Resumen
This chapter provides a linguistic description of the English varieties found in the anglophone Caribbean. It briefly reviews major socio-historical processes involved in Creole genesis and in the emergence of local standard Englishes in this region, with a focus on the concept of the Creole language continuum. The linguistic overview includes phonological and morphosyntactic features which have been described as being typical of standard and nonstandard varieties of Caribbean English. The emphasis is placed on the breadth of linguistic diversity that exists within ‘the standard to nonstandard English’ range of the continuum (i.e., varieties furthest away from basilectal Creoles), while recognizing the complexity of the linguistic overlap between these varieties on the continuum.

Resumen
Pidgin and creole languages are found throughout the world, with relatively greater concentrations in the Caribbean basin, the Indian Ocean, the coast of Western and Central Africa, and Oceania. In most literature, pidgins and creoles are grouped according to respective lexifiers, from which the bulk of their vocabulary derives. Emerging in contact environments, pidgins and creoles have been profoundly influenced by sociolinguistic forces and offer compelling evidence of the extent to which extra-grammatical factors contribute to the shape of language. This chapter pursues two questions. What is the interest of these languages to contemporary sociolinguistics? And how can the adoption of a sociolinguistic posture better address the distinction of creole from non-creole?

Resumen
Creole Noise constructs a literary history of Creole literature—also known as dialect literature, or literary dialect—and performance in the English-speaking Caribbean from the heyday of colonialism in the late-eighteenth century to the post-Emancipation period of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. It does so from an understanding that Creole is an essential feature of Caribbean cultural production. In emphasizing travel, the gendering of literary dialect, pro-slavery authors, and multi-racial authors, the book revises the common view that Creole literature was an insular local practice of the twentieth century Caribbean, or solely the product of modern, anti-colonial, black-affirming nationalist projects. Authors of early literary dialect include white creoles, blacks and browns. The book reconstructs an earlier proliferation of dialect literature in the preceding centuries, usually dismissed as merely racist mimicry of “black talk”, not understood as part of a continuum of artistic production in the Caribbean. The book argues that the Caribbean’s history of dialect literature is a factor in the literary histories of the United States and the wider trans-Atlantic.

Resumen
This book tells a distinct story of Indians in the Caribbean—one concentrated not only on archival records and institutions, but also on the voices of the people and the ways in which they define themselves and the world around them. The book explores previously marginalized Indians in the Caribbean and their distinct social dynamics and histories, including the French Caribbean and other islands with smaller South Asian populations. It pursues a comparative approach with inclusive themes that cut across the Caribbean. In 1833, the abolition of slavery in the British Empire led to the import of exploited South Asian indentured workers in the Caribbean. Today India bears little relevance to most of these Caribbean Indians. Yet, Caribbean Indians have developed an in-between status, shaped by South Asian customs such as religion, music, folklore, migration, new identities, and Bollywood films. They do not seem akin to Indians in India, nor are they like Caribbean Creoles, or mixed-race Caribbeans. Instead, they have merged India and the Caribbean to produce a distinct, dynamic local entity. The book does not neglect the arrival of nonindentured Indians in the Caribbean since the early 1900s. These people came to the Caribbean without an indentured contract or after indentured emancipation but have formed significant communities in Barbados, the US Virgin Islands, and Jamaica. The book contributes a thorough analysis of the Indo-Caribbean, among the first to look at the entire Indian diaspora across the Caribbean.
