Resumen

Background: Child undernutrition is a major public health concern in Uganda that can lead to increased risks of death with its prevalence higher in rural hard-to-reach areas than in urban areas. While it is assumed that the prevalence will be more concerning in islands with restricted accessibility to healthcare resources, limited research has been conducted on the prevalence and associated factors of stunting and underweight among children in Bussi Islands of Uganda. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of stunting and underweight among children aged 6 to 59 months in Bussi Islands of Wakiso District in Uganda. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Bussi Islands of Wakiso District. Sociodemographic and anthropometric measurements were obtained for randomly sampled 409 caretaker-child pairs from 409 households. Data was collected using pre-tested structured electronic questionnaires validated by the Uganda Ministry of Health. Anthropometric indices were calculated using ENA-SMART version 2011 and data analysis was conducted using STATA version 14. Modified Poisson regression was used to generate Unadjusted and Adjusted Prevalence Ratios (APRs) with 95% confidence intervals. Results: Prevalence of stunting and underweight among children in Bussi Islands were 29.8% and 16.1%, respectively. Independent predictors of stunting included: suffering from diarrhea (APR: 1.8; 95% CI: 1.3, 2.5); household food insecurity (APR: 1.7; 95% CI: 1.2, 2.4); and child age of 12 to 23 months and 24 to 35 months (APR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.3, 4.0 and APR: 2.0; 95% CI: 1.1, 3.6 respectively). Protective factors against stunting were not suffering from measles (APR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.42, 0.92); receiving deworming tablets every 6 months (APR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.42, 0.81); and daily household utilization of more than 80 L of water (APR: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.24, 0.95). Predictors of underweight were suffering from diarrhea (APR: 2.2; 95% CI: 1.4, 3.4) and having more than 9 household members (APR: 2.8; 95% CI: 1.1, 7.5). Conclusions: Child stunting and underweight are prevalent public health problems in Bussi Islands of Wakiso District. Therefore, the study suggests that nutrition interventions in the Islands should focus on childhood vaccination, family planning, sufficient safe water coverage, household food security, and health education of child caretakers on optimal infant and young child feeding and development.

Resumen

En este artículo nos proponemos, por una parte, describir en forma sintética la redada de “limpieza” de mendigos tucumanos que fue ordenada por el general Antonio Domingo Bussi en el mes de agosto de 1977. Por otro lado, describiremos algunas de las prácticas de espontánea solidaridad comunitaria con quienes habían sido abandonados en las serranías catamarqueñas y, además, pondremos atención en el análisis del rol contrastante que asumieron los medios de prensa gráfica local en la cobertura y valoración de estos hechos.

Abstract. The general basin and range Apennine topographic characteristic is generally attributed to the presently active normal fault systems, whose long-term activity (throughout the Quaternary) is supposed to have been responsible for the creation of morphological/structural highs and lows. By coupling field geological survey and geophysical investigations, we reconstructed the 3-D geological model of an inner tectonic basin of the central Apennines, the Subequana Valley, bounded to the northeast by the southern segment of one of the major active and seismogenic normal faults of the Apennines, known as the Middle Aterno Valley–Subequana Valley fault system. Our analyses revealed that, since the late Pliocene, the basin evolved in a double half-graben configuration through a polyphase tectonic development. An early phase, Late Pliocene–Early Pleistocene in age, was controlled by the ENE–WSW-striking and SSE-dipping Avezzano–Bussi fault, that determined the formation of an early depocentre towards the N–NW. Subsequently, the main fault became the NW–SE-striking faults, which drove the formation during the Quaternary of a new fault-related depocentre towards the NE. By considering the available geological information, a similar structural evolution has likely involved three close tectonic basins aligned along the Avezzano–Bussi fault, namely the Fucino Basin, the Subequana Valley, and the Sulmona Basin, and it has been probably experienced by other tectonic basins of the chain. The present work therefore points out the role of pre-existing transverse tectonic structures, inherited by previous tectonic phases, in accommodating the ongoing tectonic deformation and, consequently, in influencing the structural characteristics of the major active normal faults. This has implications in terms of earthquake fault rupture propagation and segmentation. Lastly, the morpho-tectonic setting of the Apennine chain results from the superposition of deformation events whose geological legacy must be considered in a wider evolutionary perspective. Our results testify that a large-scale basin and range geomorphological feature – often adopted for morpho-tectonic and kinematic evaluations in active extensional contexts, as in the Apennines – just led by range-bounding active normal faults may be actually simplistic, as it could not be applied everywhere, owing to peculiar complexities of the local tectonic histories.

L’elaborato si occupa del disastro ambientale avvenuto nella seconda metà del ‘900 in Località Bussi sul Tirino, in provincia di Pescara, in seguito all’apertura abusiva della discarica Tre Monti, nella quale sono stati sversati contaminanti, tra cui idrocarburi clorurati. La discarica si trova a monte del Campo Pozzi di Colle Sant’Angelo, destinato ad uso potabile. Entrambi i siti sono situati nella valle del fiume Pescara, inserita all’interno delle Gole di Popoli. Dopo aver inquadrato l’area di studio da un punto di vista geografico, climatico, geologico, geomorfologico ed idrogeologico, si è proceduto ad elaborare un modello concettuale del sistema naturale, per poi trasferirlo in un modello numerico tramite Visual Modflow 4.6 ©. Si è esaminata la stratigrafia della valle del Fiume Pescara, è stata stimata la diluizione, l’emungimento nel tempo del campo pozzi, la ricarica ed il contributo del fiume Pescara al sistema. È stato implementato un modello di flusso, calibrato sulla base di una piezometria elaborata nel 2012. Successivamente, si è simulato il trasporto di tetracloroetilene, sostanza maggiormente rilevata nelle indagini, osservandone l’evoluzione nel tempo, che va dal 1963, anno in cui è stata aperta la discarica, al 2012, anno in cui è disponibile il primo rilevamento di concentrazione del PCE, pari a circa 5 µg/L presso il campo pozzi, ben oltre alla CSC fissata a 1,1 µg/L (D.lgs. 152/06). Pertanto, mediante l’implementazione di un modello di trasporto, si è stimato che per giustificare una tale concentrazione, la discarica debba aver sversato del tetracloroetilene nella quantità di 800 µg/L, che ha contaminato prevalentemente il travertino, per un periodo di 49 anni. Osservando l’incremento della contaminazione nel tempo, si è stabilito che il campo pozzi è stato interessato in modo significativo a partire dagli anni ’70 e si presume che la maggioranza della popolazione della città di Pescara sia stata soggetta all’azione nociva del PCE.

Resumen

The tool for including local actors in development collaboration projects is called ownership and it is defined in the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness. However, researchers have detected flaws with the definition and implementation of ownership. Some also argue that gender equality and the empowerment of women are neglected aspects in the Paris Declaration and that they are not emphasised enough in the aid effectiveness dialogue. The objective of this study is to examine the perspectives and experiences of stakeholders about the meaning and implementation of ownership on different operating levels through a gendered lens. Additionally, in order to be able to investigate how these matters are interpreted and implemented in practice and affecting beneficiaries, two development collaboration projects on Bussi island, Uganda, were selected for this case study. The main objective was to gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives of the informants, and not to generalize. That is the reason why this is a qualitative case study where the information is based on words and not on numbers. Semi-structured interviews were used for the data collection. Informants form Erikshjälpen, a local organization called RODA and beneficiaries living on Bussi Island were interviewed as representatives for the different operating levels. The conclusion is that the critique provided by previous research can in some aspects be applied to the case of this study. There are no specific strategies on ownership or gender equal ownership by either Erikshjälpen or RODA. There are conflicting perspectives on what the term “ownership” actually means by all informants from the different operating levels. There are also coherent perspectives regarding the importance of ownership and gender equality on all levels, and participation is a key word used by all the informants. However, since a strategy is missing, there is no tool for examining if participation actually can be used to claim that successful ownership and gender equal ownership has been implemented. If a strategy were to be created, it should include a definition of ownership, a plan for gender equal ownership, and agreed upon indicators for measuring both phenomena.

Resumen

Bussi Officine è tra i più antichi impianti petrolchimici italiani. I residui di produzione venivano sversati nella discarica I Tre Monti sin dagli anni '70. A circa 2 km di distanza dalla discarica si trova il campo pozzi di Colle S’Angelo, che ha erogato acqua potabile alla città di Pescara fino al 2007. Dal 1992, solventi clorurati sono stati sversati in concentrazioni che variavano nell'ordine di 1x10-1 ppb. Lo scopo di questo lavoro è stato quello di effettuare uno studio piezometrico, sullo stato di contaminazione dell’area ed uno studio isotopico sulle unità acquifere contaminate. Nel 2017 è stato effettuato il campionamento delle acque sotterranee coinvolgendo 8 piezometri situati nelle zone di contaminazione più gravi applicandovi poi la tecnica CSIA per le analisi isotopiche sui contaminanti ed è stato rilevato il livello piezometrico dei piezometri insieme al livello idrico del fiume Pescara per ricostruire la relazione fiume-falda che è stata riscontrata su tutta l’area; l’andamento si presenta però differente: per gli acquiferi più superficiali si osserva un effetto alimentante del fiume rispetto alla falda; nel caso dell’acquifero più profondo, questo effetto è confermato solo nell’area della discarica, la falda diventa poi alimentante rispetto al fiume nei pressi del campo pozzi. I dati isotopici mostrano un trend verso l’arricchimento che aumenta con la distanza dalla zona sorgente di contaminazione, indice di un processo di degradazione attribuibile alle opere messe in atto per la Messa in Sicurezza d’Emergenza che nel tempo avrebbero causato una riduzione del flusso di ossigeno cambiando le condizioni redox, come testimoniano i valori fortemente negativi del potenziale. Per gli isotopi del cloro l’andamento è più complesso ed apparentemente anomalo rispetto al carbonio: il trend è in verso opposto con un progressivo impoverimento dalla zona sorgente, imputabile ad una possibile coesistenza di più processi provocati dalle opere costruite nel 2012.

Com o intuito de auxiliar o professor no ensino da Literatura, desenvolveu-se um cederrom literário #Alcides Buss: Pomar de Possibilidades# que abrange os mais de 30 anos de produção artística do poeta catarinense Alcides Buss. Este #pomar# permite a formação de uma dinâmica alternativa no processo ensino-aprendizagem de Literatura, no qual a tecnologia interage com a produção do conhecimento. Usando o computador como ferramenta disseminadora, possibilita-se transmitir a um público diverso, em variadas localidades, o valor da poesia e do poeta catarinense. Intending to help the educator at the Literature teaching, was developed a compact disc #Alcides Buss: Possibilities Orchard# that include all the collection of more than thirty years of artistic production from the poet Alcides Buss. This #orchard# permisses the formation of an alternative dynamic in Literature teaching teaching-andlearning, in that the technology interacts with the knowledge production. Using the computer has a disseminator tool, becomes possible to transmit to a diverse public, in many places, the value of the catarinense author´s poetry.

L’objectif de ce travail est de montrer les parallèles existant entre les conceptions de Bréal et Busse concernant le signe linguistique et le changement sémantique. Outre la perspective sur le langage et son développement, sont analysés les méthodes de travail des deux auteurs et les modèles qu’ils proposent pour la description et l’explication du changement linguistique. Bréal a été largement ignoré par la linguistique du xxe siècle. De nos jours, il reste peu mentionné dans les présentations générales sur le changement linguistique. L’œuvre de Bréal n’a réellement été prise en compte par la linguistique que dans le dernier tiers du xxe siècle. Busse introduit dans son modèle plusieurs concepts existants (de Humboldt, Wittgenstein, Grice, et Foucault). Il s’oppose radicalement au le structuralisme. Malgré le titre de sa première monographie, la sémantique historique est entièrement négligée en faveur d’une fervente défense des mérites de l’histoire des concepts. Busse nie catégoriquement une signification abstraite du signe linguistique. Les écrits de Bréal et Busse présentent maints parallèles. Il est surprenant qu’une théorie élaborée il y a vingt ans formule des résultats quasiment identiques à ceux prononcés par Bréal. Cela est d’autant plus frappant que Bréal n’est nullement mentionné pour ses mérites dans les travaux de Busse. Inversement, il est remarquable de voir à quel point les écrits de Bréal auraient anticipé non seulement le pragmatisme et le structuralisme, mais aussi une sémantique du discours
This study tries to point out parallels between the conception of the linguistic sign and of semantic change in Bréal’s and Busse’s studies. Besides their view of language and its development the authors’ methods are of interest as well as the pattern they offer in order to describe and explain semantic change. Until only few years ago, Bréal was totally misjudged by linguists. General accounts of semantic change still fail to make reference to him. Only in the last decades of the previous century did his work find the attention it deserves. Busse assimilates several existing concepts (e. G. Those by Humboldt, Wittgenstein, Grice und Foucault). He strongly objects to traditional concepts of semantic change and above all he thoroughly disagrees with structuralism and its attainments. Despite the title of his first monograph, historical semantics is entirely ignored in favour of the history of concepts. He categorically denies the existence of the linguistics sign’s meaning as a purely theoretical abstraction. The publications of Bréal and Busse show various parallels. It is astonishing that the theory which Busse formulated twenty years ago, has almost identical results. Therefore, it is even more surprising that there is not a single positive mention of Bréal in Busse’s writings. Conversely, it is quite striking, in how far Bréal’s theories give the impression that he has already anticipated a semantic of discourse apart from pragmatics and structuralism

In 2002 the Norrköping municipality decided to establish a number of supportive teams and one teaching group with the purpose of developing alternative supporting efforts for children with social problems. This development work came to be called BUSS. BUSS today consists of four local teams, team Ett, team Norra, team Torpet and the Mathson School.

The teams’ focus, beyond the commission from Norrköping municipality, is to reduce the number of children being placed outside their own homes, get them to function in school, develop their self-confidence and social competence. Also their task is to support parents and take up a functional spare time for the children. In our study we start with a child’s perspective and focus on three different dimensions: the child’s view of its own existence within the development work, the parents’ view of the supporting efforts, and finally whether the children and parents feel that the teams and municipality manage to achieve their goals. The study is qualitative and has its foundation in interviews and written inquiries with a total of 17 children and parents. The purpose of this study is to try to ascertain what children and parents mean when they tell us about the development work of BUSS.

To help us we have found inspiration from the hermeneutic theory where interpretation is the main research method. We highlight what the informant tells us using symbolic interactionism and knowledge sociology, two theories which emphasize human interaction and language.

The study indicates that children and parents find the help and support received to be sufficient. The children describe support received in different spheres, such as school and spare time. The parents emphasize that it is important they also receive help and support. The parents question that the focus is on the school’s compulsory subjects. It appears that the teams do not achieve their goals at present, but the parents are of the opinion that the help and support received has its foundation in the teams’ goals. Furthermore it appears that the staff have a significant role in the children’s socialization, as they are seen as adult role models. The value of continuity in the children’s development is emphasized, and changes in staff are perceived as having a negative effect. The time limit on the supporting effort and reduced time for the children in the school environment is also called into question.

Norrköpings kommun beslutade 2002 att starta ett antal stödteam samt en undervisningsgrupp i syfte att utveckla alternativa stödinsatser för barn med sociala problem. Utvecklingsarbetet kom att kallas BUSS, Barn – Ungdom – Social – Samverkan. BUSS innefattar fyra lokala verksamheter: Team Ett, Team Norra, Team Torpet och Mathsonskolan. Kommunens mål och teamens uppdrag är att

utveckla alternativa stödinsatser i närmiljö i syfte att minimera placeringar av barn och ungdomar utanför det egna hemmet. Arbetet ska ske i nära samverkan mellan skola och socialtjänst.

Teamens verksamhetsmål, utöver uppdrag från Norrköpings kommun, är att skapa en fungerande skolgång, utveckla barnens självförtroende och sociala kompetens, arbeta med föräldraarbete samt skapa en fungerande fritid för barnen.

Studien utgår från ett barnperspektiv med fokus på tre olika dimensioner: barnens syn på sin egen tillvaro inom utvecklingsarbetet, vårdnadshavarnas syn på utvecklingsarbetets stödinsatser samt huruvida barn och vårdnadshavare anser att kommun och team lever upp till uppsatta mål. Studien är kvalitativ och har främst sin grund i intervjuer och enkäter tillsammans med totalt 17 barn och vårdnadshavare.

Syftet med studien är att synliggöra vad barn och vårdnadshavare berättar om utvecklingsarbetet BUSS. För att tydliggöra vad som berättas har inspiration hämtats från hermeneutiken, en förståelseinriktad forskningsansats där tolkning utgör den huvudsakliga forskningsmetoden. Vi lyfter fram vad informanterna säger med hjälp av symbolisk interaktionism och kunskapssociologi, två teorier som betonar betydelsen av mötet med andra och betydelsen av språk.

Barn och vårdnadshavare i studien upplever att det stöd och den hjälp de erhåller är bra. Barnen skildrar att de får stöd inom olika sfärer, så som skola och fritid. Vårdnadshavarna betonar även vikten av att de själva får hjälp och stöd. Vårdnadshavarna ifrågasätter att fokus ligger på skolans kärnämnen. Det framgår att teamen ännu inte lever upp till verksamhetsmålen, men vårdnadshavarna anser att den hjälp och det stöd som erhålls har sin grund i teamets verksamhetsmål. Vidare framgår att personalen har en betydande roll i barnens socialisering, då de ses som vuxna förebilder. För barnens utveckling poängteras vikten av kontinuitet och förändringar inom personalstyrkan framförs som negativt. Att insatsen är tidsbegränsad samt att barnen får mindre tid i skolans miljö ifrågasätts.

Resumen

We will report on a close analogy between turbulent convection in large aspect ratio fluids and traveling wave turbulent patterns in lasers with wide gain sections. In contrast to the fluid case, exact traveling wave solutions can be easily derived for the Maxwell-Bloch equations, including diffraction effects. As in the fluid case, we can identify regions in physical parameter space where stable traveling wave and turbulent patterns can coexist. For a two-level laser, the stable traveling wave region (Busse balloon) extends down to the first laser threshold. However, the Busse balloon for a Raman laser may lie well above the instability threshold or may extend down to the first laser threshold, depending on the sign of the intermediate level detuning from the pump. The physical manifestation of these stable traveling wave solutions is a controllable off-axis far-field emission of the laser. The onset of turbulent patterns beyond the first threshold in the Raman laser is caused by a sideband instability occurring at right angles to the underlying traveling wave (roll) solution. This instability causes the spontaneous nucleation of defects from finite amplitude solutions.

Hydroenergy is one of the most useful renewable energy sources. Hydropower is a vital source as it is clean, sustainable and cost effective. Francis type hydroturbines are applicable to a wide range of head and flow rate values. Spiral case, stay vane, guide vane, runner and draft tube are the basic components of a Francis turbine. In this paper, CFD based 3D numerical simulations of steady turbulent flow in a Francis turbine for an actual power plant, BUSKI HES in Turkey, is presented.

Resumen

The close synergism between experiment and theory for Rayleigh-Benard fluid convection has led to the development of sophisticated theoretical models which accurately predict the onset of widely diverse pattern forming turbulent convection. Close to threshold a multiple scales weakly nonlinear analysis yields a universal class of amplitude equations which accurately predict the formation of roll, hexagon, defect patterns and various instabilities of the underlying roll solutions. An elegant study by Busse of the nonlinear regime established that turbulent patterns and stable rolls could coexist beyond the first instability threshold.

Derzeit sind automatisierte Shuttlebusse beim Einsatz auf einen Operator an Bord angewiesen. Damit sich dies nicht erst beim vollständig autonomen Fahren ändert, bedarf es weiterer Lösungsansätze. Eine Möglichkeit ist die Überwachung der Busse aus einer Betriebsleitstelle. Allerdings können mit den Betriebsleitstellen von Verkehrsgesellschaften nach heutigem technologischem Stand keine Fahrfunktionen übernommen werden. Um diese Forschungslücke zu schließen, wurde im Rahmen dieses Beitrags ein Mockup für eine Betriebsleitstelle von automatisierten Shuttlebussen entwickelt. Das Hauptaugenmerk bei der Konzeption dieses Interfaces liegt in der Anforderungsanalyse. Zu diesem Zweck wurden Experten aus Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft eingebunden. Als Ergebnis ist ein Mockup mit einer interaktiven Karte, einer Ereignisliste und einer Ansicht zur Übernahme der Fahrfunktionen entstanden.

Literacy gains persisted through the second and third grades, even though teachers in those grades were not part of the program. Gains were homogeneous across students of different characteristics such as gender, socioeconomic status, and initial levels of literacy skills.
