Texto completoWhen light interacts with an object, two types of phenomena can occur: light can be either absorbed or redirected by the object. The latter phenomenon is generally referred to as light scattering. Despite the significant efforts over the past decades of the scientific community, light scattering from rough surfaces remains a complex problem. This is partly due to the high degree of multidisciplinary that is required for its study. The present multidisciplinary study is related to four scientific domains that must be examined to consider the full light scattering phenomenon. First, a large panel of a rough surface, elaborated by ourselves in the laboratory or manufactured industrially, is selected for its wide range of visual aspect. The morphology of the samples are characterized using three experimental tools which allow us to describe their surface morphologies over four decades of spatial frequencies. Then the angular intensity distributions of the light scattered from the samples are measured which confirm the wide variety of optical properties of the samples. Finally, these reliable and representative experimental data are compared to the results of different light scattering models, based on both the physical and the geometrical optics approaches. The main conclusion we drew from this work is that for the examined surfaces, the light scattering can be approximated fairly well by a model based on the physical optics approach, while at the same time, geometrical optics models are not able to give an adequate description of the same scattering data
