Cette recherche porte sur l’empreinte de l'extraction d'uranium et de l'armement militaire nucléaire dans la région des Four Corners aux États-Unis. Confrontant récit muséal et enquête de terrain, elle tend à démontrer comment la propagande infuse la narration historique et invisibilise certaines réalités irradiées. Elle questionnera également le nucléaire comme paroxysme du paradigme techno-capitaliste et comme réinvestissement de la figure du pionnier. Nous étudierons aussi Les résurgences nucléaires dans d’autres domaines comme le Land Art et le cinéma. Cette étude démontrera enfin comment les États-Unis sont un incubateur du colonialisme nucléaire. En opposition à ce regard colonial, le désert sera présenté non pas comme une zone aride et stérile, mais comme un écosystème fourmillant afin d’envisager une représentation en résistance
This research focuses on the footprint of uranium mining and nuclear military weaponry in the Four Corners area in the United States. Confronting museum narratives and field surveys, it aims to demonstrate how propaganda infuses the historical narrative and invisibilizes certain irradiated realities. It also examines nuclear power as a paroxysm of the techno-capitalist paradigm and as a reinvestment in the pioneer figure. It will also examine nuclear resurgences in other fields, such as Land Art and cinema. Finally, this study will show how the United States is an incubator of nuclear colonialism. In opposition to this colonial gaze, the desert will be presented not as an arid, sterile zone, but as a teeming ecosystem in order to consider a representation in resistance

Resumen
My thesis aims to analyse the ways in which the Victorian intellectual and traveller, Richard Francis Burton, has been viewed by contemporaries and more modern critics. In 3 particular, I point out that while most views of Burton in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were positive, in recent times his achievements have been rather neglected in certain academic circles (though there has been no shortage of interest in his life with the publication of a steady stream of biographies). As I show in the thesis, this is largely due to the negative views of Burton expressed in Edward Said's influential book, Orientalism. With the subsequent development of Said's treatise into the branch of modern criticism known as post-colonial theory, Said's views on Burton have become ossified within the discourse. In post-colonialism, Burton is often used as an archetype of everything that was wrong about Victorian imperialism and paternalism. For example, Mary Louise Pratt portrays Burton as a prime example of an English traveller whose "imperial eyes" survey and control everything they light upon (in the case referred to, Lake Tanganyika). On the other hand, biographers and historical writers such as Dane Kennedy have had many positive things to say about Burton, and one of my major concerns in this thesis is to bring together the differing viewpoints of the biographers and post-colonial critics (who up to the present time have largely ignored each other) in a mutually beneficial process of crossfertilisation that will reveal a more complicated-and also more accurate-Richard Burton for detailed future consideration and discussion. In the thesis I assert that we should view Burton as a man of his time who contributed much that was previously unknown to the fledgling Victorian sciences of anthropology and ethnography. In particular, I emphasise Burton's contribution to the development of a relativistic view of religion and cultural traditions that challenged the monolithic view of the Victorians concerning the absolute superiority of their own religion-Christianity-over the native peoples they ruled. In essence, my thesis is an attempt to put Burton back where he belongs as a significant contributor to the developing world-view that gained such huge momentum in the late nineteenthcentury and subsequently led to what is, usually, roughly termed as "the scientific method". Furthermore, it is my belief that this aim can best be realised by dissociating Burton from Said's discourse on "Orientalism" and placing him in other, more positive contexts connected with Victorianism such as Victorian travel writing, Victorian intellectuals with a sympathy for Islam, and the development of Victorian science.

Resumen
Victor Burton é um designer que dedicou a maior parte do seu trabalho ao livro. A fascinação por este objeto começou ainda na infância devido ao contato com as obras raras da biblioteca da família, o que aguçou o desejo de se tornar designer exclusivamente para projetar livros. Sua atuação no mercado editorial brasileiro começou no final dos anos 1970, na editora Confraria dos Amigos do Livro. Como o maior interesse de Victor no livro é a relação entre texto e imagem, os livros iconográficos se tornaram seu principal objetivo e são nos livros desta natureza onde melhor conseguimos visualizar seu estilo. Victor desenvolveu uma linguagem gráfica própria que redefiniu o padrão do mercado editorial brasileiro. Numa época em que o projeto gráfico, principalmente a capa do livro, entre tantas cores e atrativos disputam a atenção do consumidor nas prateleiras das livrarias, já não é tão fácil identificar nem a editora nem a autoria do projeto gráfico e da capa. Entretanto, os livros de Victor Burton possuem um estilo que nos permite reconhecer sua assinatura. Desta forma, a questão que norteou este trabalho foi por que conseguimos identificar os livros do designer Victor Burton? Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi enumerar e identificar os aspectos gráficos que caracterizam o estilo deste designer nos livros iconográficos. Para isso, nos baseamos no método descritivo desenvolvido por Guilherme Cunha Lima, em O Gráfico Amador. A partir das características levantadas, pudemos identificar os principais elementos que nos permite reconhecer a autoria dos trabalhos desenvolvidos por Victor Burton. O uso desses aspectos gráficos reflete o trabalho meticuloso do designer Victor Burton que consegue criar uma narrativa visual auxiliando a leitura do texto através de uma nova leitura gráfica, sobretudo nos livros iconográficos
The designer Victor Burton has dedicated the most part of his work to the book. The interest for this object begun in childhood due the contact with rares books that are part of his familys collection, which increased the desire to become designer only to design books. When Victor started to work in the Brazilian editorial market at the end of the 1970s, at the Confraria dos Amigos do Livro house publisher. As the Victors main interest is the relationship between text and image, the iconographic books became his main goal and are in books of this nature that we can better visualize his style. Victor developed his own graphic language that has redefined the standard of the Brazilian editorial market. At a time when graphic design, especially the book cover, among many colors and attractive vie for consumer attention on the shelves of bookstores, is not so easy to identify neither the publisher nor the author of the graphic design and cover. However, the books of Victor Burton have a style that allows us to recognize your signature. Thus, the question that guided this study was why we can identify books of Victor Burton? Thus, the aim of this study was to enumerate and identify graphic aspects that characterize the style of this designer in iconographic books. For this, we based on descriptive method developed by Guilherme Cunha Lima in O Gráfico Amador. From the characteristics raised, we could identify the major elements that allow us to recognize the authorship of the work of Victor Burton. The use of these graphic aspects reflects the meticulous work of the designer Victor Burton who can create a visual narrative aiding reading the text through a new graphic reading, especially in iconographic books.

La presente tesis estudia las características de la obra de Tim Burton, considerado uno de los cineastas más originales y estimulantes del Hollywood actual. Se pone en relación su obra cinematográfica con su biografía, algo especialmente relevante en un artista que recurre tan menudo a su experiencia vital y a los elementos que conformaron su educación sentimental. Se examina su situación dentro del contexto de la industria hollywoodiense y se estudian las constantes estéticas y temáticas que conforman su poética visual. Se aborda la problemática del género, la noción de fantástico y la tradición gótico-expresionista con el fin de comprender la obra de un autor que reinterpreta la tradición cultural desde la óptica de la postmodernidad. Se tratan los problemas y contradicciones que plantean tanto la concepción tradicional de los géneros fílmicos como la teoría del cine de autor. Se comprueba que no solamente resultan enfoques compatibles, sino que pueden además convertirse en planteamientos complementarios que contribuyen a la profundidad y riqueza del debate fílmico. Se habla sobre la particular reflexión genérica que realiza el cineasta en sus películas, conectándola con las características de la cultura postmoderna en la que se encuentra inmerso. En el capítulo dedicado al fantástico se pone de manifiesto que se trata de un concepto que se resiste a cualquier intento de definición y categorización exacta. Dado además su amplio alcance, resulta más apropiado considerarlo, más que un género, un modo artístico del que emergen distintas formas relacionadas. Se contemplan las diversas teorías que existen sobre el fantástico, su potencial subversivo y sus implicaciones psicoanalíticas. Se pone un interés especial en sus temas y mitos, ya que todos ellos son evocados en las películas de Burton. El fantástico actual destaca precisamente por su referencialidad, por su reflexión metagenérica y asimilación del pasado. También se contempla la obra del cineasta como continuadora de una tradición gótico-expresionista, un movimiento continuo cuyo espíritu, estética y posicionamiento vital se oponen a la actitud racionalista del clasicismo. Se realiza un recorrido por los elementos que conforman una tradición que Burton ha recogido principalmente a través de sus manifestaciones cinematográficas. Tim Burton es heredero y continuador de este espíritu romántico, de su atmósfera e iconografía características, de la estética de lo siniestro, de su macabro sentido del humor, de la denuncia de la hipocresía social y de la sociedad que niega la libertad y la identidad individuales, de su énfasis en la subjetividad, la intuición y lo irracional.A continuación se trata el modo en que Tim Burton crea el espacio fantástico mediante una cuidadísima puesta en escena donde el diseño, la fotografía y la música compuesta por Danny Elfman se convierten en elementos fundamentales de la expresión dramática. Finalmente se analizan en profundidad Eduardo Manostijeras y Pesadilla antes de Navidad, películas compendio que representan el conjunto de la poética visual del director. Cierto sector de la crítica considera las películas de Burton como deslumbrantes pero huecos ejercicios de virtuosismo formal. Este trabajo trata de demostrar que, efectivamente, Burton posee un brillante talento visual, pero esto no significa que deje de lado consideraciones más amplias sobre la historia y el significado. La entidad y complejidad de los temas y personajes de sus películas evitan que se conviertan en meros ejercicios de estilo.
This doctoral thesis studies the characteristics of Tim Burton's cinema. It relates his work to his life, examines his situation into the contemporary Hollywood industry and considers the constant elements that form his visual poetic. It studies the question and contradictions of film genres and the Theories of Authorship. It examines the characteristics of Postmodern culture and the particular intertextual practice in Burton's films. It contemplates the fantastic phenomenon, that is best regarded as an artistic mode from which a number of related genres emerge. It considers Tim Burton's cinema to be the heir of what is denominated the Gothic-expressionist Tradition, a movement whose spirit, aesthetics and vital position are in opposition to the rational attitude of Classicism. It discusses the way Tim Burton creates the fantastic space through a careful stage design and the music composed by Danny Elfman.The films Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas are analysed in depth in order to prove that Burton's emotive storylines, and the complexity and entity of his themes and characters, shift his films away from being mere exercises in style.

Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a melancolia na obra de Robert Burton, The Anatomy of Melancholy. Sob a perspectiva de um clérigo inglês de Oxford que vive no século XVII sob a égide do rei Jaime I, a pergunta do melancólico Burton é justamente por que o homem é melancólico. Será uma disposição transitória, um hábito ou uma maldição sobre a humanidade? Por que os homens não entendem a melancolia como sua condição de mortais, decaídos, separados do Sagrado, e se voltam para Deus ao invés de propor reformas sociais ineficazes como as utopias tão usuais no Renascimento inglês? Focando a pesquisa no texto Democritus Junior to the Reader que abre a obra, sem, no entanto, deixar de percorrer todo seu extenso tratado sobre a melancolia, o presente trabalho inquieta-se e questiona junto com Robert Burton, dialoga com seus contemporâneos renascentistas, com pensadores clássicos que abordam temáticas sobre o homem, com pensadores atuais, e procura não respostas resolutas, mas o debate permanente entre literatura, filosofia, teologia, história e outras fontes de conhecimento que ajudaram o studia humanitatis e ainda hoje nos ajudam a aplacar nossa sede pelo mistério do saber
Abstract: This work presents a study about melancholy on Robert Burton?s The Anatomy of Melancholy. Under a clergyman perspective from Oxford who lives in the XVII century on James I?s Kingdom, the melancholic Burton?s query is exactly why the man is melancholic. Is it a transitory disposition, a habit or a curse over humanity? Why men do not understand that melancholy is their mortal condition, that they are decayed, separated from the Sacred, and come back to God instead of proposing such ineffective social reforms like utopias as it was usual in the English Renaissance? Focusing the research on the text Democritus Junior to the Reader that opens his work, nevertheless not neglecting all his extense treatise about melancholy, this dissertation joins Burton and fidgets and requires, dialogues with his contemporaneous renaissance men, with classical thinkers who tell of themes about men, with current thinkers, and wants not resolute answers, but the permanent debate among Literature, Philosophy, Theology, History and others knowledge sources that guided the studia humanitatis and has been guiding us to assuage our thirst for knowledge that still is too mysterious

Référentiel, réflexif, métaphorique constituent un échantillon des expressions et concepts employés pour qualifier les films de Tim Burton, attestant du lien qui unit ce corpus à l'histoire de son art et à son époque. Partant de ce constat, l'hypothèse proposée ici affirme que cette filmographie constitue un cinéma de la ré-imagination. Le cinéaste emploie lui même ce terme pour définir l'approche conceptuelle de son cinéma. Cette thèse explique d'abord le choix de ce mot par rapport aux concepts pré existants pour ensuite analyser ce qu'il englobe et implique dans la filmographie de Tim Burton. Ses films sont conçus comme des boîtes à jouets rassemblant souvenirs, imagination et pièces intactes. Ces éléments constituent la base formelle des ré imaginations burtoniennes. Ils s'entremêlent au sein d'une même image, tout au long d'un fil narratif parfois ténu. En adoptant des procédés cinématographiques et filmiques ramenant vers des âges antérieurs du septième art et rattachant les intrigues au domaine de l'imaginaire par l'intermédiaire de manifestations mentales, Tim Burton construit un cinéma ancré dans le passé, essayant de reconstituer le royaume de l'enfance en le reconstituant avec ce qu'il en reste
Referential, reflexive, metaphorical – these are a few recurrent terms and concepts used to describe the films of Tim Burton, which attest to the links between this corpus and the history of his art and his era. Based on this observation, the present hypothesis argues that Burton’s filmography is a cinema of re imagination. The filmmaker himself uses this term to describe the conceptual approach to his films. This dissertation explains the choice of re imagination in regard to other pre existing concepts before analyzing the implications of re imagination in Tim Burton's filmography. His films are designed like toy chests in which memories, imagination, and intact pieces are collected. These elements establish the formal base of Tim Burton's re imaginings. They come together to form a single image by means an often tenuous narrative thread. By adopting cinematographic and filmic processes which look back to prior eras of the seventh art, and by bringing stories into the domain of the imagination through the intermediary of mental manifestations, Tim Burton builds a cinema that is anchored in the past, all while trying to restore the kingdom of childhood with what is left behind

Le burhan d'avenpace gloses d'ibn bagga au commentaire de al farabi aux seconds analytiques d'aristote le manuscrit d'ibn bagga intitule : ta'aliq ibn bagga ala burhan al farabi (gloses d'avenpace au commentaire de al farabi constitue une partie impor-tante du manuscrit gloses d'ibn bagga a la logique de al farabi. Les deux manuscrits disponibles de ces ta'a liq sont le manuscrit de l'escu-rial et celui de la bibliotheque d'oxford. Ne en 475h/1082 a saragosse ibn bagga est mort en 533h/1138 a fes. Il vivait vers la fin du regne des almoravides et au debut des almohades. La question du burhan (la demonstration) dans les debats d'idees au sein de la pensee arabo-musulmane par le passe comme aujourd'hui et plus particulierement a l'epoque ou ibn bagga a ecrit son traite a connu un interet particulier dans l'ideologie almohade : la demonstration a joue un role important dans l'epa-nouissement de la raison demonstrative par opposition a la raison r hetoricienne. De nos jours, ce debat est a nouveau repris de plus belle. Il est interessant de comprendre pourquoi un tel sujet est actualise et dans quels aspects il est aborde. Notre etude se repartit sur une introduction et sept chapitres. Le premier est consacre a la presentation du manuscrit. Le second chapitre etudie la transmission du burhan dans le monde arabo-musulman. Les termes techniques et les expressions du burhan constituent l'objet du troisieme chapitre. Quant au quatrieme chapitre, il etudie la theorie de la 'illa dans le burhan. Le cinquieme chapitre aura pour titre l'analyse des ta aliq d'ibn bagga. This thesis discusses the role of music and musical sounds in Butterfly Burning by Yvonne Vera. It analyses the way that Vera has used music interlinked with the action of the novel.  This thesis analyses a few areas where music is represented and is important such as: music as an element of healing/forgiveness; music as an element of hope; music as an element of despair; music as an element of working life and the absence of music.  This thesis also briefly discusses who the narrator of the novel is and Vera’s writing technique that incorporates images with hypothetical sounds.   The conclusion shows that music and musical sounds are important to the novel.  It also shows that the music in Butterfly Burning can be compared to the music in a film.  Vera has managed to combine the story of the novel and the description of music so that it becomes one inseparable unit.

Resumen
Biomass combustion for heat applications uses two stage combustion with a gasification first stage followed by oxidation of the gases in a second stage combustion, where most of the heat release occurs. These type of combustion system are gasification or log boilers. However, there has been little study of the optimisation of the gasification stage for biomass applications and this was the objective of this research. The cone calorimeter was used in its controlled atmosphere configuration. A 180oC gas sample line was used to sample the raw gases from the rich burning gasification zone and transfer them via a heated pump and filter to the heated Gasmet FTIR, which was calibrated for 60 species. Hydrogen was computed from the CO measurements. The test facility was also operated on nitrogen in order to measure the composition of the gases evolved under heating with no combustion. were H2O, CO2, CO, formic acid, xylene, trimethylbenzene, acetic acid, formaldehyde, acrolein, acetone, furfural, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) and propanol were the major gases with other hydrocarbons. The energy in the devolatilised gases from the heated biomass in nitrogen was determined from the gas composition and flow rate and a very high conversion of energy from solid biomass into gaseous products was demonstration for a range of biomass. The Chemical Equilibrium and Applications (CEA) software was used to predict the adiabatic equilibrium gas composition as a function of equivalence ratio for the range of biomass compositions. The predicted optimum equivalence ratios for the maximum yield of CO was in good agreement with the experimental measurements. The experimental optimum equivalence ratio for pine was 2.7. The total energy in the gases from the gasification zone showed a thermal efficiency of 80%. Major components were H2O, CO2, CO with hydrocarbons benzene, acetylene, ethylene and naphthalene.

Fuels management in eucalyptus plantations is essential to minimise the impact of wildfire. Prescribed burning has the potential to reduce the fuel hazard in plantations, but is not routinely conducted due to concerns relating to tree damage. Through a series of experimental burns, the issues of tree damage are addressed and minimum tree sizes are recommended that are capable of withstanding the effects of low to moderate intensity fires. Data was collected between 2005 and 2007 over six sites, two species, and three age classes. Tree response results came from multiple measurements of over 1700 individual trees. The fuel characteristics commonly found in sub-tropical eucalypt plantations from age four to eleven are described and quantified. These fuel characteristics are related to fire behaviour and new fire behaviour models, specific to young eucalypt plantations, are presented. The fuel characteristics that most influence fire behaviour in young eucalypt plantations are fuel load, fuel height, and fuel moisture content. These characteristics can be used to predict the rate of spread of a plantation fire under benign wind conditions. A novel technique for assessing the extent of stem damage in eucalypts is developed and described. This technique enables immediate assessment of stem damage following fire; previous assessment techniques recommend waiting a considerable period of time (up to 2 years) until dead bark dropped off and fire scars were evident. This new assessment technique is likely to be suitable for post-fire assessment of any eucalypt species and will provide forest managers with the capability of deciding whether to leave a stand to ???grow-on??? or commence recovery operations. Minimum stem sizes recommended to ensure no long-term damage are between 5 ??? 8 cm DBH (diameter at breast height, i.e. 1.3m above ground level) for Eucalyptus dunnii (Dunn???s white gum) and 5 ??? 13 cm DBH for Corymbia spp. (spotted gum) depending on the quantity of fuel around the stem. Stem sizes vary between species because of the variation in bark thickness between species. This thesis provides all the necessary information to conduct prescribed burning operations in young eucalypt plantations.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: During the history of Israel the concept of "purity" had developed as a way in which God's people could honour his holiness and draw nearer to him, as a sanctified nation. By the time of Jesus, in Second Temple Judaism, the purity system had become restrictive. This had been influenced by political and social developments, including an increased desire to withdraw from Hellenistic and other factors which were seen as contaminating the integrity of Judaism. There were diverse perceptions regarding the achievement of the purity of Israel, including militaristic confrontation and expulsion of alien occupation forces, stricter adherence to the Law and, in some cases, total withdrawal from general society (such as at Qumran). It was, however, particularly the Pharisaic imposition of the supplementary oral tradition, supposed to clarify the written Law, which imposed hardship on those who, through illiteracy or inferior social status, were unable to meet all the minute provisions which would ensure ritual purity. The expansion of the Law of Moses by the commentary of the rabbis, which over time became the entrenched oral "tradition of the fathers", was originally intended to promote access to God by clarifying obscure points of the Law, in the pursuit of purity. However, this oral tradition had, in fact, become an instrument of alienation and separation of the ordinary people not only from the Pharisees, who considered themselves as the religious elite, but also from God. The common people, that is, a large section of the population, felt rejected and on the outside of both religious and social acceptance. On the material level they also suffered under a heavy tax burden, from both Temple and State, which aggravated their poverty. It was this situation which Jesus confronted in his mission to change the ideological climate and to reveal the Kingdom of God as being accessible to all who accepted the true Fatherhood of God, in penitence and humility. He denounced the hypocrisy which professed piety but which ignored the plight of those who were suffering. Hark 7 : 1-23 symbolizes the difference between the teaching and practice of Jesus and that of the Pharisees, and provides metaphorically a pattern of Christian engagement which is relevant in the South African situation today. The Christian challenge is to remove those barriers, both ideological and economic, which impede spiritual and material well-being within society. By active engagement, rather than by retreating to the purely ritualistic and individualistic practice of religion, the realization of the Kingdom of Heaven, as inaugurated by Jesus, will be advanced.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Gedurende die geskiedenis van Israel het die konsep van reinheid ontwikkel as 'n wyse waarin die die volk van God Sy heiligheid kan eer en tot Hom kan nader, as 'n geheiligde volk. Teen die tyd van Jesus, tydens Tweede Tempel Judaïsme, het die reinheid sisteem beperkend geword. Dit is beïnvloed deur politieke en sosiale ontwikkelinge, insluitende 'n toenemende drang om te onttrek van Hellenistiese en ander faktore, wat beskou is as 'n besoedeling van die integriteit van Judaïsme. Daar was diverse persepsies aangaande die uitvoering van die reinheid van Israel, insluitende militaristiese konfrontasie en die uitwerping van vreemde besettingsmagte, strenger onderhouding van die Wet en in sekere gevalle, totale onttreking van die algemene samelewing (soos by Qumran). Drill and blast is a dominant technique in several surface and underground mines in the world. The purpose of this technique is to break rock mass into fragments, which can be handled by mining equipment. The identified major influencing factors in rock blasting are stress waves and gas pressurization. In underground mines, especially in sublevel caving mines, the blast is performed under confined conditions. Hence, one more category of mechanisms has to be taken into consideration which describes the behavior of granular materials. Several small-scale tests have been conducted in order to define parameters which affect fragmentation by blasting as well as to measure the burden behavior during blasting. The purpose of these tests was to investigate how firing pattern, confinement and inter-hole delay time influence the fragmentation. Additionally, an incremental relative distance sensor was developed to measure the burden movement during blasting. The results showed that the burden moved with a velocity of approximately 29 m/s. The V-shaped firing pattern gave coarser fragmentation compared with sequential firing pattern for both the blasted material and confining material.After the small-scale tests, a zero pillar test was conducted under confined conditions to evaluate and validate a newly developed measuring system. The purpose of this system was to measure the burden dynamics. The system was calibrated in laboratory conditions under dynamic loading. This system was based on a piston-like structure and it was equipped with accelerometers and a potentiometric distance sensor. In addition to the measuring system, several installation and initiation procedures have been developed. The results of the measuring system showed that the burden moved 0.98 m at a velocity of 17-18 m/s. All the procedures performed as well as expected and designed.In addition to the study of blasting related mechanisms, the results of a blast also have to be measured. Sieving is usually not an option for large scale operations due to high costs. The alternative way is to implement digital image analysis. This procedure does not interfere with the production of a mine. Several trials have been conducted at the Aitik open pit mine to investigate the influence of short inter-hole delay time (1 ms, 3 ms and 6 ms or 0.14 ms/m burden, 0.43 ms/m burden and 0.86 ms/m burden) on fragmentation. The examined mechanism was the interaction of stress waves between neighboring blastholes. The fragmentation results showed that the trial with 3 ms inter-hole delay time gave a finer fragmentation by 10 % compared with reference blasts and other trials. However, there was an indication that the large specific charge at the mine overshadows the stress wave interaction mechanisms.An additional set of trials was conducted at the Kiruna mine to investigate the gravity flow of broken material. The fragmentation measurements were done with SplitDesktop®. This is a digital image analysis software which calculates fragmentation based on a delineation process of the particles in an image. The aim of in these trials was to develop a procedure to minimize the image editing time. The application of ‘Unsharp Mask’ filter improved the image quality and enhanced the contrast between the particles combined with a quick rating system (developed by LKAB) so that the image processing time was significantly reduced from 2 hours to 10-15 minutes.

The laminar burning velocity of a fuel is the rate of normal propagation of a 1D flame front relative to the movement of the unburned gas. This is a fundamental property of a fuel that affects many aspects of its combustion behaviour. Experimental values are required to validate kinetic simulations, and also to provide input for models of flashback, minimum ignition energy and turbulent combustion. Burning velocity affects burn duration and consequently power output in spark ignition engines. Burning velocities are affected by pressure, temperature, equivalence ratio, residuals, additives, and stretch rates. The constant volume vessel has been used as it is considered both the most versatile and accurate method of measuring laminar burning velocities. An existing combustion vessel and oven were refurbished and new systems built for fuel injection, ignition, experiment control, data acquisition and high speed schlieren photography. An existing multi-zone model was used to allow calculation of burning velocity from pressure and schlieren data, allowing the user to select data uncorrupted by heat transfer or cellularity. A twelve term correlation for burning velocity was validated using methane modelling data. The chosen data from all the experiments was then fitted to the correlation. Methane, n-butane, n-heptane, iso-octane, toluene, ethylbenzene and ethanol were tested over a wide range of initial pressures (0.5, 1, 2 and 4 barA), temperatures (289-450 K) and equivalence ratios (0.7-1.4). For liquid fuels, tests with real residuals at mole fractions of up to 0.3 were also conducted. Stoichiometric mixture tests were performed at two initial temperatures (380 and 450 K) and the same four initial pressures. For mixtures of iso-octane and ethylbenzene, percentage volumes of 12.5, 25, 50 and 75% iso-octane were tested. It was found that the the percentage of iso-octane affected burning velocity non-linearly. For iso-octane/ethanol, a single 50:50% mixture was tested.

This thesis attempts a critical analysis of modern individualism through an examination of its origins in the seventeenth century. In this thesis I discuss the notion of autonomous and self-responsible individuality as a culturally constructed and culturally specific idea. Furthermore, I describe autonomy as only one of a complex of related features of the modern individual, including a withdrawn and objectifying stance toward the natural world, values and other human beings.
In this thesis, I examine two seventeenth-century authors--Robert Burton and John Locke--each of whom represents a different conception of individuality. Burton emulates communal conceptions of identity characteristic of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, while Locke describes an essentially modern, analytical individuality based on the control and possession of an objectified "other".
The theoretical framework for this analysis is derived from Michel Foucault and Timothy Reiss' description of the transition from the Renaissance to the seventeenth century as a transition between different epistemes or discourses. Throughout this thesis, I supplement this essentially structuralist approach with perspectives from Medieval, Renaissance and seventeenth-century cosmology, literary theory, political theory and epistemology.

O presente trabalho pretende desvendar o singular universo cinematográfico de Tim Burton, autor de personagens e paisagens predominantemente góticas. Ao mesmo tempo, propõe-se descortinar o seu contributo para o cinema moderno através da colaboração regular que o realizador tem mantido com o ator Johnny Depp ao longo dos últimos vinte anos. O ponto de partida para este estudo compreende uma breve apresentação das origens, interesses e início da carreira do realizador e do ator no primeiro capítulo. De seguida, e no mesmo capítulo, são analisados os filmes resultantes da parceria entre o realizador e o ator dando-se especial relevo aos temas e elementos iconográficos mais frequentes e à influência que os filmes de terror gótico alcançaram na filmografia do realizador. No segundo capítulo, a carreira cinematográfica do ator Johnny Depp é alvo de análise discutindo-se o tipo de personagens que o ator protagoniza e a sua colaboração com vários realizadores do cinema atual, em particular a sua parceria com Burton. São ainda discutidas neste capítulo, as razões que conduziram ao sucesso artístico e comercial deste par. O terceiro capítulo centra-se na apreciação alargada da obra do realizador e a influência dos seus filmes no cinema contemporâneo através do ressurgimento de personagens bizarras e da perpetuação de mundos esteticamente irreais e sombrios próprios da cultura do gótico (em particular do teen gótico). A revitalização de técnicas de animação de stop-motion e a apropriação e subversão da narrativa do conto de fadas tradicional na obra de Tim Burton são também objeto de estudo neste último capítulo. Finalmente, a análise feita à ligação do realizador com os estúdios de Hollywood permite fazer uma apreciação crítica e chegar à conclusão que desta parceria profissional resultam filmes com um cunho pessoal que são, em simultâneo, comercialmente bem sucedidos e favoravelmente aceites pela crítica cinematográfica em geral.
In this work I intend to show Tim Burton’s peculiar filmic universe as an author of stereotypical characters and dark gothic atmospheres. Meanwhile, I also intend to unveil Burton’s contribution to modern cinema through his regular working collaboration with the actor Johnny Depp over the last twenty years. Starting first with a brief introduction to their childhood and family backgrounds, interests and formative years, I proceed to examine their common filmography as well as Burton’s most recurrent themes and iconography in the first chapter, including the influence of gothic horror films on Burtonian cinematic universe. The spotlight of the second chapter is a brief analysis on Johnny Depp’s acting career, thus discussing his portrayal of a certain typology of leading characters, along with his working collaboration with several contemporary directors, particularly his partnership with Burton. The reasons behind this working team’s artistic and commercial success are also discussed in this chapter. The third chapter will focus on an extended appreciation of Burton’s work and its influence on contemporary cinema as is illustrated by the resurgence of bizarre characters or monsters and heavily stylized unrealistic dark universes properly identifiable within contemporary gothic culture (particularly the teen gothic). The revival of stop-motion animation film techniques along with Burton’s appropriation and plot subversion of the traditional fairy tale in his films are also discussed in this last chapter. Finally, by examining the director’s working relationship within the Hollywood studio system, I arrive at the conclusion that Burton has been able to produce personal films that are nevertheless commercially successful and critically acclaimed by reviewers.

Quello che traspare da molte delle sue opere è una certa affinità tra il regista e i suoi personaggi. Quest'ultimi rivelano il ragazzino un po' strano che fu Burton, cresciuto nei sobborghi americani quasi stereotipati di Burbank, California. Molto spesso, infatti, i suoi eroi vengono considerati “diversi”, reietti di una società che li crede strani, a volte pericolosi. Tramite la sua sensibilità ed esperienza personale, Burton propone quindi il discorso sulla diversità e sulla normalità. In che modo il regista rappresenta questi due tipi di realtà, così distanti tra loro ma intrecciate allo stesso tempo? Spesso i suoi protagonisti, rinnegati o emarginati, sono considerati in una luce positiva, portatori di visione del mondo che va al di fuori degli stereotipi. Così facendo, il regista critica ciò che è “normale”, sottolineandone gli aspetti assurdi e le nevrosi che lo caratterizzano. Dopo aver analizzato la biografia del regista e le influenze che lo hanno formato, si cercherà di identificare il ruolo dell'outsider, figura a cui tutti i suoi personaggi fanno riferimento. Si analizzeranno quindi le loro carattristiche principali, per poi comprendere come essi si rapportino al mondo che li circonda.

During World War II, it was discovered that when lead was added to double-base propellants, it produced beneficial burn rate phenomena. Specifically, the propellant burn rate first increased unexpectedly at low pressures, then the burn rate became independent of pressure, followed lastly by “mesa burning” where the burn rate actually decreased with increasing pressure. This results in a beneficial negative feedback mechanism. Over the past 75 years, researchers have explored different lead complexes to achieve better propellant performance. However, over the last decade, research has shifted to finding an alternative to using lead as an additive to reduce toxicity. Until the attempts detailed herein, researchers had not, to our knowledge attempted to combine double-base propellant stabilizers with various metals to achieve these desired results. In doing so, we prepared two lead complexes, Tetrakis (µ3-(4-methyl-3-nitrophenyl imido lead (II))) 1, and Bis(dinitrophenyl imido lead(II)) 2, that were synthesized by reacting lead bis(trimethylsilyl)amide with a common double-base propellant stabilizer 2-nitrodiphenylamine (NDPA) and 4-methyl-3-nitroaniline. Both complexes formed from protolysis of the trimethylsilylamide ligand by the acidic proton of the amine, and crystallized from tetrahydrofuran (THF). Bomb calorimetry coupled with crystal density structure determined that 1 has a very high energy density of 74.1 MJ/L, more than three times the energy density of conventional nitroamine explosives, whereas 2 was lower at 38.2 MJ/L. The structure, charge and characterization of 1 and 2 are discussed. However, each complex is air sensitive making burn rate experimentation infeasible, so any possible changes to the propellant as an additive remained undetermined. Attempts to use of tin, zinc, or bismuth bis(trimethyl)amides in place of lead, were unsuccessfully characterized, although reactions were likely observed.

En 2005, les autorités municipales de la capitale burkinabé (Ouagadougou) ont entrepris, avec le soutien de la Banque mondiale, l'application d'un schéma de gestion des déchets afin de réorganiser cette filière. La ville a ainsi été dotée de centres intermédiaires de collecte et d'un centre d'enfouissement, de traitement et de valorisation des déchets. L'espace urbain a été subdivisé en douze territoires de pré-collecte. Ceux-ci ont été concédés, suite à un appel d'offres, aux groupements d'intérêt économique et aux petites et moyennes entreprises. Ouagadougou est aussi reconnue au niveau international. Elle est, à travers la Brigade Verte – une association municipale de balayage des rues - , lauréate de plusieurs prix : prix Africités en 2003, Dubaï International en 2006 et Bahreïn International en 2008. Les réformes de la filière permettent aux autorités municipales de positionner Ouagadougou à l' « avant-garde » de la gestion des déchets dans la sous région ouest africaine et l'attribution des distinctions internationales sert de support à la construction d'une image officielle de Ouagadougou : « Ouaga la belle ». En conservant cette « ville vitrine » imaginaire à la réalité ouagalaise, cette thèse met en exergue les enjeux politiques de l'assainissement de l'environnement urabain à Ouagadougou. Dans la filière des déchets, ces enjeux participent au maintien d'un service de collecte à la fois « partagé » et « disputé ». Ensuite, les jeux de pré-collecteurs remettent en cause la philosophie véhiculée par le schéma : la persistance d'un « système composite », l'effacement des limites des territoires de pré-collecte et la fin du concept de « quartier propre ». Enfin, les réformes du système de gestion des déchets – par les choix techniques, la répartition spatiale des centres de collecte et des logiques des pré-collecteurs – permettent d'observer une inégalité d'accès au service de collecte et une discrimination sociale quant à l'exposition aux nuisances liées aux déchets à « Ouaga la belle ».

Cette thèse se propose d'aborder les modes de constitution des espaces publics à Ouagadougou. La capitale burkinabè connaît depuis les années 2000 une série d'évènements qui accélèrent les mutations urbaines: un projet urbain ambitieux pour le centre-ville qui entraîne la délocalisation de quelques 12500 habitants et donne à l'État l'occasion de diffuser de nouvelles normes urbaines; l'installation de la présidence et d'une nouvelle zone administrative dans le sud de la ville qui donne à Ouagadougou une double centralité ; l'incendie du Grand marché qui modifie non seulement la vie de nombreuses familles, mais aussi les parcours urbains quotidiens de tous les Ouagalais. Ces événements sont l’occasion d’observer les rapports ville-État dans la gestion de la capitale, lieu de confrontation et d’interaction entre la population et le pouvoir, dont l’histoire nous révèle le rôle prépondérant du politique dans sa construction. Ils sont aussi l’occasion, conjointement à l’étude de six zones de la capitale et de leur paysage, d’étudier les pratiques et les représentations qu’ont les citadins de la ville, leurs modes d’habiter, les facteurs d’évolution de leur appréhension de la cité et de la construction collective des espaces de vie. Nous avons mis en évidence l’importance de la valeur de l’espace urbain habitée dans la construction des identités citadines, et nous avons montré combien les mutations urbaines et sociales en cours pouvaient être propices au processus de citadinisation des habitants de la ville et aussi à l’émergence d’espaces publics.

This doctoral program of research systematically estimated the global disease burden of diabetes-related foot disease (DFD), investigated factors contributing to the burden, and explored cost-effective ways to reduce the burden. Through four studies, this thesis identified DFD as a comparatively large and growing cause of global and national disease burden, identified several modifiable factors that reduce ulcer healing time in a real-world cohort, and provided novel economic evidence on the cost-effectiveness of implementing guideline-based care in clinical practice to potentially reduce future burdens globally. This research provides important new evidence, and a solid foundation for future research to reduce the burden.

This empirical study examines the question of why the United States persisted in enacting unilateral sanctions during the 1990s, given the increasing constraints, particularly by the European Union, in trade and investment policy. It selects the Helms-Burton Act of 1996 as its case study, a bill that not only tightened the long-standing American embargo against Cuba, but also incorporated extraterritorial aspects that purported to regulate third countries' legitimate rights to trade with that island nation. The European Union was particularly disturbed by the bill's extraterritoriality, and took the decision to request a WTO Dispute Settlement Panel. Out of concern that their dispute may irreparably damage the fledgling WTO, Washington and Brussels embarked on lengthy bilateral negotiations that resulted in an accord that suspended the WTO panel. As the United States did not implement the requisite changes to Helms-Burton, the agreement remains inchoate. This thesis argues that Helms-Burton was a particularly ill-conceived piece of legislation. It strives to understand why the United States acted in this irrational manner by opening up the 'black box' of the state to examine internal constraints on the formation of foreign policy. Putnam's two-level game provides the analytic framework within which the thesis evaluates the simultaneous responses of domestic (Level II) and international (Level I) influences. The thesis investigates the domestic American politics that led to the passage of Helms-Burton, and the intergovernmental tensions at play in the EU's decision to request a WTO panel, both Level II. It then examines the protagonists' strategies at the Level I international bargaining table, where statesmen are simultaneously constrained by what other nations will accept and by what domestic constituencies will ratify. It concludes with an analysis of how the EU successfully overcame its Level II national preferences to ratify the agreement, whilst the US defaulted. This thesis argues that Brussels' mounting of a WTO action was crucial in bringing the United States to the negotiating table and that the EU won the greater gains in these negotiations.

Esta dissertação analisa as descrições populacionais escritas por Richard Francis Burton entre os anos de 1849 e 1869, publicadas em seus relatos de viagem sobre as regiões da Índia, Península Arábica, África Oriental, Central e Ocidental, e Brasil (viagens realizadas entre 1847 e 1867). O objetivo deste trabalho é notar as transformações nestas descrições e relacioná-las ao lugar de autoridade, à experiência da viagem e à alguns conceitos oriundos da etnologia e antropologia inglesa por volta deste período. A hipótese é que estes elementos interagem na construção do texto do autor e que a compreensão do conteúdo destas descrições torna-se bastante mais efetiva quando se considera esta interação. As posições ambíguas de Burton em especial quanto aos debates entre opções teóricas monogênicas e poligênicas tornam-se mais compreensíveis a partir do ponto de vista que analisa suas descrições através da observação destes três elementos.
This dissertation analyses the populational descriptions written by Richard Francis Burton between 1849 and 1869, published in his books of travel above the regions of India, Arabic Peninsula, East, Central and West Africa, and Brazil (travels achieved between 1847-1867). The aim of this work is to note the transformations in these descriptions and connect them with the authority position, the experience of each travel, and the production of British ethnology and anthropology around those years. The hypothesis is that these elements interact in the construction of the author’s writings, and that the understanding of these descriptions’ contents become much more effective when this interaction is considered. Burton’s ambiguous positions, specially on the debates between monogenic and poligenic theoretic options, become more understandable when observed by the point of view which analyses his descriptions throughout the observation of these three elements.

This research conducts a narratological study of Tim Burton’s films in the light of the narrative theory of Vladimir Propp. It is to analyze in the oeuvre of Burton, analogous procedures to those of the wonderful tale such as described by Propp. It also pays attention to the matters that interconnect the Proppian wonderful world to the fantastic burthonian world. It seeks to understand how a reinterpretation in the cinematographic context of Tim Burton films create a connection with the morphological structure of the wonderful of V. Propp. The conducted literature reviews involve authoritative works on the fantastic cinema, the animation cinema in general and particularly the cinema of Tim Burton. The corpus of the research is composed by the Corpse Bride – 2005 of Tim Burton; The establishment of the corpus was based on the criterion of selection of the animation films that stand out in the oeuvre of Tim Burton. Methodologically, the research is bibliographical and comparative. The main theoretical reference is Propp's own narratological theory, which always seeks the wonderful in his works. This research also takes into consideration the masterful model work of Haroldo de Campos, Morphology of Macunaíma, which presents and reinterprets the proppian model. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that little research has been made on hybrid wonderful tale to the animation cinema. It is also proposing a new unfolding of the proppian semiology, turning it this time to the universe of visual discourse and digital manipulation
Esta pesquisa realiza um estudo narratológico em filmes de Tim Burton à luz da teoria narrativa de Vladimir Propp. Trata-se de analisar na obra de Burton, procedimentos análogos àqueles do conto maravilhoso tais como descritos por Propp.Atenta-se também para as pautas que interconectam o mundo maravilhosoproppiano ao mundo fantástico burthoniano. Busca-se entender como uma reinterpretação no contexto cinematográfico das películas de Tim Burton criam uma conexão com a estrutura morfológica do maravilhoso de V. Propp. A revisão bibliográfica efetuada aquienvolve trabalhos abalizados sobre o cinema fantástico, o cinema de animação em geral e o cinema de Tim Burton em particular. O corpus da pesquisa é composto pela obra cinematográfica A Noiva Cadáver – 2005 do diretor Tim Burton; O estabelecimento do corpus pautou-se pelo critério de seleção do filme de animação que despontam no conjunto da obra de Tim Burton. Metodologicamente, a pesquisa é bibliográfica e comparativa. O principal referencial teórico é a própria teoria narratológica de Propp que sempre busca o maravilhoso em suas obras. Este trabalho também leva em consideração o modelo da obra magistral de Haroldo de Campos, Morfologia do Macunaíma, que apresenta e reinterpreta o modelo proppiano. A relevância do trabalho está no fato de que poucas pesquisas foram realizadas sobre conto maravilhoso hibrido ao cinema de animação. Está também em propor um novo desdobramento da semiologia proppiana, voltando-a desta vez ao universo do discurso visual e da manipulação digital

Ce travail est consacré aux pratiques de soins, selon une lecture pluridimensionnelle, à partir de plusieurs études de cas. Les différentes approches donnent un éclairage sur les demandes locales de soins et les réponses thérapeutiques variées qui sont proposées en fonction des contextes de maladie et de nombreux référents d'ordre cognitif ou matériel. A partir de l'exposé et l'analyse d'un cas de maladie et des recours thérapeutiques sollicités, des caractéristiques saillantes des itinéraires thérapeutiques sont décrites dans une visée critique. Cette appoche diachronique est complétée par une approche transversale des faits locaux de santé : premièrement, par une analyse fine, mise en contexte linguistique, des usages thérapeutiques traditionnels, biomédicaux ou d'ordre syncrétique; deuxièmement, à travers une description des enjeux liés aux actions et interactions dans le champ de la santé, avec une ouverture sur des théorisations d'ordre épistémologique.
