Resumen
While the majority of literature written in regard to artist Romaine Brooks has focused on her portraiture of cross-dressing women, I intend to focus on other aspects of her oeuvre which are often neglected. Therefore, I will examine works depicting women produced or exhibited by Brooks during the years 1910 and 1911 when her output was at its most varied. I have divided these works into four different categories: nudes, interior scenes, balcony scenes, and portraits. These paintings prove that while Brooks painted in a traditional fashion, she also subtly challenged the role of women in art and society.

An empirical analysis on the applicability of multigrid techniques to system modeling using system identification techniques is presented. Multigrid with the Toeplitz approximation algorithm is used to model an infinite impulse response (FIR) system with a finite impulse response (FIR) model. Matrix analysis experiments are conducted on the Toeplitz iteration matrix. A comparison of alternative multigrid operators for solving the system modeling problem is presented. The extension of multigrid techniques to system modeling of odd order filters is explored. Computer simulations are developed for analyzing the effectiveness of multigrid techniques in system modeling.

Resumen
The thesis explores architectural potential and experience in the theatre of Peter Brook (1925-). The importance of his thought, writings and theatrical creation in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries reaches far beyond the question of theatre. It prepares a ground for exploring the ethical and poetic dimensions of architecture. Refusing to reduce the role of theatre to making 'pictures,' Brook's theatre strives to offer us ephemeral experience in space and to engage us with the power of individual and communal imagination. What is explored and can be learned from Brook's theatre cannot be considered as a 'practical prescription' or methodology, but rather as a call to an incessant quest. It offers an entry to rethinking the role of architecture not as a finished design, but as a phenomenon that emerges through an 'event' and engages its inhabitants and their being in the world. The dissertation, seen through the lens of an architect, embarks on a journey into Brook's theatre in which it unravels crucial concepts from his discourse and theatrical experiments offering insights of great value to architects and architectural creation alike. The idea of "empty space," the relationship between visible and invisible, and the notion of 'Immediate Theatre' resonate throughout the investigation. Along the way, I study three theatrical plays: Orghast at the tombs of the Persian kings at Persepolis and Naqsh-e-Rustam (Iran, 1971); The Mahabharata at the Callet Quarry in Boulbon (France, 1985); and Eleven and Twelve at the theatre of Bouffes du Nord (Paris, 2009). The investigation reveals the unusual approach toward places of performance, the exploratory process of creation, and the audience's involvement in space/time. In the view of this thesis, Brook's theatrical creation invokes an architecture that temporalizes space and recognizes the 'present moment,' immersing its participants in a wholeness of narrative, play and place.

A petrographic study of upper Devonian sandstones (Endicott and Hammond Terranes), Philip Smith Mountains and Arctic quadrangles, Brooks Range, Alaska, shows that the sand-sized detritus was derived from two petrographic provenances. Detrital modes, calculated from point counts of thin sections, show that the provenance for the Devonian clastic wedge (Endicott Terrane) was a recycled orogenic belt with major components of quartz, chert, and lithic fragments. Three petrofacies are distinguished. Their distribution indicates compositional changes vertically and laterally which reflect changing compositions in the source area. A petrographically different provenance supplied the sandstones that overlie the Skajit Limestone (Hammond Terrane). Characterized by high feldspar and abundant volcanic rock fragments, this petrofacies indicates first-cycle deposition close to the source area. A magmatica arc provenance is suggested.

Resumen
This thesis examines perspectives of the two influential U.S. think tanks, the Brookings Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations, on Turkish foreign policy under the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (JDP) from 2002 to 2010. It attempts to analyze the perceptions of the noted institutions about the JDP&rsquo
s foreign policy by referencing their reports, articles, interviews and seminars. The study had four aims. First, it aims to analyze the JDP&rsquo
s foreign policy in the eyes of the two think tanks. Second, it shows the objective of the two institutions for shaping the framework of the discussions on the United States-Turkey relations and Turkish foreign policy by emphasizing the epistemic community. Third, this thesis intends to clarify divergences and convergences in the perceptions of the two think tanks. Fourth, it indicates the continuity, change and rupture in the JDP&rsquo
s foreign policy choices from the viewpoint of the Brookings Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations. Consequently, the thesis states that &ldquo
the given framework&rdquo
in the relations between the United States and Turkey has been largely determined by the U.S.&rsquo
activities.

Mueller, Andrew. "“Art Hurts”: Intimacy, Difficulty, and Distance in Gwendolyn Brooks’s “Two Dedications”". Thesis, University of Oregon, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/19301.

Resumen
In this thesis, I examine Gwendolyn Brooks’s diptych poems “Two Dedications” from her 1968 collection In the Mecca. Critical accounts of “Two Dedications” cast the poems as fixed oppositions between “frivolous” Western art and inspiring, communal black art. I propose that such binaries are reductive and overlook the intellectual benefits Brooks locates in abstract modernist art. Using Ezra Pound’s theories of modernist difficulty, Walter Benjamin’s concept of artistic “aura,” and the Black Arts Movement (BAM) manifestoes of Ron Karenga and Larry Neal, I argue that Brooks’s poems demonstrate the benefits of both abstract Western art and representational BAM art. Specifically, Brooks suggests that both types of art provide avenues for self-determination and liberation from institutional conventions.

Kraemer, Michael William. "DIVISIONS BETWEEN ARKANSANS IN THE BROOKS-BAXTER WAR". UKnowledge, 2012. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/history_etds/4.

Resumen
Many historians have failed to consider seriously the role of the Brooks-Baxter War of 1874 in ending Reconstruction in Arkansas. Of those who have, they have not examined participants in the conflict nor attempted a robust study to determine who fought in the conflict. This thesis examines the soldiers and officers of the rival armies of Joseph Brooks and Elisha Baxter. It surveys the participants' class, race, professions, places of birth, and especially places of residence at the time of the conflict. This analysis of the Brooks-Baxter War reaffirms other historians' work on the fall of Reconstruction, while finding unique characteristics to Arkansas's redemption, like substantial support from white Arkansans for upholding Reconstruction and instances of black Arkansans supporting the redeemer army of Elisha Baxter. It concludes that Arkansas redemption was typical of other redemptions in the South in the mid-1870s, insofar as the powerful role that the state Democratic Party and Democratic elites played in ending Reconstruction in the state. The Brooks-Baxter War shows, however, that redemption in Arkansas had a more moderate face in that explicit, naked white supremacist rhetoric was not as apparent in the overthrow of Reconstruction there as in some other Deep Southern states.

The synagogue has always played a crucial role in the life of the Jewish people. It is the embodiment of a religion which dates its proud past as stemming from the beginning of creation. Nevertheless, the passing of time has not diminished the people's fervor in the observation of age-old customs, traditions, and laws. However. the Jewish people are flexible enough to acknowledge the changes inherent in the passing of time. This concept of time. a respect for the past and an awareness of the present with a projection for the future, is paramount in the architectural development of the synagogue. Throughout the years. synagogue planners have considered this melding of the present with the past, modernity with antiquity as a reflection of the needs of its people at a given time. Fundamental to the design of my synagogue is what I consider its three-fold purpose: a House of Prayer, a House of Study, and a House of Assembly -- all coalescing to serve the spiritual, intellectual, and social needs of the people. It will consider the necessity of continuity without sacrificing the need for versatility and adaptability, all within the parameters of its utilitarian needs. While ancient symbols, traditional artifacts, and alter objects should be visible, even that which is not visible but revered even more will be lovingly, albeit subtly. evident. Thus. G- d's presence will be manifested within the symbolic design concepts, the lofty structural innovations, the light and shadow imagery. The most modern artistic and architectural techniques will be utilized to create a beautiful, utilitarian, versatile synagogue, adaptable to the changing needs of its community. Thus, this synagogue can play a most important role in keeping our religion timely and timeless.

Daniel, Jennifer Sim. "The Excursion: A Screenplay Adaptation of Francis Brooke’s The Excursion". Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2011. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2254.

Resumen
My master’s thesis consists of a screenplay adaptation of the Eighteenth Century novel The Excursion by Francis Brooke, as well as an Introduction that details the writing process of the main text. In order to prepare this manuscript, I began with a study of both Francis Brooke and her novel as part of Dr. Judith Slagle’s Eighteenth Century British Novel course and developed my work to completion through independent research on and application of my findings on the screenwriting genre. The concluding product is a three-act screenplay which maintains the original period setting, speech, and costuming while adding such contemporary elements as 20th century music. Such a combination of time periods enables the stillness of the page to become the action of the screen even as it highlights the universal themes of Brooke’s original text.

Resumen
The nature and extent of industrialisation in the Ironbridge Gorge during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is investigated. Three generations of the Brooke family made changes to the landscape, buildings, and industrial infrastructure of the Manor of Madeley in the period between the dissolution of the monasteries and the English Civil War. The Brookes developed coal mining, ironworking and steelmaking on their estate, and further afield; they introduced innovative technology and eventually operated one of the largest ironmaking concerns in the country. The wealth they created enabled the development of their country house and associated designed landscapes. The Brooke family were Catholics, and at times actively resistant to the Protestant hegemony. This thesis examines the role that their Catholicism played in informing the actions that they undertook, and the extent to which it was part of their social and cultural identity. The material evidence of the landscape and buildings, the archaeology of the industrial installations, and the documentary evidence for their social, political and religious networks are examined. The ways in which the three generations negotiated the complexities of a rapidly-changing society suggests that identities were nuanced and shifting: variously and simultaneously the Brookes were gentry, industrialists, Catholics, courtiers and political actors. Some aspects of these identities are reflected in the archaeological record, but many are not; an interdisciplinary approach is therefore adopted to enable some of the more intangible aspects of the Brookes’ identity to be revealed.

Brooks, Heather Margaret. "Axial capacity of piles supported on intermediate geomaterials". Thesis, Montana State University, 2008. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2008/brooks/BrooksH0808.pdf.

Texto completo
Resumen
Pile foundations used to support bridges and other structures are designed and installed to sustain axial and lateral loads without failing in bearing capacity and without undergoing excessive movements. The axial load-carrying capacity of a driven pile is derived from friction or adhesion along the pile shaft and by compressive resistance at the pile tip. There are well established analytical methods for evaluating pile capacity and for predicting pile driving characteristics for cohesive soil, cohesionless soil, and rock. However, past experience indicates these methods may not be reliable for piles driven into intermediate geomaterials (IGMs), which often exhibit a wide array of properties with characteristics ranging from stiff or hard soil to soft weathered rock. Methods to determine the axial capacity, driving resistance, and long-term resistance of piles driven into intermediate geomaterials are not well established. Nine projects, in which piles were driven into IGMs, from the Montana Department of Transportation were analyzed. Each project contained information from CAPWAP dynamic analyses, construction records, and design reports. The purpose of any analyses, of the nine projects, was to better predict the behavior of piles in IGMs. IGMs were divided into two broad types, cohesive and cohesionless. The computer program DRIVEN is often used to predict the axial capacities of piles; however, in IGMs the design method is unreliable. Attempts were made to determine trends within the available data. Normalized resistances for shaft and toe capacities did yield slight correlations of shaft resistance to pile length in IGMs. Iterative solutions using DRIVEN to match the CAPWAP ultimate capacity did not provide meaningful trends or correlations. Slight modification of MDT\'s original DRIVEN inputs was required in most cases to match the CAPWAP ultimate capacity. Because no meaningful trends were found from analysis, other capacity calculation methods were used to determine other methods that accurately predict pile capacity within IGMs. The Washington Department of Transportation Gates formula is the most accurate method of those attempted. More research is required for further analysis of piles in IGMs.

Texto completo
Resumen
The amphilinideans and gyrocotylideans are small groups of monozoic platyhelminths parasitizing fishes and occasionally turtles. They have traditionally been placed with the cestodes because they lack a gut. Systematic relationships of the two groups are poorly understood. Eight species of amphilinideans are considered valid. A phylogenetic analysis of 46 character states comprising 34 homologous series produced a single phylogenetic tree with a consistency index value of 89%, indicating a very low degree of homoplasy. The number of genera has been reduced from six to three, in an attempt to construct a classification which reflects the phylogenetic relationships of the group. The phylogenetic relationships exhibit a fairly high degree of congruence (70%) with a currently accepted hypothesis of phylogenetic relationship of the teleosts. This implies that coevolution has occurred, although with many parasite losses and extinctions. An analysis of the biogeographic distribution of the amphilinideans using the methods of vicariance biogeography produced complete or nearly complete congruence of the distribution of amphilinideans with hypotheses of area relationship, indicating that vicariance is the best explanation for the biogeographic distribution of the group. Ten species of gyrocotylideans are recognized, of which seven were examined in this study. A phylogenetic analysis of 24 character states comprising 13 homologous series produced two trees of equal length. The consistency index for each tree is 88%, indicating a very low degree of homoplasy. The phylogenetic analysis of the gyrocotylideans has provided a summary of the current knowledge of the gyrocotylideans which can serve as a framework for further investigations. Slightly more than half of the observed associations between gyrocotylideans and holocephalans can be attributed to coevolution. Remaining associations can be attributed to colonization, but these represent recolonizations of plesiomorphic hosts. The geographic distribution of gyrocotylideans remains enigmatic, as it does not appear to reflect plate movements. It is suggested that their distribution may be pfe-Pangaean in origin. The phylogenetic analyses of the amphilinideans and gyrocotylideans have provided corroboration for a hypothesis of relationship for the Subphylum Cercomeria. Seven new characters have been identified as autapomorphies for the amphilinideans and gyrocotylideans, while an additional seven new characters support the Subclass Cestodaria and the Infrasubclass Cestoidea. Amphilinideans and gyrocotylideans both appear to be relict groups, but of different types. The amphilinideans were probably more widespread and more numerous than they are at present (i.e. they are geographic and numerical relicts). The gyrocotylideans, on the other hand, appear to have never been diverse or widespread, and are therefore phylogenetic relicts.

A taxonomia e sistemática do sistema hospedeiro/parasita, no entanto, é pouco conhecida.
Stingrays of the Potamotrygonidae family (Chondrichthyes: Myliobatoidei) are endemic elasmobranchs of river systems in the Neotropics. In these hosts a reside diverse fauna of parasite which includes many genera of tapeworms (Cestoda). Both stingrays and their cestodes are derived from marine ancestors. However, the taxonomy and systematics of this host/parasite system is poorly known. This study documents, for the first time, the molecular diversity of Potamotrygonocestus lineages by employing the direct optimization of 28S rDNA, ITS1 rDNA, Calmodulin and Cytochrome Oxidase I genes. The goal of this study is to understand the phylogenetic position of its members within a cladistic analysis. The results support the monophyly of the genus Potamotrygonocestus and recovered two main clades morphologically diagnosed based on hook morphology hook. The phylogenetic hypothesis presented supports the contention that P. chaoi and P. marajoara are junior synonyms of P. travassosi, and P. orinoconoensis should be considered a valid specie. Additionally, the results suggest that there are 14 new lineages that can be raised to the level of species. Members of Potamotrygonocestus proved to be more host specific than previously thought and, in relation to its biogeography, the phylogenetic hypothesis presented mirrors similar patterns of area association reported for many members of the Neotropical ichthyofauna. The expansion of biogeographical representativeness and inclusion of the molecular data in systematics of the genus allowed the recognition of distribution and infestation patterns that were previously unknown. This refinement could be interesting for other potamotrigonids genus parasites

The members of the Potamotrygonocestus genus (Eucestoda: Tetraphyllidea: Onchobothriidae) are parasites that infect exclusively the stingrays of the family Potamotrygonidae, which are endemic of the Neotropical region. To date, seven species are recognized for this genus (P. magdalenensis, P. travassosi, P. amazonensis, P. maurae, P. fitzgeraldae, P. chaoi and P.marajoara) and two undescribed lineages were cited in the last taxonomic revision published. The taxonomy of these parasites is traditionally based on morphometric characters and therefore relies on soft tissue structures whose observed morphology is highly dependent on the fixation method used. This, in addition to the use of a restricted number of specimens from distant localities on taxonomic studies, led researchers to believe in a low morphological variation for the genus. In this study, 1753 Potamotrygonocestus specimens were examined from almost all of the South American basins. The traditional morphometric parameters for the genus taxonomy were not useful for species diagnosis, but the discrete parameters from the morphology of the hooks were shown to be informative characters. The hooks are sclerotized structures and its shape is not dependent on the fixation of the specimen, therefore having a great potential to distinguish species. Based on the morphology of the hooks, the Potamotrygonocestus nominal species that were recognized were redescribed and four new lineages were found. Among all the taxa examined, only P. chaoi e P. marajoara still need a detailed diagnosis, because it was not possible to distinguish these two species based on the morphology of the hooks. Based on the data at hand, an inference key for species of Potamotrygonocestus is proposed based on the morphology of the hooks. Among the 32 potamotrygonids morphotypes obtained for this study, only five were not infected by Potamotrygonocestus. These hosts were restricted to the Madeira and Purus basins and for P.leopoldi from the Xingu River. The host-specificity observed for the parasite worms of marine elasmobranchs closely related to Potamotrygonocestus were nor found in this freshwater genus Additionally, more than one species of Potamotrygonocestus were found infecting the same host specimen, an occurrence never noted for this parasite taxon.

During this study, we have synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles by soft routes in aqueous media. Anatase, brookite and rutile have been obtained in pure phases, with well-defined size and morphology. Thermal treatments were conducted at temperatures ranging from 500 to 750°C to study particles sintering. We have observed the influence of initial morphology on particles sintering. We also have shown that the anatase → rutile and brookite → rutile phase transition and kinetic were modified by initial morpholgy of particules, but also by annealing gas atmosphere and by the presence of impurities on the particles. This last result was used in a second point to thermically stabilized anatase and brookite nanoparticles by lanthanum doping. Particles have been characterized by numerous techniques, such as high resolution transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analyses and differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffraction was widely used to characterize sizes, morphologies and phase transition during sintering

This dissertation analyzes the effects of Congressional redistricting in the United States using the Brookes Method, developed by R.H. Brookes, a New Zealand political scientist. The Brookes Method disaggregates electoral bias into five separate components. My analysis shows that the party winning control of the House benefits from the most prevalent component of bias but that Democrats persistently benefit from the next most prevalent component. This means that Republicans can never win the House as effectively as Democrats can. The Brookes Method also informs electoral bias pertaining to racial gerrymandering. Using the Brookes Method to evaluate three states with a history of using extremes in race-based redistricting (Georgia, Louisiana, and North Carolina), my analysis reveals that these states have disaffected Democrats in redistricting more sharply than has the country as a whole. Using the Brookes Method to evaluate the small number of states using independent commissions to carry out Congressional redistricting, I find that electoral bias in these states is different from that found in states with legislative redistricting, and surprisingly, is often higher in commission states. This suggests that commissions are in some cases not truly independent and/or are merely fomenting a different kind of partisanship. I propose a new formulation (the Hill Ratio) of a familiar compactness standard, the area-perimeter measure. Thousands of House districts across time are analyzed under the measure and trends in compactness are noted. My analysis finds that districts in the U.S. have gotten considerably less compact since the early 20th century, while districts in Canada are still more compact than U.S. districts were even in the 1920s. Some of the states noted for their noncompact districts in the 2000s also had the least compact districts in the early 20th century. Finally, compactness is used as a factor in voter knowledge. My analysis finds that voters in non-compact districts are less likely to possess basic knowledge about their representatives and districts than voters in compact districts, while knowledge about statewide and national officeholders and party control is largely unaffected by the compactness of the congressional district. This is true when analyzed both at the aggregate and the individual level. These two measures of districting are harmonious with proportional representation ideals. The Brookes Method is an explicit comparison of majoritarian seat outputs with a proportional ideal. Compactness, in the words of Polsby & Popper, "tends to inhibit gerrymandering. By inhibiting gerrymandering, in turn, one abets proportional representation ... by empirical tendency."

Resumen
The thesis examines the shifting positions of Gwendolyn Brooks's poetry over a long career offive decades. It attempts to read Brooks's work in relation to other African American male and female writers, and also to see it in the light ofAfrican American literary theory. Chapter one presents the context from which Brooks's voice emerged, by exploring the Chicago Black Renaissance. The chapter looks particularly at Richard Wright's work ofthe 1940s including: Native Son (1940), 12 Million Black Voices (1941), Black Boy (1944), and American Hunger (1977). These works had a huge impact Olt Brooks and they further help to reflect the literary atmosphere of that decade. The lIocund chapter examines Brooks's debut volume A Street in Bronzeville (1945) through ltv,,!')' Louis Gates's 'Trope ofthe Talking Book.' The chapter includes Margaret W'lkcr's ForMy People (1942) as another female African American poet writing at the '.ydtl)' ofthe Chicago Renaissance. Chapter three examines Brooks's Annie Allen (1049), This second stage ofBrooks reveals a modernist voice and a clear will to In1••rote Into the larger American literary mainstream. The chapter also examines Ralph amiDn'. Inyisible Man (1952) and .collected essays in Shadow and Act (1964) as a point at 04Jmpnrlson. The fourth chapter examines the transitional stage in Brooks's career and .. gruwlns political consciousness in The Bean Eaters (1960), together with Lorraine U.....b'rr)'. ARaisin in the Sun (1959) since bOth works were inspired by the emergence otU. (:lvll Rights Movement. Chapter five examines the rise ofthe Black Arts MDYltlUtnt to which Brooks responded wholeheartedly. It discusses Amici Baraka's ~Collected Poetry (1961-1967), and his essays in Home (1969) and Raise Ii ~(1969) as a· framework for Brooks's concerns in In the Mecca (1968), :1__ . , which heralded her third and final poetic stage and her decision to address black audiences only. The sixth chapter examines the later works ofBrooks which were rooted In the same nationalist doctrines ofthe Black Arts Movement. It also inCludes discussion of Sonia Sanchez's Homecoming (1969) and We a BaddDDD People (1970) comparing her feminist approach to Brooks's rejection of Black feminist theories as a splitting force among African Americans.

Resumen
In the canon of twentieth century American poetry, "long poems" or "anti-epics" or epic poems represent a formidable genre. Defining epic poetry has proved difficult in our modern era, and the possibility that women might write epics is not often considered. This study includes a review of the literature that may define the epic genre and of the literature that contributes to our understanding of a tradition of women's poetry in American literature. The review of both issues--possible epic poetry and women's poetic tradition--is a necessary prerequisite for considering the argument that H.D.'s iielen in Eavpt and Gwendolyn Brooks's In the Mecca are twentieth century epics. With the focus on a female heroine, on personal and interpersonal values, and on a reconsideration of cultural lieroism, these poems are important literary contributions in addition to being "revised" epics.A revision of the epic signifies that the poet has found a way to accomplish individual expression in this familiar genre, a genre characterized by narration, cultural themes that may be didactic, and multiple voices for the poet. H.D. and Brooks have revised the genre of epic poetry in unusual ways. H.D. has taken a legendary figure, Helen of Troy, and made her the primary speaker and the seeker of truth. Instead of the classical glorification of war, Helen's quest includes a renunciation of war and a reconsideration of the ways we know ourselves and our history. Brooks has made an "unknown" black woman the center of her urban epic. Mrs. Sallie's quest, initiated by the real search for a missing daughter, becomes a quest for the meaning of family, community, and selfhood.Revising the genre was a unique process for both H.D. and Brooks, and studying Helen and Mecca together emphasizes the diverse traditions--literary and nonliterary--that may elucidate our understanding of each poem. Moreover, only refers to a "a genre revised" by H.D. and Brooks not only refers to a revision of epic poetry but to poetry as a whole. Each woman created her own blend of "traditions and individual talent" in order to produce Helen in Egypt and In the Mecca.

The Canadian basin is among the few basins worldwide for which the nature and the geometry of the substratum, and therefore the opening mode, are still unknown. Paleogeographic models based on the few data available are subject to controversy, with different mechanisms and inception ages. According to current paleogeographic models, the margins of Canadian basin either considered as extensional or transform margins. Detailed study of their structures and chronologies is a preliminary exercise to discriminate between permissible models. The most sollicited opening model assumes a change of polarity of the overall subduction south to the canadian basin during the multiphase Brookian orogeny. The Brooks orogen is located north of the alaskan peninsula and south of the canadian basin. It constitutes one of the main assembly stage of terranes in the Northern Cordillera : docking of the Arctic-Alaska-Chukotka terrane with the peri-Pacific arcs system. Its collisional stage is deemed synchronous of the opening of the Canada Basin, which is likely to provide clues about the coupling between tectonics of the north basin and intra-Alaska Cordillera deformation. This orogen has both recorded and influenced the geodynamic history of the Canadian basin. The relative chronology of the development of the two structures is essential and any reconstruction of regional geodynamics must reconcile them in terms of kinematics and boundary conditions

Laterally extensive, well-developed clinoforms have been mapped in Early Cretaceous deposits located in the northeastern 27,000 km2 of the Colville Basin, North Slope of Alaska. Using public domain 2-D seismic data, well logs, core photographs, and grain size data, depositional geometries within the Nanushuk and Torok formations were interpreted in order to constrain the transport conditions associated with progradation of the shoreline and construction of the continental margin out of detritus shed from the ancestral Brooks Range. Using STRATA, a synthetic stratigraphic modeling package, constructional clinoform geometries similar to those preserved in the North Slope clinoform volume (32,400 km3) were simulated. Sediment flux, marine and nonmarine diffusivities, and basin subsidence were systematically varied until a match was found for the foreset and topset slopes, as well as progradation rates over a 6 million year period. The ability of STRATA to match the seismically interpreted geometries allows us to constrain measures of possible water and sediment discharges consistent with the observed development of the Early Cretaceous clinoform suite. Simulations indicate that, in order to reproduce observed geometries and trends using constant input parameters, the subsidence rate must be very small, only a fraction of the most likely rate calculated from the seismic data. Constant sediment transport parameters can successfully describe the evolution of the prograding margin only in the absence of tectonic subsidence. However, further work is needed to constrain the absolute magnitude of these values and determine a unique solution for the NPR-A clinoforms.

Resumen
This thesis compares the impact of immigration on the political cultures of the town of High River, Alberta, and the city of Brooks, Alberta, from 1996 until 2012. High River and Brooks are located in southern Alberta, and are home to large meat processing facilities. Both municipalities experienced population growth from 1996 until 2012, but while the immigrant and non-permanent resident population of High River increased by 108.82% from 1996 until 2011, the immigrant and non- permanent resident population of Brooks increased by 368.38% in the same period. Two indicators of political engagement are used, including voting results from provincial elections held in 1997, 2001, 2004, and 2008. In addition, local newspaper publications are reviewed; the High River Times and The Brooks Bulletin are examined for two months preceding a provincial election, during the month of an election, and for one month following an election.

The core object of this work is the black lesbian woman: a political subject under construction in Brazil. This study aims to give visibility to the processes of intersectional discrimination and oppression daily experienced by the black lesbian woman. The research wants to contribute with the construction and affirmation of this identity, as well as to provide elements for Social Work professional interventions and for the education of new Social Workers, in the face of contemporary expressions of social inequalities. Four women contributed to the construction of this work, and the main criteria for their selection were their self-determination as black and lesbians. Furthermore, the researcher looked for recognized political activists of the black lesbians movement, between the ages of 35 and 65, in order to enable the expression of generational differences. The field work, qualitative in nature, was based on semi-structured interviews, dealing with the following aspects: a) Personal and political history; b) Questions related to race, gender and sexuality; c) Prejudice and discrimination, and d) Public policies and Social Work. Each one of those aspects was discussed in terms of identity, race and prejudice, all of them related to Social Work. The fieldwork revealed that in some situations of racism are far more perverse and relevant than discrimination and prejudice based on lesbian phobia.

Resumen

Paleoclimate reconstructions are essential to contextualize recent warming that is affecting the Arctic region faster than anywhere else on Earth. To better understand this rapidly changing landscape, I used sedimentological evidence from Lake Peters and Lake Schrader in the northeastern Brooks Range to infer changing environmental conditions over the past 16,000 years (16 ka). Across five core sites, distinct changes in the visual stratigraphy and physical sediment properties including sediment bulk density, organic-matter content, and grain-size distributions record changing environmental conditions. The oldest sediments accumulated rapidly and contain little organic matter, interpreted to represent a landscape dominated by glacial and paraglacial processes associated with the rapid upvalley retreat of glaciers. No robust evidence was found for a climate fluctuation concurrent with the Younger Dryas. A peak in organic-matter abundance between 12–10 ka is attributed to a maximum in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation and accords with other regional paleoclimate reconstructions. Following this, conditions appear to have become drier as indicated by sediments with high density and low organic content until 5 ka. Alternatively, these sediments could represent a glacial advance, but this is unlikely as regional evidence for cooler conditions is absent. From 5–2 ka, organic matter consistently increases in several cores and is attributed to increased river discharge, which carried terrestrial organic matter into the lakes, or to increased summer temperatures, which led to higher productivity, or both. After 2 ka, sediments increase in density and decrease in organic content, which suggests the growth of glaciers within the catchment. Moraine mapping and lichenometry confirm previous studies and accord with changes in lake sediments. Rhizocarpon geographicum thallus diameters on boulders located on the outermost moraine crest suggest the maximum Holocene glacial extent is associated with increased moraine frequency from elsewhere in the Brooks Range dating to 2.5–1.9 ka. New measurements from a distinct moraine crest from an additional valley show consistency within the basin and are likely associated with a regional increase in moraine frequency from 1.1–1.0 ka. Increased sedimentation rates and organic productivity in both lakes may record glacier retreat during the last century. This study provides a framework for future research and fills an important gap in paleoenvironmental records for the northeastern Brooks Range.

The kinematics and geodynamics associated with the compressional deformation in the Brooks Range and British-Barn Mountains, respectively in Alaska (USA) and North Yukon (Canada), in a back-arc setting has long been debated. The Cenozoic evolution of the Brooks Mountains is poorly understood although it is a nearly unique example of arctic orogen, which have potentially recorded major climate changes like Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, the Oligocene cooling and Quaternary glaciations. This orogen is a key to study and quantify the climate impact on the north-alaskan topographic growth. This study combined low-temperature thermochronometry (FT, U-Th/He) on granitic and sedimentary rocks, which were thermo-kinematically modeled using Pecube in order to define the orogenic evolution of this arctic region since 100 Ma. In parallel, a field-based structural study (North Yukon and Brooks Range) was combined with the analysis of subsurface data. Thermochronological data, coupled to thermometric RSCM analyses and thermal modeling first define a slow exhumation period (0.2 km/Ma) from Upper Cretaceous up to the Eocene. With the Eocene, exhumation rates drastically increased to reach 1.25-1.29km/Ma as the deformation also migrates from SW toward NE. In both alaskan and canadian parts of mountains ranges a clear Oligocene exhumational event is identified. This event is linked to out-of-sequence crustal duplexing in the internal part of the range in the Brooks Range, contemporaneous with the propagation of deformation offshore, along British and Barn Mountains

The use of solar energy via photoelectrochemical water splitting is an attractive approach for clean hydrogen production. Because of its physico-chemical properties, Earth abundance and non-toxicity, TiO2 is one of the most studied photoanode material. Yet the focus is only put on the anatase and rutile structures. However, photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 brookite remain quite unknown and need to be assessed. Here we present an easy, scalable synthesis approach for photoanodes allowing a good control of crystallinity, shape and particles size and their organization in the photoanode. The three different pure phases of TiO2 nanoparticles were synthetized, assembled into a photoanode with a dip-coating technique and appropriately sintered to obtain good film cohesion. The brookite phase is first studied: parameters such as thickness and porosity of the electrode, crystallinity and size of the crystallites are carefully investigated to understand their influence on the photoanode performances. Interestingly, its poor photocurrent cannot be attributed to electron-hole recombination at grains interfaces rather than charge carrier separation and transfer properties in the bulk of the particles. Furthermore, the influence of the TiO2 phase is evaluated. Because of small particles size and isotropic morphology, poor electron and hole transfer were found too deleterious to establish an indicative performance hierarchy between anatase, brookite and rutile pure phases. Eventually, phase mixture of anatase – rutile was investigated and showed a significant performance increase attributed to the improvement of charge carrier separation and mobility

Resumen
This paper aims to investigate the terms and conditions of a lesbian gaze and a lesbian spectatorship from a feminist and queer theoretical point of view. The empirical material consists of three paintings by the American artist Romaine Brooks (1874-1970).  Brooks was based in Paris in the early 20th century where she was surrounded by a group of intellectual and usually cross-dressing lesbians. The women within this context are the ones depicted in Brooks’ paintings and this makes her one of the first artists in modernity to openly portray lesbian and cross-dressing women. Her paintings lead into new conditions for the traditional understanding of spectatorship as well as female positions, since there is no male involvement or presence within the interactive space surrounding these paintings. The survey tries to further investigate and break down already existing theories concerning spectatorship with the main focus on Laura Mulvey’s the male gaze, termed in the essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” (1975). The queer theoretical approach in this paper is based on Judith Butler’s performativity, which then is attached to gaze theories in order to investigate the active and passive positions found in Brooks’ paintings. The paper does also include an analysis of the male gaze in relation to modernism, avant-garde, canon and subsequently the reason behind Brooks’ absence in modernist canon.

Resumen
A quantitative study of the behavior of brown bears (Ursus arctos) was undertaken in areas of differing human activity at Brooks River in Katmai National Park and Preserve, 1988-1990. The research was conducted to determine whether the activity of any particular classes of bears using the river were differentially affected by human activity, activity of conspecifics, or availability of salmon. Approximately 1643 hours of systematic observation were recorded, 781 between June 26 and July 29 and 862 hours between August 26 and October 12 of all three years. Comparisons of fish capture rates by bears and distributions of bear use among observation zones were made by grouping individually identified bears according to both their age-sex class and tolerance of people (habituation). Differences in distributions of use among age-sex classes were apparent only during June-July; during that time subadults and females with young favored use of the river below Brooks Falls to a greater degree than other bears. Fish capture rates recorded during July 1990 showed a more than three-fold increase over those observed 1988-1989. The apparent increase in fish availability to bears that year was accompanied by the only observed differences in fish capture rates among age-sex classes. During July 1990 salmon availability in the observation zones near Brooks Camp increased significantly over the previous two years; habituated bears (tolerant of people at <50 >m) showed nearly three times as much use of those zones as in 1988-1989. In contrast, nonhabituated bears (61.5%-76.3% of all adult bears observed among observation years and seasons) showed minimal use of these areas despite the high availability of salmon. During the fall of each year fish capture rates appeared highest in the observation zones near Brooks Camp. Habituated bears used these zones significantly more than did nonhabituated bears, and overall rates of river use were higher for habituated than nonhabituated bears. Depending on their habituation class, females with young showed distinctly different use patterns through the fall season and across observation zones. All nonhabituated females with young (50.0% of females with young of known habituation class) favored use of the observation zone nearest Brooks Camp, and their activity was highest late in the season when human activity was minimal. The implications of patterns of use by age-sex class and degree of habituation to people are discussed.
