified charge at partial loads or quasi-stoichiometric conditions, as it is required at full load. The feasibility of this solution for a small engine for light motorcycles has been studied using CFD tools. An exhaustive investigation carried out by the KIVA3v code allowed to design a 50 cm3 engine prototype with a satisfactory behaviour even at light loads in unthrottled condition, as proved by good fuel economy and engine stability in dynamometric bench tests. Exhaust gas analysis and indicated pressure behaviour confirm stratification and combustion correctness. For the final part of the research the adoption of the AVL-Fire code has been considered: the possibility to take into account any combustion chamber and transfer duct geometric details and the accuracy of spray breakup and wall film models allow to better understand the engine behaviour throughout the operating range, obtaining useful information in order to efficiently shorten the experimental time required for the EU map-setting.

Resumen
Abstract Contoured bearing surfaces forming continuous surface pockets in slider bearings increase the load carrying capacity considerably. Article investigates the effect of two dimensionally contoured surfaces of a few sample shapes on the performance characteristics of hydrodynamic slider bearings. Exponential and trigonometric film shapes are considered. Computer-aided numerical finite difference solution of the two-dimensional Reynolds equation is used via a self mesh generating computer program, which also generates optimum design data including dimensionless load-, flow-, temperature rise-, power loss-, stiffness-, damping, and friction coefficients. Optimum bearings are defined as the maximum load capacity bearings. Optimum design charts are given, where dimensional ratios and powers of exponents are optimized. Lubricant is incompressible with temperature dependent viscosity. The effect of temperature is considered by maintaining energy balance via iterative thermal loop. In comparison to optimum one-dimensional tapered film bearings gains of over 200% in the load capacities of contoured narrow bearings are observed.

Resumen
Lead Zirconate Titanate (PbZrxTi1−xO3 or PZT) is a piezoelectric material widely used as sensors and actuators. For microactuators, PZT often appears in the form of thin films to maintain proper aspect ratios. One major challenge encountered is accurate measurement of piezoelectric coefficients of PZT thin films. In this paper, we present a simple, low-cost, and effective method to measure piezoelectric coefficient d33 of PZT thin films through use of basic principles in mechanics of vibration. We use a small impact hammer with a tiny tip to generate an impulsive force acting perpendicularly to the surface of a PZT film. In the meantime, we measure the impulsive force via a load cell and the responding charge of the PZT thin film via a charge amplifier. Then the piezoelectric coefficient d33 is obtained from the measured force and charge based on piezoelectricity and a finite element modeling. We also conduct a thorough parametric study to understand the sensitivity of this method on various parameters, such as substrate material, boundary conditions, specimen size, specimen thickness, thickness ratio, and PZT thin-film material. To demonstrate the feasibility, we calibrate the new method via a PZT thick film disk resonator with a known d33. Experimental results show that d33 measured via this method is as accurate as those from the manufacturer’s specifications within its tolerance. We then apply the new method to PZT thin films deposited on silicon substrate, and successfully measure the corresponding piezoelectric coefficient d33.

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Fuel film deposits on combustion chamber walls are understood to be the main source of particle emissions in GDI engines under homogenous charge operation. More precisely, the liquid film that remains on the injector tip after the end of injection is a fuel rich zone that undergoes pyrolysis reactions leading to the formation of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) known to be the precursors of soot. The physical phenomena accompanying the fuel film deposit, evaporation, and the chemical reactions associated to the injector film are not yet fully understood and require high fidelity CFD simulations and controlled experimental campaigns in optically accessible engines. To this end, a simplified model based on physical principles is developed in this work, which couples an analytical model for liquid film formation and evaporation on the injector tip with a stochastic particle dynamics model for particle formation. The modeling framework is applicable under steady-state engine operating conditions, and can be extended to transient driving cycle simulations, although the former is only presented in this work. Particle number, mass, and size distributions are validated with experimental measurements performed on a steady-state engine test bench for a 2.0L turbocharged gasoline engine under two engine speeds at part and full load. The model is able to qualitatively capture the main trends in particle number concentration values, especially at the higher load conditions. An underestimation of PN and PM at lower loads is observed, which can be attributed to other sources of particle formation.</div></div>

Resumen
Multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) based nanocomposite fibers were fabricated using electrospinning method, and their electrical properties were investigated under various loads and temperatures. MWCNTs were initially dispersed into polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and electrospun at various spinning conditions, including DC voltage, pump speed, concentration and distance. When the mechanical load was applied to a film of PVP nanocomposite fibers, the contact resistance, separation between sites and jumping distance of the charge carriers were gradually reduced, thus likely enhancing the electrical conduction. Additionally, as the temperature increased from 20 to 90 °C, the electrical resistance drastically decreased. These behaviors may be a consequence of conductivity and polarization effects of the nanoscale inclusions in the fibers.

Resumen
The gasoline HCCI engine holds a promise of achieving very high part-load efficiency combined with extremely low NOx and soot emissions. However, the load range of HCCI operation is limited by the misfire limit at the low end, and knock limit at the high end. Therefore, the future practical implementation will likely be a dual-mode engine, operating in the HCCI mode at part load and switching to SI at higher loads. Expanding the limits will be critical for maximizing the fuel economy benefits in the vehicle. The mixture stratification, both thermal and compositional, can have very tangible impact on HCCI combustion; and gaining a deeper insight into these effects is critical for expanding the HCCI range of operation. This paper presents results of the comprehensive experimental investigation of the mixture preparation effects on a single-cylinder gasoline engine with exhaust re-induction. The effects include type of mixture preparation (external mixing vs. direct injection), charge motion, and injection timing. A combination of pressure-based combustion diagnostics, emissions analysis, and heat flux measurements on the combustion chamber wall quantifies the effects on combustion and provides insight into reasons for observed engine behavior. As an example, the instantaneous temperature and heat flux measurements show the fuel impingement locations and allow assessing the fuel film dynamics and their effect on mixture stratification. The effects of direct injection and partial closing of the swirl control valve were relatively small compared to extending the injection timing late into the intake process or completely closing the swirl control valve and allowing charge storage in the port.

Resumen
Roller ball bearings are the most common and one of the most important components in rotating machinery. Bearings, in general produce vibrations which can be harvested to produce energy and analysis of these vibrations can also be used to determine the condition of ball bearing. In this paper we discuss how to use the bearings for energy harvesting and conditioning monitoring in machines. A sleeve, padded with piezoelectric material, is designed to solve the dual purpose. Piezo electric materials have the ability to generate an electric field or electric potential in response to applied mechanical strain. Tests are conducted on the good and defective bearings to study the effectiveness of the sleeve. Phase fluctuation based processors are found to be effective in ball bearing condition monitoring. For condition monitoring the signature responses for a given time period are studied. At a constant speed of increase in load leads to an increase in voltage generated. For a single non-coated piezo film, voltage varies from 383 mV at 80 lbf to 683 mV at 320 lbf at 40Hz. With the increased stacking of non-coated piezo films at 320 lbf, voltage generated shows an increase of 23 %. Nano-coating mixture (Ferrofluid and Zinc oxide nanoparticles) causes an additional piezoelectric effect on the surface of piezo film as ZnO acts as an additional source of electrons, due to its ability to emit charges at room temperature. The single piezo film configuration at 320 lbf generates a voltage of 663 mV while the voltage increases 2.1 times for a single nano-coated piezo film. Introduction of defects causes increases in the contact stress at the asperities leading to an increase in the vibrations and forces. Also, an increase in vibration and force, leads to an increase in the voltage generated. For a single piezo film configuration, in a normal bearing, the voltage generated is 663 mV while a defective bearing gives a voltage of 698 mV.

Resumen
Piezoelectric materials have many applications including sensors, actuators, and motors. However, the ability of piezoelectric films to generate electricity from wind power has only recently been advanced. Piezoelectric films harvest wind energy by means of a layer of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) that upon deformation generates an internal electrical voltage across two silver-ink electrodes. These films are allowed to freely flap in an airflow to cause deformation and thus electricity generation. A single small film (4.14 cm (1.63 in) × 1.63 cm (0.64 in) × 0.15 cm (0.06 in)) is tested at various wind speeds. The output of the film may be enhanced with the addition of a bluff body (in this case, a cylinder) upstream from the film. The vortex shedding from the cylinder produces a wake that can enhance the vibrations of the piezoelectric device, which in turn optimize voltage and/or power output. Voltage and power output is recorded across varying load resistances. The method of storing useful energy from the piezoelectric films is also of particular interest. Preliminary experiments using a LTC3588-1 energy harvester to various configurations of supercapacitors and Li-ion batteries are conducted. The LTC3588-1 is comprised of an efficient rectifier with a buck converter to allow the chip to efficiently charge the super capacitor while only requiring a small input to begin charging.
