Resumen
Equilibrium studies have been carried out on complex formation of M2+ ions (M = Ni and Cu) with L = barbituric acid (BA) in aqueous solution at 25.0±0.1°C and with an ionic strength of I=0.10 M (KNO3) in aqueous medium. The basicity of the ligand was also assessed by the determination of the dissociation constants of the ligand. The experimental pH titration data were analyzed with the help of the BEST computer program in order to evaluate the stability constants of the various species formed. The stability constants of the binary systems decrease in the order of Cu(II) > Ni(II). Distribution diagrams for the species were drawn showing the concentrations of individual species as a function of pH by the SPE software program.

Wendt, N. Rodney. "Applications of program understanding and rule-based quality assurance to Slam II simulation programs". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6893.

Texto completo
Resumen
With the advance of time, our inventory of simulation programs has and continues to accumulate. To maximize the return on our investment of time and money into these software systems, it is advantageous for us to reuse software components as much as possible. For example, previously engineered simulation models can often be reused and exercised under a new set of experimental conditions. Before a software component can be reused, the analyst must learn and understand its functionality. This learning process is often made unnecessarily difficult due to incomplete documentation. Another contributing factor is the complexity brought about by interacting directly with the program code. Furthermore, when it comes time to make updates to the code, the potential arises for semantic and syntactic errors to work their way into the program. Knowledge-based program understanding systems with built in quality assurance can be used as an environment for simplifying the learning and the update processes, while ensuring an acceptable degree of quality has been maintained during the update process. This thesis discusses program understanding and quality assurance issues related to the Slam II programming language and discusses the architecture of E/Slam (Elucidation of Slam II programs). E/Slam is a knowledge-based program understanding system with built-in quality assurance ability.

Resumen
This thesis presents an implementation of the model base concept in SIMSCRIPT II.5. It shows two principles in designing a flexible general simulation system. First of all, the input and output port intercommunication and synchronization should be done by an I/O coupling scheme, i.e. a coordinator. Second, every input port should be a separate file in the model base. Users can retrieve these files to couple them together and evaluate the simulation run. A well-designed computer network model base is shown through several examples. It will help the computer network system design to be done in a modular, hierarchical, coordinated fashion.

Resumen
M.Ing. (Transportation)
This reseach focused on a quick response transportation planning software package called QRS II which was developed by A J Horowitz at the Centre for Urban Transportation Studies, University of Wisconsin, United states of America. The programme achieves its quick response by incorporating, inter alia, a large number of default parameters within its formulation. Several of these parameters define the typical travel characteristics of the population within a study area and as such, suggest a particular socioeconomic, political, cultural and behavioral profile as existing in that area. These typical conditions may be representative of the behavior in many areas in the United States but may not adequately reflect conditions beyond that. This study has set out to determine whether the default parameters used in QRS II are different to those that would be appropriate in Black towns in areas such as the East Rand Metropolitan Transport Area (ORMET) in South Africa. Local parameter values were identified and compared with the default values in QRS II. It was found that these values were significantly different. More research is required before QRS II can be considered fully adapted to conditions in Black urban areas within a Metropolitan area such as ORMET. However, the new values suggested in this study will go a long way to improving the appropriateness of QRS II applications in South Africa.

Resumen
AbstractProgram synthesis is now a reality, and we are approaching the point where domain-specific synthesizers can now handle problems of practical sizes. Moreover, some of these tools are finding adoption in industry. However, for synthesis to become a mainstream technique adopted at large by programmers as well as by end-users, we need to design programmable synthesis frameworks that (i) are not tailored to specific domains or languages, (ii) enable one to specify synthesis problems with a variety of qualitative and quantitative objectives in mind, and (iii) come equipped with theoretical as well as practical guarantees. We report on our work on designing such frameworks and on building synthesis engines that can handle program-synthesis problems describable in such frameworks, and describe open challenges and opportunities.

Texto completo
Resumen
Solar thermal energy has been shown to be a viable alternative resource. At this time, the concentrating solar power systems costs are 13–17 cents/kWh. The goal of DOE is to reduce the cost to 5 cents/kWh by 2015 using energy storage techniques. Several storage schemes and materials have been developed over the past two decades. Concrete is an inexpensive storage medium for sensible heat. Research has been done lately using concrete blocks which are heated up by circulating synthetic oil at a maximum temperature of 390 °C through a series of pipes embedded in the concrete. However, the efficiency of the storage unit can be improved by increasing the operating temperature, which is in turn limited by the materials used. A 3-D finite element computer model was written in order to perform parametric studies during the thermal charging and discharging of concrete. The program allows modifying the physical properties of the heat transfer fluid and storage material. A feature to add fins attached to the flow line was developed to evaluate improvements in heat transfer. Several fin configurations were studied. The increase in energy stored in the system, and the corresponding cost increase are reported.

Resumen
I have adapted a program reported earlier1 for tracing rays through conic surfaces for the Macintosh Basic over 2.0. As in the previous program for the Apple II, ray tracing is accomplished by solving the 3-D simultaneous equations for the ray and the surface. Thus skew rays and rays out of the plane of observation can be accommodated. Input has been simplified by use of the Macintosh features and menus. Plotted surfaces and rays are shown on the screen and printer. A demonstration of the program is given.

Texto completo
Resumen
Part I of this paper presents a method and a computer program for the mean design of multistage axial compressors. This second part describes a method and an additional computer routine that use the basic mean line design to create a fully two-dimensional flow solution and a compressor design. The two-dimensional solution according to a selected swirl vortex function is calculated using streamline curvature throughflow equations and spanwise distribution of losses. An iterative calculation procedure slightly reshapes the initial flow path in order to retain the desired input flow coefficients. Other variables such as stage loading parameters are changed in order to obtain the desired overall pressure ratio. A spanwise distribution of certain stage parameters can then be adjusted to achieve desired radial flow field variations. The basic one-dimensional input data can be varied at any moment to obtain a new one-dimensional result and the corresponding two-dimensional solution. A new output is created instantaneously and can be used for further CFD analysis, external throughflow, blade-to-blade flow computations or mechanical and vibration analysis.

Resumen
Abstract One of the most effective transportation systems especially for bulk materials is continuous conveyors. They enable to transport materials quickly, economically and with rather simple means of handling. On the other hand for transportation needs involving steep grades and elevations, bucket type elevators are suitable especially for granular materials. In this study a computer program has been developed in order to provide a computer aided design tool for both bucket type elevators and belt conveyors. Operation of the program is interactive. Thus, some critical decisions during the design can be made by the designer, himself. The program has been written in BASIC programming language for Macintosh Plus personal computers. It can be also used in Macintosh II computers. The computer program standardizes all design results and the design conforms the relevant TSE, DIN and ISO standards. All standard tables used in the program, are available in the database. The database can be easily edited and updated. A design report can also be obtained at the end of the design as well as the screen output of the design session.

Resumen
This report is one of a series of reports documenting the methods and findings of a multi-year, multi-disciplinary project coordinated by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER and funded by the California Earthquake Authority (CEA). The overall project is titled “Quantifying the Performance of Retrofit of Cripple Walls and Sill Anchorage in Single-Family Wood-Frame Buildings,” henceforth referred to as the “PEER–CEA Project.” The overall objective of the PEER–CEA Project is to provide scientifically based information (e.g., testing, analysis, and resulting loss models) that measure and assess the effectiveness of seismic retrofit to reduce the risk of damage and associated losses (repair costs) of wood-frame houses with cripple wall and sill anchorage deficiencies as well as retrofitted conditions that address those deficiencies. Tasks that support and inform the loss-modeling effort are: (1) collecting and summarizing existing information and results of previous research on the performance of wood-frame houses; (2) identifying construction features to characterize alternative variants of wood-frame houses; (3) characterizing earthquake hazard and ground motions at representative sites in California; (4) developing cyclic loading protocols and conducting laboratory tests of cripple wall panels, wood-frame wall subassemblies, and sill anchorages to measure and document their response (strength and stiffness) under cyclic loading; and (5) the computer modeling, simulations, and the development of loss models as informed by a workshop with claims adjustors. This report is a product of Working Group 4 (WG4): Testing, whose central focus was to experimentally investigate the seismic performance of retrofitted and existing cripple walls. This report focuses stucco or “wet” exterior finishes. Paralleled by a large-component test program conducted at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) [Cobeen et al. 2020], the present study involves two of multiple phases of small-component tests conducted at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego). Details representative of era-specific construction, specifically the most vulnerable pre-1960s construction, are of predominant focus in the present effort. Parameters examined are cripple wall height, finish style, gravity load, boundary conditions, anchorage, and deterioration. This report addresses the third phase of testing, which consisted of eight specimens, as well as half of the fourth phase of testing, which consisted of six specimens where three will be discussed. Although conducted in different phases, their results are combined here to co-locate observations regarding the behavior of the second phase the wet (stucco) finished specimens. The results of first phase of wet specimen tests were presented in Schiller et al. [2020(a)]. Experiments involved imposition of combined vertical loading and quasi-static reversed cyclic lateral load onto ten cripple walls of 12 ft long and 2 or 6 ft high. One cripple wall was tested with a monotonic loading protocol. All specimens in this report were constructed with the same boundary conditions on the top and corners of the walls as well as being tested with the same vertical load. Parameters addressed in this report include: wet exterior finishes (stucco over framing, stucco over horizontal lumber sheathing, and stucco over diagonal lumber sheathing), cripple wall height, loading protocol, anchorage condition, boundary condition at the bottom of the walls, and the retrofitted condition. Details of the test specimens, testing protocol, including instrumentation; and measured as well as physical observations are summarized in this report. Companion reports present phases of the tests considering, amongst other variables, impacts of various boundary conditions, stucco (wet) and non-stucco (dry) finishes, vertical load, cripple wall height, and anchorage condition. Results from these experiments are intended to support advancement of numerical modeling tools, which ultimately will inform seismic loss models capable of quantifying the reduction of loss achieved by applying state-of-practice retrofit methods as identified in FEMA P-1100,Vulnerability-Base Seismic Assessment and Retrofit of One- and Two-Family Dwellings.
