Recent advances in design, sensing and control have led to aerial robots that offer great promise in a range of real-world applications. However, one critical open question centres on how to improve the energetic efficiency of aerial robots so that they can be useful in practical situations. This review paper provides a survey on small-scale aerial robots (i.e. less than 1 m 2 area foot print, and less than 3 kg weight) from the point of view of energetics. The paper discusses methods to improve the efficiency of aerial vehicles, and reports on recent findings by the authors and other groups on modelling the impact of aerodynamics for the purpose of building energy-aware motion planners and controllers.

Building energy is a priority in the European Union's energy efficiency directives. In line with this, the EnerOptima module implemented within the framework of the Earth Energy Competence Center Project aims to optimize the building energy of existing buildings. The selection of the communication of the measuring and control modules to be implemented in the project requires great care, as it determines the quality of the IoT network. The article deals with the communication options used in different building energetics and their comparison. The purpose of this article is to compare communication protocols that are well-suited to the project and to select the optimal one for the project.

Teotihuacan underwent an urban renewal during the Tlamimilolpa phase (AD 250–350) in which more than 2,000 apartment compounds were constructed to accommodate its estimated 100,000 residents. Although the orderly layout and canonical orientation of the city imply top-down planning, growing evidence suggests a bottom-up process of urban transformation. This study combines architectural energetics with archaeometric analysis of nonlocal construction materials (lime plaster and andesitic cut stone blocks) to examine the labor organization behind the construction of the apartment compounds. The results of the energetic analysis suggest that residents relied on labor forces external to their compounds, whereas materials analysis indicates that the procurement, transportation, and production of building material were centrally organized and thus indicative of a state labor tax. Based on these results, I argue that compounds were assembled through corporate group labor exchange or communal (neighborhood-level) labor cooperation/obligation, with differing degrees of support from the state labor tax. Apartment compound construction was not uniform but rather a diverse process in which state labor mobilization, communal labor obligations, and corporate labor exchange were articulated in various ways.

Abstract It is well known that the thermal performance of a building is influenced by the solutions that define the building’s envelope. In the case of industrial buildings, due to the use of different envelope solutions (e.g. sandwich panels, prefabricated concrete panels etc.), the types of thermal bridge details are often different in comparison to those currently found in residential, office and administrative buildings. Thus, several numerical simulations were performed by analysing details of envelope elements identified at industrial buildings, especially the areas prone to intensified heat flow (joint areas, intersections, glazed surfaces, and others.). Therefore, the paper will present the assessment of thermal bridge details for four industrial buildings having various destinations. The effects of two-dimensional heat transfer in envelope elements, such as windows, walls, foundations, roofs and doors, will be evaluated. The impact of the thermal bridges will be measured by verifying to what extent the level of thermal performance of each envelope component meets the thermal resistance requirements, as well as the building envelope ensures the global heat transfer coefficient for each of the studied cases. A series of conclusions and recommendations will be provided for specialists and designers in the building energetics field.

The causes of obesity are complex and multifactorial. We propose that one unconsidered but likely important factor is the energetic demand of brain development, which could constrain energy available for body growth and other functions, including fat deposition. Humans are leanest during early childhood and regain body fat in later childhood. Children reaching this adiposity rebound (AR) early are at risk for adult obesity. In aggregate data, the developing brain consumes a lifetime peak of 66% of resting energy expenditure in the years preceding the AR, and brain energy use is inversely related to body weight gain from infancy until puberty. Building on this finding, we hypothesize that individual variation in childhood brain energy expenditure will help explain variation in the timing of the AR and subsequent obesity risk. The idea that brain energetics constrain fat deposition is consistent with evidence that genes that elevate BMI are expressed in the brain and mediate a trade-off between the size of brain structures and BMI. Variability in energy expended on brain development and function could also help explain widely documented inverse relationships between the BMI and cognitive abilities. We estimate that variability in brain energetics could explain the weight differential separating children at the 50th and 70th BMI-for-age centiles immediately before the AR. Our model proposes a role for brain energetics as a driver of variation within a population’s BMI distribution and suggests that educational interventions that boost global brain energy use during childhood could help reduce the burden of obesity.

Abstract The challenge of storing energy efficiently and sustainably is highly prominent within modern scientific investigations. Due to the ongoing trend of miniaturization, the design of expressly quantum storage devices is itself a crucial task within current quantum technological research. Here we provide a transparent analytic model of a two-component quantum battery, composed of a charger and an energy holder, which is driven by a short laser pulse. We provide simple expressions for the energy stored in the battery, the maximum amount of work which can be extracted, both the instantaneous and the average powers, and the relevant charging times. This allows us to discuss explicitly the optimal design of the battery in terms of the driving strength of the pulse, the coupling between the charger and the holder, and the inevitable energy loss into the environment. We anticipate that our theory can act as a helpful guide for the nascent experimental work building and characterizing the first generation of truly quantum batteries.

The aim of the diploma thesis is to evaluate the energy assessment and elaboration of energy performance certificates of the building. The building is an apartment building in Vítkov. The theoretical part deals with centralized heat supply. The calculation part contains a more detailed description of individual relationships and calculation procedures that are used to process energy performance certificates of the building. Furthermore, proposals for measures to improve the energy performance of buildings. In this part there is also a proposal of individual equipment of the new boiler room and thermographic measurement. In the project part there is an energy assessment assessing the building in two variants with individual heat sources. The evaluation is carried out from an energy, economic and environmental aspect.

La prédiction de la consommation énergétique des bâtiments est aujourd’hui un point-clé de la transition énergétique, qui vise à atténuer les effets du réchauffement climatique. La quantité de données disponible étant de plus en plus importante, les modèles prédictifs dits « data-driven » voient leur performances croître constamment. Parmi ces modèles, ceux issus du Machine Learning sont probablement les plus efficaces. Au sein de cette thèse, nous proposons de réaliser un état de l’art complet des contributions du Machine Learning à la la prédiction de la consommation énergétique des bâtiments, via deux axes principaux : l’étape de pré-traitement des données préalable à l’utilisation d’un modèle de Machine Learning et les modèles en tant que tels, jusqu’aux plus complexes qui sont les réseaux neuronaux profonds. Malgré les performances de ces derniers, prédire avec précision la consommation d’électricité lorsque de fortes variations dans le temps apparaissent reste un défi. Pour le relever, nous proposons d’explorer deux voies : l’utilisation de fonctions de pertes soft-DTW et l’ajout de variables exogènes. L’application, à des données réelles, d’un réseau neuronal résiduel LSTM avec la fonction de perte soft-DTW, mène à une amélioration significative via notamment une meilleure compréhension des évolutions associées aux séries temporelles étudiées, en particulier pour les pics. Cependant, les métriques d’erreur classiques se révèlent insuffisantes pour évaluer et valider ou non le modèle prédictif. Nous introduisons donc une analyse de matrice de confusion et deux nouvelles métriques d’erreur : l’erreur de localisation temporelle du pic et l’erreur d’amplitude du pic basée sur l’algorithme DTW. Nos résultats révèlent que le soft-DTW surpasse les fonctions de perte MSE et MAE avec une réduction des erreurs associées à ces métriques, menant à une meilleure précision du modèle global. Afin de pénaliser la fonction de perte soft-DTW, un terme additionnel est introduit parmi l’erreur MSE, l’erreur MAE et l’indice de distorsion temporelle. Les résultats montrent que la pénalité MSE est la plus efficace pour réduire les problèmes de sur-estimation des pics et la réduction de l’effet dit « aigu » de ces pics. Concernant les variables exogènes, leur ajout combiné à la fonction de perte soft-DTW peut améliorer de façon significative notre modèle de prédiction : ainsi, les variables dites calendaires (temporelles) améliorent généralement la performance, en particulier si leur corrélation de Pearson avec la variable cible est importante. Cependant, si cette corrélation est relativement faible, l’inclusion de variables calendaires a un effet négatif sur la performance du modèle. The ongoing energy transition, pivotal to mitigate global warming, could significantly benefit from advances in building energy consumption prediction. With the advent of big data, data-driven models are increasingly effective in forecasting tasks and machine learning is probably the most efficient method to build such predictive models nowadays. In this work, we provide a comprehensive review of machine learning techniques for forecasting, regarding preprocessing as well as state-of-the-art models such as deep neural networks. Despite the achievements of state-of-art models, accurately predicting high-fluctuation electricity consumption still remains a challenge. To tackle this challenge, we propose to explore two paths: the utilization of soft-DTW loss functions and the inclusion of exogenous variables. By applying the soft-DTW loss function with a residual LSTM neural network on a real dataset, we observed significant improvements in capturing the patterns of high-fluctuation load series, especially in peak prediction. However, conventional error metrics prove insufficient in adequately measuring this ability. We therefore introduce confusion matrix analysis and two new error metrics: peak position error and peak load error based on the DTW algorithm. Our findings reveal that soft-DTW outperforms MSE and MAE loss functions with lower peak position and peak load error. We also incorporate soft-DTW loss function with MSE, MAE, and Time Distortion Index. The results show that combining the MSE loss function performs the best and helps alleviate the problem of overestimated and sharp peaks problems occured. By adding exogenous variables with soft-DTW loss functions, the inclusion of calendar variables generally enhances the model’s performance, particularly when these variables exhibit higher Pearson’s correlation coefficients with the target variable. However, when the correlation between the calendar variables and the historical load patterns is relatively low, their inclusion has a negative impact on the model’s performance. A similar relationship is observed with weather variables

A présent, les bâtiments résidentiels et commerciaux sont en phase de devenir le secteur le plus consommateur d’énergie dans de nombreux pays, comme par exemple en France. Diverses recherches ont été menées de manière à réduire la consommation énergétiques des bâtiments et augmenter leur confort thermique. Parmi tous les différentes approches, la technologie du stockage de chaleur latent se distingue par une très bonne capacité à stocker la chaleur afin de réduire les écarts entre la disponibilité et la demande d’énergie. Dans le cadre de l’un de nos projets, nous avons l’intention d’intégrer au design des murs des bâtiments un type de brique transparente remplie de matériaux à changement de phase (MCP). Les MCP à l’intérieur de la brique sont soumis à des changements de phase liquide-solide. Cette thèse s’attaque à la problématique du processus de fusion au sein de la brique. Au cours de cette thèse, une méthode expérimentale non-intrusive a été développée afin d’améliorer les techniques expérimentales existantes. La vélocimétrie des images des particules (VIP) et la fluorescence induite par laser (FIL) ont été couplées pour étudier la convection naturelle et la distribution de la température. Puisqu’aucun thermocouple n’a été inséré au sein de la brique, le processus de la fusion a été considéré sans perturbation. Les résultats montrent que cette conception expérimentale a un avenir prometteur, même si elle reste à améliorer. Par la suite, nous présentons deux simulations numériques. Ces simulations se fondent sur la méthode de Boltzmann sur réseau à temps de relaxation multiple (LBM MRT), employée pour résoudre le champ de vitesse, et sur la méthode de différences finies, pour obtenir la distribution de la température. La méthode d’enthalpie a quant à elle été utilisée pour simuler le changement de phase. Les simulations en deux dimensions et trois dimensions ont toutes deux été réalisées avec succès. Point important, ces simulations numériques ont été développées en langage C pour tourner spécifiquement sur un processeur graphique (GPU), afin d’augmenter l’efficacité de la simulation en profitant de la capacité de calcul d’un GPU. Les résultats des simulations concordent bien avec les résultats de nos expériences et avec les résultats analytiques publiés
The domestic and commercial buildings are currently becoming the major sector that consumes the biggest share of the energy in many countries, for example in France. Various researches have been carried out in order to reduce the energy consumption and increase the thermal comfort of builds. Among all the possible approaches, the latent heat storage technology distinguishes itself because of its excellent heat storage ability which can be used to efficiently reduce the discrepancy between the energy consumption and supply. In one of our project, we intend to integrate a type of transparent brick filled with phase change material (PCM) into the buildings' wall design. The PCM inside the brick undergoes the solid-liquid phase change. This dissertation addresses the important issues of the melting process inside the brick. In this dissertation, a non-intrusive experimental method was proposed to improve the existing experiment technique. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) and the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) were coupled to investigate the natural convection and the temperature distribution. Because there was no thermocouple installed inside the brick, the melting process was thus considered to be less impacted. The results showed that this experimental design has a promising future, yet still needs to be improved. Two sets of efficient numerical simulations were also presented in this dissertation. The simulations were based on the thermal lattice Boltzmann method (TLBM), where the natural convection got solved by the LBM and the temperature equation was solved by the finite difference scheme. The enthalpy method was employed to simulate the phase change. Both the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional configurations were successfully simulated. Moreover, the simulation programs were specifically developed - using the C language - to be run on the graphic processing unit (GPU), in order to increase the simulation efficiency. The simulation results demonstrated a good agreement with our experimental results and the published analytical results

Resumen
The work deals with the impact assessment of selected parameters of residential buildings on their energy performance. Within the application of the theory of statistics database of selected residential buildings is analyzed in terms of different features that characterize it. In particular, the thermal insulating properties and individual sub-items in the energy balance are analyzed. Then the measured rate dependence of selected parameters affecting energy performance is examined using correlation and regression analysis. The results are applied in the development of computational tools for evaluating energy flows in the building.

The projections are clear: by 2050, global energy demand expected to double. We know that the energy plants will not be sufficient to meet demand, or to compensate the decrease of fossil energy. Meanwhile, CO2 emissions must be halved to limit global warming. To resolve this dilemma, the only way is to implement energy efficiency solutions that can do it better and with fewer resources. In scientific terms, energy efficiency is the ratio of the energy consumed on the energy produced. Energy efficiency has become one of the first challenges of public policies; it aims to bring all economic sectors, companies and individuals to use less energy while controlling it. It is in this issue that Schneider Electric is trying to develop its services. The study focused specifically on the development of distance energetic analysis tools. The first part focuses on the development of relevant counting plans. More or less detailed they would study at distance behavior and performance of a building as a whole and across its various facilities. To ensure efficiency, the work has to be done by finding the right balance between investment and relevant measurement points. In the second part data have been analysed through a different point of view. Why not try to represent the energy behavior of a building in a mathematical way, using simple functions. So once this reference has been built it becomes easy to monitor and control any drifts of the system. Many tools can still be developed to improve this distant observation. The idea is to bring together all these data into a global energy management tool and make this one as independent as possible in both energy and cost-saving concerns.

Resumen
Abstract The dynamics of a class of translating media with an arbitrarily varying length is investigated. The tension in the media arising from their longitudinal accelerations is incorporated. The dynamic stability of the continuous media relative to the inertial and moving coodinate systems is studied from the energy standpoint. The exact expressions for the rates of change of energies of the media are derived and interpreted from both the control volume and system viewpoints. The monotonic behavior of the energy of vibration of the translating media during extrusion and retraction is affected by their jerks rather than accelerations. Examples including a robotic arm through a prismatic joint and an elevator hoist cable in a high rise building validate the analysis. In particular, the results explain an inherent “unstable shortening cable behavior” in elevator industry.

In the branch structure of emissions from stationary sources prevails energetics, building industry, agrifood sector and marketing fuel stations, The following positions are occupied by transport companies and by wood processing enterprises, who records a significant increase.

Resumen
Bacteriophage T4 is one of the most common and complex of the tailed viruses that infect host bacteria using an intriguing contractile tail assembly. Despite extensive progress in resolving the structure of T4, the dynamics of the injection machinery remains largely unknown. This paper contributes a first model of the injection machinery that is driven by elastic energy stored in a structure known as the sheath. The sheath is composed of helical strands of protein that suddenly collapse from an energetic, extended conformation prior to infection to a relaxed, contracted conformation during infection. We employ Kirchhoff rod theory to simulate the nonlinear dynamics of a single protein strand coupled to a model for the remainder of the virus, including the coupled translation and rotation of the head (capsid), neck and tail tube. Doing so provides an important building block towards the future goal of modeling the entire sheath structure which is composed of six interacting helical protein strands. The resulting numerical model exposes fundamental features of the injection machinery including the time scale and energetics of the infection process, the nonlinear conformational change experienced by the sheath, and the contribution of hydrodynamic drag on the head (capsid).

Resumen
The structural stability and energetics for small copper and gold clusters Cun and Aun (n = 21–56) were investigated using an effective Monte Carlo simulated annealing method, which employs the Aggregate-Volume-Bias Monte Carlo (AVBMC) algorithm. Incorporated in the Monte Carlo method, is an efficient Embedded Atom Method (EAM) potential developed by the authors. In general agreement with previous empirical studies, the lowest-energy copper structures adapt a single icosahedral structural motif, with pentagonal bipyramid geometry as the building block. However, contrary to studies that describe gold as less symmetric, this work demonstrates that gold clusters adapt both an icosahedral and icositetrahedral structural motifs with many clusters having symmetric geometries.

Resumen
Building on Kazakhstan’s strong nomadic values of kinship, the country’s robust network of civil society organizations (CSOs) works closely with the government to support vulnerable groups and tackle environmental issues. This brief outlines how CSOs sprang up after the country’s independence in 1991 and mainly depended on state funds as they quickly grew. Subject to stringent financial reporting rules, some, however, struggle with financial management and planning. Explaining how they are exploring new sources of income and using social media to raise awareness, it shows how ADB and other development partners work alongside Kazakhstan’s energetic and resilient CSOs.
