Resumen
The history of pre-Lent celebrations is traced through the presentation, comparison, and evaluation of the main theses of origin held by Shrovetide and Carnival scholars. It is determined that the question whether the festivals are of pagan or Christian origin is not important for the analysis of their present-day significance. Their vitality stems first of all from the general importance of celebration for humans to define themselves in a setting in which they can perform, act, and behave in non-traditional ways that cannot be transferred to everyday life. However, the festivals' uniqueness can be defined through two main characteristics: (I) the establishment of fools' or mock-governments and the ritual dismissal of the local authorities, and (2) the use of elaborate masks and costumes. Masks and costumes not only facilitate new contacts with other, particularly non-masked, members of one's community, no matter to which social level they belong; they also allow people to freely parody and thus criticize their society's political, social, and moral order, without having to suffer consequences. Although considered to be anarchic by their critics, pre-Lent celebrations actually reflect the everyday world, which they need as a background on which to stage their distinct nature. The actors, give up their performance after the reenter their routine lives they often take with them a without special equality, which they may use within interactions. called "fools," willingly festive period and misgivings. However, feeling of democracy and their everyday social interactions. The results of fieldwork done in Southwest Germany (the area of the Swabian -Alemannic Shrovetide) are reflected throughout the study. Forty-nine black-and-white photographs as well as a map give a visual impression of Shrovetide in Germany.

Hilbers, Julieanne. "Celebrations for personal and collective health and wellbeing". University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Education, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/354.

Resumen
Celebrations are pervasive. At a personal level they include birthdays, funerals, weddings, get-togethers, award ceremonies, and parties organised for any number of reasons. At a community level they include faith-based services, public holidays, commemorations and community festivals. These are just a selection. I argue that there is a need to better understand what role celebrations can play to improve health and wellbeing and not just for individuals but for communities. In this thesis I examine the experiences, context, processes and politics of celebrations and how they contribute to both personal and collective health and wellbeing. Of course, some celebrations make a more meaningful contribution than others. And it is the nature of that difference I seek to understand. The two leading research questions I address are: • How do celebrations contribute to personal and collective health and wellbeing? • What is ‘healthy’ celebration practice? There are three sections in this thesis. In the first I describe and discuss the Australian context of celebration activities. I also explore definitions of celebrations. I consider celebrations to be an active process made up of both play and ritual. Celebrations seek to focus people’s attention, and intention, in a positive way. The resulting celebratory act(s) are a cultural expression of what a particular individual or community values. There are a diversity of celebration forms and practices - open, spontaneous, planned and formal. Each celebration is influenced by, and influences, the context in which it occurs. I will be focusing on celebrations occurring within a community context. A community may be a family, an organization, local community, shared interest group or a whole of society grouping. In the second section of the thesis I analyse the relationship of celebrations to various dimensions of health and wellbeing. These dimensions include: social connectedness, identity, transitions and lifespan development, and community capacity. A major part of my fieldwork was undertaken in Victoria where I studied 20 community celebrations. The community celebrations I examined in varying degrees, did positively contribute to personal and collective wellbeing. They did so because they included positive and personally meaningful activities. They explored identity. Celebrations played a role in supporting transitions leading to ongoing healthy development. They provided opportunities for learning; not just knowledge but allowed values to be explored and skills and resources to be gained. They brought people together to interact and fostered a sense of belonging. Celebrations that were health enhancing valued diversity but also explored what unites people. My research confirmed that celebrations can foster our connections; to ourselves, others, the earth, time and the spiritual. They can build relationships between individuals, groups and organizations. They can be spaces that allow for personal and collective healing. But the degree to which these positive dimensions can be achieved depends on the nature or quality of the celebration practice. And it is the practice of planning and facilitating celebrations that is the focus of the third section of the thesis. Some celebration practices are health enhancing while others are not. Celebrations can be an opportunity to explore not just ourselves but our communities and how they oppress particular individuals and groups. Many contemporary celebrations do not feel authentic or resonate with people. They often remain at the surface and focus on passive forms of entertainment and the consumption of goods. Deeper engagement can be facilitated through more participatory and creative activities such as dance, playing music, story -making and -telling and ritual; particularly when engaged in with conscious intention. Celebrations at the individual level can be a positive, affirming experience that is personally meaningful and enables people to move towards their potential. At a collective level they build relationships between the individual, groups and places. They highlight the interconnectedness between all things. And as such they are an integral part of community life. I conclude by presenting an analytical framework to help understand the nature of celebration practice that is less or more likely to facilitate health and wellbeing. I try to adopt the viewpoint of a practitioner interested in the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. I anticipate this knowledge will stimulate discussion particularly within the health and community sector about how celebration practice can be integrated into the work of health professionals and community workers.

Resumen
This descriptive study was designed to be an in-depth, ethnographic study of an after-school Writers Club that had been part of the fabric of a metropolitan area elementary schoolâ s culture for 12 years. The purpose of this research was to learn more about meaning-based pedagogy by examining Writers Club and the activities conducted within it with a focus on reading aloud. As the narrowing focus on skill and drill practices that are a by product of high stakes testing continues to grab time, attention, and headlines, educators and policymakers deserve access to examples of more meaning-based pedagogy in actual contexts. This research was focused on the activities that occurred during club meetings as well as on the meanings that participants of the club made concerning those activities, particularly as they related to the embedded read alouds. Revealed through the voices of selected participants, Writers Club proved to be a venue for read aloud events that built upon the reading/writing connection and served to allow children to develop as writers amongst a community that included adults as well as peers.

Steele, R. "The 2500th Anniversary Celebrations and cultural politics in Late Pahlavi Iran". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/35230.

Resumen
This thesis presents a thorough investigation of the 2500th Anniversary Celebrations of the Founding of the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great, held in Persepolis by the Shah of Iran in 1971. Since the time of the Celebrations they have been routinely demonised by historians and critics of the Pahlavi regime, who present them as evidence of the delusion and megalomania of an Oriental despot. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a more sober, balanced account of the events of 1971 and the preparations leading up to them, in order to understand more fully the aims and motivations of the Shah and his entourage in organising such a nationalist spectacle. It will argue that Iran benefitted greatly from the international exposure the event generated, politically, economically and culturally. Most accounts of the Celebrations have focussed primarily on the sumptuous Pahlavi hospitality, enjoyed by the world’s elite over the course of a few days in purpose-built accommodation at Persepolis, the former ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid dynasty. In contrast, the premise of this thesis is that the ceremonies at Persepolis and Pasargadae were just a small, albeit highly visible, part of the programme for the Celebrations. From the time the Celebrations were conceived in the late 1950s, exhibitions were organised, publications commissioned and buildings constructed. All were intended to contribute to the development and modernisation of Iran, and all were conceived with the Anniversary Celebrations in mind. Internationally too, the Celebrations aroused great interest. Hundreds of books and articles were published in conjunction with the event, and museum exhibitions, academic conferences and other special cultural events were organised around the world, giving an important boost to the field of Persian studies worldwide. Meanwhile, the Shah’s Iran was presented as a significant regional and global power. This thesis will contribute, therefore, to our understanding of the Celebrations, and more broadly the material effects of the politicisation of culture in the late Pahlavi period.

Boisvert, Donald Luc. "Religion and nationalism in Quebec: The Saint-Jean-Baptiste celebrations in sociological perspective". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/5570.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis is a sociological study of la Fete de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Quebec, from its beginnings until the present. It argues that la Fete was a stage for the express-sion and unification of three sets of polarities found within Quebec society: nationalism vs. religion, the elite vs. the masses, and popular religiosity vs. clerical authority. Its five chapters can be divided into three general parts: the historical (Chapters I, II and III), the theoretical (Chapter IV) and the analytical (Chapter V). The Introduction, in addition to summarizing the contents of the thesis, briefly discusses some major theoretical contributions to the sociology of religion and the rapport between religion and the feast. Chapter I is a review of the relationship between the Catholic Church and Quebec society. This is meant to provide the basic foundation for subsequent analyses. The history of Quebec Catholicism is considered in terms of the customary breakdown: New France, post-Conquest, ultramontanism and the Quiet Revolution. Particular attention is paid, in this chapter, to the manner in which the Church had an impact upon structures of belief, both religious and secular. The next two chapters deal specifically with the celebrations and the group with which they are most often associated. Chapter II discusses la Fete itself, both in terms of its history and its symbolic and ritualistic components. The celebrations are analyzed on the basis of three historical periods: the Patriotes, ultramontanism or the period of clerical domination, and the Quiet Revolution and its aftermath. Chapter III takes a look at the Societe Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montreal, not so much in terms of its detailed history as its ideological profile and influence. Chapter IV concentrates on examining the central theoretical concepts which run throughout the thesis: nationalism, ideology, class, secularization and popular religion. In the last two sections of this chapter, a sociological perspective on the notion of the feast is suggested, and the three sets of polarities are introduced. The concluding chapter, Chapter V, attempts a systematic analysis of the polarities, as these were reflected during each of the three historical periods associated with la Fete. There is a brief discussion of rituals in the opening pages. The formal Conclusion to the thesis summarizes the central arguments, in the context of some of the themes introduced earlier. An appendix discusses three topics in greater detail: participation rates in the public gatherings, other associations spawned by the Societe, and membership figures.

The royal celebrations held in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the eighteenth century, as much as their written narratives, are the theme of this thesis. The first part describes these events and their connections with similar festive manifestations in other cities of the Portuguese empire in the atlantic world during the same period, especially Lisbon and Luanda. These festive pratices in homage to the Portuguese king are analyzed not to stress some type of homogeneity among them, but rather to seek the specific ways they expressed patterns and codes common to the Portuguese empire expressed not only in the celebrations themselves, but also in the narratives produces about them, called the Relações de Festas, written to articulate a certain memory about the monarchy and Empire. In turn, the second part contains a reflection on the way in which these patterns help shed light on three festive situations in the colonial city of Rio de Janeiro: the celebrations in 1762 of the birth of the Príncipe da Beira (heir apparent to the throne); the commemorations of the marriage of king João VI and Carlota Joaquina in 1782; and the celebrations of the birth of Prince Antônio in 1795. By trying to undestand the logic of each of these festive pratices, identifying individuals and groups that took part in them, I highlight the dynamics of the social relations in Rio de Janeiro in the period, to indicate how the different groups dramatized the festivities and claimed their place within the Portuguese empire.

Guidicini, Giovanna. "Scotland triumphant : the relevance of Stewart triumphal celebrations in shaping Scottish Renaissance architecture". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8725.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis discusses Scottish triumphal entries, and Scottish triumphal culture in general, and aims to advance understanding of the local application of Renaissance ideas, in relation to art and architecture. Triumphal language represented a strongly unifying element in XVI century European culture. Through temporary architecture, decorations, and entertainments, many sovereigns showed visually to a local and international audience their increasing power, legitimate rule, personal qualities, and ambitions. Urban entries also represented an important moment of dialogue with the local authorities of the city hosting the triumph, who would have used this unique opportunity to communicate with the ruler, presenting issues, asking for help, or offering advice. Although the importance of triumphal language has been recognized with regard to Europe, the use of triumphal language in Scotland and by the Stewart monarchs has been only marginally considered: in particular, each entry has been considered separately, and not in connection with each other, with their architectural setting –the city- or as a source of inspiration for permanent architecture. This thesis will show how local triumphal entries and ceremonies can be used to analyze the development of Scottish culture during the Renaissance. Some of the topics treated will be, the imperial aspiration and increasingly absolutist ideas of the Stewarts, the surfacing of religious issues and the uneasy coexistence of different creeds, and the increasing interest in classical language in and beyond the court. This thesis will reinforce the connection between the Scottish Renaissance and the European Renaissance, Italian in particular, showing how many aspects of Scottish architecture of the time can be interpreted not as surprising, isolated expression of taste, but as consequences or related facts to the spectacularization of life of which triumphal culture was a politicized, dynastical expression. Two of James V’s main architectural enterprises, the refashioning of Linlithgow Palace with the creation of a fountain in the central courtyard, and the elaborated stone decoration created for Stirling Castle, will be shown as derivations and expression of international triumphal culture. The perfect king and queen represented through them, presiding over a perfect court, are similar to the idealized figures presented to the crowd during a triumphal entry, and can be connected with foreign sources of inspiration, particularly French, Italian, and German. Outdoor spaces like the garden of Edzell Castle will be interpreted as the permanent, private recreation of the controllable, perfect world created through triumphal entries, inspired by triumphal decoration and foreign designs. The messages delivered through the decorations also reflected the usual admonitions to an entering queen, and the politicized messages suitable to a ruler of international prestige. The city of Edinburgh will be analyzed in its role as a stage and a protagonist of Stewart royal entries in the period 1503-1636. As an active character, it will pose limits and offer opportunities through its very geological conformation and the positioning of its main buildings. As a stage, it was endowed with timber settings, the Piazzas and upper promenades, where and from where the spectacle of everyday life could be performed and enjoyed. An artificially tamed natural landscape was also granted temporary access, showing with its presence the ruler’s control upon the forces of the world which he can evoke and govern at will, creating a perfectly balanced, renewed cosmos.

Pearson, Danielle. "The trials, tribulations, and celebrations of younger LGB couples in long-term relationships". Thesis, Open University, 2015. http://oro.open.ac.uk/52262/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis explores the long-term relationship experiences of younger LGB couples. It builds upon existing knowledge and understandings of LGB couple relationships and the lives of younger adults. The study utilised multiple qualitative methods informed by social science research on intimate relationships whilst appraising the biographical, socio-cultural, and temporal contexts within which LGB couple relationship experiences are situated. The research highlights the importance of attending to how couples ‘do’ their relationships as well as the ‘practices’ which sustain them. Findings emphasise the interconnected dimensions of time, space, and intimacy as resources for sustaining couple relationships, with analysis underlining the role of the ‘relational present’ as a lens for understanding everyday relationship experiences. It provides insight into how couples negotiate their everyday lives through relationship work, to facilitate connection, and to maintain and cultivate personal autonomy alongside their couple identity. The temporal horizons of the past and the future inform relationship experiences in different ways, increasing understanding of relating behaviours and signifying a commitment to a shared future. Such futures included marriage/civil partnership, children, and buying homes. Experiences were embedded in the context of participant biography, the wider relationships and communities of the couple, and the current zeitgeist of increased acceptance and civil rights for LGB individuals in the UK. The thesis concludes by discussing the findings in terms of age, reciprocity, relationship resources, and gender.

The abolition of slavery signed in the Court on May 13th, 1888 was the beginning of a series of public celebrations ended only on May 21st, 1888. Among spontaneous celebrations of people who occupied the Palace Square (Largo do Paço) and other places in the city and the celebrations organized by the local press, the freedom was celebrated by several characters: literates, journalists, public employees, commerce workers, typographers and ex-slaves, all together under the cause of the same celebration. Considering such diversity of people celebrating the abolition, the present work aims to search in the May 13th celebration the dispute process of its senses and meanings. In addition, this work simultaneously tracks the period from 1888 to 1908 to identify the re-elaboration process of the memories related to the abolition celebration in order to try to understand the symbolic force of the event for many of its participants and also the ways that led to its lack of meaning the subsequent years.

Clarke, Steven Warren. "Environmental and Dispositional Factors Related to College Students' Alcohol Consumption during Twenty-First Birthday Celebrations". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27653.

Texto completo
Resumen
Three studies were conducted to investigate dispositional and environmental factors related to alcohol consumption during 21st birthday celebrations, and test an internet-based intervention designed to reduce alcohol consumption during 21st birthday celebrations (21BDCs). Results of Study 1 indicated the majority of alcoholic beverages (79.3%) are consumed rapidly. Rapid consumption was positively related to drinking history and normative perceptions, and negatively related to perceptions of behavioral control. The relation between sociocultural beliefs and rapid consumption are mediated by normative perceptions and perceptions of behavioral control. The major objectives of Study 2 were to explore: a) 21BDC planning behaviors and the physical and social 21BDC environment, b) the relation between intoxication and planning behaviors, celebratory behaviors, and the 21BDC environment, and c) the frequency of various alcohol-related negative outcomes. Results indicate 26.4% of the participants exceeded an eBAL of .26. Intoxication during 21BDCs is enabled by the availability of free drinks, and having a friend to look after oneself or monitor alcohol consumption does not lead to lower levels of intoxication. The most frequent negative outcomes were hangovers, blackouts and vomiting, with 50% of celebrants experiencing at least one of these outcomes. Study 3 tested a web-based intervention designed to reduce intoxication and negative outcomes during 21BDCs. The intervention was implemented four weeks before the 21st birthday, was designed to: a) change perceptions of drinking norms during 21st birthday celebrations, b) increase perceptions of behavioral control over alcohol consumption, and c) counter social pressures to consumer alcohol during the weeks leading up to the celebration. Results indicated no significant reductions in number of alcoholic beverages consumed, intoxication or negative outcomes, as compared to a traditional 21st birthday card intervention and no-intervention controls. While students were not motivated to implement many of the suggested harm-reduction strategies, there was a significant increase in the consumption of food and non-alcoholic beverages among participants receiving the web-based intervention. Development and implementation of effective interventions to reduce intoxication during 21BDC remains a significant challenge.

Resumen
Inca rule in the Southern Andes was based on the simultaneous management of military control, ideology and ceremonial hospitality. Food and public celebrations were essential both to the emergence of social hierarchies and to the negotiation of power by building alliances and reciprocity relationships. In Northwest Argentina, Inca administration was exercised through the direct government of key locations. In order to approach micropolitical processes developed in some temperate valleys of NOA under Inca rule we intend to know the importance that feasts or ceremonies held for state elites by creating social limits through the consumption of special food and distinct ceramic shapes. To that end, the Inca state invested energy in widening agricultural fields as an strategy of production and administration of goods and services through the domination of the productive space, which was appropriated by the Inca through the previous relationship between pukara-ancestors-chacras-small farms-fertility.

This thesis explores the factors affecting the production of Russian and Soviet song inspired by the lyrics of Pushkin. In so doing, it emphasises three influences which have been alluded to in previous scholarship, but little explored: the songs of Pushkin's time, major Pushkin anniversary celebrations, and the 'public image' of Pushkin, cultivated primarily through the celebrations. These celebrations, and their cultural-political context, are used as a primary touchstone in a quantitative survey of song production. Part One covers the Imperial era, which established the principles on which the development of Pushkin song would be predicated: the song forms of the romance, the folk-inspired russkaia pesnia and the choral cantata; and the inauguration of state-organised mass Pushkin celebrations. Part Two considers the Stalinist era and the attempted cultivation of the 'Soviet romance', based on texts reflecting the Soviet image of Pushkin as a freedom-loving revolutionary and 'people's poet'. It explores the demands on Push kin song exacted by the campaigns of lhdanovshchina and the requirements of cultural conformity. Part Three, covering the late- and post-Soviet era, explores the attempted 'deconstruction' of the traditional romance aesthetic, and argues that this period prompted the production of some of the most diverse and innovative Pushkin songs yet seen. But it also argues that, whilst the most recent Pushkin celebration in 1999 provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the rich history of Pushkin song, it also marked the end of the genre's development. The thesis will suggest that the ubiquitous influence of Push kin-era romances, and those of Glinka in particular, has made them the archetype of Pushkin song. Moreover, it will argue that the combined influence of these early romances, the conformity imposed by the celebrations, and the constraining effect of images of Push kin, have fostered an indelible association between Pushkin song and creative conservatism.

Resumen
Over the past decade, the United Kingdom has witnessed a proliferation of civil-military initiatives that have engendered overt and celebratory displays of support for the British Armed Forces. This thesis interrogates two of these initiatives: the annual public relations event Armed Forces Day and the military charity Help for Heroes. Significantly, these initiatives have emerged against a backdrop of morally and politically contentious military violence, notably in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hence, these initiatives raise important questions about the type of politics which underwrite them. In this thesis, I address these questions by critically engaging with a figure who occupies a key position within this UK civil-military landscape: the professional soldier. Adopting a Foucauldian approach, I place this figure within a broader political, social and historical context and show how, since the end of the Second World War, the professional soldier has continually remerged to rewrite the conditions of possibility for liberal war-fighting. Drawing on this insight, I identify a professional soldier, I label the biopolitical military professional, who greatly informs the contours of this contemporary UK civil-military landscape. The biopolitical military professional is an important figure because they are able to co-opt "civilian" political subjects into the service of liberal-warfighting despite a conflict's political context. This is made possible because the biopolitical military professional is a figure who incorporates their military expertise and professional concerns within a wider set of life-administering knowledges concerned with the health and well-being of the population. Crucially, the most overt expressions of biopolitical military professionalism are produced through these UK civil-military initiatives. I demonstrate this by showing how these initiatives mobilise a whole host of "civilian" proto-professional subjects into the active service of liberal war-fighting through an appeal to both their military "obligations" and their fitness and wellbeing. An effect of this is that participating in one of these initiatives becomes more than an act of military support it also becomes a way of partaking in a healthy and life-enriching activity. For example, a day out at Armed Forces Day is a way to get children to take part in active play and educational activities. Supporting the armed forces through Help for Heroes may involve running a marathon or taking part in a long-distance cycle ride. Consequently, via the presence of the biopolitical military professional these initiatives achieve a certain resonance with a civilian population disinterested in the politics of war but increasingly concerned with their health and wellbeing.

Discourses about the construction of identity, the politics of identity, and the role of design in controlling human behavior and expressing power have thus far been confined to separate realms of inquiry. This thesis will examine where these discourses intersect and how their intersection plays out in society as old conceptions of race and identity are challenged by demographic shifts and new immigrant populations. Festivals, as spatial expressions of identity that image city spaces, provide an important perspective on this topic. Philadelphia, as a former capital city that continues to struggle with race and identity in its politics, acts as a compelling backdrop for my case studies. The Mummers Parade and the Odunde Festival are two New Year's celebrations that mediate racial/political and ethnic/cultural identities for the city's white and black populations respectively. This thesis considers both festivals from their historical context and compares their current form in terms of spatial and non-spatial indicators (route, demographics, funding, and organizational structure). From this analytic framework emerges a picture of how political identities are constructed spatially, how the process of identity construction both challenges and reinforces the dominant political structure, and how the process can bridge political differences and maintain them.

Resumen
Framed within a society where many Swedes consider themselves to be semi-secular, where by law schools and preschools shall be nondenominational; a paradox occurs if many preschools acknowledge celebrations and traditions of historically Christian background exclusively. Previous research has suggested potential reasons for uncertainty with regard to including celebrations and traditions with a historically religious background. Building off of that research this case study attempts to approach a more definitive answer regarding the decision process behind deciding which celebrations and traditions are included, and therefore which are excluded, from the local curriculum. Using qualitative and quantitative data, this case study is designed to answer two questions. First, ‘what specific factors are considered when an educator decides which traditions and celebrations s/he includes in the local curriculum?’; concluding that the preschool’s administration, an educator’s particular group of children, and an educator’s personal knowledge are the three specific factors considered when an educator decides which traditions and celebrations to be included in the local curriculum. Second, ‘how does an educator take cultural celebrations and traditions into consideration when designing the curriculum for the classrooms?’, further concluding that an educator takes cultural celebrations and traditions into consideration via conversation with their collegial group, recalling previous positive experiences, and active decision making. From these six factors which affect curriculum content regarding celebrations and traditions; the preschool’s administration, an educator’s particular group of children, an educator’s personal knowledge, collegial discussion, previous experiences, and active decision making, three main factors have been identified from the overlapping nature of the six factors. Summarily, this study concludes that the three factors that affect curriculum content regarding celebrations and traditions are administration, group, and knowledge. Where an educator’s group and an educator’s knowledge can be applied as a situation necessitates from two perspectives each. Where an educators group can be seen from a collegial perspective or from the perspective of the educator’s group of children. Finally, an educator’s knowledge can be divided into their personal knowledge and their previous theoretical knowledge.

Resumen
More and more preschools are choosing to reduce the sugar consumption. The reason is, inter alia, the increase of weight in the community, but there is also research showing that sugar is harmful to children. The discussions on sugar and children are also a hot media topic. I have chosen to use a qualitative method, interviews, to gather material for the essay. I have interviewed a teacher and a cook in three different preschools, in different municipalities. I have also looked at their various nutrition policies to see how the guidelines for their work on diet and health look like. I have been inspired by Vygotskys socio-cultural perspective on learning which broadly means that we learn in social contexts and communicative processes is central to the socio-cultural perspective. Furthermore, interest in how individuals and groups acquire and utilize physical and cognitive resources and the interplay between collective and individual focus. The purpose of this paper is to find out why the surveyed preschools are working to reduce the amount of sugar served. Furthermore, the purpose of this paper is to show how the preschools where I interviewed my informants work with diet and health and find out what their attitudes to sugar and what they want to convey to the children and their families. My questions are: What's behind the decision to decrease sugar intake of the investigated preschools and what was the process like? What thoughts the staff at the preschool have about the role of sugar, for everyday and festive? How do the preschools work with diet and health and why do they work in that way? My conclusions are that it was the municipality who decided that preschools would work to reduce the amount of sugar and convey a healthy lifestyle. Their theory was that the decision was made because there was much talk about sugar's effects on health in the media and that a lot of research in this area was presented. The preschools had been quick to embrace the new guidelines and were in favour. They started with measures like thinking about what snacks they served the children and to get them used to eating non-sweetened food. They did, however, agree that the sugar would not be banned completely but they wanted to show that it was good to eat in moderation and at certain times. All three preschools served some sweets at major ceremonies, this traditionally include some treats such as gingerbread cookies around Christmas. However, they chose not to celebrate with sweets at the children's birthdays. This was mainly because it would be too often. They also wanted to show the children that when there was a party the focus did not lie on the goodies. Preschool is also an addition to the home and is, together with the parents, responsible for the children to having a balanced energy intake during the day. Therefore, they argued that it was good to be clear about the kids did not consuming too much sugar at the preschool. The parents could then account for that part at home. Some parents initially thought it was sad and strange that they were not allowed to bring sweets for the children's birthdays. But the teachers explained why and as time passed the parents got used to it and they were now very positive. The cooks were more engaged in the topic and found the teachers should work more explicitly and actively talk about sugar and a good diet. The teachers said that they did not want to affect the children given the harsh health and body image conveyed by the media. Instead, they wanted a natural way to be healthy and be good role models themselves. The teachers could be more involved and try to entice children to try new things and oversee what they put on their plates. None of the teachers said that they tried to influence parents to think healthy, but they hoped they would be inspired by the pre-schools work and told them about why they were working on reducing sugar.

Resumen
This thesis analyses the meaning of unity and unification in post-war Italian life through a transnational study of the two great events staged for the celebration of one hundred years of Italian unification: Italia '61 and the Festival of Italy. Held in Turin, Italia '61 was the Italian national celebration and the overall purpose was to put on display the 'progress made in Italy in 100 years of national life' and to make a statement about Italy's place in the Cold War world order. To do so it comprised three major components: a Historical Exhibition, which traced a history of unification focused on the Risorgimento and the Resistance; a Regional Exhibition; and the International Labour Exhibition, which contained displays on work practices and conditions from twenty-one nations and international organisations. Across the Atlantic in Philadelphia, the Festival of Italy was the largest Italian centennial commemoration held outside Italy and it had been planned in conjunction with the Italia '61 organisers and collaboratively with the Italian American community in Philadelphia. The Festival's theme was 'lOO years of Progress' and the corresponding exhibitions and events emphasised the cultural richness of Italy, the high culture of Italy, the contribution of Italy and Italian culture and people to contemporary civilisation and in particular to the U.5., and the modernity of contemporary Italy. This thesis presents the argument that 1961 represents a change or turning point in the way identity was celebrated and so conceived in both Italy and among Italian American communities. The effects of the reconfiguration are identified through analysis of the national, international, intergovernmental, ethnic and transnational relationships in operation at Italia '61 and the Festival of Italy.

This qualitative research analyzes the processes of reproduction and transmission of religious customs carried out by ethnic minorities from Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru settled in the city of Lleida (Catalonia-Spain). These minorities, using ethnic and religious social capital as well as religious and cultural associations, reproduce cyclically religious celebrations under social, symbolic and material structures; a fact wich supports their socialcultural adaptation and the strengthening of family, community and inter-ethnic ties, reaffirming their identity. These actions provide them with a certain subjective, effervescent and collective social well-being temporarily. Furthermore, these custums are transmitted to their descendants through an innovative and creative intergenerational process; although not exempt from resistance and family tensions, meanwhile they adapt to the new country.

This work is linked to the research of Teaching History and Historical understanding of the Graduate Program in History from the Federal University of Paraíba - UFPB, with a major in History and Historical Culture, it aims is to analyze the school parties and civic celebrations in Paraíba during the New State (1937-1945).We seek to emphasize the importance given to the parties that functioned as essential tools in training and dissemination of a national education, patriotic, civic and service of a moralizing estanovismo . From the articles published in the pages of A União newspaper, A Imprensa, Revista do Ensino, as well as in our references, we discuss the social, cultural and civic celebrations that the policies have had on society in Paraiba, because this type of celebration went beyond the school s walls involving also the local community. While in effect, the dictatorial government of Getúlio Vargas and his staff and stakeholders were responsible for some changes in the festival calendar of the schools, this means that besides the existing dates that we selected to work here, as the Day of Fatherland, Day Work, Flag Day and Arbor Day, new holidays have been added, there was then we prefer to call the invention of new traditions, a concept used by Hobsbawm (1997) and adopted by us as a way to better understand how these changes occurred in the civic calendar and festive and cultural life in school. Among these new holidays invented give prominence to the anniversary of Getúlio Vargas (April 19), anniversary of establishment of the New State (Nov. 10), Youth Day (April 19) and Race Day (celebrated in the homeland of the Week). In this scenario of changes and amendments, the big parades have become a constant in Paraíba streets, these streets that at times of celebration, had a euphoric movement of people who thronged the quest to see the students marching in salute of the ideals New State Policy.

Even though perceived as a supra-human entity, the Church is the result of constant and arduous input of individuals who dedicate their time and effort to that purpose. In the Assembleia de Deus church located at the village of Provetá, Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, RJ, this individual effort has been, so far, successful. The development of the village of Provetá is directly associated and concomitant to the growth of the church and its ministerial representatives. The evangelization of the majority of the local dwellers is part of the story of this village. The church Assembleia de Deus of Provetá clearly detains an important and hegemonic role in determining the local life style for, at least, three generations. Its territory is well defined and perceived by locals, as well as by outsiders, as being a religious place where the Pentecostal lifestyle is predominant. This research investigates the groups that constituent the Assembleia de Deus, its religious celebrations and the consequences of the existence of these two characteristics. In other words, these celebrations and their preparation is a form of manifestation of their lifestyle and a valuable opportunity that unable us to understand the routine of these residents. These festivities form a complex venture that assembles the majority of the local community and reveals specific social dimensions. Henceforth, once we can delimitate the way the church inserts itself in the day-to-day activities of its followers, one can understand the interface between religion and community, which is the focus of this case study.

From its proclamation as “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO in 2001, theOruro Carnival is being deeply highlighted. One of its specificities consists in its impressive evolution throughout theHistory, and in its dramatization of the Bolivian society conflicts. This work pretends to study the Carnival’stransformation during the 20 and 21st centuries (1920-2015), considering and understanding the metamorphosis of theOruro Carnival by taking initial postulates in the analysis of some of its most significant challenges and conflicts, aswell as the different interactions with economic, political, social or cultural produced by its historical evolution. The reflection focuses initially on temporary terms of Carnival, organized around a complex grid of events that shapeits schedule. Each moment of the period between the Carnival’s preparation and its development brings a specificdimension to it, allowing the development of relationship between groups, practices or people gathered around a samepolymorphic festivity. The second part aims to present and analyze the multiplication of events and political oreconomic measures that made the Carnival celebration mobilizing a growing number of players, over a century markedby major national historical upheavals. The study of the Carnival’s “physical construction”, around a great number ofspatial markers and equipment, its economic and tourism benefits, or its impact on the regional and national policy, shape this second part around the “concrete” course of Carnival and its historical changes. The third part proposes areflection on the modalities of representation and staging of the orureña and / or Bolivian society through a Carnivalthat reflects or illustrates some of the many transformations of the country during the twentieth century. The Carnivalthen entered a new stage in its history, becoming the theater of national political processes, and crystallizing newissues of representation. This last part also examines conflicts or interactions related to identity, cultural or politicalaffirmation processes, generated by the Carnival, especially since its consecration by UNESCO in May 2001. Thiswork is based on three types of sources. Field observations (in 2012, 2014 and 2015) are supplemented by importantwork of indexing newspaper archives produced by the orureño daily “La Patria”, since its foundation in 1919 untilnow, justifying the temporary terms of the study. Nearly 3.500 articles have been identified and studied to get to abetter understanding of the Carnival history and its impact on the orureña society. The data resulting from theimplementation of two questionnaires dissimilated locally and online (2014 and 2016) with hundreds of Carnivaldancers and participants, completes the journalistic corpus and gives an additional sociological dimension to thereflection. Through these media, this thesis proposes a study of the major issues, interactions and conflicts over theCarnival in the period 1920-2015, in both a synchronic and diachronic approach in order to better understand the scopeand complexity of the Carnival, not only in its festive dimension, but also for its underground scenes or issues, sometimes less obvious or explicit

My purpose with this thesis is to analyze the construction of national narratives produced by two early institutions dedicated to history making and the building of memory: the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute and the Archeological Geographical Institute of the State of Pernambuco, currently the Archeological, Historical Geographical Institute of the State of Pernambuco. I deal mainly with the discourses the the members of both institutions produced at the time of the hundreth anniversary celebrations of the Pernambuco 1817 revolt. I intend to understand the new political uses that were made concerning the past, as well as to unveil the conflicts and intentions that had driven the historiography of both institutes, at the time of consolidation of the republic. My goal is to understand how some of the main political myths in the Brazilian First Republic were constructed.

Resumen
In this study, we explore six preschool pedagogues’ experiences regarding the celebrations of cultural and religious festivals and traditions, and how this is noted in their respective preschool settings. The purpose of this critical study is to make educators aware of how children’s ethnic and cultural diversity is reflected in the preschool’s attention or lack of attention to different festivals and traditions. The study is based on interviews conducted with six randomly selected preschool pedagogues from six different preschools from different parts of Sweden. Three of the preschool peda-gogues interviewed worked at “monocultural” preschools while the other three worked at what they considered as “multicultural” preschools. The results of the study are, that regardless of how the composition of the children’s group appeared, the preschool pedagogues’ reflections on their own situated experiences reveal the extent to which the festivals and traditions cele-brated are so-called Swedish and Christian. The festivals and traditions celebrated are e.g. Easter, Midsummer, Lucia and Christmas. Celebrations and traditions of a decent other than Swedish are not recognized in the same way. Theoretically, this study is based on Sara Ahmed’s ideas surrounding ‘the hegemony of white-ness’ and the ‘phenomenology of whiteness’. For us, this important critical and theoretical re-source opens for future questions about how well established the white hegemony is in our Swedish preschool.

Resumen
This study explores how myths and rituals are conjoined within the practices of the coven of American Eclectic Wiccan Pagans called the Temple of the Sacred Craft. In order to understand how these two apparently distinct areas, myths and rituals, are related this thesis examines the relevant areas of the fields of ritual studies, myth studies and myth-ritual theory. The relatively new field of Pagan studies is also investigated. This leads to an historically and contextually grounded approach to each of these subjects. An emically and etically balanced approach to definition theory is employed, for as is argued here it is only within the context of such a balanced methodological framework that a fuller understanding of how Pagans understand themselves, and not only how others have represented them, can be attained. The primary methodology of this thesis is that of anthropological participantobservation, which has been the mainstay ofAmerican anthropology since Franz Boas. Such fieldwork allows for the direct observation and experience ofPagan seasonal celebrations and their attendant rituals. This in tum leads to a better understanding ofthose rituals. The thesis is also exploration ofhow living Pagans understand and experience their own praxes. Thus the thesis focuses on the eight Sabbats, or seasonal holidays, and their accompanying rituals, of the Temple ofthe Sacred Craft, an Illinois-based coven of Eclectic Wiccans. This fieldwork is combined with an examination and analysis of several relevant and influential texts written by popular Pagan authors that highlight their own approach to·their individual Paganisms, typically Wiccan or Wiccan-derived in nature. This allows the practices of the Temple ofthe Sacred Craft to be placed in the broader area of Wiccan practice and belief. This thesis hence reveals several challenges to theories ofritual, myth and myth-ritual. It finds that by themselves the major schools of ritual theory fail to understand or to explain the practices and beliefs ofthe Temple of the Sacred Craft. The thesis further challenges popular contemporary understandings ofmyth as a reified category. Finally it will show how the classical myth-ritual theories that have so influenced the development ofWiccan ritual practice and thealogy are now incapable of accounting for those same practices and thealogies. As such, this dual methodology ofparticipant-observation and textual analysis explores and develops new approaches to all ofthese subjects, including the development of a theory of what this thesis calls 'embodied myth-rituals'. Under certain circumstances such a theory collapses the reified categories ofmyth and ritual to reveal a new and holistic praxis. One ofthe ways in which this thesis is an original contribution to learning, is that it applies general methodological insights to this particular Pagan coven. As will be seen, this testing ofthe method against this specific example of the Temple ofthe Sacred Craft indicates certain weakness with the theories in question and thus necessitates major modification, ifnot a complete recasting, ofprevious myth-ritual studies, at least within the context ofthis particular Pagan coven. The very specific new work presented in this thesis clearly needs to be set within a broader context of the study ofreligious practice, particularly as related to Pagan studies. In order to do this the following topics are closely described and examined: the etymology and history ofthe term 'pagan' and its differentiation from modem 'Pagan' religions; ways of categorizing modem Paganisms and the history of ritual theory and its two main schools ofthought. Pagan usages and understandings of what ritual is and what rituals are also explored, as is the history and etymology of the term 'myth' in academic and philosophical thought. Attention is also given to: Pagan understandings ofwhat myth is and what myths are; the classical myth and ritual theories ofWilliam Robertson Smith, Sir James Frazer and Jane Harrison and the Ritual Dominant School (theories which are significantly questioned here); a full cycle of the Temple of the Sacred Craft's eight Sabbat rituals; and, finally, the Sabbat rituals found in four important and influential Pagan texts. These areas of study gives rise to an analysis ofmyths within the Temple ofthe Sacred Craft's seasonal ritual cycle and the Pagan texts consulted, all of which leads to a fundamental critique ofthe ability of classical myth-ritual theories to understand the Temple ofthe Sacred Craft's ritual praxis and, finally, the development of a theory of embodied myth-rituals. This thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapters one through three are largely concerned with theoretical and definitional issues. Chapter one will introduce the Temple ofthe Sacred Craft, which is at the centre ofthis thesis. It will also be concerned with the methodological issues surrounding participant-observation. Chapters and three focus upon definitions of 'Pagan', 'ritual' and 'myth' as well as provide an overview of classical myth-ritual theory. Chapter four begins the ethnological examination of the Temple of the Sacred Craft's Sabbat rituals after providing a wider context ofPagan ritual practice. This chapter is a transition between the general and the specific and allows for chapters five and six to focus on the Temple of the Sacred Craft and its relation, especially, to the concerns of chapters two and three. In these chapters the theory of embodied myth-rituals is developed and connected to communication theory. The final chapter summarizes and offers specific conclusions to the first six.
