Texto completoHuman-wildlife conflict is an ongoing issue worldwide. Within South Africa, human-carnivore conflict (HCC) as a result of carnivore depredation on small-livestock causes large-scale losses, and promotes the use of predator management tools by farmers. Despite being one of the major offenders involved in HCC, caracals, and their ecology in particular, are understudied. This is mainly due to high levels of persecution, coupled with their elusive nature. Within the Karoo region of South Africa, pastoralists make use of large-scale lethal predator controls in an attempt to remove the offenders, or non-lethal predator controls to protect livestock and deter predators. However, the effects of these various predator control techniques on caracal ecology have not been widely tested. Therefore, the aims of this thesis were, firstly, to assess caracal diet on lethal and non-lethal treatment farms in the Karoo; secondly, to investigate the drivers of caracal habitat selection on a non-lethal farm in the Karoo; and finally, to evaluate caracal activity patterns on the non-lethal farm. To do this, I made use of two non-invasive techniques (i.e. scat analysis and camera trapping). Caracals appeared to favour natural prey across all sites, with livestock remains only found in scats collected at the lethal treatment farm. Caracals had the broadest dietary breadth on the non-lethal treatment site, and the narrowest on the lethal treatment site. The main components of caracal diet included small mammals, lagomorphs, rock hyraxes (Procavia capensis), wild ungulates and arthropods. Caracal habitat selection was explained by resource dispersion and environmental features Interestingly, the presence of livestock was not a major consideration in caracal habitat selection. Caracals were mainly nocturnal but became increasingly crepuscular during winter. In addition, caracal activity overlapped significantly with black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas), lagomorphs and common duikers (Sylvicapra grimmia). Caracals showed plasticity in their activity patterns based on seasonal temperature fluctuations, and partially human avoidance. This study contributes to understanding how caracal ecology differs on differently managed livestock farms. Throughout this study, the importance of both a natural prey base, as well as natural lands to caracal survival have been revealed. These findings can contribute to caracal conservation in HCC areas.

Texto completoThe method of manufacture of gear on a large scale is based on process that use cutting tools, called Hob or “Caracol”. This method allows the speed and accuracy. The machine and tool designed for this process are specific for application in the manufacture of toothed gears and shafts. This making it necessary insight into the optimization of these tools. Failure to replace the tool at the right time involves two problems: or it can be exchanged before the end of life, or it can be overused and form the so-called excessive wear, which reduces the number of cutter sharpenings. The point of study from which it comes this work is to determine the quantity of parts to be produced with each of these tools, it know that the same tool can be applied to various types of pieces, ranging in diameter and thickness, which characterizes the complexity of this process. Therefore data about machining tool wear depending on the size of the pair part / tool were plotted collected. After that, standard curves of wear in relation to the pair part / tool and by this standard curve, to determine the life of the cutters in quantities of parts to be manufactured. Soon after, the tests performed could proved the effectiveness of this correlation.

Texto completoThe functional food market (foods with beneficial properties for health) is increasing and is subject of important research in the food industry. The goal of this thesis has been experimental characterization of caramels with high proportion of di-fructose anhydrides (DFA) processes, using laboratory-scale experiments with the aim to design a semi-pilot-scale reactor by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). These caramels were prepared from a solution of fructose syrup with a resin catalyst. The influence of the ratio fructose/water, proportion of resin and temperature were studied. In a first step, a study was carried out to establish the kinetics laws from a simplified reaction mechanism. The results showed a DAF’s yield of up to 50% depending on the operating conditions. In a second step, the fluids involved in caramelization reaction were characterized. A behavior change outcome was observed during the reaction: the Newtonian fluid becomes non-Newtonian (rheofluidifying). In a third step, the hydrodynamic behavior was analyzed by CFD in order to propose a semi-pilot-scale reactor with similar results to laboratory scale. The numerical modeling based on non-dimensional numbers proposes a batch reactor with cylindrical geometry equipped with a stirrer of semi-circular type. The static mixer was also contemplated. In this case, the radial velocity of fluid (0.2 m.s-1) is the scale up factor. Finally, the low energy consumption of this continuous reactor represents a real advantage to produce caramel to industrial scale
El mercado de los alimentos funcionales (alimentos con propiedades benéficas para la salud) está en plena evolución y ha sidoobjeto de investigación en la industria alimentaria. Esta tesis tiene como objetivo caracterizar experimentalmente un proceso aescala de laboratorio para producir caramelos con alto contenido en dianhídridos de fructosa (DAF), con el fin de extrapolar a unaescala semi-piloto utilizando CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Estos caramelos son obtenidos a partir de jarabe de fructosautilizando una resina como catalizador. Se estudió la influencia de la proporción de fructosa, la proporción de resina y de latemperatura. En una primera etapa, se realizó un estudio para establecer las leyes de velocidad a partir de un mecanismo dereacción simplificado. El seguimiento cinético permitió alcanzar un rendimiento de hasta 50% en DAF dependiendo de lascondiciones operatorias. En una segunda etapa, se realizó una caracterización de los fluidos implicados en la reacción decaramelización. Un cambio en el comportamiento del fluido durante la reacción fue observado. El fluido newtoniano se comportacomo fluido no-newtoniano (adelgazante). En una tercera etapa, el comportamiento hidrodinámico del sistema fue analizadomediante CFD, a fin de proponer un reactor semi-piloto que presente resultados similares a los calculados para la escalalaboratorio. La propuesta resultante del modelo matemático basado en los números adimensionales, es un reactor por lotes con unageometría cilíndrica y un agitador de tipo semicircular. Un mezclado estático fue también conceptualizado. En este caso, lavelocidad radial del fluido (0,2 m.s-1) fue el factor de extrapolación del proceso. Por último, el bajo consumo de energía de estereactor continuo representa una verdadera ventaja para la producción de caramelos a nivel industrial

O presente trabalho focaliza as maneiras como o Diabo é apresentado na literatura brasileira contemporânea especificamente nos contos O hóspede, de Frei Betto, Eu e Bebu na hora neutra da madrugada, de Rubem Braga, Alma, vendo e Belzebu.com, de Luis Fernando Veríssimo, Lênin desce aos infernos, de Paulo Coelho e Nostalgia do amor ausente, de Walmor Santos. Na busca para o alcance do objetivo proposto pesquisou-se as três formas principais como Satã aparece na literatura e na teologia, que são apresentadas nos três primeiros capítulos, a saber: a face de anjo, a face de besta e a face humana. No quarto capítulo é feita a análise dos contos supracitados enfocando com qual das faces propostas na pesquisa o Diabo é apresentado. Verificou-se ainda que este personagem passou por diversas metamorfoses ao longo da história e, apesar de ter perdido o poder de impor o medo, continua sendo importante no meio teológico bem como um dos maiores personagens da literatura de todos os tempos.
Abstract : This paper focuses on the ways that the Devil is presented in contemporary brazilian literature specifically tales O hóspede, of Frei Betto, Eu e Bebu na hora neutra da madrugada, of Rubem Braga, Alma, vendo and Belzebu.com, of Luis Fernando Veríssimo, Lênin desce aos infernos, of Paulo Coelho and Nostalgia do amor ausente, of Walmor Santos. In seeking to achieve the proposed objective was investigated three main ways as Satan appears in literature and theology, which are presented in the first three chapters, namely: the angel face, the face of the beast and the human face. In the fourth chapter the analysis is made of the afore mentioned tales focusing on which of the proposed faces in the research presented is the Devil. It was also found that,this,character,has.gone,through several metamorphoses throughout history and despite having lost the power to impose fear, remains important amid theological as well as one of the greatest literary characters of all times

Texto completoEl presente proyecto tiene como objeto producir y exportar desde Chile caracoles de la especie Hélix Aspersa al mercado español. La viabilidad de nuestro proyecto: · El mercado Español consume alrededor de 20.000 toneladas anuales de caracoles terrestres. Actualmente existe un exceso de demanda. Se importan alrededor de 13.000 toneladas al año, las cuales equivalen al 68% del consumo total. · El 80% del consumo en el mercado español corresponde a la especie Hélix Aspersa y de éste porcentaje el 90% se consume fresco y el 10% restante en conserva. La tasa promedio de crecimiento de las importaciones en los últimos 4 años se ha visto incrementado en más de un 20% anual. · El Modelo de Negocio contempla un Plantel de Producción; la producción será enviada a un importador español definido como el segmento de mercado a servir. · Tenemos ofertas concretas de importadores españoles que están dispuestos a comprar nuestra producción. · El exportar en contra estación y las características de nuestro producto son valoradas por nuestros clientes. · La estrategia de posicionamiento del producto será de enfoque, dado que se concentrará en un mercado geográfico específico y un determinado segmento de la industria. · Para concretar las futuras ventas se realizará un marketing directo entre la empresa y los potenciales compradores. · La empresa tiene la capacidad para exportar un total de 79 toneladas en cinco años de operación, iniciando las exportaciones el primer año con 3 toneladas, las exportaciones totales representarán una venta CIF de US$ 422.000. · La inversión total es de $29,5 millones en el horizonte del proyecto. La tasa interna de retorno (TIR) del proyecto es de un 55,8% con un horizonte de 10 semestres y el valor presente neto durante el mismo periodo, descontado a una tasa del 32,7% anual es de $12,5 millones. · Desde el punto de vista del inversionista, el proyecto arroja un valor presente neto de $8,4 millones evaluados a la misma tasa de descuento anterior y una tasa TIR de 47%, en el horizonte del proyecto. · La estructura societaria de la empresa será del tipo Sociedad Anónima Cerrada. Texto completoThe axes of reflection in this paper are the Contemporary City and Street-Dwelling. Our starting point is the people who are in street situation, but it is our understanding that one cannot isolate the study of the street population without expanding the context to the city and the concept of street-dwelling. We tried to investigate how the process of subjectivation of people in the urban space of the contemporary city takes place, specifically regarding those who live in the streets. Based on the assumptions of interventional research originated from the Socio-institutional Analysis, we established what we called interventional meeting with the street population. We tried to bring to the fore a reality that we are not familiar with; and often causes the population in street situation to be viewed in a prejudiced, stereotyped and stigmatized way. Therefore, we widened our scope to present speeches, discourses, texts, talks and dialogues with our interlocutors, in the attempt of mapping out the relationships that occur in the urban space. Thus, there are two ways one can understand the proposition "street dwelling": as a space for interacting; for meeting; a polis – a space to reflect on life; to relate to one another; to build quality life alternatives for all and not just for some. And also as a shelter, a refuge for those who do not live within four walls and use the streets as a home. The street-dwelling concept bears a notion that we should breach the walls in our relationships to live with otherness; to open up to a multiple city; a city of connection, of life.

Technology used te generate UWB is at present based on classic pulse radar techniques, which are band and power-limited, due to hardware limitations. The two major consequences are unachievable bandwith requirement and high coûts associated with high-teck hardware. CARAISS is a project aimed not only at overcoming this lirait but also at doing it at low cost with classical technology. Questa tesi di dottorato si configura come l’edizione critica moderna della "Verra Antiga" e il "Naspo Bizaro", i due poemetti in ottava rima in veneziano di Alessandro Caravia, poeta-gioielliere della Venezia cinquecentesca (1503-1568). In appendice alla tesi si ritrova inoltre l'edizione delle "Stanze alla venitiana d'un bravo", che si è rivelato essere sostanzialmente un plagio del "Naspo Bizaro". All’edizione si aggiunge il commento letterario, filologico, linguistico e lessicale delle opere. In particolare, per quanto riguarda la parte lessicale, è stato realizzato un glossario settoriale che mette in luce le specificità della lingua del Caravia (ad es. i gergalismi, gli ittionimi e il lessico marinaresco, il lessico militare, il lessico della scherma, i toponimi, ecc.).

Texto completoLa Alantoína es un producto derivado del metabolismo de las purinas, que se produce específicamente por la oxidación del Ácido Úrico. En el reino animal la excreción de Alantoína es sintetizada por varias clases, una son los gastrópodos; los seres humanos no la producen. Es utilizada hace décadas en productos cosmetológicos, dadas sus propiedades antioxidantes. Montar un proceso que permita determinar Alantoína en baba de caracol a través de la técnica de electroforesis capilar y cuantificar la producción de este compuesto bajo diferentes condiciones dietarias han sido los grandes objetivos de esta memoria de título. Se determinaron las condiciones que permitieran distinguir la Alantoína de otros derivados nitrogenados como Xantina, Hipoxantina, Urea y Ácido Alantoico, metabolitos nitrogenados presentes también en la baba de caracol. Las condiciones más adecuadas fueron capilar de 75 μm y 60 cm de largo, a 30 ºC y corriente de 20 KV. Se identificó la presencia de Alantoína en muestras de baba de caracol, previamente concentradas utilizando Alantoína como estándar interno. El método montado permitió la detección de Alantoína, Hipoxantina y Xantina en baba de caracol, simultáneamente. Los análisis efectuados en base a ayuno, dieta con soya y sin soya, demuestran que en un período de tres semanas las diferencias son significativas a favor de la dieta con soya, que aumenta la Alantoína, siendo la dieta sin soya y el ayuno bajos en ésta y sus diferencias no son significativas. La Alantoína en la baba de caracol está directamente relacionada al consumo de purinas en la dieta. Los resultados obtenidos nos han permitido montar una técnica rápida, de bajo costo y sensible para la determinación de Alantoína, permitiendo la investigación para manipular la dieta y mejorar las propiedades antioxidantes de la baba de caracol, utilizada con fines cosméticos
