Resumen

The paper analyses the emergence of the National Congress Party (N.C.P.) within the context of the recent political history of Sudan in post 1989 era. The date marks the time when Islamists in Sudan assumed power following a coup d’état led by General Omer Al-Bashir, latter on came to be known as the Ingaz regime. The significance of the experience of this Party emanates from the fact that, though it started as a one ruling party, it managed to conclude in 2005 the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (C.P.A.) a major peace agreement ending one of the longest internal wars in Africa. The Agreement was included in the Constitution of the country, consequently hosting Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), the movement which led the rebellion to become a partner party/movement in the rule of the country. The paper reflects on this power sharing experience during the Interim Period up to 2011 wherein the Referendum on Self-determination of South Sudan resulted in dividing the Country into two sovereign states.

Resumen

The emergence of China as an economic power has prompted the question, what impact if any has globalization and market liberalization had on the ethical climate of organizations within China and its neighbor Taiwan? Cross-strait tensions have eased over the past few years due to closer economic integration. Although both countries differ in political, as well as organizational design, they share core cultural values embedded within civilization; Confucianism. This study attempts to understand how the correlation established between ethical climates and National culture by Parboteeah, Cullen, Victor, and Sakano are played out against the backdrop of a shared civilization. Will the ethical climates retain or deviate from the core civilization cultural values theorized by Samuel P. Huntington? To answer that question, we collected data from C.P.A. firms in China and Taiwan using the 36-item revised version of the Ethical Climate Questionnaire developed by John B. Cullen, Bart Victor (1988), and James W. Bronson (1993). The results indicated a significant difference in four areas: 1) principal-individual, 2) principle-cosmopolitan, 3) benevolence-individual, and 4) egoism-individual. When correlated with national culture and their core civilizational cultural value of Confucianism, deviations showed that Taiwan moved away from Confucian values by scoring higher in Egoism while retaining Confucianism with a more particularistic culture. China demonstrated a shift away from Confucian values by scoring higher in principle while retaining Confucian values through its score in benevolence.

Resumen

High rate of increase in the prices of cement is worrisome and become burden to people in the entire construction industry. Researchers, civil engineers, builders, architects and all concerns parties in the building industry are desperate for any suitable and effective but cheaper materials that can replace cement. There is need to find an alternative binding material that can be used mainly or in partial replacement of cement. The materials used were sourced from Bida town, Niger state, Nigeria. Wood ash and cassava peel ash were obtained after burning in the furnace at National Cereal Research Institute Badeggi, Bida into ash and passed through 75 micro meter sieve to the finest texture. The water use for the work was free from impurities. The comparative study on the compressive strength of concrete when OPC was partially replaced independently by some percentage of cassava peel ash (C.P.A) and wood ash (W.A) using 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% on both materials, 0.5 water-cement ratio and mixed design ration of 1:2:4. The mean strength of concrete at control is 0% (27.11N/mm2), 5% (24.44N/mm2), 10% (23.25N/mm2), 15% (23.36N/mm2), 20% (18.52N/mm2) and 25% (15.93N/mm2). 25% replacement of cement has the lowest mean strength at 28 days. Replacement at 5, 10 15% are within specification of (20N/mm2) for plain concrete while 20 and 25% are not suitable for structural concrete. The higher the pozzolanic material added to the cement in concrete production the lower the strength. The effects of Cassava Peel Ash and Wood Ash as environment pollution can be reduced when utilized as part of cement in concrete production.

Sequential treatments of pencycuron at 0.56 kg ai/ha, SN-84364 at 0.40 kg ai/ha applied 7 and 14 days after C.g.a., or pencycuron sprayed sequentially after a tank mixture of C.g.a. plus actifluorfen did not reduce infectivity of C.g.a. Also, propiconazol at 0.60 kg ai/ha or pencycuron applied 7 days before and after C.g.a. did not reduce fungus development on northern jointvetch. Sequential treatments of benomyl at 0.56 kg ai/ha or propiconazol applied 7 and 14 days after C.g.a. reduced pathogen activity on northern jointvetch.

Carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methyl-carbamate) at 0.56 kg ai/ha, propanil (3’4’-dichloropropio-anilide) at 2.2 kg ai/ha, acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid} at 0.14 kg ai/ha, or fentin hydroxide (triphenyltin hydroxide) at 0.56 kg ai/ha did not reduce disease development of C.g.a. on northern jointvetch. Sequential applications of benomyl [methyl 1-(butylcarbamoyl)-2-benzimidazolecarbamate] at 0.56 kg ai/ha reduced activity of the fungus on northern jointvetch when fungicide applications began 1 week after C.g.a. application but had no effect on mycoherbicide activity when applications began 2 weeks after C.g.a.

Resumen

The economic evaluation of three hormonal preparations: ovaprim, ovulin and carp pituitary extract (C.P.E) in artificial propagation of Heterobranchus longifilis was investigated. A total of twelve brood fishes (nine females and three males) of eighteen months old were used for the experiment. The females were divided into three groups. Each group was induced to spawn with each of the hormones. Pooled sperm from the three males were used to fertilize the eggs obtained from the females. Effects of the hormones on the fecundity was investigated to help address the economic values. The results showed that the cost of inducing 1.20kg female to yield 42.83g, 57.60g, and 35.10g of eggs were ₦480.39, ₦225.00 and ₦175.00, for C.P.E, ovaprim and ovulin respectively. Profitability index for ovaprim, ovulin, and C.P.E was 5.58, 3.44, and 3.92, respectively. Indicating that, cost of production accounted <20% for Ovaprim and <30% for both ovulin and C.P.E of the total variable cost. The production was more profitable with ovaprim than ovulin and C.P.E. The study has provided data, comparing the effectiveness of the hormones, revealing that the three hormones can be used for artificial propagation of H. longifilis with varied degree of economic implication. However, ovaprim is highly recommended to hatchery users for optimum performance. Keywords: H. longifilis, ovaprim, ovulin, C.P.E and economic evaluation.

Resumen

It has long been believed that the phase transition behavior and clearing points (c.p.s.) of phthalocyanine-based metallomesogens scarcely change regardless of the kind of central metal. In this work, we have synthesized a series of novel sandwich-type phthalocyanine-based lanthanoid complexes, bis[2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(3,4-didodecyloxyphenoxy)phthalocyaninato]lanthanoid(III) (abbreviated as {[(C12O)2PhO]8Pc}2M, M = La, Ce, Eu, Gd, Tb, Yb and Lu : 1–7). Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by polarization microscope, DSC and temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction techniques to compare with the phase transition behavior and c.p.s. of the complexes. Very interestingly, the c.p.s. of these seven rare-earth metal complexes increased in an order of La (1) → Ce (2) → Eu (3), reached to a maximum for Gd (4), and decreased in an order of Tb (5) → Yb (6) → Lu (7). We have noticed that their rise and fall of c.p.s. correspond to the values of total spin quantum number (S) of the central rare-earth metal ions. Thus, it was found, for the first time in metallomesogens, that the S values of central rare-earth metal ions strongly influence their c.p.s.

Efficiency of three reproductive hormones: ovaprim, ovulin and carp pituitary extract (C.P.E) in artificial propagation of Heterobranchus longifilis was investigated. Total of twelve broodstock fish, comprising nine females and three males at eighteen months of age were used. Females were divided into three groups. Each group was induced to spawn with different hormones. Pooled sperm from the three males were used to fertilize the eggs obtained from individual female. The effect of the hormones on latency period, fecundity, fertilization, hatchability and larval survival was recorded. Latency period (P<0.05) lasted for nine (ovaprim), ten (ovulin) and eleven hours (C.P.E.) at 26 oC. Fecundity (P<0.05) mean values were 57.67±2.186 (ovaprim), 43.00±10.970 (C.P.E.) and 35.00±8.544 eggs (ovulin). Fertilization rate (P<0.05) mean values were 94.00±1.15% (ovaprim), 82.00±2.31% (ovulin) and 82.00±1.73% (C.P.E.). Hatchability success (P<0.05) mean values were 84.33±3.48% (ovulin), 94.67±1.45% (ovaprim) and 89.33±0.88% (C.P.E.) as survival rate was not significant. Non-specific immunostimulants were used in an attempt to protect baboons from infection by schistosomes. Subcutaneous vaccination with cord factor (4·50 mg) and muramyl dipeptide (4·56 mg) 6 days before percutaneous exposure to 3000 Schistosoma haematobium cercariae/baboon (c.p.b.) failed to protect naive baboons: baboons with a 7-month-old, 5000 c.p.b. S. haenzatobium primary infection had developed too strong a natural immunity to detect any protection attributable to vaccination. Subcutaneous vaccination with 0·4 ml of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BOG, 1–8 x 108 colony forming units7sol;ml) 4 days before exposure to 1000 c.p.b. S. mansoni gave a significant (38%) reduction in worm load compared with controls. However, vaccination with 0·8 (intramuscular) and 0·2 (intradermal) ml of BOG 11 days before exposure to S. mansoni 800 c.p.b. did not protect naive baboons, nor did it significantly reduce challenge worm recovery from baboons with a 13-week-old, 500 c.p.b. S. mansoni primary infection. Obvious pathology was seen at the site of vaccination in the first but not the second BCG experiment. These results partly support the findings in mice that non-specific macrophage and monocyte activators give partial protection against schistosome infections but they also illustrate that rodents and primates do not necessarily react identically. Hence, findings from rodent models should be extrapolated to man with some caution.

Resumen

São apresentados os resultados de estudos sobre o comportamento do Enterovírus-70 (EV-70) na região metropolitana de São Paulo desde sua provável introdução no verão de 1984, determinando extensa epidemia de conjuntivite hemorrágica aguda (C.H.A.), até o final de 1987 abrangendo período em que este agravo foi pouco notado. Na fase epidêmica ocorrida no primeiro trimestre de 1984 foram estudados 291 indivíduos divididos em três grupos denominados A, B e C, o primeiro formado por pessoas atingidas pela C.H.A. e os outros dois por indivíduos não atingidos por este agravo mas que, respectivamente, referiam contato domiciliar com casos de C.H.A. e os que não referiam o citado contato. A demonstração de anticorpos se fez pela técnica de imunofluorescência indireta (IFI) para detectar IgM específico para EV-70 e pela prova de neutralização em cultura de células BHK-21. Verificou-se que 56,7%, 33,3% e 20,6% dos indivíduos pertencentes, respectivamente, aos grupos A, B e C apresentavam anticorpos específicos da classe IgM. No grupo A a faixa etária mais atingida foi a de 10 a 29 anos. No período que vai do fim da primeira e única epidemia até o final de 1987, identificaram-se três casos esporádicos de C.H.A. e 10 pacientes com afecção neurológica aguda associada à infecção recente pelo EV-70. Nove, destes 10 casos, apresentaram paralisia de nervos cranianos, todos evoluindo sem seqüelas clinicamente discerníveis. As formas assintomáticas e os casos esporádicos de C.H.A. e de afecções neurológicas mantiveram a circulação do EV-70 no período não epidêmico.

Abstract We describe the design and application to X-ray diffractometry of a new X-ray detector based on a fast, non-hygroscopic, rare earth scintillator. The detector has a background count of 0.1 c.p.s. and a peak count rate in excess of 3 x 106 c.p.s. A good fit is found to the theoretical curve of measured against real count rate for a paralysable detector with 160 ns dead-time.

ObjectiveDespite the contribution of national registries and population-based reports, data concerning the epidemiology of acromegaly is scanty. In addition, the role of the environmental context has not been investigated.DesignEpidemiology of acromegaly was studied in the province of Messina (Sicily, Italy), focusing on the influence of environmental factors.MethodsFour zones, characterized by different degrees of exposition to environmental toxins due to industrial pollution, were identified in the province: area A (76 338 inhabitants), area B (287 328 inhabitants), area C (243 381 inhabitants), and area D (47 554 inhabitants) at low, middle-low, middle, and high industrial density respectively. We identified all acromegalics who were born and resided in the province of Messina, among patients either referred to our endocrine unit or referred elsewhere but recorded in the archives of the provincial healthcare agency.ResultsIn the province of Messina, we found 64 patients (2 in area A, 24 in area B, 28 in area C, and 10 in area D). Macroadenomas were 60%, the male/female ratio was 1, and mean age at diagnosis (±s.e.m.) was 45.4±1.6 years. Overall, prevalence was 97 c.p.m. in the province (26 c.p.m. in area A, 84 c.p.m. in area B, 115 c.p.m. in area C, and 210 c.p.m. in area D). Risk ratio (RR), calculated in every area assuming area A as a reference, showed an increased risk of developing acromegaly in people residing in area D (RR=8.03; P<0.0014).ConclusionThis study confirms the prevalence of acromegaly reported recently. The increased risk of developing this disease in area D suggests that the pathogenetic role of environmental context needs to be better evaluated.

Background: In this study, we analyzed epidemiologic characteristics and morphologic differences between Asian and European population in patients with abdominal aorta aneurysm (AAA). Method: We conducted concomitant study in Japan and Europe , in 31 Asian patients (AP) with AAA and 130 control subjects of the same population, and in 30 European patients with AAA and 126 control subjects (EP). We observed various demographic and anthropologic parameters. Aortography was performed in all patients at the same type of CT-scanners using the same examination protocol and postprocessing. For data analysis, various statistical models were used. Results: There are statistically significant differences in multiple epidemiologic and morphologic findings in AAA patients, as well as in comparison with controls in both groups. This is most distinct in terms of anthropologic characteristics and number of risk-factors, and in terms of morphologic findings, in the length of neck of the aneurysm, transverse diameter of abdominal aorta (AA) and common iliac artery (c.i.a), and volumes of c.i.a. We obtained paradoxical results considering diabetes mellitus, which presented itself as a protective factor for AAA. Conclusion: Demographic-epidemiologic analysis accompanied with morphologic measurements using modern imaging modalities enables obtaining new information on pathology of AAA in different races. There are differences in number of risk-factors, and in terms of morphologic findings, in the length neck, angle of the aneurysm, transverse diameters of abdominal aorta (AA) and in the length of common iliac artery (c.i.a), and volume of c.i.a.

INTRODUZIONE:L’infermiere, già professionista o in fase di formazione, in ogni contesto clinico viene sempre più spesso a contatto con assistiti che presentano deficit di comunicazione, sia temporanei che permanenti. Le persone che presentano Bisogni Comunicativi Complessi (B.C.C.) spesso necessitano dell’adozione di strategie di compensazione, come la Comunicazione Aumentativa Alternativa (C.A.A.). Conoscere la C.A.A. ed i sistemi che essa mette a disposizione già in fase di formazione rappresenta un’importante risorsa per consentire di stabilire e mantenere un’efficace relazione terapeutica. SCOPO:Indagare la conoscenza e la percezione riguardo la Comunicazione Aumentativa ed Alternativa in un campione di studenti del Corso di Laurea in Infermieristica (CLI) valutando l’efficacia di un intervento formativo. METODI:Studio pre-post monocentrico con arruolamento di un campione di studenti di secondo e terzo anno del CLI dell’Università degli Studi di Milano: costruzione e validazione preliminare di un questionario per rilevare le conoscenze e percezioni prima e dopo la partecipazione ad un intervento formativo. RISULTATI:Hanno partecipato 140 studenti; al T0 il 40.0% del campione conosceva la C.A.A., al T1 il 92.14%; successivamente all’intervento formativo le conoscenze del campione sono aumentate in modo statisticamente significativo (p <0.001 per tutte le domande proposte). Il questionario creato ha mostrato buone doti di validità (CVI-S = 0.93). CONCLUSIONI:Pare auspicabile indagare le modalità di utilizzo della C.A.A. anche in diversi contesti clinico-assistenziali, quantificare i professionisti effettivamente formati al suo utilizzo, indagare le conoscenze di studenti di altre professioni sanitarie e non.

Resumen

Background: To assess the long-term outcomes and independent predictors of surgical success of a one-stage minimally invasive surgical procedure for congenital choanal atresia (C.C.A.). Methods: a retrospective multicentric study was conducted between 2010 and 2022. An endonasal endoscopic approach was performed in 38 unilateral or bilateral C.C.A. children. All the patients were clinically and radiologically assessed and followed for at least 2 years. Seven outcome measures were applied. Consequently, surgical success was correlated with all the independent variables reported. Results: 18/38 (47.36%) patients presented normal postoperative healing, 8/38 (21.05) had moderate restenosis (<50%), while 12/38 (31.57%) cases were severe (>50%), requiring a surgical revision. No statistical significance was found for average hospital stay between stenosis >50% and <50% patients (p = 0.802) and postoperative pain (p = 0.075); instead, the severe restenosis group demonstrated a higher delay of breast suction (p < 0.001). Among the independent variables predictors of surgical success, the presence of Charge syndrome and rhinopharyngeal stenosis demonstrated higher risks for surgical revision (OR: 4.00, 95% CI: 0.57–28.01, and OR: 2.75, 95% CI: 0.55–13.69, respectively). On the contrary, the hypoplastic inferior turbinate and bilateral C.C.A. showed a lower risk for severe restenosis by a higher endoscopic surgical space and creating a single larger opening (OR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.22–3.52, and OR: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.10–2.08). Conclusion: Several independent variables could influence the surgical success after C.C.A. endoscopic repair; however, more high-quality evidence is needed to generate an effective predictive model.

Abstract Jurkat cells were used to study the immunomodulatory role of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) in immune cells. The Jurkat cell, a human mature leukemic cell line, phenotypically resembles resting human T lymphocytes and has been widely used to study T cell physiology. The data from this study demonstrate that the Jurkat cell concentration of immunoreactive LHRH was 210 ± 36 pg/106 cells and that of proLHRH was 188 ± 27 pg/106 cells (means ± s.e.m.). The authenticity of this LHRH immunoreactivity is documented in two ways. First, both Jurkat LHRH and proLHRH immunoreactivity demonstrate dilutional parallelism with hypothalamic LHRH and proLHRH. Second, Jurkat lysates show LHRH bioactivity by releasing luteinizing hormone from rat anterior pituitary cells in culture. The presence of substantial amounts of LHRH in medium in which Jurkat cells were cultured for 72 h indicated that LHRH can be released from the cells. Using specific primers to exons 2 and 4 of the LHRH gene, we have found that Jurkat cells (like human T cells) express LHRH mRNA. The LHRH agonist, des-Gly10,d-Trp6-LHRH ethylamide, significantly increases the proliferative activity of Jurkat cells, as assessed by tritiated thymidine incorporation, from 15 980 ± 1491 c.p.m. in controls to 28 934 ± 3395, 30 457 ± 3861 (P=0·05 vs control) or 35 299 ± 5586 c.p.m. (P<0·01 vs control) with 10−11, 10−9 or 10−7 m agonist respectively. LHRH antagonist, [d-pGlu1,d-Phe2,d-Trp3,6]-LHRH, at a concentration of 10−8 m decreases Jurkat cell proliferative activity from 17 145 ± 526 c.p.m. in control medium to 10 653 ± 1323 c.p.m. (P=0·05). Co-incubation with the LHRH antagonist completely inhibits the proliferative stimulation induced by the LHRH agonist. Furthermore, applying monoclonal LHRH antibody to Jurkat cells inhibits the cell proliferative activity assessed by tritiated thymidine incorporation from 19 900 ± 2675 c.p.m. in controls to 15 680 ± 2254, 15 792 ± 1854 and 9700 ± 908 c.p.m. in media with 1:40, 1:20 and 1:10 dilution of purified antibody respectively (P<0·01, 1:10 dilution compared with control). In addition, the cAMP level in LHRH-stimulated Jurkat cells is decreased to 74, 27 and 57% of control levels after 15, 30 and 45 min respectively of exposure to 10−7 m LHRH agonist. In summary, Jurkat cells produce, process and release immunoreactive and bioactive LHRH, as do normal human T cells. Endogenous and exogenous LHRH increase Jurkat cell proliferative activity, and cAMP may be involved in LHRH-induced Jurkat cell proliferation. Entre 1954 e 1969 Carlos Drummond de Andrade escreveu trêscrônicas semanais nas páginas do jornal carioca Correio da Manhã, hojedesaparecido, mas que na época era o mais importante jornal brasileiro.Uma ínfima parte dessas crônicas foi publicada em volume. Escolhidaspelo próprio autor através do critério da atemporalidade, ou da literalidade,as crônicas que hoje conhecemos de Drummond são aquelas que o autorestimou merecerem sobreviver ao tempo. Contudo não são as que hojepermitem revelar aspectos desconhecidos do poeta e que dizem respeito àsua relação com a sociedade brasileira. A leitura das crônicas do Correioda Manhã revela um autor presente e participante na vida pública daépoca. Esse Drummond, cúmplice dos leitores com quem partilha ocotidiano, merece e precisa ser resgatado.

It has long been believed that the phase transition behavior and clearing points (c.p.s) of phthalocyanine-based metallomesogens scarcely change regardless of the kind of central metal. In this work, we have synthesized a series of novel sandwich-type, europium complexes, bis[2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(3,4-dialkoxyphenoxy)phthalocyaninato]europium(III) (abbreviated as {[( C n O )2 PhO ]8 Pc } 2 Eu (n = 8-16) (2a–2i)). Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by polarization microscope, differential scanning calorimeter and temperature dependent X-ray diffraction techniques to make a comparison with the phase transition behavior and c.p.s of the previously reported lutetium homologs ({[( C n O )2 PhO ]8 Pc }2 Lu (n = 8-16) (1). Very interestingly, the c.p.s of {[( C n O )2 PhO ]8 Pc }2 Eu complexes (2) are higher by 35–61°C than those of {[( C n O )2 PhO ]8 Pc }2 Lu complexes (1) having the same chain length (n). Furthermore, these Eu complexes (2) exhibited unique double-clearing behavior, whereas the Lu complexes (1) did not. For instance, the Eu complex (2i: n = 16) exhibited the following phase transition sequence: crystalline phase (K) 49°C Colh 133°C [Formula: see text] 158°C [Formula: see text] 216°C I.L.; the I.L. very slowly transformed into a Coltet mesophase; on further heating, Coltet cleared into I.L. again at 240°C. On the other hand, the corresponding Lu complex (1i: n = 16) exhibited a phase transition sequence of K 50°C Colh 124°C [Formula: see text] 148°C Coltet 205°C I.L., and did not exhibit the doubleclearing behavior. Thus, it was revealed for the first time, in the phthalocyanine-based metallomesogens, that the central metal had a large influence on their c.p.s and their phase transition behavior.

Our previous study showed the inhibitory effect of Qing-Fei-Tang (Q.T.F.) and baicalein on the leukotriene (LT)B4 synthesis of human alveolar macrophages. It has recently been demonstrated that LTs support various cell growth, and basophil and its precursor numbers increase in atopic patients. Therefore, we examined the effect of anti-allergic drugs, including Q.F.T., Xiao-Qing-Long-Tang (X.Q.L.T.), Chai-Pu-Tang (C.P.T.), baicalein and ketotifen which have been used for treatment of bronchial asthma, on human basophil growth in vitro using cord blood mononuclear cells as a basophil precursor source and conditioned medium of T cell leukemia cell line Mo as a growth factor. Two-week cultured basophil numbers identified by alcian blue-safranin staining and those histamine contents assayed fluorometrically were inhibited by Q.F.T. (1.0 mg/ml), X.Q.L.T. (0.01–1.0 mg/ml), C.P.T. (0.01–1.0 mg/ml), baicalein (1–100 μM) or ketotifen (1–100 μM) in a dose-dependent manner while low dose (0.01–0.1 mg/ml) of Q.F.T. showed an enhancing effect on the basophil growth and the histamine content. However, LTB4 or LTC4 failed in restoring the basophil growth reduced by 1 mg/ml of C.P.T. or 100 μM of ketotifen. These results suggest that anti-allergic drugs may modulate basophil growth and differentiation in vitro and/or in vivo and therefore by useful and reasonable for controlling allergic diseases including bronchial asthma.

ABSTRACT The present study describes the acute changes in steroids and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and FSH binding of preantral follicles induced by the gonadotrophin surges on the day of pro-oestrus. Preantral follicles were isolated by microdissection before (09.00–10.00 h), during (15.00–16.00 h) and after (21.00–22.00 h) the LH surge on pro-oestrus. Follicles at each time-period were pooled and steroid concentrations and gonadotrophin receptors determined. Before the LH surge, concentrations of progesterone and androstenedione were 40·8 ± 6·1 (s.e.m.) and 10·7 ± 3·9 fmol/follicle respectively. At the peak of the LH surge, progesterone and androstenedione concentrations in preantral follicles increased to 848 ± 186 and 129 ± 33 fmol/follicle respectively. Immediately after the LH surge, progesterone increased to 1238 ±97 fmol/follicle whereas androstenedione declined to 13·3 ±2·1 fmol/follicle. Oestradiol was less than 6 fmol/follicle throughout these periods. Binding of hCG and FSH to preantral follicles increased after the surge (hCG, 56± 2·6 c.p.m./follicle; FSH, 29·8 ± c.p.m./follicle) when compared with values obtained before the surge (hCG, 15·8± 4·0 c.p.m./follicle; FSH, 14·1 ± 1·9 c.p.m./follicle). Also, hCG binding increased significantly (P<0·05) from 09.00 to 21.00 h (56 ±2·6 c.p.m./follicle). In order to ascertain which follicular compartments were affected by the LH and FSH surges on pro-oestrus, granulosa cells and thecae from preantral follicles were isolated and steroid concentrations and LH and FSH binding measured. Both thecal and granulosal concentrations of androstenedione were significantly (P<0·01) higher at the peak of the LH surge (15.00 h) than at 09.00 h (before the surge) and 21.00 h (after the surge). The granulosal concentration of progesterone was lowest at 09.00 h, highest at 15.00 h and remained increased at 21.00 h. Thecal progesterone concentrations did not increase significantly until 21.00 h at pro-oestrus. Binding of hCG to theca increased significantly (P<0·01) at 15.00 and 21.00 h when compared with values at 09.00 h. Binding of FSH to theca was not detected at 09.00 h and was low at 15.00 and 21.00 h. Binding of hCG and FSH to granulosa cells did not change significantly throughout this period on pro-oestrus. These results indicate that the gonadotrophin surges on pro-oestrus induce significant stepwise increases in thecal LH binding in preantral follicles and that these coincide with parallel increases in follicular progesterone. Thus the gonadotrophin surges on pro-oestrus may be a signal regulating the onset of steroidogenesis and growth of preantral follicles. J. Endocr. (1987) 114, 49–54
