Magister Scientiae Dentium - MSc(Dent)<br>The Tip-Edge and edgewise techniques are the main techniques that are mostly used in orthodontics, and are applicable to the treatment of any type of malocclusion from the most simple to the most complex. The edgewise bracket wire combination produces bodily tooth movement simultaneously or separately in all three planes of space and hence permits correction of the most extreme tooth malpositions. On the other hand Tip-Edge offers a differential tooth movement (just like the previously used Begg technique) within an edgewise based bracket
system (Parkhouse 2003). When treating patients using the Tip-Edge technique, it is recommended that a specialized archwire i.e. Australian stainless steel wire be used. This wire can be described as a round austenitic stainless steel wire that is heat-treated and cold-drawn to its proper diameter. This was done in order to produce its special and needed properties such as toughness, resiliency and tensile strength (Kesling, 1985). It is used in conjunction with light (2oz) class II elastics. The aim of this study was to compare cephalometric changes in skeletal and dento-alveolar parameters in cases treated by these two different orthodontic techniques. This was to be established by calculating and comparing the pre- and post-treatment cephalometric variables of cases treated with these techniques by looking at the skeletal and dento-alveolar measurements. Thirty Tip-Edge and thirty edgewise treated cases that had class II malocclusion, had extraction of four premolars and were treated with Class II elastics were selected. The gender distribution between the Tip-Edge and the edgewise techniques were 47% and 60% respectively for females. For males it was 53% in Tip-Edge and 40% in the edgewise techniques.

The lateral cephalometric radiograph (LCR) is an important tool in orthodontics to aid diagnosis, inform treatment planning and to evaluate treatment outcomes. Following identification of frequently used cephalometric analyses in the literature, the aims of this thesis were: (i) to establish cephalometric norm values for 12-year-old southern Chinese children for the modified Björk’s analysis, Jacobson’s Wits appraisal, Pancherz’s Sagittal Occlusal (SO) and Vertical Occlusal (VO) analyses (Paper I and II); (ii) to identify gender and racial/ethnic variations in cephalometric norm values (Paper I and II); (iii) to extrapolate from the cephalometric norm values of 12-year-old southern Chinese to produce norm values for 10, 11, 13 and 14-year-old - for these common aforementioned cephalometric analyses and McNamara’s analysis (Paper III); (iv) to investigate variations in the cephalometric characteristics of southern and northern Chinese children (Paper IV); and (v) to study the relationship between common cephalometric reference planes and the True Horizontal Plane (THP), and variations with respect to gender (Paper V).
Extant LCRs from a community based sample of 200 male and 205 female 12-year-old southern Chinese in Hong Kong; 86 Caucasian children and 100 northern Chinese children, were traced and digitized twice employing the Computer Assisted Simulated for Orthognathic Surgery (CASSOS) program. Cephalometric norm values were created and extrapolated for 10 to 14-year-old. Gender and racial/ethnic variations were determined. In addition, the relationship between some common cephalometric reference planes (Sella Nasion Plane - SNP; Constructed Horizontal Plane - CHP; Frankfurt Horizontal Plane - FHP; Upper Occlusal Plane - UOP; Functional Occlusal Plane - FOP) and the THP was determined; and gender differences examined.
Cephalometric norm values for modified Björk’s analysis, Jacobson’s Wits appraisal and Pancherz’s SO & VO analyses were produced for 12-year-old southern Chinese children. Variations in cephalometric norm values with respect to gender (P<0.05) and race/ethnicity (P<0.05) were observed. Extrapolated cephalometric norm values for modified Björk’s analysis, Jacobson’s Wits appraisal, Pancherz’s SO & VO analyses, and McNamara’s analysis were produced for 10 to 14-year-old. Variations in cephalometric norm values with respect to age (P<0.05), gender (P<0.05) and race/ethnicity (P<0.05) were observed. Furthermore, variations in cephalometric values between southern and northern Chinese children were evident (P<0.05), and between Caucasians and both Chinese groups (P<0.05). The mean inclination between THP and the conventional cephalometric planes differed significantly from zero: SNP/THP (P<0.05), UOP/THP (P<0.05), FOP/THP (P<0.05); and gender differences were apparent (P<0.05).
In conclusion, norm values for frequently used cephalometric analyses were produced for 12-year-old southern Chinese, and extrapolated to produce norm values for 10 to 14-year-old. Age, gender and racial/ ethnic differences were apparent, supporting the need for age, gender and racial/ethnic specific norms. Os objetivos deste estudo foram: 1- avaliar a influência dos fatores energéticos e da posição de cabeça, no sentido vertical e horizontal, na qualidade das radiografias cefalométricas e na interpretação dos resultados para diagnóstico e plano de tratamento; 2- verificar as implicações oriundas da determinação de pontos cefalométricos equivocados pela falha no controle de qualidade nas radiografias cefalométricas. Telerradiografias em norma lateral, padronizadas em condições reprodutíveis, foram realizadas em um crânio seco e em um fantoma. Realizou-se simulações de falhas técnicas relacionadas a quilovoltagem, miliamperagem, tempo de exposição e posição do filtro de alumínio, e a modificações horizontais e verticais de 3º, 6º, e 9º do fantoma em relação ao plano sagital mediano e ao plano de Frankfurt, respectivamente. Vinte e seis radiografias cefalométricas foram selecionadas e encaminhadas para seis examinadores (3 ortodontistas e 3 radiologistas), para executarem manualmente a análise cefalométrica de McNamara. ANOVA comparou as medidas de onze variáveis nas 26 análises cefalométricas. Quando ocorreu diferença, aplicou-se o teste de comparações múltiplas de Games-Howell (variâncias heterogêneas) e o de Tukey HSD (variâncias homogêneas), ao nível de probabilidade 5%. Não houve diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre os seis examinadores e entre as onze variáveis estudadas (p > 0,05). Observou-se pouca influência dos fatores energéticos na qualidade das imagens e reprodutibilidade dos pontos cefalométricos estudados. As variações horizontais da posição da cabeça em relação ao plano sagital mediano apresentaram discrepâncias significativas na qualidade da imagem radiográfica para cefalometria. Pontos cefalométricos inadequados comprometeram o diagnóstico, mesmo com examinadores experientes. A interpretação das cefalometrias precisa estar associada com aspectos clínicos, fotografias, modelos gnatostáticos e outras radiografias, para estabelecer o diagnóstico e plano de tratamento.<br>The aims of this study were to evaluate the influence of energetic factors and head position on the quality of cephalometric radiographs and on their interpretation, and to analyze the consequences of incorrect landmark identification due to errors in quality control in cephalometric radiographs. Standardized lateral cephalographs of a dry skull and a phantom were taken. There were made simulations of technical errors related to kilovoltage, milliampereage, exposition time and position of Al filter, and to horizontal and vertical changes of 3°, 6° and 9° of the phantom in relation to sagital plane and Frankfurt plane, respectively. Twenty-six cephalometric radiographs were selected and 6 examiners (3 orthodontists and 3 radiologists) performed the manual cephalometric analyses of McNamara. ANOVA compared the measurements of 11 variables in the 26 cephalometric analyses. Significant statistically differences were not found among the 6 examiners and among the 11 variables (p > 0.05). Energetic factors had low influence in the quality of the images and on the reproducibility of the cephalometric landmarks. Horizontal variations of head position in relation to sagital plane influenced the quality of cephalometric radiographs. Incorrect cephalometric landmarks compromised the diagnosis, even with experienced examiners. Cephalometry should be complimented by clinical examination, photographs, gnathostatics models and others radiographs to establish diagnosis and treatment.

Cranial base flexion has been used extensively as a baseline or standard from which to interpret differences in craniofacial growth and morphology. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 414 adults representing seven samples from around the world were compared for variation in cranial base and facial morphology. The samples represent Australian Aboriginal, New Zealand Maori ( Polynesian ), Thai, Chinese, white American, African Sotho / Xhosa / Zulu and African Khoi / San populations. Seven angles of cranial base flexion, five craniofacial angles and nine cranial base and facial dimensions were measured on tracings of lateral cephalometric radiographs. Numerous significant correlations were found between cranial base flexion angles, craniofacial angles and dimensions of the cranial base and craniofacial skeleton. A positive correlation was found between the orientation of the foramen magnum, clivus and the anterior cranial base, with a negative correlation between these angles and the orientation of the hard palate. There was also a parallel relationship between the orientation of the foramen magnum and the anterior cranial base ( measured from pituitary point to nasion ). Cranial base flexion, craniofacial angles and dimensions differed significantly between some samples. Despite this, there was no evidence of distinct facial types between samples. Multivariate statistics revealed some discrimination between some samples for dimensions ; however, if angles were used alone, less than 50 % of individuals could be correctly assigned to their sample of origin. Most of the variation could be attributed to variation between individuals, rather than variation between samples. The range of variation in cranial base flexion is considerable, and needs to be taken into account when comparing samples. Flexion of the cranial base is generally insufficient to distinguish people from different geographic samples. The functional and evolutionary significance of the relationship between the orientation of the foramen magnum and cranial base flexion is discussed for its potential usefulness as a reference line for interpreting craniofacial morphology.<br>Thesis (Ph.D.)--Medical School and Dental School, 2005.

Foram selecionadas telerradiografias em norma de 45 graus de 25 indivíduos, com faixa etária entre 12 e 17 anos, apresentando maloclusões de Classe I e Classe II de Angle. Todos os indivíduos possuíam radiografias oblíquas iniciais e finais dos lados direito e esquerdo tomadas em um mesmo aparelho de raios X, com um intervalo de 8 a 16 meses. O principal critério de inclusão era a presença de implantes metálicos em todas as telerradiografias , para sobreposições dos traçados cefalométricos. Após estudos em crânio seco e inspeção visual foi sugerido um cefalograma para a maxila constituído das seguintes estruturas anatômicas: contorno da órbita, uma linha da base do crânio, a região do processo zigomático, limites de seio maxilar, a maxila, o processo zigomático da maxila do lado oposto, o osso zigomático do lado oposto e a órbita do lado oposto. Os pontos cefalométricos sugeridos para servir de parâmetro na sobreposição parcial da maxila, em telerradiografias em norma de 45 graus, foram divididos de acordo com o sentido analisado. No sentido vertical os pontos mais estáveis foram: OS, PZI, ENP e PZMO. No sentido horizontal os pontos sugeridos foram: PZP, PZPI, PZI, ENA e A. As alterações anatômicas ocorridas em todos os pontos cefalométricos do lado esquerdo foram iguais as do lado direito, não havendo diferença entre os lados da tomada radiográfica para telerradiografias em norma de 45 graus.<br>A longitudinal and retrospective cephalometric study was developed in order to establish a maxillary cephalogram, to identify stable cephalometric landmarks on 45° radiographs, as well as to evaluate if the obtained images from one side are compatible with the ones from the other side. Forty-five degrees cephalometric radiographs of 25 persons, aged between 12 and 17 years, presenting Angle malocclusion: Class I and Class II were selected. All the persons had pre and post right and left oblique radiographs obtained from the same X ray device, with an interval of eight to sixteen months. The primary inclusion criterion was the presence of metallic implants in all radiographs, to obtain the cephalometric tracings superimpositions. After studies in dried skulls and visual inspection, a maxillary cephalogram was suggested using the following anatomical structures: the orbital contour, a cranial base line, the zigomatic process area, maxillary sinus boundaries, the maxilla; the maxillary zygomatic process, zigomatic bone and orbit of the counter side. The cephalometric landmarks suggested to work parameter for maxillary superimposition in 45º cephalometric radiographs were separated in accordance with the evaluated plane. It can be suggested the use of OS, PZI, PNS and PZMO on vertical planes and PZP, PZPI, PZI, ANS and A on horizontal plane considered the points more stable and reproducible in the sample. The anatomical changes observed in all the cephalometric points of the left side were equivalent to the ones of the right side, with no differences between the sides on 45º cephalometric radiographs.

Material e Métodos: Foram selecionados 20 pacientes com deformidade dento-facial de classe II, com deficiência maxilomandibular que foram submetidos à cirurgia de avanço maxilo-mandibular. Os pacientes tiveram um período pós-operatório de no mínimo 6 meses. Foram realizadas tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico nos períodos pré-operatório (T1), pósoperatório imediato, até quinze dias após a cirurgia (T2) e pós-operatório tardio, pelo menos 6 meses após a cirurgia (T3). Foi realizada a quantificação linear, de área e de volume das vias aéreas superiores posteriores, e comparado com o movimento real alcançado com a técnica cirúrgica dos dois tempos pós-operatórios. Resultados: Nos resultados, o movimento de avanço maxilo-mandibular proporcionou um ganho de vias aéreas em todas as análises, com diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os períodos T2 e T1, e T3 e T1, com um valor de p<0,05. No entanto, ao comparar os períodos T2 e T3, houve uma diferença estatisticamente significativa para as análises de área e de volume, comprovando uma recidiva parcial do ganho em via aérea alcançado em T2. Conclusões: Finalmente, podemos concluir que o avanço maxilo-mandibular é uma técnica cirúrgica que proporciona um ganho linear, de área e volume de vias aéreas superiores posteriores nos períodos pós-operatório imediato e após seis meses, no entanto, o ganho em vias aéreas apresenta uma recidiva parcial em períodos tardios. Também pudemos concluir que a avaliação de vias aéreas através de uma análise cefalométrica linear pode trazer resultados limitados quando comparados aos estudos de área e volume dessa região anatômica<br>Objective: The purpose of this study is to quantify cephalometric and tridimensional alterations of the posterior airway space of patients undergoing orthognathic surgery of maxillomandibular advancement. Material and Methods: 20 patients were standardized selected with dentofacial deformity of class II, with maxillomandibular deficiency, treated by maxillomandibular advancement. Cone-Beam Computed Tomography were performed in 3 distinct periods of the treated patients, preoperative (T1), immediate postoperative period, until 15 days after surgery (T2), and late postoperative period, at least 6 months after surgery. The posterior airway space were quantified in each period of each patient, and the results were compared with the real movement achieved with the surgical technique employed. Results: In the results, the maxillomandibular advancement promoved an increase on posterior airway space of each patient, in all the analysis performed, with a significantly statistic difference between T2 and T1, and between T3 and T1, p<0,05. However, there was a statistic difference between T2 and T3 in the area and volume analysis, what means that the airway space comes narrow after 6 months when compared with the immediate postoperative period. Conclusions: Finally, the maxillomandibular advancement performed a great linear, area and volume increase in posterior airway space in immediate and late postoperative period, however, there is a partial loss of the increased space after 6 months. Previous issue date: 2007<br>Resumo: A radiografia cefalométrica lateral tem sido utilizada por grande parte dos profissionais da área odontológica e médica. Para a obtenção dessa radiografia, há a necessidade de orientação da cabeça do paciente, sendo o plano horizontal de Frankfurt (PHF) o mais utilizado pelos radiologistas. Dentre os fatores que levam os profissionais, especialmente os ortodontistas, a recusarem as radiografias cefalométricas é a orientação cefálica incorreta. As causas que levam a obtenção do posicionamento incorreto tem origens variadas, como a movimentação da cabeça do paciente e falhas por parte do operador. Sugeriuse que talvez o PHF ósseo não tem perfeita correspondência com o PHF cutâneo, proporcionando radiografias incorretas quanto ao posicionamento do paciente. Devido a esta hipótese, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a relação entre o PHF ósseo e o PHF cutâneo em diferentes raças e padrão facial. A amostra foi constituída de 27 indivíduos, os quais foram divididos em 3 grupos de acordo com a raça que pertenciam: 9 leucodermas, 9 melanodermas e 9 xantodermas. Em seguida, esta mesma amostra foi dividida de acordo com o grupo facial: 14 braquifaciais e 13 dolicofaciais. To obtain them, the patient's head should be adequately positioned, being the Frankfort horizontal plane (FHP) the most recommended and used by the Radiologists. Incorrect cephalic positioning is one of the factors that lead professionals, especially orthodontists, to reject such radiographies. This incorrect positioning might be related to the patient's head movement and/or errors made by the operator. Osseous FHP might not have a perfect correspondence with cutaneous FHP, leading professionals to judge the xray as unsatisfactory. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between osseous FHP and cutaneous FHP (a line linking the superioredge of tragus to the inferioredge of eyeorbit), considering the cephalic variation among the different races, using the lateral cephalometric approach. The sample consisted of 27 individuals: 9 negroids, 9 caucasians, and 9 asians, being also assigned to two groups according to their facial pattern: 14 brachyfacial and 13 dolichofacial. Previous issue date: 2012<br>Resumo: Análises cefalométricas constituem um importante passo no planejamento pré-operatório de cirurgias ortognáticas. A partir da década de 80, traçados cefalométricos digitais foram incorporados e tornaram-se populares entre ortodontistas e cirurgiões. O Dolphin Imaging Software® (Chatsworth, California) é um dos programas computacionais mais comumente utilizados em todo o mundo para fins de planejamento e previsão do resultado pós-operatório. Para a análise cefalométrica, é necessária a digitalização de teleradiografias de perfil. Este trabalho, dividido em três capítulos, analisou no Dolphin Imaging Software: 1) se há diferença nas imagens digitalizadas por câmeras digitais ou scanners para uso neste programa 2) a inclinação ântero-posterior de incisivos centrais superiores e inferiores no pré-operatório imediato de pacientes Classe II de Angle submetidos à cirurgia de avanço mandibular e; 3) a recidiva de cirurgias de avanço maxilar em pacientes Classe III de Angle nos quais um cimento de fosfato de cálcio foi utilizado como material de enxertia. Para a realização do primeiro estudo foram utilizadas 10 teleradiografias de perfil escaneadas e fotografadas. Traçados cefalométricos foram realizados e medidas lineares e angulares foram analisadas. Os testes t-Student e Wilcoxon foram aplicados e concluiu-se que ambos os métodos podem ser utilizados para a digitalização das imagens, sem diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre os mesmos. O segundo estudo utilizou 30 teleradiografias de perfil de pacientes Classe II no pré-operatório imediato de cirurgias de avanço mandibular. Foram realizados os traçados digitais e a inclinação dos incisivos superiores e inferiores foi analisada por meio de medidas angulares e lineares. Após aplicados os testes estatísticos (t Student), concluiu-se que os incisivos inferiores, em sua maioria, estavam compensados, ou seja, demonstravam uma inclinação mais vestibular, enquanto que os incisivos superiores estavam dentro das medidas consideradas ideais, tratando-se de descompensação dentária. Por fim, o último estudo avaliou a recidiva do movimento de avanço de maxila em 8 pacientes Classe III em que um cimento de fosfato de cálcio foi utilizado como material de enxertia. Foram realizados os traçados cefalométricos das radiografias pré-operatórias e pós-operatórias imediatas e tardias e medidas lineares e angulares que ditam o posicionamento maxilar foram avaliadas. Após realizado o teste estatístico de Tukey (ANOVA), pode-se concluir que apenas em 1 medida foi observada recidiva do movimento, podendo esta técnica ser considerada estável<br>Abstract: Cephalometric analyzes are an important step in preoperative planning of orthognathic surgery. From the 80's, digital cephalometric tracings were incorporated and became popular among orthodontists and surgeons. Dolphin Imaging Software (Chatsworth, California) is one of the computer programs most commonly used worldwide for planning purposes and forecasting the postoperative result. For cephalometric analysis is needed to digitize cephalometrics radiographs. This study was divided in three chapters, analyzed at Dolphin Imaging Software: 1) whether there are differences in the scanned images by digital cameras or scanners for use in this program, 2) the anteroposterior inclination of the upper and lower central incisors in the immediate preoperative patients with Angle Class II underwent mandibular advancement surgery and 3) relapse of maxillary advancement surgery in patients with Class III malocclusion in which a calcium phosphate cement was used as grafting material. For the first study were used 10 cephalometric radiographs scanned and photographed. Cephalometric tracings were performed, and linear and angular measurements were analyzed. The Student t test and Wilcoxon was applied and was concluded that both methods can be used for the digitization of images without statistically significant differences between them. The second study used 30 immediate preoperative cephalometric radiographs of Class II patients that were submitted to mandibular advancement surgery. Digital tracings were made and the inclination of the upper and lower incisors was analyzed by means of angular and linear measurements. After applied the statistical tests (Student t test), it was concluded that the lower incisors were mostly compensated, showing a labially inclination while the upper incisors were at the "ideal" position. Finally, the last study examined the relapse of maxillary advancement surgery of 8 Class III patients where calcium phosphate cement was used as a grafting material. We carried out the cephalometric analysis of radiographs of preoperative and postoperative early and late, and linear and angular measurements that dictate the maxillary positioning were evaluated. A amostra constou de 80 teleradiografias em norma lateral, dividida em dois grupos da seguinte forma: GRUPO I - referente a 40 crianças com hábitos e GRUPO II - correspondente a 40 crianças sem hábitos. A amostra foi composta por radiografias em norma lateral de pacientes não submetidos a tratamento ortodôntico, pertencentes a Disciplina de Ortodontia da Faculdade de Odontologia Campus de Araçatuba - UNESP. Os resultados obtidos pelas grandezas cefalométricas sugerem: as crianças com hábitos de sucção estão mais propensas ao desenvolvimento de protrusão dos incisivos superiores e inferiores, e a um padrão de crescimento vertical cefálico. Este estudo conclui que os hábitos de sucção, são fatores determinantes na modificação das estruturas dentárias e esqueléticas representada pela inclinação dos incisivos e rotação póstero inferior da mandíbula.<br>Abstract: On this study was achieved the cephalometric comparation in children of 8-9 year old with and without habits of rubber nipple or thumb suction; using some especial measurementes, which were divided to permit a better diagnostic interpretation: dental components (1.NA, 1-NA, 1.NB, 1-NB); cephalic growth patterns (SN.GN, SN Go Me) and facial height proportion (S-Go/N-Me x 100). The sample found out from 80 teleradiographs in lateral pattern, were divided into two groups as following: Group I: 40 children with suction habits and Group II: 40 children without suction habits. The sample was formed by lateral radiographs of patients who had not received any orthodontic treatment from the Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba (FOA), Universidade Estadual de São Paulo (UNESP). The results acquired by the cephalometric measurements suggest that the children with suction habits have more tendency to obtain superior and inferior incisors protrusion, and inclination and a vertical cephalic growth pattern. This study concludes that suction habits are determining factors for structural dental and skeletal changes represented by the incisor tooth inclination and posterior - inferior rotation of the mandible.<br>Doutor

Cephalometric radiography has been accepted worldwide as a powerful tool to study craniofacial growth, to diagnose deviations of an individual from population norms, and to plan orthodontic treatment and assess its progress and results, although it is not free from errors.
Chung, Runck, Bilben, Kau (1986) state that racial differences in craniofacial morphology are well recognized. Their study shows that the Oriental people including Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans, characterised by larger lateral dimensions Caucasians, as measured by bizygomatic diameter, bigonial diameter, and head breadth. The anteroposterior dimension as measured by head length shows the opposite trend. It is not known what genetic forces are responsible for maintaining these racial differences.
As a result, and as also proved by many cephalometric studies on different races, different race gives different appearance cephalometrically too.
The aim of this study is to find the pattern of dyscrepancy in Class II division 1 malocclusion in Indonesian people. The Indonesian is the outcome of the intermingling of many ancient races. If the "normal" occlusion of Asian people appears with certain unique cephalometric characteristics when comparison is made with the Caucasians norms, it seems logical to assume that the "abnormal" occlusion will show unique characteristics as well.

Dentre as más-oclusões mais frequentemente encontradas na infância e passíveis de intervenção precoce, estão as mordidas cruzadas posteriores que normalmente são caracterizadas por deficiência no crescimento transversal do arco superior. Nos casos de atresia maxilar o tratamento mais indicado é a expansão rápida, que pode ser realizada por diferentes terapias. Na presente pesquisa utilizou-se o aparelho Hyrax tendo como objetivo avaliar as alterações transversais e verticais da maxila. Foram selecionados 20 pacientes de ambos os sexo, entre 7 e 11 anos que apresentavam mordida cruzada posterior uni ou bilateral. Realizou-se telerradiografias em norma frontal (P.A.) antes e após a expansão. A fim de evitar que a falta de padronização dessas radiografias pudesse influenciar nos resultados, idealizou-se um método de padronização para tais radiografias. Os resultados mostraram que a correção da mordida cruzada posterior como o aparelho Hyrax, que ocorreu em todos os casos, foi em função tanto da abertura da sutura palatina mediana como também pela inclinação dos molares. A medida JgE-JgD relacionada com a expansão maxilar aumentou significantemente em todos os casos tratados. Nas avaliações dentárias as medidas verticais não apresentaram diferenças significantes, o contrário das medidas transversais (FTE-FTD; FBE-FBD; LO.BTE; LO.BTD; BTE.BTD). A largura da cavidade nasal também aumentou significantemente (CNE-CND). O método de padronização proposto permite, portanto, utilizar as medidas que avaliam a expansão rápida da maxila, através das radiografias posteroanteriores, com segurança, inclusive no sentido vertical.<br>Early treatment is frequently proposed in orthodontics as it prevent that mild malocclusions require more complex procedures futhermore. Among the most frequent malocclusion observed in childhood and that can be early treated are the posterior crossbites. These are usually characterized by a decreased transversal growth of the upper arch. In the constriction maxillary cases, the most indicated treatment is rapid maxillary expansion that can be achieved by different therapies. In the present research the Hyrax appliance was used in order to evaluate the transverse and vertical outcomes in maxillary base. Twenty patients of both gender, from 7 to 11 years old, presenting uni or bilateral posterior crossbite were selected. Posteroanterior radiographs were performed before and after expansion. These radiographs were standardized in order to avoid that problems with lack of standardization influence the results. The obtained data showed that the posterior crossbite correction with Hyrax appliance, observed in all the cases, was consequent either to midpalatal suture opening and molar buccal tipping. JgE-JgD measurement related to maxillary expansion increased significantly in all the treated cases. According to dental evaluation, vertical measurements did not show significant differences, which is in opposition to the transverse measurements (FTE-FTD; FBE-FBD; LO.BTE; LO.BTD; BTE.BTD). The nasal cavity width also increased significantly (CNE-CND). The standardization method proposed showed to be reliably useful for maxilla rapid expansion evaluation with posteroanterior radiographs even for vertical considerations.

Orientador: Ary dos Santos Pinto<br>Resumo: Este estudo objetivou avaliar a relação da projeção labial com diferentes inclinações de incisivos e padrões esqueléticos faciais. Foram selecionadas documentações ortodônticas de diagnóstico de 100 pré-adolescentes de 7 a 9 anos de idade e origem étnica diversa. Esta amostra foi dividida em 2 grupos equivalentes em número e gênero segundo avaliação da fotografia do perfil facial (concordância de 3 avaliadores) considerando a projeção labial, determinada pela posição dos lábios superior e inferior em relação ao mento tegumentar e região subnasal: Grupo 1: Projeção labial normal e Grupo 2: Biprojeção labial. Telerradiografias em norma lateral destas crianças foram utilizadas para a obtenção de medidas representativas da posição dos lábios, inclinações dos incisivos, padrões de crescimento facial e relação anteroposterior maxilomandibular. Os dados foram analisados quanto ao dimorfismo sexual e diferenças entre os grupos pelo test t de Student. A associação entre as medidas cefalométricas e posição labial foi verificada pelo coeficiente de correlação de Pearson. Nenhuma variável apresentou diferença quanto ao sexo. A projeção dos lábios superior e inferior mostraram fraca correlação com protrusão maxilar, moderada correlação com relação maxilomandibular, fraca correlação com inclinação dos incisivos inferiores, fraca correlação com inclinação dos incisivos superiores (lábio superior) e fraca correlação com padrão de crescimento facial (lábio inferior). (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo)<br>Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship of lip projection with different inclinations of incisors and skeletal facial patterns. The orthodontic documentation of 100 pre-adolescents with 7 to 9 years of age and diverse ethnic origins was selected. The sample was divided according to facial profile into Group 1, with normal lip protrusion and Group 2, with lip biprotrusion. The classification was based on the agreement of 3 evaluators who used facial profile photographs to determine the position of the upper and lower lips in relation to the soft tissue pogoniun and the subnasale region. Lateral teleradiographs of the children were used to record lip position, inclinations of the incisors, patterns of facial growth, and anteroposterior maxillomandibular relationship. Data were analyzed by sex and groups, and differences were compared with Student's t-test. The association between cephalometric measures and labial position was verified with the Pearson correlation coefficient. No difference regarding sex was found. The protrusion of the upper and lower lips showed weak correlation with maxillary protrusion, moderate correlation with maxillomandibular relationship, weak correlation with lower incisor inclination, weak correlation with upper incisors (upper lip), and weak correlation with facial growth pattern (lower lip). Previous issue date: 2002<br>Resumo: A pesquisa definiu os valores cefalométricos da Análise Craniofacial da Fundação Tweed, em amostra de brasileiros. O estudo constava de 212 radiografias cefalométricas de indivíduos, na faixa etária de 12 a 15 anos, as quais foram divididas em dois grupos: o Grupo Classe II, com 169 telerradiografias da cabeça em norma lateral, de indivíduos leucodermas com maloclusão de Classe II, 1a. divisão de Angle, de ambos os sexos (82 do sexo masculino e 87 do feminino); e o Grupo Controle, com 43 telerradiografias em norma lateral, de indivíduos com oclusão clinicamente excelente, também de ambos os sexos (21 do sexo masculino e 22 do feminino). As telerradiografias foram selecionadas no arquivo da Disciplina de Ortodontia, da Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba, UNICAMP, previamente ao tratamento ortodôntico. Os resultados demonstraram não existir dimorfismo sexual dentro de cada grupo, o qual foi comprovado pelo Teste "t" de student. A análise exploratória ('+ ou ¿ ' 0,5 desvio padrão) tornou possível a determinação dos limites de tolerância e a elaboração da Tabela da Análise Craniofacial com os respectivos intervalos cefalométricos. Além de observar que não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa na posição de maxila entre os grupos estudados, ou seja, a maxila apresentou-se bem posicionada em relação à base do crânio. Por outro lado, a mandíbula apresentou-se retruída em relação à base do crânio nos casos de Classe II.O padrão esquelético não ficou definido pois somente o IAF apresentou um padrão vertical na Classe II, enquanto os valores de Eixo Y, SN.PIO, SN.GoMe e FMA não apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos estudados. A Classe II, 1.a divisão, apresentou os incisivos inferiores mais inclinados para vestibular e o perfil facial convexo<br>Abstract: The research defined the cephalometric values of the Craniofacial Analysis of the Tweed Foundation where in Brazilian sample entered the study. This study consisted of 212 cephalometric radiographs from subjects, in the 12-15 age group, which were divided in two groups: the Group Class II,with 169 head lateral norm teleradiographs from Caucasian subjects, with Angle Class II , division 1 malocclusion, of both sexes (82 males and 87 females); and the Control Group, with 43 lateral norm teleradiographs from subjects whose occlusjon was clinically considered excellent., and also of both sexes (21 males and 22 females). The teleradiographs were selected from the file of the Orthodontic Area, of the Faculty of Dentistry of Piracicaba - UNICAMP, previously to the orthodontic treatment. The results demonstrated not to exist sexual dimorphism inside each group, which was proved by the Student's "t" test. The exploratory analysis ('+ or -' 0,5 standard deviation) made it possible to determine the tolerance limits and to elaborate on the Craniofacial Analysis Table with the respective cephalometric intervals. In addition to this, it was observed that the diffe,rence between the two studied groups, was not statiscally significant according to the maxilla position, in other words, the maxilla reported itself in a good position in relation to the cranial base. On the other hand, the mandible reported itself in a retruded position in relation to the cranial base in the Class II cases. The skeletal pattern was not defined because only the IAF reported a vertical pattern in Class II, while the Y Axis, SN.PIO, SN.GoMe and FMA values did not report any difference statistically significant between the studied groups. Previous issue date: 2006<br>Resumo: Em virtude da grande variabilidade dos métodos utilizados como sistemas de referência nas mensurações das grandezas cefalométricas convencionais, que levam a diversos conflitos na interpretação do relacionamento ântero-posterior entre maxila e mandíbula, a presente pesquisa propôs-se, por meio da análise cefalométrica a verificar as relações do ângulo ANB, da análise Wits (AO-BO), da distância AF-BF, da Projeção USP e da distância AP-BP, nos diferentes tipos faciais, bem como as correlações e a confiabilidade entre as grandezas estudadas. A partir de uma amostra de 2.000 indivíduos adultos selecionou-se 400, por meio de aplicação de questionário, que nunca haviam se submetido a tratamento ortodôntico. Os indivíduos foram analisados e selecionaram-se aqueles que possuíam os seguintes critérios de inclusão: brasileiros da região de Araras; leucodermas; ausência de síndromes; presença de todos os elementos dentários (exceto os 3os molares); trespasse vertical com incisivos superiores cobrindo o terço incisal dos incisivos inferiores; trespasse horizontal em torno de 2mm; relação de molares e caninos em chave de oclusão; selamento labial passivo; perfil facial harmônico. Os indivíduos que encontravam-se dentro dos critérios de seleção da amostra foram submetidos a tomadas radiográficas, obtendo-se 79 telerradiografias de cabeça em norma lateral: 40 do gênero masculino e 39 do feminino, com média de idade de 24 anos e cinco meses.O ângulo ANB apresentou valores médios de 2,77º para o gênero feminino e, 2,93º para o masculino, portanto, bem próximos dos padrões de normalidade, comportando-se de maneira similar nos três Grupos. Na análise de Wits, os valores médios para o gênero masculino e para o feminino foram de 1,49mm e de 2,83mm, respectivamente, portanto, diferindo dos valores determinados como padrão. Quando da comparação inter-grupos, estatisticamente, o Grupo 2 apresentou as maiores médias. Para a distância AF-BF, estabeleceu-se a média de 3,72mm. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os três Grupos esqueléticos estudados. Os valores médios encontrados para a ProjUSP, foram de -3,55mm para o gênero masculino, e -3,62mm para o feminino. Nos três Grupos estudados, constatou-se que a ProjUSP alterou-se segundo a divergência facial, apresentando valores menores pra o Grupo 2 (-3,16mm) e maiores no Grupo 1 (-3,78mm). Os valores médios observados para a distância AP-BP, de 3,9mm para o gênero feminino, e de 4,05mm para o masculino, encontraram-se na faixa de normalidade estabelecida. Quando da divisão em Grupos, os valores médios observados para a mesma medida foram de 4,12mm, 4,25mm e 3,57mm, para os Grupos 1, 2 e 3 respectivamente, constatando-se que apesar da influência da divergência facial, todos os Grupos apresentaram-se dentro da faixa de normalidade de 3 a 7mm. Com base na metodologia empregada e nos resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que a divergência facial, medida pela variação do ângulo FMA e pelo IAF, não influenciou a leitura dos valores do ângulo ANB, da análise de Wits, da distância AF-BF, da Projeção USP e da distância AP-BP. Dentre as grandezas estudadas apenas a distância AP-BP apresentou maior confiabilidade na avaliação do relacionamento ântero-posterior entre as bases apicais. Concluiu-se também que nenhum método de avaliação ântero-posterior das bases ósseas pode ser considerado como absoluto, ou mais confiável em relação ao outro<br>Abstract: The object of this research was to assess the behavior of the ANB angle, the Wits assessment, of AF-BF distance, the USP Projection and the AP-BP distance in leucodermic Brazilian individuals with clinically normal occlusions. An assessment was made of 79 lateral teleradiographs of the head, there being 40 of men and 39 of women, divided into three groups according to the facial type, determined by the values of the FMA and IAF angles, obtained by the ratio between AFP and AFA. The ANB angle presented mean values of 2.62º for women and 2.7º for men, therefore, very close to the normality standards, behaving in a similar manner in the three groups. In the Wits assessment, the mean values for men and for women were 1.49mm and 2.83mm, respectively, therefore differing from the values determined as being standard. With regard to the inter-group comparison, statistically, Group 2 presented the highest means. For the AF-BF distance, a mean of 3.72 mm was established. There was no statistically significant difference among the three skeletal groups studied. The mean values found for the ProjUSP, were -3.55mm for men and -3.62mm for women. In the three studied groups, it was found that the ProjUSP changed according to facial divergence, presenting lower values for Group 2 (-3.16mm) and higher values for Group 1 (-3.78mm). The mean values observed for the distance AP-BP of 3.9mm for women and 4.05mm for men, were found to be within the established normality range. With regard to the division into groups, the mean values observed for the same measurement were 4.12mm, 4.25mm and 3.57mm, for Group 1, 2 and 3 respectively, and it was found that in spite of the influence of facial divergence, all the groups presented values within the normality range of 3 to 7mm. This being so, the results allowed one to conclude that: facial divergence, measured by the variation of the angle FMA and by IAF, had no significant influence on the reading of the values of angle ANB, Wits assessment, distance AF-BF, ProjUSP and distance APBP; and of the five variables used to determine the antero-posterior discrepancy of the bone bases, only the measurements AO-BO and AF-BF presented statistically significant positive correlations. Previous issue date: 2007<br>Resumo: A influência dos músculos mastigatórios sobre a morfologia facial é importante para o entendimento do crescimento normal e da manifestação das anomalias morfológicas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a atividade eletromiográfica dos músculos masseter e temporal em indivíduos com diferentes tipos faciais verticais. A amostra foi composta de 44 voluntários com idade entre 18 e 35 anos, de ambos os gêneros sem distinção de etnia. Medidas cefalométricas em telerradiografias em norma lateral e análise de agrupamento foram utilizadas para classificá-los em três grupos, de acordo com as dimensões verticais da face em tipos faciais distintos: braquifacial (Grupo 1), mesofacial (Grupo 2) e dolicofacial (Grupo 3). Além da avaliação cefalométrica, os voluntários foram submetidos a um exame eletromiográfico com a finalidade de registrar a atividade dos músculos masseter e da porção anterior do temporal em ambos os lados. Foram aplicados os testes Kolmogorov- Smirnov e de Levene para verificar a normalidade e a homogeneidade de variância. ANOVA e o teste de Kruskal-Wallis identificaram diferenças estatísticas entre grupos para os dados que apresentaram e não apresentaram distribuição normal e homogênea, respectivamente. Todos os testes estatísticos foram realizados com nível de significância de 5% (p < 0,05). Para a avaliação repouso apenas os músculos temporal e masseter direitos apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos. As diferenças foram observadas entre os Grupos 1 e 2 (p = 0,02) e 1 e 3 (p = 0,038) para o músculo temporal direito; e entre os Grupos 1 e 2 (p = 0,029) para o músculo masseter direito, tendo o Grupo 1 apresentado sempre os menores valores eletromiográficos. Para a avaliação da isotonia, nenhum dos músculos apresentou diferença estatisticamente significante entre grupos. Mesmo diante das diferenças observadas no repouso, pôde-se concluir que os diferentes tipos faciais verticais não determinam padrões de atividade eletromiográfica distintos para os músculos masseter e porção anterior do temporal durante o repouso e a mastigação bilateral.<br>Abstract: The influence of masticatory muscles over the facial morphology is important to comprehend the normal growth and the manifest of morphological anomalies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the electromyographic activity of masseter and temporal muscles among individuals with different vertical facial types. The sample was composed by forty-four volunteers of both genders ranging from 18 to 35 years of age. Cephalometrics measures in lateral teleradiographs and multivariate statistical analysis were used to classify the volunteers according with their vertical facial dimensions in three groups: brachyfacial (Group 1), mesofacial (Group 2) and dolicofacial (Group 3). Beside this, the volunteers were submitted to an electromyographic examination to register the activity of masseter and anterior portion of temporal muscles bilaterally. The Kolmogorov- Smirnov and Levene tests were applied to verify variance normality and homogeneity. ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test identified statistical differences among the studied groups for data that presented and not normal and homogeny distribution, respectively. All statistical tests were performed with 5% of significance level (p < 0.05). For rest evaluation only the right temporal and masseter muscles presented statistically significant differences among the groups. The differences were observed between Groups 1 and 2 (p = 0.02) and 1 and 3 (p = 0.038) for the right temporal muscle; and between Groups 1 and 2 (p = 0.029) for the right masseter muscle. Generally, group 1 presented the lowest electromyographic values for the four muscles evaluated during rest. For isotonic, none of the muscles presented statistically significant difference among the groups. For the analyzed sample, it could be concluded that the different vertical facial types do not determine distinct patterns of electromyographic activity to masseter and anterior portion of temporal muscles during the rest and the bilateral mastication.<br>Doutorado<br>Anatomia<br>Doutor em Biologia Buco-Dental

Previous issue date: 2009<br>Resumo: Este trabalho teve como objetivo geral avaliar os diagnósticos cefalométricos préoperatórios de pacientes clinicamente diagnosticados como portadores de deformidades dento-faciais Classe III por deficiência antero-posterior de maxila, que foram submetidos a cirurgias para avanço maxilar por meio de osteotomias Lê Fort I em duas instituições de ensino. Para tanto, foram analisadas as telerradiografias de perfil pré-operatórias imediatas de 50 pacientes submetidos a cirurgias ortognáticas para avanço maxilar, associado ou não a mentoplastia. As telerradiografias foram traçadas manualmente e digitalmente (Dolphin Imaging and Management Solutions, Chatsworth, CA, EUA) e submetidas às análises cefalométricas de McNamara, Steiner e Legan & Burstone, pelo mesmo operador, utilizando material e técnica padronizados, com três repetições de cada análise, gerando um valor médio para cada medida. Os valores obtidos foram tabulados e submetidos a análise estatística usando-se o teste t para uma média (p_0,05) para comparação com os valores norma, e o teste t pareado para comparação entre os métodos manual e digital (p_0,05). Baseado nos resultados obtidos, foram redigidos três artigos científicos abordando diferentes aspectos do estudo, apresentados aqui em três capítulos. O capítulo 1 abrange a análise cefalométrica dento-esqueletal e de tecidos moles, obtida segundo o método manual, que foi confrontada com as normas cefalométricas. O capítulo 2 discorre sobre a inclinação de incisivos, apresentando os resultados obtidos no presente estudo e discute sobre as compensações dentárias e sua importância no planejamento e resultados das cirurgias ortognáticas. No capítulo 3, são apresentados os resultados das análises manual e digital, as quais foram comparadas estatisticamente. Baseado nos resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que: (1) a análise cefalométrica de pacientes com deformidades Classe III não apresentou correlação com o diagnóstico clínico em grande parte dos parâmetros analisados; (2) a maioria dos pacientes Classe III submetidos a avanços maxilares apresentou descompensação incompleta de incisivos no pré-operatório imediato; (3) a análise cefalométrica digital não apresentou correlação com a análise manual, quando empregada a metodologia descrita.<br>Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the preoperative cephalometric diagnoses of skeletal Class III patients, who had been clinically diagnosed as maxillary defficient and undergone maxillary advancements with Le Fort I osteotomies in two teaching facilities. The preoperative lateral cephalometric radiographs of 50 patients treated with maxillary advancements, associated or not with genioplasties, were analyzed. Radiographs were hand traced and digitally traced using Dolphin Imaging 10 (Dolphin Imaging and Management Solutions, Chatsworth, CA, EUA), and McNamara, Steiner and Legan & Burstone analyses were used. The same operator performed all tracings three times to insure consistency and reliability. A mean value of the three tracings resulted for each measurement. The values were statistically analyzed using the t test for a mean (p_0.05) to compare them with the norm values. The paired t test was used to compare manual and digital results (p_0.05). Based on the results, three scientific articles were written, focusing on different aspects of the study and presented here in three chapters. Chapter 1 presents the dental-skeletal and soft tissue analyses obtained from hand tracing and confronted with cephalometric norms. Chapter 2 focuses on incisor inclinations, presenting the results and discussing the importance of dental compensations on treatment planning and outcomes of orthognathic surgery. In chapter 3, manual and digital cephalometric analysis are presented and compared statistically. Based on the results, the conclusions are: (1) cephalometric analysis of patients with Class III dentofacial deformities had no significant correlation with clinical diagnosis for most of the analyzed parameters; (2) most of the Class III patients undergoing maxillary advancements presented incomplete decompensation of incisors in the immediate preoperative radiographs; (3) digital cephalometric analysis had no correlation with manual analysis when the described methodology was used.<br>Doutorado<br>Cirurgia e Traumatologia Buco-Maxilo-Faciais<br>Doutor em Clínica Odontológica

Estudou-se a aplicabilidade de um padrão cefalométrico norte-americano em pacientes brasileiros submetidos à cirurgia ortognática, por meio da comparação dos traçados cefalométricos pós-tratamento ortodôntico-cirúrgico de 29 pacientes (14 homens e 15 mulheres), que passaram por cirurgia de maxila e mandíbula, com ou sem mentoplastia, com o padrão cefalométrico utilizado como orientação para o planejamento dos casos. Os traçados foram gerados pelo programa Dolphin Imaging 9.0 a partir de telerradiografias em norma lateral digitalizadas, nas quais foram marcados 48 pontos de referência dentários, ósseos e de tecidos moles. Dessa forma, obteve-se 26 grandezas cefalométricas lineares e angulares para posterior comparação com os valores normativos norte-americanos, considerando-se o dimorfismo sexual e as eventuais modificações feitas no planejamento em virtude das necessidades individuais de cada caso e das possíveis diferenças étnico-raciais. Os dados da amostra foram confrontados com o padrão individualmente de maneira descritiva e em conjunto, por meio da comparação das médias e desvios-padrão com o teste \"t\" de Student. Os resultados mostraram que para os homens as médias da amostra foram significantemente diferentes do padrão em apenas cinco das grandezas estudadas, enquanto que para as mulheres, nove apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significativa. No entanto, apesar da similaridade das médias na maioria das medidas em ambos os gêneros, os dados mostraram grandes variações individuais. A análise dos resultados obtidos sugere que o padrão cefalométrico norte-americano estudado é aplicável como referência para o planejamento de casos ortodôntico-cirúrgicos de pacientes brasileiros desde que se atente às variações individuais, caracterizando o planejamento de acordo com as necessidades de cada paciente.<br>It was studied the applicability of a North American cephalometric norm in brazilian patients submitted to orthognathic surgery, through the comparison of the posttreatment cephalometric values of 29 patient (14 men and 15 women), who had bimaxillary surgery, with or without genioplasty, with the cephalometric norm used as orientation for the treatment planning of the cases. The tracings were generated by the program Dolphin Imaging 9.0 from lateral head films that were digitized, in which were marked 48 dental, osseous and soft tissue references points. In that way, it was obtained 26 linear and angular cephalometric measures for subsequent comparison with the normative values, being considered the sexual dimorphism and the eventual modifications done in the planning due to the individual needs of each case and the possible ethnic-racial differences. The data of the sample were confronted individually with the pattern in a descriptive way, and together through the comparison of the averages and standard deviations with the Student \"t\" test. The results showed that for the men the averages of the sample were significantly different from the norm in only five of the studied measures, while for the women, nine cephalometric values presented contrast statistically significant; however, in spite of the similarity of the averages in several measures in both groups, the data demonstrated great individual variations. The analysis of the obtained results suggests that the North American cephalometric norm studied is applicable as reference for the planning of orthognathic surgery in brazilian patients, since it is attempted to the individual variations, characterizing the planning in agreement with the needs of each patient

Introdução: A análise cefalométrica de McNamara Jr. é um meio auxiliar para o diagnóstico das discrepâncias dentoesqueléticas e amplamente utilizada, principalmente porque fornece um diagnóstico orientador dos procedimentos cirúrgicos a serem realizados ou à utilização de aparelhos funcionais. Muitos trabalhos já demonstraram que diferentes etnias apresentam padrões cefalométricos distintos. Nesse sentido, as características próprias dos indivíduos devem ser respeitadas, para suportar o diagnóstico e facilitar o plano de tratamento entre as diferentes etnias e seus diferentes padrões de miscigenação. Objetivo: Determinar os valores médios de normalidade das grandezas cefalométricas relacionadas à análise de McNamara Jr. de jovens mestiços nipobrasileiros, com oclusão normal, descendentes de japoneses e brasileiros e comparar os resultados das variáveis com amostras de jovens brasileiros leucodermas e xantodermas que apresentem as mesmas características. Material e Métodos: Foram utilizadas 40 telerradiografias de jovens leucodermas, 32 de nipobrasileiros e 33 de xantodermas provenientes do arquivo da Disciplina de Ortodontia da Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru - Universidade de São Paulo. As três amostras foram constituídas de indivíduos com oclusão normal e face bem balanceada e foram divididas por gênero para facilitar a comparação. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente utilizando-se: análise de variância a um critério (ANOVA), teste t e a análise de covariância (ANCOVA). Resultados: Encontrou-se diferença estatística (p<0,05) entre as etnias apenas para o ângulo nasolabial no gênero masculino, apresentando os nipobrasileiros um valor intermediário entre os xantodermas e leucodermas. Conclusão: As amostras apresentaram características semelhantes para as variáveis estudadas, já que apenas o ângulo nasolabial no gênero masculino apresentou diferença estatística significante.<br>Introduction: McNamara Jr.s cephalometric analysis is an aiding means to diagnose dental and skeletal discrepancies and is widely used, as it provides a guiding diagnosis for surgical procedures to be performed or for the use of functional devices. Quite a few studies have already showed that different ethnic groups have different cephalometric patterns. Thus, single characteristics should be respected as to support the diagnosis and help the treatment plan for different ethnic groups and their different patterns of miscegenation. Objective: Obtain mean normal values used in the cephalometric analysis of McNamara Jr. for adolescent Japanese-Brazilian descents with normal occlusion and also compared this sample with similar samples of Brazilian-Whites and Brazilian-Japaneses. Methods: Cephalometric films were used from 40 Brazilian-Whites, 32 Japanese-Brazilians and 33 Brazilian- Japaneses descents from the file of the Orthodontic Department of Dental School of Bauru University of São Paulo. The three samples were composed of individuals with normal occlusion and pleasant profile and were divided into genders to help the comparison. The data were statistically analyzed by using the ANOVA, t test and ANCOVA. Results: There was significant difference between Brazilian-Whites, Japanese-Brazilians and Brazilian-Japaneses descents only at the lip-nasal angle of males. Japanese-Brazilians descents displayed an intermediate value between Brazilian-Whites and Brazilian-Japaneses. Conclusion: The samples presented similar characteristics in the studied variables and only showed a significant statistical difference at the lip-nasal angle for males.

O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar radiograficamente, indivíduos com perfis faciais equilibrados utilizando-se como referência uma linha extracraniana. Foram utilizadas 25 telerradiografias em norma lateral de indivíduos brasileiros, de cor de pele branca, do gênero masculino, com idades cronológicas entre 18 e 33 anos, obtidas na posição natural da cabeça orientada. Utilizou-se a análise cefalométrica para avaliar a projeção nasal, os lábios e o pogônio mole em relação à linha vertical verdadeira a partir do ponto subnasal (SnV), a maxila e a mandíbula em relação à base do crânio e os incisivos em relação às suas respectivas bases ósseas. Por meio do teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov (P<0,05) e de Shapiro-Wilk (P<0,05), verificou-se que as variáveis não apresentaram fuga da normalidade. Foram calculadas então as médias, desvio padrão, mediana, valores máximos e mínimos para cada variável. O erro do método foi analisado com a correlação intraclasse e com a fórmula de Dalhberg, sendo encontrados erros muito pequenos entre as mensurações. Foi verificado que em média, a projeção nasal foi de 17,94 mm, que o lábio superior estava em média 2,20 mm à frente da linha subnasal vertical (SnV), o lábio inferior -0,24 mm atrás da linha SnV, e o pogônio mole -5,95 mm atrás da linha SnV. Os valores médios de posicionamento da maxila e mandíbula em relação à base do crânio foram de 84,800 e 82,820 respectivamente. Os valores médios das inclinações dos incisivos superiores e inferiores em relação às suas bases ósseas foram de 25,870 e 27,220 respectivamente. A correlação entre as medidas cefalométricas foi feita por meio do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson (P<0,05). As principais correlações positivas estatisticamente significantes foram encontradas entre o ângulo do plano mandibular e a distância entre os lábios superior e inferior (p=0,048), a projeção do lábio superior e do inferior (p<0,001), a projeção do lábio inferior e do pogônio mole (p<0,001) e a projeção do pogônio e do pogônio mole (p=0,005). As principais correlações negativas estatisticamente significantes foram encontradas entre a projeção da maxila e a projeção do pogônio mole (p=0,044), entre a projeção do lábio inferior e a distância entre os lábios superior e inferior (p=0,002), e entre a distância entre os lábios superior e inferior e a projeção do pogônio mole (p=0,001).<br>The purpose of this study was to radiographically evaluate subjects with balanced facial profile, using an extracranial reference line. Twenty-five cephalometric radiographs of white male brazilians, with ages between 18 and 33 years, obtained in the oriented natural head position were used. Cephalometric analysis was used to evaluate the nasal projection, lips and the soft pogonion in relation to a vertical line that passes by the subnasal point (SnV), the maxilla and the mandible in relation to the cranial base and the incisors in relation to their bone bases. All variables were submitted to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (P<0,05) and the Shapiro-Wilk (P<0,05) test and it was verified that the sample had a normal distribution. The method error was assessed with intraclass correlation and Dalhbergs formula, showing small errors between measurements. Mean, standard deviation, median, minimum and maximum values were calculated. It was verified that the mean projection of the nose was 17.94 mm forward the subnasal vertical line (SnV), the upper lip was in front of he SnV line by 2.20 mm, the lower lip was behind the SnV line by -0.24 mm and the soft tissue pogonion was behind the SnV line by -5.95 mm. The mean values of the maxilla and the mandible in relation to the cranial base were 84.800 and 82.820 respectively. The mean values of upper and lower incisors axial inclinations were 25.870 and 27.220 respectively. Correlation among the variables was assessed using Pearsons correlation coefficient (P<0.05). The main statistically significant positive correlations were observed between the mandibular plane angle and the distance between upper and lower lip (p=0.048), the upper and lower lip projection (p<0.001), the lower lip projection and soft tissue pogonion (p=0.005). The main statistically significant negative correlations were observed between the maxillary projection and the pogonion projection (p=0.044), between lower lip projection and the distance between upper and lower lip (p=0,002), and between the distance between upper and lower lip and soft tissue pogonion projection (p=0.001).

Introdução: Em virtude da miscigenação populacional que ocorre no Brasil, os diferentes grupos étnicos podem apresentar estruturas esqueléticas craniofaciais e tegumentares distintas. Nesse sentido, estudos devem ser estabelecidos para suportar o diagnóstico e facilitar o plano de tratamento entre as diferentes raças e seus diferentes padrões de miscigenação. Objetivo: Determinar os valores médios de normalidade das grandezas cefalométricas tegumentares e esqueléticas de jovens brasileiros mestiços nipo-brasileiros, com oclusão normal descendentes de japoneses e brasileiros e comparar os resultados das variáveis com amostras compatíveis de jovens brasileiros leucodermas e xantodermas. Material e Métodos: Foram utilizadas 40 telerradiografias de jovens leucodermas, 32 de nipo-brasileiros e 33 de xantodermas. As três amostras apresentavam indivíduos com oclusão normal e face bem balanceada. Devido às características do tecido mole e para facilitar a comparação, as amostras foram divididas por gênero. Foram realizados os testes estatísticos: análise de variância a um critério (ANOVA), teste t e a análise de covariância (ANCOVA). Resultados: Encontrou-se diferença estatística (p<0,05) entre as três raças em 17 variáveis para o gênero feminino e 15 para o gênero masculino. Essas variáveis evidenciaram menor espessura na região do násio; menor nariz e biprotrusão labial para as meninas nipobrasileiras em relação aos leucodermas e maior espessura na região da glabela; menor espessura na região do násio; maior espessura do lábio inferior e da região supramentoniana e padrão esquelético facial mais vertical para os meninos nipobrasileiros. Conclusão: As meninas nipo-brasileiras apresentaram características mais similares com a amostra xantoderma e os meninos nipo-brasileiros apresentaram valores numericamente intermediários, com algumas variáveis com maior similaridade com os leucodermas e outras com os xantodermas. Conseqüentemente fica evidente que essa raça miscigenada necessita de normas de tecido mole específicas.<br>Introduction: Remaining the diverse population in Brazil, the different ethnic groups can present unique skeletal and soft tissue measurements. Studies must be established to support orthodontics diagnostic and treatment plans between different races and different standards. Objective: Obtain mean normal values to soft tissue and skeletal cephalometric variables for Japanese-Brazilian and compare the values between Mediterranean, Japanese-Brazilian and Japanese descents. Methods: Cephalometric films were obtained from 40 Mediterranean, 32 Japanese-Brazilian and 33 Japanese adolescents. Only subjects with normal occlusion and well-balanced faces were selected. The variables were separately compared for males and females. ANCOVA, ANOVA and t tests were performed to compare the groups. Results: There were significant differences between the Mediterranean, Japanese-Brazilian and Japanese population in several variables tested for both sexes ( P<.05). The Japanese-Brazilian female have more protrusive lips, smaller nose and smaller nasion thickness when compared to the Caucasian sample and the Japanese-Brazilian male have greater glabellas thickness, smaller nasion thickness, greater lower lips and B point thickness and greater facial convexity. Conclusions: Japanese-Brazilian females showed more similarity characteristics to Japanese sample and males had numerically intermediate values with some variables been more similar to Mediterranean and other with the Japanese. Consequently, Japanese-Brazilian descents need a specific soft tissue standard.
