Resumen
In this study, the compression behaviour of unsaturated damaged COx claystone is investigated by performing high pressure oedometer tests with controlled suction. The damaged oedometer samples were prepared by shearing the claystone in triaxial conditions. Four high pressure oedometer tests were conducted using different controlled suctions. The effects of suction and damage on the swelling and compression were investigated in oedometer. Results show that the intact claystone exhibits a larger swelling strain than that of the damaged one at the same imposed suction. The damaged claystone at a lower suction displays a smaller yield stress and higher compressibility, and exhibits a larger compression index Cc than the intact one, evidencing the effect of damage. In addition, the step compression index Cc* increases with the increase of vertical stress, while deceases with the decrease of suction. This indicates the dependencies of compression behaviour on vertical stress and suction.

Resumen
Compacted MX80 bentonite/Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) claystone mixture has been considered as a possible sealing/backfilling material in the French deep geological radioactive waste disposal. The swelling pressure of such mixture is an important factor in the design and long-term safety assessment of deep geological repositories. In this study, constant-volume swelling pressure tests were performed on the mixtures with different claystone fractions and dry densities. The test results show that the swelling pressure of the mixtures decreased with the increasing claystone fraction and decreasing dry density. According to the experimental results, the contribution of claystone to the global swelling pressure was further investigated. It was found that the deformation of claystone and its contribution to swelling pressure was highly dependent on the claystone fraction. As the claystone fraction was larger than 30%, the claystone in the mixture swelled, contributing to the global swelling pressure; On the contrary, as the claystone fraction was less than 30%, the swelling of claystone was inhibited by the bentonite and it worked an inert material without any contribution to the swelling pressure.

Resumen
The sustainability of geotechnical infrastructures is closely linked with their long-time behavior. In fact, there is not a straightforward procedure to predict this behavior, and very often, the back analyses of observed data are the best tool to understand their long-time response. In-situ observations of drifts constructed in the Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) claystone, the potential host formation for geological radioactive waste disposal, in France exhibit a progressive convergence. These convergence measurements with quite significant dispersions reveal a considerable uncertainty of time-dependent behavior of this argillaceous rock that can strongly affect the transmit loading to liners, hence the long term stability of the drift. Consequently, the uncertain quantification of the creep behavior of COx claystone presents an important task before analyzing the safety of the waste disposal system. In this work, this challenge was conducted by using the well-known Bayesian inference technique. For this aim, on the one hand, the effectiveness of the classical and hierarchical Bayesian techniques to quantify the epistemic and aleatoric uncertainties of the time-dependent behavior of the host rock were investigated using synthetic data. On the other hand, we dealt with the uncertain quantification of the Lemaitre parameters that characterize the visco-plastic behavior of COx claystone thanks to the real data of in-situ convergence measurements of drifts.

Resumen
AbstractTo understand the fate and impact of gas produced within a repository for radioactive waste, a series of laboratory and field scale experiments have been performed on the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone (COx), the proposed host rock for the French repository. Results show the movement of gas is through a localized network of pathways, whose properties vary temporarily and spatially within the claystone. Significant evidence exists from detailed laboratory studies for the movement of gas along highly unstable pathways, whose aperture and geometry vary as a function of local stress, gas and porewater pressures. The coupling of these parameters results in the development of significant time-dependent effects, impacting on all aspects of COx behaviour, from gas breakthrough time, to the control of deformation processes. Variations in gas entry, breakthrough and steady-state pressures are indicative of microstructural heterogeneity which exerts an important control on the movement of gas. The localization of gas flow is also evident in preliminary results from the large scale gas injection test (PGZ) where gas flow is initially focussed within the excavation damaged zone (EDZ), which acts as a preferential pathway for gas. Numerical models based on conventional two-phase flow theory are unable to adequately describe the detailed observations from laboratory tests.

Resumen
Abstract. A theoretical model of the Compression of the Damaged Zone experiment is proposed. The tools of micromechanics are used to represent the fractured zone. Assuming an elastic behavior of the sound COx claystone and a simplified geometry of the drift, an analytical solution is presented and the crack closure is determined as a function of distance from the drift wall for two loading cases: a prescribed 4 MPa pressure and a stress-free strain with 1 % average value to describe the swelling due to resaturation. The results are in agreement with experimental observations and give insights into the heterogeneous character of self-sealing in the damaged zone.

Resumen
The effect of technological voids on the swelling pressure of compacted MX80 bentonite–Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) claystone mixture was investigated by simulating the technological voids with a pre-defined space between the compacted disks of the mixture. Both axial and radial swelling pressures were monitored. After the tests, the microstructure of samples at different positions was investigated using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), together with the determination of dry density and water content. Results showed that two main processes, filling and homogenization, occurred during soil hydration. In the filling process, the initial technological voids were gradually filled and the axial swelling pressure tended to increase. In the homogenization process, the samples had a sealing zone and a swelling zone. The sealing zone was characterized by a lower dry density than the expected final dry density while the swelling zone was characterized by a larger one. From the MIP results, the sealing zone showed larger inaccessible-pore, medium-pore, and large-pore void ratios and a lower small-pore void ratio than the swelling zone. Over time, the medium and large pores in the sealing zone were compressed, while the small pores in the swelling zone decreased. The stabilized axial swelling pressure followed a unique relationship with the expected final dry density. Moreover, the swelling pressure anisotropy was found to decrease as the technological voids increased.

Resumen
Within the context for deep geological disposal (DGD) of high-level radioactive waste (HLW), thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupled numerical modeling has become significantly important for studying the safe disposal of HLW. In this work, a 3D mechanical module is incorporated into the thermal–hydraulic (TH) coupled code TOUGH2, thus forming an integrated THM coupled simulator referred to as TOUGH2Biot. The Galerkin finite element method is used to discretize the space for rock mechanical calculation. The mechanical process is sequentially coupled with the fluid and heat flow processes, which further gives feedback to the flow through stress-dependent hydraulic properties (e.g., porosity and permeability). Based on the available geological data at the Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory (MHM URL) in France, the improved simulator is used to analyze the coupled THM behaviors of the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone (COx) induced by thermal loading. The anisotropy of material parameters (e.g., permeability and thermal conductivity) caused by the bedding and of in-situ stresses are well considered in our model. The numerical simulation can reasonably reproduce the field observations, including changes in temperature and pore pressure at monitoring boreholes during the ALC1604 experiment. The modeling results indicate that the anisotropic effects are remarkable, and temperature, pore pressure, and effective stress along the bedding increase more rapidly than in the vertical direction. Insight into numerical results through the visual model is beneficial for helping us to interpret the field observations and to understand the complex THM problem in the COx claystone formation. The numerical method and the modeling results presented in this work can be effectively used in support of performance assessment studies of HLW disposal sites to build confidence in the safety of future applications of nuclear energy systems.

Resumen
Abstract In the context of nuclear waste management project Cigeo, the behavior of the fractured Callovo Oxfordian claystone (COx) is studied for its time dependent effect on the long term convergences of the drifts. We present an experimental setup designed to investigate the viscous behavior of a fracture. While few experimental setup already exist with the purpose of studying the time dependent deformation of a rock joint, all of them measure the displacement in the direction of the sheared discontinuities in one point of the sample with devices such as a linear variable displacement transducers (lvdt). The information provided by this sensor comes to measuring the average displacement of the fracture slip. Depending on the configuration of the experimental device, the lvdt sometimes also measures the deformation of the rock medium which cannot always be considered as a rigid body. Which is why we propose in this paper to set a camera up in order to use Digital Image Correlation to get an information of the slip along the fracture.

Resumen
Some (saturated) claystones, considered as host rocks for deep radioactive waste disposal, are sensitive to drying and wetting. Wetting may result in swelling and damage during the resaturation of specimens for mechanical testing. Given that, due to evaporation, specimens may have lost some pore water during coring, transport, storage and trimming prior to lab testing, it is required to re-saturate them by reinjecting the evaporated water content, compressing the pore space under constant water content, or by using a combination of both. It is important to characterize the hydromechanical processes involving suction changes under total stress loading in order to adapt preparation methods and minimize sample disturbances. We present a novel experimental setup to test claystone specimens under isotropic compression at constant water content, while measuring suction, and we discuss the data of three specimens testedat different initial suctions and degrees of saturation. Interestingly, the path followed in the (decreased) suction vs (increased) total confining stress diagram was observed to be close to the Gens-Alonso “Neutral Line” (a line inclined of 45° in a suction/mean total stress diagram, illustrating similar effects of changes of both variables). In other words, even in close to saturated conditions, changes in confining stress resulted in comparable changes in suction. The data obtained indicate that applying a total stress of 12.2 MPa during resaturation keeps the material on the compressive side of the Neutral Line, limiting swelling-induced sample disturbance.

Resumen
This laboratory experimental program investigated the impact of variations in the expansive mineral content, the grain size distribution of employed bentonite, the initial dry density and the selected hydration path on the water retention characteristics and swelling properties of processed Callovo-Oxfordian claystone and its mixtures with MX80 bentonite. The French reference concept for the disposal of nuclear waste in deep sedimentary rock formations envisages the reemployment of excavated material as backfill material, which is installed in situ by means of conventional compaction techniques. The investigations were of special interest as the major issues involving in situ compacted backfill materials were portrayed. Experiments showed that the impact of variations in the dry density on the water retention characteristics of all materials vanished as suctions exceeded 100 MPa. The negligible impact of variations in the initial dry density on the collapse behavior of claystone/ bentonite mixtures remained questionable.

Resumen
Abstract The long term behavior of the lining support in deep drifts is a crucial issue for nuclear waste underground repository project. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the project, the French Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) has built an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) at Bure. The underground structure is composed of a network of galleries whose drilling generates stress redistribution, damage and fracture in the surrounding medium. The damage and fracturing of this excavation damage zone have a direct effect on the displacement field and on the interaction between the formation and the lining support. The design of the support system request, in order to be as efficient as possible, a precise knowledge of the stress and displacement fields around the drift. For viscoplastic rock formation, the stress field around the drift and its effect on the support system must be determined for at least a couple hundred years. This is why we have studied the long term behavior of drifts using an elasto-viscoplastic constitutive law. The laboratory test data and field observations have shown that the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone has a slightly anisotropic behaviour for its elasticity, failure criterion and also creep properties. This anisotropy is largely increased by the presence of the fractures, which we take into account with transverse isotropic models. Homogenization techniques are used to establish a macroscopic expression of the viscous deformation depending on the behavior of the rock matrix and of the fractures. The macroscopic viscous deformation depends on the orientation and density of fractures, which is why based on investigation campaign, we divide the fractured zone, in our numerical models, into zones with fractures of different density and orientation to describe the behavior of the fractured zone as closely to the reality as possible. The model is then applied to the simulation of the convergences of GCS drift. The so called GCS drift belong to the network of monitored drift of the URL and was excavated in the direction of the major principal horizontal stress.

Resumen
Abstract Andra is in charge of the long-term management of all radioactive waste in France. It has acquired between 2000 and 2008 a vast amount of stress data around the area selected to host the French deep geological repository for high activity and long-lived radioactive waste. The minimum principal stress was estimated from hydraulic fracturing tests and the fracture closure pressure was interpreted during the shut-in phase. However, in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone, this method results in a minimum horizontal stress that is much larger than the vertical stress even when vertical fractures were clearly generated. As the uncertainty on the weight of the overlying sediments is low, the validity of this technique in a tight claystone formation with very limited leak-off is questioned. Several tests were reinterpreted using the flow-back data and the pressure rebounds when they were recorded. The new interpretation gives consistent results between the wells drilled around the Meuse/Haute-Marne underground research laboratory and the magnitude of the minimum principal stress matches well the actual orientation of the induced fractures. These data support the use of flowback tests as the preferred stress determination technique in tight formations.

Resumen
Significant interest has been devoted to claystones and shales in the context of geological radioactive waste disposal at great depth. The determination of their mechanical properties is needed for appropriate design of the underground galleries and tunnels. Given their high sensitivity to changes in water content, special care has to be taken so as to provide characteristics as close as possible to the (saturated) insitu ones. Based on the hydromechanical path followed by samples from coring to trimming in the lab, that most often lead to some degree of desaturation resulting from evaporation and drying of the samples, some procedures aimed at minimising the resulting perturbations are described. The considerations presented are based on data obtained on two (swelling) claystones considered in Europe for deep geological disposal, i.e., the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone (France) and the Opalinus Clay (Switzerland).
